This segment also provides sedans and sport utility vehicles through direct and used vehicle sales, a network of Tesla Superchargers, and in-app upgrades; purchase financing and leasing services; services for electric vehicles through its company-owned service locations and Tesla mobile service technicians; and vehicle limited warranties and extended service plans. The Energy Generation and Storage segment engages in the design, manufacture, installation, sale, and leasing of solar energy generation and energy storage products, and related services to residential, commercial, and industrial customers and utilities through its website, stores, and galleries, as well as through a network of channel partners; and provision of service and repairs to its energy product customers, including under warranty, as well as various financing options to its solar customers. Treasury Secretary Bessent said Monday that the pool of candidates for the next Fed Chair has been narrowed to Christopher Waller, Kevin Warsh, Kevin Hassett, Michelle Bowman, and Rick Rieder. President Trump is expected to announce a decision on a new Fed Chair by year-end to replace current Fed Chair Powell, whose term as the Fed Chairman ends on May 15, 2026. Mr. Powell's separate term as a Fed Governor runs until January 2028, though he faces pressure from Mr. Trump to step down as a Fed Governor as well, so Mr. Trump can appoint a more dovish Fed governor.
This is a busy week, with the FOMC meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday, when it is expected to cut its federal funds rate target by -25 bp. Also, five of the Magnificent Seven companies report earnings this week, with Alphabet, Meta, and Microsoft reporting on Wednesday, and Apple and Amazon.com reporting on Thursday.
There was some carry-over support from last Friday's Sep US CPI report of +3.0% y/y for both the nominal and core figures, which was slightly weaker than expectations of +3.1% y/y for both figures.
Trade relations with Canada were a negative factor for stocks on Monday after President Trump said on Saturday that he would impose a new 10% tariff on US imports from Canada as punishment for last week's anti-tariff advertisement released by the provincial government of Ontario. Mr. Trump initially said that he was only halting US trade negotiations with Canada due to the ad, but he escalated the punishment over the weekend by imposing a new 10% tariff, even though Ontario had agreed to pause the ad campaign.
Ontario's ad featured former US President Reagan speaking out in a 1987 address in favor of free trade and against tariffs, calling tariffs an outdated idea that stifles innovation, drives up prices, and hurts US workers. Mr. Trump claimed the ad was deceptive and said it was designed to influence the US Supreme Court ahead of oral arguments on November 5 on the legality of Mr. Trump's reciprocal tariffs. Lower courts have already deemed Mr. Trump's reciprocal tariffs illegal, ruling the tariffs are based on a specious claim of emergency authority. If the US Supreme Court upholds those rulings, the US government will have to refund the tariffs already collected, and Mr. Trump's power to impose tariffs will be limited to well-founded sections of US trade law.
The US government shutdown continues into its fifth week, weighing on market sentiment and the US economy. The government shutdown is delaying the release of government reports, including all the recent weekly unemployment claims reports, the September unemployment and payroll report, Aug trade balance, Sep retail sales, Sep PPI, Sep housing starts, Sep industrial production, Sep leading indicators, and others. Bloomberg Economics estimates that 640,000 federal workers will be furloughed during the shutdown, which would expand jobless claims and push the unemployment rate up to 4.7%.
The markets are focused on earnings results as the Q3 earnings season continues. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, 84% of the S&P 500 companies that have reported so far have beaten forecasts, on course for the best quarter since 2021. However, Q3 profits are expected to have risen by +7.2% y/y, the smallest increase in two years. Also, Q3 sales growth is projected to slow to +5.9% y/y from +6.4% in Q2.
Overseas stock markets on Monday closed higher. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed up +0.64%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +1.18%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 closed up +2.46%.
Interest Rates
December 10-year T-notes (ZNZ5) on Monday rose slightly by +0.5 tick. The 10-year T-note yield fell -1.2 bp to 3.989%. T-note prices initially fell on Monday due to the US-Chinese trade agreement, which reduced safe-haven demand for Treasury securities and was positive for the US and Chinese economies. T-note prices were also pressured by the rally in US stocks.
However, T-note prices recovered later in the day as the 10-year inflation expectations rate fell by -1.1 bp to 2.288%. T-notes have support from the ongoing US government shutdown, which could lead to additional job losses, reduced consumer spending, and a weakened US economy, potentially allowing the Fed to continue cutting interest rates.
The markets are discounting a 98% chance of a -25 bp rate cut at this week's FOMC meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday (Oct 28-29).
European government bond yields closed lower. The 10-year German bund yield fell -1.0 bp to 2.616%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell 3.0 bp at 4.402%.
Swaps are discounting a 1% chance for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on October 30.
US Stock Movers
The Magnificent Seven stocks all closed higher on Monday, led by a +4.3% gain in Tesla (TSLA), a +3.6% gain in Alphabet (GOOG), and gains of more than +2% in Nvidia (NVDA) and Apple (AAPL).
Chip stocks traded higher across the board Monday, led by a +11% gain in Qualcomm (QCOM) on news of a new AI chip and computer line to compete with Nvidia. Marvell Technology (MRVL) rose more than +5%, and Arm Holdings (ARM) rose more than +4%. ON Semiconductors (ON), Lam Research (LRCX), and Intel (INTC) all rose by more than +3%.
Crypto stocks traded higher, with support from Monday's gains of more than +3% in Bitcoin (^BTCUSD) and +5% in Ethereum (^ETHUSD). Riot Platforms (RIOT) rallied more than +7%, Strategy (MSTR) rallied +2.3%, and Coinbase (COIN) rallied +2.0%.
Avidity Biosciences (RNA) rallied +42% after news that Swiss-based Novartis plans to buy the company in a deal worth $12 billion. Novartis ADR shares (NVS) fell -0.9%.
Ohio-based Huntington Bancshares (HBAN) agreed to buy Cadence Bank (CADE) for $7.4 billion in an all-stock deal to expand into the Southeast and South. Huntington fell -1.8%, while Cadence rallied +4.4%.
American Water Works (AWK) fell -2.5%, and Essential Utilities (WTRG) fell -1.4%, after news that the two companies finalized AWK's purchase of Essential Utilities for $12 billion in an all-stock deal.
Keurig Dr Pepper (KDP) rallied more than +7% after raising its full-year net sales guidance.
Lululemon Athletica (LULU) rallied about +2% on news of an agreement with the National Football League and sports merchandiser Fanatics Inc to develop a line of fan apparel.
Robinhood Markets (HOOD) rose more than +4% after CICC gave the brokerage a new rating of outperform.

