Tesla, Inc. designs, develops, manufactures, leases, and sells electric vehicles, and energy generation and storage systems in the United States, China, and internationally. The company operates in two segments, Automotive, and Energy Generation and Storage. The Automotive segment offers electric vehicles, as well as sells automotive regulatory credits; and non-warranty after-sales vehicle, used vehicles, body shop and parts, supercharging, retail merchandise, and vehicle insurance services. This segment also provides sedans and sport utility vehicles through direct and used vehicle sales, a network of Tesla Superchargers, and in-app upgrades; purchase financing and leasing services; services for electric vehicles through its company-owned service locations and Tesla mobile service technicians; and vehicle limited warranties and extended service plans. The Energy Generation and Storage segment engages in the design, manufacture, installation, sale, and leasing of solar energy generation and energy storage products, and related services to residential, commercial, and industrial customers and utilities through its website, stores, and galleries, as well as through a network of channel partners; and provision of service and repairs to its energy product customers, including under warranty, as well as various financing options to its solar customers. The company was formerly known as Tesla Motors, Inc. and changed its name to Tesla, Inc. in February 2017. Tesla, Inc. was incorporated in 2003 and is headquartered in Austin, Texas.

It's not surprising that Wood holds shares of Musk-led companies because her investment strategy involves getting in on innovators early -- before they accomplish major goals. Wood's SpaceX holding, through the Ark Venture Fund, took place in the private market, as the company's valuation climbed from $350 billion in 2024 to the current valuation of more than $2.1 trillion. The stock began trading on June 12, after raising $75 billion in the world's biggest IPO on record.
So, now you might wonder: What move did Wood make on IPO day? Let's find out, and consider if you should follow.
SpaceX lockup restrictions
First, it's important to note that Wood can't sell SpaceX shares immediately because she is restricted by a lockup period. During this period, early investors in the company aren't allowed to sell their shares. Often, lockup periods span the first 90 to 180 days after the IPO. The idea is to prevent a great number of shares from flooding the market in a short period of time as some of the company's first supporters lock in some gains.
SpaceX put into place a tiered lockup schedule so that early investors may sell a certain percentage of their shares at various intervals. The first comes after the second-quarter earnings report in late July.
So, it's clear that, on IPO day, Wood didn't sell her SpaceX shares. But she didn't remain inactive either. In fact, Wood took the opportunity to increase her investment in the industrial and technology player. She added the stock to four of her six actively managed exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
Here are the specific moves Cathie Wood made:
Ark Innovation bought 1,690,839 shares of SpaceX. The stock now has a 3.2% weight in the fund.
Ark Autonomous Technology bought 736,442 shares of SpaceX. It has a 4.5% weight in the fund.
Ark Next Generation Internet bought 325,562 SpaceX shares. The stock accounts for 2.6% of the fund.
Ark Space and Defense bought 538,341 SpaceX shares. That's for a 6.8% weighting.
The purchases potentially put SpaceX in the top 10 holdings of Ark Innovation and Ark Autonomous Technology, and in the top five holdings of Ark Space and Defense.
Cathie Wood's belief in SpaceX
Wood's moves may reassure investors for one particular reason. As mentioned, she's not authorized to sell her SpaceX shares yet, but on IPO day, she actually bought more SpaceX shares. These actions confirm Wood's belief in the SpaceX story -- and suggest that she still thinks it's a reasonable buy, even at the company's opening price of $150 per share. SpaceX priced at $135 and went on to deliver a gain of almost 20% in its first day of trading.
So, what does this mean for you as an investor? Should you follow Wood and buy SpaceX stock? This depends greatly on your comfort with risk and your investment strategy. If you're an aggressive investor who, like Wood, aims to get in early on innovations, and you aren't too worried about risk, you might pick up a few shares -- but it's important to remember that you don't have to rush to do so. It's very likely that SpaceX, like most stocks, won't climb in one straight line and will offer buying opportunities at various times.
If you're a cautious investor, however, you might be better off waiting a bit longer before buying to see to what degree SpaceX may monetize some of its investments.

