The Chemical Products segment manufactures and markets petrochemicals including olefins, polyolefins, and intermediates. The Specialty Products segment offers performance products, including lubricants, basestocks, waxes, synthetics, elastomers, and resins. The company also involves in the manufacturing, trade, transport, and sale of crude oil, natural gas, petroleum products, petrochemicals, and other specialty products; and pursuit lower-emission business opportunities, including carbon capture and storage, hydrogen, lower-emission fuels, and lithium. Soaring crude oil prices boosted inflation expectations and bond yields, and were negative for stocks. WTI crude oil surged to a 3-week high on Wednesday after the US signaled it will maintain its naval blockade of Iran for the foreseeable future. The Wall Street Journal reported that President Trump told his aides to prepare for an extended blockade and that it carries less of a risk for the US than resuming hostilities or walking away from the conflict without securing a deal that curbs Iran’s nuclear activities.

The broader market came under pressure on Wednesday after three FOMC members dissented in favor of no easing bias in the FOMC ‘s decision to keep policy unchanged. Also, hawkish comments from Fed Chair Powell weighed on stocks, as he said a bit of monetary policy restraint is the right place to be. The 10-year T-note yield rose +6 bp to a 1-month high of 4.41%.
The Nasdaq 100 moved higher on Wednesday as technology stocks rallied on signs that demand for AI infrastructure remains strong. NXP Semiconductors NV rose +25%, and Seagate Technology Holdings Plc rose by more than +10% to lead chipmakers and AI infrastructure stocks higher after reporting stronger-than-expected earnings results. The markets are awaiting earnings from four of the Magnificent Seven technology stocks after Wednesday’s close, as Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta Platforms will report quarterly results.
Wednesday’s US housing starts and core capital goods new orders reports were better than expected, a supportive factor for stocks.
US MBA mortgage applications fell -1.6% in the week ended April 24, with the purchase mortgage sub-index up +1.2% and the refinancing sub-index down -4.4%. The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage rose by +2 bp to 6.37% from 6.35% in the prior week.
US Mar housing starts unexpectedly rose +10.8% m/m to a 15-month high of 1.502 million, stronger than expectations of a decline to 1.380 million. Mar building permits, a proxy for future construction, fell -10.8% m/m to a 7-month low of 1.372 million, weaker than expectations of 1.390 million.
US Mar capital goods new orders nondefense ex-aircraft and parts, a proxy for capital spending, rose +3.3% m/m, stronger than expectations of +0.5% m/m and the largest increase in 5.75 years.
WTI crude oil prices (CLM26) soared by more than +6% on Wednesday as the US and Iran are locked in a battle for control of the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides blocking the waterway to gain leverage during an extended ceasefire. The Strait of Hormuz remains essentially closed, threatening to deepen the global energy crisis, as flows of crude, natural gas, and oil products from the Persian Gulf have been cut off since the war began in late February. Crude prices raced to their highs on Wednesday after President Trump told Axios that he will not lift a naval blockade of Iran's ports until he secures a deal with Iran to address the country's nuclear program. The ongoing blockade could exacerbate global oil and fuel shortages, as about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transits through the strait. Goldman Sachs estimates that crude output in the Persian Gulf has been curtailed by about 14.5 million bpd, or more than 50%, so far in April, and that the current disruption has drawn down nearly 500 million bbl from global crude stockpiles, which could hit a billion bbl by June.
