The stock is Apple. As of 2024's end, Berkshire Hathaway owned about 300 million shares of Apple, which was worth about $75 billion and represented about 2% of Apple's value. A year later, after selling shares in three of the next four quarters, Berkshire owned about 228 million shares worth about $62 billion.
It can seem like a really big deal that so many Apple shares were sold, but note that Berkshire still owns roughly 228 million shares. Also, consider that at the end of 2024, Apple shares made up a whopping 28% of the Berkshire portfolio. That's a lot of eggs in one basket! Mere portfolio rebalancing can be the explanation for all the sales. (More recently, Apple shares made up 22% of Berkshire's portfolio.)
So what did Buffett buy? Before stepping down, he opened a position in The New York Times and added to some holdings, such as Chevron and Chubb, while shrinking Berkshire's positions in stocks such as Bank of America.
You might be more interested in what has happened in 2026, though. Abel has overseen big investments in Google parent Alphabet and recently made his first big acquisition, of homebuilder Taylor Morrison.
Abel has also been spending millions buying back some Berkshire stock. You, too, might want to consider buying some Berkshire Hathaway stock, as it's a diversified conglomeration of solid businesses, built to last. Its energy division, previously run by Abel, may be particularly promising, in part because of data centers requiring lots of power.

Concerns about rising inflation due to the ongoing Iran war that has seen an astounding surge in global oil prices are hurting consumer confidence, which dipped further in May. Consumers are worried about the current labor market and are unclear about the economy’s health, which has turned them pessimistic.
Also, several Federal Reserve policymakers feel the need for a rate cut if inflation continues to remain elevated. We, thus, recommend buying four defensive stocks from the utilities and consumer staples sector, namely, Atmos Energy Corporation ATO, CMS Energy Corporation CMS, The New York Times Company NYT and Tyson Foods TSN.

Consumer Confidence Dips
The Conference Board on Tuesday reported that consumer confidence declined to 93.1 in May from an upwardly revised 93.8 in the prior month. Last month’s upward revision came as consumers grew slightly optimistic after a ceasefire announcement by President Donald Trump raised hopes of an end to the Iran war.
However, talks have fallen apart since then, and there are no clear signs of the war ending soon. Gasoline prices have surged nearly 40% since the beginning of the war with Iran and have played a major role in pushing inflation.
The consumer price index (CPI) increased 0.6% in April from the previous month after climbing 0.9% in March, according to data released earlier by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Compared with a year earlier, CPI advanced 3.8% in April, marking its highest level since May 2023.
Core CPI, which excludes the more volatile food and energy categories, rose 0.4% month over month and was up 2.8% from the same period last year.
The consumer price report comes days after the University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment survey, which showed a sharp decline. The Consumer Sentiment index dropped to 44.8 in May, the lowest level since the survey started in 1952.
Consumers have been cutting down on spending to accommodate their daily needs. The Federal Reserve left interest rates unchanged in its current range of 3.5-3.75%. Market participants believe that the central bank will hold rates unchanged till 2027.
However, the minutes of the Fed’s latest FOMC meeting show that several policymakers believe that the central bank should go for a rate hike if inflation continues to remain above 2%.
4 Defensive Stocks With Upside
Atmos Energy Corporation
Atmos Energy Corporation, along with its subsidiaries, is engaged in the regulated natural gas distribution and storage business. ATO serves nearly 3.3 million customers in more than 1,400 communities across eight states from the Blue Ridge Mountains in the East to the Rocky Mountains in the West. Atmos Energy operates more than 73,000 miles of transmission and distribution lines, as well as 5,700 miles of interstate pipelines.
Atmos Energy has an expected earnings growth rate of 12.3% for the current year. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for current-year earnings has improved 2.2% over the last 90 days. ATO has a beta of 0.65 and a current dividend yield of 2.25%.
Consolidated Edison
Consolidated Edison, Inc. is a diversified utility holding company with subsidiaries engaged in both regulated and unregulated businesses. ED’s regulated businesses operate through its subsidiaries — Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Orange and Rockland Utilities, Con Edison Clean Energy Businesses, Inc. and Con Edison Transmission, Inc.

