What this means for investors
Stellantis shares bounced off a record-low close yesterday after reporting third-quarter sales results and reaffirming its 2026 guidance and long-term financial goals. Total pickup sales jumped 34%, with sales of the popular Ram 1500 soaring 73% year over year.
Stallantis CEO Antonio Filosa used the report to help convince investors that the company's turnaround is on track. Filosa confirmed that the company believes it will still achieve a net revenue increase in the mid-single-digit percentage range this year and expects to be cash flow positive by next year, with an upward trajectory.
Stellantis' stock closed at an all-time low yesterday, but that may turn out to be the bottom if the company achieves its cash flow and profitability goals.

To say that General Motors (NYSE: GM) has been doing a lot correctly lately might be an understatement. If the past three years have been a race, GM would be lapping its nearest rivals in Ford Motor Company and Stellantis -- and even its Japanese competition. So, if the automaker is doing so many things correctly, why is it betting big on hunky V-8 engines when the competition is driving toward the hybrid sales boom? And will the decision cost investors by bringing its stock gains back down to earth?
Let's set the stage
As regulatory and policy changes severely hinder electric vehicle (EV) sales growth in the U.S., consumers have flocked to hybrids as gasoline prices continue to rise amid the Iran conflict. GM made a big gamble with its aggressive strategy to try to skip over the hybrid middle phase and focus more heavily on the long-term EV stage -- a costly mistake that forced the company to take billions in charges and write-downs.
Its competitors invested more in hybrids through this whole process, and they're reaping the benefits. Toyota, at the other end of the spectrum, accounted for 49% of U.S. hybrid sales during the first quarter of 2026, according to Cox Automotive.
On the other hand, GM currently sells one hybrid vehicle, and that's a Corvette. In comparison, Ford has a profitable and broad list of hybrid options. It has strong sales from its F-150 and Maverick hybrids, while also discontinuing light-duty diesels. So is GM doubling down by introducing new V-8 engines and high-mileage diesels instead of rebounding with more hybrid options?
What GM is doing
On Sept. 17, GM unveiled two sixth-generation small-block V-8 engine options for its redesigned Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickups that go on sale this fall. This is happening even while dealers, investors, and analysts see competitors building hybrid powertrains as gasoline and diesel prices are up 39% and 73%, respectively, compared to a year ago, according to the AAA.
This looks like a big mistake at first glance, but there are a couple of reasons behind this decision. First, investors know that full-size trucks are the industry's bread-and-butter for juicy margins and big profits, and GM needs to optimize those sales to help offset increased costs from tariffs and the billions in write-downs the automaker took over the past year for driving too fast on its EV strategy.
Second, investors have to consider that these engines aren't developed overnight. The automaker has been working on them before the Trump administration threw multiple curveballs at the automotive industry, and GM will continue to deliver new technology with its gasoline-powered trucks that, even with an eventual transition to EVs, will still have a market.
What it all means
John Murphy, who became a widely respected voice in the automotive industry during his 26 years as Bank of America's automotive analyst, said that General Motors' avoidance of hybrids "is not as clear a major mistake as I think some people believe."
And although the company sells only one hybrid currently, it's not going to stay that way. It is bringing some plug-in hybrids to the market as soon as next year. There aren't clear details yet, but the automaker is likely to focus on adding plug-in hybrid options to its best-selling vehicles and perhaps those that share platforms. The Chevrolet Equinox, Buick Envision, GMC Terrain, and Cadillac XT4 all share a platform for which a hybrid powertrain could be added.
The headlines of GM investing in more gas-guzzling V-8 engines while consumers are more rapidly buying hybrids sound worse than they are. Management is doing a lot of things right. The graph at the beginning isn't going to change because of this strategic move.

