Exxon Mobil Corporation engages in the exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas in the United States and internationally. It operates through Upstream, Energy Products, Chemical Products, and Specialty Products segments. The Upstream segment explores for and produces crude oil and natural gas. The Energy Products segment offers fuels, aromatics, and catalysts, as well as licensing services. It sells its products under the Exxon, Esso, and Mobil brands. The Chemical Products segment manufactures and markets petrochemicals including olefins, polyolefins, and intermediates. The Specialty Products segment offers performance products, including lubricants, basestocks, waxes, synthetics, elastomers, and resins. The company also involves in the manufacturing, trade, transport, and sale of crude oil, natural gas, petroleum products, petrochemicals, and other specialty products; and pursuit lower-emission business opportunities, including carbon capture and storage, hydrogen, lower-emission fuels, and lithium. Exxon Mobil Corporation was founded in 1870 and is based in Spring, Texas.

ExxonMobil appears financially stable, but the market is already pricing in significantly more than current fundamental metrics justify. On valuation multiples, the picture is rather stretched: P/E, P/S, and P/B are above the industry median, while P/FCF is especially high, indicating an expensive valuation relative to the cash flow generated. At the same time, leverage looks like a strength: debt/equity is significantly below the industry median, and debt in absolute terms is moderate and does not appear to be a growing concern over the year. On the other hand, liquidity is not ideal: the quick ratio and current ratio are below comfortable levels, and the cash position has declined compared with previous periods, limiting the margin of safety. Profitability is also mixed: ROA and ROI are close to industry benchmarks, but ROE, return on tangible equity, and all key margins are below the median and have been gradually deteriorating over the years. This is especially important because at a high valuation, investors usually expect either stronger earnings growth or higher capital efficiency. Earnings and operating income trends over recent periods are rather weak: net income and operating income are noticeably below peak levels, and net profit margin and operating margin are declining. Revenue remains very large and broadly stable, which supports the scale of the business, but on its own it does not offset pressure on margins and cash returns. Dividend yield has decreased, so the dividend argument is weaker now than before, although the fact that dividends are still being paid remains a positive for shareholders. Overall, this is not a story of deep deterioration, but rather of a mature business with a solid balance sheet, yet without any clear fundamental acceleration. For a target valuation, this implies a moderate cooling of expectations: the strong balance sheet and the scale of the business support the value, but expensive multiples and weakening efficiency do not justify an aggressive upward revision of the forecast.

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Wednesday closed down -1.52%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) closed down -2.19%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed down -2.06%. September E-mini S&P futures (ESU26) fell -1.59%, and September E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQU26) fell -2.23%.
Stock indexes retreated on Wednesday, with the S&P 500 sliding to a 1-month low and the Nasdaq 100 sinking to a 3-month low. Chipmakers and AI infrastructure stocks sold off on Wednesday, leading the overall market lower. Also, heightened geopolitical risks are weighing on stocks as crude prices surged, and bond yields jumped when President Trump said the US will “hit Iran hard” after a recent attack from Iran that targeted a US base in Jordan.

