A high current ratio does not always suggest that the company is in good financial shape. It may also indicate that the firm failed to utilize its assets significantly. Hence, a range of 1-3 is considered ideal.
Quick Ratio: Unlike the current ratio, the quick ratio — the “acid-test ratio” or “quick assets ratio” — indicates a company’s ability to pay short-term obligations. It considers inventory, excluding current assets, relative to current liabilities. A quick ratio of more than 1 is desirable, like the current ratio.
Cash Ratio: This is the most conservative ratio among the three, considering cash and cash equivalents and invested funds relative to current liabilities. It measures a company’s ability to meet existing debt obligations using the most liquid assets. Though a cash ratio of more than 1 may suggest sound financials, a higher number may indicate inefficiency in cash utilization.
A ratio greater than 1 is always desirable, but may not always represent a company’s financial condition.

The New York Times Company is a diversified media company comprising newspapers, Internet businesses and other investments. It is capitalizing on its multi-platform strategy to drive digital growth, broaden audience engagement and diversify revenue streams. Expansion into lifestyle categories such as Cooking, Games and Sports, supported by bundled subscription offerings, is deepening customer relationships and boosting retention.
NYT recently reported second-quarter 2025 results. The company's adjusted earnings per share were 58 cents, which surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 50 cents and increased from the year-ago adjusted earnings of 45 cents. Total revenues of $685.9 million came ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $669 million and increased 9.7% year over year.
NYT added approximately 230,000 net digital-only subscribers in the quarter under review compared with the end of the preceding quarter, propelled by multiple products across its portfolio. NYT’s digital-only average revenue per user (ARPU) increased to an impressive $9.64 in the second quarter from $9.34 in the year-ago period. This rise in ARPU can be attributed to subscribers transitioning from promotional pricing to higher rate plans and price hikes for certain tenured subscribers.
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for NYT’s 2025 bottom line is pinned at $2.28 per share, unchanged in the past seven days. The company has a Growth Score of B and a trailing four-quarter earnings surprise of 12.1%, on average.
Dillard's is a large departmental store chain featuring fashion apparel and home furnishings. As of Aug 14, 2025, DDS operated 272 Dillard’s stores, including 28 clearance stores, across 30 states.
DDS recently reported second-quarter 2025 results wherein net sales came in at $1.5 billion, up 1.6% year over year. Both total retail sales (which excludes CDI) and comparable store sales inched up 1%. The strong performing categories were juniors’ and children’s apparel and ladies’ accessories and lingerie while home and furniture was the weakest performing category.
Dillard’s reported adjusted earnings per share of $4.66, which topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 23% and grew 1.5% year over year.
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for DDS’ 2025 earnings is pegged at $30.47 per share, unchanged in the past seven days. The company has a Growth Score of A and a trailing four-quarter earnings surprise of 24.04%, on average.
Newmont Corporation is one of the world's largest producers of gold with several active mines in Nevada, Peru, Australia and Ghana. The company is the only gold producer listed on the S&P 500 Index. It also produces copper, silver, zinc and lead.
Newmont continues to invest in growth projects and remains focused on driving shareholder value. The company is pursuing several projects, including Tanami Expansion 2 in Australia, the Ahafo North expansion in Ghana and Cadia Panel Caves in Australia. Newmont also remains committed to divestingnon-core businesses as it shifts its strategic focus to Tier 1 assets. In April 2025, Newmont completed the sale of its Akyem operation in Ghana and its Porcupine operation in Canada, successfully executing its divestiture program announced in February 2024. The acquisition of Newcrest is expected to generate significant synergies.
Newmont's revenues for the second quarter were roughly $5.32 billion, up 20.8% from the prior-year quarter. The figure topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $4.58 billion. The increase in the top line was primarily due to higher year-over-year realized gold prices. Barring one-time items, adjusted earnings were $1.43 per share, up from 72 cents reported in the prior-year quarter. It topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.04 per share.
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2025 earnings is pegged at $5.27 per share, unchanged in the past seven days. NEM has a Growth Score of B and a trailing four-quarter earnings surprise of 32.82%, on average.
Frontdoor is the parent company of home service plan brands like American Home Shield, HSA, Landmark and OneGuard. Based in Memphis, TN, this company provides home warranties in the United States.
FTDR is gaining from its focus on new and innovative ways to boost demand for services, and the relaunch of the American Home Shield brand is a significant component of this strategy. The company’s continued emphasis on growing its member base, particularly in the DTC channel, has been driving growth.
In the last reported quarter, revenues came in at $617 million, up 14% year over year. The uptick was driven by a 2% increase in price and 12% higher volume. The higher volume was driven by the 2-10 acquisition. Real estate revenues increased 21%. Further, the number of first-year Direct-to-Consumer home warranties was 2.09 million, up 7% year over year. Gross margin expanded 130 basis points to 58%.

