What Has ExxonMobil (XOM) Stock Done For Investors?

Chevron Corporation’s (CVX) projected free cash flow expansion of roughly $12.5 billion by 2026 is tied to a coordinated ramp of major upstream assets and a streamlined organizational model. The company expects material uplift as the Tengiz Future Growth Project reaches full production, Gulf of America developments scale, Permian volumes surpass 1 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, and the recently completed Hess integration contributes incremental cash generation.
A strengthening base of high-margin assets underpins this outlook. Reliability at cornerstone operations such as Gorgon and Wheatstone remains among the best in the industry, supporting stable free cash flow from Australia LNG. The Permian Basin continues to grow its value through improved efficiency and long-lasting reserves. Additionally, Chevron aims for structural cost reductions of $3-$4 billion by 2026, which will further increase its cash margins across all operations. Chevron's oil and gas fields maintain industry-leading profit margins and produce less carbon compared to many rivals, ensuring its high-value barrels remain resilient.
Comparable peers, such as ExxonMobil (XOM) and BP plc (BP), continue to invest in long-cycle projects, but Chevron’s mix of short-cycle shale, LNG optionality, and global deepwater leverage positions it distinctively for mid-cycle resilience. This competitive backdrop is evolving as ExxonMobil and BP both scale their own deepwater and LNG portfolios. Yet, Chevron’s integrated cost structure and capital discipline allow it to maintain a differentiated advantage under a wide range of price scenarios.
Chevron’s strong cash flow trajectory is further locked in by disciplined spending. The American multinational has capped its annual capital expenditures at $18-21 billion through 2030, improving reinvestment efficiency and enabling sustained free cash flow enough to cover its dividends and capital needs even if Brent oil prices fall below $50 per barrel. Financial estimates show that a $1 move in Brent oil price changes Chevron’s after-tax earnings by roughly $550 million, while even a $10 swing in Brent shifts production by only about 10,000 barrels per day. This limited sensitivity shows that Chevron’s risk exposure is well managed, which in turn supports confidence in the company’s ability to meet its cash-flow targets for 2026.

Chevron's Cash Flow to Surge in 2026: What's Driving the Growth

Exxon Mobil Corporation XOM is among the largest integrated energy companies, but generates the majority of its earnings from upstream operations. The energy giant has a strong presence in the Permian, the most prolific oil and gas resource in the United States, and offshore Guyana. Thus, XOM’s upstream business outlook seems bright.
On the third-quarterearnings call ExxonMobil stated that it has generated another record production of 1.7 million oil-equivalent barrels per day. Following its strategic push on broadening its presence in advantageous assets, XOM mentioned its acquisition of more than 80,000 premium acres in the Midland, a sub-basin of the broader Permian, from Sinochem Petroleum.
ExxonMobil also highlighted that it has achieved record production of more than 700,000 barrels per day from Guyana. Notably, ongoing operations in advantageous assets like Permian and Guyana seem profitable since breakeven costs are low. Therefore, XOM can manage the business environment even when oil prices fall.
FANG & COP Also Have Footprint in the Permian
Diamondback Energy Inc. FANG and ConocoPhillips COP also have a strong presence in the Permian. FANG is a Permian pure-play player with sufficient drilling inventory to sustain its production for more than 10 years.
ConocoPhillips’ assets in the Lower 48 comprise resources in the prolific Delaware and Midland basins. The Delaware Basin contributes considerably to COP’s Lower 48 production. Thus, both FANG and COP can sail through low oil prices.
XOM’s Price Performance, Valuation & Estimates
Shares of XOM have gained 10.7% over the past year compared with the 9% improvement of the composite stocks belonging to the industry.

It turns out that the oil company was actually being a bit conservative. ExxonMobil has recently revised its 2030 plan, positioning it to produce even higher earnings and cash flow. Here's a look at its updated plan and what's fueling its optimism.

