Shares of Figma (NYSE: FIG) fell 26.2% in September 2025, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence. That's the second double-digit price drop in two months, following Figma's initial public offering (IPO) on Aug. 1, 2025. On the upside, September's plunge was softer than August's 39% crash.
The company published its first quarterly report as a public company last month. The market reaction to that presentation accounted for most of August's investor pain.

Wall Street wanted more from Figma's debut report
Figma posted 41% year-over-year revenue growth in the second quarter of 2025, landing at $249.6 million. Adjusted net income rose 39% to $19.8 million, but both the new tally and the year-ago figure rounded off to breakeven earnings per share. The analyst consensus had called for earnings near $0.08 per share on sales in the neighborhood of $248.7 million. So that was a mixed bag with a mild revenue surprise and a more substantial bottom-line miss.
Looking ahead, Figma's management issued fairly bullish revenue guidance, with next-quarter and full-year targets just ahead of the Wall Street consensus.
Investors shrugged off the solid revenues to focus on Figma's earnings miss instead. The stock fell 19.9% the next day, followed by continued volatility for the rest of the month.
What goes up on IPO day often comes down quickly
The stock soared sky high on its IPO date. The stock was priced for sale at $33 per share but closed the first trading day at $65.57. Even now, after two months of steep price drops, Figma's stock trades well above the official IPO price at nearly $52 per share.
Getting in early on exciting IPOs can be a risky business. It's not a hard and fast rule but skyrocketing first-day prices are often followed by harsh price corrections right away. That's really what's going on here, as Figma investors adjust their expectations after August's soaring debut.
And there may be further price drops in the months ahead. The stock still looks incredibly expensive, trading at 277 times trailing earnings and 28.5 times sales.
Figma's technology is indeed exciting, using artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced collaboration tools to help teams of people create stunning web sites and mobile apps. The client list includes big names like Netflix, Duolingo, Zoom, and The New York Times -- all online veterans with the resources to choose any graphic design platform. And they all ended up using Figma.
But even when the sky is the limit, there's always a limit. Figma's stock probably shouldn't be worth $25.4 billion at this early stage, but that's the deal today. I don't mind watching this cooldown playing out from Wall Street's sidelines. The original IPO price of $33 per share looks like a more reasonable entry point. The stock is just too hot to handle so far.

Why Figma's Stock Lost 26% Last Month

Lennar, one of the nation's leading homebuilders, announced that its Board of Directors has declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.50 per share for both Class A and Class B common stock payable on October 27, 2025 to holders of record at the close of business on October 10, 2025.
Honeywell today announced that its Board of Directors has approved an increase in the company's regular annual cash dividend from $4.52 to $4.76 per share. The increase will be effective starting with the fourth-quarter dividend of $1.19 per share, which was declared today, and is payable on December 5, 2025, out of surplus to holders of record at the close of business on November 14, 2025. This marks the 16th time in 15 consecutive years that Honeywell has increased its annual dividend.
The New York Times' Board of Directors today declared a regular quarterly dividend of $.18 per share on the Company's Class A and Class B common stock. The dividend is payable on October 23, 2025, to shareholders of record as of the close of business on October 8, 2025.
Ingles Markets today announced that its Board of Directors has declared a cash dividend of $0.165 per share on all its Class A Common Stock and $0.15 per share on all its Class B Common Stock. This is an annual rate of $0.66 and $0.60 per share, respectively. Dividends on both the Class A and Class B Common Stock are payable October 16, 2025, to all shareholders of record on October 9, 2025.

The markets are expecting that the Fed will cut interest rates at Wednesday’s conclusion of the 2-day FOMC meeting. However, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 stocks fell from new record highs and turned lower after today’s stronger-than-expected US retail sales and manufacturing production reports were hawkish for Fed policy.

