A barrel of Brent Crude jumped 5% on Wednesday to $110 in response to the report, and oil executives are beginning to warn of an extended supply shock, which could last into 2027. Meanwhile, countries in Africa and Asia that depend on oil from the Strait of Hormuz are beginning to ration energy, unsure when adequate supplies will return.
There's a lot of uncertainty around the situation in energy, but one stock that looks ideally positioned is Bloom Energy (NYSE: BE), a maker of hydrogen fuel cells.
Bloom's breakthrough
Bloom is a producer of hydrogen-powered solid oxide fuel cells, and the stock has soared in the last few years as the alternative energy company has benefited from the AI and data center boom, as its fuel cells are easy to deploy for AI data centers, which require large amounts of power.
Bloom soared again following its first-quarter earnings report as it delivered 130% year-over-year revenue growth to $751.1 million, smashing expectations at $540 million, and it reported a strong adjusted operating profit of $129.7 million, which was up 10x from the year before. Adjusted earnings per share jumped from $0.03 to $0.44, easily beating the consensus at $0.13.
Earlier this month, Bloom announced an expansion with Oracle, one of the AI hyperscalers, to deploy up to 2.8 gigawatts of power after already putting 1.2 GW into effect across Oracle projects. That showcases Bloom's effectiveness in delivering supplemental power and its embrace by the AI industry.
Why high oil prices could be a win for Bloom
The longer oil prices stay elevated, the more consumers and businesses are going to search for alternatives to oil and, in some circumstances, natural gas. Tesla noted increased interest in its EVs since the war in Iran began, and EV sales have jumped around much of the world.
Bloom figures to be a beneficiary as well, as data center operators, manufacturers, and others that consume large amounts of power look for alternatives.
The company noted on the recentearnings callthat competing energy options are increasing their cost to the customer, putting Bloom in a favorable position.
Of course, the outcome of the war and the situation in the Strait of Hormuz is unknown, and a resolution would undermine the case for alternative energy companies. Still, Bloom looks like a company that's well-positioned to grow with or without high oil prices.
If the blockade continues, that will only be an added bonus for the stock.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell will discuss the economy in a press conference after the central bank announces its interest rate decision.
The five largest AI hyperscalers -- Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL) (NASDAQ: GOOG), Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META), Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), and Oracle -- reported about $414 billion in capital expenditures last year, up 70% from the prior year. Those companies expect capital expenditures to climb nearly 70% to $700 billion this year.
However, whether or not that spending ultimately leads to greater profitability depends on the extent to which customers adopt AI software and services. Investors will get insight into that situation today, because four of those hyperscalers report financial results. Good news could drive the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) higher, and bad news could drag the benchmark index lower.

Here's what investors should know.
Four hyperscalers at the center of the AI boom report quarterly earnings today
Alphabet, Amazon, Meta Platforms, and Microsoft account for about 18% of the S&P 500, which means the index's performance is heavily influenced by those four hyperscalers. Here's what Wall Street expects when they report earnings after the stock market closes on Wednesday.
Alphabet
The consensus estimate says Alphabet's revenue will increase 19% to $117.2 billion and GAAP earnings will drop 7% to $2.62 per share. Investors will watch the core advertising business as a gauge for the broader economy, but they will focus on Google Cloud, where sales growth has accelerated in three straight quarters because of strong demand for Gemini models and custom artificial intelligence chips called tensor processing units (TPUs).
Amazon
The consensus estimate says Amazon's revenue will increase 21% to $188.9 billion and GAAP earnings will increase 3% to $1.65 per share. Investors will look for margin expansion in the e-commerce division, which should materialize over time because of investments in AI and robotics. Investors also want to see strength in the cloud computing division, where revenue growth accelerated to 24% in the fourth quarter, the fastest growth in three years.
Meta Platforms
The consensus estimate says Meta Platforms' sales will increase 31% to $55.5 billion and GAAP earnings will increase 5% to $6.74 per share. The company's investments in AI have so far boosted engagement across its social media properties, leading to strong demand from advertisers, but investors want to see that trend continue or even intensify. They will also want to know how Meta's newest AI model, Muse Spark, might move the financial needle.
Microsoft
The consensus estimate says Microsoft's sales will increase 16% to $81.3 billion and non-GAAP earnings will increase 17% to $4.06 per share. Investors want evidence Microsoft is monetizing Copilot 365, especially because competitors such as Anthropic and OpenAI are churning out generative AI tools that could disrupt the software industry. Investors also want to see sales growth reaccelerate in the cloud computing division Azure.
Here's the big picture: In general, Wall Street expects muted earnings growth from these companies. That's because heavy investments in AI infrastructure are projected to compress profit margins in the near term. Naturally, investors want reassurance that those investments will eventually translate into greater profitability. The S&P 500 could drop sharply if these companies fail to ease lingering doubts when they report earnings.
The Federal Reserve will announce its interest rate decision today
Earnings reports are not the only catalyst that could move the stock market this week. The Federal Reserve will announce its interest rate decision around 2:00 p.m. ET today. The odds of a rate cut are essentially zero, because inflation has reaccelerated since the Iran conflict began in late February.
However, investors will listen closely to what Chair Jerome Powell says about the economy during his press conference, looking for insight into the future trajectory of interest rates. The S&P 500 is currently near its record high, but any indication that the Fed's next move could be a rate increase (rather than a rate cut) could cause the stock market to drop sharply.

