Let's look at why the Vanguard Energy ETF has been on a tear, and also look into what circumstances would help it outperform the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) in 2026.
Context is key
The Vanguard Energy ETF has averaged a staggering 30.2% annual return over the last five years, which is significantly higher than the second-place Vanguard Financials ETF, which averaged a 20% annual return over that period.
The lights-out performance of the Vanguard Energy ETF is a good reminder of the importance of context when evaluating a stock or ETF's performance in a given window. Five years ago, the world was in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, and energy stocks were getting walloped. Oil prices drive margins. And in the fall of 2020, oil prices were at multiyear lows. In fact, they went negative in spring 2020 as demand collapsed and storage capacity was unavailable.
The Vanguard Energy ETF has increased threefold in the last five years. But a lot of those gains came in 2021 and 2022 as the global economy recovered, business operations began to normalize, and travel and transportation increased -- driving oil demand. In fact, over the last three years, the Vanguard Energy ETF is roughly flat, gaining barely over 3% compared to an 80% gain in the S&P 500.
Oil prices could fall further
Oil prices are hovering around multiyear lows as supply outpaces demand.
In its October Short-Term Energy Outlook, the Energy Information Administration forecast that global oil inventories would rise further in 2026, putting pressure on oil prices in the fourth quarter of 2025. The EIA projects Brent crude oil prices (the international benchmark) at just $52 per barrel in 2026. Excluding the $41.96 per barrel average in 2020, that would be the lowest level since $45.13 per barrel in 2016, which came in the aftermath of the 2015 crash. For context, Brent crude oil prices averaged over $100 per barrel in 2022 and over $80 per barrel in 2023 and 2024.
Weak 2026 forecasts are likely factored into investor expectations. Investors got a taste of that last week, as oil prices (and oil stocks) jumped on news that the U.S. and European Union are imposing sanctions on Russian oil companies, which could impact supply and shift buying from Russian customers -- like China and India -- to the U.S.
Still, Brent prices in the low $50s per barrel would strain margins and erode profitability for many oil and gas companies. This reinforces why the Vanguard Energy ETF is one of the simplest and most effective ways to invest in top companies in the sector.
An ETF built around quality
The Vanguard Energy ETF has 111 holdings, but a whopping 37.8% is weighted in ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM) and Chevron (NYSE: CVX), and 43.6% if you factor in the most valuable pure-play U.S. exploration and production company -- ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP).
Building a portfolio around these high-quality oil and gas companies is a great bet. ExxonMobil is investing in low-production regions, such as the Permian Basin, its offshore Guyana assets, and liquefied natural gas to push its portfolio toward $30-per-barrel Brent breakeven levels by 2030. Chevron's breakeven is already estimated at about $30 per barrel -- the lowest in the oil patch. ConocoPhillips has breakeven levels below $40 per barrel.
ExxonMobil has increased its dividend for 42 consecutive years, closely followed by Chevron with a 38-year streak. Meanwhile, ConocoPhillips has scrapped its variable dividend and is focused on consistently growing its ordinary dividend, which it should be able to do with its existing portfolio and a slew of high-margin projects in progress.
At the time of this writing, ExxonMobil yields 3.4%, Chevron yields 4.4%, and ConocoPhillips yields 3.5%. These are significantly higher yields than the S&P 500 average of just 1.2%. In fact, the Vanguard Energy ETF yields 3.1% -- driven by the high yields of its three largest holdings as well as exposure to pipeline, transportation, and refining companies that tend to sport high yields.
High-yield stocks at compelling valuations
With a mere 0.09% expense ratio, or just $9 for every $10,000 invested, the Vanguard Energy ETF provides a low-cost way for investors to gain exposure to top U.S. energy companies. The ETF is a particularly good buy for investors looking to boost their passive income with a portfolio built around industry leaders like ExxonMobil, Chevron, and ConocoPhillips, which have low production costs to support their dividends, even at low oil prices.
For the ETF to outperform the S&P 500 in 2026, there would likely need to be a shift in investor preferences from growth stocks to dividend and value stocks -- like what happened in 2022. Or an unexpected uptick in oil and gas prices related to armed conflicts or extended oil production disruptions. No one knows if those events will happen.
What we do know is the ETF continues to be a good value, with a price-to-earnings ratio of just 16.9 compared to 28.9 for the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF. Investors who are worried about valuations, a sell-off in growth stocks, or are simply seeking ways to boost their passive income may want to take a closer look at the Vanguard Energy ETF.