For FY 2025, revenue was approximately $178.0 billion, which was a decrease of nearly 2.1% year-over-year. The company faced significant headwinds during this period, reporting a net loss of roughly $25.9 billion. This produced a negative net margin of about 14.6%, reflecting higher costs and lower volumes during the fiscal year.
In its December 2025 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio was approximately 0.9x. This indicates a more conservative use of debt relative to equity compared to some larger competitors. The current ratio stood at roughly 1.0x, and free cash flow was negative $15.3 billion, which occurrs when capital expenditures exceed the cash generated from business operations.
Risk profile comparison
Ford faces execution risks as it attempts to integrate its strategic Ford+ initiatives and modernize global systems. Which stock would I buy in 2026?
I'd go with Ford, though this is a choice between two turnarounds at different stages, not between a winner and a loser.
Stellantis is showing encouraging signs. After a bruising 2025, revenue grew sharply year over year, shipments climbed, and the company returned to a small profit in Q2. The cost reduction program is ambitious and on track, and the Leapmotor partnership is gaining traction in Europe's growing EV market. But management flagged significant second-half headwinds from plant shutdowns, lower volumes, and roughly a billion euros in charges still to come. Positive free cash flow is not expected until 2027.
Ford's situation is not dramatically cleaner, but its commercial vehicle business in Ford Pro keeps outperforming and the quality turnaround is gaining traction. The dividend provides a floor for patient shareholders while the recovery plays out. When both companies are in the midst of challenging turnarounds, owning the one already returning cash to shareholders is the more comfortable starting point.

When all is said and done, the global automotive industry might evolve and transform more over the next decade than it has in the past century. Electric vehicles (EVs) are rapidly advancing; vehicles are becoming more software defined, enabling developments like over-the-air updates; automakers are investing heavily in artificial intelligence (AI) and driverless cars, and more services. And of course, subscriptions are adding value to the daily commuter. It's an exciting time in the industry, and margins should rise on the road ahead.
When investing in the automotive industry, names such as Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA), Rivian (NASDAQ: RIVN), BYD Co., or the Italian juggernaut Ferrari (NYSE: RACE) probably jump to mind, but institutional money is actually pouring into legacy auto Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F). There was nearly $7 billion of institutional buying of Ford stock during the second quarter of 2026 alone, more than during all of 2025. Here's a look at what's likely driving the move into Ford stock.

Reversing a huge problem
Of course, there are plenty of variables and reasons that could be driving the renewed interest in Ford, but here are two major developments that could be behind it. First, we have to consider that investors and analysts are finally getting raw data that Ford is fixing one of its biggest and most costly problems: vehicle quality. Ford ranked above all competitors in a category it didn't want to win in 2025: manufacturer with most recall campaigns. Ford topped the list with 153 recall campaigns last year, covering nearly 13 million vehicles. Ford had more recall campaigns in the U.S. than any competitor during each of the past five years except in 2024 when Stellantis took the crown briefly.
Not all recalls are created equal, and over-the-air updates can cheaply fix a long list of vehicle issues, but if the vehicle needs physical repairs, it can get costly. Investors will remember Q2 2024 when Ford's total warranty and recall costs surged to $2.3 billion, a $700 million increase over the prior year. It sent pretax profits plunging and crippled Ford's ability to meet Wall Street estimates; the stock initially plunged almost 18%.
Here's the good news! While Ford has for years preached that correcting vehicle quality was a top priority, investors had to rely on the company's word about its internal metrics pointing in a positive direction. That changed when JD Power released its 2026 U.S. Initial Quality Study, which grades brands on "problems per 100 vehicles (PP100)." The lower the score the better. Ford ranked third overall, behind only Porsche and Genesis, and was easily the highest-ranked mass-market brand. The study average reported PP175, while Ford checked in with far fewer problems and a score of PP152. Only three years ago, Ford ranked 23rd in the same study, lending credibility to the idea that Ford is fixing one of its biggest long-term problems.
But wait, there's more
In addition to fixing its vehicle quality woes -- which will take time to filter into the massive number of older Ford vehicles on the road right now -- Wall Street also noticed Ford's newest ambition: Ford Energy. Ford stock soared nearly 50% in May alone before giving back roughly half of those gains since, following the announcement of Ford Energy, which would deliver battery energy storage systems (BESS) to large industrial customers and artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. The latter needs uninterrupted power and a system that helps cut costs by charging when electricity is cheaper and discharging when prices are peaking.
Ford is investing roughly $2 billion to repurpose its Glendale, Kentucky manufacturing plant to produce stationary storage systems capable of delivering 20 GWh of battery storage annually. The first deliveries to customers are scheduled for late next year, and Morgan Stanley analysts estimate that at full annual capacity, Ford Energy could generate between $500 million and $600 million in annual operating profits, or earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT).
What it all means
There could be many reasons why Wall Street's interest in Ford has surged, including the company's lucrative 4.1% dividend yield even after its share price rise. Or Wall Street could be optimistic about Ford's plan to refresh roughly 80% of its North America vehicle portfolio by volume by the end of the decade. However, two big reasons likely influencing Wall Street are that Ford is gaining traction by improving vehicle quality and that it is seeking new revenue streams from its EV and battery technology, which could boost margins above the notoriously low-margin narrative that haunts the automotive industry. Whatever it is, Ford is moving in a positive direction, and Wall Street has certainly noticed.