Drilling down into Exxon's updated plan to 2030
ExxonMobil has been working to transform into a company that can fully capitalize on its unique competitive advantages. Its combination of scale, world-class resources, and expertise gave it the building blocks to deliver industry-leading results. The company has focused on leveraging its scale to reduce costs while also investing heavily in its best assets. This strategy is paying big dividends by driving a significant improvement in its profitability. For example, it delivered the highest earnings per share during the third quarter compared to other periods in a similar oil-price environment.
The oil giant expects to grow even more profitable over the coming years. It's raising its 2030 outlook to $25 billion in additional earnings and $35 billion in incremental cash flow compared to last year's level at constant commodity prices and margins. That's a $5 billion increase for both metrics. It puts Exxon on pace to grow its earnings by an average of 13% per year, while delivering double-digit annual cash flow growth. Meanwhile, earnings would grow faster on a per-share basis due to its share repurchase program, which is steadily reducing its outstanding shares.
ExxonMobil can deliver this meaningful increase without raising its capital spending, which will remain within its original annual target range of $28 billion to $33 billion from 2026 through 2030. As a result, Exxon will produce a massive amount of surplus cash over the coming years. At $65 a barrel, it can produce a cumulative $145 billion in excess cash. That will enable it to continue increasing its dividend, which it has done for 43 consecutive years, a level that fewer than 5% of companies in the S&P 500 have achieved. Additionally, the company plans to repurchase a meaningful amount of its shares each year, including targeting $20 billion in 2026.
What's fueling the improved profitability?
A couple of catalysts are driving Exxon's more optimistic outlook for 2030. The company expects to deliver more than $14 billion of earnings growth from its upstream production business by 2030 at constant prices compared to last year, a $5 billion increase from its prior outlook. The primary driver is stronger growth from its industry-leading position in the Permian Basin. The company is benefiting from proprietary technologies, the continued integration of its Pioneer acquisition, and its scale advantages, which are helping drive additional structural cost savings. Exxon is on track to double its production in the Permian by 2030 from last year's level to 2.5 million barrels of oil equivalent (BOE) per day, a 200,000 BOE per day increase from its prior plan.
Included in its revised upstream earnings forecast is the expectation that the company will capture an additional $2 billion of structural cost savings over the next several years. As a result, Exxon now expects to deliver $20 billion of cumulative cost savings from its 2019 baseline. The oil giant's strategy of simplifying business processes, optimizing supply chains, and modernizing its technology continues to pay off.
Meanwhile, Exxon is maintaining its outlook for its product solutions and lower-carbon energy solutions businesses, where it continues to expect healthy profit growth over the next few years. It's investing in several large-scale projects across these businesses, including those aimed at expanding its production of higher-value fuels, performance chemicals, and lubricants. Additionally, Exxon is investing in new businesses, such as those that support the production of high-value products, including Proxxima (a new high-performance thermoset resin technology) and carbon materials. The company is also building the world's first large-scale, end-to-end carbon capture and storage system along the U.S. Gulf Coast. These and other projects will contribute significantly to its earnings growth over the next few years.

ExxonMobil has transformed itself into the industry leader in profitability. It expects to be even more profitable by 2030, driven by its large-scale operations, especially in the Permian Basin. That positions the oil company to create even more value for shareholders in the coming years, making it a top oil stock to buy and hold for the long haul.

ExxonMobil Now Expects to Make Even More Money By 2030 (Without Any Help From Oil Prices)

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Tuesday closed down by -0.09%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) (DIA) closed down by -0.38%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed up by +0.16%. December E-mini S&P futures (ESZ25) fell -0.12%, and December E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQZ25) rose +0.10%.
Stock indexes gave up early gains and settled mixed on Tuesday as bond yields climbed after the Oct JOLTS report showed job openings unexpectedly rose to a 5-month high. The market remains cautious about the pace of Fed easing beyond Wednesday’s decision, when the Fed is expected to cut interest rates by 25 bp. The 10-year T-note yield rose +2 bp to 4.18%.

