Tesla, Inc. designs, develops, manufactures, leases, and sells electric vehicles, and energy generation and storage systems in the United States, China, and internationally. The company operates in two segments, Automotive, and Energy Generation and Storage. The Automotive segment offers electric vehicles, as well as sells automotive regulatory credits; and non-warranty after-sales vehicle, used vehicles, body shop and parts, supercharging, retail merchandise, and vehicle insurance services. This segment also provides sedans and sport utility vehicles through direct and used vehicle sales, a network of Tesla Superchargers, and in-app upgrades; purchase financing and leasing services; services for electric vehicles through its company-owned service locations and Tesla mobile service technicians; and vehicle limited warranties and extended service plans. The Energy Generation and Storage segment engages in the design, manufacture, installation, sale, and leasing of solar energy generation and energy storage products, and related services to residential, commercial, and industrial customers and utilities through its website, stores, and galleries, as well as through a network of channel partners; and provision of service and repairs to its energy product customers, including under warranty, as well as various financing options to its solar customers. The company was formerly known as Tesla Motors, Inc. and changed its name to Tesla, Inc. in February 2017. Tesla, Inc. was incorporated in 2003 and is headquartered in Austin, Texas.

After weeks of Iran dominating markets, investors are beginning to shift their attention elsewhere, especially with earnings season in full swing and the AI trade back in fashion.
However, that doesn't mean the war's impact on the global economy is gone. Even as the ceasefire holds, President Trump reportedly told his staff to prepare for a longer-term blockade of Iran, a sign that oil prices are likely to remain elevated and could move higher.

A barrel of Brent Crude jumped 5% on Wednesday to $110 in response to the report, and oil executives are beginning to warn of an extended supply shock, which could last into 2027. Meanwhile, countries in Africa and Asia that depend on oil from the Strait of Hormuz are beginning to ration energy, unsure when adequate supplies will return.
There's a lot of uncertainty around the situation in energy, but one stock that looks ideally positioned is Bloom Energy (NYSE: BE), a maker of hydrogen fuel cells.
Bloom's breakthrough
Bloom is a producer of hydrogen-powered solid oxide fuel cells, and the stock has soared in the last few years as the alternative energy company has benefited from the AI and data center boom, as its fuel cells are easy to deploy for AI data centers, which require large amounts of power.
Bloom soared again following its first-quarter earnings report as it delivered 130% year-over-year revenue growth to $751.1 million, smashing expectations at $540 million, and it reported a strong adjusted operating profit of $129.7 million, which was up 10x from the year before. Adjusted earnings per share jumped from $0.03 to $0.44, easily beating the consensus at $0.13.
Earlier this month, Bloom announced an expansion with Oracle, one of the AI hyperscalers, to deploy up to 2.8 gigawatts of power after already putting 1.2 GW into effect across Oracle projects. That showcases Bloom's effectiveness in delivering supplemental power and its embrace by the AI industry.
Why high oil prices could be a win for Bloom
The longer oil prices stay elevated, the more consumers and businesses are going to search for alternatives to oil and, in some circumstances, natural gas. Tesla noted increased interest in its EVs since the war in Iran began, and EV sales have jumped around much of the world.
Bloom figures to be a beneficiary as well, as data center operators, manufacturers, and others that consume large amounts of power look for alternatives.
The company noted on the recentearnings callthat competing energy options are increasing their cost to the customer, putting Bloom in a favorable position.
Of course, the outcome of the war and the situation in the Strait of Hormuz is unknown, and a resolution would undermine the case for alternative energy companies. Still, Bloom looks like a company that's well-positioned to grow with or without high oil prices.
If the blockade continues, that will only be an added bonus for the stock.

This Hydrogen Stock Is Soaring on Earnings. The Iran Blockade Could Give It a Lasting Tailwind

Penske Automotive Group, Inc. PAG reported first-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings of $3.05 per share, which declined 15.0% year over year but topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.91 by 4.8%. Total revenues of $7.86 billion dipped 1.1% from the year-ago quarter and missed the consensus mark of $7.95 billion by 1.1%.
Despite softer revenues versus expectations, Penske’s Retail Automotive service and parts revenues rose 4.6% to $863.9 million, helping cushion a tougher comparison and challenging market conditions.

