Oracle Corporation was founded in 1977 and is headquartered in Austin, Texas.

Oracle appears to be a mature, profitable business with strong margins, but the market is already pricing in a very high level of quality. Revenue has been growing in recent periods, and EBITDA and operating profit have also increased, confirming the resilience of the core model and supporting the valuation. The operating margin of around 30.6% and net margin of about 25.2% are noticeably above industry benchmarks, while ROE of nearly 50% indicates efficient use of capital. At the same time, ROA and ROI are also above the median, but not enough to fully offset the expensive valuation on revenue and book value. P/S and P/B remain significantly above the industry, which points to a quality premium and limits the potential for further upward re-rating. P/E, on the other hand, is below the industry median, but this does not look like a clear undervaluation because profitability is already very high and some multiples remain stretched. Leverage is the main limiting factor: debt/equity is significantly above the industry, debt in absolute terms is large and continues to rise, and liquidity is only around 1.1 on the current ratio with a zero quick ratio. This increases sensitivity to interest rates, refinancing, and any disruptions in cash flow. Dividend yield remains low, so the dividend factor provides only modest support to the valuation. Growth in assets, equity, and cash position is a positive signal, but it does not fully alleviate balance sheet concerns. Overall, the fundamentals are more high-quality than cheap: the business is strong on earnings and margins, but the valuation no longer looks like a discount, and the debt burden calls for caution. For an investor, this means the company’s base case remains constructive, but upward revision of the target price is limited, and a slight discount to the current forecast looks more realistic.

Oracle has strong margins and earnings growth, but its high P/S and P/B valuation, together with significant debt, limits upside re-rating potential.

Larry Ellison owns 1.16 billion shares of Oracle (NYSE: ORCL) through his family trust -- 40.6% of the company, worth about $139 billion at the current share price.
In December, he put a piece of that fortune behind a media deal. Warner Bros. Discovery's board had questioned whether the equity backing Paramount Skydance's all-cash offer was solid, and it wanted more than a trust's balance sheet behind the bid. So Ellison gave an irrevocable personal guarantee covering $40.4 billion of the offer's equity financing, plus any damages claims against Paramount. He also agreed not to revoke the trust, or move assets out of it, while the deal is pending. Paramount published records confirming the trust's Oracle stake and noted that all of the trust's material liabilities are publicly disclosed.

At the time, the guarantee was a show of strength. Today, however, it looks different. The tech company's stock trades near $120 as of this writing, after touching a 52-week low of $114.50 on Tuesday, down about 65% from its high of $345.72. The promise hasn't changed, but the wealth behind it has.
Here's a closer look at what that means for people who own Oracle stock.
A promise that now runs to 2027
Paramount's pursuit of Warner Bros. Discovery became a signed agreement in February. The price is $31.00 per share in cash, valuing the streaming service and studio owner at $81 billion in equity. The Justice Department cleared the deal in June, and the European Commission approved it on July 22, subject to conditions on film distribution in Europe.
Then, twelve state attorneys general, led by California, sued this month to block the merger, arguing it would harm competition in movies and entertainment. A federal judge froze the transaction while the challenge proceeds.
And on Friday, July 24, Paramount agreed the deal will not close before June 1, 2027, or five days after a ruling on the merits of the case, whichever comes first.
That timeline matters for Oracle shareholders because the guarantee stays open while the case runs -- potentially for almost another year, against a stock that keeps falling. At Oracle's 52-week high, Ellison's stake was worth about $400 billion, and a $40.4 billion promise amounted to a tenth of it. At the current price, the stake is worth about $139 billion, and the same promise is nearly a third.
The collateral question
Whether the guarantee is secured by Oracle shares is not something the public record answers. What the record does show is how much of Ellison's stake is already spoken for.
Oracle's proxy statement, filed in September, disclosed that 346 million of his shares (about 30% of his position) were pledged as collateral securing personal debts, including various lines of credit.
At the current share price, those pledged shares are worth about $40 billion. In other words, the collateral behind Ellison's existing borrowing has shrunk to roughly the size of the new promise he layered on top of it.
Oracle's board, for its part, has said the pledged shares secure personal term loans used to fund outside business ventures, that none of them collateralize margin accounts, and that it believes Ellison can repay without selling a share. But that assessment was published in September, before the guarantee existed.
And if the deal closes, the $40.4 billion has to fund. Nobody outside Ellison's circle knows exactly how. His fortune, though, is concentrated in the trust's Oracle stake, and the obvious routes are borrowing against more shares or selling some. Either way, more of the company's stock could end up tied to one man's media ambitions.
Most proxy statements don't need a section on the founder's personal borrowing. Oracle's has one, and it gets more relevant every quarter.
To be fair, the guarantee doesn't touch Oracle's operations. Demand for the company's cloud computing capacity will decide the business's future, not a Hollywood courtroom.
The same goes for its enormous bet on artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. Next to those forces, the founder's personal balance sheet is a side story.
At about 14 times forward earnings, the market has arguably discounted plenty already. But a cheap multiple usually comes with an explanation attached, and this one carries several. The Ellison guarantee is the piece shareholders can do the least about: a claim on the controlling stockholder's wealth, sized at nearly a third of his stake, waiting on a lawsuit with a 2027 outside date. Personally, I'd want the courtroom resolved, and the funding plan for that $40.4 billion made public before treating the discount as an opportunity.