Stocks whipsawed Wednesday afternoon and briefly erased their losses before selling off again into the close after the FOMC kept interest rates unchanged in a hawkish Fed hold. Three Fed members dissented in favor of a quarter-point rate hike, and Fed Chair Warsh said the Fed is committed to “deliver price stability.” The 10-year T-note yield rose +4 bp to 4.64%.
Earnings results from Microsoft and Meta Platforms after Wednesday’s close will be looked at to see whether the vast spending behind the buildout of artificial intelligence can deliver adequate returns.
The FOMC, as expected, kept the fed funds target range unchanged at 3.50% to 3.75% in a 9-3 vote, with Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack, Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari, and Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan voting for a quarter-point rate hike.
The post-FOMC statement said, "Economic activity is expanding at a solid pace despite elevated uncertainty that owes, in part, to the conflict in the Middle East," adding that "productivity growth and capital investment are strong." Inflation remains elevated "in part reflecting supply shocks that have driven price increases in certain sectors, including energy."
Fed Chair Warsh said, "The economy is showing impressive resilience" even with recent shocks and policymakers "will not hesitate to act" if inflation remains elevated.
Sep WTI crude oil prices (CLU26) jumped by more than +6% on Wednesday as the recent lull in hostilities came to an abrupt end after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it targeted a US airbase and command center in Jordan with ballistic missiles. The IRGC also claimed to have hit and halted three tankers attempting to transit through the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, the US and Saudi Arabia launched a joint attack on "Iran-aligned terrorists" in Iraq after the IRGC directed them to target US forces and Saudi energy infrastructure.
Tensions remain high in the Middle East as the US maintains its blockade of Iranian oil shipments in the Persian Gulf. Also, diplomatic attempts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz appear to be at an impasse. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Gharibabadi said Oman's proposal for a route through the Strait of Hormuz, with 50% under Iran's control and 50% under Oman's, would not address Iran's concerns and that the inbound passage and part of the outbound channel must be entirely under Iran's control.
US MBA mortgage applications fell -6.4% in the week ended July 24, with the purchase mortgage sub-index down -3.6% and the refinancing mortgage sub-index down -9.9%. The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage rose +7 bp to an 11.5-month high of 6.76% from 6.69% the prior week.
The outlook for strong Q2 earnings, which continue this week, is a bullish factor for stocks. The markets are awaiting results from a raft of megacap technology companies this week, including Microsoft and Meta Platforms today, and Amazon.com and Apple on Thursday. Forecasts compiled by Bloomberg Intelligence suggest Q2 earnings may increase by +23%, close to Q1’s blowout earnings of +30%, which was more than double the +12% analysts had expected. AI spending is expected to account for most of earnings, with AI infrastructure stocks set to contribute nearly 60% of the S&P 500's earnings-per-share growth in Q2. So far, earnings results have been positive, with 87% of the 216 S&P 500 companies that have reported Q2 earnings beating estimates, according to Bloomberg data.
The markets are discounting a 56% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on September 15-16.
Overseas stock markets settled mixed on Wednesday. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed down -0.65%. China's Shanghai Composite rebounded from a 1-week low and closed up +0.40%. Japan's Nikkei-225 Stock Average fell to a 2.25-month low and closed down -1.49%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU6) on Wednesday closed down -1 tick. The 10-year T-note yield rose +3.3 bp to 4.639%. T-notes were under pressure from Wednesday’s +6% surge in crude oil prices, which raises inflation expectations and is hawkish for Fed policy. Also, the FOMC's hawkish hold on interest rates weighed on T-note prices after three Fed members dissented in favor of a 25 bp rate hike, and Fed Chair Warsh said policymakers "will not hesitate to act" if inflation remains elevated.
European government bond yields moved higher on Wednesday. The 10-year German bund yield rose +5.6 bp to 3.160%. The 10-year UK gilt yield rose +9.2 bp to 5.036%.
The German Jun import price index eased to 6.1% y/y from 6.8% y/y in May.
The markets are discounting a 90% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at their next policy meeting on September 10.
US Stock Movers
Chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks fell sharply on Wednesday, weighing on the broader market. The Philadelphia Stock Exchange Semiconductor Index ($SOX) dropped to a 2.5-month low and closed down more than -5%. Nebius Group NV (NBIS) closed down more than -12% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100, and KLA Corp (KLAC) closed down more than -10%. In addition, Sandisk (SNDK) and NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI) closed down more than -7%, and Marvell Technology (MRVL) and Lam Research (LRCX) closed down more than -6%. Trucking and freight companies were under pressure on Wednesday amid soaring crude oil prices. ArcBest (ARCB) closed down more than -5%, and FedEx Freight Holding (FDXF) closed down more than -4%. Also, Saia Inc (SAIA) closed down more than -3%, and Old Dominion Freight Line (ODFL) and XPO Inc (XPO) closed down more than -2%. In addition, Marten Transport Ltd (MRTN) closed down more than -1%.
Most software stocks rose on Wednesday as investors rotated out of chipmakers into software. Intuit (INTU) closed up more than +6%, and Adobe Systems (ADBE), Datadog (DDOG), and Workday (WDAY) closed up more than +5%. Also, Atlassian Corp (TEAM) and ServiceNow (NOW) closed up more than +4%, and Salesforce (CRM) closed up more than +3% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials. In addition, Autodesk (ADSK) closed up more than +3%, and Thomson Reuters (TRI) closed up more than +2%.