Rate Hike Likely
The minutes of the Federal Reserve’s latest meeting show that most officials believe that a rate hike would be necessary if the Iran war continues to push up inflation. The Federal Reserve left interest rates unchanged in its current range of 3.5-3.75%.
However, the meeting received four “no” votes for the first time since 1992, indicating that there is a major conflict about the Federal Reserve’s future monetary policy path.
Inflation eased substantially last year and was on track to reach the Federal Reserve’s 2% target. However, the Iran war, which began at the end of February, has resulted in a surge in global oil prices. Energy costs have jumped nearly 40% since the beginning of the war, which has continued to aggravate inflation.
Consumer price index (CPI) rose 0.6% sequentially in April after jumping 0.9% in March, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported earlier. Year over year, CPI rose 3.8% in April, the highest since May 2023. Core CPI, which strips out the volatile food and energy costs, gained 0.4% sequentially in April and 2.8% from the year-ago levels.
Right now, it remains unclear when the Iran war will end. Inflation is well above the Fed’s 2% target, and Fed officials believe a rate cut would be appropriate if it stays above the mark for a longer period.

Fed Mulling Rate Hike to Control Inflation: 3 Safe-Haven Stocks to Buy

Berkshire's new CEO dumped a lot of stocks while adding positions in Delta and Macy's.
CEO Greg Abel's biggest move, though, was significantly increasing Berkshire's stake in Alphabet.
The quarterly filing of Berkshire Hathaway's (NYSE: BRKA) (NYSE: BRKB) Form 13F, revealing what moves the conglomerate made within its stock portfolio, is always a highly anticipated event for investors. Former CEO Warren Buffett is a legendary investor, so people no doubt wanted to see what moves Greg Abel made in his first quarter as chief executive.
If I were an owner of Berkshire stock, though, I would be highly disappointed with Abel's actions. First, it appears Abel just dumped all of former Berkshire fund manager Todd Combs' picks, including some highly attractive businesses like Amazon, Visa, and Mastercard. Combs was one of two portfolio managers, along with Ted Weschler, that Buffett had hired to work with him, and he later took on the additional role of CEO of GEICO, one of Berkshire's most important insurance subsidiaries. After getting passed over to head Berkshire, he left in early December to lead JPMorgan Chase's $10 billion Strategic Investment Group.

During the quarter, Berkshire fully exited 15 positions and almost all of its Constellation Brands stake. Along with newly added stocks, Berkshire went from owning 39 stocks at the end of last year to just 26 at the end of Q1.
Is Berkshire repeating past mistakes?
However, more concerning were the stocks Abel did add, as he bought shares in companies in two industries that Buffett has admitted were mistakes for him to get involved in.
Abel's largest new position was in Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL), where he took a $2.6 billion stake, purchasing over 6% of the airline's stock. Buffett is well-known for his dislike of airlines' economics -- he once called their need for capital a "bottomless pit" -- and his regret over past investments. In 1989, Berkshire invested in the preferred stock of US Airways, with Buffett later calling the investment an "unforced error." While he managed to squeeze out a small gain when he exited in 1998, he called it a "terrible mistake," while noting he was lucky to dodge the airline eventually going bankrupt. Buffett took a second dip into the airline sector in 2016, with a basket of investments in four airlines, this time taking a loss in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic severely reduced air travel.
The allure of airlines is generally straightforward. Investors typically see the industry gaining pricing power as capacity rationalizes. This could be from consolidation or bankruptcy, as in the case of Spirit Airlines. The airlines also have very attractive credit card businesses. However, this is still a very capital-intensive and economically sensitive industry, and things seem to go wrong if you hold these stocks long enough.
In addition to Delta, Abel also took a $55 million stake in department store operator Macy's (NYSE: M). Buffett has noted that retailing is a tough business with little moat, where management needs to stay smart. This is the first department store investment by Berkshire since 1966. However, based on comments to CNBC in March about a tiny purchase he liked, this seems like an investment Buffett could be behind, and he and Abel were likely lured in by the value of Macy's real estate portfolio, highlighted by its highly valuable New York City flagship store. That said, Macy's trading well below the value of its real estate portfolio has been an investment thesis for a very long time, and it hasn't exactly helped the stock over the past decade, when it has lost nearly 40% at recent prices.
Also of note, Abel did significantly add to Berkshire's Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL) (NASDAQ: GOOG) position, which I like, since in my view it is the best-positioned company with artificial intelligence (AI) over the long term, given that it is the only player with both its own world-class AI model and chips. However, he also tripled his stake in newspaper owner The New York Times (NYSE: NYT), after starting a position in Q4. The company has been doing well, but at a forward P/E of nearly 27 at recent prices, the valuation doesn't seem that attractive.
While Abel should be given some time to see how Berkshire's portfolio performs under his leadership, I personally am not a fan of most of his early moves, outside of Alphabet. The good news is that Alphabet was his largest move by far, with him buying about $10 billion more worth of shares than the Delta buy, which was his second-largest purchase.

