Margins in focus
While Oracle bulls get excited by the company's enormous cloud computing backlog, bears worry about the spending needed to build out capacity and the return it will get on these infrastructure investments. The buildout will also negatively impact gross margins initially, as there is a lag from its enormous spending (even though it is depreciated) and the revenue it generates. However, this is normal and not surprising or worrying.
For the quarter, Oracle's revenue climbed 21% year over year to $19.18 billion, topping the $19.1 billion analyst consensus, as compiled by LSEG. Cloud revenue surged 47% to $9.9 billion. Within the cloud segment, cloud infrastructure revenue skyrocketed by 93% to $5.8 billion, while cloud application revenue grew by 10% to $4.1 billion. Software segment revenue fell by 2% to $6.8 billion.
Adjusted earnings per share (EPS) jumped 20% year over year to $2.03. That came in above the $1.96 analyst consensus.
Oracle's cloud computing backlog soared 363% to $638 billion. It said most of its increased backlog over the past two quarters has come from customers who prepaid for graphics processing units (GPUs) or supplied their own to the company. It said this portion of its backlog now stands at $75 billion.
Looking ahead, management maintained its fiscal-year 2027 revenue forecast of $90 billion. For its fiscal Q1 of 2027, it projected revenue to rise by 27% to 29% and for cloud revenue to climb by 57% to 63%. It expects its adjusted EPS to increase by 16% to 19% to a range of $1.72 to $1.75.
Is the stock a buy on the dip?
Oracle is likely to remain driven by investor emotion for the foreseeable future, as it will take time to demonstrate that it is achieving a solid return on its investments. The company is smartly having customers like OpenAI prepay for GPUs, taking away some of the cash flow burden from its massive buildout. Nonetheless, it still needs to spend a massive amount, and it will raise $40 billion this year through debt and equity sales to help fund it.
Given its sizable debt load and negative free cash flow, the stock is more of a speculative investment, even though this is a sizable company with a storied history. With a forward price to earnings ratio (P/E) of 23 times, though, it looks like one worth making.

Oracle Stock Dips Despite Continued Strong Backlog Growth. Should Investors Buy the Stock on the Dip?

As I write this, 12 publicly listed American companies have a market capitalization of $1 trillion or more, with SpaceX being the newest member of the prestigious club. Software and cloud infrastructure giant, Oracle (NYSE: ORCL), was tantalizingly close to joining them late last year when its market cap topped $935 billion, but its stock has since hit a wall.

Oracle operates some of the fastest, and most cost-efficient data centers for artificial intelligence (AI) training and inference workloads, and it has a gigantic order backlog for computing capacity worth $638 billion. However, there is a real possibility that some of Oracle's top customers won't be able to fulfill their obligations, so investors are treading with caution.
Oracle stock is down 44% from its all-time high, and here's why the dip might not be a buying opportunity.
A leader in the AI infrastructure race
Oracle is building data centers as fast as it can to fill demand for computing capacity from its AI customers, which include OpenAI, Meta Platforms, and Elon Musk's xAI, to name a few. It fills these data centers with thousands of specialized chips called graphics processing units (GPUs), which are supplied by Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices.
Oracle has a few advantages over other cloud providers. First, it prioritizes automation in its data centers, so it can bring them online much faster than competitors who rely on human-centric infrastructure management. Second, it uses proprietary remote direct memory access (RDMA) networking technology, which shifts data between GPUs faster than traditional Ethernet networks.
These attributes result in faster processing speeds and lower costs, which is a winning combination for AI developers who often pay for computing capacity by the minute.
Oracle has also built some enormous GPU clusters, allowing developers to tap into more than 131,000 of the latest chips from Nvidia and AMD. This is a key reason why companies at the forefront of the AI revolution -- like OpenAI -- use Oracle's infrastructure.
A big chunk of Oracle's backlog is from one customer
Oracle generated $19.2 billion in total revenue during its fiscal 2026 fourth quarter (ended May 31), which was a 21% increase from the year-ago period. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) contributed $5.8 billion, which grew at a significantly faster pace of 93%, highlighting the significant demand for data center capacity.
But the headline number in this report was Oracle's $638 billion in remaining performance obligations (RPO), which soared by 363% year over year. RPO reflects the value of signed contracts for services that haven't been delivered yet, so it's similar to an order backlog. Oracle says the $638 billion figure is a good indication of future revenue, but investors should be aware of a few issues.
First, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal from last September, around $300 billion of Oracle's RPO was attributable to OpenAI alone. The start-up raised $122 billion from investors in March, but it only has around $25 billion in annualized revenue and is still posting losses. Therefore, it's unclear how the company will fulfill this enormous commitment to Oracle, especially since it has agreements of similar size with other cloud providers like Microsoft.
Second, Oracle only expects to convert 12% of its RPO into revenue over the next 12 months, followed by a further 34% in the 24 months after that. In other words, less than half of its RPO could become actual revenue over the next three years, which is a very wide window in an industry moving as quickly as AI. Since we are already witnessing cracks in the demand picture, RPO might not be the best indicator after all.
Third and finally, Oracle is carrying over $122 billion in long-term debt, and it just announced plans to raise another $40 billion through a mix of debt and equity. The company is investing heavily to build more AI data centers, which creates a risky situation for investors if that big RPO number doesn't turn into revenue.
Oracle stock looks fairly valued
Oracle generated generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) earnings of $5.83 per share during fiscal 2026, placing its stock at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 31.6. That is a slight discount to the Nasdaq-100 index, which trades at a P/E of 34.6, so Oracle might be close to fair value relative to a basket of its big-tech peers.
However, Wall Street is only forecasting 7.7% earnings growth in fiscal 2027, so there might not be a whole lot of room for upside in its stock over the next 12 months. The Street is expecting much faster growth of 45.7% in fiscal 2028, but it's tough to rely on that prediction with any confidence right now given some of the issues I highlighted earlier.
In summary, investors might want to take a wait-and-see approach to Oracle. If the company continues to deliver positive results over the next few quarters, then there might be an opportunity to take a long-term position in its stock at the right price.

