How much are we talking?
Mary Barra earned $29.9 million last year, which was a total compensation package worth a modest 1.4% more than the prior year, according to a company filing. The modest increase was largely due to base salary and stock awards being nearly offset by nonequity incentive plan compensation falling 26% down to almost $5 million. Barra's base salary has been consistent at $2.1 million for a few years, and last year her stock awards jumped 11% to $21.6 million, the bulk of the compensation package.
Devin Wenig, chairman of GM's compensation committee, wrote in the SEC filing:
Together, the targets we set for our 2025 compensation program were intended to incentivize management to navigate uncertainty, continue to make great products that our customers love, and drive improved profitability. We believe that these clear and challenging targets rewarded management for delivering results that are fully aligned with our shareholder interests.
The one graph that can justify Barra's pay is a simple one, but it shows the progress GM has made in navigating uncertain trade policy, tariff changes, volatile electric vehicle (EV) demand, and many other speed bumps along the way.
GM has drastically outperformed rivals over the past three years, nearly tripling its closest competitor and trivializing Ford Motor Company's modest gain and/or Stellantis' 50% drop in value. It even greatly outpaced gains at Ferrari, which by many accounts remains one of the top auto investments out there.
Comparison check
Barra's compensation topped that of her closest rival, Ford Motor Company's CEO Jim Farley. Farley's total compensation jumped 11% last year to just over $27.5 million, which was the highest payout he has received since taking over the automaker in October 2020.
It's fair to note that Farley's payout increased at a time Ford reached only 64% of its earnings targets and rather reached the maximum of 200% of quality goals related to newer vehicles (with zero to three months in service).
That could have some investors scratching their heads, as Ford's number of recalls last year set historical records, and quality has been a consistent problem over recent years, even hindering earnings once in a while due to spikes in warranty costs.
For context, Ford obliterated the previous all-time record for the number of recalls, with 153 such campaigns, a record investors would rather leave in the dust. Ford's recalls covered nearly 13 million Ford and Lincoln vehicles, which was drastically larger than Toyota's and Stellantis' 3.2 million and 2.8 million vehicles, respectively. According to Ford, however, the company's internal metrics indicate the automaker is making significant progress on newer vehicles while mounting recalls are from older vehicles in the national fleet.
High-end CEO talent gets paid the big bucks; that much is clear. There are many ways to justify it, but it all comes down to aligning shareholder interests with management. GM has been performing incredibly well in just about any metric and has returned immense value with tens of billions in share buybacks in recent years. Investors might not like the high compensation packages, or perhaps it's a nonfactor, but GM's stock performance speaks for itself on the matter.

If Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) had a corny mascot for dealership commercials, I personally hope it would be a bright green cartoonish F-150 with dollar signs as eyeballs. Because that's exactly what the F-Series trucks are to the Detroit automaker: moneymakers.

90% of profit? Really?
Ford manufactures roughly 20 distinct vehicle models globally, although it seems like more considering regionalization of vehicle designs and premium variations, or performance models. Understanding that those 20-ish models generate millions of sales across the world annually, it's difficult to fathom that the F-150 could generate most of the company's profits.
That's exactly what Morgan Stanley estimated way back in 2012 -- and don't kid yourself, not much has changed in the F-Series' ability to haul in big bucks. In 2012, Morgan Stanley estimated 90% of the company's global profits came from the truck, which is primarily sold only in North America.
That's simply all context to explain just how important the F-Series is for Ford and its investors. Unfortunately, the company is still recovering from a fire at a supplier's plant seven months ago that disrupted production of aluminum for the bodies of F-Series trucks and SUVs. Then a second fire at the same plant in November created a speed bump to recovery.
One example of the real-world impact is found in an Automotive News report about a dealership in Kansas City, Missouri, that is less than 20 miles away from the F-150 plant. The dealership said that March generally kicks off the spring selling season -- an important one for trucks -- with deals and incentives to further drive demand. In a typical year, the dealership would start with roughly 70 of Ford's highly valuable trucks, but this year it has nine.
Not only is that a significant problem, which could cost Ford up to $2 billion in total, but also the delayed recovery is going to be uneven with the auto company making up more lost volume during the second half of 2026. Investors are already seeing the impact, with F-Series sales declining 16% in the U.S. during the first quarter, compared to the prior year. Rivals GM posted Silverado sales as roughly flat, while the Ram truck of Stellantis soared 25% higher.
What it all means
Ford isn't sitting by idly. It's skipping its traditional summer shutdown at four plants assembling multiple variations of the highly profitable truck. It also added a third shift at one of its two F-150 production sites.
Long-term investors have less to worry about -- which is precisely the advantage of being a long-term investor. This is merely a speed bump, and Ford will recover as much of the lost volume as possible by the end of the year, mitigating full-year impact. That said, investors will notice the effect of the dwindling F-150 supply in earnings, because the supplier's plant fire continues to burn Ford, for now.