Snowflake is facing stiff competition from major players like Amazon AMZN and Oracle ORCL, which are also expanding their footprint in the AI space.
Amazon’s AI initiatives gained significant momentum during the first quarter of 2026. Amazon’s cloud computing platform, Amazon Web Services’ chips business, including Graviton, Trainium, and Nitro, exceeded a $20 billion annual revenue run rate and is growing triple-digit percentages year over year.
Oracle’s expanding portfolio has been noteworthy. In June 2026, Oracle introduced Oracle OPERA Cloud Assistant, a suite of AI-powered capabilities built into OPERA Cloud that automates guest room assignments, generates AI-driven rate descriptions, supports multilingual operations across 230 countries and territories and gives hotel staff real-time operational guidance.

Oracle (NYSE: ORCL) stock has navigated a volatile path throughout 2026. Shares began the year around $196, eventually climbing to a high of $248 amid optimism around artificial intelligence (AI) cloud contracts.
However, over the last couple of months, Oracle stock has cratered -- plummeting more than 50% and collapsing to a 52-week low. This recent trough may invite speculation that the dip is buyable, but the combination of extraordinary spending needs and uncertainties around external financing environments suggests otherwise.

Oracle is generating record growth, but...
Oracle's fiscal fourth-quarter 2026 results showcased remarkable expansion in its AI business. Total revenue during the quarter reached $19.2 billion, up 21% year over year. Sales from cloud infrastructure surged to $5.8 billion, a 93% increase year over year. For the full fiscal year, revenue climbed 17% to $67.4 billion while total cloud (infrastructure services and application software) advanced 39% to $34.0 billion.
Remaining performance obligations were the real standout, soaring to $638 billion -- up 363% year over year. These deals continue to be fueled by massive multi-year AI training and inference deals with AI developers.
While these figures are staggering by any measure, Oracle has continued to fall. The reason is simple: Investors are less focused on the company's backlog and more concerned about the capital intensity required to deliver it.
...the costs of infrastructure are mounting, and...
Oracle's capital expenditures (capex) tell the real story behind the company's AI-driven growth. Fiscal 2026 capex ballooned to $55.7 billion, more than doubling the prior year's $21.2 billion outlay. The surge is driven almost exclusively by the accelerating build-outs of AI data centers and the acquisition of high-performance computing clusters needed to support the cloud backlog.
These investments produced a severe cash-flow deficit. Free cash flow for fiscal 2026 turned negative at $23.7 billion, even as operating cash flow itself rose 54% to $32.0 billion. The disparity between robust operating cash and negative free cash flow leaves Oracle heavily dependent on external capital markets to keep its infrastructure program on track.
...Fed Chair Kevin Warsh may throw cold water on the AI revolution
In principle, Oracle must spend aggressively to convert its backlog into realized revenue. The scale and method of funding, however, introduce meaningful risk for shareholders.
During fiscal 2026, Oracle issued $43 billion of debt. Looking ahead, management has signaled plans to raise roughly $40 billion more in fiscal 2027, including a $20 billion at-the-market (ATM) equity program authorized back in February. This ATM facility creates a mechanism for dilution whenever the share price recovers.
Another layer of uncertainty comes from interest rate dynamics. While some economists still anticipate possible rate cuts later this year, new Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh may have other plans. Rate hikes are very much on the table, and any sustained period of rising interest rates would increase the cost of Oracle's already substantial debt load.
This could potentially force a slowdown in the company's data center expansion. In turn, a deceleration in capital spending would delay the conversion of Oracle's infrastructure backlog into growth, undermining the very narrative supporting the bull thesis.
For this reason, Oracle's plummeting share price reflects more than temporary pessimism -- it prices in the elevated risk that the path to converting record backlog into sustainable profitability remains expensive, dilutive, and contingent on favorable financing conditions.