Cantor Fitzgerald Maintains Tesla (TSLA) Overweight Recommendation

(RTTNews) - Tesla (TSLA) Board Chair Robyn Denholm cautioned shareholders that CEO Elon Musk could step away from the company if his proposed $1 trillion performance-based compensation plan is voted down at Tesla's November 6 annual meeting.
In a letter to investors, Denholm emphasized that Musk's leadership is "critical" to Tesla's future and warned that without sufficient incentives, the company risks losing his "time, talent, and vision." The package includes 12 tranches of stock options tied to milestones such as an $8.5 trillion market capitalization and advancements in autonomous driving and robotics.
Denholm defended the plan as essential to align Musk's interests with shareholders and to secure his long-term commitment, urging investors to also re-elect three veteran directors who have worked closely with him.
The appeal follows mounting opposition from influential proxy advisers Glass Lewis and Institutional Shareholder Services, both recommending shareholders vote against the deal, citing concerns about board independence and excessive compensation.
Tesla's board has faced years of scrutiny over its close ties to Musk. A Delaware court previously voided his 2018 pay package, ruling it had been improperly negotiated. The latest proposal, the largest in corporate history, is intended to retain Musk as Tesla pursues growth in AI and autonomous technology.

Let's take a close look at electric vehicle (EV) maker's Q3 results and prospects to see if now is a good time to buy the stock or if investors should stay away.
An increase in auto sales
After two straight quarters of big declines in its core auto business, Tesla's auto revenue grew in Q3. This was likely because of U.S. customers rushing to buy EVs before the $7,500 federal EV tax credit expired at the end of September.
After a 13% drop in deliveries in both the first and second quarters, Tesla's deliveries rose by 7% in Q3. Model 3 and Model Y deliveries increased by 9%, while other models plunged by 30%.
Tesla's auto revenue rose by 6% to $21.2 billion in the quarter. However, within its auto revenue, its regulatory credits, which are pure gross margin, dropped by 44% to $417 million. This led to its profitability metrics falling despite the increase in auto sales.
Overall, Tesla's revenue climbed 12% to $28.1 billion. Its energy generation and storage revenue soared 44% to $3.4 billion, while its service revenue jumped 25% to nearly $3.5 billion. Adjusted earnings per share (EPS) plunged 31% to $0.50, missing the analyst consensus of $0.54, as compiled by LSEG. Its adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA), meanwhile, fell by 9% to $4.2 billion.
Tesla did, however, see a nice increase in free cash flow, as it reduced its capital expenditures (capex) in the quarter. Its operating cash flow was flattish at $6.2 billion, while its free cash flow climbed by 46% to $4 billion.
Near-term uncertainty, but big promise for the future
While Tesla noted it will be facing near-term uncertainty, it once again made big promises for the future. Musk was upbeat about the company soon achieving unsupervised self-driving (FSD) capabilities. He said that with just a software update, he could turn millions of cars into full self-driving cars. However, it is notable that the company subtly changed the language in its shareholder letter, saying that "Every Tesla vehicle delivered today is designed for autonomy." It has also recently changed the definition of FSD.
Given his confidence, Musk said that he would ramp up vehicle production, and that Tesla could be able to produce 3 million vehicles a year within the next two years. This will be to support its Cybercab ambitions, as well as the increase in demand it expects it would see from offering unsupervised FSD technology with its cars, which would allow people to do things like text and watch videos instead of having to focus on the road.