As expected, the FOMC kept the fed funds target rate unchanged at 3.50% to 3.75%. The vote was 8-4 in favor of the decision, with Fed Governor Miran dissenting in favor of a -25 bp rate cut. Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack, Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari, and Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan said they "supported maintaining the target range for the federal funds rate but did not support inclusion of an easing bias in the statement at this time."
The post-meeting statement said, "Developments in the Middle East are contributing to a high level of uncertainty." Also, "job gains have remained low, on average," and the jobless rate "has been little changed in recent months, while inflation "is elevated, in part reflecting the recent increase in global energy prices."
Fed Chair Powell said policymakers think the policy stance is in a very good place to wait, as inflation is kind of misbehaving, and that maybe a little bit of restriction in monetary policy is the right place to be.
Kevin Warsh won the banking confirmation vote of the Senate Banking Committee on Wednesday, putting him on track to be confirmed as Fed Chair by the full Senate before Jerome Powell’s term ends on May 15. Fed Chair Powell said after Wednesday’s FOMC meeting that he will continue to serve as Fed Governor “for a period of time to be determined.” Mr. Powell’s seat on the Board of Governors doesn’t expire until 2028.
The markets are discounting a 0% chance for a +25 bp FOMC rate cut or a rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on June 16-17.
Earnings season ramps up this week with several Magnificent Seven technology stocks reporting. Earnings results thus far have been supportive of stocks. As of Wednesday, 81% of the 220 S&P 500 companies that reported Q1 earnings have beaten estimates. Q1 S&P 500 earnings are projected to climb +12% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Stripping out the technology sector, Q1 earnings are projected to increase around +3%, the weakest in two years.
Overseas stock markets settled mixed on Wednesday. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell to a 3-week low and closed down -0.34%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +0.71%. Japan's Nikkei Stock Average did not trade, as markets in Japan were closed for the Showa Day holiday.
Interest Rates
June 10-year T-notes (ZNM6) on Wednesday closed down -16 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield rose +5.5 bp to 4.4010%. Jun T-notes fell to a 4-week low, and the 10-year T-note yield rose to a 1-month high of 4.430%. T-notes were under pressure on Thursday amid rising crude oil prices, as WTI surged more than +6% to a 32-week high, boosting inflation expectations. The 10-year breakeven inflation rate rose to 1 14.5-month high of 2.479% on Wednesday. T-notes were also pressured by stronger-than-expected US economic reports on Mar housing starts and Mar core capital goods new orders.
T-notes sank to their lows on Wednesday afternoon after three FOMC members dissented in favor of a no-easing bias in the committee’s policy decision. Also, Fed Chair Powell said a little bit of restriction in monetary policy is the right place to be.
European government bond yields moved higher on Wednesday. The 10-year German bund yield rose to a 1-month high of 3.118% and finished up +4.3 bp to 3.110%. The 10-year UK gilt yield climbed to a 1-month high of 5.078% and finished up +6.5 bp to 5.071%.
Eurozone Apr economic confidence fell -3.2 to a nearly 5.5-year low of 93.0, weaker than expectations of 95.1.