With the 2026 capex program already guided toward $200 billion, investors are likely to scrutinize whether AWS margin gains and advertising strength can continue offsetting elevated depreciation, satellite investment and tariff-related pricing friction heading into the back half of the year.

Yet elevated capital spending, shrinking free cash flow, tariff-driven pricing pressure on third-party sellers, and roughly a billion dollars in incremental satellite costs continue weighing on near-term profitability. The stock's premium valuation leaves little room for execution missteps, while competition intensifies across cloud, advertising and quick-commerce from well-capitalized rivals. Given this balance of strong fundamentals against stretched pricing and margin uncertainty, investors may be better served holding existing positions or awaiting a more attractive entry point before adding fresh exposure.
Conclusion
Amazon's diversified growth engines and AWS momentum remain compelling, but elevated capital spending, tariff-driven cost pressures and a premium valuation warrant caution. With stiff competition across cloud, advertising and e-commerce, and free cash flow under pressure, investors may be best served holding existing positions rather than initiating new ones, or awaiting a more attractive entry point ahead of second-quarter 2026 results.

The comparison feels especially timely now. Oracle just closed fiscal 2026 with record cloud growth and an unprecedented order backlog, while Alibaba wrapped its fiscal year with accelerating cloud and AI revenues even as profitability absorbed the cost of aggressive spending. Both companies have used recent weeks to unveil fresh AI models, chips and partnerships, underscoring how central this race is to their strategies.
Let's delve deep and closely compare the fundamentals of the two stocks to determine which one is a better investment now.
The Case for ORCL Stock
Oracle delivered a standout fiscal 2026, with total revenues climbing 17% to a record $67.4 billion and cloud revenues surging 39% to $34 billion. The real headline, though, is Remaining Performance Obligations, which ended the year at $638 billion, up 363% year over year and $85 billion sequentially, reflecting a wave of large-scale AI contracts. Encouragingly, prepaid and customer-supplied hardware within these contracts now totals $75 billion, meaningfully easing the capital Oracle itself must raise to build out AI data centers. Momentum has carried into the new fiscal year.
At Google Cloud Next 2026, Oracle deepened its partnership with Google, integrating Gemini Enterprise directly with Oracle AI Database so customers can reason over business data without duplication. Oracle also expanded its NVIDIA collaboration for scalable AI supercomputing, launched an AI-native builder experience for Fusion Applications letting developers create agentic apps using familiar tools, expanded its Defense Ecosystem, and became a founding partner of IMSA Labs, applying racetrack telemetry to harden its Cloud Infrastructure. OCI continues broadening its AI stack too, adding models like GLM 5.2 and expanding governance and security controls for enterprise customers.
Management also flagged that a new AI-driven patient care management system should push Oracle Health's overall growth to double digits in fiscal 2027, and the company also plans to raise an additional $20 billion in equity and debt to keep pace with demand. With profit guidance raised alongside steady revenue guidance, Oracle's expanding backlog, capital-efficient contract structure and widening enterprise AI footprint make a compelling growth case.
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for ORCL’s fiscal 2027 earnings is pegged at $8.03, which suggests 5.24% growth over the figure reported in fiscal 2026.