Musk was also upbeat about its Optimus robot, saying Tesla plans to unveil Optimus V3 early next year and begin production toward the end of 2026. He stated that the company is planning to produce a million Optimus robots annually in the future, even though manufacturing presents some difficulties.
Should investors buy or avoid the stock?
Tesla's stock trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) of over 188 based on 2026 analyst estimates, while its profitable auto peers -- like Ford Motor Company, General Motors, and Stellantis -- typically trade at multiples of 10 or less. Even luxury automaker Ferrari trades at just 33 times 2026 EPS estimates.
At this point, most of Tesla's stock value comes down to whether Musk can deliver on FSD and his Optimus robots. Without FSD, its core auto business is likely to struggle in the near term with the end of federal tax credits and high tariffs, along with rising competition in the EV space. Notably, Musk has expressed his confidence in FSD for the past six years with little progress, and its supervised robotaxi pilot in Austin has run into issues, so you can decide for yourself whether to share his enthusiasm.
For me, Tesla is a stock to avoid at the moment.

With Near-Term Uncertainty Ahead, Should Investors Avoid Tesla Stock or Bet on Its Future?

NIO Inc. NIO has exceeded 90 million cumulative battery swap services, achieving this milestone just 100 days after reaching 80 million, per CnEVPost. The 90 millionth swap was completed on Oct. 26, 2025, per the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer's announcement on Weibo. NIO now performs more than 100,000 battery swaps daily, with the 100 millionth service expected soon.
The company reported that total electricity dispensed through its battery swap network has reached 4.75 billion kWh, enough to power more than 2.37 million households for a year.
Per CnEVPost, NIO established its first battery swap station in Shenzhen on May 20, 2018, and has since rapidly expanded its network. It took 29 months to complete its first million swaps. It completed 10 million swaps on July 4, 2022, 50 million on Aug. 5, 2024, 60 million on Dec. 13, 2024, 70 million on April 1, 2025, and 80 million on July 19, 2025. The pace of NIO’s battery swap services is rapidly increasing with an expanding owner base, and the 100 millionth swap is anticipated around January 2026.
In the third quarter of 2025, NIO delivered 87,071 vehicles, up 40.8% year over year, marking a record quarterly high. Cumulative vehicle deliveries reached 872,785 as of Sept. 30, 2025. Charging Infrastructure of NIO’s Peers
Tesla, Inc. TSLA operates the world’s largest and fastest-charging network, featuring more than 70,000 Superchargers globally. In September, the company introduced its first V4 Supercharger cabinets, offering triple the power density and twice the number of stalls per cabinet compared to V3 models. This upgrade delivers higher throughput, greater efficiency, lower costs and faster deployment. The V4 Superchargers support charging speeds of up to 500 kW for passenger vehicles and 1,200 kW for the Tesla Semi, making them the fastest truck chargers in the United States. By the end of the third quarter of 2025, Tesla’s Supercharger network included 7,753 stations worldwide.
Per an InsideEVs Global report published on MSN, Rivian Automotive, Inc. RIVN operates more than 120 DC fast charging stations across the United States, most of which are accessible to all EVs. Rivian has around 122 total sites nationwide, 93 open to the public and 29 reserved exclusively for R1S and R1T owners. This marks significant growth from 67 operational locations in February of the previous year.
NIO’s Price Performance, Valuation and Estimates
NIO has outperformed the Zacks Automotive-Foreign industry, Tesla and Lucid year to date. Its shares have surged 58.3% compared with the industry’s growth of 6%. Shares of Tesla have risen 7.4%, while Lucid has punged 38.8% year to date.

