But Pfizer's 6.6% yield is dramatically higher than Eli Lilly's 0.6%, which should make Pfizer enticing to dividend lovers.
Eli Lilly (NYSE: LLY) is basically hitting it out of the park right now. Sales of its industry-leading GLP-1 weight-loss drugs Mounjaro and Zepbound rose 125% and 80%, respectively, in the first quarter of 2026, driving a huge 56% sales gain for the drug giant. There's a reason why the stock is up more than 400% over the past five years.
There's just one small problem for dividend investors: Eli Lilly's dividend yield is a tiny 0.6%. That's well below the S&P 500 index's (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) roughly 1% yield and the average drug stock's 1.6%. Eli Lilly competitor Pfizer (NYSE: PFE) has a 6.6% yield, which is more than 10x higher! What's wrong with Pfizer?
While Eli Lilly is hitting on all cylinders today, Pfizer is not. That's why the pharmaceutical giant's stock is down 30% over the past five years and nearly 60% from the high it reached in late 2021. There are a couple of problems worth noting.
First, Pfizer was one of the companies that quickly created a COVID vaccine during the coronavirus pandemic. Sales of COVID vaccines haven't lived up to expectations now that the world has basically learned to live with the illness. In addition, Pfizer has a number of highly profitable drugs set to lose patent protection over the next couple of years. Oncology drug Ibrance will lose patent protection in 2027, with cardiovascular drugs Eliquis and Vyndaqel getting hit the following year.
As if that wasn't enough, Pfizer got a high-profile black eye in 2025 when it was forced to stop research on the GLP-1 drug it was developing. So not only is the company facing headwinds, but it is falling behind in the GLP-1 weight-loss niche that has Wall Street excited about Eli Lilly.
There's nothing unusual going on with Pfizer
While the list of negatives about Pfizer today is long, the truth is it isn't really facing any unusual problems. These are just the normal dynamics of the drug sector. Sure, Pfizer is dealing with a lot of problems all at once, but the over 100-year-old company has successfully navigated headwinds before. It is highly likely to do the same this time around, as well.
Notably, it didn't just give up on GLP-1 drugs. It quickly reset, buying a company with a more attractive drug candidate. And it has other drugs in the pipeline, focused on things like migraines and oncology, among other indications. In 2026 alone, it has 20 major studies evaluating new drug candidates.
Research and development success doesn't always align neatly with patent expirations. Given enough time, Pfizer is likely to get back on the growth track again. In the meantime, long-term, income-focused investors can collect that fat 6.6% yield. The only problem is that the payout ratio is over 100%, which is a worrying sign.
On that front, the company is openly stating that supporting the dividend is a key goal, which it can achieve by tapping other sources of cash, such as the debt market or its own bank accounts. It isn't unusual for companies to do that when they are facing temporary headwinds.
Pfizer isn't for the risk-averse, but it shouldn't be ignored
At the end of the day, Pfizer comes with risks. However, they aren't unusual risks. While a risk-averse income investor may decide to take a pass, those willing to accept a little near-term uncertainty should probably take a closer look. Buying a hot stock like Eli Lilly isn't going to get you much dividend income. Taking on a little risk with Pfizer could reward you with a huge income stream and the potential for capital gains when it works through the normal industry headwinds it currently faces.

Pfizer's Dividend Yield is 10X Bigger Than Eli Lilly's. Does That Make It the Better Stock for Income Investors?

Shares of Pfizer PFE declined nearly 3% on Thursday after the company announced the departure of its chief financial officer (CFO), Dave Denton.
Denton will step down from his current role on Aug. 15 for “a professional opportunity outside of the pharmaceutical industry in consumer goods.” The company has initiated a comprehensive internal and external search for a permanent successor. Cecile Guega, currently senior vice president of finance for Pfizer’s global biopharmaceutical business, will serve as interim CFO beginning Aug.16. Guega will work alongside Denton during the transition period to ensure continuity across the company’s financial operations.
Denton’s resignation comes as a surprise, particularly as Pfizer continues to execute its post-pandemic transformation strategy. Since joining the company in May 2022, Denton has overseen several key initiatives, including cost realignment efforts, business development transactions (which include Seagen and Metsera deals) and capital allocation decisions aimed at stabilizing earnings following the sharp decline in COVID-related revenues.
Despite the leadership change, Pfizer reaffirmed its previously issued 2026 financial guidance, signaling that the transition is not expected to alter its near-term strategic priorities or operational outlook.