The Case for BABA Stock
Alibaba's fiscal 2026 close showed genuine cloud and AI momentum alongside real financial strain. Cloud Intelligence Group external revenue growth accelerated to 40%, with AI-related products now representing 30% of that revenue, and international commerce wholesale revenues also rose 9% on stronger cross-border value-added services.
Alibaba has kept pace on models, unveiling Qwen3.7-Max in May and previewing the 2.4-trillion-parameter, fully multimodal Qwen3.8 at the World AI Conference in July, now accessible to developers through its Qoder coding platform, while its Zhenwu chips now power more than 100,000 deployments across over 30 automakers and autonomous-driving companies building intelligent-driving systems. The company also launched Accio Work, extending its established AI sourcing agent, Accio, into a fuller agentic platform covering the entire operating lifecycle of small cross-border businesses. Management struck a bullish long-term tone, expecting AI-related annualized recurring revenues to reach RMB30 billion by year-end and signaling that capital expenditure will likely overshoot its original three-year RMB380 billion target, since compute demand is expected to be tenfold 2022 levels within the coming years.
That conviction, however, comes with visible near-term costs. Overall revenues grew just 3% year over year, while adjusted EBITA and net income both fell sharply as spending on AI, cloud infrastructure and instant commerce competition intensified. Alibaba did approve an annual dividend of $1.05 per ADS for fiscal 2026, a modest shareholder-friendly offset. The overall setup still leaves Alibaba with credible AI upside tempered by real near-term margin pressure and a still-escalating, open-ended investment cycle whose payoff timeline remains uncertain.
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for fiscal 2027 earnings is pegged at $6.88 per share, down 5.2% over the past 30 days, indicating a 76.86% year-over-year increase.

On valuation, Oracle trades at a discounted forward 12-month price-to-earnings ratio of 14.18x, while Alibaba commands a premium 14.85x multiple, suggesting the market is pricing in more optimism for Alibaba's AI-driven turnaround relative to Oracle's heavier near-term spending burden.

Price action, however, tells a very different story: Oracle shares have plunged 38.5% year to date, underperforming Alibaba's 21.5% gain over the same period. That divergence has left Oracle trading cheaper despite stronger backlog visibility and raised guidance, while Alibaba's rally has already priced in much of its recent AI momentum, model launches and chip progress, leaving comparatively less room for further re-rating.

Conclusion
Oracle's record RPO backlog, capital-efficient AI contracts, raised profit guidance, widening Google and NVIDIA partnerships, and discounted valuation after a sharp pullback together give it a clear fundamental edge over Alibaba, whose AI and cloud progress is genuine but still weighs on near-term profitability amid an open-ended, escalating capex cycle and intensifying domestic competition. SAP SE SAP is tying cloud ERP migration to embedded AI, enterprise data and workflow automation. The strategy is meant to move customers from legacy systems into a cleaner cloud model that can support more autonomous business processes.
The investor debate is straightforward. Cloud and AI demand are improving SAP’s growth profile, but software license and services revenues are still declining as the business model shifts.
SAP Builds Around the Autonomous Enterprise
SAP’s AI strategy centers on the Autonomous Suite and Business AI Platform. The company is embedding AI across finance, procurement, supply chain, human resources and customer operations, using enterprise applications as the operating layer.
Joule Studio forms the build layer for creating and extending AI agents. SAP Business Data Cloud supplies business context, while the run-and-govern layer helps customers deploy, manage and govern agents at scale.
SAP Business Data Cloud Gains Early Traction
SAP Business Data Cloud generated approximately €2 billion in total contract value within its first year. That early adoption supports the case that customers want AI tied to governed enterprise data, not disconnected models.
More than 90% of SAP’s 50 largest second-quarter deals included AI and SAP Business Data Cloud. That mix gives management confidence in second-half demand as Business AI reaches more customers.
SAP Cash Flow Funds Innovation and Buybacks
SAP reaffirmed its expectation for approximately €10 billion in 2026 free cash flow. That cash generation gives the company room to invest in product innovation, acquisitions and business development while navigating the cloud transition.