From a valuation perspective, NIO appears slightly overvalued compared to the industry. Going by its price/sales ratio, the company is trading at a forward sales multiple of 0.77, higher than the industry’s 0.49. Tesla is trading at a forward sales multiple of 13.62, while Lucid is trading at 2.18.

NIO Hits 90 Million Battery Swaps: What Powers This Momentum?

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) is up +0.87%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) (DIA) is up +0.52%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) is up +1.32%. December E-mini S&P futures (ESZ25) are up +0.82%, and December E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQZ25) are up +1.30%.
US stocks rallied today after US and Chinese negotiators, who met over the weekend in Malaysia, said they reached a tentative trade agreement to be finalized at Thursday’s summit between Presidents Trump and Xi on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference in South Korea. Treasury Secretary Bessent said the agreement means that the US threat of a 100% tariff on US imports from China starting November 1 is “effectively off the table.” Meanwhile, China agreed not to restrict the export of rare earth metals for at least one year and to buy a “substantial” amount of US soybeans. The two sides also made progress on shipping fees and US demands that China crack down on the export to the US of fentanyl and precursors. The two sides may also reach an agreement that would allow US consumers to continue to access TikTok.

Treasury Secretary Bessent said today that the pool of candidates for the next Fed Chair has been narrowed to Christopher Waller, Kevin Warsh, Kevin Hassett, Michelle Bowman, and Rick Rieder. President Trump is expected to announce a decision on a new Fed Chair by year-end to replace current Fed Chair Powell, whose term as the Fed Chairman ends on May 15, 2026. Mr. Powell’s term as a Fed Governor runs until January 2028, although he will face pressure from Mr. Trump to step down as a Fed Governor as well, so Mr. Trump can appoint a more dovish Fed governor.
This will be a busy week, with the FOMC meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday, when it is expected to cut its federal funds rate target by -25 bp. Also, five of the Magnificent Seven stocks report earnings this week, with Alphabet, Meta, and Microsoft reporting on Wednesday, and Apple and Amazon.com reporting on Thursday.
There is some carry-over support from last Friday’s Sep US CPI report of +3.0% y/y for both the nominal and core figures, which was slightly weaker than expectations for both of +3.1% y/y.
Trade relations with Canada are a negative factor for stocks after President Trump on Saturday said he will impose a new 10% tariff on US imports from Canada as punishment for last week’s anti-tariff advertisement released by the provincial government of Ontario. Mr. Trump initially said only that he was halting US trade negotiations with Canada due to the ad, but he escalated the punishment over the weekend by imposing a new 10% tariff, even though Ontario had agreed to pause the ad campaign.
Ontario’s ad featured former US President Reagan speaking out in a 1987 address in favor of free trade and against tariffs, calling tariffs an outdated idea that stifles innovation, drives up prices, and hurts US workers. Mr. Trump claimed the ad was deceptive and said it was designed to influence the US Supreme Court ahead of oral arguments on November 5 on the legality of Mr. Trump’s reciprocal tariffs. Lower courts have already deemed Mr. Trump’s reciprocal tariffs illegal, ruling the tariffs are based on a specious claim of emergency authority. If the US Supreme Court upholds those rulings, the US government will have to refund the tariffs already collected, and Mr. Trump’s power to impose tariffs will be limited to well-founded sections of US trade law.
The US government shutdown continues into its fifth week, weighing on market sentiment and the US economy. The government shutdown is delaying the release of government reports, including all the recent weekly initial unemployment claims reports, the September unemployment and payroll report, Aug trade balance, Sep retail sales, Sep PPI, Sep housing starts, Sep industrial production, Sep leading indicators, and others. Bloomberg Economics estimates that 640,000 federal workers will be furloughed during the shutdown, which would expand jobless claims and push the unemployment rate up to 4.7%.