Relative Strength Alert For New York Times

Investors in New York Times Co. (Symbol: NYT) saw new options become available today, for the December 19th expiration. One of the key data points that goes into the price an option buyer is willing to pay, is the time value, so with 205 days until expiration the newly available contracts represent a possible opportunity for sellers of puts or calls to achieve a higher premium than would be available for the contracts with a closer expiration. At Stock Options Channel, our YieldBoost formula has looked up and down the NYT options chain for the new December 19th contracts and identified one put and one call contract of particular interest.
The put contract at the $50.00 strike price has a current bid of 60 cents. If an investor was to sell-to-open that put contract, they are committing to purchase the stock at $50.00, but will also collect the premium, putting the cost basis of the shares at $49.40 (before broker commissions). To an investor already interested in purchasing shares of NYT, that could represent an attractive alternative to paying $55.27/share today.

The New York Times Company Leverages Digital Subscriptions for Growth

Newsmax (NYSE: NMAX) plunged over 11% on Tuesday and is now down nearly 70% from its IPO closing price on March 31. This sharp decline comes despite the conservative media company’s rapid expansion across cable, digital, and print platforms. Although Newsmax has seen a surge in viewership, ranking as the fifth most-watched cable channel and fourth among cable news networks, investors are increasingly alarmed by the company’s weak financials, elevated legal risks, and sky-high valuation.

Weak Financials, Lofty Valuation
Newsmax’s first earnings report as a public company paints a mixed picture. In Q1 2025 (ending March), the company reported $45.3 million in revenue, a 12% increase year-over-year (y-o-y) driven by growth across its core segments: advertising, affiliate fees, and subscription. The network also saw a notable 50% increase in viewership, reaching 33.6 million for the quarter. However, these audience gains have yet to translate into profitability. Newsmax posted a net loss of $17.2 million, or $0.49 per share, alongside an adjusted EBITDA loss of $1.2 million. This continues a broader pattern of financial underperformance, where full-year 2024 net losses deepened to $72.2 million from $41.8 million in 2023. With a current market capitalization of $2.8 billion, Newsmax trades at a steep price-to-sales ratio of 16.3, far above the broadcasting industry average of just 0.48. This stark valuation gap has fueled investor skepticism.
Legal Risks Loom
One of the most significant threats facing Newsmax is legal. The company is being sued by Dominion Voting Systems, which alleges Newsmax made defamatory claims about vote rigging during the 2020 U.S. election. A Delaware Superior Court recently ruled that there is “clear and convincing evidence” that Newsmax broadcast false claims. The case now heads to a jury trial, with Dominion seeking $1.6 billion in damages, an existential threat to a company whose total revenue in 2024 was just $171 million. While there’s no guarantee such damages will be awarded, the looming uncertainty poses a major overhang for investors.
Can Growth Justify the Price?
Newsmax has strong gross margins near 50%, but its current growth doesn’t support its valuation. With widening losses, legal risks, and limited financial flexibility, the stock faces significant downside unless the company can scale profitably and resolve litigation.

The New York Times Q1 25 Earnings Conference Call At 8:00 AM ET

The New York Times’ stock (NYSE: NYT) is scheduled to release its fiscal first-quarter earnings on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, with analysts projecting earnings of 34 cents per share on $635 million in revenue. There are 20 earnings data points recorded over the last five years, with 12 positive and 8 negative one-day (1D) returns observed. In summary, positive 1D returns were seen about 60% of the time.
However, this percentage decreases to 58% if we consider data for the last 3 years instead of 5.
Median of the 12 positive returns = 3.9%, and median of the 8 negative returns = -7.5%

Correlation Between 1D, 5D, and 21D Historical Returns
A relatively less risky strategy (though not useful if the correlation is low) is to understand the correlation between short-term and medium-term returns post earnings, find a pair that has the highest correlation, and execute the appropriate trade. For example, if 1D and 5D show the highest correlation, a trader can position themselves “long” for the next 5 days if 1D post-earnings return is positive. In the latest quarter ending Dec. 31, 2024, The New York Times added 350,000 net digital-only subscribers, pushing its membership base past 11.4 million. The average revenue per user (ARPU) also rose 4.4% year over year to $9.65 as the company implemented higher prices for both its traditional subscribers and "bundled" subscribers, which get access to the company's digital properties such as Wirecutter, content on the New York Times website, mobile applications, and other products. The board also approved a $350 million share repurchase plan and announced a 5% year-over-year increase in its quarterly dividend per share to $0.18.
The New York Times expects this positive momentum to continue in the first quarter of 2025. It expects its digital-only subscription revenue to post a year-over-year increase of between 14% and 17%. Total subscription revenue is projected to rise by 7% to 10% year over year.
Last year saw The New York Times ranked at the top of news channels once again in time spent per visitor. Every product within the company's portfolio has evolved, along with a new Games app and expanded sports coverage.
Management has ambitious plans to deliver more value to readers and continue to grow its digital subscriber base. The company also lined up a slate of new content, shows, features, and games that will be released this year. This, along with plans to beef up its multimedia offerings and package with its award-winning news content, should result in healthy subscriber additions and also higher ARPU, with The New York Times continuing to grow its net income and dividends for the foreseeable future.