Pfizer’s 2026 Guidance
The company expects total revenues for 2026 to be between $59.5 billion and $62.5 billion. The range indicates a decline from 2025 revenues of $62.6 billion due to lower revenues from COVID products and loss of revenues from the upcoming patent cliff.
Pfizer expects adjusted EPS for the year in the range of $2.80-$3.00, which represents a decline from the 2025 EPS of $3.22 due to the dilutive impact of last year’s acquisition and licensing deals, lower COVID revenues and higher taxes.
Adjusted gross margin is expected to be in the mid-70% range, similar to the past several years. Adjusted R&D expenses are expected to be in the range of $10.5 billion to $11.5 billion in 2026, while adjusted SI&A spending is targeted between $12.5 billion and $13.5 billion.
The adjusted effective tax rate is expected to be approximately 15% in 2026.

(RTTNews) - Pfizer Inc. (PFE) announced on Thursday that its current Chief Financial Officer, Dave Denton, will depart the company on August 15 for an opportunity outside the pharmaceutical industry in consumer goods.
Stepping into the role as interim CFO on August 16 will be Cecile Guegan, who currently holds the title of senior vice president of finance for Pfizer's global biopharmaceutical business. She brings more than 20 years of experience in financial operations.
The company noted that it will conduct an internal and external search for a permanent hire. Pfizer said the two executives will collaborate during the handover period.
Albert Bourla, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Pfizer, said, "Cecile's deep institutional knowledge and financial acumen will help lead Pfizer's finance organization and will keep us focused to execute our strategy for patients and shareholders."
PFE is currently trading at $24.99, down 3.61%.

Pfizer Appoints Cecile Guegan Interim CFO As Dave Denton Departs

The global obesity market is one of the largest and fastest-growing opportunities in healthcare today. The market is projected to grow dramatically, reaching nearly $120 billion by 2035, according to Goldman Sachs estimates. At present, Eli Lilly’s LLY Zepbound and Novo Nordisk’s NVO Wegovy are the most popular GLP-1 drugs used to treat obesity. A key new entrant in the market is Pfizer PFE, which is making an effort to become a leader in the next wave of obesity therapies.
The November 2025 acquisition of obesity drugmaker, Metsera, brought Pfizer back into the lucrative obesity space after it scrapped the development of danuglipron, a weight-loss pill, early in 2025. The Metsera deal added four novel incretin and amylin programs, which are expected to generate billions of dollars in peak sales if successfully developed and commercialized.
A key candidate added from the Metsera deal is a potential first-in-class monthly GLP-1 receptor agonist, berobenatide, being developed in phase III to treat adults who are obese or overweight.
While Zepbound and Wegovy are weekly injections, berobenatide starts off as a weekly injection and then switches to a monthly injection. Berobenatide is designed for monthly maintenance dosing.
Data from phase IIb VESPER studies on berobenatide showed that the candidate delivers meaningful weight loss while maintaining a favorable tolerability profile following the transition from weekly to monthly dosing. Pfizer is also studying berobenatide in combination with an ultra-long-acting amylin analog, PF'3945, for obesity.
Pfizer plans an extensive phase III program for berobenatide during 2026. Pfizer plans to start more than 20 obesity studies in 2026, including 10 phase III studies for berobenatide for obesity and obesity-related comorbidities, including knee osteoarthritis and obstructive sleep apnea. Pfizer is targeting the first of a series of potential approvals for berobenatide in 2028.
To expand its obesity pipeline, last year, Pfizer also in-licensed exclusive global rights to develop YP05002, an oral small molecule GLP-1 RA for treating obesity from Chinese biotech YaoPharma.
Can Pfizer Still Gain Obesity Share Despite Its Late Entry?
Pfizer is a late entrant in the obesity market, which is heavily dominated by Lilly and Novo Nordisk. LLY and NVO already have a massive first-mover advantage in the obesity space and enjoy strong brand recognition.
Moreover, to maintain their prowess in the lucrative obesity market, both Novo Nordisk and Lilly are developing several next-generation, more powerful and more convenient GLP-1–based treatments, including oral options and multi-acting candidates. Both Lilly and Novo Nordisk have also launched oral GLP-1 pills for obesity called Foundayo and Wegovy, respectively.
The obesity pipeline is rapidly evolving beyond traditional GLP-1 therapies. Lilly's next-generation candidate, retatrutide, which targets GLP-1, GIP, and glucagon receptors simultaneously, has demonstrated approximately 28% weight loss in late-stage studies, an efficacy outcome previously achievable only through bariatric surgery.
Pfizer currently trails Lilly and Novo Nordisk by several years in the obesity space. However, the obesity market is huge and can support multiple players, and even a modest market share could translate into billions of dollars in annual revenues.
If Pfizer’s berobenatide succeeds and monthly dosing or better tolerability differentiates it from Zepbound/Wegovy, or if its next-generation oral programs prove competitive, it can take a slice of the obesity space in the long term.
Competition Heating Up in the Obesity Space
While Lilly and Novo Nordisk currently dominate this space, smaller biotechs like Structure Therapeutics and Viking Therapeutics are also developing oral GLP-1 drugs for treating obesity.
Amgen is also developing MariTide, a GIPR/GLP-1 receptor, as a single dose in a convenient autoinjector device with a monthly and maybe less frequent dosing.
Others, such as Roche, AstraZeneca AZN and AbbVie, have strengthened their obesity pipelines through licensing deals and acquisitions involving smaller biotechs. AbbVie entered the obesity field by licensing GUB014295 from Gubra. Roche strengthened its obesity presence through the acquisition of Carmot Therapeutics and its obesity assets, such as CT-388, as well as the exclusive collaboration with Zealand Pharma.
AstraZeneca’s most important obesity candidate is oral GLP-1 receptor agonist elecoglipron, which it licensed from Eccogene in 2023. AstraZeneca plans to begin an extensive phase III program on elecoglipron for obesity and type II diabetes soon. AstraZeneca's second major obesity program is AZD6234, a once-weekly amylin analog currently in phase II development.
PFE’s Price Performance, Valuation and Estimates
Pfizer stock has risen 4.1% so far this year compared with an increase of 3.7% for the industry.