PZZA Stock Slumps on Downgrades
Earnings estimates for Papa John’s have been trending steadily lower since 2022 and were cut again over the past 30 days, giving the stock a Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell) rating. Analysts have reduced current year earnings estimates by 1.7% and next year’s by 4.5%, reflecting continued pressure on both sales and margins.
Revenue growth remains tepid as well, with sales expected to rise just 2.9% this year and 1.2% in 2026, suggesting limited momentum despite efforts to stabilize operations. Adding to the challenge, the Retail–Restaurants industry, of which Papa John’s is a part, currently ranks in the bottom 9% of all Zacks ranked industries, further weighing on investor sentiment and near-term performance potential.
Papa John's International Shares Trade at a Premium
Perhaps most concerning is that, despite multiple bearish catalysts, Papa John’s International continues to trade at a premium valuation. The stock’s forward earnings multiple of 31.2x sits above both the industry average and its own 10-year median of 28x.
Adding to the concern, earnings are projected to grow just 6.6% annually over the next three to five years. That modest outlook gives PZZA a PEG ratio of 4.7, an exceptionally high level that underscores how stretched the valuation appears relative to its growth potential.

Should Investors Buy ExxonMobil & Sell Enterprise Products Now?
In the energy space, Exxon Mobil Corp. and Enterprise Products Partners LP are two giants. Over the past year, XOM has gained a marginal 0.6%, underperforming EPD’s 14% jump. Therefore, is Enterprise Products a better stock?
Notably, price is not the only parameter to underline the attractiveness of any stock, although it reflects investors’ preferences in every business phase. Hence, before coming to investment conclusions, we need to analyze the fundamentals and overall business environment of both stocks.
ExxonMobil’s Broader Business Exposure
ExxonMobil is an integrated energy giant, having exposure to upstream, downstream, chemicals and low-carbon solutions. The energy major’s exploration and production activities span across the Permian, the most prolific resource in the United States, and offshore Guyana. With huge oil and natural gas resources in these two premium regions, ExxonMobil’s production outlook seems bright.
Also, from its downstream and chemicals businesses, XOM produces premium-quality products and lower-emission fuels, thereby adapting to the evolving demand.
Enterprise Products, however, is not an integrated energy company like XOM. EPD primarily focuses on midstream operations, with a pipeline network spanning more than 50,000 miles that transports oil, gas, refined petroleum products, and petrochemicals. Although EPD generates stable fee-based revenues, the partnership is lagging in broader business exposure.
Stronger Balance Sheet of XOM
ExxonMobil has a significantly lower exposure to debt capital, which is reflected in its debt-to-capitalization of 12.6%. Thus, when the business environment turns unfavorable, the integrated energy major can rely on its robust balance sheet to sail through the market uncertainty.
On the contrary, Enterprise Products’ debt-to-capitalization of 52.3% reflects considerably more debt exposure than XOM, although in the midstream space, EPD’s credit rating is the highest. ExxonMobil, by comparison, operates on a much larger scale, with extensive global operations spanning six continents, underscoring its superior financial strength and flexibility.
XOM vs. EPD: Which Is a Better Stock?
XOM is also highly focused on returning capital to shareholders. Notably, for more than four decades, ExxonMobil has been rewarding shareholders with consecutive annual dividend hikes.
On the flip side, EPD’s significant Permian dependence poses a concern. To feed its pipelines and processing plants, Enterprise Products has a considerable reliance on the Permian, the most prolific oil and gas shale play in the United States. On its second-quarter 2025earnings call EPD revealed that most of the core oil-producing regions in the Permian have already been used up, and the exploration and production companies are now increasingly focusing on those areas that are rich in natural gas.
Thus, the composition of commodities that EPD will be transporting in the coming days will probably be weighted more toward natural gas. This will likely create pressure on EPD’s profit margin as natural gas and NGL are less profitable than oil at the wellhead, considering energy density and transport costs.
Thus, considering the overall business environment of both stocks, ExxonMobil seems to be a better player in the energy space with more upside potential, and hence, investors who own the stock can hold onto it. On the contrary, with EPD’s overall outlook remaining bleak, it would be a wiser decision to stay away from the overvalued stock, carrying a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell). The overvaluation is reflected in the fact that Enterprise Products trades at a trailing 12-month enterprise value to EBITDA (EV/EBITDA) of 10.04X, above XOM’s 7.40X.