Eurozone Mar M3 money supply rose +3.2% y/y, stronger than expectations of +3.1% y/y.
Swaps are discounting a 12% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on Thursday.
US Stock Movers
NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI) closed up more than +25% to lead chipmakers and AI infrastructure stocks higher after forecasting Q2 revenue of $3.35 billion to $3.55 billion, stronger than the consensus of $3.27 billion. Intel (INTC) closed up more than +12%, and Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX) closed up +11% after forecasting Q4 adjusted EPS of $4.80 to $5.20, well above the consensus of $3.96. Also, Sandisk (SNDK) and Microchip Technology (MCHP) closed up more than +6%, and Western Digital (WDC) closed up more than +5%. In addition, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Qualcomm (QCOM) closed up more than +4%, and Micron Technology (MU) and Marvell Technology (MRVL) closed up more than +2%.
Energy producers and service providers rallied on Wednesday after WTI crude oil rose more than +6% to a 3-week high. Phillips 66 (PSX) closed up more than +5%, and APA Corp (APA) and Valero Energy (VLO) closed up more than +4%. Also, Marathon Petroleum (MPC), Occidental Petroleum (OXY), Devon Energy (DVN), and ConocoPhillips (COP) closed up more than +3%, and Diamondback Energy (FANG), Exxon Mobil (XOM), Halliburton (HAL), and Chevron (CVX) closed up more than +2%.
Airlines and cruise line operators were under pressure on Wednesday as WTI crude oil rose more than +6% to a 2-week high. Alaska Air Group (ALK) closed down more than -3%, and American Airlines Group (AAL), Southwest Airlines (LUV), and Carnival (CCL) closed down more than -2%. Also, United Airlines Holdings (UAL) andDelta Air Lines (DAL) closed down more than -1%.
Bloom Energy (BE) closed up more than +27% after boosting its full-year revenue forecast to $3.4 billion to $3.8 billion from a prior forecast of $3.1 billion to $3.3 billion, above the consensus of $3.25 billion.
Generac Holdings (GNRC) closed up more than +16% after reporting Q1 net sales of $1.06 billion, better than the consensus of $1.05 billion.
Rush Street Interactive (RSI) closed up more than +16% after forecasting full-year revenue between $1.49 billion and $1.54 billion, better than the consensus of $1.38 billion.
Visa (V) closed up more than +8% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials after reporting Q2 net revenue of $11.23 billion, stronger than the consensus of $10.74 billion.
Starbucks (SBUX) closed up more than +8% after reporting Q2 comparable sales were up +6.20%, well above the consensus of +3.65%, and raised its full-year comparable sales forecast to at least +5% from a prior view of at least +3%.
General Dynamics (GD) closed up more than +7% after reporting Q1 revenue of $13.48 billion, well above the consensus of $12.70 billion.
Teradyne (TER) closed down more than -19% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after forecasting Q2 revenue of $1.15 billion to $1.25 billion, failing to exceed the consensus of $1.20 billion meaningfully.
GE Healthcare (GEHC) closed down more than -13% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100 after cutting its full-year adjusted EPS forecast to $4.80 to $5.00 from a previous forecast of $4.95 to $5.15, weaker than the consensus of $5.06.
Robinhood Markets (HOOD) closed down more than -13% after reporting Q1 net revenue of $1.07 billion, below the consensus of $1.14 billion.
Brown-Forman (BF.B) closed down more than -10% after JPMorgan Chase downgraded the stock to underweight from neutral with a price target of $23.
CoStar Group (CSGP) closed down more than -5% after forecasting full-year revenue of $3.78 billion to $3.82 billion, the midpoint below the consensus of $3.81 billion.