The markets are focused on earnings results as the Q3 earnings season continues. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, 84% of the S&P 500 companies that have reported so far have beaten forecasts, on course for the best quarter since 2021. However, Q3 profits are expected to have risen by +7.2% y/y, the smallest increase in two years. Also, Q3 sales growth is projected to slow to +5.9% y/y from +6.4% in Q2.
Overseas stock markets today are higher. The Euro Stoxx 50 is up +0.27%. China’s Shanghai Composite closed up +1.18%. Japan’s Nikkei Stock 225 closed up +2.46%.
Interest Rates
December 10-year T-notes (ZNZ5) are down -4.5 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is up +1.0 bp at 4.010%. T-note prices are trading lower due to the US-Chinese trade agreement, which is positive for the US and Chinese economies. T-note prices are also being pressured by the rally in US stocks and today’s +0.7 bp rise in the 10-year breakeven inflation expectations rate.
T-notes have support from the ongoing US government shutdown, which could lead to additional job losses, reduced consumer spending, and a weakened US economy, potentially allowing the Fed to continue cutting interest rates.
The markets are discounting a 97% chance of a -25 bp rate cut at this week’s FOMC meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday (Oct 28-29).
European government bond yields are steady to lower. The 10-year German bund yield is unchanged at 2.626%. The 10-year UK gilt yield is down -2.0 bp at 4.411%.
Swaps are discounting a 1% chance for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on October 30.
US Stock Movers
The Magnificent Seven stocks are all trading higher today, led by gains of more than +2% in Nvidia (NVDA), Alphabet (GOOG), Tesla (TSLA), and Meta Platforms (META).
Chip stocks are trading higher across the board today, led by gains of more than +3% in Intel (INTC) and Lam Research (LRCX).
Crypto stocks are trading higher today, with support from today’s gains of more than +3% in Bitcoin (^BTCUSD) and +5% in Ethereum (^ETHUSD). Strategy (MSTR), MARA Holdings (MARA), and Riot Platforms (RIOT) are up more than +2%. Coinbase (COIN) is up more than +1%.
Avidity Biosciences (RNA) is up +42% after news that Swiss-based Novartis plans to buy the company in a deal worth $12 billion. Novartis ADR shares (NVS) down -2%.
Ohio-based Huntington Bancshares (HBAN) agreed to buy Cadence Bank (CADE) for $7.4 billion in an all-stock deal to expand into the Southeast and South. Huntington is down -2% while Cadence is up more than +4%.
Keurig Dr Pepper (KDP) is up more than +4% after raising its full-year net sales guidance.
Lululemon Athletica (LULU) is up more than +2% on news of an agreement with the National Football League and sports merchandiser Fanatics Inc to develop a line of fan apparel.
Robinhood (HOOD) is up more than 5% after CICC gave the brokerage a new rating of outperform.
Newmont (NEM) is down -4% as the company seeks to gain control of Barrick’s gold mines in Nevada.
Boeing (BA) is trading slightly higher even though factory workers in St Louis narrowly rejected a new 5-year contract that would have ended a 3-month strike that has disrupted the company’s main military manufacturing operations.

Looking at units outstanding versus one week prior within the universe of ETFs covered at ETF Channel, the biggest outflow was seen in the Direxion Daily TSLA Bull 1.5X Shares, where 13,400,000 units were destroyed, or a 3.4% decrease week over week. Among the largest underlying components of TSLL, in morning trading today Tesla Inc (TSLA) is up about 3.3%.
And on a percentage change basis, the ETF with the biggest outflow was the RGTZ ETF, which lost 4,520,000 of its units, representing a 39.5% decline in outstanding units compared to the week prior.

Despite record deliveries, profits fell sharply.

The valuation is inflated by future promises.
Coming into Tesla's (NASDAQ: TSLA) third-quarter earnings report, the leading producer of electric vehicles (EVs) reported a record number of deliveries. With the help of the pull-forward effect from the expiring EV tax credit, unit sales rose in Q3 to 497,099, up 7% from the quarter a year ago and increased 29% from Q3.
However, investors had to wait until Wednesday to get a full snapshot of Tesla's financial performance, and they were generally underwhelmed.