Signs that US consumer spending is holding up are a positive factor for the economy and equity markets after Aug retail sales rose more than expected. Also, strength in technology stocks is supportive of the broader market, led by a rally in semiconductor stocks.
US Aug retail sales rose +0.6% m/m, stronger than expectations of +0.2% m/m. Also, Aug retail sales ex-autos rose +0.7% m/m, stronger than expectations of +0.4% m/m.
The US Aug import price index ex-petroleum rose +0.2% m/m, slightly stronger than expectations of +0.1% m/m.
US Aug manufacturing production unexpectedly rose +0.2% m/m versus expectations for a -0.2% m/m decline.
The US Sep NAHB housing market index was unchanged at a 2.75-year low of 32, weaker than expectations of an increase to 33.
Most major US benchmark indexes, including the S&P 500, the Dow Jones Industrials, and the Nasdaq 100, continue to post record highs, driven by expectations of Fed interest rate cuts. Weak labormarket newsand relatively contained inflation reports bolstered expectations for at least a -25 bp rate cut by the Fed at the Tue/Wed FOMC meeting and a total of -70 bp of rate cuts by year’s end.
The markets this week will continue to focus on any fresh trade or tariff news. On Wednesday, the FOMC is expected to cut the federal funds rate target by -25 bp to 4.00%-4.25% from 4.25%-4.50% and Fed Chair Powell will deliver post-FOMC meeting comments. On Thursday, weekly initial unemployment claims are expected to fall by -23,000 to 240,000.
The markets are pricing in a 100% chance of a -25 bp rate cut and a 5% chance of a -50 bp rate cut at the conclusion of the Tue/Wed FOMC meeting. After the fully expected -25 bp rate cut at this week’s meeting, the markets are discounting an 84% chance of a second -25 bp rate cut at the next FOMC meeting on Oct 28-29. The markets are pricing in an overall -68 bp rate cut in the federal funds rate by year-end to 3.65% from the current 4.33% rate.
Overseas stock markets today are mixed. The Euro Stoxx 50 is down -0.86%. China’s Shanghai Composite closed up +0.04%. Japan’s Nikkei Stock 225 rallied to a new record high and closed up +0.30%.
Interest Rates
December 10-year T-notes (ZNZ5) today are up +1 tick. The 10-year T-note yield is down by -0.2 bp to 4.036%. Dec T-notes recovered from early losses and are slightly higher. Short covering pushed T-note higher today after stocks gave up early gains and turned lower. T-notes also have support on expectations that the Fed will cut interest rates by at least -25 bp at the conclusion of today’s 2-day FOMC meeting on Wednesday.
T-notes initially moved lower today after the US retail sales and manufacturing production reports rose more than expected. Also, supply pressures are weighing on T-notes as the Treasury will auction $13 billion of 20-year T-bonds later today.
Concerns about Fed independence are negatively impacting T-note prices due to President Trump’s attempt to fire Fed Governor Cook and Stephen Miran’s intention to hold a Fed Governor position while remaining technically in his White House role on the Council of Economic Advisors.
European government bond yields are moving higher today. The 10-year German bund yield is up +0.8 bp to 2.699%. The 10-year UK gilt yield is up +2.2 bp to 4.655%.
Eurozone July industrial production rose +0.3% m/m, weaker than expectations of +0.4% m/m, but June was revised upward to -0.6% m/m from -1.3% m/m.
Eurozone Q2 labor costs increased to +3.6% y/y from +3.4% y/y in Q1.
The German Sep ZEW survey expectations of economic growth unexpectedly rose +2.6 to 37.3, stronger than expectations of a decline to 25.0.
ECB Governing Council member Simkus said, “It is clear that inflation in the Eurozone is currently at the target level, and if we look at the medium term, it is still hovering around 2% or very close to it. Given these trends, the sequence of interest rate cuts by the ECB is very close to the end.”
Swaps are discounting a 2% chance for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on October 30.
US Stock Movers
Strength in chip makers today is leading technology stocks higher. ON Semiconductor (ON) is up more than +2% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100. Also, Intel (INTC), ASML Holding NV (ASML), Qualcomm (QCOM), and Microchip Technology (MCHP) are up more than +1%.
Energy producers and energy service providers are moving higher today, with the price of WTI crude up more than +1% at a 1.5-week high. APA Corp (APA) is up more than +4% and Diamondback Energy (FANG) is up more than +2% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100. Also, Devon Energy (DVN), Occidental Petroleum (OXY), and Valero Energy (VLO) are up more than +2%. In addition, ConocoPhillips (COP), Marathon Petroleum (MPC), Baker Hughes (BKR), Chevron (CVX), and Exxon Mobil (XOM) are up more than +1%.
Webtoon Entertainment (WBTN) is up more than +27% after Walt Disney said it plans to acquire a 2% equity interest in the company.
Bloom Energy (BE) is up more than +6% after Morgan Stanley raised its price target on the stock to $85 from $44.
Steel Dynamics (STLD) is up more than +5% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after forecasting Q3 adjusted EPS of $2.60-$2.64, better than the consensus of $2.58.
Ferguson Enterprises (FERG) is up more than +5% after reporting Q4 revenue of $8.50 billion, stronger than the consensus of $8.41 billion.
Oracle (ORCL) is up more than +2% after CBS News reported that the company is among a consortium of firms that would enable TikTok to continue operations in the US if a framework deal is finalized.
Hershey (HSY) is up more than +2% after Goldman Sachs double upgraded the stock to buy from sell with a price target of $222.
Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) is up more than +1% after its board approves an additional $500 million for its share buyback program.
Dave & Buster’s Entertainment (PLAY) is down more than -16% after reporting Q2 adjusted EPS of 40 cents, well below the consensus of 89 cents.