Stocks Settle Mixed Ahead of Megacap Tech Earnings

Oil is rising as the prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz continues to drain global oil stockpiles.

Oil prices are surging again on Wednesday. The price of Brent oil (the global price benchmark) jumped more than 6% today to over $118 a barrel, while WTI (U.S. oil benchmark) leaped nearly 7% to around $107 per barrel. At one point, Brent traded at $119.76 per barrel, its highest level since 2022, while some other oil grades are trading near record levels of $150 a barrel.
Oil prices are soaring amid the ongoing impasse in peace talks between the U.S. and Iran, prolonging the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and U.S. Navy blockade. The supply shock
The war with Iran has impacted more than 12 million barrels per day of oil supply, about 12% of total demand. The world is covering this shortfall by drawing down oil inventories and reducing demand.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported that U.S. oil exports hit a record 6.4 million barrels per day last week, up 1.6 million barrels per day from the prior week. Most of these barrels came from storage, as U.S. crude inventories drew down by 6.2 million barrels to 459.5 million barrels.
While the U.S. and other countries can continue to draw down storage inventories for a while, they won't last forever. At this point, U.S. producers aren't ramping up their drilling activities to increase output. As a result, oil prices will likely remain elevated through the end of this year, because the world will need to restock inventories, which countries could rebuild above pre-war levels to increase preparedness for another supply shock.
Cash in on higher for longer oil prices
Unless there's a rapid reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and a quick restart of shut-in production across the Persian Gulf, oil prices could remain high into 2027. That will benefit oil companies, many of which have focused on enhancing their ability to prosper at lower prices.
ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM) is a prime example. The global energy giant has been working on a transformational strategy to improve its profitability over the past several years. It's investing heavily in its advantaged resources (lowest-cost and highest-margin) while also working to deliver industry-leading structural cost savings ($15.1 billion in cumulative savings delivered since 2019). Exxon's strategy currently has it on track to grow its annual earnings capacity by $25 billion and cash flow by $35 billion by 2030, at constant oil prices and margins relative to 2024 levels. Its five-year plan would also deliver $145 billion in surplus cash at $65 oil. Exxon's strategy to improve its profitability has put it in an even stronger position to cash in on higher oil prices this year. That could enable Exxon to repurchase more shares than the $20 billion it initially expected this year.
Devon Energy (NYSE: DVN) has also put itself in a better position to make more money at lower oil prices. The company has grown its scale through a series of acquisitions. It's in the process of further increasing its scale by combining with Coterra Energy to create a premier U.S. shale operator, in a deal that should close this quarter. The larger oil company will generate even more cash flow as it combines capabilities and delivers cost savings. Devon expects the deal to enable it to accelerate shareholder returns through a higher dividend and a share repurchase program of more than $5 billion. Higher oil prices could allow it to execute that buyback faster than initially expected.
Oil could remain elevated for a long time
The prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz has pushed crude oil prices to their highest level since 2022. Oil could go even higher if it remains closed indefinitely. Several oil companies put themselves in a strong position to capitalize on higher oil prices by focusing on becoming more profitable at lower prices, including ExxonMobil and Devon Energy. That makes them among the best oil stocks to buy right now, given the likelihood that oil prices will remain high for the rest of this year.

The 2-day FOMC meeting concludes this afternoon, and the Fed kept monetary policy unchanged as expected, despite a record number of dissenting votes. The markets will look to Fed Chair Powell's post-meeting comments for guidance on the future direction of Fed policy. Today’s FOMC meeting is the last for Mr. Powell as Fed Chair, as his term expires on May 15.
Kevin Warsh now appears to be on a glide path toward Senate approval as the new Fed Chair after Senator Thom Tillis said on Sunday that he dropped his opposition to the nomination. Mr. Tillis dropped his opposition after the US Justice Department dropped its criminal investigation into the Fed’s overspending on the renovation of its building, in line with Mr. Tillis’ demand. Mr. Tillis views the investigation into Fed Chair Powell as an attempt to force the Fed to cut interest rates. The Senate Banking Committee is due to vote on Mr. Warsh’s appointment today and then send the nomination to the full Senate for a vote.
The markets are discounting a 0% chance for a +25 bp FOMC rate hike at the conclusion of today’s policy meeting. The markets are expecting the FOMC to leave policy unchanged this week as it awaits further developments in oil prices and inflation.

Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX) is up +14% after forecasting Q4 adjusted EPS of $4.80 to $5.20, well above the consensus of $3.96. Also, Western Digital (WDC) is up more than +12%, and Sandisk (SNDK) is up more than +9%. Stocks Mixed After Fed Holds Rates Steady in Powell's Farewell

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) today is down -0.04%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) is down -0.49%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) is up +0.48%. June E-mini S&P futures (ESM26) are down -0.05%, and June E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQM26) are up +0.48%.
Stock indexes are mixed today, with the Dow Jones Industrials falling to a 1.5-week low. Soaring crude oil prices are lifting inflation expectations and bond yields and are negative for stocks. WTI crude oil climbed to a 2-week high today after the US signaled it will maintain its naval blockade of Iran for the foreseeable future. The Wall Street Journal reported that President Trump told his aides to prepare for an extended blockade and that it carries less of a risk for the US than resuming hostilities or walking away from the conflict without securing a deal that curbs Iran’s nuclear activities. The 10-year T-note yield is up +5 bp to a 4-week high of 4.40%.