While the range of those buying the shares may be huge, they all have one question in common: "Can this stock make me a millionaire?"

Elon Musk has a history of delivering impressive returns to shareholders
There's one key factor for many investors that is contributing to the notion that SpaceX could be a millionaire-maker stock: Elon Musk. Whether you like him or not doesn't really matter when you look at his track record at Tesla; his success is undeniable.
If you had the foresight to invest in Tesla at its IPO, a $5,000 investment would now be worth over $1 million. That's the kind of success investors want to see out of SpaceX, but is that possible?
Unfortunately, I don't think it is. The major difference between Tesla and SpaceX is the stage at which each went public. For the former, it was a fledgling automaker when it went public, having produced barely over 1,000 vehicles. There were multiple times when the company was on the verge of bankruptcy before becoming the success it is today, and the risk was far greater.
SpaceX is not like that. It's an established company and has three key segments: space, connectivity, and artificial intelligence (AI). All of these business units are producing strong revenue growth, and all but its AI segment are profitable on an adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) basis. There's a lot less risk involved in its stock versus Tesla's when they each went public, so the expected returns should also be less.
There's another factor: the market cap, which is the company's total value. When Tesla went public, it was valued at about $2 billion. SpaceX was at more than $2 trillion on its first day as a publicly traded company. That means SpaceX went public at a size 100 times larger, which limits investors' return potential.
If you want SpaceX to make you a millionaire, you likely need $1 million already. While risk tolerance varies among investors, you would be hard-pressed to find anyone recommending putting more than 10% of a portfolio value in a single stock. Should SpaceX even grow tenfold from here (which would result in a huge, nearly $20 trillion company), you would need $100,000 to put in the stock now. If 10% is your limit, then you're already a millionaire.
As a result, SpaceX isn't a millionaire-maker stock like Tesla was. That doesn't mean it will be a bad investment, but just don't expect Tesla-like returns.

Is SpaceX Stock Your Ticket to Becoming a Millionaire?

Electric vehicle giant Tesla is developing AI-powered humanoid robots, claiming it could begin selling them by late 2027.
Although no specifics were offered, AI powerhouse OpenAI recently confirmed it, too, plans to enter the robot race.
OpenAI's interest in the robotics business makes it clear that Tesla won't be in the business alone. It also highlights the existence of multiple competitors.
ChatGPT parent company OpenAI is looking beyond the virtual world and eying the real one.
That's the takeaway from OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman's recent post on X, anyway. As part of his call for artificial intelligence (AI) engineers, Altman said the company is looking for "engineers to help us program and manufacture robots that are useful for society." No interpretation needed.

The question is: What does this mean for Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA), which in January suggested it could be selling autonomous humanoid robot assistants -- called Optimus -- by the end of next year?
Shaking up the still-new AI robotics business
Without knowing more about Altman's vision, it's too soon to say whether OpenAI will be a direct competitor to Tesla, which appears intent on building humanoid robots to handle warehouse and household tasks. OpenAI may end up making robotics meant for industrial assembly lines, dangerous drilling work, or agricultural duties.
There's little doubt, however, that these two companies will eventually compete with one another on the autonomous robot front.
And that's more of a problem for Tesla and its shareholders than it is for OpenAI and its future investors, if it ever goes public, for one simple reason. That is, Tesla stock is already priced at a steep premium. For perspective, Tesla shares are currently trading at nearly 13 times next year's projected revenue of $118 billion and 160 times 2027's expected earnings per share of around $2.60. Both are wildly high, suggesting the stock isn't just priced for perfection, but dominance ... of multiple markets.
Next year's results still won't fully reflect any robot revenue that begins flowing for Tesla in 2027, if any at all. For that matter, it's unlikely OpenAI will have any actual physical robots to start selling next year either.
Much can happen between now and then, though. If nothing else, it gives current and would-be shareholders time and reason to consider the possibility that a well-established rival could compete with Tesla on the robotics front, perhaps eventually even in the humanoid assistant market. And it doesn't hurt that ChatGPT still dominates the AI chatbot landscape, with a near-80% market share, according to numbers from Statcounter. If there's any integration or robot management to be done, it should be handled with relative ease using OpenAI's popular app.
Altman's new focus does something else, too. That is, in that OpenAI already backs robotics start-up 1X Technologies and has previously collaborated with Figure AI, it not only illustrates how other tech companies could enter the robotics market, but also highlights the fact that many such robotics companies like Agility Robotics, Symbotic, and NEURA Robotics -- just to name a few -- already exist.
Yes, it's a (slight) concern
Don't misread the message. Tesla will probably beat everyone else to the personal AI-powered robot market. It's unlikely to dominate this business, though, the way the company dominated the electric vehicle market as it became mainstream. It's the sheer unknown of the matter that works against the stock.
From this perspective, OpenAI's interest in robotics should give Tesla shareholders pause, even if only a modest one.