Exchange traded funds (ETFs) trade just like stocks, but instead of ''shares'' investors are actually buying and selling ''units''. These ''units'' can be traded back and forth just like stocks, but can also be created or destroyed to accommodate investor demand. The media sector offers some distinctly different investment options. Newsmax (NYSE: NMAX) entered the stock market as recently as March 2025, and the largely digital provider of conservative news coverage has only one quarterly earnings report under its belt. By contrast, The New York Times Company (NYSE: NYT) was founded in 1851 and entered the public stock market 56 years ago.

Newsmax and The New York Times, by the numbers
Both companies recently published their results for the period ending on June 30, 2025. Let's see how they stack up.
Newsmax posted strong top-line growth. Its second-quarter sales rose 18.4% year over year, landing at $46.4 million. The company reached 26 million cable news viewers in this quarter.
With $198 million of cash equivalents and no long-term debt to speak of, Newsmax's balance sheet looks robust at first glance. However, its bottom-line profits are consistently negative, and the cash balance was built on $426.6 million of additional paid-in capital -- financial backing provided by founder Christopher Ruddy and the stock offering in March.
Investors should watch how this shareholder-backed company manages its return on equity in the long run. It's a negative number for now, even if you back out a $68.4 million legal expense from Newsmax's expenses.
New York Times saw a slower 9.7% revenue increase in the same reporting period, as expected from a more mature company. Revenue landed at $685.9 million, with 51% coming from digital-only subscription sales. Net income rose 26.6% to $82.9 million, while free cash flow fell 30% year over year to $72.6 million.
New York Times' cash balance stood at $951.5 million by the end of June. Like Newsmax, this company doesn't carry any long-term debt. Once again, return on equity is an important financial metric to watch, with the current value perched at 17.1%.
Long story short, The New York Times is an older and larger business with slower growth but robust profits. The return-on-equity figures weigh heavily in the larger company's favor at this point, due to Newsmax's unprofitable operations.
The stock performance scorecard
That brings me over from financial statements to the stocks themselves.
Newsmax shares are trading 94% below their all-time high, which was set amid the frenzied market action on the IPO date. Skipping ahead to calmer times, the three-month return as of August 26 is a negative 29.7%.
Profit-based valuation metrics don't make sense for this stock yet, and Newsmax hasn't reported a full year of revenue figures, so it's hard to pin a reasonable market value on the stock. For what it's worth, Newsmax trades at 18.5x the company's book value and 10x its net cash balance.
New York Times investors pocketed a 7.8% total return in the last three months and a market-beating 92.5% in three years. Neither a market darling nor a bargain, the stock trades at a modest 30.7x trailing earnings and 21.3x free cash flow.
It's a mixed bag if you compare the two stocks on the metrics that actually apply to Newsmax. The New York Times stock trades at 5x book value and 18x its cash reserves.
Boring beats volatile in this media matchup
Newsmax is still finding its bearings on the public market. The stock has been volatile in the first few months, and the company's main revenue source is the unpredictable flow of advertising sales.
The New York Times has been around forever and runs a more robust business model with more subscription revenue than ad sales. The stock isn't exactly cheap, but its valuation isn't terribly lofty, either.
For better or worse, many people might pick either one of these stocks to match their political leanings. That's fine, as long as you keep the investment on the small side.
Emotional investing is rarely a recipe for strong returns. If you turn down the adrenaline spigot, The New York Times looks like a modestly priced value stock, while Newsmax seems too hot to handle in 2025.