This Artificial Intelligence (AI) Stock Appeared Destined for the $1 Trillion Club. Here's Why It Lost Momentum.

Oracle's (NYSE: ORCL) stock is getting pummeled after reporting its fourth-quarter and full-year fiscal 2026 earnings. Shares fell more than 12% after the software giant disclosed its plans to raise $40 billion through debt and equity financing. Only $20 billion of that raise had been previously announced. Oracle's free cash flow is negative for the fiscal year, with a cash burn of $23.7 billion.
The question for investors is whether Wall Street's expectations for tech companies have become untenable, or if this is a red flag for Oracle shareholders.

The report wasn't bad in any sense. The tech company had record earnings per share, total revenues, and remaining performance obligations for Q4 2026. For the full fiscal year, it was a banner period, with revenues reaching $67.4 billion, a 17% increase. Earnings per share (EPS) were also up 34% to $5.83.
Oracle's outlook for fiscal 2027 is also strong, as the company raised its EPS guidance to $8.05. It also reaffirmed revenue expectations at $90 billion.
To make money, you have to spend money, as the adage goes, and Oracle is doing a lot of that. Capital expenditures exceeded company guidance, and this, along with the additional $40 billion cash commitment for 2027, is what spooked investors.
Still, with an enormous backlog of business, the steep, rapid decline in the stock price feels like an overreaction. It is also similar to what happened with Broadcom (NASDAQ: AVGO) recently. Broadcom's quarterly earnings were strong but fell short of the extraordinarily high bar set by Wall Street analysts. The stock fell precipitously.
For buy-and-hold investors, Oracle's fundamentals remain intact. The sell-off is more of an opportunity than a warning flag.

Oracle's Stock Is Plummeting. Is This an Opportunity or a Red Flag?

Some of the technology world's biggest spenders had a rough week. Oracle sank by a double-digit percentage after pairing record quarterly results with plans to raise tens of billions of dollars in additional financing for its artificial intelligence (AI) data center build-out. Chip stocks fell hard, too, as investors questioned when all of this spending starts paying for itself.
Some investors may think the best way to diversify away from these AI companies is to venture beyond tech. But I actually think one of tech's biggest names offers some good balance to stocks like this. I'm talking bout the $4.3 trillion iPhone-maker: Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL).