Why Ford's Most Profitable Vehicle Sales Are on Fire -- and Not in a Good Way

(RTTNews) - Thursday, Stellantis N.V. (STLA) announced a strategic partnership with Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) to advance the company's digital transformation through the co-development of advanced AI, cybersecurity and engineering capabilities.
The collaboration would integrate Stellantis' automotive engineering expertise, multibrand scale and global operations with Microsoft's cloud, AI and security capabilities to accelerate stronger, more agile, more connected digital processes.
As part of the deal, Stellantis and Microsoft will co-develop more than 100 AI initiatives across customer care, product development and operations.
Additionally, the automaker will equip its global workforce with enterprise-grade AI tools to enhance productivity and collaboration.
Currently, STLA is moving down 0.96 percent, to $8.22 on the New York Stock Exchange, and MSFT is trading at $417.13, up 1.46 percent on the Nasdaq.

Stellantis Partners With Microsoft To Advance AI-Led Digital Transformation

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Wednesday closed up +0.80%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) closed down -0.15%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed up +1.40%. June E-mini S&P futures (ESM26) rose +0.79%, and June E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQM26) rose +1.41%.
Stock indexes settled mostly higher on Wednesday, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 posting new all-time highs. Optimism around a potential peace deal in the Middle East is supporting stocks. The AP reported on Wednesday that the US and Iran reached an "in-principle agreement" to extend the ceasefire to allow for more diplomacy. The US and Iran are considering extending their ceasefire, which ends on Tuesday, by another two weeks to allow more time to negotiate a peace agreement. The weakness in industrial stocks on Wednesday, over concerns about US metals tariffs, weighed on the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

The US military began a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, and President Trump threatened to retaliate in the event of Iranian resistance. Iran said it would target all ports in and close to the Persian Gulf if its own shipping hubs are threatened.
Wednesday’s US economic news is mixed for stocks. The Apr Empire manufacturing survey of general business conditions rose +11.2 to a 5-month high of 11.0, stronger than expectations of 0.0. Also, the Mar import price index ex-petroleum rose +0.1% m/m, weaker than expectations of +0.3% m/m. Conversely, the Apr NAHB housing market index fell -4 to a 7-month low of 34, weaker than expectations of 37.
US MBA mortgage applications rose +1.8% in the week ended April 10, with the purchase mortgage sub-index down -1.0% and the refinancing mortgage sub-index up +5.1%. The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage fell -9 bp to 6.42% from 6.51% in the prior week.
Comments on Wednesday from Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack were hawkish and negative for stocks, as she said we're still persistently missing the inflation mandate and that her baseline is the Fed is on hold for a “good while.”
The Fed Beige Book stated that economic activity continued to increase at a slight-to-modest pace with moderate price growth overall, but energy and fuel costs rose "sharply" in all 12 Fed districts in the six weeks to April 6.
WTI crude oil prices (CLK26) were little changed on Wednesday as the US presses on with its naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. On Monday, the US vowed to blockade all vessels passing through the strait that call at Iranian ports or are headed there. The blockade could exacerbate global oil and fuel shortages, as about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transits through the strait. Iran has been able to export crude oil during the war, exporting about 1.7 million bpd in March.
Earnings season began this week, with Q1 S&P 500 earnings projected to climb +12% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Stripping out the technology sector, Q1 earnings are projected to increase around +3%, the weakest in two years.
The markets are discounting a 2% chance for a +25 bp FOMC rate hike at the April 28-29 policy meeting.
Overseas stock markets settled mixed on Wednesday. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed down -0.74%. China's Shanghai Composite rose to a 4-week high and closed up +0.01%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 climbed to a 1.5-month high and closed up +0.44%.

