The restriction limited the bank’s ability to expand its balance sheet, constraining loan growth, deposit accumulation and overall business expansion.
Over the years, Wells Fargo invested heavily in strengthening internal controls, enhancing board oversight and addressing compliance deficiencies across its operations. The bank gradually resolved multiple regulatory orders, demonstrating steady progress in governance and risk oversight.
In June 2025, the Fed lifted the asset cap after confirming that Wells Fargo had met the conditions required under the 2018 enforcement action. The termination of the 2018 order last week marks the closure of the final remaining consent order linked to the fake-account scandal, ending nearly a decade of regulatory oversight.
The key question now is whether this regulatory relief can translate into sustainable long-term growth.
WFC: A Strategic Reset Post Regulatory Relief
The removal of the asset cap significantly expands Wells Fargo’s strategic flexibility. The bank can now grow its loan book, deposits and securities portfolio without regulatory constraints. This will lead to an increase in NII. By 2025-end, WFC’s loans increased nearly 7%, while deposits rose 6.4% since June 2025.
Equally important, Wells Fargo can now accelerate expansion in fee-generating businesses, including payment services, asset management and mortgage origination. WFC increased trading-related assets by 50% in 2025 as it is able to now utilize its balance sheet to accelerate growth in trading businesses. Additionally, the bank is strengthening its credit card portfolio, reflecting improved customer penetration and diversified fee income streams. These efforts will enhance the company’s profitability.
Operational efficiency initiatives also reinforce its growth prospects. Since 2020, Wells Fargo has streamlined its organizational structure, reduced headcount and optimized its branch network. Non-interest expenses have declined slightly over the past five years, reflecting disciplined cost management.
Reflecting this renewed flexibility and operational efficiency, management expects to achieve the medium-term return on tangible common equity (ROTCE) target of 17-18%. Achieving this level would signal stronger capital efficiency and improved profitability, suggesting that the bank’s restructuring efforts are beginning to unlock operational potential.
Other Banks’ Progress to Fix Regulatory Issues
In December 2025, Citigroup, Inc. C received notable regulatory relief after the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency removed the July 2024 amendment to the bank’s 2020 consent order. This original consent order was focused on longstanding deficiencies in risk management, data governance, internal controls and compliance. With regulatory easing, Citigroup is better-positioned to accelerate its growth and efficiency initiatives.
In September 2025, UBS Group AG UBS agreed to settle a long-running French tax case concerning its cross-border business activities between 2004 and 2012. The Federal Reserve has officially terminated its 2018 enforcement action against Wells Fargo & Company WFC, marking the closure of one of the most significant regulatory penalties imposed on the bank in the aftermath of its fake-account scandal.
The central bank confirmed that WFC has fulfilled all requirements under the order, including strengthening its governance and firmwide risk management. This milestone comes after years of regulatory oversight addressing deficiencies from the 2016 sales-practice scandal.
History of WFC’s 2018 Consent Order by the Fed
The regulatory scrutiny on Wells Fargo began in 2016, when investigations revealed that employees had opened millions of unauthorized deposit and credit card accounts in customers’ names without consent. The misconduct stemmed from a high-pressure sales culture that prioritized cross-selling targets over proper risk management.
In response, multiple U.S. regulators launched investigations into the bank’s governance and risk controls. By 2018, the Fed imposed a formal enforcement action, requiring Wells Fargo to overhaul its governance structure and establish a comprehensive risk management framework across all major business operations. The Fed also mandated that the bank demonstrate the effectiveness of these improvements through two independent third-party reviews.
Alongside these requirements, the 2018 consent order introduced a strict asset growth cap, restricting Wells Fargo from growing any larger than its total assets as of the end of 2017, which amounted to $1.95 trillion. The cap effectively constrained the bank’s ability to expand deposits, lending and securities holdings until regulators were satisfied that governance and risk-management improvements were fully implemented.

In December 2025, Citigroup, Inc. C has received notable regulatory relief after the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency removed the July 2024 amendment to the bank’s 2020 consent order. This original consent order was focused on longstanding deficiencies in risk management, data governance, internal controls and compliance.
The 2024 amendment required Citigroup to submit a formal resource review process to prove it had enough staffing, systems and governance in place to fix long-standing control issues. The regulatory easing aligns with C’s broader strategy to modernize its technology and control data.
In September 2025, UBS Group AG UBS agreed to pay €835 million ($986.8 million) to resolve a long-running French tax case concerning its cross-border business activities between 2004 and 2012.
Apart from the French tax case, UBS has also settled other regulatory matters in recent years. In August 2025, it agreed to pay $300 million to the U.S. Department of Justice to settle a legacy matter tied to Credit Suisse’s mortgage-backed securities business.