Apple has been flagged by some investors in recent years as behind "behind" on AI as other tech giants spend far more to capitalize on opportunities in the AI era. But what if this is actually a strength?
A spending gap in the hundreds of billions
Apple's capital expenditures in fiscal 2025 (the period ended Sept. 27, 2025) totaled about $12.7 billion. Its mega-cap peers -- Microsoft, Alphabet, Meta Platforms, and Amazon -- combined to spend more than $400 billion on the same line item in calendar 2025.
And the gap is set to widen. Amazon alone expects its capital spending to reach about $200 billion this year -- about 16 times what Apple spent in its most recent fiscal year.
But this doesn't mean Apple is ignoring AI. The company is simply approaching it differently. At its developers conference on Monday, Apple unveiled its long-awaited Siri overhaul, powered by Alphabet's Gemini models under a partnership that reportedly costs about $1 billion per year, with the new software arriving this fall. Additionally, Apple's AI effort seems to run largely through its operating budget: research and development spending was $34.6 billion in fiscal 2025 -- nearly three times its capital expenditures -- and it climbed 33% year over year in the company's most recent quarter.
And while peers borrow to build, Apple keeps handing cash back to shareholders. Alongside its fiscal second-quarter results in April (the period ended March 28, 2026), the company announced a new $100 billion share repurchase authorization and raised its dividend 4%. The quarter itself was Apple's best March quarter ever, with revenue climbing 17% year over year to $111.2 billion and earnings per share jumping 22%.
"Our strong business performance during the March quarter generated over $28 billion in operating cash flow and drove new March quarter records for both operating cash flow and EPS," said Apple chief financial officer Kevan Parekh in the company's fiscal second-quarter earnings release.
In other words, the cash that rivals are pouring into data centers is, at Apple, still flowing to shareholders.
The case against patience
Of course, there's a less flattering version of this story.
Apple's revamped Siri runs on models built by a direct rival rather than on technology Apple owns. If AI assistants become the main way people interact with their devices, depending on Alphabet for that critical layer could prove costly. The rival, in effect, now sits inside the product Apple's customers talk to.
And the stakes are enormous. Apple's installed base has surpassed 2.5 billion active devices. That base is a key part of the company's moat -- and it's also what could erode if a competitor's assistant becomes the one consumers actually prefer.
What to watch
Investors should watch two things from here.
The first is how quickly users embrace the new Siri once it ships this fall. This could be revealed in any management commentary in the first quarterlyearnings callfollowing the release of Siri AI.
The second main factor to watch is whether iPhone and services momentum holds up in the upcoming quarterly reports. Sustained double-digit growth in both iPhone and services revenue would suggest customers are buying into Apple's AI strategy.
For now, I think the past week strengthens Apple's case.
Restraint can look like timidity when AI infrastructure stocks are soaring. But when the market starts questioning the spenders' debt loads and cash burn, that same restraint starts to look like discipline. Sure, Apple may still need to prove it can deliver great AI experiences. But isn't letting someone else shoulder hundreds of billions in spending -- while you keep the customer relationship -- the kind of position most businesses dream of?

Apple Is Mostly Sitting Out the AI Spending Arms Race. With AI Stocks Selling Off, That Suddenly Looks Smart.

Investors hunting for bargains in cloud computing suddenly have two big ones to consider. Enterprise software company Oracle (NYSE: ORCL) tumbled this week after its fiscal fourth-quarter report (the period ended May 31, 2026) paired record results with a steep bill for its artificial intelligence (AI) data center expansion. Salesforce (NYSE: CRM), meanwhile, just touched a 52-week low, with shares down about 37% year to date as of this writing amid worries that AI could disrupt traditional subscription software.
The two sell-offs have very different causes. One company is being punished for spending too much on AI. The other is being punished by the fear that AI undermines its core product.