Lennox International (LII) closed down more than -20% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q2 net sales of $1.55 billion, weaker than the consensus of $1.56 billion.
Vertiv Holdings (VRT) closed down more than -17% after reporting Q2 net sales of $3.27 billion, below the consensus of $3.39 billion.
Masco Corp (MAS) closed down more than -11% after reporting Q2 net sales of $1.99 billion, weaker than the consensus of $2.08 billion.

Sep WTI crude oil prices (CLU26) jumped by more than +7% today as the recent lull in hostilities came to an abrupt end after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it targeted a US airbase and command center in Jordan with ballistic missiles. The IRGC also claimed to have hit and halted three tankers attempting to transit through the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, the US and Saudi Arabia launched a joint attack on "Iran-aligned terrorists" in Iraq after the IRGC directed them to target US forces and Saudi energy infrastructure.
Tensions remain high in the Middle East as the US maintains its blockade of Iranian oil shipments in the Persian Gulf. Also, diplomatic attempts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz appear to be at an impasse. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Gharibabadi said Oman's proposal for a route through the Strait of Hormuz, with 50% under Iran's control and 50% under Oman's, would not address Iran's concerns and that the inbound passage and part of the outbound channel must be entirely under Iran's control.
US MBA mortgage applications fell -6.4% in the week ended July 24, with the purchase mortgage sub-index down -3.6% and the refinancing mortgage sub-index down -9.9%. The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage rose +7 bp to an 11.5-month high of 6.76% from 6.69% the prior week.
The outlook for strong Q2 earnings, which continue this week, is a bullish factor for stocks. The markets are awaiting results from a raft of megacap technology companies this week, including Microsoft and Meta Platforms today, and Amazon.com and Apple on Thursday. Forecasts compiled by Bloomberg Intelligence suggest Q2 earnings may increase by +23%, close to Q1’s blowout earnings of +30%, which was more than double the +12% analysts had expected. AI spending is expected to account for most of earnings, with AI infrastructure stocks set to contribute nearly 60% of the S&P 500's earnings-per-share growth in Q2. So far, earnings results have been positive, with 87% of the 216 S&P 500 companies that have reported Q2 earnings beating estimates, according to Bloomberg data.
The markets are discounting a 34% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the conclusion of today’s FOMC meeting.
Overseas stock markets are mixed today. The Euro Stoxx 50 is down -0.73%. China's Shanghai Composite rebounded from a 1-week low and closed up +0.40%. Japan's Nikkei-225 Stock Average fell to a 2.25-month low and closed down -1.49%.

Stocks Pressured by Renewed US-Iran Hostilities

ExxonMobil (NYSE:XOM) plans to release its second-quarter financial results before the market opens on Friday, July 31. The oil giant has already hinted that it will report windfall profits during the period, driven by the war-fueled surge in oil prices.