June 10-year T-notes (ZNM6) on Wednesday closed down by -5.5 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield rose +2.8 bp to 4.276%. T-note prices were under pressure on Wednesday as optimism for an extension of the US-Iran ceasefire eased geopolitical risks and sparked a rally in the S&P 500 to a new record high, reducing safe-haven demand for T-notes. T-notes also fell after the Apr Empire manufacturing survey of general business conditions rose more than expected to a 5-month high, and after Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack said the Fed is on hold for a “good while.” In addition, the Fed Beige Book stated that energy and fuel costs rose "sharply" in all 12 Fed districts, a bearish factor for T-notes. Losses in T-notes were limited after the Apr NAHB housing market index fell more than expected to a 7-month low.
European government bond yields moved higher on Wednesday. The 10-year German bund yield rose +2.0 bp to 3.043%. The 10-year UK gilt yield rose +3.4 bp to 4.814%.
Eurozone Feb industrial production rose +0.4% m/m, stronger than expectations of +0.3% m/m.
Swaps are discounting a 21% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on April 30.
US Stock Movers
Software stocks are climbing today, rebounding from their recent selloff. Atlassian (TEAM) closed up more than +10% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100, and Datadog (DDOG) closed up more than +9%. Also, ServiceNow (NOW) closed up more than +7%, and Intuit (INTU) closed up more than +6%. In addition, Workday (WDAY) closed up more than +5%, and Microsoft (MSFT) closed up more than +4% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials. Finally, Oracle (ORCL), Autodesk (ADSK), Adobe (ADBE), and Salesforce (CRM) closed up more than +3%.
Cybersecurity stocks moved higher on Wednesday, led by a +6% increase in Cloudflare (NET) after Piper Sandler upgraded the stock to overweight from neutral with a price target of $222, saying it is an “AI-winner to own.” Also, Zscaler (ZS) closed up more than +6%, and Okta (OKTA) closed up more than +5%. In addition, CrowdStrike Holdings (CRWD) closed up more than +2%, and Palo Alto Networks (PANW) and Fortinet (FTNT) closed up more than +1%.
Industrial stocks retreated on Wednesday over concerns of US metals tariff costs. Carrier Global (CARR) closed down more than -9% to lead losers in the S&P 500. Also, Lennox International (LII) and Stanley Black & Decker (SWK) closed down more than -6%, and Ingersoll Rand (IR) and A O Smith (AOS) closed down more than -5%. In addition, Caterpillar (CAT) closed down more than -3% to lead losers in the Dow Jones Industrials.
Robinhood Markets (HOOD) closed up more than +10% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after the SEC gave the go-ahead for sweeping changes to a restriction on day-trading activity by small investors.
Gitlab (GTLB) closed up more than +8% after announcing a collaboration with Google Cloud to bring agentic DevSecOps to enterprise teams using Vertex AI.
Snap Inc (SNAP) closed up more than +7% after laying off 16% of its global workforce in an attempt to reduce costs and achieve profitability.
Morgan Stanley (MS) closed up more than +4% after reporting a Q1 equities trading revenue of $5.15 billion, better than the consensus of $4.78 billion.
Broadcom (AVGO) closed up more than +3% after expanding its partnership with Meta Platforms to deploy AI infrastructure.
Stellantis NV (STLA) closed up more than +1% after reporting Q1 global shipments rose +12% y/y, led by a surge in North American deliveries.
Live Nation Entertainment (LYV) closed down more than -6% after a NY federal jury found that the company illegally monopolized the live events industry and overcharged fans.