So, which beaten-down stock is the better buy?
Let's size up each company and then pick a winner.
Oracle
Oracle's growth right now is impressive. Fiscal fourth-quarter revenue rose 21% year over year to $19.2 billion, with total cloud revenue jumping 47% and cloud infrastructure revenue surging 93%. Even more striking, the company's remaining performance obligations (contracted revenue it hasn't yet delivered) ended the quarter at $638 billion, up from $553 billion just three months earlier. For fiscal 2027, management confirmed its forecast of about $90 billion in total revenue, implying growth of about 34%.
But delivering that backlog is brutally expensive.
Oracle generated $32 billion in operating cash flow in fiscal 2026, yet its free cash flow was negative $23.7 billion as it spent heavily on data centers. Oracle raised $43 billion in debt and $5 billion in equity during the year, and it expects to raise about $40 billion more in fiscal 2027. On the company's fiscal fourth-quarterearnings call management indicated net capital spending could reach about $70 billion this fiscal year.
Even after this week's drop, the stock's valuation isn't exactly cheap. Shares trade at a price-to-earnings ratio of about 32 and a forward price-to-earnings ratio of about 23 as of this writing. Investors, in other words, are still paying a premium for growth that requires enormous amounts of borrowed money to deliver.
Salesforce
The software-as-a-service company's story is quite different.
Growth is the concern -- fiscal first-quarter revenue (the period ended April 30, 2026) rose 13% year over year to $11.1 billion, helped along by the company's Informatica acquisition. But the business generates substantial cash. First-quarter free cash flow was $6.6 billion, and the company returned $27.5 billion to shareholders during the period, including a $25 billion accelerated share repurchase funded largely with new debt.
Interestingly, the AI fears hammering the stock haven't shown up in Salesforce's AI results. Agentforce, the company's AI agent product, reached $1.2 billion in annual recurring revenue in the fiscal first quarter, up 205% year over year.
"We remain confident in delivering organic revenue acceleration in the second half of FY27, driven by growth in Sales, Service, Slack, Agentforce, and Data 360," said Salesforce president and chief financial and operating officer Robin Washington in the company's fiscal first-quarter earnings release.
With the stock near its 52-week low, Salesforce trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of about 19 as of this writing -- a good-looking valuation considering the company's strong business economics and its solid growth. And this valuation is well below what investors are paying for Oracle.
The better buy
For me, this one comes down to risk versus price.
Oracle offers the faster growth by far, and its $638 billion backlog is a remarkable asset. But converting it into profit demands years of heavy spending, financed with more debt and equity, before shareholders see the payoff. And most of the recent additions to that backlog have come from large AI contracts, concentrating the risk.
Meanwhile, Salesforce makes money today and returns it to shareholders, all while growing its AI products at a triple-digit rate. Yet the market is pricing the stock as if its best days are behind it.
Neither choice is risk-free. If AI demand keeps compounding for years, Oracle could deliver far greater upside than its steadier rival. And if AI agents really do erode demand for subscription software over time, Salesforce's discount could prove deserved.
But at today's prices, I think Salesforce is the better buy. Paying about 19 times earnings for a highly profitable business with accelerating AI revenue strikes me as more attractive than paying a premium for a company that must borrow billions to fund its future. Sometimes the better opportunity is the one the market seems to hate the most.

Better Buy After the Cloud Stock Sell-Off: Oracle or Salesforce?

Bloom Energy's first-quarter revenue soared 130% year over year.

The numbers behind the artificial intelligence (AI) build-out keep getting bigger. On Tuesday, chip designer Broadcom announced a financing platform with investment giants Apollo Global Management and Blackstone designed to enable more than 20 gigawatts of AI compute capacity through 2028, launching with an initial $35 billion tranche.
Even automakers want in. General Motors said this week it is developing a sodium-ion battery (a chemistry built on abundant sodium rather than scarcer lithium) aimed at energy storage for data centers and the grid.