Capital returns remain part of the story. SAP announced a €10 billion share repurchase program running through the end of 2027, and as of June 30, had repurchased more than 16.28 million shares for approximately €2.6 billion.
SAP Faces Migration and Execution Risks
The shift away from legacy software still has costs. Second-quarter software license revenues declined 32% year over year to €0.13 billion; services revenues fell 3% to €1 billion and cloud backlog growth is expected to moderate as the business scales.
Acquisition-related dilution also tempers the outlook. SAP expects Dremio and Prior Labs to reduce 2026 operating profit by more than €100 million, while competition remains intense from providers such as Oracle Corporation ORCL, which also embeds AI agents into cloud applications.
Regulated enterprise deals can take longer to negotiate, deploy and ramp. Salesforce, Inc. CRM, through Agentforce, adds another competitive reference point in enterprise AI, particularly where customers evaluate agent platforms tied to workflow automation.
Geopolitical uncertainty, cybersecurity exposure, pricing pressure and changing customer budgets remain risks. SAP also noted that its outlook assumes a near-term de-escalation of tensions in the Middle East.
SAP Signals Point to a Cautious Near-Term View
SAP’s long-term growth case rests on a clear shift toward cloud ERP, trusted data and AI-enabled workflows. The near-term stock setup is less supportive because estimated momentum and share-price timing remain weak.

How SAP's AI and Cloud Strategy Is Reshaping Its Growth Outlook Now

SAP SE SAP faces a harder investor debate after a steep share-price reset and a reduced profit outlook for 2026. The selloff has lowered the valuation, but weaker earnings momentum keeps the buy case from being straightforward.
The longer-term story still rests on cloud ERP migration, AI adoption and cash generation. The near-term question is whether those strengths can outweigh guidance pressure, integration costs and negative estimate revisions.
SAP Valuation Reflects a Sharp Reset
SAP shares have fallen 29.6% year to date and 40.5% over the trailing 12 months. That decline has pulled expectations down sharply and shifted the debate from growth scarcity to whether the reset is deep enough.
The stock trades at 18.68 times forward earnings. That multiple needs to be judged against the software sub-industry, the broader technology sector and the S&P 500 benchmarks, since SAP still carries a premium tied to its cloud transition and enterprise software position.
SAP Backlog Supports Future Revenue
SAP’s current cloud backlog stood at €22.9 billion, up 27% year over year. That backlog gives investors a clearer view into contracted future cloud revenues than traditional license-heavy software models typically provide.
Cloud ERP Suite adoption remains important to that visibility. RISE with SAP and GROW with SAP continue to support customer migration to cloud ERP, helping SAP convert legacy enterprise relationships into recurring cloud demand.
Oracle Corporation ORCL remains a relevant comparison because its Fusion applications also target cloud ERP, finance, supply chain and human capital management customers. Oracle’s embedded AI push underscores how competitive the market for enterprise workflow automation has become.
SAP Profit Guidance Limits the Upside
The main offset is the lowered 2026 non-IFRS operating profit guidance from €11.9–€12.3 billion to €11.8–€12.2 billion. That reduction narrows the room for positive earnings surprises at a time when investors are already questioning the speed of cloud-led margin expansion.

Dremio and Prior Labs are expected to lower annual profit by more than €100 million because of integration costs and ongoing investment. The deals may deepen SAP’s data and AI capabilities, but the near-term effect is dilution rather than margin relief.
SAP Presents a Mixed Risk-Reward Case
SAP’s $184 price target compares with a reported share price of $171.01. The implied upside is modest, which limits the argument for chasing the stock even after the sharp pullback.
Free cash flow and buybacks still provide support. SAP reaffirmed its ability to fund innovation and shareholder returns, but declining legacy revenue and revenue acceleration that is now expected in 2027 leave the stock dependent on execution.
Microsoft Corporation MSFT is another key enterprise software reference point because Dynamics 365, Power Platform and Copilot offerings compete for business application and workflow automation budgets. Its presence raises the bar for SAP’s AI monetization and customer retention.
SAP Scores Argue for Investor Patience
The bottom line is that SAP’s lower valuation is not enough by itself to make the stock a clear buy. The cloud backlog, AI opportunity and cash flow profile support the long-term case, but the profit cut and modest price-target upside argue for selectivity.

Is SAP Stock a Buy After the 2026 Selloff and Profit Outlook Cut?