Over the next decade or so, each one could receive the Dividend King crown. For investors looking to build a passive income stream that grows over time, consider these stocks worthy of consideration.
1. Air Products and Chemicals is a dividend growth turnaround story
Air Products and Chemicals (NYSE: APD) has raised its dividend 43 years in a row. In other words, the company, one of several that dominate the industrial gas industry, is just seven years away from reaching Dividend King status.
So far this year, macro uncertainties, including tariffs, have weighed on Air Products and Chemical's fiscal performance and sentiment. In turn, this has weighed on the stock, which has fallen by double-digits since the start of 2025. Still, while near-term price performance has been choppy, the company has continued to increase its dividend.
Earlier in the year, it increased its quarterly payout from $1.77 to $1.79 per share, or by a little over 1%. At current prices, the stock has a forward dividend yield of 2.8%. However, don't assume that future dividend increases will remain modest.
Air Products and Chemicals in the midst of a turnaround. After a C-suite shakeup earlier this year, the company has scaled back its clean hydrogen projects, shifting focus back to its main industrial gas business.
Sell-side analysts anticipate this will result in a return to positive earnings growth during the current fiscal year ending September 2026. If Air Products meets or beats these expectations, and delivers low single-digit/high double-digit earnings growth in the coming year, not only could management decide to implement a more significant dividend increase, the stock could bounce back toward prior highs.
2. Atmos Energy has nearly four decades of dividend growth under its belt
Based in Dallas, Atmos Energy (NYSE: ATO) distributes natural gas to customers across the United States. Utilities companies typically have long dividend growth track records, and Atmos is no exception. While it has yet to become a Dividend King, with 38 years of consecutive dividend growth under its belt, the company is only 12 years away from reaching this status.
Currently, Atmos Energy shares have a forward dividend yield of around 2%. That may not sound like much, but Atmos' quarterly dividend has had more than 8% annualized dividend growth over the past decade.
Steady dividend growth is likely to continue in the years ahead, as the company guides for 6%-8% earnings growth over the next few years and its business remains fully regulated, subject to steady growth while at the same time sheltered by the volatility of the unregulated utilities market.
Admittedly, following the stock's surge from $140 to $175 per share since the start of 2025, there are concerns that Atmos has moved up too far, too fast. However, the company's current forward price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple of 24 is in line with competitors like Southwest Gas.
If the valuation holds steady, the combination of consistently growing dividend payouts and price appreciation could result solid total returns over many years.
3. ExxonMobil has long prioritized annual dividend increases
Among oil stocks, ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM) has the longest dividend growth track record. For the past 42 years, the upstream and downstream oil and gas company has increased its dividend. Currently, ExxonMobil has a forward yield of 3.4%. Even during challenging times, the company has prioritized maintaining its status as a dividend growth stock.
A prime example is back in 2021. Despite challenging conditions in the oil and gas market, ExxonMobil still raised its quarterly payout, although by just a penny, in order to keep the dividend growth streak going.
In more recent years, as oil and gas prices recovered from the pandemic and as ExxonMobil aggressively restructured to reduce operating expenses, the rate of dividend growth has increased once again. In 2024, ExxonMobil raised its dividend by 4%.
Alongside the potential for mid-single-digit dividend growth is the prospect of share price gains on earnings growth. The company continues to prioritize efficiency, as seen with its latest plans to lay off 3% to 4% of its global workforce.
Other efforts, such as realizing cost synergies related to last year's purchase of Pioneer Natural Resources, could result in billions in annual cost savings between now and 2030. This could translate into many more years of dividend growth -- perhaps enough years to enable ExxonMobil to reach Dividend King status.