The stock edged down in after-hours trading, but considering its monster gains over the last year, the modest sell-off of just 3.1% isn't a bad outcome for investors.
Overall revenue rose 12% to $28.1 billion, which beat the consensus at $26.7 billion. Automotive revenue rose 6% to $21.2 billion, while energy generation and services delivered stronger growth.
However, profitability continued to suffer, a sign that vehicle prices are being pressured as costs are going up. Despite the 12% increase in revenue, gross profit rose just 1% to $5.1 billion, meaning gross margin fell from 19.8% to 18%.
Operating income fell 40% to $1.6 billion, which included a $238 million restructuring charge. Adjusted earnings per share (EPS) fell from $0.72 to $0.50, which missed estimates at $0.56.
Tesla looks toward the future
CEO Elon Musk has been a master at redirecting investor attention, which is why the stock has been able to soar and achieve a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio over 200 even when revenue is growing just 12% and earnings are falling sharply.
Musk has spent the last few years touting the company's transition to autonomy, including self-driving vehicles and its Optimus robot. In June, it launched Robotaxi service in Austin, Texas in a small pilot program, and it then expanded it to the San Francisco Bay Area in Q3. The program still has human drivers in order to be safe, though Musk wants to get rid of them.
Looking ahead to 2026, Tesla said the fully autonomous Cybercab was on schedule for volume production in 2026, along with the Tesla Semi and Megapack 3 for energy storage. It also said first-generation production lines for Optimus robots are being installed. And management continues to tout the potential of AI across its product portfolio.
Two reasons to be concerned
Despite Musk's continuing to talk up Tesla's future, the current picture, especially in its core EV segment, is not good. As you can see from the chart, its EV market share has been on a general decline for the last two years.
That chart shows its market share of all vehicle sales, and the uptick in the U.S. is likely due to the approaching end of the $7,500 EV credit, which gave its sales a one-time bump in Q3. It wouldn't be surprising to see the decline resume in Q4.
The company has lost nearly a percentage point of market share in Europe over the last two years, and intense competition in China seems to be eating away at its market share, which has also declined in recent quarters.
Looking at this next chart, you can see that Tesla's EV sales also appear to have peaked. Even as it just reported its best quarter of deliveries, it peaked in 2023 on a trailing-12-month basis.
As you can see, vehicle sales have plateaued over the last two years and even declined in recent quarters.
Whatever technological breakthrough might be around the corner for the company, it seems unlikely to turn around the general slide in vehicle sales, especially now that the tax credit is gone. And rising auto loan delinquencies could spell trouble for vehicle sales across the broader EV market.
Tesla's valuation has defied reality for several quarters, but sustained weakness in the EV business should eventually catch up with the stock. Next year will be a big test for the company, considering the product lineup it has set for release, including the Cybercab. But the automaker needs some kind of breakthrough to justify its current valuation.

2 Charts That Show Why Tesla Is Still in Trouble

U.S. legacy automaker Ford F and electric vehicle biggie Tesla TSLA released third-quarter 2025 results last week. While Ford surpassed earnings estimates, Tesla missed the same despite record deliveries. Tesla’s operating income contracted 40% year over year in the last reported quarter amid higher year-over-year SG&A, R&D and restructuring expenses.
Tesla is betting high on autonomous vehicles (AVs) and robotaxis as its next growth frontier. On the latestearnings call CEO Elon Musk even said that the company plans to move closer to unsupervised autonomy, targeting the removal of safety drivers from robotaxis in much of Austin by year-end. Meanwhile, Ford’s hybrid strategy is likely to gain traction as EV adoption in the United States is set to slow down following the expiration of $7,500 federal EV tax credit incentive at the end of September. Additionally, Ford is taking steps to roll out new affordable EV offerings to match customers’ preferences.
Both auto giants are at pivotal junctures now. Over the past three months, shares of Tesla have gained 33%, while Ford has risen roughly 22%. Let’s compare their growth drivers and challenges to see which stock is currently placed better.