SAP SE SAP is leaning into agentic AI as enterprise software shifts from record-keeping systems toward autonomous workflows. Its strategy ties AI assistants, trusted business data and cloud ERP migration tools into one operating model.
The opportunity is long dated. By 2030, management expects cloud growth to rely more on consumption, usage and value-based pricing than traditional seat expansion.
SAP Scales Agentic AI Across Enterprise Workflows
SAP plans to release nearly 50 AI assistants by the end of the third quarter. It also expects to support more than 400 Autonomous Suite agents by year-end, giving customers a broader automation layer inside core business processes.
The company is embedding AI across finance, procurement, supply chain, human resources and customer operations. The goal is not a standalone chatbot layer, but AI that works within applications that already hold business context, transaction history and governance controls.
SAP Shifts Toward Usage-Based Cloud Revenue
Management expects SAP’s cloud revenue mix to shift meaningfully by 2030. Consumption-based and non-seat-based models are expected to drive most incremental cloud growth as AI and data adoption increase.
That would mark a different growth model from conventional software seats. Seat-based revenue is expected to stabilize, while value- and usage-driven pricing becomes a larger contributor as customers use more AI, data and automation inside SAP’s cloud suite.
SAP Data Deals Strengthen the AI Platform
SAP’s recent data moves support that strategy. Dremio adds data lakehouse capabilities that enable real-time analytics across SAP and non-SAP data without requiring data movement or conversion.
Reltio and Prior Labs address different layers of the same problem. Reltio strengthens master-data governance and semantic data models, while Prior Labs adds tabular AI capabilities for structured business data. Together, these assets help SAP ground AI agents in cleaner, more connected enterprise data.
SAP ERP Tools Could Lower Migration Friction
ERP migration remains one of the biggest barriers to cloud adoption. SAP says its AI-powered ERP migration toolchain is helping customers accelerate deployments, shorten time to value and reduce migration costs by up to 30%.
The company also plans to introduce three additional ERP migration assistants with 10 underlying agents later this quarter. If these tools work as intended, they could make RISE with SAP and GROW with SAP easier to adopt for customers moving legacy workloads into the cloud.
SAP Trends Carry Margin and Macro Risks
AI scale is not free. SAP has to keep investing in product development, acquisitions and platform capacity while competing with large providers such as Oracle Corporation ORCL, whose Fusion Cloud Applications also embed AI agents across enterprise workflows.
Near-term dilution is another concern. SAP lowered its 2026 non-IFRS operating profit outlook to €11.8-€12.2 billion, reflecting more than €100 million of expected impact from Dremio and Prior Labs. Operating expenses for 2027 are projected to rise at 80-90% of revenue growth.
Enterprise AI adoption also carries timing risk. Long sales cycles, complex license transactions, cybersecurity exposure, geopolitical tension and customer budget shifts could weigh on demand. Salesforce, Inc. CRM, through Agentforce, adds another major competitive reference point in enterprise agentic software.

SAP’s agentic AI and cloud ERP strategy gives it a credible path to broader enterprise automation, but the stock’s near-term setup is less supportive. Product momentum must still translate into firmer earnings revisions and better market timing.

How SAP Is Riding the Enterprise Shift Toward Agentic AI & Cloud ERP

Oracle shares have been more than cut in half in less than a year on fears over its huge capex spending.
Investors worry that the company's spending on AI infrastructure isn't guaranteed to pay off soon enough.
The AI industry's future is compelling, even if investors are questioning its initial practicality and marketability.
It's been a tough past few months for Oracle (NYSE: ORCL) shareholders. Very tough. This tech stock is now down 63% from September's peak and deep into new 52-week low territory.
There's no uncertainty as to why, either. Oracle is spending a fortune on artificial intelligence infrastructure, with no guarantee that those investments will pay off in the near or distant future. The company has also laid off roughly 21,000 workers -- about 13% of its workforce -- over the course of the past year. It's not exactly a sign of confidence in its future.

