Shell plc operates as an energy and petrochemical company Europe, Asia, Oceania, Africa, the United States, and Rest of the Americas. The company operates through Integrated Gas, Upstream, Marketing, Chemicals and Products, and Renewables and Energy Solutions segments. It explores for and extracts crude oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids; markets and transports oil and gas; produces gas-to-liquids fuels and other products; and operates upstream and midstream infrastructure necessary to deliver gas to market. The company also markets and trades natural gas, liquefied natural gas (LNG), crude oil, electricity, carbon-emission rights; and markets and sells LNG as a fuel for heavy-duty vehicles. In addition, it trades in and refines crude oil and other feed stocks, such as low-carbon fuels, lubricants, bitumen, sulphur, gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel, and marine fuel; produces and sells petrochemicals for industrial use; and manages oil sands activities. Further, the company produces base chemicals comprising ethylene, propylene, and aromatics, as well as intermediate chemicals, such as styrene monomer, propylene oxide, solvents, detergent alcohols, ethylene oxide, and ethylene glycol. Additionally, it generates electricity through wind and solar resources; produces and sells hydrogen; and provides electric vehicle charging services. The company was formerly known as Royal Dutch Shell plc and changed its name to Shell plc in January 2022. Shell plc was founded in 1907 and is headquartered in London, the United Kingdom.

Shell looks fundamentally sound: the company generates substantial revenue, profit, and cash flow with a moderate debt burden. On valuation multiples, the stock trades below the industry on P/E, P/S, and P/B, which suggests no obvious overvaluation and leaves room for upward re-rating. P/FCF is around the industry median, so there is no strong discount on free cash flow anymore, but there are also no signs of overheating. Return on capital has improved: ROE, ROA, and ROI have increased noticeably compared with previous periods, and ROI is already above the industry median, which supports the quality of the business. At the same time, profitability remains a weak spot: gross margin, operating margin, and net profit margin are below industry benchmarks, meaning pricing power and cost structure are not ideal. Earnings and operating profit trends over recent periods have been positive, which points to a recovery in operating leverage and supports the valuation. The balance sheet looks comfortable: the current ratio and quick ratio are at acceptable levels, and debt/equity is below the industry median, reducing financial risk. Long-term debt is large in absolute terms, but in relation to equity and assets it appears manageable, with no signs of excessive leverage. Dividend yield has declined compared with previous periods, so the dividend factor is currently less supportive than before. Overall, the fundamentals are moderately positive, but not strong enough to justify aggressively raising the target price: strengths in valuation, liquidity, and earnings growth are partly offset by weak margins and lower dividend attractiveness. For an investor, this means the stock looks more like a quality but not cheap energy name with limited, though still positive, upside potential from re-rating.

A large energy asset in New England is about to change hands, if an agreed-upon new deal ends up closing. Global energy giant Shell (NYSE:SHEL) has signed a deal for one of its subsidiaries to sell the business that owns the Rhode Island State Energy Center (RISEC). The buyer is the sprawling U.S. utility company Constellation Energy (NASDAQ:CEG), and the price is $715 million.
RISEC is the No. 1 electricity-generating facility in its state by output; that, plus the transaction's price tag, makes this deal meaningful. Here's how it'll impact both companies.