Measures to Identify Liquid Stocks
Current Ratio: It measures current assets relative to current liabilities. The ratio gauges a company’s potential to meet short- and long-term debt obligations. A current ratio — the working capital ratio — below 1 indicates that the company has more liabilities than assets. A high current ratio does not always suggest that the company is in good financial shape. It may also indicate that the firm failed to utilize its assets significantly. Hence, a range of 1-3 is considered ideal.
Quick Ratio: Unlike the current ratio, the quick ratio — the “acid-test ratio” or “quick assets ratio” — indicates a company’s ability to pay short-term obligations. It considers inventory, excluding current assets, relative to current liabilities. A quick ratio of more than 1 is desirable, like the current ratio.
Cash Ratio: This is the most conservative ratio among the three, considering cash and cash equivalents and invested funds relative to current liabilities. It measures a company’s ability to meet existing debt obligations using the most liquid assets. Though a cash ratio of more than 1 may suggest sound financials, a higher number may indicate inefficiency in cash utilization.
A ratio greater than 1 is always desirable, but may not always represent a company’s financial condition.

The New York Times Company is a diversified media company comprising newspapers, Internet businesses and other investments. It is capitalizing on its multi-platform strategy to drive digital growth, broaden audience engagement and diversify revenue streams. Expansion into lifestyle categories such as Cooking, Games and Sports, supported by bundled subscription offerings, is deepening customer relationships and boosting retention.
NYT recently reported second-quarter 2025 results. The company's adjusted earnings per share were 58 cents, which surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 50 cents and increased from the year-ago adjusted earnings of 45 cents. Total revenues of $685.9 million came ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $669 million and increased 9.7% year over year.
NYT added approximately 230,000 net digital-only subscribers in the quarter under review compared with the end of the preceding quarter, propelled by multiple products across its portfolio. NYT’s digital-only average revenue per user (ARPU) increased to an impressive $9.64 in the second quarter from $9.34 in the year-ago period. This rise in ARPU can be attributed to subscribers transitioning from promotional pricing to higher rate plans and price hikes for certain tenured subscribers.
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for NYT’s 2025 bottom line is pinned at $2.28 per share, unchanged in the past seven days. The company has a Growth Score of B and a trailing four-quarter earnings surprise of 12.1%, on average.
Dillard's is a large departmental store chain featuring fashion apparel and home furnishings. As of Aug 14, 2025, DDS operated 272 Dillard’s stores, including 28 clearance stores, across 30 states.
DDS recently reported second-quarter 2025 results wherein net sales came in at $1.5 billion, up 1.6% year over year. Both total retail sales (which excludes CDI) and comparable store sales inched up 1%. The strong performing categories were juniors’ and children’s apparel and ladies’ accessories and lingerie while home and furniture was the weakest performing category.
Dillard’s reported adjusted earnings per share of $4.66, which topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 23% and grew 1.5% year over year.
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for DDS’ 2025 earnings is pegged at $30.47 per share, unchanged in the past seven days. The company has a Growth Score of A and a trailing four-quarter earnings surprise of 24.04%, on average.
Newmont Corporation is one of the world's largest producers of gold with several active mines in Nevada, Peru, Australia and Ghana. The company is the only gold producer listed on the S&P 500 Index. It also produces copper, silver, zinc and lead.