The sellers, however, have arguably overshot their target.
The analyst community thinks so anyway. The vast majority of this crowd still rates ORCL stock as a strong buy, with a consensus price target of $250.87, which is more than twice this ticker's current price. These analysts are likely optimistic that, even if Oracle is uncomfortably dependent on its $300 billion business relationship with unprofitable OpenAI, the artificial intelligence business it needs will materialize soon enough, one way or another.
In this vein, a Precedence Research outlook suggests the global AI infrastructure market is poised to grow at an average annualized rate of nearly 22% through 2035. That's more than enough opportunity for Oracle, which is still expected to report revenue growth of nearly 33% this fiscal year, before accelerating its top-line growth to 46% next year.
This doesn't guarantee ORCL has already hit bottom, and even if it has, there's no assurance any recovery effort will be quick, effective, or consistent. That's just the nature of bargain-hunting high-growth stocks. They aren't entirely predictable.
The risk is typically worth the volatility and potential reward, and in this instance, it's not as if Oracle is an all-or-nothing longshot. The artificial intelligence business is real and here to stay, and this company is positioned to win a significant share of it. The stock's recent weakness is more about the market's mood and perception of AI's early costs, but moods can and do shift fairly quickly.

Oracle Stock Just Hit a 52-Week Low. Is It Time to Give Up, or a Long-Term Buying Opportunity?

Stock indexes settled mixed on Monday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average posting a 1-week high and the Nasdaq 100 falling to a 2.5-month low. The weakness in chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks on Monday weighed on the Nasdaq 100 and limited gains in the broader market. Investors rotated out of semiconductor and AI-infrastructure stocks on Monday and into beaten-down sectors, such as software.