A look back at the last quarter
ExxonMobil reported its first-quarter financial results in early May. The oil giant delivered mixed results. While it beat analysts' expectations ($1.16 per share of adjusted earnings compared to the $1.00 consensus estimate), its net income declined significantly despite higher oil prices. The company posted $4.2 billion of profits, its lowest level since the first quarter of 2021, down from $6.5 billion in the fourth quarter.
The culprit was war-driven supply disruptions, which prevented Exxon from settling financial hedges with the associated physical shipments. This unfavorable timing effect cost it $3.9 billion during the quarter. However, the company expected the hedging-related paper losses to unwind over the next few months as supply disruptions in the Middle East eased.
What to expect in the second quarter
ExxonMobil provided investors with a preliminary glimpse at its second-quarter financial results earlier this month. It indicated that its second-quarter earnings should be about $5 billion higher than the first quarter, driven by higher oil prices and improving refining margins.
The company expects its upstream earnings to rise by about $1.6 billion at the midpoint, driven by improved production and strong oil prices (the global oil benchmark Brent averaged $96.68 per barrel, up 23% compared to the first quarter). Meanwhile, its refining earnings could grow by about $2.6 billion, driven by timing effects. While the company will likely continue to face some timing impacts due to ongoing Persian Gulf supply disruptions and higher oil prices, the unwinding of prior timing impacts should significantly boost its second-quarter earnings.
Meanwhile, the company’s adjusted earnings should be even stronger. Analysts expect Exxon to report $15.7 billion of adjusted earnings during the second quarter, nearly double the first-quarter’s level.
The fuel to soar, depending on oil prices
ExxonMobil should report strong second-quarter results this week. That should give its stock the fuel to soar.
However, there’s just one potential wrinkle: oil prices. Crude has been extremely volatile this year. Brent oil was over $100 a barrel earlier this week after the U.S. and Iran resumed fighting. But it has cooled off considerably after the fighting stopped, and was recently around $85 a barrel. Oil could continue falling if there’s a peace deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, or it could rally sharply if fighting resumes.
That near-term volatility aside, ExxonMobil can thrive in the long term either way. The oil giant is in the middle of a multi-year transformational strategy to bolster profitability, which includes a major structural cost-savings program and heavy investment in developing its advantaged assets (lowest-cost and highest-margin). This strategy will drive double-digit annual earnings and cash flow growth through 2030, assuming the same oil prices and margins as in 2024. Further, it would enable the oil giant to generate $145 billion in cumulative surplus cash at an average Brent price of $65 a barrel. So, even if Exxon stock doesn’t soar after earnings due to lower oil prices, it has the fuel to deliver robust total returns in the coming years at much lower oil prices. That makes it a great long-term investment right now.

But there is clearly a bit more apprehension in the market these days, with investors appearing to be more concerned about high valuations and a possible bubble related to artificial intelligence (AI).
Many investors have also been pivoting into safer stocks that pay dividends. Three dividend stocks that have vastly outperformed the market this year are ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM), UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH), and Texas Instruments (NASDAQ: TXN). Here's how well they've been doing, and why they can still be great buys right now.

ExxonMobil
Shares of oil and gas giant ExxonMobil are up around 29% this year and close to 40% over the past 12 months. As commodity prices have been rising, investors have been loading up on the industry leader, expecting it to benefit significantly from higher oil prices, just as it has in the past.
That excitement is evident in its valuation: the stock trades at only 14 times future earnings (based on analyst expectations). That's a low multiple, given that the average S&P 500 stock trades at about 21 times its projected future profits. This modest valuation could lead to more upside for the stock, especially if oil prices remain high.
Exxon can be volatile due to the changes in oil prices, but overall, it's been an exceptional dividend stock to own, as it has raised its payout for decades. That gives investors plenty of incentive to just buy and hold. Currently, the stock yields 2.7%, and that would be higher if not for its recent run-up in value.
UnitedHealth Group
Health insurance giant UnitedHealth is another top dividend growth stock to own. In previous years, it has struggled with rising costs as higher utilization rates weighed on its financials. But now, with more normalcy in the healthcare sector and UnitedHealth leveraging AI to its advantage, it's been able to get a better handle on costs, and its financials have been improving.
The company has gone from routinely missing expectations to now beating them again. Investors, in turn, have been buying up the stock given its stronger results, and UnitedHealth is up 28% thus far in 2026. It's still not near the highs of more than $600 that it reached a few years ago, but it's been making some solid gains of late.
Currently, it yields 2.2%, which is about double the S&P 500 average of 1.1%. And over the past five years, it has increased its payout by an impressive 60%, giving investors plenty of incentive to buy and hold the healthcare stock for the long haul.
Texas Instruments
The hottest stock on this list has been Texas Instruments, which is up around 62% this year. The semiconductor company has been experiencing significant growth of late, giving both dividend and growth investors a reason to invest in its business. Revenue of $5.5 billion in its most recent quarter (which ended on June 30) was up 23% year over year, while net income of just under $2 billion rose by 53%.
Texas Instruments makes embedded chips that serve many different needs, including automotive and industrial sectors. Demand from data centers has been particularly strong with tech companies investing heavily in AI, and that's been a big reason the stock has been such a hot buy this year and why its financials have looked impressive.
In addition to some solid growth opportunities, the stock also makes for an attractive dividend investment, yielding just over 2%. Its current quarterly dividend rate of $1.42 has grown by 39% in five years, from the $1.02 per share it was paying in 2021.