Good reasons to own RISEC
That $715 million will be paid entirely in cash by Constellation and is subject to customary purchase price adjustments. Constellation wrote in its press release about the arrangement that the effective net cash outlay is $580 million, due to $135 million in expected first-year tax benefits.
The sale is subject to approval by the relevant regulatory authorities. Both companies said they expect it to close in the first quarter of 2027.
RISEC is a facility powered by natural gas that makes the "juice" with two combustion turbines and a single steam turbine. Its capacity is 609 megawatts of electricity. As a relatively recent construction -- it came onstream in 2002 -- it is efficient, with its combined-cycle operation capturing and reusing heat from the gas turbines to produce additional power. Such a system is notably more efficient than a traditional single-cycle natural gas plant, and its emissions are lower, according to Constellation.
In its press release on the deal, Constellation quoted its CEO, Joe Dominguez, as saying that as the company's business in the New England region expands, "we need a reliable asset that is well-positioned on both the electric grid and the natural gas pipeline system. RISEC checks all of these boxes."
The company expects RISEC to be immediately accretive to its operating profit. It made a point to add that purchasing it won't affect management's goal of executing $5 billion in share repurchases by the end of 2027.
A peak performer
In its own press release on the RISEC sale, Shell simultaneously announced a buy. The subsidiary that (for now) owns RISEC, Shell Energy North America (SENA), has acquired Hunlock Creek Generation, which owns two natural-gas-fired power plants in Pennsylvania. Combined, the pair's generation capacity is 169 megawatts. Shell did not disclose the purchase price.
The company wrote that this deal "secures supply and capacity offtake for SENA in the Mid-Atlantic power grid operated by PJM Interconnection." PJM is the most significant wholesale electricity market and grid operator in the U.S.
One of the two Hunlock assets is a 44-megawatt peaking plant, i.e., a power generation facility that can generate significant electricity on short notice, making it ideal for periods of high demand. What's particularly attractive about such assets is that they operate on the 'capacity market," i.e. they draw revenue simply by a commitment to be available during such peak times. On top of that, they get paid for the electricity they produce in these periods of need.
Like Constellation with RISEC, Shell is expecting Hunlock to be a very productive asset. It wrote that it anticipates this business will exceed the company's benchmark internal rate of return (IRR) for power investments. The company didn't provide detailed guidance on how its latest acquisition might affect the fundamentals.
Powering the future
Both Constellation and Shell are adjusting their U.S. electricity generation portfolios at a time when power demand should rise, in no small part due to the feverish build-out of artificial intelligence (AI) compute capacity in this country. For Constellation, RISEC is a modern and highly productive facility that appears to be essentially plug-and-play -- hence the stated expectation of immediate accretion to its future parent's business. Meanwhile, Shell's take-up of Hunlock feels like an opportunistic buy of an asset that benefits from that two-stream revenue model.
So if I were a shareholder of either company, I'd welcome the news of this little web of deals. After it was announced, Constellation's share price dipped slightly while Shell's moved marginally higher. That's likely because the two companies are large enough that neither buy will make or break their new owners. They're still positive and might even impact their respective fundamentals more than expected, though, so I'd be bullish in both cases.

Shell Just Sold a $715 Million Stake in a Major New England Asset to Constellation Energy. Here's What Investors Need to Know.