Stocks initially jumped on Monday after the US and Iran held off on attacks for a third straight day, easing geopolitical risks, pushing crude oil prices sharply lower, and helping lift global stock and bond markets. On Sunday, Mike Waltz, US ambassador to the United Nations, said the US is giving diplomacy “some space.” The plunge in crude oil prices on Monday knocked the 10-year T-note yield down -4 bp to 4.64%.
Monday’s US economic news showed strength in the economy and is supportive of stocks after US Jun capital goods new orders nondefense ex-aircraft, a proxy for capital spending, rose +0.9% m/m, stronger than expectations of +0.7% m/m.
Sep WTI crude oil prices (CLU26) plunged by more than -7% on Monday as tensions eased in the Middle East after the US held off against further airstrikes on Iran for a third straight day and Iran signaled it was refraining from any retaliation as it held negotiations with Oman over the Strait of Hormuz.
However, tensions remain high in the Middle East as the US maintains its blockade of Iranian oil shipments in the Persian Gulf and President Trump raised the possibility of intensified action against Iran. Also, Houthi militants in Yemen claimed to have struck facilities linked to Saudi Aramco in the Red Sea port towns of Jizan and Yanbu on Saturday. Yanbu, the western end of the East-West pipeline, has become Saudi’s key crude export outlet since the Strait of Hormuz has effectively been shut off by the war. Jizan is home to a refinery and export terminal along the Red Sea.
The outlook for strong Q2 earnings, which continue this week, is a bullish factor for stocks. The markets are waiting for results from a raft of megacap technology companies this week, including Amazon.com, Meta Platforms, and Microsoft. Forecasts compiled by Bloomberg Intelligence suggest Q2 earnings may increase by +23%, close to Q1’s blowout earnings of +30%, which was more than double the +12% analysts had expected. AI spending is expected to account for most of earnings, with AI infrastructure stocks set to contribute nearly 60% of the S&P 500's earnings-per-share growth in Q2. So far, earnings results have been positive, with 86% of the 135 S&P 500 companies that have reported Q2 earnings beating estimates, according to Bloomberg data.
The markets are discounting a 38% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on Tue/Wed.
Overseas stock markets settled higher on Monday. The Euro Stoxx 50 climbed to a 2.5-week high and closed up +0.02%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +1.15% on Friday. Japan's Nikkei-225 Stock Average closed up +0.50%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU6) on Monday closed up +8 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield fell -3.6 bp to 4.641%. T-notes moved higher amid Monday’s -7% plunge in crude oil prices, which eased inflation expectations. The 10-year breakeven inflation rate fell to a 1-month low of 2.201% on Monday. Weak demand for the Treasury’s $70 billion auction of 5-year T-notes limited gains in T-notes as the auction had a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.28, below the 10-auction average of 2.35 and the lowest in 3.75 years.
European government bond yields moved lower on Monday. The 10-year German bund yield fell -3.9 bp to 3.133%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell -3.5 bp to 4.997%.
The German Jul IFO business confidence index rose +0.9 to a 5-month high of 86.6, stronger than expectations of 86.0.
ECB Governing Council member Peter Kazimir said "he remains of the view that the ECB will have to raise interest rates at least one more time" to ensure that inflation risks don't spin out of control.
The markets are discounting an 88% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on September 10.
US Stock Movers
Chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks retreated on Monday, weighing on the broader market. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) fell to a 1-week low and closed down more than -2%. Sandisk (SNDK) closed down more than -12% to lead losers in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100, and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and ASML Holding NV (ASML) closed down more than -5%. Also, Western Digital (WDC), Lam Research (LRCX), and Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX) closed down more than -4%, and Micron Technology (MU), Applied Materials (AMAT), and KLA Corp (KLAC) closed down more than -3%. In addition, Marvell Technology (MRVL) closed down more than -2%.
Energy producers and service providers moved lower on Monday amid the -7% decline in crude oil prices. Devon Energy (DVN), Diamondback Energy (FANG), and Occidental Petroleum (OXY) closed down more than -4%, and APA Corp (APA), ConocoPhillips (COP), and Haliburton (HAL) closed down more than -3%. Also, Chevron (CVX) closed down more than -2%, and ExxonMobil Holdings (XOM) and SLB Ltd (SLB) closed down more than -1%.
Software stocks rallied on Monday, a supportive factor for the overall market. Atlassian (TEAM) closed up more than +10%, and Workday (WDAY) closed up more than +9% to lead gainers in the S&P 500. Also, Thomson Reuters (TRI) closed up more than +8%, and Autodesk (ADSK) and Palantir Technologies (PLTR) closed up more than +7%. In addition, ServiceNow (NOW) closed up more than +6%, and Salesforce (CRM) closed up more than +6% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials. Finally, Adobe (ADBE) closed up more than +5%, Oracle (ORCL) closed up more than +4%, Intuit (INTU) and Datadog (DDOG) closed up by more than +2%, and Microsoft (MSFT) closed up by more than +1%.
Airline stocks and cruise line operators moved higher on Monday after crude oil prices plunged more than -7%. American Airlines Group (AAL), Carnival (CCL), Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH), and Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCL) closed up more than +3%, and Alaska Air Group (ALK) closed up more than +2%. Also, United Airlines Holdings (UAL) and Delta Air Lines (DAL) closed up more than +1%, and Southwest Airlines (LUV) closed up +0.67%.
CH Robinson Worldwide (CHRW) closed down more than -6%, adding to last Friday’s -9% plunge, to lead trucking and freight companies lower after a Dallas jury awarded $604 million in compensatory damages against the company and two other defendants for a verdict related to a trucking accident. Also, FedEx Freight Holding Company (FDXF) and Marten Transport (MRTN) closed down more than -4%, and Arcbest (ARCB) closed down more than -3%. In addition, Old Dominion Freight Line (ODFL), Knight-Swift Transportation (KNX), JB Hunt Transport (JBHT), and XPO Inc (XPO) closed down more than -2%.
MapLight Therapeutics (MPLT) closed down more than -71% after posting results from a mid-stage trial of its experimental therapy to treat schizophrenia, which Stifel said did not meet the “upside case” scenario.
Nvidia (NVDA) closed down more than -4% to lead losers in the Dow Jones Industrials after announcing it had made a “substantial” investment in AI startup Safe Superintelligence.
Forte Biosciences (FBRX) closed up more than +39% after Argenx SE agreed to buy the company for about $2.2 billion, or $77 a share.
D-Wave Quantum (QBTS) closed up more than +20% after Benchmark Company LLC reinstated coverage on the stock with a recommendation of buy and a price target of $30.
IonQ (IONQ) closed up more than +9% after Benchmark Company LLC reinstated coverage on the stock with a recommendation of buy and a price target of $60.
Baker Hughes (BKR) closed up more than +6% after reporting Q2 revenue of $6.74 billion, better than the consensus of $6.51 billion.
Rocket Lab Corp. (RKLB) closed up more than +4% after KGI Securities upgraded the stock to outperform from neutral with a price target of $107.