With a market cap of $1.8 trillion, it might seem premature to suggest tech titan Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) is destined for membership in the $3 trillion club, but the evidence is clear. If this comes to pass, investors who buy shares today could pocket returns of 67% if Meta crosses the $3 trillion mark. Here's why I believe the writing is on the wall.
A captive audience
Meta is the parent company behind several of the world's most popular social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. To stake its claim in the AI revolution, Meta tapped the information it compiles from the nearly 3.5 billion users who visit one of its platforms every day. This data helped the company develop its suite of Llama large language models (LLMs), which are among the most competitive in the industry. This positions Meta to profit from the tidal wave of AI adoption.
The company benefits from its foray into AI in other ways. Meta has long used machine learning -- an earlier branch of AI -- to surface relevant content for users and direct its targeted advertising. The development of generative AI only increased Meta's advantage, as the company curated AI-powered tools to help advertisers succeed.
The results tell the tale. In the second quarter, Meta generated revenue of $47.5 billion, which climbed 22% year over year, resulting in diluted earnings per share (EPS) of $7.14, which jumped 38%.
Commentary from CEO Mark Zuckerberg shed light on the results. He noted that AI is "unlocking greater efficiency and gains across our ads system ... [driving] roughly 5% more ad conversions on Instagram and 3% on Facebook." There's more. The company's content strategy is bearing fruit as users spent 5% more time on Facebook and 6% more on Instagram. More time translates to more advertising, which ultimately increases revenue.
The company's ever-expanding user base and increasing ad conversions position Meta for continued success.
The path to $3 trillion
Meta has a market cap of roughly $1.8 trillion (as of this writing), so it will take a stock price increase of roughly 66% to propel its value to $3 trillion. Wall Street's estimates that Meta will generate revenue of $196 billion in 2025, giving the stock a forward price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of 9. Assuming its P/S remains constant, Meta will need to generate revenue of roughly $327 billion annually to support a $3 trillion market cap.
Furthermore, Wall Street is currently forecasting Meta's revenue growth at nearly 15% annually over the next five years. If the company can achieve this benchmark, it could surpass a $3 trillion market cap as soon as 2029. Those projections might well be conservative, as Meta has grown its trailing-12-month revenue by more than 897% over the past decade.
Finally, at less than 27 times trailing-12-month earnings, Meta's valuation is cheaper than the multiple of 31 for the S&P 500 -- yet has increased by 656% over the past 10 years, well ahead of the S&P 500, which gained just 232%.

Prediction: This Unstoppable Stock Will Join Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, and Alphabet in the $3 Trillion Club Before 2029

(RTTNews) - California's new climate disclosure laws, according to Exxon Mobil Corporation, violate the company's First Amendment rights by requiring it to support what it describes as the state's ideological message, that big businesses are largely to blame for climate change. The company has filed a federal lawsuit against the state.
The lawsuit, which was filed in the U.S Eastern District Court for California, contests two laws that Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law in 2024 Senate Bill.
These regulations mandate that big businesses reveal their financial risks associated with climate change as well as their greenhouse gas emissions, including indirect Scope 3 emissions from transportation, supply chains, and product use.
Although it already reports emissions and climate risks, ExxonMobil contends that California's required framework unfairly singles out large corporations, inflating their environmental impact and seeking to shame them.
The business argues that the laws violate constitutional rights by requiring speech that advances the political agenda of the state.
When the reporting requirements go into effect starting in 2026, the California Air Resources Board projects that over 4,000 American businesses will have to comply.
ExxonMobil is attempting to prevent the laws from being enforced before they take effect, despite the fact that similar free speech challenges have been unsuccessful in court in the past.