UBS Group Breaks Below 200-Day Moving Average - Notable for UBS

JPMorgan Chase’s JPM European arm, J.P. Morgan SE, has been fined €12.18 million ($14.32 million) by the European Central Bank (ECB) for incorrectly reporting its capital requirements. The action follows findings that the bank miscalculated its risk-weighted assets (RWAs), a key metric used to determine how much capital lenders must hold against potential losses.
The decision, announced yesterday, centers on reporting discrepancies that stretched across several years and affected the regulator’s assessment of the bank’s risk exposure.
JPMorgan’s Capital Errors Per ECB
According to the ECB, between 2019 and 2024, JPMorgan reported lower RWAs than required under regulatory standards. For 15 consecutive quarters, corporate exposures were misclassified, leading to the application of reduced credit risk weights that did not align with banking rules.
When RWAs are understated, capital ratios, which signal a bank’s ability to absorb losses, appear stronger than they actually are.
In addition, for 21 straight quarters, the lender excluded certain transactions when calculating RWAs tied to credit valuation adjustment (CVA) risks. CVA risks reflect the possibility that a counterparty in a derivatives contract may default. By omitting these transactions, the reported risk exposure did not fully capture the underlying obligations.
The ECB concluded that the inaccurate figures prevented supervisors from obtaining a complete and accurate view of the bank’s risk profile. It further stated that the breaches were committed with serious negligence, citing clear shortcomings in internal processes and controls that failed to detect the errors in a timely manner. The credit risk breach was categorized as “severe,” while the CVA-related breach was deemed “moderately severe.”
JPMorgan’s Response?
JPM acknowledged the penalty and said that the matter was fully addressed. A spokesperson stated that the issues were proactively identified and self-reported, and have since been remediated.
The regulator has noted that the decision may be challenged before the court of justice of the European Union.
JPMorgan has emphasized that it has consistently maintained strong capital buffers and that its prudent capitalization approach remains unchanged.
Thus, while the financial penalty is modest relative to the bank’s scale, the case underscores the importance regulators place on accurate risk reporting and robust internal controls within Europe’s banking system.

Other Finance Firms Facing Legal Troubles
In November 2025, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (“FDIC”) filed a lawsuit against Capital One COF, alleging that the bank paid about $100 million less than it should have to help bail out depositors of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank, when both collapsed in 2023.
The FDIC took control of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank in March 2023, and estimated in June 2024 that it would recover $18.6 billion from 111 banks through special assessments. Banks with less than $5 billion in assets were exempted from these charges.
In sync with this, Capital One estimated in July 2025 that it might have to reserve an additional $200 million. The main concern of the dispute was whether Capital One understated its level of uninsured deposits by excluding a $56-billion position between two subsidiaries from regulatory filings that describe its financial condition.
In September, UBS Group AG UBS agreed to pay €835 million ($986.8 million) to resolve a long-running French tax case concerning its cross-border business activities between 2004 and 2012.
UBS Group agreed to pay a €730-million ($862.7 million) fine and €105 million ($124.1 million) in civil damages to the French state. The company stated that the matter is fully provisioned and its resolution is consistent with its strategy of addressing legacy issues in the best interests of all stakeholders.

JPMorgan's EU Arm Fined EURO 12.18M by ECB for Capital Errors

Retail investors are playing an increasingly larger role on Wall Street.

Roughly three decades ago, the advent and proliferation of the internet changed the business landscape forever. But just as important, the internet broke down information barriers that had existed between Wall Street and Main Street for more than a century. In other words, this breakthrough technology gave rise to the retail investor revolution.
Retail investors are playing a larger role in total equities trading volume over time. They've also latched onto some of Wall Street's highest-flying stocks, including artificial intelligence (AI) data-mining specialist Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR) and satellite-based cellular broadband services provider AST SpaceMobile (NASDAQ: ASTS).

