New York Times (NYT) Shares Cross Below 200 DMA

Hostilities have resumed in the Middle East, with the United States carrying out its 10th consecutive night of strikes on Iran. Oil prices have again been surging, and consumers fear that inflation, which somewhat eased in June, might increase again.
Markets have remained volatile for most of June and July, triggered by concerns over the sustainability of tech stocks. Renewed fears of a slowing economy could further derail stocks. Given this scenario, we recommend buying three defensive stocks from the consumer staples sector, namely, The New York Times Company NYT, The Vita Coco Company, Inc. COCO and Hormel Foods Corporation HRL.
Volatility Grips Wall Street
Oil prices have surged more than 5% since the United States resumed its attack on Iran earlier this month after President Donald Trump declared that the ceasefire is “over.” On Tuesday, energy prices moved up and down as investors closely watched a fresh diplomatic push toward ending the ongoing hostilities.
West Texas Intermediate crude futures rose 2% to settle at $84.91 a barrel, while international benchmark Brent was up 2% to end at $91.01 per barrel.
Inflation eased substantially in June after a temporary memorandum of understanding was reached by the United States and Iran to end hostilities. The consumer price index (CPI) dipped 0.4% month over month in June, after increasing 0.5% in May. The monthly decline in CPI was the biggest since April 2020.
Year over year, CPI declined to 3.5% in June, more than the consensus estimate of a reading of 3.8%. The decline follows a reading of 4.2% in May.
However, concerns have been growing that inflation could spike again if oil prices continue to surge after renewed hostilities between the United States and Iran. Markets have already been volatile over the past month, triggered by a massive tech sell-off on growing worries over the sustainability of AI-related stocks.
Although inflation eased in June, it remains sharply higher than the Federal Reserve’s 2% target. High inflation has posed a major challenge for the Fed. The central bank has been contemplating an interest rate hike by the end of this year.
Markets are pricing in a 25-basis-point rate hike by the Fed sometime this year. Higher borrowing costs could further impact the spending power of consumers and the broader economy.

Buy 3 Defensive Stocks to Navigate the Ongoing Market Volatility

Geopolitical tensions escalated over the weekend, as the United States and Iran carried out missile strikes on each other. Within hours, energy prices surged as fears grew that the conflict could escalate further.
A surge in global oil prices after the initial U.S.-Iran conflict in late February pushed inflation higher, with the Federal Reserve contemplating a rate hike by the end of this year. The Wall Street rally has time and again been interrupted by volatility this year, as fears of a rate hike, triggered by high inflation, global tensions and the recent tech sell-off, have been denting investors’ confidence.

Geopolitical Tensions Escalate Again
The United States and Iran fired a barrage of missiles at each other in the Middle East as tensions escalated over the weekend. The renewed tensions come after President Donald Trump last week said that he is no longer interested in negotiations.
Oil prices jumped more than 3% over the weekend following the attacks, as fears grew that the Strait of Hormuz could again be blocked, which could disrupt oil supply from the Middle East.
Energy prices had eased substantially over the past month after the United States and Iran signed a temporary memorandum of understanding in mid-June. Oil prices had surged nearly 40% after the war began in late February.
The surge saw inflation jump unexpectedly since then. The Consumer Price Index, an important gauge for measuring the prices of goods and services across the economy, rose 0.5% month over month in May after jumping 0.6% in April, and 4.2% from the year-ago levels.
This has made the Federal Reserve’s job difficult. However, the central bank left interest rates unchanged in its last meeting in the current range of 3.5-3.75%. The minutes from the Federal Reserve’s latest FOMC meeting show that officials are still divided over an interest rate hike, as some believe that inflation could ease after the hostilities ended with the signing of the memorandum of understanding.
However, the Federal Reserve could once again contemplate a rate hike if inflation remains high following the renewed tensions in the Middle East.
Markets have already been volatile over the past month due to a massive tech sell-off, which is being triggered by concerns over the sustainability of AI-related stocks. This has been denting investors’ confidence and could keep markets volatile for a longer period.