Oil and gas supermajor Chevron CVX is benefiting from strong production and Hess buyout synergies. Structural cost reductions have also improved the economics of its massive energy portfolio.
But for investors, the big question is whether Chevron is turning that operating strength into consistently attractive returns. Looking at return on invested capital (ROIC), cash conversion and earnings linearity, we can say that the company is generating plenty of cash, but its returns and earnings consistency leave room for improvement.
The Operating Engine Is Real
In the last reported quarter, Chevron’s worldwide production jumped 20% year over year to a record 4.07 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, powered by the Hess acquisition, Permian growth, and the Gulf of America. On the cost side, Chevron hit $3 billion in annual run-rate structural savings and $1.5 billion in Hess synergies— both six months ahead of schedule. Management is also guiding toward spending 25% less capital per barrel of oil equivalent in 2026 than in 2025.
Put together, Chevron is pumping more oil, spending less to do it, and cutting the capital it needs per barrel going forward.
But Capital Efficiency Hasn’t Kept Pace
Based on our proprietary calculation, Chevron's trailing-12-month ROIC stands at 7.8%, above its own 10-year median of 6.3%, indicating that capital efficiency remains better than its longer-term historical norm.
But the more recent trend is less encouraging. CVX’s ROIC has slipped from a 5-year median of 9.4% to a 3-year median of 8.3% and now stands at 7.8%. At the same time, its current ROIC is below the 8.6% industry median. Close peers like ExxonMobil XOM and Shell SHEL also generate higher ROIC, at 9.2% and 10.2%, respectively.
The production growth and cost discipline are happening, but they haven't yet translated into a sustained improvement in capital efficiency. Part of the disconnect may be the industry's commodity sensitivity. Higher production and lower unit costs can improve the underlying economics, but weaker oil and gas prices can still compress profits and ROIC faster than the capital base adjusts.
If Hess synergies, structural cost cuts, and a lighter capital footprint in U.S. shale keep compounding, ROIC can increase from here. A downturn in commodity prices or slippage on execution could just as easily pull it the other way. The next few quarters of ROIC data will matter more than any single production headline.
The Cash Flow Story Holds Up
If ROIC shows how productively Chevron uses its capital, cash flow conversion shows whether those earnings are turning into real money. And here, the picture is much cleaner.
Chevron’s TTM cash-flow conversion runs at 220.1%, with free-cash-flow conversion at 131.2%, per our proprietary calculations. Both are a bit below their historical medians, but still comfortably strong. In the last reported quarter, Chevron generated $19.7 billion of operating cash flow excluding working capital, $15.4 billion of adjusted free cash flow, and a record $8.4 billion debt paydown.
Chevron is effective at converting profits into cash to reduce debt, fund investments and return capital to shareholders. That helps offset the ROIC concern. Even if capital efficiency is middling now, the balance sheet is getting materially stronger.
Earnings Are Still Uneven
Chevron's earnings also lack consistency. Per our proprietary model, its 10-year EPS linearity is only 30.9%, below the 34.8% industry median and far below the 100% ideal baseline. Meanwhile, 10-year EPS CAGR (on a TTM basis) of 9.5% trails the industry median of 13.2%.
That inconsistency largely comes down to commodity exposure. Chevron's earnings move with oil, gas and refining prices rather than following a steady operational trajectory. Mixed downstream demand and softer energy prices can therefore add further volatility to earnings.
Peers show a similar spread. ExxonMobil's EPS linearity sits at 37.5%, while Shell's at 29.1%, suggesting earnings volatility is a sector-wide feature.
Tying It Together
Chevron's higher production, cost cuts and Hess synergies are improving the business, and the benefits are already showing up in strong cash generation. But the improvement in operations has not yet translated into a similar improvement in ROIC as Chevron's earnings remain tied to the highly cyclical energy market.

From a valuation perspective— in terms of forward price-to-earnings ratio— Chevron is trading at a premium compared with the industry average. The stock is also trading above its five-year mean of 11.81.
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for CVX’s 2026 earnings is pegged at $16.51 per share, indicating 126% year-over-year growth. EPS estimates have been revised upward in the last 60 days.

Shell plc SHEL, the British oil and gas supergiant, stated that it plans to acquire a 30% interest in the Conifer exploration prospect through its subsidiary Shell Offshore. The Conifer prospect in the Gulf of America is operated by BP plc BP, which will retain the remaining 70% stake. In addition, BP has stated that Shell has agreed to purchase a 50% stake in the Tupinambá exploration block in Brazil’s Santos Basin. BP will retain the operatorship ofthe Tupinambá block.
BP Brings Shell on Board to Advance Key Exploration Prospects
BP highlighted that the Gulf of America and Brazil are both important regions for the company. The Santos Basin offshore Brazil is home to some of the largest pre-salt discoveries made by companies like Petrobras. Earlier this year, BP had also mentioned the Bumerangue discovery in Brazil, which could be its largest discoveryin 25 years. Under Brazil’s second Production Sharing Permanent Offer cycle in December 2023, the company secured the Tupinambá block. Drilling operations for the Tupinambá exploration well are anticipated to begin soon.
On the other hand, the Gulf of America has always been central to BP’s upstream portfolio. The company initially secured four offshore leases in the Conifer exploration prospect in August 2023 through Lease Sale 259. Later, BP secured a fifth lease in the deepwater exploration prospect after the BBG-1 Lease Sale. Per the agreement, Shell Offshore Inc. will enter all five leases as a 30% partner, while BP will retain its operatorship. The Conifer exploration well is scheduled to be drilled in 2027.
Partnerships Help Balance Exploration Upside and Capital Risks
The agreements allow BP to retain ownership in both prospects while bringing in an experienced operator to share the risks associated with their development. BP has stated that this arrangement also aligns with its disciplined capital allocation strategy. For Shell, the agreements are beneficial as it enables the company to gain exposure to potentially significant discoveries in two prolific oil-producing regions.

