It explores for and extracts crude oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids; markets and transports oil and gas; produces gas-to-liquids fuels and other products; and operates upstream and midstream infrastructure necessary to deliver gas to market. The company also markets and trades natural gas, liquefied natural gas (LNG), crude oil, electricity, carbon-emission rights; and markets and sells LNG as a fuel for heavy-duty vehicles. In addition, it trades in and refines crude oil and other feed stocks, such as low-carbon fuels, lubricants, bitumen, sulphur, gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel, and marine fuel; produces and sells petrochemicals for industrial use; and manages oil sands activities. Further, the company produces base chemicals comprising ethylene, propylene, and aromatics, as well as intermediate chemicals, such as styrene monomer, propylene oxide, solvents, detergent alcohols, ethylene oxide, and ethylene glycol. Additionally, it generates electricity through wind and solar resources; produces and sells hydrogen; and provides electric vehicle charging services. The company was formerly known as Royal Dutch Shell plc and changed its name to Shell plc in January 2022. Shell plc was founded in 1907 and is headquartered in London, the United Kingdom.

The 900-million-barrel shortfall
The Strait of Hormuz closure has already had a significant impact on the oil market. Shell CEO Wael Sawan stated in an interview with Bloomberg, "We are talking about roughly 900 million barrels that have not been produced in the last couple of months and that has been replaced essentially by stock drawdown." Instead of producing enough oil supply to meet global demand, the world has been relying on emergency stockpiles. According to Goldman Sachs, global inventories are draining at a record pace of 11 million to 12 million barrels per day.
Even when the Strait of Hormuz reopens, the oil market won't go back to normal overnight. It will take several months to restart some of the oil wells shut in due to the war. Additionally, the world will need to restock oil inventories. These issues drive Shell's view that the oil market will remain "tight for the coming months, if not the next year-plus."
This outlook is driving a growing consensus that oil prices will be higher for longer. Goldman Sachs recently laid out several oil price scenarios based on how quickly the Strait reopens and supplies recover. Its base case is that oil will end the year around $90 a barrel, while a more adverse case likely puts crude at $100 by year-end. Meanwhile, the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) latest forecast doesn't call for oil to fall below $90 a barrel until the fourth quarter.
Higher for longer
Brent oil, the global benchmark price, averaged $69 a barrel last year. JP Morgan initially expected it to average around $60 a barrel this year. However, the supply disruptions caused by the war will likely keep oil prices higher for longer. JP Morgan recently warned that Brent could spike to $120-$130 a barrel in the near term, with the potential to surge above $150 if the Strait remains closed through mid-May, before falling below $100 later this year as conditions normalize. Meanwhile, the EIA now expects Brent to average $96 this year and be in the mid-$70s next year.
These forecasts suggest that oil companies will make even more money in the coming months. Most oil companies expected lower crude prices this year, leading them to keep a tight lid on spending. For example, ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP) initially expected to generate an additional $1 billion in free cash flow this year at $70 oil, -- it produced $7.3 billion in 2025 -- driven by cost and capital savings. ConocoPhillips will produce much more cash now that oil is likely to stay above $90 for the rest of the year. Every $1 increase in the average oil price boosts annualized cash flows by over $200 million. The oil company will likely return most of that windfall to investors through share repurchases. Most of its peers will also likely return a meaningful portion of their windfall profits to shareholders through dividends (special and variable) and buybacks this year.
The oil market won't return to normal anytime soon
The longer the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, the longer it will take for the oil market to normalize. That means oil prices could remain high into 2027, enabling oil companies to generate more cash, most of which they'll return to shareholders. That makes investing in oil stocks or an oil ETF look like a smart move through at least the end of this year, since they should have plenty of fuel to continue moving higher.

Rival ExxonMobil XOM signaled that its first-quarter 2026 earnings may decline despite stronger oil and gas prices driven by Iran war-related supply disruptions. ExxonMobil also faces a 6% drop in production due to the Middle East disruptions. Downstream performance is expected to be significantly impacted by delayed cargo deliveries. Meanwhile, European oil major Shell plc SHEL has outlined a mixed Q1’26 outlook, as weaker gas production and geopolitical disruptions weigh on performance. However, Shell expects strong oil trading and marketing gains to offset some of this pressure. Shell continues to face challenges in Qatar, impacting output and liquidity, but LNG volumes remain stable. Despite rising debt, Shell maintains a manageable balance sheet, and its diversified operations and trading strength help it navigate volatility and support overall earnings stability.

The multi-billion-dollar deal comes amid major upheaval in global energy markets. The Strait of Hormuz closure by Iran has disrupted the flow of oil and liquified natural gas (LNG) out of the Persian Gulf. The deal enhances Shell's ability to supply the world with more LNG outside of the Gulf in the future.