All of this demand is landing on an electric grid that can take years to expand. Securing a grid connection for a large data center campus can be a multiyear wait, and the equipment needed to build new power plants is in short supply. That mismatch is where Bloom Energy (NYSE: BE), GE Vernova (NYSE: GEV), and Vistra (NYSE: VST) come in.
Here's a closer look at how each company is positioned to power the build-out.
1. Bloom Energy
Bloom makes solid oxide fuel cells -- systems that generate electricity on-site from natural gas without combustion -- letting data centers skip the wait for a grid hookup. Bloom's first-quarter revenue soared 130% year over year to $751.1 million, driven by a 208% jump in product revenue. The company also posted net income of $70.7 million, reversing a year-ago loss. And management raised its full-year outlook, now expecting 2026 revenue of $3.4 billion to $3.8 billion -- about 80% growth at the midpoint, up from prior guidance of about 60%.
In April, Oracle said Bloom fuel cells will fully power Project Jupiter, its AI data center campus in New Mexico, with up to 2.45 gigawatts of capacity, replacing the gas turbines and diesel generators originally planned for the site. Notably, management said more than half of Bloom's data center backlog comes from customers other than Oracle.
"Bloom is rapidly becoming the standard and go-to choice for on-site power," said Bloom founder and CEO KR Sridhar during the company's first-quarter earnings call.
2. GE Vernova
While Bloom helps data centers bypass the grid, GE Vernova supplies the grid itself -- along with the gas turbines utilities are waiting in line to order. The power equipment maker's first-quarter orders surged 71% on an organic basis to $18.3 billion, pushing its total backlog to $163 billion. Its gas turbine backlog and slot reservation agreements grew from 83 gigawatts to 100 gigawatts in a single quarter, and management now expects to reach at least 110 gigawatts by the end of 2026.
GE Vernova's electrification segment, which makes grid equipment like transformers and switchgear, booked $2.4 billion of equipment orders to support data centers during the first quarter -- more than in all of 2025. Further, the company's free cash flow more than quadrupled year over year to $4.8 billion, and management raised its 2026 guidance.
3. Vistra
Vistra is one of the largest competitive power producers in the U.S., with a generation fleet spanning natural gas and nuclear. And AI's biggest spenders are locking up that fleet years in advance. Last year, the company signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with Amazon's cloud unit for up to 1,200 megawatts of nuclear power from its Comanche Peak plant in Texas. It also signed 20-year agreements to supply Meta Platforms with 2,609 megawatts of nuclear energy and capacity from its plants in the eastern U.S.
The company is adding natural gas capacity, too, with its pending acquisition of about 5,500 megawatts of generation from Cogentrix, targeted to close in the second half of this year. Last month, Vistra reported first-quarter ongoing operations adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) of about $1.5 billion and reaffirmed its full-year forecast of $6.8 billion to $7.6 billion.
What could trip up the power trade
Of course, these stocks face risks. Project timing, for instance, is one. In fact, Bloom Energy shares fell this week after a partner reportedly paused work on a data center site in Wyoming. Additionally, these companies operate in highly regulated markets.
The bigger risk may be the demand side itself. All three stocks have rallied on the assumption that AI capital expenditures keep climbing, and AI infrastructure stocks have pulled back recently on concerns about the pace of that spending. If the build-out decelerates meaningfully, backlogs could stop growing and these valuations could compress quickly.
Still, the demand signals keep arriving week after week, and from new directions -- financiers one day, automakers the next. For investors who believe the electricity bottleneck is real and durable, these three companies arguably offer a more grounded way to invest in the AI boom than chasing the chipmakers themselves.

Breaking Down Earnings Season Simply

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Friday rose +0.50%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) rose +0.70%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) rose +0.64%. June E-mini S&P futures (ESM26) rose +0.65%, and June E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQM26) rose +0.87%.
Stocks on Friday extended Thursday’s rally on hopes that the US and Iran will sign an interim peace agreement within the next several days, ending the military hostilities, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and ending the US blockade on Iran and its oil exports. Negotiations would then begin on the more intractable issues, such as sanctions against Iran, the release of $24 billion of frozen Iranian assets, and the resolution of Iranian nuclear issues. However, Iran said its leaders still need to make a final decision on the proposed interim peace deal.