Although both of these beloved stocks have delivered outsize returns over the trailing three years -- Palantir and AST SpaceMobile have soared 1,630% and 1,280%, respectively, as of Feb. 13, 2026 -- not everyone on Wall Street shares the same vision as retail investors. According to select Wall Street analysts, this dynamic duo could plunge as much as 62% in 2026.
Palantir Technologies: Implied downside of 62%
Palantir didn't add roughly $300 billion in market cap since the beginning of 2023 by accident. It's the result of consistently blowing past the consensus sales expectations of analysts and investors recognizing the company offers a sustainable moat.
Its core operating platforms, Gotham and Foundry, have no large-scale competitors. The U.S. government and its allies use Gotham to plan and oversee military missions, as well as to collect and analyze data to protect against attacks and conduct criminal investigations. Meanwhile, Foundry is a subscription service designed to help businesses streamline their operations by better understanding their data. Both of these software-as-a-service platforms are AI- and machine-learning-driven.
While companies with sustainable moats typically command a valuation premium, there's only so far this premium can be stretched.
According to RBC Capital Markets analyst Rishi Jaluria, Palantir stock can head to $50 per share. This would equate to 62% downside from where shares ended on Feb. 13.
Jaluria, a longtime Palantir bear, continues to question why investors are paying such an outsize premium for the stock. History tells us that megacap companies at the forefront of next-big-thing trends have consistently topped out at price-to-sales (P/S) ratios ranging from 30 to 45 over the last three decades. Palantir headed into its latest earnings report with a P/S ratio in the low triple digits. No earnings beat or revenue guide increase would have been sufficient to justify such a premium.
Jaluria has also been particularly critical of Palantir's newer segment, Foundry. Jaluria has opined that the customization required of Foundry to satisfy new clients will make scaling this segment extremely challenging.
Lastly, Palantir would be exposed if history repeats and an AI bubble forms and subsequently bursts. Every game-changing innovation over the last three decades has eventually navigated a bubble-bursting event. Although AI adoption hasn't been a problem, as evidenced by enterprise spending on AI infrastructure, we still look to be years away from this technology optimizing sales and profits for businesses investing in it.
AST SpaceMobile: Implied downside of 48%
The other high-flying stock retail investors love that may get absolutely walloped in 2026 is AST SpaceMobile.
Similar to Palantir, AST SpaceMobile shares have skyrocketed on the belief that it possesses a sustainable first-mover advantage/competitive moat. While other companies have previously attempted to launch satellite-based cellular broadband services, these prior efforts required expensive handsets compatible with satellite technology. AST's BlueBird satellites can work with existing smartphones to provide global 4G and 5G cellular broadband service.
The other differentiating factor for AST SpaceMobile is that it's partnering with, rather than competing against, the world's largest wireless operators. Whereas companies that had previously launched satellite networks were competing against traditional wireless carriers, AST has partnered with more than 50 mobile network operators that collectively serve nearly 6 billion combined subscribers worldwide.
Despite this distinction and the potential for truly parabolic sales growth for the foreseeable future, one Wall Street analyst believes AST SpaceMobile will lose close to half of its value. UBS analyst Christopher Schoell has a price target of just $43 on AST, implying downside potential of 48% based on the company's Feb. 13 closing price.
The catalyst behind Schoell's Street-low price target was the $19 billion acquisition of EchoStar's S-Band spectrum by SpaceX-owned Starlink. Schoell believes this deal strengthens Starlink's foundation and will increase competitive pressure on AST.
However, this isn't the only potential problem for AST SpaceMobile. Its lightning-fast growth rate is dependent on the company launching new satellites in a timely and cost-effective manner. It's unlikely that this ramp-up in production will occur without a hitch. Any production snafus or inflationary pressures could hit AST stock hard.
The final concern has to do with AST SpaceMobile's valuation. Even with a parabolic sales growth forecast, AST is valued at 10 times forecast revenue in 2029. It would appear that AST has been priced for perfection in an imperfect industry.