The Stock Market's Most Important Day of the Quarter Has Arrived

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Tuesday closed down -0.49%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) closed down -0.05%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed down -1.01%. June E-mini S&P futures (ESM26) fell -0.46%, and June E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQM26) fell -0.94%.
Stock indexes settled lower on Tuesday, led by losses in technology stocks amid concerns that the massive investment in artificial intelligence will not pay off. The Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI recently failed to meet its goals for new users and sales, undercutting the shares of OpenAI partners and AI infrastructure stocks, including Nvidia, Oracle, Advanced Micro Devices, and CoreWeave.

On the positive side, Coca-Cola rose more than +3% to limit losses in the Dow Jones Industrials after reporting stronger-than-expected Q1 net revenue.
Stocks bounced from their worst levels on Tuesday amid better-than-expected US economic news. The Conference Board Apr consumer confidence index unexpectedly rose +0.6 to a 4-month high of 92.8, stronger than expectations of a decline to 89.0. Also, the Apr Richmond Fed manufacturing survey rose +3 to a 14-month high of 3, stronger than expectations of 1. In addition, the Feb S&P composite-20 home price index rose +0.90% y/y, weaker than expectations of +1.12% y/y and the smallest pace of increase in more than 2.5 years.
Soaring crude oil prices are boosting inflation expectations, pushing bond yields higher, and weighing on stocks. WTI crude oil jumped to a 2-week high on Tuesday after the New York Times reported that President Trump is not satisfied with Iran’s latest proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the war, which includes postponing nuclear negotiations. Mr. Trump has said any deal must include agreements to curb Iran’s nuclear activities. The 10-year T-note yield climbed to a 3-week high of 4.38% on Tuesday. The 2-day FOMC meeting began on Tuesday and concludes on Wednesday, and the Fed is expected to keep monetary policy unchanged.
WTI crude oil prices (CLM26) rose by more than +3% on Tuesday as the US and Iran are locked in a battle for control of the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides blocking the waterway to gain leverage during an extended ceasefire. The Strait of Hormuz remains essentially closed, threatening to deepen the global energy crisis. The ongoing blockade could exacerbate global oil and fuel shortages, as about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transits through the strait. Goldman Sachs estimates that crude output in the Persian Gulf has been curtailed by about 14.5 million bpd, or more than 50%, so far in April, and that the current disruption has drawn down nearly 500 million bbl from global crude stockpiles, which could hit a billion bbl by June.
Kevin Warsh now appears to be on a glide path toward Senate approval as the new Fed Chair after Senator Thom Tillis said on Sunday that he dropped his opposition to the nomination. Mr. Tillis dropped his opposition after the US Justice Department dropped its criminal investigation into the Fed’s overspending on the renovation of its building, in line with Mr. Tillis’ demand. Mr. Tillis views the investigation into Fed Chair Powell as an attempt to force the Fed to cut interest rates. The Senate Banking Committee is due to vote on Mr. Warsh’s appointment this Wednesday and then send the nomination to the full Senate for a vote.
The markets are discounting a 0% chance for a +25 bp FOMC rate hike at the Tue-Wed policy meeting. The markets are expecting the FOMC to leave policy unchanged this week as it awaits further developments in oil prices and inflation.
Earnings season ramps up this week with several Magnificent Seven technology stocks reporting. Earnings results thus far have been supportive of stocks. As of Tuesday, 80% of the 172 S&P 500 companies that reported Q1 earnings have beaten estimates. Q1 S&P 500 earnings are projected to climb +12% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Stripping out the technology sector, Q1 earnings are projected to increase around +3%, the weakest in two years.
Overseas stock markets settled lower on Tuesday. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell to a 2.5-week low and closed down -0.41%. China's Shanghai Composite closed down -0.19%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 closed down -1.02%.
Interest Rates
June 10-year T-notes (ZNM6) on Tuesday closed down -5.5 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield rose +1.0 bp to 4.350%. June T-notes fell to a 3-week low on Tuesday, and the 10-year T-note yield rose to a 3-week high of 4.378%. Tuesday’s +3% jump in WTI crude oil prices boosted inflation expectations and weighed on T-notes. The 10-year breakeven inflation rate rose to a 14-month high of 2.472% on Tuesday. Also, better-than-expected US economic news on Tuesday, including Apr consumer confidence and the Apr Richmond Fed manufacturing survey, was bearish for T-note prices.