Drilling down into the deal
Shell has agreed to buy ARC Resources in a cash-and-stock deal valuing the Canadian energy company at $13.6 billion, with the total value rising to $16.4 billion when accounting for ARC's net debt and leases. It's the European energy giant's biggest deal since it bought BG Group for around $80 billion a decade ago.
ARC Resources currently produces about 374,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (BOE/D). It operates in the same region as Shell's existing Groundbirch asset in British Columbia and the Gold Creek project in Alberta. The merger will add 1.5 million net acres in Canada to Shell's existing 440,000 net acre position, while boosting its oil-equivalent reserves by 2 billion barrels.
Shell estimates that the acquisition of ARC Resources will significantly accelerate its production growth rate. At its Capital Markets Day last year, Shell expected to deliver 1% compound annual production growth through 2030. It now sees its output rising at a 4% compound annual rate during that time frame.
Supporting the growth of LNG in Canada
The war with Iran has created a massive disruption to the flow of oil and LNG out of the Persian Gulf. Before the war, 20% of global oil and LNG supplies passed through the Strait of Hormuz each day. However, its closure has caused a 57% decline in oil production in the Persian Gulf. Meanwhile, LNG exports from Qatar tumbled by 6.9 million metric tons this month due to damage to facilities from the war and the inability to ship it through the Strait.
The U.S. and Canada have helped offset the shortfall, with the U.S. on track to export a record 32.2 million metric tons through the first four months of this year, up 28% year-over year. Meanwhile, LNG Canada (40% owned by Shell) started producing last June.
Shell's purchase of ARC Resources will support the growth of LNG in Canada. Shell and its partners are increasingly likely to approve a Phase 2 expansion of LNG Canada due to the disruption the war is causing to the global LNG market, as more countries will seek to diversify their supplies outside the Persian Gulf. That phase would double LNG Canada's capacity to 28 million tonnes per year by the early 2030s. Both Shell and ARC already supply natural gas to the facility, and the merger will enhance Shell's ability to supply more gas to an expanded export terminal in the future. Meanwhile, ARC Resources has a contract for 1.5 million tonnes per day at Cedar LNG, which is currently under construction and should come online in 2028.
Strengthening its position in the Canadian LNG market
Shell is a global leader in LNG. Its acquisition of ARC Resources enhances that position by increasing its LNG export volumes (via ARC's contracts) and future supply potential (through its gas resources). It puts Shell in a stronger position to capitalize on the current disruption in the global LNG market by increasing its ability to help customers to diversify their supplies with LNG from Canada.

Under the deal terms, ARC shareholders will receive C$8.20 in cash and 0.40247 ordinary shares of Shell for each ARC share, representing approximately 25 percent cash and 75 percent shares as of April 24 market closing. The total consideration would be C$32.80 per share, which represents a 20 percent premium to ARC's 30-day VWAP.
Shell will take on approximately $2.8 billion in net debt and leases, resulting in an enterprise value of around $16.4 billion.
The equity value of $13.6 billion will be funded through $3.4 billion in cash and $10.2 billion in Shell shares.
The boards of both companies have unanimously supported the deal, which is expected to close in the second half of 2026, subject to ARC shareholder, court and regulatory approvals.
Shell expects the acquisition to generate double digit returns, bolstering long-term cashflows, and is accretive to free cash flow per share from 2027 onwards.
ARC is focused on the Montney shale basin in British Columbia and Alberta, Canada. Last year, ARC reported production of 374 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day.
Shell said the acquisition increases its production CAGR to 4 percent from 1 percent as outlined at 2025 Capital Markets Day, compared to 2025.
The transaction is expected to bring annualised synergies of around $250 million within a year of closing.
In pre-market activity, the shares were trading at $89.22, up 0.12 percent.
In London, Shell shares were trading at 3,305.50 pence, down 0.06 percent.

The softening of drilling activity in North America, particularly in the United States, is anticipated to have weighed on Baker Hughes’ quarterly performance. The conflict in the Middle East is expected to have affected BKR’s operations in the region, further weighing on its results in the to-be-reported quarter.
However, Baker Hughes is expected to have delivered a stable performance in the first quarter, backed by robust growth in power infrastructure across diverse end markets. Growth in LNG and gas infrastructure awards is also expected to have aided BKR’s financial performance in the quarter.

Hormuz Volatility: Stocks With Strong Shareholder Yield for Stability

Investors often turn to recommendations made by Wall Street analysts before making a Buy, Sell, or Hold decision about a stock. While media reports about rating changes by these brokerage-firm employed (or sell-side) analysts often affect a stock's price, do they really matter?
Let's take a look at what these Wall Street heavyweights have to say about Shell (SHEL) before we discuss the reliability of brokerage recommendations and how to use them to your advantage.
Shell currently has an average brokerage recommendation (ABR) of 1.96, on a scale of 1 to 5 (Strong Buy to Strong Sell), calculated based on the actual recommendations (Buy, Hold, Sell, etc.) made by 28 brokerage firms. An ABR of 1.96 approximates between Strong Buy and Buy.
Of the 28 recommendations that derive the current ABR, 14 are Strong Buy and one is Buy. Strong Buy and Buy respectively account for 50% and 3.6% of all recommendations.
Brokerage Recommendation Trends for SHEL
The ABR suggests buying Shell, but making an investment decision solely on the basis of this information might not be a good idea. According to several studies, brokerage recommendations have little to no success guiding investors to choose stocks with the most potential for price appreciation.

On the other hand, earnings estimate revisions are at the core of the Zacks Rank. And empirical research shows a strong correlation between trends in earnings estimate revisions and near-term stock price movements.
Furthermore, the different grades of the Zacks Rank are applied proportionately across all stocks for which brokerage analysts provide earnings estimates for the current year. In other words, at all times, this tool maintains a balance among the five ranks it assigns.
There is also a key difference between the ABR and Zacks Rank when it comes to freshness. When you look at the ABR, it may not be up-to-date. Nonetheless, since brokerage analysts constantly revise their earnings estimates to reflect changing business trends, and their actions get reflected in the Zacks Rank quickly enough, it is always timely in predicting future stock prices.
Should You Invest in SHEL?
In terms of earnings estimate revisions for Shell, the Zacks Consensus Estimate for the current year has increased 30.4% over the past month to $9.09.