Stocks started to rally on Thursday after President Trump canceled planned military strikes against Iran, citing "discussions" with the Iranian leadership. He added that the “time and place of the signing" of a negotiated end to the war would "be announced shortly."
WTI crude oil prices (CLN26) fell -3.23% on Friday on the hopes for a near-term US-Iran agreement and a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
In positive news for stocks, the University of Michigan’s June US Consumer Sentiment Index rose +4.1 to 48.9, which was stronger than expectations for a rise to 46.0. Also, the University of Michigan’s June 1-year inflation expectations rate eased to +4.6% from +4.8% in May, and was weaker than expectations of +4.9%. The June 5-10 year inflation expectations rate eased to +3.4% from +3.9% in May, weaker than expectations of +3.8%.
The markets are discounting a 4% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on June 16-17.
Overseas stock markets closed higher. The Euro Stoxx 50 rose +2.16%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +1.12%. Japan’s Nikkei-225 Stock Average closed up +2.81%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU6) fell -5 ticks, and the 10-year T-note yield rose +2.2 bp to 4.483%. T-notes saw weakness as the 10-year inflation expectations rate rose +1.8 bp to 2.323%, despite the drop in oil prices. The T-note market remains worried about inflation pressures, which are likely to remain sticky even after the Strait of Hormuz reopens. The T-note market had some carry-over weakness from Thursday, when demand was lackluster for the Treasury’s 30-year bond auction.
European government bond yields traded lower. The 10-year German bund yield fell -3.6 bp to 2.995%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell -6.9 bp to 4.836%.
On Thursday, the ECB, as expected, raised the deposit facility rate by +25 bp to 2.25% from 2.00% and said, "The outlook remains uncertain, with upside risks for inflation and downside risks for economic growth." Swaps are discounting a 37% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on July 23.
US Stock Movers
Space Exploration Technologies Corp (SPCX), doing business as SpaceX, started trading Friday morning and closed the day at $161 per share, up +19% from Thursday’s IPO of $135. The IPO was more than four times oversubscribed, indicating strong demand for the stock. SpaceX's favorable showing on Friday was positive for investor sentiment and could help the upcoming IPOs of AI companies Anthropic and OpenAI.
Space-linked stocks traded lower despite the favorable SpaceX debut, with EchoStar (SATS) and Rocket Lab (RKLB) both closing down about -10%.
Chip stocks recovered from early losses and closed mostly higher. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) rose +1.59% on Friday, adding to Thursday’s sharp rally of +8.39%. The chip rally was sparked by signs that AI spending is continuing after Oracle on Thursday reported quarterly capital expenditures that were higher than expected, driven by increased data center spending. Chip leaders on Friday included a rally of +6.51% in Intel (INTC) and +5.55% in KLA-Tencor Corp (KLAC). AMD (AMD)and Qualcomm (QCOM) both closed up more than +4%.
Adobe (ADBE) fell more than -6% after CFO Dan Durn said he would leave the company on June 15, following news earlier this year that Adobe’s CEO would resign. The Adobe news put continued downward pressure on software stocks, which were undercut on Thursday by negative earnings news from Oracle (ORCL). Autodesk (ADSK) fell more than -3%, and Palantir Technologies (PLTR) fell more than -2%.
Airline stocks saw continued support after oil prices on Friday extended Thursday’s losses. Southwest Airlines (LUV), United Airlines (UAL), and American Airlines (AAL) all rallied by more than +2%.
Astera Labs (ALAB), CoreWeave (CRWV), Nebius Group (NBIS), Rocket Lab (RKLB), and Teradyn (TER) saw support on Friday after Nasdaq announced on Thursday that those stocks will join the Nasdaq 100 Index, effective at the market open on June 22. Stocks leaving the Nasdaq 100 include Charter Communications (CHTR), Cognizant Technology Solutions (CTSH), Insmed (INSM), Verisk Analytics (VRSK), and Zscaler (ZS).
Travelers (TRV) rose +0.18% despite news that Barclays cut its rating on the stock to underweight from equal-weight, citing a downbeat outlook for profits in the property and casualty sector.

Stocks Rally on Hopes for a Near-term US-Iran Interim Peace Agreement

Oracle ORCL shares were down following very strong quarterly results that showed impressive cloud momentum and steady customer diversification beyond OpenAI in its AI-centric backlog.
The negative market reaction reflected its ever-rising capital intensity, with capex for the year raised once again, pushing Oracle’s free cash flows further into negative territory. Oracle plans to raise about $40 billion to fund its capex this year through a combination of debt and equity instruments, with dilution risk becoming a bigger risk for the stock. Management expects peak capex outlays through the following fiscal year, with the pace declining in the outer years as the installed base matures.
Unlike the dramatic AI-driven acceleration in Oracle’s quarterly numbers, Adobe's ADBE report showed the company monetizing AI through higher engagement, greater user retention, and premium features, in contrast to many free competing offerings that lack enterprise controls, licensing protections, and workflow integration.
Adobe shares have lost more than two-thirds of their value over the last two years, as many in the market are skeptical of the company’s ability to maintain profitability in the coming AI world. Uncertainty around leadership transition adds to these headwinds.
The Oracle report was for its fiscal quarter ending in May, which we count as part of the June-quarter tally. We now have five S&P 500 members, including Oracle and Adobe, that have reported such fiscal May-quarter results. The others are Costco, AutoZone, and Lennar. By the time the big banks report in mid-July, we will have seen Q2 results from almost two dozen index members with fiscal quarters ending in May, including Jabil, CarMax, and Accenture this week.
Looking at 2026 Q2 as a whole, total S&P 500 earnings are expected to increase by +22.2% from the same period last year on +10.9% higher revenues.
The chart below shows Q2 earnings and revenue growth expectations in the context of growth over the preceding four quarters and what is expected over the next three quarters.