The Case for Tesla
Tesla delivered 497,099 vehicles in the third quarter of 2025, up 7.4% year over year, and set a new quarterly record. However, this surge likely reflected a “pull forward” effect, as buyers rushed to take advantage of the expiring $7,500 federal EV tax credit. Other automakers, including Ford and General Motors, also logged record EV sales from this incentive-driven spike.
The quarter offered Tesla a temporary breather after sales volumes fell for the first two quarters of the year. Demand has been challenged by a maturing lineup, intensifying competition and reduced pricing power. While management highlighted strong operational momentum going forward without providing any specific delivery guidance, it also admitted that margins would remain under pressure from price cuts and higher costs.
One bright spot continues to be Tesla’s Energy Storage segment. The company posted record deployments across residential, industrial and utility markets, fueled by strong demand for its Megapack and Powerwall products. This division is now Tesla’s most profitable, with the highest margins among its businesses.
Another catalyst could be Tesla’s big pivot into artificial intelligence (AI), autonomous driving and robotics. Its robotaxi service, launched in Austin in June, has been expanded to California, Nevada and Arizona. With millions of vehicles already equipped with self-driving hardware, Tesla is positioned to scale quickly once regulations evolve. Musk plans to test robotaxis in 8-10 metro areas by year-end.
Looking ahead, Tesla is focused on new product launches, including the Cybercab, Tesla Semi, and Megapack 3, all slated for 2026. The Optimus humanoid robot is another ambitious project, with a production-intent prototype expected in early 2026. Financially, Tesla remains strong, ending the third quarter with over $41 billion in cash and investments and generating a record $4 billion in free cash flow.
The Case for Ford
Ford's vehicle lineup is strong, led by the F-Series, Maverick pickup and SUVs like the Escape, Explorer, Expedition, Bronco and EcoSport. The F-Series is on track to retain its title as America’s best-selling truck for the 49th consecutive year. Bronco delivered another record quarter in the three months ending September with a segment share above 30%, while Expedition achieved its best third-quarter performance in two decades, driven by strong demand for premium trims such as the Tremor.
Ford dominates the hybrid truck market, holding roughly 70% share, reflecting growing consumer preference for hybrid options amid a slowing EV adoption rate. The company’s Ford Pro division remains a key growth driver. Its integrated model combining vehicles, software and services is fueling higher recurring revenues and stronger margins. Paid software subscriptions continue to expand, boosting aftermarket parts sales and customer retention.
Ford is investing in long-term electrification through its Universal EV Platform, which will underpin digitally advanced, affordable EVs priced around $30,000. The company plans to start installing equipment for UEV production in Louisville and begin LFP battery cell production at its Michigan facility later this year.
Financially, Ford’s position remains solid, ending the third quarter of 2025 with $54 billion in liquidity, including $33 billion in cash. Its dividend yield above 4% offers strong income potential, and management aims to return 40–50% of free cash flow to shareholders.
However, Ford faces near-term challenges from the Novelis aluminum plant fire, which disrupted supply and is expected to cause an EBIT hit of $1.5–$2 billion in the fourth quarter of 2025 and reduce free cash flow by $2-$3 billion. As a result, the company trimmed its 2025 EBIT forecast to $6-$6.5 billion, down from $10.2 billion in 2024 and below its earlier forecast of $6.5-$7.5 billion, reflecting temporary margin pressure.

Despite record Q3 deliveries, Tesla continues to grapple with softening demand (especially in Europe), rising competition from Chinese EV players and policy headwinds. Its ambitious bets on AI, robotaxis and robotics could take years to yield meaningful results, and the company’s history of missed timelines adds execution risk.
While the promise of unsupervised robotaxis remains exciting, it still hinges on successful rollout and regulatory approvals. So, investing in Tesla now will be mostly betting on the company’s high hopes and ambitions.
Ford, meanwhile, faces challenges of its own, including EV losses, recall costs and tariff pressures. Yet it is actively reshaping its EV strategy, strengthening its profitable Ford Pro business, and leveraging a solid balance sheet to support growth and shareholder returns.
The automaker also expects evolving global emissions regulations to ease compliance costs by 2026, allowing better optimization of its ICE, hybrid and EV mix. While the Novelis plant fire poses near-term headwinds, Ford’s diversified portfolio and steady execution make it a relatively stronger bet among the two for now.