The Zacks Consensus Estimate for second-quarter earnings is pegged at $3.87 per share, implying a surge of almost 136% from the year-ago reported number. It has witnessed one downward estimate revision in the past seven days. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for second-quarter revenues is currently pegged at $95.8 billion, suggesting a roughly 18% rise from the year-ago actuals.

In its latest 8-K SEC filings, XOM stated that it is likely to see a sequential improvement in the June quarter upstream earnings by $3.5 billion to $3.9 billion due to an increase in liquid prices.
To have an idea of how oil prices behaved in the June quarter, let's analyze the commodity prices from the data provided by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (“EIA”). The average Cushing, OK, WTI spot prices for April, May and June of this year were $100.32 per barrel, $102.13 per barrel and $84.81 per barrel, respectively, per EIA data. Commodity prices were $63.54 per barrel, $62.17 per barrel and $68.17 per barrel, respectively, in April, May and June of 2025, according to the EIA.
A constructive oil-price backdrop due to the Iran war aided the company’s exploration and production businesses in the June quarter of this year, similar to BP plc BP and Chevron Corporation CVX.
XOM added that stronger margins from its Energy Products segment are likely to have provided a $2.0 billion to $2.4 billion sequential benefit.
XOM’s Price Performance & Valuation
XOM's stock has jumped 37.2% over the past year, outperforming the industry’s 35.6% surge. BP has gained 28.4% over the same time frame, while Chevron has rallied 21%.

While XOM’s stock price has outperformed the industry, the company appears relatively overvalued. The company's current trailing 12-month enterprise value/earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (EV/EBITDA) is 10.23x, reflecting that it is trading at a premium compared with the industry average of 6.71x. Both BP and CVX are valued lower at 3.15x and 9.85x, respectively.
Investment Thesis of XOM
ExxonMobil has a massive footprint in the Permian, the most prolific oil and gas play in the United States, and offshore Guyana. In the Permian, the integrated giant has been employing lightweight proppant technology and hence is capable of boosting its well recoveries by up to as much as 20%.
According to the data from the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, the shut-in price for existing wells in the Midland, a sub-basin of the Permian, is $42 per barrel. For Delaware, another sub-basin, the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas estimated the price at $34 per barrel.
With West Texas Intermediate (“WTI”) crude oil trading above the $80-per-barrel mark, significantly above the shut-in prices, it makes sense for XOM to continue production in the wells. Although the upstream business seems lucrative now, the high oil price is hurting the company’s refining operations, since the input costs have jumped. Also, with a significant proportion of earnings being generated from upstream activities, the company’s business is highly vulnerable to the volatility in commodity prices.
Last Word
Given the backdrop, it might not be wise for investors to bet on the integrated energy giant ahead of earnings because of its overvaluation. However, those who have already invested may hold on to the stock.