From a valuation standpoint, Pfizer appears attractive relative to the industry and is trading below its five-year mean. Going by the price/earnings ratio, Pfizer’s shares currently trade at 8.86 forward earnings, significantly lower than 17.49 for the industry as well as the stock’s five-year mean of 9.52.

Can Pfizer Take Share From Lilly & Novo Nordisk in the Obesity Space?

GSK plc GSK and its Cambridge-based partner, Spero Therapeutics SPRO, announced that the FDA has approved tebipenem pivoxil for the treatment of complicated urinary tract infections (cUTIs). GSK will market the drug under the brand name Utebzi as the first and only oral carbapenem antibiotic for the treatment of cUTIs including pyelonephritis, in adult patients who have limited or no alternative oral treatment options. Utebzi is expected to be commercially available in the United States by the end of the year.
With Utebzi's approval, GSK further strengthens its anti-infectives portfolio, which already includes Blujepa, a first-in-class oral antibiotic approved in 2025 for the treatment of uncomplicated UTIs in women and adolescent girls aged 12 years and older. Together, these therapies expand GSK's presence across uncomplicated and complicated UTI treatment settings.
Year to date, GSK’s shares have risen 6.4% against the industry’s 1.5% decline.

FDA Approves GSK’s Utebzi Based on Phase III Study
The FDA approval of Utebzi was supported by positive data from the phase III PIVOT-PO study, which demonstrated that oral Utebzi was non-inferior to intravenous imipenem-cilastatin in treating hospitalized patients with cUTIs, including pyelonephritis. At the test-of-cure visit, Utebzi achieved an overall success rate of 58.5% compared with 60.2% for imipenem-cilastatin.
cUTIs are serious urinary tract infections associated with a higher risk of complications and poorer outcomes. They commonly occur in patients with underlying conditions such as urinary tract abnormalities, kidney stones, diabetes, immune deficiencies, urinary catheters or a history of kidney transplantation. cUTIs affect more than 3 million people in the United States each year, with treatment failure occurring in up to one-third of patients.
Until now, carbapenems, the standard treatment for severe, resistant infections, were available only in intravenous form, such as Merck & Co’s MRK Primaxin IV and Invanz, and Pfizer’s PFE Merrem. However, Utebzi offers a convenient oral alternative that could reduce hospital dependence while improving patient care.
GSK-Spero Collaboration on Utebzi
GSK developed Utebzi in collaboration with Spero Therapeutics for the treatment of cUTIs, including pyelonephritis. The company secured exclusive rights to develop and commercialize the drug worldwide, excluding certain Asian territories, in 2022. While Spero Therapeutics continued to manage selected development activities, including the phase III PIVOT-PO study, GSK assumed responsibility for the drug’s regulatory submission and commercialization. The FDA previously granted Qualified Infectious Disease Product and Fast Track designations to Utebzi.

(RTTNews) - Pfizer Inc. (PFE) said on Thursday that Chief Financial Officer Dave Denton will leave the company on August 15 to purse an opportunity outside the pharmaceutical industry.
The company said Cecile Guegan, who currently serves as senior vice president of finance for Pfizer's global biopharmaceutical business, will become interim CFO effective August 16.
Pfizer added that it will conduct an internal and external search for a permanent replacement.
Pfizer shares were down more than 1% in pre-market trading after closing at $25.92 on Wednesday.