Shell Partners With BP to Expand Deepwater Footprint in Brazil & GoA

Energy stocks are a go-to source for many investors seeking dividend income. The trailing 12-month yield of energy stocks in the S&P 500 is currently over 4%, more than three times higher than the index's overall average of around 1%. However, yields vary within the energy sector. Right now, midstream companies pay better than big oil.
Here's a look at the differing yields and growth profiles of each side of the barrel.

Big oil can pay big dividends
ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM) and Chevron (NYSE: CVX) are two of the world's largest oil companies. They're also leading dividend stocks. Exxon has increased its payment for 43 straight years (fewer than 5% of S&P 500 companies have achieved this), while Chevron has 39 years of annual dividend increases under its belt. Both oil stocks currently offer above-average dividend yields: Chevron's is around 3.5%, while ExxonMobil's is over 2.5%.
The oil giants are in a strong position to continue growing their dividends. Exxon's 2030 plan would see it deliver 13% earnings growth and double-digit cash flow growth, with even higher per-share growth driven by its share repurchase program, assuming constant margins and pricing relative to 2024. Meanwhile, Chevron expects to deliver more than 10% annual free cash flow growth through 2030, assuming oil averages $70 a barrel. Both companies are working to enhance their strategies. Exxon is bidding on Shell's U.S. chemicals assets while Chevron is looking to expand into Iraq. They should have plenty of fuel to continue increasing their high-yielding dividends.
The midstream side of the barrel can pay even better
Most energy midstream companies currently offer even higher yields than those big oil giants. For example, Enterprise Products Partners (NYSE: EPD) currently yields around 5.8%, while Enbridge (NYSE: ENB) yields slightly less at 5.5%. Others in the sector have lower yields, with Williams and Kinder Morgan closer to Exxon and Chevron's range at 2.8% and 3.7%, respectively. Tax complexity can contribute to the higher yields offered by some midstream companies, as Enterprise is a master limited partnership (MLP), while Enbridge is a Canadian corporation.
Many midstream companies have strong dividend growth records. Enbridge has increased its dividend for 31 straight years (in Canadian dollars), while Enterprise has raised its distribution for 28 consecutive years. Both companies should have the fuel to continue growing their payouts. Enterprise currently has $6.5 billion of major capital projects under construction that should enter service through early 2029. Meanwhile, Enbridge has a massive 41 billion Canadian dollars ($29.6 billion) in secured projects in its backlog that it expects to finish through the early 2030s. It recently enhanced its strategy by purchasing Salt Creek Midstream's crude gathering business for $600 million and securing CA$2.7 billion ($1.4 billion) in funding from private equity giants KKR and Apollo to support Westcoast pipeline expansions in Canada.
Verdict: Midstream wins if tax complexity isn't a concern
The energy midstream sector offers higher current yields than big oil, especially among MLPs and Canadian companies. So, if income is your sole aim, and you're fine with dealing with the tax complexities (MLPs send Schedule K-1 Federal tax forms, while there's a 15% withholding tax on Canadian dividends paid on shares held in a regular brokerage account), they're the better side of the barrel to buy right now.

Big Oil vs. Midstream: Which Side of the Barrel Pays Better Right Now?