PAG Faces Weather and Mix Pressures in Retail Auto
In Retail Automotive, total new units delivered fell 9.9% year over year to 50,036, while used units slipped 0.6% to 60,126. Total retail units declined 5% to 110,162, reflecting a tougher demand backdrop in key markets.
Management cited U.S. weather-related disruptions early in the quarter, prior-year tariff-related pull-forward of retail sales, and softer U.S. electric-vehicle demand tied to regulatory easing and the expiration of tax credits as primary drags on new-vehicle volume.
Penske’s Pricing Holds Up as Used Revenues Rise
Even with lower new-vehicle volumes, the company posted higher used-vehicle revenues, which increased 7.3% year over year to $2.43 billion. New-vehicle revenues decreased 5.2% to $3.08 billion, while finance and insurance revenues were modestly lower at $202.3 million.
On profitability per unit, retail automotive gross profit per new vehicle (excluding agency) was $4,783, down 4.6% from the year-ago level, and used-vehicle gross profit per unit was $2,076, down 2.0%. Notably, agency units rose 21.8% to 13,011, and agency gross profit per unit improved 7.1% to $2,805, adding a steadier profit stream alongside traditional retail sales.
PAG’s Truck Segment Sees Lower Deliveries, Better Mix
Retail Commercial Truck results were pressured by lower deliveries, with total new and used units down 24% year over year to 3,583. Segment revenues decreased 15.7% to $694.6 million, and earnings before taxes fell to $36.4 million from $45.1 million a year ago.
Within the segment, service and parts provided relative stability. Service and parts revenues increased 4.6% to $232.2 million, and the segment’s total gross margin improved 140 basis points to 18.5%, even as gross profit per unit for new and used vehicles declined. Management also pointed to improving freight trends, noting industry reports showed a 91% increase in Class 8 market orders for the three months ended March 31, 2026, compared with the prior-year period.
PAG Benefits From Affiliate Earnings and Dealership Sale Gains
Below the operating line, equity in earnings of affiliates increased 22.5% year over year to $40.8 million. PAG’s equity income from its Penske Transportation Solutions investment was $41.1 million in the quarter.
The company also recorded a gain on the sale of a dealership of $60.4 million versus $52.3 million a year ago, supporting reported profitability. Income before income taxes was $323.7 million, down 7.6% year over year, while adjusted income before taxes was $276.3 million, reflecting the impact of excluded items in management’s operating view.
PAG Prioritizes M&A and Shareholder Returns
PAG continued active capital deployment during the quarter, completing acquisitions of Lexus of Orlando and Lexus of Winter Park, which are expected to add $450 million in estimated annualized revenues. Cash paid for acquisitions totaled $669.7 million, including $115 million for property and floor plans.
Shareholder returns remained in focus. The company paid $92.6 million in dividends and repurchased 170,393 shares for $26.4 million. Liquidity was approximately $1.3 billion, including $83.7 million in cash and $1.2 billion of availability under credit agreements and revolving mortgage facilities. Balance sheet leverage increased, with long-term debt rising to $2.21 billion as of March 31, 2026.
Key Releases From the Auto Space
Tesla TSLA released first-quarter 2026 results on April 22. The company delivered earnings of 41 cents per share, which increased 52% year over year and came ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 36 cents by 13.04%. Tesla’s revenues rose 15.8% from the year-ago quarter to $22.39 billion and topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $21.92 billion by 2.12%, supported by higher vehicle deliveries and stronger Services and Other activity. Tesla expects its capital spending to exceed $25 billion this year, higher than the prior forecast of $20 billion.
Genuine Parts Company GPC reported first-quarter 2026 results on April 21. The company delivered adjusted earnings of $1.77 per share, which missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.81 but improved 1.1% from the year-ago quarter. Genuine Parts posted revenues of $6.27 billion, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $6.17 billion by 1.5% and increased 6.8% year over year. The performance was driven by solid sales growth across business segments and a 20-basis-point improvement in gross margin to 37.3%. Genuine Parts expects total sales growth of 3%-5.5% and comparable sales growth of 2%-4.5% this year.

PAG Q1 Earnings Beat Estimates on Strong Service and Parts

Lithia Motors LAD posted first-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings of $7.34 per share, down 4% from $7.66 a year ago. However, the bottom line beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $7.06 by 4%.
Quarterly revenues rose 1% year over year to $9.27 billion but came in below the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $9.36 billion by 0.9%. Operationally, Driveway Finance Corporation generated record originations of $840 million with an 18% penetration rate and an average FICO score of 750.