Newmont continues to invest in growth projects and remains focused on driving shareholder value. The company is pursuing several projects, including Tanami Expansion 2 in Australia, the Ahafo North expansion in Ghana and Cadia Panel Caves in Australia. Newmont also remains committed to divestingnon-core businesses as it shifts its strategic focus to Tier 1 assets. In April 2025, Newmont completed the sale of its Akyem operation in Ghana and its Porcupine operation in Canada, successfully executing its divestiture program announced in February 2024. The acquisition of Newcrest is expected to generate significant synergies.
Newmont's revenues for the second quarter were roughly $5.32 billion, up 20.8% from the prior-year quarter. The figure topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $4.58 billion. The increase in the top line was primarily due to higher year-over-year realized gold prices. Barring one-time items, adjusted earnings were $1.43 per share, up from 72 cents reported in the prior-year quarter. It topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.04 per share.
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2025 earnings is pegged at $5.27 per share, unchanged in the past seven days. NEM has a Growth Score of B and a trailing four-quarter earnings surprise of 32.82%, on average.
Frontdoor is the parent company of home service plan brands like American Home Shield, HSA, Landmark and OneGuard. Based in Memphis, TN, this company provides home warranties in the United States.
FTDR is gaining from its focus on new and innovative ways to boost demand for services, and the relaunch of the American Home Shield brand is a significant component of this strategy. The company’s continued emphasis on growing its member base, particularly in the DTC channel, has been driving growth.
In the last reported quarter, revenues came in at $617 million, up 14% year over year. The uptick was driven by a 2% increase in price and 12% higher volume. The higher volume was driven by the 2-10 acquisition. Real estate revenues increased 21%. Further, the number of first-year Direct-to-Consumer home warranties was 2.09 million, up 7% year over year. Gross margin expanded 130 basis points to 58%.
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2025 earnings is pegged at $3.90 per share, up 9 cents in the past seven days. FTDR has a Growth Score of A and a trailing four-quarter earnings surprise of 66.4%, on average.

Relative Strength Alert For New York Times

Investors in New York Times Co. (Symbol: NYT) saw new options become available today, for the December 19th expiration. One of the key data points that goes into the price an option buyer is willing to pay, is the time value, so with 205 days until expiration the newly available contracts represent a possible opportunity for sellers of puts or calls to achieve a higher premium than would be available for the contracts with a closer expiration. At Stock Options Channel, our YieldBoost formula has looked up and down the NYT options chain for the new December 19th contracts and identified one put and one call contract of particular interest.
The put contract at the $50.00 strike price has a current bid of 60 cents. If an investor was to sell-to-open that put contract, they are committing to purchase the stock at $50.00, but will also collect the premium, putting the cost basis of the shares at $49.40 (before broker commissions). To an investor already interested in purchasing shares of NYT, that could represent an attractive alternative to paying $55.27/share today.
Because the $50.00 strike represents an approximate 10% discount to the current trading price of the stock (in other words it is out-of-the-money by that percentage), there is also the possibility that the put contract would expire worthless. The current analytical data (including greeks and implied greeks) suggest the current odds of that happening are 74%. The current analytical data (including greeks and implied greeks) suggest the current odds of that happening are 73%.