Over the weekend, the U.S. resumed military strikes on Iran, which hadn't taken place in nearly a month.
The price of oil jumped 2% in response.
Oil price increases have caused the stock prices of Shell and other oil majors to rise.
Shell has natural gas assets in Qatar that have been affected by the war.
The war in Iran, now more than six months old, had seen a lull in fighting since late July. But that all changed over the weekend as the U.S. launched its first known military strikes on the country in a month.
Over the weekend, the U.S. struck two rocket launchers on Iran's Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. claimed that Iran was planning to use the launchers to launch sea mines into the Strait.

In response, Iran fired missiles at U.S. bases in Jordan. Jordanian officials said that their air defense systems successfully intercepted and destroyed all eight of the missiles.

The rekindling of hostilities caused oil prices to rise by 2%, sending benchmark Brent Crude above $90/barrel again. The war has caused maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz to drop to nearly non-existent levels. Only an average of 5 ships a day have been traversing the Strait in August, down from more than 130 per day before the war.
As the war has pushed global oil prices higher, it has also affected the stock prices of the world's largest integrated oil and gas companies, including Shell (NYSE:SHEL), Chevron (NYSE:CVX), and ExxonMobil (NYSE:XOM). Here's how this latest reescalation is likely to affect Shell's stock compared to its peers.
What will be the impact on Shell's stock?
Over the course of the conflict, global oil prices have fluctuated wildly, rising from about $70/barrel at the beginning of the war to $114/barrel in early May.
When the two sides seem to be on the verge of a breakthrough, as when the U.S. and Iran signed a ceasefire in mid-June, the price has sharply declined. When hostilities flare up again, the price rises.
The stock prices of all five global oil majors, including Shell, Chevron, ExxonMobil, British BP PLC (NYSE:BP), and French TotalEnergies SE (NYSE:TTE), have largely moved in tandem with crude oil prices, surging when oil prices rise and dropping when they fall.
Earlier in the year, that meant all of the oil majors were outperforming the S&P 500, but even at the current high prices, the S&P 500 is outperforming all of them since the war began:
Shell has been one of the worst-performing oil majors during the conflict, if only by a fraction of a percentage point. Unlike some of the other oil majors, it has Middle East assets affected by the war, specifically a co-ownership stake in the Pearl Gas-to-Liquids (GTL) plant in Ras Laffan.
On March 18, the plant was struck by an Iranian attack, with one of the two production trains damaged. Shell expects repairs to the damaged train to take about another six months.

Shell's natural gas production fell in the second quarter, but was more than offset by higher realized natural gas prices. Further strikes in the region would likely contribute to even higher natural gas prices. Along with higher oil prices, this would likely temporarily boost Shell's bottom line and its share price.
As we saw in June, any oil stock price boost caused by higher oil prices has so far been temporary as well. This latest surge in oil prices, if it continues, could push Shell's stock higher and allow it to outperform the S&P 500. But whether such outperformance would last is a much less certain proposition.

The Strait of Hormuz Conflict Just Escalated Again. Here's What It Means for Shell.

ExxonMobil Holdings Corporation XOM paired sharply higher second-quarter revenues with record production marks, but adjusted earnings still missed expectations. The mix shows how volume growth and tighter product markets can lift results while costs and regional disruption remain material earnings variables.
Advantaged Permian and Guyana assets support future volumes and cash generation. Refining, chemicals and Middle East exposure, however, leave results sensitive to market conditions outside the company’s control.
XOM's Q2 Beat on Sales Came With an Earnings Miss
Adjusted earnings of $3.52 per share missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $3.68 by 4.3%. Revenues of $116 billion beat the consensus mark by 21.1% and increased 42.3% year over year.
Higher scheduled-maintenance expenses and increased depreciation weighed on earnings, while Middle East conditions disrupted production. The revenue beat therefore did not fully offset operating and cost pressures.
ExxonMobil Set New Upstream Production Highs
Upstream production totaled 4.514 million oil-equivalent barrels per day in the second quarter. ExxonMobil’s broader plan shows production rising from 4.3 million oil-equivalent barrels per day (Moebd) in 2024 to 4.6 million year to date in 2026 and about 5.5 million by 2030. Advantaged assets increased from 52% of upstream production in 2024 to 59% year to date in 2026 and are planned at about 65% by 2030.