T-notes recovered from their worst level on Tuesday amid strong demand for the Treasury’s $44 billion auction of 7-year T-notes that had a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.51, above the 10-auction average of 2.50.
European government bond yields moved higher on Tuesday. The 10-year German bund yield rose to a 2-week high of 3.086% and finished up +3.4 bp to 3.067%. The 10-year UK gilt yield climbed to a 1-month high of 5.028% and finished up +3.4 bp to 5.006%.
The ECB's Mar 1-year CPI expectations rate rose to 4.0% from 2.5% in Feb, stronger than expectations of 2.8% and the highest figure in nearly 2.5 years. The Mar 3-year CPI expectations rate rose to 3.0% from 2.5% in Feb, stronger than expectations of 2.6% and the highest figure in three years.
Swaps are discounting an 11% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on Thursday.
US Stock Movers
AI infrastructure stocks and OpenAI partners retreated on Tuesday after the Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI recently missed its own revenue and new-user targets. ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) closed down more than -7% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100, and Applied Digital (APLD), Applied Materials (AMAT), Sandisk (SNDK), CoreWeave (CRWV), and Vertiv Holdings (VRT) closed down more than -5%. Also, Broadcom (AVGO), Oracle (ORCL), and KLA Corp (KLAC) closed down more than -4%, and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Micron Technology (MU), Marvell Technology (MRVL), ASML Holding NV (ASML), Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX), and Lam Research (LRCX) closed down more than -3%. In addition, GE Vernova (GEV) and Western Digital (WDC) closed down more than -2%.
Mining stocks fell on Tuesday, amid the sell-off in gold, silver, and copper prices. Newmont Corp (NEM) and Coeur Mining (CDE) closed down more than -5%, and Anglogold Ashanti (AU), Southern Copper (SCCO), and Hecla Mining (HL) closed down more than -4%. Also, Barrick Mining (B) and Freeport McMoRan (FCX) closed down more than -3%.
Packaging stocks rose on Tuesday after Citigroup said Smurfit WestRock would raise US containerboard prices by $50 per ton, effective June 1. Packaging Corp of America (PKG) and International Paper (IP) closed up by more than +4%, and Smurfit Westrock Plc (SW) closed up more than +1%.
Rambus (RMBS) closed down more than -20% after reporting Q1 EPS of 55 cents, weaker than the consensus of 65 cents.
Spotify Technology SA (SPOT) closed down more than -12% after reporting Q1 operating income of $737 million, below the consensus of $787 million.
Alexandria Real Estate Equities (ARE) closed down more than -11% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q1 revenue of $671.0 million, weaker than the consensus of $692.7 million.
Qiagen NV (QGEN) closed down more than -10% after forecasting full-year CER net sales of up +1% to +2%, well below the consensus of +4.62%.
Pentair Plc (PNR) closed down more than -10% after forecasting Q2 adjusted EPS of $1.47 to $1.50, below the consensus of $1.50.
Corning (GLW) closed down more than -8% after forecasting Q2 core EPS of 73 cents to 77 cents, the midpoint below the consensus of 76 cents.
Sherwin-Williams (SHW) closed down more than -3% to lead losers in the Dow Jones Industrials after forecasting full-year adjusted EPS of $11.50 to $11.90, the midpoint below the consensus of $11.72, and saying it sees little chance of end-market recovery this year due to weak consumer sentiment.
United Parcel Service (UPS) closed down more than -3% after leaving its full-year financial guidance unchanged despite reporting better-than-expected Q1 sales and profit.
Centene (CNC) closed up more than +13% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q1 revenue of $49.94 billion, above the consensus of $47.41 billion, and raising its full-year revenue forecast to $187.5 billion to $191.5 billion from $186.5 billion to $190.5 billion, the midpoint above the consensus of $188.79 billion.
Franklin Resources (BEN) closed up more than +6% after reporting Q2 adjusted EPS of 71 cents, stronger than the consensus of 55 cents.
Nucor (NUE) closed up more than +4% after reporting Q1 net sales of $9.50 billion, stronger than the consensus of $8.87 billion.
Coca-Cola (KO) closed up more than +3% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials after reporting Q1 net revenue of $12.50 billion, better than the consensus of $12.25 billion.
Dynatrace (DT) closed up more than +1% after the Wall Street Journal reported that Starboard Value LP took a stake in the company and is pushing the company to better capitalize on the shift to AI.

