1. Pfizer
Pfizer boasts a juicy forward dividend yield of 6.4%. But between poor financial results and stiff competition in some areas, is it sustainable? In my view, it is. One of Pfizer's strengths is its deep portfolio of approved medicines. Even putting aside minor drugs or vaccines that make little revenue and don't meaningfully move the needle for the company, Pfizer had several drugs that generated over $1 billion in sales last year.
True, some of these will lose patent exclusivity soon. That's the case with Pfizer's anticoagulant, Eliquis. The company's coronavirus franchise is also not on solid footing. However, newer products will help it move beyond those issues. Pfizer's Abrysvo, a vaccine for the respiratory syncytial virus, was first approved in 2023. Last year, it generated about $1 billion in sales, up 37% year over year.
Elrexfio, a cancer drug approved in 2023, is also making progress. Last year, its revenue totaled $304 million, up from $103 million in 2024.
Pfizer's current crop of newer medicines likely won't be enough to replace older ones whose sales are already dropping or will start to decline in the next few years. But the company's rich pipeline will help address that problem. Pfizer has started plenty of phase 3 studies over the past couple of years, with more on the horizon.
The company should make significant clinical and regulatory progress through 2030. By then, Pfizer could have a much rejuvenated portfolio of approved medicines and much better financial results. The company hasn't cut its dividend despite the troubles it has encountered, and it is unlikely to do so soon, making it an attractive blue chip dividend stock.
2. Medical Properties Trust
Medical Properties Trust (MPT) is a healthcare-focused real estate investment trust (REIT). Over the past few years, the company has faced challenges, including some of its tenants defaulting on rent and going bankrupt. MPT made difficult but necessary decisions to deal with these issues. The company cut its dividend -- twice -- and sold some assets.
It also put new tenants in the facilities occupied by some of its older ones that went bankrupt. MPT emerged from this ordeal a more diversified company whose business is less likely to suffer significantly from the misfortunes of one or two tenants.
However, investors might still wonder whether the company's monster forward yield of 7% is safe, especially given the uncertain economic landscape we face. My view is that it is. Any REIT can face tenant rent defaults -- as MPT did -- but medical-focused REITs are arguably safer than many others, since healthcare is a defensive sector. MPT is unlikely to encounter the same challenges anytime soon. As evidence of the company's confidence in the recovery of its underlying business and its willingness to reward shareholders, MPT announced last year that it would increase its dividend.
MPT's rebound isn't complete. The stock is still down significantly over the past three years. However, the REIT is well-positioned to perform well over the long run as its business stabilizes. MPT is an attractive, high-yielding dividend stock for long-term income seekers.

Pfizer is navigating a challenging path ahead, but I believe its efforts will pay off. This is the healthcare sector after all, and it can sometimes take just one big drug approval that makes a stock a hot buy again. Pfizer isn't at that stage yet, but with over 100 drug candidates in its pipeline, odds are, it'll have more than a few approvals coming its way in the near future.
Plus, the stock's valuation is extremely low, offering investors a solid margin of safety. It trades at just nine times its expected future earnings (based on analyst estimates). That's a dirt cheap valuation for a company that generated $63 billion in revenue last year, and which could be on the cusp of much more growth. Investing in Pfizer comes with a bit of risk, but the stock also possesses a lot of potential upside in the long run.

(RTTNews) - Pfizer Inc. (PFE) on Tuesday said it has reached settlement agreements with Dexcel Pharma, Hikma Pharmaceuticals, and Cipla over patent litigation related to Vyndamax, its treatment for transthyretin-mediated amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM).
Under the agreements, the effective U.S. patent expiry for Vyndamax has been extended to June 1, 2031, subject to ongoing litigation outcomes. Pfizer had earlier expected a revenue decline beginning in 2029 due to patent expiry, but now anticipates relatively stable U.S. sales from 2028 through mid-2031.
Vyndamax remains the market leader in ATTR-CM treatment, accounting for about 75% of prescription volume. The once-daily therapy has demonstrated significant reductions in all-cause mortality and cardiovascular-related hospitalizations.

Every American knows that healthcare isn't cheap. Healthcare costs continue to rise. Some healthcare stocks are cheap, though, including the stocks of some of the world's biggest drugmakers.
Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) (NYSE: BMY) is one of them. To be sure, BMS isn't the biggest pharma stock. Its market cap of around $120 billion ranks it just outside the top 10 largest drugmakers. But is BMS the best bargain in big pharma?