Permian output exceeded a record 1.8 million oil-equivalent barrels per day, with management targeting a 9% production compound annual growth rate through 2030. The fifth Guyana floating production, storage and offloading vessel is slated to start in the fourth quarter, adding 250,000 barrels per day of capacity. Chevron Corporation CVX also reported record U.S. upstream production of nearly 2.1 million oil-equivalent barrels per day in the second quarter.
XOM's Product Solutions Rebound Shows Cyclicality
Energy Products generated $4.10 billion of adjusted earnings as stronger refining conditions, optimization and structural savings supported results. Chemical Products adjusted earnings rose to $1.21 billion from $110 million in the first quarter.
The sequential gains also highlight cyclicality. Refining and chemical earnings remain exposed to margins, feedstock costs, trading results and supply conditions, leaving room for sharp swings as markets change.
ExxonMobil's Middle East Exposure Adds Q3 Risk
Middle East assets represent about 20% of ExxonMobil’s global oil-equivalent production. The conflict temporarily removed about 10% of total upstream production during the second quarter, making regional conditions an important near-term volume variable.
A full-quarter Strait of Hormuz closure in the third quarter could reduce Middle East production by about 750,000 oil-equivalent barrels per day versus 2025. Shell plc SHEL reported Integrated Gas production of 631,000 oil-equivalent barrels per day in the second quarter, down from 909,000 in the first quarter as Qatar-related disruptions reduced volumes.
XOM's Cash Flow Supports Heavy Investment and Returns
ExxonMobil generated $17.2 billion of free cash flow while cash capital expenditures totaled $6.8 billion in the second quarter. That capacity supports continued investment in the Permian, Guyana and liquefied natural gas projects through volatile conditions.
Shareholder distributions reached $9.4 billion, including $4.3 billion of dividends and $5.1 billion of share repurchases. Net debt fell by more than $7 billion during the quarter, preserving financial flexibility for growth and capital returns.
XOM's Style Strength Tempers the Event Risk
ExxonMobil exits the quarter with a clear trade-off. Advantaged production growth and stronger Product Solutions earnings support cash generation, but commodity sensitivity and Middle East disruption can still reduce earnings visibility.

What XOM's Q2 Earnings Say About Production Growth and Market Risk

Shares of Occidental Petroleum (NYSE: OXY) currently sit about 10% below their 52-week high. Despite that lower price, I think the oil stock is a value trap right now. However, I also believe it's a bargain long-term.
Here's how I reconcile those opposing views.

Why Occidental could be a value trap right now
Brent oil currently trades just below $90 a barrel. While that's up from $60 a barrel to start the year, it's below its peak near $120 a barrel.
I think there are further downside risks to oil prices in the near-term. The U.S. military is quietly getting oil out of the Strait of Hormuz, which has kept a lid on oil prices. That key waterway will eventually reopen to greater oil flows. Meanwhile, Persian Gulf countries are moving forward with alternative routes, which should lessen their reliance on the Strait in the future. Additionally, the recent U.S. oil deal with Venezuela will boost that country's output. I think these and other factors will drive oil prices lower over the coming year, which will likely weigh on Occidental's stock.
The case for a future bargain
While I think oil prices could drift lower in the near term, I expect they'll move higher over the longer term. As Shell's CEO warned earlier this year, "All the easy oil and gas has been found." That drives his view that "prices are going to move up...That's the story of five to 10 years."
Occidental has put itself in a strong position to capitalize on higher future oil prices. It expects to deliver a $4 billion improvement in annual sustainable cash flow by 2030 compared to 2025's oil price ($65 a barrel). Driving factors include lower new well costs, growth in higher-margin volumes, continued debt reduction, and the redemption of Berkshire Hathaway's preferred equity investment in 2029. Higher oil prices in 2030, as Shell expects, would add to this cash flow growth expectation.
So, while I think there's more downside potential for Occidental over the next year, I also believe the oil stock is a bargain compared to its earnings growth potential over the next five to 10 years.