LAD’s Revenue Mix Tilts Toward Used and Service
The quarter’s top-line mix showed clear relative strength in used vehicles and aftersales. Used vehicle revenues increased 7.3% year over year to $3,489.4 million, while aftersales revenues rose 6.1% to $1,042.9 million.
Same-store trends were consistent with that mix shift. Same-store used vehicle revenues increased 4.6% to $3,302.0 million, and same-store aftersales revenues advanced 3.8% to $992.1 million, reflecting steady service demand from Lithia’s growing installed base.
Those gains helped offset softer new-vehicle demand. New vehicle revenues declined 4.4% to $4,379.4 million, and finance and insurance revenues slipped 1.3% to $359.7 million, leaving total revenues modestly higher. Same-store new vehicle revenues fell 7.1% year over year, while same-store revenues from finance and insurance fell 3.8%.
Lithia’s Unit Trends Highlight Used Outperformance
Volume data reinforced the quarter’s revenue pattern. New vehicle unit sales decreased 4.7% year over year to 94,787 units, while used retail unit sales increased 2.6% to 110,151 units.
Pricing moved in opposite directions. Average selling price for new vehicles (excluding agency) edged down 0.7% to $46,878, whereas the used retail average selling price climbed 4.7% to $28,464. That combination of higher used pricing and used volumes supported the period’s used revenue growth.
LAD’s Expense Growth Pressures Operating Leverage
Profitability across major lines was mixed, with aftersales continuing to stand out. Aftersales gross margin improved 150 basis points year over year to 58.9%, while total gross profit increased 0.8% to $1,421.7 million.
By contrast, vehicle margins narrowed. New-vehicle gross margin fell 50 basis points to 5.9%, and used-vehicle gross margin decreased 40 basis points to 5.4%. Average gross profit per new vehicle declined 7.2% to $2,739, and used retail gross profit per unit slipped 4.6% to $1,688, signaling a tougher margin backdrop despite improved used pricing.
On the cost side, selling, general and administrative expenses increased 8.9% year over year to $1,037.4 million, outpacing gross profit growth and limiting operating leverage. Depreciation and amortization rose 9.2% to $69.8 million.
As a result, income from operations fell 17.4% to $335.8 million. Floor plan interest expense was $55.9 million, and other interest expense totaled $70.3 million, underscoring the sensitivity of dealership models to interest rates and inventory financing costs.
Lithia’s Noncore Items Drive GAAP-Adjusted Gap
Below operating income, other expense swung to $67.6 million in the quarter. The company’s reconciliation highlighted an investment loss of $73.3 million and contract buyouts of $20.3 million among items excluded from adjusted results.
GAAP diluted earnings per share were $4.28, and net income declined 51.7% to $102.0 million. The stores acquired during the quarter are expected to contribute $425 million in annualized revenues, keeping growth initiatives active even as reported profitability resets lower year over year.
LAD’s Balance Sheet Expands With Inventory Financing
As of March 31, 2026, Lithia’s cash, restricted cash and cash equivalents totaled $421.3 million, up from $341.8 million at year-end 2025. Inventories were $6,193.2 million, and floor plan notes payable climbed to $6,284.5 million, highlighting the financing intensity that comes with managing vehicle stock.
Within longer-dated obligations, long-term debt (net of current maturities) was $6,448.8 million, while total assets stood at $25,749.7 million. On cash flow, net cash used in operating activities was $108.4 million, and cash paid for acquisitions (net of cash acquired) was $145.3 million, alongside $97.1 million of capital expenditures.
Lithia’s Capital Returns Stay Active Amid Platform Build
The board approved a quarterly dividend of 57 cents per share, expected to be paid on May 22, 2026, to shareholders of record on May 8, 2026.
During the first quarter, the company repurchased approximately 942,000 shares at a weighted average price of $274.62, with $362.9 million remaining under the current authorization. The investor presentation also pointed to managed finance receivables of $5 billion in the quarter and net debt to adjusted EBITDA of 3.07x, metrics that help frame how the company is balancing growth, financing and shareholder returns.