In the energy space, Exxon Mobil Corporation XOM and Enterprise ProductsPartners LP EPD are two giants. Over the past year, XOM has gained a marginal 0.6%, underperforming EPD’s 14% jump. Therefore, is Enterprise Products a better stock?

Notably, price is not the only parameter to underline the attractiveness of any stock, although it reflects investors’ preferences in every business phase. Hence, before coming to investment conclusions, we need to analyze the fundamentals and overall business environment of both stocks.
ExxonMobil’s Broader Business Exposure
ExxonMobil is an integrated energy giant, having exposure to upstream, downstream, chemicals and low-carbon solutions. The energy major’s exploration and production activities span across the Permian, the most prolific resource in the United States, and offshore Guyana. With huge oil and natural gas resources in these two premium regions, ExxonMobil’s production outlook seems bright.
Also, from its downstream and chemicals businesses, XOM produces premium-quality products and lower-emission fuels, thereby adapting to the evolving demand.
Enterprise Products, however, is not an integrated energy company like XOM. EPD primarily focuses on midstream operations, with a pipeline network spanning more than 50,000 miles that transports oil, gas, refined petroleum products, and petrochemicals. Although EPD generates stable fee-based revenues, the partnership is lagging in broader business exposure.
Stronger Balance Sheet of XOM
ExxonMobil has a significantly lower exposure to debt capital, which is reflected in its debt-to-capitalization of 12.6%. Thus, when the business environment turns unfavorable, the integrated energy major can rely on its robust balance sheet to sail through the market uncertainty.
On the contrary, Enterprise Products’ debt-to-capitalization of 52.3% reflects considerably more debt exposure than XOM, although in the midstream space, EPD’s credit rating is the highest. ExxonMobil, by comparison, operates on a much larger scale, with extensive global operations spanning six continents, underscoring its superior financial strength and flexibility.

XOM vs. EPD: Which is a Better Stock?
XOM is also highly focused on returning capital to shareholders. Notably, for more than four decades, ExxonMobil has been rewarding shareholders with consecutive annual dividend hikes.
On the flip side, EPD’s significant Permian dependence poses a concern. To feed its pipelines and processing plants, Enterprise Products has a considerable reliance on the Permian, the most prolific oil and gas shale play in the United States. On its second-quarter 2025earnings call EPD revealed that most of the core oil-producing regions in the Permian have already been used up, and the exploration and production companies are now increasingly focusing on those areas that are rich in natural gas.
Thus, the composition of commodities that EPD will be transporting in the coming days will probably be weighted more toward natural gas. This will likely create pressure on EPD’s profit margin as natural gas and NGL are less profitable than oil at the wellhead, considering energy density and transport costs.
Thus, considering the overall business environment of both stocks, ExxonMobil seems to be a better player in the energy space with more upside potential, and hence, investors who own the stock can hold onto it. On the contrary, with EPD’s overall outlook remaining bleak, it would be a wiser decision to stay away from the overvalued stock, carrying a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell). From a fundamental perspective, Exxon’s position remains exceptionally strong. The company is generating a free cash flow yield of roughly 6.9%, well above its 10-year median of 4.8%. Exxon has steadily used its massive cash generation to fund dividends, repurchase shares, and invest in new energy projects, all while maintaining one of the strongest balance sheets among global majors.
Turning to the technical picture, the real story here unfolds on the long-term chart. For over two years, XOM’s stock price has been consolidating within a broad, well-defined trading range. This sideways movement has formed a large bull flag pattern, suggesting that the stock has been quietly building energy for its next major move.
Currently, XOM is pressing against the upper boundary of that pattern around the $117 resistance level. A decisive breakout above this zone would mark the stock’s first significant move to new highs since late 2024 and could trigger a powerful upside continuation. With crude oil prices rebounding sharply in recent sessions, this breakout setup may finally be primed to play out.