Some persuasive numbers
A quick look at BMS's valuation metrics might convince you that this stock is a bona fide bargain. For example, the average price-to-sales ratio for pharmaceutical companies is around 4.4. BMS's shares trade at only 2.5 times sales.
The company's bottom line appears to scream "bargain", too. BMS's forward price-to-earnings ratio is a low 9.4. The healthcare sector's average forward earnings multiple is 17.3.
Some investors prefer to use enterprise value (EV) to value companies because it accounts for debt. BMS's EV/EBITDA multiple of 10.3 also looks attractive compared to most other drugmakers. Lilly is super-expensive with its EV/EBITDA of around 27. AbbVie (NYSE: ABBV), AstraZeneca (NYSE: AZN), and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) also sport much higher EV-based multiples than BMS.
What about a deeper dive into BMS's valuation? At least one discounted cash flow model estimates that the pharma stock is significantly undervalued, with an upside of roughly 40%.
Valuation metrics can be misleading
BMS looks like a value stock from nearly every angle. However, valuation metrics can be misleading. Specifically, most of them don't account for a company's growth prospects over the next several years. Unfortunately, BMS's growth will almost certainly slow drastically.
The company faces a daunting patent cliff. U.S. patents for blood thinner Eliquis and cancer immunotherapy Opdivo expire in 2028. Last year, Eliquis was BMS's top-selling drug, while Opdivo ranked No. 2. Their combined sales make up nearly half of the company's total revenue.
BMS won't have to wait until its top two blockbusters lose exclusivity to encounter problems. Cancer drugs Abraxane, Pomalyst, Revlimid, and Sprycel have already lost patent exclusivity. The company expects revenue to decrease slightly this year compared to 2025.
Stocks are usually cheap for a reason. BMS is no exception. Investors have given the stock a low valuation because they know the growth prospects aren't appealing over the rest of the decade.
Granted, BMS has a promising growth portfolio that includes cancer drug Opdualag, autoimmune disease drug Sotyktu, and heart disease drug Camzyos. Combined sales from all of the drugs in the company's growth portfolio rose 17% year over year in 2025. However, BMS's legacy drugs still comprise roughly 45% of revenue.
The biggest bargain in big pharma?
Probably the best argument against Bristol Myers Squibb being the biggest bargain in big pharma is that several other stocks have even lower valuation metrics. Pfizer (NYSE: PFE), for example, boasts a lower forward P/E multiple of 9.1. Factoring in growth projections over the next five years, AbbVie looks more attractively valued.
However, BMS doesn't have to be the biggest bargain in big pharma to still be a good pick for some investors. Many income investors will love the company's forward dividend yield of 4.3% and its record of increasing dividends for 17 consecutive years. A lack of growth won't be as concerning to most income investors. As long as BMS can keep the dividends flowing, they'll be happy.
Some value investors may still find BMS appealing, especially those with long investment horizons. The company's growth portfolio should steadily generate a larger share of its revenue. BMS CEO Chris Boerner believes that his company has "the potential to achieve industry-leading, sustainable growth into the 2030s and beyond." If you're willing to wait, BMS could deliver solid total returns.