US-Iran Peace Optimism Lifts Stocks

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) today is up +0.10%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) is down -0.21%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) is up +0.15%. June E-mini S&P futures (ESM26) are up +0.16%, and June E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQM26) are up +0.20%.
Stock indexes are mostly higher today, with the S&P 50 posting a 2-month high and the Nasdaq 100 posting a 2.5-month high. Optimism around a potential peace deal in the Middle East is supporting stocks. The AP reported today that the US and Iran reached an "in-principle agreement" to extend the ceasefire to allow for more diplomacy. President Trump on Tuesday said peace talks with Iran could restart “over the next two days,” and extending a ceasefire that expires next week may not be necessary as the war is “close to over.”

The US military began a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, and President Trump threatened to retaliate in the event of Iranian resistance. Iran said it would target all ports in and close to the Persian Gulf if its own shipping hubs are threatened.
Today’s US economic news is supportive of stocks after the Apr Empire manufacturing survey general business conditions rose +11.2 to a 5-month high of 11.0, stronger than expectations of 0.0. Also, the Mar import price index ex-petroleum rose +0.1% m/m, weaker than expectations of +0.3% m/m.
US MBA mortgage applications rose +1.8% in the week ended April 10, with the purchase mortgage sub-index down -1.0% and the refinancing mortgage sub-index up +5.1%. The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage fell -9 bp to 6.42% from 6.51% in the prior week.
Comments today from Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack were hawkish and negative for stocks, as she said we're still persistently missing the inflation mandate and that her baseline is the Fed is on hold for a “good while.”
WTI crude oil prices (CLK26) are up more than +1% today as the US presses on with its naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. On Monday, the US vowed to blockade all vessels passing through the strait that call at Iranian ports or are headed there. The blockade could exacerbate global oil and fuel shortages, as about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transits through the strait. Iran has been able to export crude oil during the war, exporting about 1.7 million bpd in March.
Earnings season began this week, with Q1 S&P 500 earnings projected to climb +12% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Stripping out the technology sector, Q1 earnings are projected to increase around +3%, the weakest in two years.
The markets are discounting a 1% chance for a +25 bp FOMC rate hike at the April 28-29 policy meeting.
Overseas stock markets are mixed today. The Euro Stoxx 50 is down by -0.43%. China's Shanghai Composite rose to a 4-week high and closed up +0.01%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 climbed to a 1.5-month high and closed up +0.44%.
Interest Rates
June 10-year T-notes (ZNM6) today are down by -4 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is up +1.8 bp at 4.266%. T-note prices are under pressure today amid a +1% increase in WTI crude oil prices, which is raising inflation expectations. T-notes remained lower after the Apr Empire manufacturing survey of general business conditions rose more than expected to a 5-month high, and after Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack said the Fed is on hold for a “good while.”
European government bond yields are moving higher today. The 10-year German bund yield is up +1.7 bp to 3.041%. The 10-year UK gilt yield is up +1.6 bp to 4.796%.
Eurozone Feb industrial production rose +0.4% m/m, stronger than expectations of +0.3% m/m.
Swaps are discounting a 23% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on April 30.
US Stock Movers
Software stocks are climbing today, rebounding from their recent selloff. Datadog (DDOG) is up more than +6% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100, and Salesforce (CRM) is up more than +3% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials. Also, ServiceNow (NOW) is up more than +5%, and Atlassian (TEAM), Autodesk (ADSK), Oracle (ORCL), Workday (WDAY), and Intuit (INTU) are up more than +4%. In addition, Adobe (ADBE) is up more than +3%, and Cadence Design Systems (CDNS) is up more than +2%.
Cybersecurity stocks are moving higher today, led by a +4% increase in Cloudflare (NET) after Piper Sandler upgraded the stock to overweight from neutral with a price target of $222, saying it is an “AI-winner to own.” Also, Okta (OKTA) is up more than +3%, and Zscaler (ZS) is up more than +2%. In addition, CrowdStrike Holdings (CRWD) is up more than +1%, Palo Alto Networks (PANW) is up +0.97%, and Fortinet (FTNT) is up +0.60%.
Chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks are under pressure today. ASML Holding NV (ASML) is down more than -5% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100, and Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX) is down more than -4%. Also, KLA Corp (KLAC) and Lam Research (LRCX) are down more than -3%, and Western Digital (WDC), Applied Materials (AMAT), and ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) are down more than -2%.
Robinhood Markets (HOOD) is up more than +7% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after the SEC gave the go-ahead for sweeping changes to a restriction on day-trading activity by small investors.
Snap Inc (SNAP) is up more than +7% after laying off 16% of its global workforce in an attempt to reduce costs and achieve profitability.
Morgan Stanley (MS) is up more than +4% after reporting a Q1 equities trading revenue of $5.15 billion, better than the consensus of $4.78 billion.
Gitlab (GTLB) is up more than +4% after announcing a collaboration with Google Cloud to bring agentic DevSecOps to enterprise teams using Vertex AI.
Broadcom (AVGO) is up more than +3% after expanding its partnership with Meta Platforms to deploy AI infrastructure.