The Nasdaq 100 is higher today as technology stocks climb on signs that demand for AI infrastructure remains strong. NXP Semiconductors NV and Seagate Technology Holdings Plc are up more than +14% to lead chipmakers and AI infrastructure stocks higher after reporting stronger-than-expected earnings results. The markets are awaiting earnings from four of the Magnificent Seven technology stocks after the close today, as Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta Platforms will report quarterly results.
Today’s US housing starts and core capital goods new orders reports were better than expected, a supportive factor for stocks.
US MBA mortgage applications fell -1.6% in the week ended April 24, with the purchase mortgage sub-index up +1.2% and the refinancing sub-index down -4.4%. The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage rose by +2 bp to 6.37% from 6.35% in the prior week.
US Mar housing starts unexpectedly rose +10.8% m/m to a 15-month high of 1.502 million, stronger than expectations of a decline to 1.380 million. Mar building permits, a proxy for future construction, fell -10.8% m/m to a 7-month low of 1.372 million, weaker than expectations of 1.390 million.
US Mar capital goods new orders nondefense ex-aircraft and parts, a proxy for capital spending, rose +3.3% m/m, stronger than expectations of +0.5% m/m and the largest increase in 5.75 years.
WTI crude oil prices (CLM26) are up by more than +5% today as the US and Iran are locked in a battle for control of the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides blocking the waterway to gain leverage during an extended ceasefire. The Strait of Hormuz remains essentially closed, threatening to deepen the global energy crisis, as flows of crude, natural gas, and oil products from the Persian Gulf have been cut off since the war began in late February. The ongoing blockade could exacerbate global oil and fuel shortages, as about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transits through the strait. Goldman Sachs estimates that crude output in the Persian Gulf has been curtailed by about 14.5 million bpd, or more than 50%, so far in April, and that the current disruption has drawn down nearly 500 million bbl from global crude stockpiles, which could hit a billion bbl by June.
The 2-day FOMC meeting concludes this afternoon, and the Fed is expected to keep monetary policy unchanged. The markets will look to Fed Chair Powell's post-meeting comments for guidance on the future direction of Fed policy. Today’s FOMC meeting is the last for Mr. Powell as Fed Chair, as his term expires on May 15.
Kevin Warsh now appears to be on a glide path toward Senate approval as the new Fed Chair after Senator Thom Tillis said on Sunday that he dropped his opposition to the nomination. Mr. Tillis dropped his opposition after the US Justice Department dropped its criminal investigation into the Fed’s overspending on the renovation of its building, in line with Mr. Tillis’ demand. Mr. Tillis views the investigation into Fed Chair Powell as an attempt to force the Fed to cut interest rates. The Senate Banking Committee is due to vote on Mr. Warsh’s appointment today and then send the nomination to the full Senate for a vote.
The markets are discounting a 0% chance for a +25 bp FOMC rate hike at the conclusion of today’s policy meeting. The markets are expecting the FOMC to leave policy unchanged this week as it awaits further developments in oil prices and inflation.
Earnings season ramps up this week with several Magnificent Seven technology stocks reporting. Earnings results thus far have been supportive of stocks. As of today, 80% of the 199 S&P 500 companies that reported Q1 earnings have beaten estimates. Q1 S&P 500 earnings are projected to climb +12% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Stripping out the technology sector, Q1 earnings are projected to increase around +3%, the weakest in two years.
Overseas stock markets are mixed today. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell to a 3-week low and is down -0.33%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +0.71%. Japan's Nikkei Stock Average did not trade, as markets in Japan were closed for the Showa Day holiday.