OpenAI Just Launched a Robotics Division. Should Tesla Investors Be Worried?

Both can serve you well, and one looks less risky.
What's the investment I've recommended most often for most people? A low-fee exchange-traded fund (ETF) that tracks the S&P 500 index, such as the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (NYSEMKT: VOO) or the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (NYSEMKT: SPY). I suspect many of my colleagues would say the same. Even Warren Buffett has recommended it. In his 2016 letter to shareholders, he noted, "Over the years, I've often been asked for investment advice... My regular recommendation has been a low-cost S&P 500 index fund."
So I'm sorry to point out that it's not a perfect kind of investment. It has some issues.

What's wrong with the S&P 500?
Here's a big one: It's way more concentrated than most people realize. For example, check out its recent top 10 components:

Those weightings may not seem huge until you remember that there are about 490 other companies. These 10 above represent about 2% of the index's holdings but 39% of its total value. So if you invest in the S&P 500 because it's a great way to be quickly and easily invested in 500 of America's biggest companies, you are invested in those companies, but more than a third of your investment is in these 10 companies alone.

As you can see, you won't have much invested in the vast majority of the companies.
That can be OK, though. Maybe you like those tech heavyweights in the top 10 -- which include all of the "Magnificent Seven" stocks (Apple, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta Platforms, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Tesla). Maybe you want to invest in the 500 companies, with most of your money going to the biggest. After all, most of them have grown very rapidly over the past few years.
Keep in mind, though, that when there's a stock market crash or correction, as there invariably is now and then, those high-flying growth stocks are often the ones that fall harder. That, too, can be OK as long as you have a very long-term investing period. But it's not ideal.
Is there a better alternative to the S&P 500?
There is an alternative to standard S&P 500 index funds that's worth considering: An equal-weighted one. Standard ones are weighted by market cap, meaning the larger a company's market cap, the greater its weighting. The Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF (NYSEMKT: RSP), in contrast, is equal-weighted. The 500 components are rebalanced quarterly, so between rebalancings you'll see fluctuations in the weightings as various stocks gain or lose value from day to day and year to year. Note that Micron Technology appears in both top 10 lists, but in the earlier one, it has a 1.67% weighting, while in the fund above, it has a much lower weighting of 0.35%. This kind of index fund has you much more invested in the other 490 stocks beyond the top 10 -- though, of course, each stock has a relatively minor weighting. But every promising stock will have an equal chance of outperforming for you.
An equal-weighted S&P 500 ETF may not grow as fast as a market-cap-weighted one, but during a market downturn, it may hold its value a bit more. Over the past 15 years, this ETF has averaged annual gains of about 12%, while the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF has averaged 14.4%. There's a trade-off, but it's not enormous. Give equal-weighted S&P 500 index funds some consideration.

Have S&P 500 Index Funds, Often Touted as the Best Stock Investments, Become Dangerous? There's a Worrisome Development -- and a Possibly Better Alternative.