Berkshire's lucky seven
Four of Berkshire Hathaway's six purchases in Q1 added shares to existing positions. The biggest of these was increasing the stake in Google parent Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL) (specifically, the Class A shares) by 204%.
Berkshire nearly tripled its position in The New York Times Company (NYSE: NYT). The conglomerate also added to its holdings of the Class A and Class B shares of homebuilder Lennar (NYSE: LEN) (NYSE: LENB).
Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) ranks as Berkshire's largest new holding. Abel authorized the purchase of 39.8 million shares of the airline stock, with the position valued at $2.6 billion at the end of Q1. Berkshire also bought 3 million shares of Macy's (NYSE: M).
In what was perhaps a twist, Berkshire Hathaway initiated a new position in Alphabet's Class C shares in addition to scooping up more Class A shares. After Alphabet's recent gains, the tech giant now ranks as Berkshire's fifth-largest holding.
Analyzing the picks
Importantly, Buffett is still actively involved with Berkshire's investing. He acknowledged in an interview with CNBC's Becky Quick earlier this year that he's still making investments, noting that he "won't make any that Greg thinks are wrong."
Buffett remains a value investor at heart. Unsurprisingly, some of the stocks Berkshire bought in Q1 traded at valuations many would view as attractive. Macy's is the best example, with the retail stock still trading at around nine times forward earnings. Berkshire also took advantage of an opportunity to scoop up shares of Delta Air Lines in Q1, almost certainly when the stock was beaten down over worries about rising fuel costs resulting from the Iran war.
Lennar is also relatively inexpensive, with a forward earnings multiple of 14.4 today. We don't know the exact timing of Berkshire's Q1 trades, but purchases later in the quarter seem likely after the stock sank because of weaker demand from U.S. homebuyers and rising input costs. Abel and Buffett, though, no doubt understand that Lennar's long-term prospects remain solid.
Buffett could have influenced Berkshire's buys of both classes of Alphabet's shares. He has long regretted not initiating a position in the stock years ago. Although the legendary investor might not view Alphabet's cloud business as in his wheelhouse, he recognizes a strong moat when he sees one.
What about the significant increase in Berkshire's stake in The New York Times Company? Perhaps the best explanation of this purchase is that the media company's digital initiatives continue to pay off. For example, The New York Times Company reported in February that its digital advertising revenue soared 24.9% year over year in the fourth quarter of 2025.
The best of the bunch
Berkshire Hathaway's stock buys in Q1 make sense. However, if I had to pick the best of the bunch, it would be Alphabet. You can flip a coin on whether the company's Class A or Class C shares get top billing.
Alphabet is well-positioned to profit from nearly every major technology trend shaping the future. It's a leader in artificial intelligence (AI). Google Cloud is the fastest-growing of the top three cloud service providers. Google Gemini is one of the most powerful AI models. The company's Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) are in such strong demand that Alphabet is now selling them to external customers.
Waymo is at the head of the pack in the autonomous ride-hailing market. Google Quantum AI is in the thick of the race to develop powerful quantum computers. Alphabet's Verily is using technology to improve healthcare. Its Calico unit is at the forefront of expanding human longevity.
To be sure, Alphabet isn't nearly as cheap as most of the other stocks Berkshire bought in Q1. But from a future-oriented standpoint, I think it's clearly the best of the bunch.

On Dec. 31, Warren Buffett retired as CEO of Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRKA)(NYSE: BRKB), handing the proverbial keys and control of the company's day-to-day operations and mammoth investment portfolio over to Greg Abel.
Following the closing bell on Friday, May 15, Wall Street and investors got their first look at what an Abel-led portfolio might entail -- and it involved a massive overhaul. Abel completely sold out of Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) and Domino's Pizza (NASDAQ: DPZ), the latter of which had been purchased for six consecutive quarters, while more than tripling Berkshire's stake in virtual monopoly Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL)(NASDAQ: GOOG).