Roper Technologies (NASDAQ: ROP) designs and develops software and engineered solutions for diverse industries such as healthcare, food, water, and construction. The company demonstrated consistent revenue, net income, and free-cash-flow growth over the years.

This steadily rising free cash flow enabled Roper Technologies to once again raise its dividend, making it an impressive 32 consecutive years of dividend increases. The latest quarterly dividend of $0.825 represents a 10% year-over-year increase.
For 2025, the company expects to grow revenue by 10% year over year, of which 6% to 7% will represent organic growth. Management sees higher demand for mission-critical solutions and is confident it can expand its recurring revenue base. This year should also see meaningful contributions from the acquisitions that Roper Technologies conducted in 2024. Looking ahead, the company has $5 billion on standby for acquisitions and has identified a large pipeline of attractive acquisition targets.
In March, Roper Technologies acquired CentralReach, a provider of cloud-native software that enables the administration of applied behavior analysis therapy, for around $1.65 billion. Management expects this acquisition to deliver 20%-plus organic revenue and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) growth.
Management has outlined long-term goals that include generating double-digit revenue growth through disciplined capital deployment, and compound its free cash flow by a mid-teens percentage. With the business delivering on these objectives, investors can be confident that it will continue to do well.

Should You Buy The New York Times Stock at Its Discounted Price?

It was always something of a mystery what was being liberated on President Donald Trump's "Liberation Day," but one thing is now clear: Billions of dollars in brokerage accounts across the country have been set free. The president's announcement of a blanket 10% tariff on all imports and higher taxes on most major trading partners clobbered investors.
After stocks edged up in regular trading Wednesday, the announcement set off a shock after hours. As of 7:15 p.m. ET, futures had not yet started trading, but some major names were down sharply. Shopify, the e-commerce software leader, had lost 9%. Tesla and Apple had each fallen 7%. Nvidia had slipped 5%. The rest of the "Magnificent Seven" stocks that had led the bull market of 2023 and 2024 had gotten hit hard as well, and the wipeout may be unprecedented in modern market history, at least for after-hours trading.

Much of this sell-off seems to be a visceral reaction to the news, and to the economic experiment driving it: The Trump administration has asked Americans to endure some economic pain in order to (according to its reasoning) strengthen the U.S. economy over the long term. It says tariffs will reshore businesses, reduce the trade deficit and dependence on foreign imports, and rebuild the country's manufacturing base.
Given the sea of red after hours on Wednesday, it's not surprising that investors would be panicking, especially since stocks were at all-time highs just weeks ago.
At times like these, it's worth remembering the sage advice of Warren Buffett, the Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK.A) (NYSE: BRK.B) CEO and 94-year-old generally regarded as the greatest investor of all time. Two aphorisms in particular stand out at the moment.
Buffett on falling stock prices
There's no shortage of Buffett wisdom on value investing, but one quote sticks out right now. Discussing his contrarian approach to investing, Buffett once said, "If they buy a stock and they think if it goes up it's wonderful, and if it goes down it's bad -- we think just the opposite. When it goes down we love it, because we'll buy more."
What Buffett is saying might seem counterintuitive, but it makes sense. For net buyers of stocks, it's good for stock prices to go down, because it allows them to buy more shares for the same amount of money.
Ultimately, you are investing in a company. And if the long-term prospects and health of that business hasn't been damaged by the sell-off in question, then you're getting a better deal buying shares at a lower price.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk echoed this sentiment a few weeks ago when he implored Tesla employees not to sell their stock: "So, Tesla stock goes up, and it goes down. But, actually, it's still the same company." He said "It's just people's perception of the future" that changes.
In the case of tariffs, they're likely to have a near-term impact on many top stocks and on much of the American economy. But no one really knows the impact five years from now, and certainly not 10 years from now. We don't even know if the tariffs are here to stay.
If you're a long-term investor, stay focused on your time horizon. (You're not a day trader looking to make a quick buck.)
Buffett on buying American
Buffett has long been an advocate not just for capitalism and investing, but specifically for buying American stocks. In 2008, shortly after Lehman Brothers failed, he urged fellow investors in a New York Times op-ed to "Buy American. I am."
More recently, he told investors in his annual shareholder letter that "I have depended on the success of American businesses and I will continue to do so," and he added that Berkshire would always be invested in "mostly American equities."
While diversifying into international stocks isn't a bad idea at the moment, U.S. stocks have outperformed their global peers over time, and the U.S. has long been a dynamo of growth and innovation. Buffett has long insisted on betting on America, and he's unlikely to change his tune.
Enduring drawdowns and even crashes might be emotionally painful, but they do present opportunities to scoop up quality stocks on the cheap, and it's wise to take advantage of them. U.S. stocks have rebounded from much greater crises and gone on to set all-time highs.
Don't take it from me. Take it from Buffett, who has been invested through crises including the oil embargo, stagflation, Black Monday, the dot-com bust, 9/11, the great financial crisis, and the COVID-19 pandemic -- and is still winning with the same simple strategy.