Shell's CEO had warned that oil prices would continue to rise after the disruption in the Strait of Hormuz ended.
While that hasn't happened yet, his view is for the next five to ten years.
It's driving Shell's strategic shift to invest more in oil and LNG.
This past June, Shell (NYSE:SHEL) CEO Wael Sawan warned that oil prices would likely continue to rise long after the current conflict with Iran ends. He believed it would take "close to a year, if not longer," for the oil market to find balance again, with even greater challenges in the long term. However, oil prices have been trending lower recently amid talks between Iran and Oman over a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which is critical to the global oil market.
Here's a look back at his warning, and whether the recent dip in crude prices suggests the long-term outlook for Shell and other oil stocks has changed.

What's the latest on the Strait of Hormuz
Iran and Oman are currently working through the details of an agreement for the Strait of Hormuz. According to Iran, the countries have agreed on how to share the waterway and its revenues. A full reopening of this critical waterway -- around a fifth of global oil and gas supplies flowed through it before the war -- would ease the global energy supply picture.
Optimism surrounding a deal has driven down oil prices. Brent, the global oil benchmark, recently dipped below $88 a barrel, its lowest level since Aug. 10.
The global economy has navigated disruptions to the Strait of Hormuz through a series of workarounds. Members of the International Energy Agency have released oil from emergency stockpiles, including the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia and the UAE have ramped up shipments via pipelines that bypass the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, the U.S. military reported that it has helped 660 million barrels of oil pass through the Strait of Hormuz since May. These workarounds have helped keep oil prices down.
The real warning from Shell's CEO
While Shell CEO Wael Sawan warned about the continued near-term impact of the Strait of Hormuz disruption on the oil market, his greater concern was the long-term story that could keep them elevated over the longer term. He stated at a conference in June that "prices are going to move up...That's the story of five to 10 years." That's because "All the easy oil and gas has been found." As a result, the industry will need higher prices to tap into resources that are currently uneconomic to develop.
Shell's long-term bullish outlook for oil and gas is driving its strategic shift. It's currently divesting underperforming assets, including its onshore renewable power business in Europe and potentially its U.S. chemicals assets. That will enable it to sharpen its focus on its upstream oil and gas operations.
The company currently plans to deliver 1 million barrels of oil equivalent per day in new production by 2030. That will enable it to fully offset production declines in its legacy assets, maintaining its liquids production at an average rate of 1.4 million barrels per day through 2030 while growing its liquefied natural gas (LNG) sales volume at a 4% to 5% compound annual rate (most LNG contracts have oil-linked pricing).
Shell is investing heavily to develop new sources of oil and LNG to capitalize on expected long-term growth in demand and prices for these commodities. The company recently signed several deals with Venezuela to develop its oil and gas resources. It also recently made a potential oil discovery offshore Egypt. Shell and its partners are also looking to expand LNG Canada. These and other moves position Shell to continue supplying the global economy with oil and LNG.
Shell remains focused on the long-term view
Oil prices have come down recently on the hopes that the Strait of Hormuz will fully reopen, increasing the supply of oil and LNG to global markets. However, that doesn't mean Shell's CEO is wrong on his long-term view for the oil market. With most of the easy oil and gas resources already developed, oil prices will need to rise over the next five to 10 years to support the development of currently uneconomical resources. That's driving Shell's continued investment in oil and LNG. While oil prices could drop in the interim, the long-term outlook suggests they'll be higher, which would put Shell in a strong position to create value for its shareholders as it narrows its focus on growing its upstream business.