There's no mistaking that this is Greg Abel's portfolio now
When the dust cleared on April 1, Form 13F filings show that Abel completely exited 16 positions (a third of Berkshire's portfolio, including its stakes in six Japanese stocks) during the first quarter.
The Amazon sale was, arguably, telegraphed following a 77% reduction in the December-ended quarter. Though Amazon possesses a sustainable moat and strong management team, something Abel and Berkshire's former boss often looked for in great investments, it isn't a screaming fundamental bargain, which is what Abel is seeking.
The sale of Domino's Pizza stock is a true shock after six consecutive quarters of purchases. However, the adverse effects of inflation on consumers in the food industry may be at play. While Domino's food speaks to value-conscious consumers, it nevertheless reported subpar same-store sales growth in the U.S. of 0.9% and an ultra-rare decline in international same-store sales (down 0.4%) in the first quarter.
In addition to Amazon and Domino's, longtime holdings Visa and Mastercard were shown the door, UnitedHealth Group was dumped, and Berkshire's stake in Chevron was cut by 35%.
Warren Buffett's successor piles into Google parent Alphabet
While there were a few notable new additions, including Delta Air Lines and department store retailer Macy's, and a near-tripling in The New York Times Co., it's Abel's hand over fist buying of Google parent Alphabet that really stands out.
Abel more than tripled Berkshire Hathaway's existing stake in the Class A shares (GOOGL) by purchasing 36,403,656 shares, and also added 3,585,215 Class C shares (GOOG). Collectively, Berkshire's stake in Alphabet is worth approximately $23 billion, as of May 15.
Most investors are familiar with Google, which holds a virtual monopoly on internet search traffic (roughly 90% of worldwide traffic). But Alphabet is much more than search. It's the parent of YouTube, the second-most-visited website behind Google, and is the brains behind the world's No. 3 cloud infrastructure service platform by total spend, Google Cloud.

Alphabet's incorporation of artificial intelligence solutions into Google Cloud has led to rapid acceleration in this segment's high-margin growth rate (63% in the first quarter compared with the previous year).

Warren Buffett's Successor, Greg Abel, Dumped Amazon and Domino's, and More Than Tripled Berkshire's Stake in a Virtual Monopoly in a Massive Portfolio Overhaul

The New York Times Company’s NYT first-quarter 2026 results surpassed expectations, driven by strong growth in digital subscriptions and a sharp increase in digital advertising revenues. Adjusted earnings were 61 cents per share, up 48.8% year over year and above the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 49 cents by 24.5%. Quarterly revenues rose 12% from the year-ago period to $712.2 million and topped the consensus mark of $694.5 million by about 2.6%.
The quarter reflected continued momentum in the company’s subscription-led strategy, improving monetization, strong advertiser demand and expanding engagement across its diversified digital ecosystem. NYT added approximately 310,000 net digital-only subscribers in the quarter compared with the end of the fourth quarter of 2025.
The New York Times Company’s digital-only average revenue per user (ARPU) increased 2.4% year over year to $9.77. The improvement was primarily driven by subscribers transitioning from promotional pricing to higher-priced plans and pricing increases on certain tenured subscribers.
NYT’s Subscription Revenues Continue to Climb
Total subscription revenues increased 11.3% year over year to $516.9 million in the quarter under review. Subscription revenues from digital-only products rose 16.1% to $389 million, benefiting from higher digital-only subscribers and improved ARPU. However, print subscription revenues declined 1.1% to $127.8 million due to softness in home-delivery and single-copy revenues.
The company ended the quarter with 13.08 million total subscribers across its print and digital products, including 12.52 million digital-only subscribers. Digital-only subscribers increased by approximately 1.46 million year over year.
Management remains optimistic about subscription growth trends. For the second quarter of 2026, NYT expects digital-only subscription revenues to increase 14-17%, while total subscription revenues are projected to rise 10-12%.
The New York Times Company Price, Consensus and EPS Surprise
Digital Advertising Strength Boosts NYT’s Top Line
Total advertising revenues rose 17.3% year over year to $126.8 million in the quarter. Digital advertising revenues surged 31.6% to $93.3 million, significantly exceeding management’s guidance range, fueled by strong marketer demand and growth in advertising supply. Print advertising revenues declined 9.8% to $33.6 million.
The New York Times Company highlighted continued strength in advertising categories tied to sports, games, shopping and lifestyle content. The company continues to incrementally expand advertising supply across its portfolio while maintaining a consumer-first experience.
For the second quarter, NYT expects digital advertising revenues to grow in the high-teens range, while total advertising revenues are projected to increase at a high-single-digit rate.
Other Key Highlights of NYT’s Results
Affiliate, licensing and other revenues increased 7.8% year over year to $68.5 million, mainly driven by stronger licensing revenues.
On the expense front, adjusted operating costs increased 9.4% year over year to $594.3 million, primarily due to higher compensation and benefits expenses related to journalism investments, video initiatives, marketing and product development.
Despite elevated investments, NYT delivered strong operating leverage. Adjusted operating profit increased 27.2% year over year to $117.9 million, while adjusted operating profit margin expanded 200 basis points to 16.6%.
NYT foresees affiliate, licensing and other revenues to rise at a low single-digit rate in the second quarter. Adjusted operating costs are expected to increase 8-9%, as the company continues investing in its journalism and digital product experiences while aiming to operate efficiently.
Sneak Peek Into NYT’s Financial Health
The New York Times Company ended the quarter with cash and marketable securities of $1.1 billion, a decline of $60.7 million from $1.2 billion as of Dec. 31, 2025. The company had no borrowings outstanding under its $400 million revolving credit facility and carried no other debt.
Net cash provided by operating activities was $92.2 million in the first quarter, and free cash flow was $81.5 million. Capital expenditures totaled about $11 million. NYT also repurchased 779,365 shares for $56.3 million during the quarter, with approximately $291.2 million remaining under its share repurchase authorization as of May 1, 2026. Management continues to expect capital expenditures between $35 million and $45 million for 2026.