Management reaffirmed full-year 2026 production guidance of 3.98-4.10 million barrels of oil-equivalent per day (BOE/d), while highlighting that second-quarter production was expected to exceed the first quarter despite planned maintenance. Operations at TCO were running above 1 million BOE/d day, Gorgon and Wheatstone LNG were operating at full rates, and Permian production remained above 1 million BOE/d. These factors, combined with stronger oil and gas prices, could have lifted upstream earnings even after accounting for an estimated 100,000-150,000 BOE per day turnaround impact. Consequently, the Zacks Consensus Estimate for the second-quarter upstream segment is currently pegged at a profit of $8.3 billion compared to the year-ago income of $2.7 billion.
Chevron's downstream business likely received support from improved refining margins and higher utilization across its global refining network. Management indicated that U.S. refineries achieved record crude throughput, while Asia refinery utilization was expected to remain around 80% during the second quarter. The company also emphasized growing integration benefits by directing more equity crude into its refining system, helping capture additional value across the supply chain. Historical trends further suggest that downstream earnings have frequently exceeded expectations, with the segment posting positive earnings surprises in several recent quarters, including 36.5% in first-quarter 2026 and 16.7% in second-quarter 2025. According to the Zacks Consensus Estimate, downstream income is expected to jump to some $4 billion from just $737 million in second-quarter 2025.
But on a somewhat bearish note, Chevron's second-quarter earnings could have faced pressure from elevated investment spending alongside softer downstream sales volumes. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for second-quarter 2026 capital expenditures is pegged at about $4.7 billion, well above the $3.7 billion reported in the year-ago quarter. At the same time, consensus mark for worldwide refined product sales of roughly 2.7 million barrels per day is slightly below the second-quarter 2025 levels.
Updates From Chevron’s Global Peers: ExxonMobil and Shell
Rival ExxonMobil Holdings XOM heads into its second-quarter earnings with stronger oil prices expected to have been the biggest driver of results. ExxonMobil estimates that higher liquids prices alone could have lifted earnings by about $3.5-$3.9 billion from the prior quarter. ExxonMobil also expects better refining, chemicals and specialty product margins to have provided an additional boost. These positives are likely to have outweighed production disruptions linked to the Middle East conflict, although management has cautioned that operational shutdowns and supply interruptions will have partly offset the benefits.
Meanwhile, European oil major Shell plc SHEL has outlined a mixed but improving outlook. Shell expects lower gas production because of disruptions in Qatar linked to the Middle East conflict, but stronger gas trading should help offset much of that weakness. Shell is also benefiting from improved refining and chemicals margins, refinery utilization near full capacity and a recovery in working capital, all of which should support cash flow. While geopolitical risks remain, the company's diversified operations provide several earnings drivers beyond production volumes.

Shares of Chevron have gone up 11% in the past six-month period compared with the broader Zacks Energy sector’s growth of 11.7%. Shares of XOM have gained 10.1%, while SHEL stock has gone up 11.5%.

FPL is leading the charge to power large loads in Florida
Large power users, such as data centers, are turning directly to the source to meet their power needs. They're increasingly signing power purchase agreements (PPAs) with electric utilities and competitive power producers to secure future electricity.
Many data center developers are making the strategic decision to build new facilities in Florida due to its favorable business climate and FPL's ability to meet their power needs. FPL currently has about 21 gigawatts (GW) of interest from large-load customers, such as hyperscale data centers that value speed to market, reliability, and competitive power pricing. The company is in active discussions with 12 GW of capacity that it believes it could start service as soon as 2028. Few electric utilities have the scale and financial resources to support that level of near-term demand. For perspective, the five largest electric generation owners in the U.S., excluding NextEra, have between 37 and 56 GW of operational capacity, compared to NextEra's 80 GW.
NextEra's data center hub strategy can meet developers' needs
NextEra's energy resources segment is also capitalizing on surging AI data center power demand. The company is bringing its Duane Arnold nuclear power plant back online to support the surging power needs of Alphabet's (NASDAQ: GOOG)(NASDAQ: GOOGL) Google. The company expects that facility to be fully operational by early 2029. NextEra is also building new renewable energy, storage, and gas-fired power capacity to support other utilities and data center customers, including Google.
What sets NextEra Energy apart from other utilities is its data center hub strategy. Data center developers don't just need a lot of power; they require speed, certainty, and scalability, which align with NextEra's strengths. It's one of the few companies that can support these customers with a full suite of solutions, including renewables and battery storage, gas-fired generation, and potentially nuclear in the future.
The company is currently developing 30 potential data center hubs in the U.S. and anticipates that number will rise to 40 by year-end. NextEra's base case is that it will develop 15 GW of data center hubs by 2035, with an upside case of 30+ GW. It's currently working with Google to develop multiple data center campuses across the country. By working directly with Google, NextEra is helping a leading AI player build out crucial infrastructure. It's also working with ExxonMobil to develop a low-carbon, gas-fired data center power project.
An acquisition-driven boost
NextEra Energy is already a leader in the utility sector, making it a top player in the AI power race. However, it has grander ambitions. It agreed to combine with fellow utility Dominion Energy earlier this year to create the world's largest regulated electric utility business. The combined company would be the world leader in renewables and battery storage, the top U.S. player in gas generation, and the country's second-largest nuclear energy producer. It would also be a leader in total U.S. power generation and annual capital spending.
The combined company would have over 130 GW of large-load opportunities in its pipeline, more than double its current combined generation capacity (110 GW). That backlog would help support more than 9% compound annual earnings-per-share growth through 2035, with expectations of extending that pace through at least 2032. That's an acceleration from the more than 8% compound annual growth rate NextEra Energy currently expects to deliver as a stand-alone company, which is already faster than most other utilities.
The leader in AI power
NextEra Energy is the undisputed leader in AI power among utilities. It has a significant pipeline of large-load opportunities in Florida and the rest of the country. Meanwhile, it would become an even bigger player once it closes the Dominion Energy deal. Its combination of scale and growth makes it the top utility stock to buy to capitalize on the AI power boom.