Autoliv, Inc. ALV reported first-quarter 2026 results on April 17. It posted adjusted earnings of $2.05 per share, which declined 4.7% year over year but came ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.77 by 15.8%. Net sales were $2.75 billion, up 6.8% from the year-ago quarter and above the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.63 billion by 4.52%.
Autoliv ended the quarter with cash and cash equivalents of $342 million, compared with $322 million a year earlier. Long-term debt was $1.7 billion, compared with $1.56 billion a year ago. Shareholder returns continued through dividends. Autoliv paid a cash dividend of 87 cents per share in the quarter, with dividends paid totaling $65 million.
Genuine Parts Company GPC reported its first-quarter 2026 results on April 21. It posted adjusted earnings of $1.77 per share, which missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.81 by 1.94%. The bottom line improved 1.1% from the year-ago quarter’s adjusted earnings of $1.75 per share. The company posted revenues of $6.27 billion, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $6.17 billion by 1.5% and increased 6.8% year over year. The performance was driven by solid sales growth across business segments and a 20-basis-point improvement in gross margin to 37.3%.
GPC’s total liquidity was $1.3 billion as of March 31, 2026, including $500 million in cash and $838 million of revolver capacity. During the quarter, GPC invested $98 million in capex and $14 million in acquisitions, while returning $142 million to shareholders via dividends. For 2026, the company targets $450-$500 million in capex and $300-$350 million in M&A, with approximately 7.5 million shares remaining under its repurchase authorization.
Tesla, Inc. TSLA reported first-quarter 2026 results on April 22. It posted adjusted earnings of 41 cents per share, which increased 52% year over year and came ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 36 cents by 13.04%. Quarterly revenues rose 15.8% from the year-ago quarter to $22.39 billion and topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $21.92 billion by 2.12%, supported by higher vehicle deliveries and stronger Services and Other activity.
Tesla generated $3.94 billion of net cash from operating activities in the quarter. Capital expenditures were $2.49 billion, up from $1.49 billion in the same period last year, resulting in free cash flow of $1.44 billion. Liquidity remained a key support for the company’s expanded investment agenda. Cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments ended the quarter at $44.74 billion, while debt and finance leases net of the current portion were $7.78 billion.

This year is shaping up as one of the most consequential in history for initial public offerings (IPOs). Artificial intelligence (AI) large language model developers OpenAI and Anthropic, which both sport estimated valuations in the neighborhood of $1 trillion, are contemplating going public before the year ends. Meanwhile, the largest expected IPO in Wall Street history, SpaceX, is right around the corner.
When SpaceX goes public, presumably in the second half of June, it'll likely command a market cap of $1.75 trillion to $2 trillion. This would make this space infrastructure and AI titan the eighth-largest publicly traded company on U.S. stock exchanges, slotting it ahead of Elon Musk's other trillion-dollar business, electric-vehicle maker Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA).

The hype surrounding SpaceX is palpable – so much so that up to 30% of the company's shares may be set aside for retail investors. Most IPOs portion 5% to 10% of shares for everyday investors.
It's easy to be excited when several of SpaceX's puzzle pieces are growing at a breakneck pace. Space infrastructure and artificial intelligence are two of the largest addressable opportunities over the coming decade. When Musk's company files its registration statement (S-1), we'll get a true feel for just how fast SpaceX is growing.
Retail investors have a terrible habit of being overzealous with Wall Street's largest IPOs
But while SpaceX is drumming up plenty of interest for its historic debut, it's likely also luring potentially millions of retail investors into a costly mistake.
The $75 billion (or more) that SpaceX aims to raise from its IPO would be the most in history by a long shot. The current largest IPO recordholder is Saudi Aramco, which raised $29.4 billion from its overseas debut in December 2019.
In terms of capital raises, U.S. investors have witnessed a handful of big-time debuts since 1999, including Facebook (now Meta Platforms), Alibaba Group, Visa, General Motors, and United Parcel Service. With the exception of China's largest e-commerce and cloud infrastructure services platform, Alibaba, these other businesses are household names, and they generated a mountain of retail investor buzz before their respective IPOs.
Something else most of these companies have in common is that they sputtered out of the gate. Although Visa rallied 23% in the six months following its public debut, Meta, Alibaba, General Motors, UPS, and even Saudi Aramco, tumbled by 38%, 9%, 8%, 11%, and 15%, respectively, in the six months following their IPOs.
History has shown that investors have a terrible habit of being overzealous with brand-name IPOs, and there's a high probability this will be the case with SpaceX.