Space Exploration Technologies (NASDAQ: SPCX), known as SpaceX, is attracting a lot of attention, as it should. It's the largest IPO the world has ever seen, led by the visionary Elon Musk. Although Musk may be a polarizing figure, there's no denying the success he's delivered to investors so far through Tesla.
While investors may want Tesla-like returns, achieving them with SpaceX will be nearly impossible given its sheer size. Instead, I think investors should focus on other stocks that look like great values or are growing at lightspeed. 1. Microsoft
Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) may sound like a boring old investment, which may be partially true. However, it has a few things going for it.
First, it's well off its all-time highs. The market has turned sour on Microsoft's stock despite the company's excellence in many areas, specifically in artificial intelligence (AI). Its AI product lineup grew annual recurring revenue by 123% to $37 billion during its most recent quarter.
Additionally, its cloud computing division, Azure, increased revenue by 40%. Overall, Microsoft's quarterly revenue rose at an 18% pace to $82.9 billion. For reference, SpaceX's 2025 revenue totaled $18.7 billion, up 33%.
Microsoft is also attractively valued, trading at one of the lowest price-to-earnings (P/E) ratios the market has seen in a while.
While SpaceX may be the flashy stock, Microsoft is the workhorse that will deliver for investors over the long term. As a result, I think it's an excellent buy right now.
2. Nebius Group
If Microsoft is growing too slowly for your liking, Nebius (NASDAQ: NBIS) might be a better pick. In one aspect, Nebius and SpaceX may be head-to-head competitors.
Nebius is a neocloud company specializing in AI-ready cloud computing. Part of SpaceX's business plan is to launch AI data centers into space, and whether it's a success remains to be seen.
One thing that isn't up for debate is Nebius's success right now. In the first quarter, it grew revenue by 684% year over year. That's not the end of it, either. Wall Street analysts expect 550% revenue growth for 2026 and 225% in 2027. SpaceX can only dream of growth like that, and it doesn't have any divisions remotely close to Nebius's growth rate.
I think Nebius is primed to continue growing rapidly and will easily outpace SpaceX over the next few years, making it a better stock pick.
3. Nvidia
If you're looking for a combination of growth and value, then Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) is your ticket.
The world's largest company makes GPUs that power AI workloads in data centers. It's growing at a remarkable pace right now and is expected to keep that up for some time. For fiscal year (FY) 2027 (ending January 2027), Wall Street analysts expect 81% growth and 41% in FY 2028. Those are both faster growth rates than SpaceX is currently growing, and Nvidia can also be purchased at a pretty attractive valuation.
At 31 times earnings, it's not particularly expensive, especially compared to other tech stocks like Apple and Amazon, which trade at 36 and 29 times earnings, respectively. Neither of these (or any other big tech stock, including SpaceX) has growth remotely close to Nvidia.
Nvidia is a rare combination of growth and value and will likely result in huge returns. I think it will easily outperform SpaceX moving forward, and I'm putting my money there instead of the latest hot IPO.

They're finally here. Deliveries of the much-anticipated Rivian (NASDAQ: RIVN) R2 fleet have begun, and so begins an extraordinarily important chapter for the electric vehicle (EV) maker. The R2 isn't just another model. With a starting price of less than $47,000, it's Rivian's push into the mainstream through a more affordable option.
The company's ability to challenge Tesla's (NASDAQ: TSLA) dominance really hinges on the success and reception of the R2. Rivian's previous models are luxury-oriented, with price tags starting at over $70,000. They are highly rated by drivers, but because of their price point, they are out of reach for most.

It hasn't been an easy year for EV makers. The federal EV tax credit was eliminated, and demand for EVs has subsided in the U.S. Several legacy automakers have also downsized or canceled EV-related plans. While the environment is challenging for Rivian, there is an opportunity to reinvigorate the EV market and capture additional market share, especially from dominant rival Tesla.
Rivian's business model is divided into two segments: automotive and software and services. The automotive division is still posting heavy losses, but software and services are profitable. Rivian's total revenue for the first quarter of 2026 reached $1.38 billion, an 11% increase from the year prior. The company's stock has decreased by about 20% in 2026 as of this writing.
Tesla still dominates Rivian in terms of market share. Combined, Tesla and China's BYD account for about 25% of all EVs worldwide. Rivian has a very long way to go to overtake Tesla in the U.S. and then compete globally, but the first step is through the success and growing popularity of the affordable R2.
If this fleet is a hit among mainstream drivers in the U.S., it'll help Rivian gain important ground in the U.S. I wouldn't count on Tesla being dethroned for several more years, however.