Stocks Fall on AI Jitters and Surging Crude Oil Prices

Monday, the stock market was on fire, with the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite both hitting new all-time highs, and optimism reigned. The mood turned dour on Tuesday morning as a report about one of the most consequential stocks in artificial intelligence (AI) caught investors off guard, sending AI chip stocks tumbling.
Growth is slowing at OpenAI, as the ChatGPT parent missed internal goals for revenue and user growth, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. The company was shooting for 1 billion users by the end of 2025, a goal it has yet to hit, according to the report. If true, this could have important implications for the future of AI.

The first domino to fall?
OpenAI was arguably the catalyst that kick-started the AI revolution. When ChatGPT was released, it became the fastest-growing consumer app in history, gaining more than 1 million users within five days of its launch in November 2022, and soaring to 123 million monthly active users within three months. Earlier this year, OpenAI announced it had 900 million weekly active users and 50 million subscribers.
To feed this unprecedented demand, OpenAI has spun a web of deals with some of the biggest names in technology -- including chipmakers and cloud operators -- arguing that compute capacity was the biggest obstacle to its growth. The magnitude of these agreements is staggering, with more than $1 trillion worth of deals inked in 2025 alone:
The implication is that if OpenAI's user growth slows, its revenue will follow suit, and the company won't have sufficient resources to pay for all its AI chip and computing obligations. Indeed, CFO Sarah Friar expressed concerns that OpenAI wouldn't be able to "pay for future computing contracts if revenue doesn't grow fast enough," according to the report.
OpenAI pushed back, arguing that the company is "firing on all cylinders" and calling the report "prime clickbait." Investors were unconvinced, pushing AI stocks lower, with Nvidia down 3%, and AMD and Oracle each down 4% on the news (as of this writing).
It's important to point out that these deals aren't driving current growth. In the most recent quarter, Nvidia's revenue jumped 73% year over year, AMD's climbed 34%, and Oracle's grew 22%. Slowing growth at OpenAI was inevitable and might push out future growth. That said, missing an internal forecast isn't a deal breaker, nor is it a dire warning.
What this means for investors
When ChatGPT was released, it had the stage to itself, but that was short-lived. In the years since, a host of AI tools have emerged, with each vying for market share. Alphabet's Google Gemini has amassed 750 million monthly active users, Microsoft Copilot has 150 million, and estimates place Anthropic's Claude -- a relative newcomer -- at between 18 million and 30 million users, though no official tally has been released.
This suggests that while the pool of AI users is still growing, it's also being reorganized, as users find the AI tool best suited to their needs.
This means that demand isn't falling, it's merely being redistributed among the available options. This further suggests that the sell-off currently plaguing AI chip stocks is overdone. Furthermore, Nvidia and Oracle are currently selling for 25 times and 22 times forward earnings, respectively, so they're attractively priced relative to the opportunity. AMD is a bit pricier at 48 times forward earnings.
A slowing of OpenAI's growth doesn't suggest anything dire for the broader AI market, but merely a redistribution of the wealth. As such, investors should ignore the hyperbole and stay invested.