June 10-year T-notes (ZNM6) today are down -9 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is up +4.4 bp to 4.390%. Jun T-notes fell to a 4-week low, and the 10-year T-note yield rose to a 4-week high of 4.402%. Coca-Cola
Soft drink giant Coca-Cola has an iconic brand that's known all over the world. In the stock market, it's known for providing shareholders with not only dividend payments but also dividend growth. Currently, the stock yields 2.6%, which is more than double the rate of the S&P 500 average (1.1%).
The company has been paying investors a dividend consistently, going back to 1920, before the Great Depression. It's a remarkable accomplishment to be able to have the financial strength to do that, given how volatile economic cycles can be over the long term. What's perhaps even more impressive is that it has been raising its dividend for 64 consecutive years, easily qualifying it as a Dividend King, which includes stocks that have been raising their payouts for at least 50 years.
Its drink products aren't all that expensive compared to many other food products, and thus, it's easy to see why demand remains fairly strong for Coca-Cola, even when the economy may not be doing so well. In 2025, its revenue totaled $47.9 billion, which was still a decent 2% increase over the previous year.
ExxonMobil
Another top dividend stock that resonates with risk-averse investors is ExxonMobil. The oil and gas giant pays its shareholders 2.7%, and while it may not have the dividend streak that Coca-Cola does, it has been increasing its annual payout for 43 consecutive years.
It has, however, been paying its shareholders for longer. It first paid a dividend in 1882. Back then, it was Standard Oil. It has evolved over the years, and with a continued reliance on oil and gas, demand for its products is consistently strong. The war in Iran is a reminder of just how dependent global economies are on oil, and why Exxon's stock can be a great option for risk-averse investors to consider.
The company routinely generates well over $300 billion in annual revenue, and this past year, its earnings totaled $28.8 billion, which was actually down from $33.7 billion a year ago. Exxon is a top company in the industry, and with strong financials, it makes for a terrific dividend stock to just buy and hold. This year, with oil prices climbing higher, the stock is already up 26%.
York Water
The York Water Company is as dependable a dividend stock as you can find. It's in the wastewater business. While it may not be terribly exciting, the company provides a crucial service to communities, which translates into consistently strong results. It's not a huge company, but it is a highly profitable one. Last year, it reported more than $20 million in profit on revenue of $77 million, for an impressive margin of 26%.
The stock offers the highest yield on this list, at around 3.1%. But what's remarkable about York Water is that the company hasn't missed a dividend payment for over 210 years, with its streak going back to 1816. York Water has also been increasing its dividend in recent years, and its payout has risen by 47% over the past 10 years.
York Water may not make for a compelling growth investment, but investors can depend on it for a solid and dependable dividend. And with a manageable payout ratio of around 64%, there is no risk of its impressive streak ending anytime soon.

Exxon Mobil and Occidental Petroleum are two of the best-known energy stocks. Exxon is one of the largest public companies in the world, with a market cap of $633 billion. Occidental, on the other hand, boasts a market cap of $59 billion, roughly 10x smaller than Exxon’s.
This difference in size is also reflected in the two companies’ respective revenue. Exxon’s quarterly revenue has averaged around $83 billion over the last three years, while Occidental has generated about $6.5 billion in quarterly revenue over the same period.
However, revenue isn’t the only factor for investors to consider. Both Exxon and Occidental should be viewed through a value lens. On that front, Exxon offers a dividend yield of 2.7%, while Occidental has a dividend yield of 1.7%.
As for profitability, Occidental has a higher operating margin of 9.3% compared to ExxonMobil’s 7.5%. However, this gap has steadily narrowed in recent quarters.
In summary, Exxon Mobil easily wins the head-to-head matchup on size — but that shouldn’t be the only consideration for investors. For value-oriented investors in particular, measures of profitability, cash flow, and the health of the balance sheet are also factors worth considering.

Wall Street expects a year-over-year decline in earnings on higher revenues when Flowco Holdings Inc. (FLOC) reports results for the quarter ended March 2026. While this widely-known consensus outlook is important in gauging the company's earnings picture, a powerful factor that could impact its near-term stock price is how the actual results compare to these estimates.
The earnings report, which is expected to be released on May 6, might help the stock move higher if these key numbers are better than expectations. On the other hand, if they miss, the stock may move lower.