The revisions trend remains positive, similar to what we experienced in the last two quarters as well. Aggregate earnings estimates for the S&P 500 index have steadily moved higher since the quarter got underway in April, as the chart below shows.

Q2 earnings estimates have increased for 5 of the 16 Zacks sectors since the quarter began, offsetting negative revisions in the remaining 11 sectors.
The Energy sector has enjoyed the most obvious earnings outlook upgrade, with aggregate earnings estimates for the sector up more than +80% since the start of April. Earnings for the Zacks Energy sector are currently expected to increase by +116.4% from the year-earlier period. Other sectors enjoying favorable estimate revisions include Tech, Basic Materials, Utilities, and Business Services.
Excluding the positive revisions to either the Energy or Tech sectors, the aggregate Q2 revisions trend would have been negative.
Of the 11 sectors whose estimates have been under pressure since the start of April, the ones experiencing the most negative revisions are Transportation, Medical, Consumer Discretionary, Autos, and Construction.

In terms of index ‘EPS’, the above growth rates imply $319.96 per index ‘share’ in 2026, up $264.38 in 2025.
The revisions trend for full-year 2026 is even more positive than we noted in the case of 2026 Q2, with estimates for 11 of the 16 Zacks sectors going up since the start of March 2026. The Energy, Tech, and Basic Materials sectors are the most notable beneficiaries of the improving earnings outlook, but estimates have increased across the board.
The sectors that have suffered negative estimate revisions since the start of March are Transportation, Autos, Consumer Discretionary, Consumer Staples, and Medical.

2026 Q2 Earnings Season Scorecard
We are in that part of the reporting cycle when the preceding earnings season (2026 Q1, in this case) has not yet fully ended, even as the coming earnings season (2026 Q2) has already begun, as we noted earlier.
Through Friday, June 12th, we have seen fiscal May-quarter results from 5 S&P 500 members – Oracle, Adobe, Costco, AutoZone, and Lennar. Total earnings for these 5 companies are up +18.6% from the same period last year on +11.5% higher revenues, with 80% beating EPS estimates and 60% beating revenue estimates.
The comparison charts below put the growth rates for the companies that have reported with what we had seen from this same group of companies in other recent periods.

Thursday’s rally was sparked by signs that AI spending is continuing after Oracle reported quarterly capital expenditures that were higher than expected, driven by increased data center spending. Chip leaders today include Arm Holdings (ARM)with a gain of more than +10%, and gains of more than +5% in Qualcomm (QCOM), AMD (AMD), and Intel (INTC).
Adobe (ADBE) is down more than -7% after CFO Dan Durn said he would leave the company on June 15, following news earlier this year that Adobe’s CEO would resign. The Adobe news put continued downward pressure on software stocks, which were undercut on Thursday by negative earnings news from Oracle (ORCL). Autodesk (ADSK) is down more than -3% and Intuit (INTU) is down by more than -2%.
Airline stocks are seeing continued support after oil prices today moved lower, adding to Thursday’s decline. United Airlines (UAL), American Airlines (AAL), and Southwest Airlines (LUV) are all up more than +3%.
Energy stocks and service providers are trading higher with today’s continued sell-off in crude oil prices. Occidental Petroleum (OXY), Valero (VLO), and Marathon Petroleum (MPC) are all up more than +2%.
Astera Labs (ALAB), CoreWeave (CRWV), Nebius Group (NBIS), Rocket Lab (RKLB), and Teradyn (TER) are seeing support today after Nasdaq announced on Thursday that those stocks will join the Nasdaq 100 Index, effective at the market open on June 22. Stocks leaving the Nasdaq 100 include Charter Communications (CHTR), Cognizant Technology Solutions (CTSH), Insmed (INSM), Verisk Analytics (VRSK), and Zscaler (ZS).
Travelers (TRV) is seeing downward pressure after Barclays cut its rating on the stock to underweight from equal-weight due to a downbeat outlook for profits in the property and casualty sector.