Nvidia, AMD, and Other AI Chip Stocks Are Swooning. Blame OpenAI.

Shares in Oracle (NYSE: ORCL) declined by as much a 6.3% in early trading today. The move comes as the market stresses the latest updates from its partner, OpenAI. Oracle has a $300 billion cloud computing deal with OpenAI, in which it is spending heavily to build out AI infrastructure to generate future revenue from the AI giant.
What happened with OpenAI
According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, OpenAI is missing its internal targets, and some of its management and board members are raising questions over data center spending. The news came at a bad time for OpenAI, as Tesla CEO Elon Musk's lawsuit against OpenAI CEO Sam Altman comes to trial. A win for Musk could see a shake-up at OpenAI, resulting in a change in strategic direction.

What it means to Oracle investors
None of this is great news for Oracle, as any doubt over its partner's growth prospects and leadership casts doubt on Oracle's own growth plans. According to data from S&P Market Intelligence, the company's heavy capital spending will push its net debt to $176 billion in 2029, before it turns free cash flow positive again as OpenAI revenue grows strongly.
The risk in that scenario has led to an increase in the price of credit default swaps (insurance against default) on Oracle's debt.
As such, the recent rally in the stock price hasn't been backed up significantly by the bond markets. All told, there are probably better ways to play the AI growth story than Oracle.

After grabbing the earlier lead in large language models and the brand awareness with ChatGPT, rivals like Google Gemini and Anthropic's Claude have caught up. A few months ago, OpenAI issued a "code red" in the face of stiff competition from Google and Anthropic, aiming to improve its core technology and reclaim the lead in the AI race.
At the same time, OpenAI's financial prospects began to look messier, even as it has raised roughly $200 billion in its history, including a round that brought in $122 billion that closed a month ago, to fund its breakneck data center expansion.
While OpenAI has grown rapidly, it's also putting up increasingly wider losses, and it needs the business to continue its rapid pace of growth to sustain the business and pay for the chips and computing power it needs to run its models.
According to The Wall Street Journal, OpenAI is now failing to do that, missing key internal growth targets that put the future of the business in question.
What's happening at OpenAI
OpenAI is now expressing doubt about its ability to hit its financial targets and pay for future computing contracts, which could spell trouble for the rest of the AI sector as OpenAI has future spending commitments of around $600 billion to chipmakers like Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) and AMD, cloud infrastructure partners like Microsoft, Oracle,and CoreWeave, and others.
The "expand-at-all-costs" to secure computing capacity strategy that has guided the company since the launch of ChatGPT has now left it in a difficult spot, especially as both its user and revenue growth rates have slowed. Meanwhile, Anthropic seems to have grabbed the mantle as the leading disruptor in AI as its updates have rattled the software sector, sparking sell-offs on multiple occasions. Its Mythos AI model was even deemed too powerful to be released to the general public.
According to a report in The Information from last September, OpenAI is planning to burn through $115 billion by 2029 as it ramps up on computing capacity. However, that cash burn forecast could be significantly larger now, given the slowdown in growth. If OpenAI's prospects continue to dim, its valuation could collapse. Investors are betting the company will eventually be highly profitable, despite its current spending spree, or it wouldn't have received a valuation of close to $1 trillion.
What it means for the AI sector
A troubled OpenAI would be a problem for partners like Nvidia and Microsoft that are counting on revenue from the AI start-up, but it doesn't necessarily doom the broader AI sector. OpenAI's slowdown seems to be a result of its weakening competitive position against rivals like Google and Anthropic, rather than questions about long-term demand for AI capabilities. For investors, it depends on whether OpenAI's loss is the gain of Anthropic or another AI model company.
Still, it's not surprising that stocks like Nvidia pulled back on the news, and the Nasdaq Composite fell more than 1% on the report on Tuesday. OpenAI has been the flagbearer for the AI industry since it's took the market by storm, though we could be seeing a changing of the guard as Anthropic just reached a valuation of $1 trillion in private secondary markets.
If the WSJ report is accurate, OpenAI could be forced to significantly retrench. For now, that doesn't seem to be cause for alarm. However, if Anthropic faces similar growth and cash burn issues, then the industry could be in real trouble.