COP generates revenues primarily through the exploration, production, transportation and marketing of crude oil, natural gas, natural gas liquids and bitumen. Since ConocoPhillips generates revenues from upstream operations, with crude oil contributing the largest portion of revenues, its business model is highly dependent on commodity price volatility.
Escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, involving Iran, Israel and the United States, have pushed crude prices upward, creating a supportive business environment for ConocoPhillips. Rising West Texas Intermediate (‘WTI’) and Brent crude prices, fueled by the ongoing conflict, are expected to benefit COP’s earnings. With WTI prices trading above $95 per barrel and Brent crude trading higher than $105 per barrel, according to Oilprice.com, the upstream player is well-positioned to benefit from stronger realizations across its global upstream portfolio.

Leveraging its deep-rooted presence in the Lower 48 region, combined with elevated crude prices, the company continues to drive operational efficiency and position itself to deliver sustained cash flow and shareholder value.
Will FANG & XOM Gain From Elevated Crude Prices?
Similar to ConocoPhillips, Diamondback Energy, Inc. FANG and Exxon Mobil Corporation XOM have a significant presence in upstream operations, exposing their business models to crude price volatility. Diamondback Energy has a strong footprint in the Permian Basin with approximately 1,097,846 gross acres (869,036 net acres) as of Dec. 31, 2025. With high-quality, geographically diversified asset portfolios, ExxonMobil has its advantaged assets in the Permian Basin and offshore Guyana. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced on Tuesday that it will leave OPEC and OPEC+ on May 1. It's a meaningful blow to the cartel of oil-producing nations that effectively control the global oil market by setting supply quotas for its members. The decision comes after fellow OPEC member Iran attacked it with missiles and drones, while also choking off its ability to export oil through the Strait of Hormuz.

A big blow to OPEC
The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) formed in 1960 to "coordinate and unify the petroleum policies among member countries." OPEC had five founding members -- Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela -- and has grown over the years to its current group of a dozen countries. The UAE joined its ranks in 1967. It will now exit the group on May 1. It joins several other countries that have left the group over the years, including Qatar (2019) and Angola (2024). The UAE is also leaving OPEC+, a group of 10 non-member nations -- including Russia, Mexico, and Oman -- that work with OPEC to coordinate supply.
The UAE's decision to leave OPEC is a major blow to the group. It's currently the third-largest producer behind Saudi Arabia and Iraq. It has the capacity to produce nearly 4.9 million barrels of oil per day, though its actual output has remained below that level due to OPEC output quotas.
The UAE decided to exit OPEC following a comprehensive review of its production output and future capacity. It believes that leaving OPEC is in its best national interests. The country plans to act responsibly by gradually bringing new production capacity online in alignment with demand and market conditions. However, the move will take the handcuffs off the UAE's oil industry, enabling the country to increase production as it sees fit. That could put some downward pressure on oil prices in the future as OPEC will no longer have a say in how much oil the UAE produces.
The UAE's way forward
The UAE, through its national oil company, ADNOC, has been investing heavily to increase its production capacity. It set a target to reach 5 million barrels per day by 2027, three years ahead of its initial target. The country believes it could increase production to 6 million barrels per day if the market required more output. That would be about 6% of total global demand, making the UAE the fourth-largest global producer behind the U.S., Saudi Arabia, and Russia.
The UAE and ADNOC aren't going it alone. They partner with several leading global energy companies. For example, ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM) is one of the largest U.S. investors in the country, through joint ventures with ADNOC and others. Exxon's assets in the UAE and Qatar currently comprise 20% of its global production capacity. That has been an issue this year as supply disruptions due to the war impacted its first-quarter production by 6%. However, Exxon could benefit from the UAE's decision to leave OPEC, as it could increase production to support ADNOC and other partners.
Occidental Petroleum (NYSE: OXY) also operates in the UAE. The company has a joint venture with ADNOC on Al Hosn Gas, one of the largest gas developments in the Middle East. Occidental also holds the rights to about 2.5 million acres in the country, which hold several exploration blocks. In 2023, Occidental started producing oil from Onshore Block 3. Additionally, Occidental supplies gas to markets in the UAE through Dolphin Energy, which transports gas produced in Qatar to the UAE and Oman. Occidental should also benefit from the UAE's decision to leave OPEC, as it could open more investment opportunities in the country.
A major development
The UAE's decision to leave OPEC could have a major impact on the oil market. The group will no longer control the UAE's output, enabling it to increase production as it sees fit. That could drive oil prices lower in the future. Meanwhile, the decision could provide more production growth opportunities for U.S. oil companies, including Exxon and Occidental Petroleum, benefiting those oil stocks in the long run.