NextEra Energy Is Becoming the Utility Sector's Biggest AI Power Bet -- Here Are the Numbers That Prove It

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Monday closed up +0.02%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) closed up +0.51%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed down -0.32%. September E-mini S&P futures (ESU26) rose +0.02%, and September E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQU26) fell -0.33%.
Stock indexes settled mixed on Monday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average posting a 1-week high and the Nasdaq 100 falling to a 2.5-month low. The weakness in chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks on Monday weighed on the Nasdaq 100 and limited gains in the broader market. Investors rotated out of semiconductor and AI-infrastructure stocks on Monday and into beaten-down sectors, such as software.

Stocks initially jumped on Monday after the US and Iran held off on attacks for a third straight day, easing geopolitical risks, pushing crude oil prices sharply lower, and helping lift global stock and bond markets. On Sunday, Mike Waltz, US ambassador to the United Nations, said the US is giving diplomacy “some space.” The plunge in crude oil prices on Monday knocked the 10-year T-note yield down -4 bp to 4.64%.
Monday’s US economic news showed strength in the economy and is supportive of stocks after US Jun capital goods new orders nondefense ex-aircraft, a proxy for capital spending, rose +0.9% m/m, stronger than expectations of +0.7% m/m.
Sep WTI crude oil prices (CLU26) plunged by more than -7% on Monday as tensions eased in the Middle East after the US held off against further airstrikes on Iran for a third straight day and Iran signaled it was refraining from any retaliation as it held negotiations with Oman over the Strait of Hormuz.
However, tensions remain high in the Middle East as the US maintains its blockade of Iranian oil shipments in the Persian Gulf and President Trump raised the possibility of intensified action against Iran. Also, Houthi militants in Yemen claimed to have struck facilities linked to Saudi Aramco in the Red Sea port towns of Jizan and Yanbu on Saturday. Yanbu, the western end of the East-West pipeline, has become Saudi’s key crude export outlet since the Strait of Hormuz has effectively been shut off by the war. Jizan is home to a refinery and export terminal along the Red Sea.
The outlook for strong Q2 earnings, which continue this week, is a bullish factor for stocks. The markets are waiting for results from a raft of megacap technology companies this week, including Amazon.com, Meta Platforms, and Microsoft. Forecasts compiled by Bloomberg Intelligence suggest Q2 earnings may increase by +23%, close to Q1’s blowout earnings of +30%, which was more than double the +12% analysts had expected. AI spending is expected to account for most of earnings, with AI infrastructure stocks set to contribute nearly 60% of the S&P 500's earnings-per-share growth in Q2. So far, earnings results have been positive, with 86% of the 135 S&P 500 companies that have reported Q2 earnings beating estimates, according to Bloomberg data.
The markets are discounting a 38% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on Tue/Wed.
Overseas stock markets settled higher on Monday. The Euro Stoxx 50 climbed to a 2.5-week high and closed up +0.02%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +1.15% on Friday. Japan's Nikkei-225 Stock Average closed up +0.50%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU6) on Monday closed up +8 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield fell -3.6 bp to 4.641%. T-notes moved higher amid Monday’s -7% plunge in crude oil prices, which eased inflation expectations. The 10-year breakeven inflation rate fell to a 1-month low of 2.201% on Monday. Weak demand for the Treasury’s $70 billion auction of 5-year T-notes limited gains in T-notes as the auction had a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.28, below the 10-auction average of 2.35 and the lowest in 3.75 years.
European government bond yields moved lower on Monday. The 10-year German bund yield fell -3.9 bp to 3.133%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell -3.5 bp to 4.997%.
The German Jul IFO business confidence index rose +0.9 to a 5-month high of 86.6, stronger than expectations of 86.0.