Putting aside the well-known long-term growth prospects for the space economy and AI, SpaceX is trading at a triple-digit (and likely unsustainable) price-to-sales ratio, based on a January Reuters report that the company generated $15 billion to $16 billion in sales last year.
History also tells us that every game-changing technology and trend endures an early stage bubble-bursting event. If the space economy and AI follow the same pattern other next-big-thing trends have for more than three decades, SpaceX's valuation premium would be hard to justify.

SpaceX IPO: Potentially Millions of Retail Investors Will Make This Costly Mistake -- Don't Be One of Them

Some electric vehicle (EV) makers have faced obstacles over the past year. In the U.S., regulatory changes have made an impact. But even beyond that, it is an increasingly crowded industry. Further, many consumers remain hesitant to get on the EV bandwagon due to concerns about charging-station availability, among other stumbling blocks. Despite all that, technological advances could drive greater EV adoption over the medium term and beyond. Two companies worth considering to capitalize on this growth are BYD (OTC: BYDDY) and Rivian (NASDAQ: RIVN). Here is more on these two notable EV players.

1. BYD
Last year, BYD became the top-selling EV company, taking the crown from Tesla. However, the China-based company lost that title in the first quarter. What's more, BYD is facing significant challenges. Stiff competition in its home market is leading to declining sales volume.
Here's the good news for investors: BYD is aware of its issues and has a plan to turn things around. Part of the company's goal is to export the strategy that made it so successful in China to other places. BYD became one of the top EV companies in China -- the largest market in the world -- thanks to its vertically integrated approach, differentiated battery technology (it was originally a battery maker), and focus on offering affordable, mass market vehicles that saw significant adoption.
BYD has been aggressively expanding into other countries. The company plans to sell 50% of its cars outside of China by 2030. That would be a massive change for a company that, in 2024, sold about 90% of its cars in Mainland China. Provided BYD can achieve the goal of 50% of sales abroad and attract a reasonable share of various international markets, deliveries could jump along with the company's revenue and profits.
The U.S. may not be one of those countries BYD targets, as the company's imports would be subject to significant tariffs. The company is performing well in other countries, though, including Germany, where it is one of the fastest-growing brands. The challenges BYD faces in the U.S. market highlight just one of the risks its international expansion strategy could encounter, even in countries with friendlier import laws. However, if BYD can reach its goals by 2030, the stock could deliver excellent returns through then.
2. Rivian
Rivian is entering an important period in its history. The company said it would launch the R2, a mass-market model that's cheaper than its previous models, during the second quarter. This could help make the company's brands far more popular. Rivian is also ramping up its efforts to get to level 4 autonomy. This would allow the company to get in on the potentially lucrative market for autonomous vehicles, notably through a deal it signed with the ride-hailing giant, Uber.
Rivian's launch of the R2 will help along those lines, since more cars on the road means more data to train its self-driving software. By 2030, Rivian could be a much transformed company if it can capture a decent share of the large midsize SUV EV market and make significant headway in launching robotaxis. Rivian could also license its self-driving software to other companies, an initiative that would generate high-margin revenue.
Now, it's important to note that Rivian faces significant risks, particularly as it prepares to take on Tesla in the midsize SUV market. The company's deliveries also declined last year as it dealt with expiring EV tax credits toward the end of 2025 in the U.S. The company projected that deliveries would improve this year, so perhaps a rebound is already underway. Rivian could deliver outstanding returns over the next five years if it can maintain its momentum.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, OpenAI is missing its internal targets, and some of its management and board members are raising questions over data center spending. The news came at a bad time for OpenAI, as Tesla CEO Elon Musk's lawsuit against OpenAI CEO Sam Altman comes to trial. A win for Musk could see a shake-up at OpenAI, resulting in a change in strategic direction.

What it means to Oracle investors
None of this is great news for Oracle, as any doubt over its partner's growth prospects and leadership casts doubt on Oracle's own growth plans. According to data from S&P Market Intelligence, the company's heavy capital spending will push its net debt to $176 billion in 2029, before it turns free cash flow positive again as OpenAI revenue grows strongly.
The risk in that scenario has led to an increase in the price of credit default swaps (insurance against default) on Oracle's debt.
As such, the recent rally in the stock price hasn't been backed up significantly by the bond markets. All told, there are probably better ways to play the AI growth story than Oracle.