Investors following legacy automakers as the globe transitions to electric vehicles (EVs) might have identified a big opportunity with Stellantis (NYSE: STLA). While Detroit rivals Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) and General Motors (NYSE: GM) have both traded about 5% higher year to date, Stellantis fell off a cliff with a 51% decline. However, with Stellantis putting up a massive $70 billion turnaround plan, it may have the most upside of all three over the next five years. If we zero in on Stellantis' profit engine, its North America region, it has an interesting strategy of what segments it will attack and what products, especially considering its pullback on less profitable EVs, the $25 billion investment could pay off huge.
North America or bust
Stellantis' $70 billion global "FaSTLAne 2030" plan has a plethora of moving parts and regional strategies stretching across the globe, and all will play their own role in the broader turnaround. However, one make-or-break region for the success of its overall turnaround will absolutely be North America, which has remained the company's profit engine since Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and PSA Group merged 50-50, combining 14 historical auto brands from the U.S., Italy, and France.

North America is so important to Stellantis' turnaround that its committing 60% of all brand and product investments from its overall plan directly to North America. Those funds will help develop and launch 11 all-new vehicles, expanding its market coverage by a staggering 50%. Stellantis is taking a calculated approach to exactly how it's attacking new North American segments, and it could make all the difference.
Where is the capital going?
On one end of the spectrum, Stellantis is introducing nine vehicles priced under $40,000, providing some relief to pent-up demand for more affordable vehicles as the average price of new vehicles remains near record highs at around $50,000. Stellantis is also planning to use its Chrysler brand as a more regional path to offering even more affordable vehicles, including two priced below $30,000.
On the other end of the spectrum, Stellantis is also using its popular Jeep and Ram brands to pinpoint more lucrative segments with performance models and all-new products. These are arguably the two most important brands in all of Stellantis' global turnaround. One example of where the investment could pay off big is Ram's first-ever SUV, moving into brand-new territory while reviving its historic Ramcharger nameplate. Ram is also looking to expand beyond its historical "full-size-only" focus with the Rampage, a new compact pickup truck, and by reviving the highly anticipated Dakota midsize truck. But wait, there's more: Ram is also infusing capital into the brand to bring new muscle trucks, including the upcoming Ram Rumble Bee and a new SRT TRX variant.
Not to be left behind, Jeep gets attention in the form of a $600 million investment to reopen a Belvidere Assembly Plant in Illinois which will increase production of the next-generation Jeep Compass and bring back the Jeep Cherokee. Furthermore, Jeep's core product portfolio will undergo a complete overhaul by the end of this decade, with a complete redesign of the Wrangler SUV and Gladiator pickup, refreshed Grand Cherokee and Grand Wagoneer, and a rebooted Street and Racing Technology (SRT) division.
What it all means
Here's the good news, as well as the catch: Stellantis' use of Chrysler and other more affordable models to attack the affordability crisis happening in the U.S. auto market is a brilliant way to increase sales volume and production capacity utilization. The catch is that Stellantis will have work to do on its value strategy and cost-cutting to ensure these vehicles remain profitable, or the turnaround will lose steam.
The Ram brand SUV and Jeep truck are intriguing and will likely be very profitable for the automaker, and bringing back its SRT division and a lineup of new high-performance models should offset the lower-margin push toward vehicles. Together, the balanced approach should bode well for Stellantis as it gears up to return its profit engine, North America, to adjusted operating income margins of 8% to 10%; increase North America volume by 35%; and improve production capacity utilization to 80%, all by the end of the decade. If Stellantis can begin taking steps, as it did during the second half of 2025, to reaching these targets, the stock could rapidly rise over the next few years.