US Oct JOLTS job openings unexpectedly rose by +12,000 to a 5-month high of 7.670 million, showing a stronger labor market than expectations of a decline to 7.117 million.
US Sep leading indicators fell -0.3% m/m, right on expectations.
The markets this week will focus on government reports and the FOMC meeting. On Wednesday, the Q3 employment cost index is expected to climb by +0.9%. The results of the Tue/Wed FOMC meeting are expected to show a -25 bp cut in the federal funds target range to 3.50%-3.75%. The markets will also look at the Fed's summary of economic projections and its dot-plot interest rate forecast. In addition, post-meeting comments from Fed Chair Powell on Wednesday about the future direction of interest rates could move the markets. On Thursday, weekly initial unemployment claims are expected to increase by +29,000 to 220,000.
The markets are discounting a 90% chance of another -25 bp rate cut at the conclusion of the 2-day FOMC meeting on Wednesday.
Q3 corporate earnings season is drawing to a close as 495 of the 500 S&P companies have released results. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, 83% of reporting S&P 500 companies exceeded forecasts, on course for the best quarter since 2021. Q3 earnings rose +14.6%, more than doubling expectations of +7.2% y/y.
Overseas stock markets settled mixed on Tuesday. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell from a 3.5-week high and closed down -0.13%. China’s Shanghai Composite closed down -0.37%. Japan’s Nikkei Stock 225 closed up +0.14%.
Interest Rates
March 10-year T-notes (ZNH6) on Tuesday closed down -5 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield rose +1.8 bp to 4.182%. Mar T-note futures gave up an early advance and turned lower on Tuesday after the Oct JOLTS report showed job openings unexpectedly rose to a 5-month high, a hawkish factor for Fed policy. Also, supply pressures weighed on T-notes as the Treasury auctioned $39 billion of 10-year T-notes. However, losses in T-notes were limited due to solid demand for the $39 billion 10-year T-note auction, which had a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.55, above the 10-auction average of 2.54.
European government bond yields finished lower on Tuesday. The 10-year German bund yield fell from an 8.5-month high of 2.879% and finished down by -1.2 bp to 2.850%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell by -2.3 bp to 4.505%.
German trade news was weaker than expected after German Oct exports rose +0.1% m/m, slightly weaker than expectations of +0.2% m/m. Also, Oct imports fell -1.2% m/m, weaker than expectations of -0.5% m/m.
Swaps are discounting a 1% chance for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on December 18.
US Stock Movers
Toll Brothers (TOL) closed down more than -2% to lead homebuilders lower after forecasting 2026 deliveries of 10,300 to 10,700, below the consensus of 10,843. Also, Lennar (LEN) closed down more than -2%, and D R Horton (DHI) and PulteGroup (PHM) closed down more than -1%.
Cryptocurrency-exposed stocks moved higher on Tuesday as Bitcoin (^BTCUSD) rose more than +1%. Galaxy Digital Holdings (GLXY) closed up more than +12% after Citizens Jmp Securities LLC initiated coverage of the stock with an outperform recommendation and a $60 price target. Also, Riot Platforms (RIOT) closed up more than +3%. In addition, Strategy (MSTR) closed up more than +2%, and MARA Holdings (MARA) and Coinbase Global (COIN) closed up more than +1%.
Silver mining stocks rose sharply on Tuesday after the price of COMEX silver soared to a new all-time high. Hecla Mining (HL) closed up more than +7% and Newmont (NEM) closed up more than +5% to lead gainers in the S&P 500. Also, Coeur Mining (CDE) closed up more than +5%.
SLM Corp (SLM) closed down more than -14% after Compass Point Research & Trading LLC double-downgraded the stock to sell from buy with a price target of $23.
Graphic Packaging Holding (GPK) closed down more than -8% after forecasting full-year net sales of $8.4 billion to $8.6 billion, the midpoint below the consensus of $8.56 billion.
AutoZone (AZO) closed down more than -7% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q1 comparable sales rose +5.50%, weaker than the consensus of +5.93%. O’Reilly Automotive (ORLY) closed down more than -3% on the news to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100.
Caleres (CAL) closed down more than -5% after reporting Q3 adjusted EPS of 38 cents, well below the consensus of 85 cents.
JPMorgan Chase (JPM) closed down more than -4% to lead losers in the Dow Jones Industrials after CEO Lake said the bank anticipates spending $105 billion next year, higher than the consensus of $101.1 billion, driven by “volume- and growth-related expenses.”
Ollie’s Bargain Outlet Holdings (OLLI) closed down more than -3% after reporting Q3 comparable sales rose +3.30%, weaker than the consensus of +3.74%.
Ares Management (ARES) closed up more than +7% after S&P Dow Jones Indices said the company will replace Kellanova in the S&P 500 before trading begins on Thursday, December 11.
KeyCorp (KEY) closed up more than +3% after CEO Gorman said the bank agreed with activist investor HoldCo Asset Management that the stock is undervalued and has excess capital.
CVS Health (CVS) closed up more than +2% after raising guidance on its full-year adjusted EPS forecast to $6.60-$6.70 from a previous forecast of $6.55-$6.65, the midpoint stronger than the consensus of $6.63.
Core & Main Inc (CNM) closed up more than +2% after reporting Q3 net sales of $2.06 billion, better than the consensus of $2.05 billion.
Exxon Mobil (XOM) closed up more than +2% after it said it expects $35 billion in cash flow growth by 2030, an increase of about 17% from what it was projecting a year ago.
Viking Holdings Ltd (VIK) closed up more than +1% after Goldman Sachs upgraded the stock to buy from neutral with a price target of $78.
Otis Worldwide (OTIS) closed up more than +1% after BNP Paribas Exane upgraded the stock to outperform from neutral with a price target of $105.

Stocks Settle Mixed Ahead of Wednesday’s FOMC Decision

Shares of ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM) rallied on Tuesday, up as much as 4.2% before pulling back to a 2.9% increase as of 12:35 p.m. EDT.
Exxon updated its long-term 2030 earnings and cash flow targets today, increasing them above the prior guidance and above analysts' expectations. Thus, it's no wonder to see the stock surging higher to nearly hit a 52-week high.