OpenAI's Path To Profitability Is Closing. Is It a Warning for AI Stocks?

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) today is down -0.66%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) is up +0.03%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) is down -1.30%. June E-mini S&P futures (ESM26) are down -0.63%, and June E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQM26) are down -1.27%.
Stock indexes are under pressure today, led by losses in technology stocks amid concerns that the massive investment in artificial intelligence will not pay off. The Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI recently failed to meet its goals for new users and sales, undercutting the shares of OpenAI partners and AI infrastructure stocks, including Nvidia, Oracle, Advanced Micro Devices, and CoreWeave.

On the positive side, Coca-Cola is up more than +6% to keep the Dow Jones Industrials in positive territory after reporting stronger-than-expected Q1 net revenue.
Also, better-than-expected US economic news today is supportive of stocks. The Conference Board Apr consumer confidence index unexpectedly rose +0.6 to a 4-month high of 92.8, stronger than expectations of a decline to 89.0. Also, the Apr Richmond Fed manufacturing survey rose +3 to a 14-month high of 3, stronger than expectations of 1. In addition, the Feb S&P composite-20 home price index rose +0.90% y/y, weaker than expectations of +1.12% y/y and the smallest pace of increase in more than 2.5 years.
Soaring crude oil prices are also boosting inflation expectations, pushing bond yields higher and weighing on stocks. WTI crude oil jumped to a 2-week high today after the New York Times reported that President Trump is not satisfied with Iran’s latest proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the war, which includes postponing nuclear negotiations. Mr. Trump has said any deal must include agreements to curb Iran’s nuclear activities. The 10-year T-note yield climbed to a 3-week high of 4.38% today ahead of the start of the 2-day FOMC meeting, where the Fed is expected to keep monetary policy unchanged.
WTI crude oil prices (CLM26) are up by more than +3% today as the US and Iran are locked in a battle for control of the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides blocking the waterway to gain leverage during an extended ceasefire. The Strait of Hormuz remains essentially closed, threatening to deepen the global energy crisis. The ongoing blockade could exacerbate global oil and fuel shortages, as about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transits through the strait. Goldman Sachs estimates that crude output in the Persian Gulf has been curtailed by about 14.5 million bpd, or more than 50%, so far in April, and that the current disruption has drawn down nearly 500 million bbl from global crude stockpiles, which could hit a billion bbl by June.
Kevin Warsh now appears to be on a glide path toward Senate approval as the new Fed Chair after Senator Thom Tillis said on Sunday that he dropped his opposition to the nomination. Mr. Tillis dropped his opposition after the US Justice Department dropped its criminal investigation into the Fed’s overspending on the renovation of its building, in line with Mr. Tillis’ demand. Mr. Tillis views the investigation into Fed Chair Powell as an attempt to force the Fed to cut interest rates. The Senate Banking Committee is due to vote on Mr. Warsh’s appointment this Wednesday and then send the nomination to the full Senate for a vote.
The markets are discounting a 0% chance for a +25 bp FOMC rate hike at the Tue-Wed policy meeting. The markets are expecting the FOMC to leave policy unchanged this week as it awaits further developments in oil prices and inflation.
Earnings season ramps up this week with several Magnificent Seven technology stocks reporting. Earnings results thus far have been supportive of stocks. As of today, 80% of the 150 S&P 500 companies that reported Q1 earnings have beaten estimates. Q1 S&P 500 earnings are projected to climb +12% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Stripping out the technology sector, Q1 earnings are projected to increase around +3%, the weakest in two years.
Overseas stock markets are lower today. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell to a 2.5-week low and is down -0.26%. China's Shanghai Composite closed down -0.19%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 closed down -1.02%.
Interest Rates