This week is one of the most notable on the stock market's calendar this spring -- we are now deep into earnings season, with more than 900 companies stepping up to the podium to announce their quarterly results.
Among them are some of the biggest and most consequential companies central to critical investing themes. Several earnings reports filed this week could be market-moving.

Here are eight companies reporting earnings that you should be keeping an eye on this week.
Robinhood Markets
Robinhood Markets (NASDAQ: HOOD) is an interesting fintech company that revolutionized investing for many. Through its easy-to-use app, commission-free stock trading, and access to cryptocurrencies and prediction markets, Robinhood has been one of the best fintech stocks in the last year. Shares over the last 12 months are up 70%.
Robinhood reports earnings after the closing bell April 28. While it's likely that a slowdown in cryptocurrency trading -- thanks to a drop in those markets -- will weigh on earnings, investors should also be looking at growth in prediction markets. Robinhood previously disclosed that event contract trading reached 3.4 billion contracts in January alone.
The major AI hyperscalers
April 29 will be a huge day for any investor who is involved in technology and the growth of artificial intelligence. Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL), Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META), Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), and Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) are all scheduled to post their quarterly earnings.
Three months ago, these four companies rocked the market when they announced plans to spend $700 billion combined this year on AI infrastructure. The spending -- much of it on powerful semiconductors -- raised many questions about whether these companies were investing too much in AI and whether they would be able to realize returns over the next several quarters. The companies are increasing their capital expenditure budgets by more than 60% from 2025.
The major issue is free cash flow -- all four of these Magnificent Seven members have enjoyed strong cash flow over the years, but those numbers have been dropping as they increase AI investment. Look for all four companies to acknowledge how much they've spent on capex over the last three months, how much they expect to spend for the rest of the year, and take note of free cash flow numbers when they post their earnings on April 29.
Also, remember that any slowdown in capex will adversely affect chipmakers such as Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices, and Broadcom.
Apple
Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) is another Magnificent Seven stock, but its story differs from its peers'. When Apple reports its earnings on April 30, the biggest thing to look at is the Apple 17 series sales numbers from the line that came out last year. Its iPhone sales jumped 23% year over year in the most recent quarter, and investors will want that uptick to continue.
Apple also saw strong sales in China in the last quarter, with revenue of $25.52 billion rising 37% from a year ago. China is a critical market for Apple, but the company also faces more competition from Chinese-made phones.
Also of note is Apple's CEO transition, as longtime chief executive Tim Cook will become chairman of the board in September to make way for incoming CEO John Ternus.
The big oil companies
The Iran war and ongoing difficulties in moving oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz have roiled the oil markets, pushing oil to $100 per barrel -- and there have been times in which it's been much higher. It's against that backdrop that two major oil companies, ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM) and Chevron (NYSE: CVX), will report earnings on May 1.
For both companies, the rising price of oil could bring mammoth profits, which is why their stocks have jumped about 25% so far this year. But this is the first earnings report for either company since the Iran war began in late February, so management commentary and the companies' forecasts will be closely watched.