Stocks Supported by US-Iran Peace Optimism

(RTTNews) - Stellantis N.V. (STLA) said on Tuesday that shareholders overwhelmingly approved all resolutions at its Annual General Meeting, including the re-election and appointment of several board members.
John Elkann got re-elected as an executive director, and Robert Peugeot along with Henri de Castries were brought back on as non-executive directors. Juergen Esser is joining the board as a new non-executive director, with all of them set to serve for two years.
The board also made it official that Elkann will continue as Chairman, Peugeot as Vice Chairman, and de Castries as Senior Independent Director. They have set up new committee structures focusing on audit, remuneration, and ESG functions.
STLA is currently trading at $8.16, up $0.17 or 2.19 percent on tthe New York Stock Exchange.

Everyone loves a good comeback story, and that's especially true if you can make a buck or two from it. That's the scenario for investors and Stellantis (NYSE: STLA), which hasn't been a valuable investment over the past five years, as it embarks on a massive global turnaround.

Is it time for investors to jump onboard the turnaround?
No, really, Stellantis shone
Stellantis has struggled mightily in recent years due to a combination of aging product lineups, ineffective inventory management, quality control issues, and high vehicle pricing. Stellantis' strategy of higher pricing sent customers fleeing to rivals for value, which amplified inventory issues and even stirred up a near revolt from dealers as they grappled with significant market share decline.
While Stellantis has immense work left to do with its massive turnaround ambitions, the first quarter brought rare and welcomed news for investors. The lucrative U.S. auto market posted a challenging Q1 result, primarily due to a tough comparison to a strong March and 2025 Q1 when looming U.S. tariffs sent consumers rushing to purchase early. But Stellantis bucked the industry downtrend.
In fact, Q1 deliveries fell at stalwarts General Motors, Toyota Motor, Ford Motor Company, Honda Motor, Nissan Motor, Subaru, and BMW Group. Meanwhile, as most of the industry posted sales declines, Stellantis bucked the trend with Q1 sales rising 4.1%, driven by two of its biggest and most critical brands: Jeep and Ram.
Better yet, while Jeep's 2.8% was a victory during a rough quarter for the industry, Ram shone with a 20% sales gain. Ram pickup trucks posted a 25% gain with the 1500 posting its best Q1 since 2023. The reason this is critical for investors is that the Ram brand is focused on high-margin sales of full-size trucks and commercial vans. While Fiat generates much attention for its high volume, Ram is arguably Stellantis' single most important brand for the bottom line.
What it all means
"There have been plenty of challenges facing the industry this quarter, but these results are proof that we are effectively activating our business reset. They also reflect the confidence we have in our product lineup and dealer network," said Jeff Kommor, head of U.S. retail sales for Stellantis, in a statement.
Although Stellantis' early turnaround hasn't generated much buzz or gained much attention, it has quietly notched three consecutive quarterly sales gains. That's a big shifting of gears from the prior seven consecutive annual sales declines.
It's important for investors to see the big picture here. The global automotive industry is going through massive changes. The production of driverless vehicles and software-defined vehicles is accelerating along with shifting dynamics, including a wave of highly competitive and affordable Chinese brands expanding globally.
Stellantis faces a mountain of internal issues to solve and external problems to navigate, but a decade from now we may look back at this moment as the time the automaker began rebounding from rock bottom.