These treatments have generated blockbuster revenue for the companies, and rivals, from biotech Viking Therapeutics to pharma giant Pfizer, are developing candidates and hope to eventually join them in this valuable market -- one forecast to approach $100 billion by the end of the decade. But is it possible that the next potential winner in the GLP-1 market may actually be a tech player? Let's find out.
From e-commerce to publishing
This particular tech company is actually involved in a variety of industries, from e-commerce, publishing, and entertainment to physical grocery stores. I'm talking about Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) -- and one of the company's focuses in recent years has been on carving out a spot in the healthcare industry.
Today, Amazon One Medical and Amazon Pharmacy do just this -- the former offers both virtual and in-person medical appointments, while the latter allows patients to easily order prescriptions online. And now, Amazon is using these strengths to launch a new service that addresses the needs of patients who want to lose weight.
Amazon One Medical just announced a weight management program centered around GLP-1 treatment. The program views obesity as a chronic condition, offering patients a comprehensive offering tailored to their specific needs -- and integrating the weight loss journey into the patient's overall healthcare journey at Amazon One Medical. Patients turn to the service for pre-visit screening, prescriptions, follow-up consultations, and more. And all of this leverages the network Amazon has already built, including in-person and virtual medical care, pharmacy, and fast delivery of prescription drugs.
Through the program, patients can order popular GLP-1 medicines, including the latest launches Foundayo and oral Wegovy. Prices are on par with what is generally available elsewhere, but patients benefit from the convenience of organizing their entire weight loss program through Amazon One Medical -- and existing patients will like the promise of 24/7 prescription renewals. Another plus that may appeal to patients: Amazon says all medications are available for "fast delivery" throughout the U.S., and same-day delivery, now happening in almost 3,000 cities, is set to expand its reach.
How Amazon may benefit from the GLP-1 boom
Now, let's consider our question: Could Amazon be the next big winner in the GLP-1 boom? This will depend on the number of patients who decide to choose Amazon to accompany them on the weight loss path. Amazon generates revenue through Amazon One Medical membership fees, as well as through certain visits and medical and pharmacy services. So its well-developed ecosystem of healthcare services could deliver growth if demand for the weight management program takes off.
There's reason to be optimistic about this program's potential due to the high demand for GLP-1 drugs -- and the fact that, at times, patients have had difficulty accessing these treatments. If Amazon makes it easy and convenient for them, the company may become the go-to destination for many patients.
Of course, given the revenue levels generated by Amazon's biggest profit driver, its cloud computing business, I don't expect GLP-1 drugs to become a massive growth engine for the entire company. Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud business, recently reached a $142 billion annual revenue run rate. That said, the weight loss program could become a significant driver for Amazon One Medical's growth -- and make Amazon one of the long-term winners in the growing GLP-1 market.

What's wrong with Pfizer?
There's actually nothing unusual going on with Pfizer's pharmaceutical business. The industry is highly competitive, capital-intensive, and driven by innovation. Unfortunately, research and development outcomes aren't predictable. Sometimes things don't work out as well as planned.

That's one big knock against the company today, given that its internally developed GLP-1 weight-loss drug candidate had to be abandoned. GLP-1 drugs are the hot topic on Wall Street, and Pfizer isn't even in the game yet.
The negative investor sentiment surrounding Pfizer's GLP-1 situation added to the vaccine issues the company was already facing. Part of a stock price rally up until late 2021 was driven by investors excited by the company's COVID vaccine opportunity. While vaccine sales were very strong for a short period, the long-term opportunity proved less robust than expected, and they haven't been a strong point for Pfizer.
There are very good reasons for investors to be downbeat about Pfizer right now. However, the deep drawdown in the stock is really a mix of current pessimism following what now appears to be too much enthusiasm. Pfizer, with a $155 billion market cap, is still a large and innovative healthcare giant.
Pfizer is investing for the future
As noted, you can't predict research outcomes. But given Pfizer's long and successful history, it seems highly likely that it will eventually develop new and innovative drugs. Notably, it quickly shifted gears in the GLP-1 space, buying a company with an attractive GLP-1 drug candidate and partnering with another company to distribute its GLP-1 drug if it gets approved. It is also pushing forward with oncology and migraine drugs, since weight-loss is only one of the many areas on which the company is focused.
Meanwhile, the company is being very clear about the dividend. Pfizer's full-year 2025earnings callpresentation includes a forward-looking slide that prominently states a long-term goal of maintaining the dividend.
There's just one small wrinkle here. The trailing 12-month dividend payout ratio ended 2025 at 126%. That's normally a warning sign for dividend investors, but you have to take it with a grain of salt. Dividends are paid out of cash flows, not earnings. The cash dividend payout ratio is a bit lower at 107%. That's clearly still over 100%, which is a problem. However, companies can support a dividend by increasing debt over short periods.
The real question is the dedication of the company's board of directors to maintaining the dividend. There's no way to know about that commitment, but given management's strong statement on the dividend, it seems likely the board isn't considering cutting the payment any time soon.
There's always a risk
The average pharmaceutical stock yields 1.7%. It is very clear that Pfizer's yield is multiples of that because there's a risk that its dividend could be cut. A quick examination of the payout ratio is ample proof of that risk. And the company's recent business results aren't supportive, either. And yet, Pfizer remains a large and innovative company that continues to focus on developing new drugs.
It seems highly likely that Pfizer gets back on track. And given management's current statements about backing the dividend, more aggressive dividend investors should probably feel reasonably confident that the dividend will be supported until the company's research efforts start to pay off.