Collectively, S&P 500 companies reported an acceleration in revenue and earnings growth in 2025, and Wall Street anticipates another acceleration in 2026, driven by solid economic growth (supported by tax cuts and artificial intelligence spending) and one or two interest rate cuts from the Federal Reserve.
In turn, most analysts expect double-digit gains in the S&P 500 in the remaining months of the year. The 20 Wall Street research organizations and investment banks listed above expect the S&P 500 to move higher in the remaining months of 2026, with projected returns ranging from roughly 2% to 17%. But the median forecast says the index will advance about 10%.
However, Wall Street has historically done a poor job forecasting where the S&P 500 will close in a given year, not because analysts are incompetent, but rather because predicting the future is impossible. In the last four years, the median year-end estimate for the S&P 500 was incorrect by an average of 16 percentage points.
Why Wall Street might be wrong about the S&P 500 in 2026
The S&P 500 currently trades at 22 times forward earnings, a valuation it has more or less maintained for the last 18 months. That is a meaningful premium to the 10-year average of 18.8 times forward earnings.
Previously, the S&P 500 has only sustained such an expensive valuation during two periods in history: the dot-com bubble in the late 1990s/early 2000s and the Covid-19 pandemic in the early 2020s. In both cases, the index ultimately dropped into a bear market.
The odds of a bear market in 2026 are arguably elevated because President Trump's tariffs are a source of economic uncertainty even in the best case scenario. Businesses have already cut back on hiring, and policy uncertainty will likely intensify as midterm elections approach. And uncertainty makes investors nervous.
Since 1950, the S&P 500 has return an average of just 4.6% in midterm election years, according to Carson Investment Research. More concerning, the S&P 500 has suffered an average intra-year drawdown of 17% during midterm election years. In other words, history says the index is likely to fall 17% at some point in 2026.
Importantly, investors should not interpret anything I've said as a reason to exit the stock market today. Past performance is never a guarantee of future results. But the current market environment warrants caution. Limit stock purchases to your highest-conviction ideas, and never buy stocks you aren't willing to hold through a steep drawdown.

Will the Stock Market Crash Under President Donald Trump in 2026? Wall Street Has a Surprising Answer for Investors.

UBS Group AG UBS plans to hire up to 3,000 employees in India in the coming months, according to a Reuters article, which was published in Yahoo Finance. The expansion comes as the Swiss banking giant continues to reduce headcount in Switzerland as part of its ongoing integration of Credit Suisse, which it acquired in a state-backed transaction in 2023.
As part of the integration process, UBS has previously announced plans to cut around 3,000 jobs in Switzerland, with most of the reductions expected to take place later in 2026. The workforce adjustments are likely to be achieved primarily through natural attrition and early retirement measures, aimed at limiting social impact.
Although the number of roles planned in India broadly mirrors the scale of job reductions expected in Switzerland, UBS has not confirmed whether the two developments are directly connected.
As of Dec. 31, 2025, the company reported a total workforce of 119,589 employees. In the fourth quarter of 2025, the bank reduced headcount by 2,793 positions sequentially and by 9,394 roles year over year, reflecting continued progress in eliminating overlapping positions following the merger.
Why UBS Is Expanding Its Operations in India
The company already operates several offices across India and is now opening an additional site in Hyderabad. The bank plans to add between 2,000 and 3,000 roles at the new location over the coming months, effectively doubling its workforce in the city. The recent hiring drive is aimed at strengthening UBS’ technology and operations capabilities.
In recent years, India has become a key hub for global financial firms seeking access to deep technology talent pools and cost-efficient, scalable operating models, particularly as institutions accelerate digital transformation and automation efforts. As such, other major financial firms like BlackRock Inc. BLK and Citigroup Inc. C are pursuing similar strategies.
According to a GlobalData report published on Yahoo Finance, BlackRock plans to add around 1,200 jobs in India to strengthen its artificial intelligence and data analytics capabilities. The hiring is expected to expand the BLK’s iHubs in Mumbai and Gurugram, increasing engineering and data expertise to supportinvestment research risk management and analytics functions.
Earlier, in September 2025, Citigroup planned to reallocate 1,000 technology jobs to its Indian business support centers following staff reductions in China, according to a Bloomberg article published on MSN. The move highlights the growing importance of India-based global capability centers as these firms streamline operations and respond to regulatory and cost pressures across markets.
UBS Progresses With Credit Suisse Integration Plan
As UBS advances the integration of Credit Suisse, the bank continues to make steady progress across client migrations and operational consolidation. In the fourth quarter of 2025, around 85% of Swiss-booked client accounts had been migrated, while the transition of Personal & Corporate Banking clients was largely completed. The remaining Swiss booking center migrations are expected to be finalized by the end of the first quarter of 2026, keeping UBS on track to substantially complete the integration by year-end.
These operational milestones are increasingly translating into measurable cost efficiencies. During the fourth quarter, UBS delivered an additional $0.7 billion in gross cost savings, taking cumulative gross savings to $10.7 billion at the end of 2025. Reflecting this progress, the bank raised its targeted annualized exit-rate savings to approximately $13.5 billion by the end of 2026, up from the earlier $13 billion goal. Integration-related expenses are expected to total around $15 billion by 2026-end.