The New York Times Company delivered another impressive quarter, outperforming expectations on both earnings and revenues while demonstrating the resilience of its subscription-first business model. Strong digital subscription growth, accelerating digital advertising revenues and expanding engagement across video and lifestyle products continue to strengthen the company’s long-term growth profile.
With disciplined cost management, healthy free cash flow generation and a debt-free balance sheet, NYT appears well-positioned to sustain growth momentum while investing strategically in journalism, product innovation and audience expansion.

Today, Buffett no longer holds the chief executive officer role at Berkshire Hathaway -- he turned that over to Greg Abel at the start of this year – but the investing giant remains chairman of the holding company and still is involved to some degree in the investing process. This past weekend, for the first time, Buffett didn't take a spot on the stage at the Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting -- but he did claim a seat in the front row of the directors' section.
And during this major event, the investing giant delivered a fresh warning to Wall Street. Let's consider what it means for you as an investor.
Buffett's recent moves
First, it's important to consider the investing backdrop today as well as Buffett's moves over the past several quarters. The S&P 500 pushed higher in the bull market over three years, delivering a 78% increase through the end of December. And the star of the show has been the artificial intelligence (AI) stock. Investors have poured into AI companies, with great optimism about the technology's potential to overhaul how many tasks are done.
AI has the power to help companies become more productive and innovative -- and this should boost the earnings performance of these users of AI. The developers and sellers of AI are already benefiting, bringing in billions of dollars in revenue and profit. This helped technology stocks to soar, driving this bull market.
Against this backdrop, Buffett hasn't been a major buyer of stocks -- in fact, he's been a net seller for more than a dozen quarters. And he's helped Berkshire Hathaway build up a record pile of cash. This might have been seen as a warning, suggesting that it may not be the best time to rush into stocks.
And what happened next? Earlier this year, headwinds emerged in the market -- from geopolitical and economic uncertainties to worries about the AI revenue opportunity -- and this weighed on many growth players and the major benchmarks in the first quarter. But the positive momentum returned in April. Investors regained optimism about the long-term picture amid the ceasefire in Iran and positive earnings reports from tech giants.
Buffett's latest warning
Now, as indexes resume this positive direction, let's return to Buffett and his latest comments on the investing environment. In an interview with CNBC at the Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting, he delivered a fresh warning:
"We've never had people in a more gambling mood than now," he said during the interview. "But that doesn't mean that investing is terrible. It does mean that prices for an awful lot of things will look very silly."
One powerful metric supports Buffett's comment, and that's the S&P 500 Shiller CAPE ratio, an inflation-adjusted look at stock price in relation to earnings per share. Earlier this year, it reached a level it's only reached once before in history -- during the dot-com bubble -- and it remains close to this record level today. This shows that stocks, overall, are historically expensive.
Here's what Buffett knows
So, does Buffett know something Wall Street doesn't? Well, while some individuals are focusing on short-term trading, Buffett recognizes that buying stocks at excessively high valuations generally isn't the best move for the long-term investor.
Considering this, should you really buy stocks now? And this brings us back to Buffett's actions in recent quarters. As mentioned, Berkshire Hathaway hasn't heavily invested in stocks -- but this doesn't mean it has stayed out of the market. Buffett and Abel, in any market environment, are still on the lookout for specific buying opportunities.
For example, in the fourth quarter of last year, Buffett opened a position in The New York Times and added to his position in Domino's Pizza.
So, yes, Buffett is delivering a fresh warning, and it's this: Don't rush into stocks at any price. It's important to be selective and pick up players trading at reasonable levels -- and in the current market, opportunities may not be around every corner. But as Buffett demonstrated through his recent purchases, investors might find entry points during any market environment. He even noted, as mentioned above, that investing today isn't exactly "terrible." And that's why, like Buffett, you can score a long-term win by investing wisely -- even during difficult markets.