Consumer Confidence Remains Low
The consumer confidence index rose to 91.2 in June from a downwardly revised reading of 90.6 in the prior month, the Conference Board reported earlier this week. A separate report showed that consumer sentiment improved in June but remained near historic lows.
The University of Michigan's Surveys of Consumers showed the consumer sentiment index rose to a final reading of 49.5 in June from 44.8 in the month earlier, May, after the preliminary reading showed 48.9.
The marginal improvement comes after the United States and Iran signed a temporary memorandum of understanding in mid-June to end hostilities in the Middle East. Oil prices fell sharply from record highs, boosting consumers’ confidence. However, hostilities have not ceased completely and have continued over the past weekend amid ongoing attempts at negotiations between the two warring nations.
A steep rise in oil prices in the initial months of the war saw inflation spike to a three-year high. Higher prices of goods have been weighing on the economy. The initial rise in oil prices is worrying consumers as they believe the impact is going to last long.
There are several other factors that have been denting consumers’ confidence. Households’ perception of the labor market situation has been deteriorating for several months now, with portions of the survey viewing jobs as difficult to get hitting a five and a half year high.
Latest data from ADP ADP shows that private sector payrolls increased 98,000 in June, down from an unrevised 122,000 job additions in May and lower than the consensus estimate of 110,000 jobs.
High inflation has made the Federal Reserve’s job more challenging, with markets now pricing in a 25-basis-point rate hike by the end of this year.

Inflation Continues to Rise
The personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index rose 4.1% year over year in May, its largest gain since April 2023, the Commerce Department reported on Thursday. This comes after PCE inflation jumped an unrevised 3.8% in April.
Month over month, the PCE index rose 0.4% in May, after climbing 0.7% in April. Oil and other energy prices rose 6.5%. Food prices increased 0.3%. Core PCE, which excludes volatile food and energy, rose 0.3% sequentially in May and 3.4% from the year-ago level. The annual reading for the core PCE was the highest level since October 2023.
Inflation eased last year but started surging from March, primarily due to higher energy costs that raised everything from transportation costs to commodity prices. Oil prices surged as much as 40% in March and April following the war in Iran.
Although oil prices have eased after the United States and Iran signed a preliminary peace deal, the crisis is far from over. The impact of the initial rise in oil prices is still pushing up the prices of commodities. Also, a surge in prices of semiconductors and other tech goods could likely push inflation up.
The Federal Reserve has been contemplating hiking rates as inflation remains far away from its 2% target. Markets have been pricing in a 25-basis-point rate hike by the end of this year. High borrowing costs could further weigh on the economy and keep markets volatile for a longer period.

QGRO, ANET, NYT, APP: Large Outflows Detected at ETF

The Federal Reserve decided to keep interest rates unchanged at its June policy meeting on Wednesday. While the move was widely expected, officials indicated the possibility of a rate cut later this year as they continue to struggle with rising inflation over the past three months.
High interest rates may continue to put pressure on economic growth and prolong market volatility.
Against this backdrop, investors may consider defensive stocks from the consumer staples sector, such as American States Water Company AWR, Consolidated Edison, Inc ED, The Coca-Cola Company KO and The New York Times Company NYT.

Fed Hints at Possible Policy Shift
The Federal Reserve kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged in the 3.5–3.75% range at the end of the Federal Open Market Committee meeting last week. The central bank’s decision was widely anticipated by markets as it continues to tame sky-high inflation. This meeting also marked Kevin Warsh’s first as Federal Reserve Chair.
The Fed’s communication saw a notable change, as officials removed earlier wording that had hinted at the likelihood of additional rate cuts. At the same time, policymakers suggested that future rate increases could still be on the table if needed.
So far this year, the central bank has kept rates steady after cutting them by 75 basis points at the end of 2025. Inflation remains a key concern. Although price growth eased significantly in 2025, the Iran conflict that began in late February pushed oil prices to record levels, contributing to renewed inflationary pressure.
The Consumer Price Index rose 0.5% in May, following a 0.6% increase in April. With the Fed’s 2% inflation target proving difficult to achieve, additional tightening could further strain consumers, many of whom are already reducing spending.
A rate hike at the end of the year hints at additional pressure on consumers and the various sectors, as it could slow demand for both goods and services.