ECB Governing Council member Peter Kazimir said "he remains of the view that the ECB will have to raise interest rates at least one more time" to ensure that inflation risks don't spin out of control.
The markets are discounting an 88% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on September 10.
US Stock Movers
Chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks retreated on Monday, weighing on the broader market. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) fell to a 1-week low and closed down more than -2%. Sandisk (SNDK) closed down more than -12% to lead losers in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100, and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and ASML Holding NV (ASML) closed down more than -5%. Also, Western Digital (WDC), Lam Research (LRCX), and Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX) closed down more than -4%, and Micron Technology (MU), Applied Materials (AMAT), and KLA Corp (KLAC) closed down more than -3%. In addition, Marvell Technology (MRVL) closed down more than -2%.
Energy producers and service providers moved lower on Monday amid the -7% decline in crude oil prices. Devon Energy (DVN), Diamondback Energy (FANG), and Occidental Petroleum (OXY) closed down more than -4%, and APA Corp (APA), ConocoPhillips (COP), and Haliburton (HAL) closed down more than -3%. Also, Chevron (CVX) closed down more than -2%, and ExxonMobil Holdings (XOM) and SLB Ltd (SLB) closed down more than -1%.
Software stocks rallied on Monday, a supportive factor for the overall market. Atlassian (TEAM) closed up more than +10%, and Workday (WDAY) closed up more than +9% to lead gainers in the S&P 500. Also, Thomson Reuters (TRI) closed up more than +8%, and Autodesk (ADSK) and Palantir Technologies (PLTR) closed up more than +7%. In addition, ServiceNow (NOW) closed up more than +6%, and Salesforce (CRM) closed up more than +6% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials. Finally, Adobe (ADBE) closed up more than +5%, Oracle (ORCL) closed up more than +4%, Intuit (INTU) and Datadog (DDOG) closed up by more than +2%, and Microsoft (MSFT) closed up by more than +1%.
Airline stocks and cruise line operators moved higher on Monday after crude oil prices plunged more than -7%. American Airlines Group (AAL), Carnival (CCL), Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH), and Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCL) closed up more than +3%, and Alaska Air Group (ALK) closed up more than +2%. Also, United Airlines Holdings (UAL) and Delta Air Lines (DAL) closed up more than +1%, and Southwest Airlines (LUV) closed up +0.67%.
CH Robinson Worldwide (CHRW) closed down more than -6%, adding to last Friday’s -9% plunge, to lead trucking and freight companies lower after a Dallas jury awarded $604 million in compensatory damages against the company and two other defendants for a verdict related to a trucking accident. Also, FedEx Freight Holding Company (FDXF) and Marten Transport (MRTN) closed down more than -4%, and Arcbest (ARCB) closed down more than -3%. In addition, Old Dominion Freight Line (ODFL), Knight-Swift Transportation (KNX), JB Hunt Transport (JBHT), and XPO Inc (XPO) closed down more than -2%.
MapLight Therapeutics (MPLT) closed down more than -71% after posting results from a mid-stage trial of its experimental therapy to treat schizophrenia, which Stifel said did not meet the “upside case” scenario.
Nvidia (NVDA) closed down more than -4% to lead losers in the Dow Jones Industrials after announcing it had made a “substantial” investment in AI startup Safe Superintelligence.
Forte Biosciences (FBRX) closed up more than +39% after Argenx SE agreed to buy the company for about $2.2 billion, or $77 a share.
D-Wave Quantum (QBTS) closed up more than +20% after Benchmark Company LLC reinstated coverage on the stock with a recommendation of buy and a price target of $30.
IonQ (IONQ) closed up more than +9% after Benchmark Company LLC reinstated coverage on the stock with a recommendation of buy and a price target of $60.
Baker Hughes (BKR) closed up more than +6% after reporting Q2 revenue of $6.74 billion, better than the consensus of $6.51 billion.
Rocket Lab Corp. (RKLB) closed up more than +4% after KGI Securities upgraded the stock to outperform from neutral with a price target of $107.