Can Rivian Beat Tesla in the Long Term?

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) and SpaceX (NASDAQ: SPCX) CEO Elon Musk just crossed a line no one ever has. With the public-market debut of SpaceX on Friday, the value of his stake in the rocket and satellite company pushed his net worth past $1 trillion, making him the world's first trillionaire. In fact, as of this writing, he's worth more than the next four people on the global wealth rankings combined.
But for the millions of people who own Tesla stock, the milestone is less a story about Tesla than about where Musk's fortune now sits. After Friday's debut, his SpaceX stake was worth more than $760 billion -- well over twice the value of the Tesla shares he holds. The company that made Musk famous is no longer where most of his wealth lives.

Tesla, still about a $1.3 trillion company, is now just one of two enormous public companies Musk leads. Here's a closer look at what that means for its shareholders.
How SpaceX minted a trillionaire
SpaceX priced its initial public offering (IPO) at $135 a share, opened around $150 on Friday, and pushed higher from there, ending its first trading day valued at more than $2 trillion. That makes the rocket maker one of the largest companies in the United States, built on an offering that raised about $75 billion.
This isn't only a space company, though. Earlier this year, SpaceX merged with Musk's artificial intelligence (AI) start-up, xAI, putting a fast-growing AI business inside the company that just went public. And Tesla is tied to the result: it owns a small stake in SpaceX, which in turn is a Tesla customer for Megapack batteries and Cybertrucks. Further, through a dual-class structure, Musk controls about 82% of SpaceX's voting power while owning about 42% of its equity -- a degree of control he doesn't have at the carmaker.
None of this means Musk is stepping back from Tesla. Last year, Tesla shareholders approved a pay package that could be worth about $1 trillion if he hits a long list of valuation and operational targets, an arrangement built to keep him focused on the company for years. But he now sits atop two public businesses of staggering size, and his attention, like his fortune, is split across both.
What it means for Tesla investors
In the meantime, Tesla isn't the growth story it used to be.
The electric-car maker's revenue fell about 3% in 2025 -- the first annual revenue decline in the company's history. And even after a stronger first quarter to start off 2026 (revenue rose 16% to $22.4 billion, with about 358,000 vehicles delivered), the company earned just $477 million in net income. Against earnings that thin, the stock trades at about 370 times earnings as of this writing.
That price only makes sense if you believe Tesla becomes something far larger than a carmaker. And that belief rests almost entirely on Musk's vision for autonomy and robots -- the same kind of long-term bet that drives SpaceX.
"I think Optimus will be our biggest product, not just Tesla's biggest product ever, but probably the biggest product ever," Musk said during Tesla's first-quarterearnings call referring to its humanoid robot.
So, Tesla investors are really betting on Musk himself -- his vision and his willingness to keep funding it.
Additionally, management has guided capital expenditures of more than $25 billion this year (a huge step up from last year) -- largely for factories and AI infrastructure. Significant capital expenditures like this add significant risk for the stock.
A public SpaceX shifts the picture in a subtler way, too. A large block of Musk's SpaceX shares does not vest unless, among other conditions, the company someday builds a colony on Mars. But he can borrow against them, which means his potential access to cash is increasingly tied to SpaceX, not Tesla.
And for years, buying Tesla was one of the only ways for public investors to bet on Musk's biggest ambitions. That's no longer true. Anyone who wants exposure to his space and AI dreams can now simply buy SpaceX, without taking on a struggling car business to get it. Some investors are even watching whether the two companies could eventually merge.
So, what does all of this mean for Tesla stock?
Less than the trillionaire headlines suggest. Musk's net worth doesn't change how many cars Tesla sells or whether its robotaxi bet ever pays off. What the moment does is sharpen the real question for shareholders: Tesla is now one of two giant companies competing for Musk's time and capital, and investors finally have a more direct way to own his boldest bet. I think that puts the focus where it belongs -- on Tesla's autonomy and AI story, not Musk's place on the rich list.