June 10-year T-notes (ZNM6) today are down -8 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is up +2.8 bp to 4.368%. June T-notes fell to a 3-week low today, and the 10-year T-note yield rose to a 3-week high of 4.378%. Today’s +3% jump in WTI crude oil prices is boosting inflation expectations and weighing on T-notes. The 10-year breakeven inflation rate rose to a 14-month high of 2.472% today. Also, better-than-expected US economic news today on Apr consumer confidence and the Apr Richmond Fed manufacturing survey were bearish for T-note prices. In addition, supply pressures are undercutting T-note prices, as the Treasury will auction $30 billion of 2-year floating rate notes and $44 billion of 7-year T-notes later today.
European government bond yields are moving higher today. The 10-year German bund yield rose to a 2-week high of 3.086% and is up +4.0 bp to 3.073%. The 10-year UK gilt yield climbed to a 1-month high of 5.028% and is up +4.4 bp to 5.016%.
The ECB's Mar 1-year CPI expectations rate rose to 4.0% from 2.5% in Feb, stronger than expectations of 2.8% and the highest figure in nearly 2.5 years. The Mar 3-year CPI expectations rate rose to 3.0% from 2.5% in Feb, stronger than expectations of 2.6% and the highest figure in three years.
Swaps are discounting a 13% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on Thursday.
US Stock Movers
AI infrastructure stocks and OpenAI partners are retreating today after the Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI recently missed its own revenue and new-user targets. ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) is down more than -8% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100, and Applied Digital (APLD), Sandisk (SNDK), and Vertiv Holdings (VRT) are down more than -6%. Also, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Applied Materials (AMAT), Micron Technology (MU), CoreWeave (CRWV), GE Vernova (GEV), and Lam Research (LRCX) are down more than -5%, and Western Digital (WDC), ASML Holding NV (ASML), Marvell Technology (MRVL), Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX), Broadcom (AVGO), Oracle (ORCL), and KLA Corp (KLAC) are down more than -4%. In addition, Nvidia (NVDA) is down more than -3% to lead losers in the Dow Jones Industrials.
Mining stocks are retreating today with the sell-off in gold, silver, and copper prices. Newmont Corp (NEM), Coeur Mining (CDE), and Anglogold Ashanti (AU) are down more than -5%, and Hecla Mining (HL), Barrick Mining (B), and Southern Copper (SCCO) are down more than -4%. Also, Freeport McMoRan (FCX) is down more than -3%.
Rambus (RMBS) is down more than -24% after reporting Q1 EPS of 55 cents, weaker than the consensus of 65 cents.
Alexandria Real Estate Equities (ARE) is down more than -10% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q1 revenue of $671.0 million, weaker than the consensus of $692.7 million.
Spotify Technology SA (SPOT) is down more than -10% after reporting Q1 operating income of $737 million, below the consensus of $787 million.
Qiagen NV (QGEN) is down more than -9% after forecasting full-year CER net sales of up +1% to +2%, well below the consensus of +4.62%.
Corning (GLW) is down more than -8% after forecasting Q2 core EPS of 73 cents to 77 cents, the midpoint below the consensus of 76 cents.
Pentair Plc (PNR) is down more than -7% after forecasting Q2 adjusted EPS of $1.47 to $1.50, below the consensus of $1.50.
United Parcel Service (UPS) is down more than -3% after leaving its full-year financial guidance unchanged despite reporting better-than-expected Q1 sales and profit.
Centene (CNC) is up more than +7% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q1 revenue of $49.94 billion, above the consensus of $47.41 billion, and raising its full-year revenue forecast to $187.5 billion to $191.5 billion from $186.5 billion to $190.5 billion, the midpoint above the consensus of $188.79 billion.
Coca-Cola (KO) is up more than +6% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials after reporting Q1 net revenue of $12.50 billion, better than the consensus of $12.25 billion.
Dynatrace (DT) is up more than +3% after the Wall Street Journal reported that Starboard Value LP took a stake in the company and is pushing the company to better capitalize on the shift to AI.
S&P Global Inc (SPGI) is up more than +3% after reporting Q1 revenue of $4.17 billion, above the consensus of $4.07 billion.
Nucor (NUE) is up more than +3% after reporting Q1 net sales of $9.50 billion, stronger than the consensus of $8.87 billion.
Franklin Resources (BEN) is up more than +2% after reporting Q2 adjusted EPS of 71 cents, stronger than the consensus of 55 cents.