UBS Group to Add 3,000 Jobs in India Amid Credit Suisse Integration

The DividendRank formula at Dividend Channel ranks a coverage universe of thousands of dividend stocks, according to a proprietary formula designed to identify those stocks that combine two important characteristics — strong fundamentals and a valuation that looks inexpensive. UBS Group AG (Symbol: UBS) presently has an above average rank, in the top 50% of the coverage universe, which suggests it is among the top most "interesting" ideas that merit further research by investors.
But making UBS Group AG an even more interesting and timely stock to look at, is the fact that in trading on Wednesday, shares of UBS entered into oversold territory, changing hands as low as $41.82 per share. UBS Group Becomes Oversold

In a time when artificial intelligence stocks and valuations are being called into question, shareholders of Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA), the AI chip king, are looking for good news, especially as the company's upcoming earnings report on Feb. 25 approaches. While Nvidia stock has been an incredibly strong performer, it's roughly flat this year and only up about 4.3% over the past six months.
Taiwan Semiconductor (NYSE: TSM) may have just provided the spark Nvidia shareholders were looking for. The massive chip manufacturer just announced that its January sales rose nearly 37% year over year. That number is above the company's historical average and pushed the stock to all-time record levels.

Why is this good for Nvidia?
Because Taiwan Semiconductor is the primary manufacturer of Nvidia chips, so strong sales by the company could be indicative of strong demand for Nvidia's chips. Now, keep in mind that Taiwan Semiconductor manufactures chips for other companies, including Advanced Micro Devices, Broadcom, and Qualcomm, but strong chip demand should bode well for Nvidia, given its dominance in the market.
Shareholders should be encouraged. Here's why.
Other positive news out of Taiwan
The positive update from Taiwan Semiconductor is the latest in a string of positive indicators. Analysts at UBS recently noted that Taiwan's Ministry of Finance released January export data, which showed that automatic data-processing (ADP) equipment excluding laptops increased by 8% from December. Normally, January data has shown a declined from December.
Additionally, Taiwan's ADP exports in the fourth fiscal quarter grew 25% from the third quarter. Meanwhile, UBS is only projecting 18% quarterly growth in Nvidia's all-important data center division, which provides infrastructure to power AI workloads.
Now, this doesn't guarantee that Nvidia will have a blowout quarter, and one can never predict what the market will hone in on when Nvidia reports earnings or how it will react. Still, this piece of macro data is positive for Nvidia and could position the company for strong quarterly results, which may get the stock going again.
Now, Nvidia's stock is still up nearly 42% in the past year and over 1,167% in the past five years. But the valuation has also come down significantly, with the stock trading at less than 25 times forward earnings, well below its five-year historical average of close to 35 times forward earnings.
While practically no one can predict near-term catalysts that will drive stock prices, this presents a favorable setup heading into Nvidia's fiscal 2026 fourth-quarter earnings report, and also likely not a bad time for long-term investors to consider buying as well.

Shares of AppLovin (NASDAQ: APP) were moving higher today as the fast-growing adtech company continued to bounce back after last week's sell-off ahead of its fourth-quarter earnings report tomorrow.
Yesterday, the stock jumped after a short-seller, CapitalWatch, retracted its accusation last month that the company was laundering money, and today it got a bullish note from Wall Street.

As of 11:01 a.m. ET, the stock was up 2.7% on the news.
AppLovin sentiment reverses
The biggest piece of news out on AppLovin was that UBS lowered its price target on the stock from $840 to $686, reflecting the stock's recent pullback, but maintained a buy rating on the stock.
In the note, UBS said that AppLovin benefited from strong return on ad spend (ROAS) from its AI engine, Axon 2.0, as well as growing e-commerce spend and increasing advertiser adoption.
That came out one day after Jefferies reiterated a buy rating and a price target of $860 on the stock, saying that many of the recent concerns that have driven the stock lower were overblown.
What to expect from AppLovin's earnings report
Expectations seem to be improving heading into AppLovin's fourth-quarter report, and digital advertising giants Alphabet and Meta Platforms reported strong results for their fourth quarters, showing robust advertising demand.
Analysts expect the company to report $1.61 billion in revenue, up 48.1% from the quarter a year ago, and for adjusted earnings per share to increase from $2.07 to $3.07.
Other analysts have also reported strong growth in Axon adoption, so the signs are there for a post-earnings pop in AppLovin. We'll get the full story tomorrow afternoon when the adtech company reports earnings.