$25 billion in earnings growth by 2030
Today, Exxon issued a press release, informing investors it was raising its 2030 earnings and cash flow targets.
Exxon now anticipates an additional $25 billion in earnings growth by 2030, representing a 13% compound annualized earnings growth rate, as well as an additional $35 billion in cash flow growth over the same period. Moreover, Exxon expects to achieve that growth efficiently, with no extra capital employed, as it now anticipates a strong return on invested capital of 17%.
Keep in mind, Exxon is still assuming the same $65 per barrel of oil for the new projections. The projected improvements are all due to Exxon's proprietary technology, which the company claims will enable it to extract more barrels at a lower cost, with more production to come from the key Permian Basin and in Guyana oil and gas fields, which Exxon defines as competitively advantaged assets. Moreover, Exxon anticipates a doubling of cost synergies from the acquisition of Pioneer Natural Resources, which closed in late 2023. Exxon anticipates that these "advantaged" assets, including the Permian, Guyana, as well as Exxon's LNG operations, will make up 65% of total production by 2030, contributing to more efficient growth.
3.5%-yielding Exxon on pace to become a "Dividend King"
Also in the press release, management proudly noted Exxon had raised its dividend for 43 consecutive years. Given the new earnings growth outlook, it appears that streak will continue through the end of this decade. That would put Exxon on pace to hit 50 consecutive years of dividend increases shortly thereafter, placing it in a rarefied company of Dividend Kings, or companies with 50 consecutive years of dividend increases -- a feat even more rare for an energy company to achieve.

Also, supply pressures are weighing on T-notes as the Treasury will auction $39 billion of 10-year T-notes later today. T-notes initially moved higher due to some mild short covering ahead of the 2-day FOMC meeting that began today.
European government bond yields are moving lower today. The 10-year German bund yield fell from an 8.5-month high of 2.879% and is down by -0.6 bp to 2.856%. The 10-year UK gilt yield is down by -1.5 bp to 4.513%.
German trade news was weaker than expected after German Oct exports rose +0.1% m/m, slightly weaker than expectations of +0.2% m/m. Also, Oct imports fell -1.2% m/m, weaker than expectations of -0.5% m/m.
Swaps are discounting a 1% chance for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on December 18.
US Stock Movers
Cryptocurrency-exposed stocks are climbing today, with Bitcoin (^BTCUSD) up more than +1%. Galaxy Digital Holdings (GLXY) is up more than +9% after Citizens Jmp Securities LLC initiated coverage of the stock with a recommendation of outperform and a price target of $60. In addition, MARA Holdings (MARA), Riot Platforms (RIOT), Strategy (MSTR), and Coinbase Global (COIN) are up more than +2%.
Toll Brothers (TOL) is down more than -2% to lead homebuilders lower after forecasting 2026 deliveries of 10,300 to 10,700, below the consensus of 10,843. Also, Lennar (LEN) and D R Horton (DHI) are down more than -1%, and PulteGroup (PHM) is down -0.20%.
Ares Management (ARES) is up more than +7% after S&P Dow Jones Indices said the company will replace Kellanova in the S&P 500 before trading begins on Thursday, December 11.
KeyCorp (KEY) is up more than +4% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after CEO Gorman said the bank agreed with activist investor HoldCo Asset Management that the stock is undervalued and has excess capital.
CVS Health (CVS) is up more than +4% after raising guidance on its full-year adjusted EPS forecast to $6.60-$6.70 from a previous forecast of $6.55-$6.65, the midpoint stronger than the consensus of $6.63.
Core & Main Inc (CNM) is up more than +3% after reporting Q3 net sales of $2.06 billion, better than the consensus of $2.05 billion.
Viking Holdings Ltd (VIK) is up more than +2% after Goldman Sachs upgraded the stock to buy from neutral with a price target of $78.
Exxon Mobil (XOM) is up more than +2% after it said it expects $35 billion in cash flow growth by 2030, an increase of about 17% from what it was projecting a year ago.
Otis Worldwide (OTIS) is up more than +1% after BNP Paribas Exane upgraded the stock to outperform from neutral with a price target of $105.
SLM Corp (SLM) is down more than -17% after Compass Point Research & Trading LLC double-downgraded the stock to sell from buy with a price target of $23.
Caleres (CAL) is down more than -9% after reporting Q3 adjusted EPS of 38 cents, well below the consensus of 85 cents.
Graphic Packaging Holding (GPK) is down more than -7% after forecasting full-year net sales of $8.4 billion to $8.6 billion, the midpoint below the consensus of $8.56 billion.
AutoZone (AZO) is down more than -5% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q1 comparable sales rose +5.50%, weaker than the consensus of +5.93%.
Ollie’s Bargain Outlet Holdings (OLLI) is down more than -4% after reporting Q3 comparable sales rose +3.30%, weaker than the consensus of +3.74%.