Joby Aviation (NYSE: JOBY) and Archer Aviation (NYSE: ACHR) are both early movers in the nascent electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft market. But over the past 12 months, shares of Joby and Archer have declined about 60% and 40%, respectively.
Without the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) certification for their first commercial flights, both companies struggled to impress their investors. Geopolitical conflicts, inflation, and fears of interest rate hikes also drove many investors toward more conservative investments.

But if we take a closer look at Joby and Archer, we'll notice that one key metric sets the two companies apart. With a market cap of $6.1 billion, Joby trades at 51 times this year's sales. Archer, which is valued at $4.2 billion, trades at 278 times this year's sales. Let's see why Archer's price-to-sales ratio is so much higher than Joby's, and if that will change in the future.
Joby generates much more revenue than Archer
Neither Joby nor Archer generates any revenue from commercial eVTOL flights. However, Joby's revenue surged from less than $1 million in 2024 to $53.4 million in 2025 as it received the first payments from its contracts with the U.S. Air Force's Agility Prime program. It also recognized some revenue from its acquisition of Blade Air Mobility's passenger business, a provider of helicopter and seaplane services, which closed last August.
For 2026, analysts expect its revenue to more than double to $119.5 million as it integrates Blade's passenger business and generates more revenue from its Agility Prime R&D contracts.
Archer also holds contracts with the Agility Prime program, but they function more like government-subsidized test flights rather than revenue-generating R&D projects. Unlike Joby, which plans to become a vertically integrated "transportation as a service" business that manufactures, owns, and operates its own air taxi network, Archer is an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) that sells most of its aircraft to third-party fleets. That's why it hasn't acquired any consumer-facing, revenue-generating businesses.
Archer generated less than $1 million in revenue in 2025. Still, analysts expect that figure to rise to $15.1 million in 2026 as it collects more leases and utilization fees from Hawthorne Airport in Southern California, which it acquired as a hub and test site last November.
But is Archer actually cheaper relative to its long-term growth potential?
The FAA certification process consists of five stages. Joby has already reached the fifth stage, while Archer has just completed the third stage.
Therefore, Joby could launch its first commercial flights in the U.S. before Archer. However, Archer's business could expand faster than Joby's -- albeit at lower margins -- because it's an OEM that will sell its Midnight eVTOLs to other companies. Joby will primarily use its S4 eVTOLs on its own air-taxi network, which will be integrated with Uber's platform.
Both companies have big manufacturing partners. Toyota backs Joby, and Stellantis supports Archer. However, Joby's partnership with Toyota is deeper and more structurally symbiotic than Stellantis' investment-driven deal with Joby.
By 2028, analysts expect Joby's revenue to reach $434.8 million. At its current market cap, it's valued at 14 times that estimate. But Archer's revenue is expected to reach $511.5 million by 2028 -- and it trades at just eight times that estimate. So while Archer looks more expensive than Joby today, that balance could shift over the next few years as it ramps up its production.
That said, I still think Joby is a better all-around eVTOL stock than Archer for three reasons. First, the S4's single tilt-rotor propellers make it faster and more energy-efficient than the Midnight. Second, Joby's vertically integrated business will generate higher margins than Archer's OEM business. Lastly, it's further ahead of Archer in the FAA certification race.