Parr Pacific: Shares Rally on Earnings Upgrades

That means Berkshire Hathaway enjoyed gains of 5,502,284% versus the index's return of 39,054%.
And here's one more lesson that Buffett teaches -- the importance of diversification. Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio includes dozens of companies, some of them being the best-known in the world. Buffett knows that you shouldn't put all your eggs in one or two stocks. You need to spread it around.
So, let's create an ideal Buffett-inspired portfolio comprised of some of Berkshire Hathaway's holdings. Using fractional shares, we'll divide a hypothetical portfolio of $5,000 equally into four stocks, which represent a variety of industries. Here's how it shakes down, investing $1,250 into each.
Amazon
Buffett doesn't invest in a lot of tech stocks, but he made an exception for Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN). Amazon has a dominant position as an e-commerce company, bringing in $136.8 billion in revenue in the second quarter alone. But Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the profit driver for Amazon stock, growing 17% from a year ago and accounting for more than half of Amazon's total profit.
Amazon stock is little changed on the year, but the company's growth story is clear, particularly as more companies look to migrate to the cloud -- where Amazon has a leading position with 30% of the global cloud computing market. You can buy 5.6 shares of Amazon stock with your $1,250 investment.
American Express
Berkshire Hathaway also has stock in Mastercard and Visa, but my pick here is American Express (NYSE: AXP) for a couple of reasons. First, the company has an extra income stream -- it not only issues cards like Visa and Mastercard, but it also has its own payment network from which it makes loans and earns income from the interest. American Express reported $5.4 billion in loan income in the third quarter of fiscal 2025, up 10% from a year ago.
American Express also offers a small dividend, with a yield of 0.9%, which is always a welcome addition to a portfolio. With the stock currently around $350, you'll get roughly 3.5 shares with your $1,250 investment.
Chevron
Chevron (NYSE: CVX) is a consolidated energy company that just got bigger. It recently completed its $55 billion acquisition of Hess, beating out ExxonMobil in a legal battle that gives Chevron access to the Guyana Stabroek Block's 11 billion barrels of oil.
The company's earnings have suffered this year as oil prices have fallen, but Chevron still prints money. Revenue of $44.8 billion in the second quarter was down from $51.2 billion a year ago. And earnings slipped from $4.4 billion and $2.43 per share to $2.49 billion and $1.45 per share.
But remember, you're buying Chevron here as a long-term play, and I don't mind getting in while it's slightly underperforming the market. The 4.4% dividend yield is a nice kicker as well. You can get just over eight shares of Chevron stock.
Coca-Cola
Remember, Buffett likes companies that have a great competitive moat. That's why when you're looking for consumer staples companies, Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO) stands out. Coca-Cola has a 48% market share in the U.S. soft drink market, and it also sells water, sports drinks, juices, coffee, and alcohol-infused drinks.
The company just posted third-quarter earnings, in which net revenue jumped by 5% from a year ago to $12.5 billion and earnings per share rose 30% to $0.86. Coca-Cola also provides a dividend yield of 3% -- making this a delicious addition to your portfolio.
Priced at just $71, you can add more than 17 shares of Coca-Cola stock with your $1,250 allotment.
The power of compounding
There are a lot of ways you can make a Buffett-flavored portfolio for the long term. And while this is just a suggestion, the most important thing you can do is to consistently add to your holdings and reinvest your dividend returns to accelerate your growth.