Swaps are discounting a 13% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on Thursday.

AI infrastructure stocks and OpenAI partners are retreating today after the Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI recently missed its own revenue and new-user targets. ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) is down more than -6% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100, and Applied Materials (AMAT) is down more than -5%. Also, Lam Research and KLA Corp (KLAC) are down more than -4%, and Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Broadcom (AVGO), Western Digital (WDC), ASML Holding NV (ASML), Marvell Technology (MRVL), Oracle (ORCL), and CoreWeave (CRWV) are down more than -3%. In addition, Nvidia (NVDA) is down more than -2% to lead losers in the Dow Jones Industrials, and Vertiv Holdings (VRT), Qualcomm (QCOM), Applied Digital (APLD), and GE Vernova (GEV) are down more than -2%.
Rambus (RMBS) is down more than -17% after reporting Q1 EPS of 55 cents, weaker than the consensus of 65 cents.
Alexandria Real Estate Equities (ARE) is down more than -13% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q1 revenue of $671.0 million, weaker than the consensus of $692.7 million.
Spotify Technology SA (SPOT) is down more than -10% after reporting Q1 operating income of $737 million, below the consensus of $787 million.

Plug Power (NASDAQ: PLUG) is a firm believer in a hydrogen-powered future. It created the first viable commercial market for hydrogen fuel cell technology and has deployed more than 72,000 fuel cells and over 275 fueling stations. It's investing heavily to build a leading end-to-end green hydrogen ecosystem.
While Plug Power has great promise, my problem with the company is its inability to turn a profit. It currently doesn't expect to start making money until 2028. That's why I think investors should forget about investing in Plug Power and consider the already profitable Bloom Energy (NYSE: BE).

Plug is still deep in the red, while Bloom's earnings are growing
Plug Power generated over $700 million in revenue last year. While that was up from $628 million in 2024, it was down from $891 million in 2023. Meanwhile, Plug's operations are losing money and burning through cash. The company posted a loss of more than $1.6 billion last year, up from nearly $1.4 billion in 2023. It used $536 million in cash from operations last year, requiring it to issue stock to bridge the gap, diluting existing investors and weighing on the share price.
Plug Power expects to steadily reach profitability over the next few years. It aims to achieve positive earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) in the fourth quarter of this year, positive operating earnings by the end of 2027, and overall profitability by 2028.
While Plug Power is still years away from reaching profitability, Bloom Energy is already there. It generated $2 billion in revenue last year (up 37%) while reporting $72.8 million in operating income. Bloom also generated $113.9 million in operating cash flow last year, its second straight year of positive free cash flow.
Bloom's focus is paying off
One reason Plug Power continues to lose money is its grand ambitions to build end-to-end green hydrogen businesses across the U.S. and Europe. It's building hydrogen production capacity, electrolyzers to produce hydrogen, and fuel cells. Its broad strategy gives it multiple ways to win as the hydrogen market grows. However, it's an expensive plan to execute.
The company has started streamlining its strategy over the past year. For example, it monetized its electricity rights (which it secured to support green hydrogen production) in New York and another location to strengthen its balance sheet. It also partnered with a data center developer to explore providing auxiliary and back-up power solutions using Plug's advanced fuel cell technology.
While Plug is in the early stages of exploring the potential of using its fuel cells to power data centers, Bloom Energy has emerged as a leader in that space. For example, last fall, Brookfield Asset Management formed a strategic AI partnership with Bloom Energy. As part of the deal, Brookfield will invest up to $5 billion to deploy Bloom's advanced fuel cell technology in data centers. They're also collaborating on the design and delivery of AI factories (specialized AI data centers) worldwide. Additionally, Bloom recently expanded its strategic partnership with Oracle to deploy up to 2.8 GW of its fuel cell systems in data centers. With these and other deals, Bloom now has a sales backlog of about $20 billion, supporting its continued growth and profitability.
Bloom is already where Plug wants to go
Plug Power wants to eventually become a profitable clean energy leader. However, it still has a long way to go before it achieves that goal. Bloom Energy, on the other hand, is already profitable. It has also emerged as a leader in providing clean power solutions to data centers, a market Plug wants to tap into. Those features make Bloom Energy the better energy stock to buy to ride the clean energy transition.