Elon Musk Is Now the World's First Trillionaire. For Tesla Shareholders, the More Important Question Is What Comes Next.

The size of SpaceX in and of itself isn't exactly an issue, but there are factors to consider before you buy it and for the market as a whole.
After all the buildup, the SpaceX (NASDAQ: SPCX) initial public offering (IPO) was perhaps a bit of a letdown. That's not necessarily because of the stock's performance, which was notable, but because the months of lead-up ended in an event that was completed in, basically, a day. It was sort of like waiting an hour for a roller coaster ride that only lasts three minutes.
Now that SpaceX is public, however, investors need to consider what it means. And one of the biggest issues is the company's massive size. With a $2.1 trillion market cap after just its first day of trading, it is already one of the world's largest companies. Here are a few things to think about if you own it, are considering buying it, or are just investing more broadly.

How did the SpaceX IPO go?
For those who remember the dot-com bubble, the SpaceX IPO wasn't that impressive. Back at the turn of the century, it was common for IPOs to double in a day. SpaceX "only" saw a price increase of around 19%, with the IPO price set at $135 per share and the stock closing its first day at roughly $160.
From a functional perspective, the bankers who handled the IPO did a pretty good job pricing it. Still, by the end of the day, the company's market cap ballooned to $2.1 trillion. There are only six companies that are larger than SpaceX, and it is a pretty tight race with Taiwan Semiconductor (NYSE: TSM) for the sixth spot, as the chipmaker's market cap is $2.199 trillion.
The good news here is that the market absorbed the IPO in relative stride. That bodes well for the future, since there are more large IPOs on tap, including Anthropic and OpenAI.
The size of SpaceX has led to big index changes
That said, SpaceX's size, combined with the company's popularity, has led to interesting shifts in the world of indexes. While the S&P 500 index (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) is holding to its inclusion rules, other indexes have made changes to quickly add SpaceX to their index lists. For example, the Nasdaq-100 will likely add SpaceX after around 15 days.
Being added to an index will lead index funds to buy the stock, creating additional demand for the shares. Inclusion in indexes will also create a base of investors who have no choice but to own the stock. The normal dynamics of a smaller IPO don't apply here, and, for the most part, the market is in uncharted waters. However, it seems reasonable to expect the shares to hold up, if not rise some more, at least in the near term. From a longer-term perspective, it seems reasonable to expect Anthropic and OpenAI to receive early index inclusions as well.
What about SpaceX as a business?
SpaceX is already a massive company, but it is also spending heavily on research and development because "space" is still an emerging technology. While SpaceX is currently a leader in the space industry, there's no guarantee it will remain there. And, perhaps equally important, remaining a leader will likely mean SpaceX remains a money-losing business for longer. And then there's the massive capital being spent on Grok, SpaceX's AI product. Once again, a huge investment is needed to compete in the AI sector. Red ink is likely to be the norm for quite a while.
While the company's Starlink business is highly profitable, it is merely subsidizing its investments in space exploration and artificial intelligence. And even that isn't enough, since the company clearly needed to raise additional capital by going public. Buying SpaceX today is a bet that Elon Musk's vision will, someday, lead to a profitable business. That belief worked out well with Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA), but there's no guarantee of a repeat performance.
In fact, despite its massive size, SpaceX is really just a money-losing start-up. If you wouldn't be comfortable owning a smaller money-losing start-up, you should probably think twice about buying SpaceX. A $2.1 trillion market cap doesn't magically turn SpaceX into a "safe" investment.
SpaceX: Think before you take this leap of faith
Headline-grabbing events on Wall Street don't always work out as well as hoped over the long term. Right now, the excitement is high, but if SpaceX continues to bleed red ink, investor enthusiasm could quickly wane. For risk-averse investors, the best way to own SpaceX might be through a diversified index fund. More aggressive growth investors may want to jump aboard, but you'll probably want to think of the unprofitable company as a long-term holding.
