The company had approximately 33,276 megawatts of net generating capacity; approximately 90,000 circuit miles of transmission and distribution lines; and 883 substations. It serves approximately 12 million people through approximately 5.9 million customer accounts in the east and lower west coasts of Florida. The company was formerly known as FPL Group, Inc. and changed its name to NextEra Energy, Inc. in 2010. NextEra Energy, Inc. was founded in 1925 and is headquartered in Juno Beach, Florida.

At Holdings Channel, we have reviewed the latest batch of the 75 most recent 13F filings for the 03/31/2026 reporting period, and noticed that NextEra Energy Inc (Symbol: NEE) was held by 37 of these funds. When hedge fund managers appear to be thinking alike, we find it is a good idea to take a closer look.
Before we proceed, it is important to point out that 13F filings do not tell the whole story, because these funds are only required to disclose their long positions with the SEC, but are not required to disclose their short positions. A fund making a bearish bet against a stock by shorting calls, for example, might also be long some amount of stock as they trade around their overall bearish position. This long component could show up in a 13F filing and everyone might assume the fund is bullish, but this tells only part of the story because the bearish/short side of the position is not seen.
Having given that caveat, we believe that looking at groups of 13F filings can be revealing, especially when comparing one holding period to another. Below, let's take a look at the change in NEE positions, for this latest batch of 13F filers:

Looking beyond these particular funds in this one batch of most recent filers, we tallied up the NEE share count in the aggregate among all of the funds which held NEE at the 03/31/2026 reporting period (out of the 2,847 we looked at in total). We then compared that number to the sum total of NEE shares those same funds held back at the 12/31/2025 period, to see how the aggregate share count held by hedge funds has moved for NEE. Looking at units outstanding versus one week prior within the universe of ETFs covered at ETF Channel, the biggest outflow was seen in the State Street Utilities Select Sector SPDR ETF, where 18,600,000 units were destroyed, or a 3.5% decrease week over week. A utility powerhouse with a growing nuclear fleet
A unique aspect of NextEra is that it generates revenue from both regulated and non-regulated businesses. Regulated businesses tend to offer stability, as there is constant demand, but they can also face revenue constraints.
NextEra's subsidiary, Florida Power & Light (FPL), shows that the business model is not a hindrance at all, as FPL delivers consistent, reliable cash flow. The subsidiary generated net income of a little over $5 billion in 2025, up from $4.5 billion in 2024.
Looking at some of its other operations, its nuclear energy segment has seven units in operation, and Alphabet signed a 25-year agreement with NextEra to purchase carbon-free nuclear energy from a plant in Iowa. The plant was shut down in 2020, but NextEra expects it to be up and running by early 2029. It also has long-term contracted businesses in gas generation, storage, and renewables.
A full energy portfolio
Like NextEra, Duke Energy has a regulated utility business, offering energy services to over 7 million customers, as well as retail natural gas services to 1.5 million customers.
For its nuclear energy endeavors, Duke operates 11 units across North Carolina and South Carolina, which the company says generate about half of the electricity for its customers in those states.
It also announced in January that it had a battery energy storage system operational at a former coal plant. "Utility-scale battery systems are particularly useful for cold winter mornings before the sun comes up, filling the gap before solar generation is available," the company said in its press release. Its portfolio also includes solar, hydroelectric, biopower, and the conversion of landfill methane into power.
How to determine a winner from the energy stock showdown
Picking a winner comes down to what an individual investor is seeking for their portfolio. For those looking to boost income generation, Duke offers a dividend yield of 3.3%, while NextEra's is 2.5%. Duke has also reliably paid that dividend for 100 consecutive years.
For investors seeking more stock price appreciation, NextEra may be the better fit. Shares are up roughly 43% over the last year, while the Duke Energy stock price has climbed a little over 5% during the same time.
A forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 24.1 for NextEra, compared to Duke's 19.1, suggests investors expect more earnings growth from NextEra and are willing to pay up for the stock. That said, when both stocks have been down over the last five years, NextEra shares were hit harder, so NextEra's upside also comes with seemingly more downside.
Both companies can fit into a portfolio, but the winner for conservative, income-seeking investors is Duke Energy. The winner for more aggressive investors who favor stock price appreciation is NextEra Energy.

Plug Power (NASDAQ: PLUG) and NextEra Energy (NYSE: NEE) are two sides of the same "green wave" coin. Both companies represent a long-term wager on the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy.
However, while Plug Power is one of the most widely followed speculative growth stocks, NextEra is more like the "slow and steady" blue chip type of play. Many income-focused investors also consider NextEra one of the best renewable energy dividend stocks.

When it comes to choosing one of these renewable energy stocks over the other, you may ask, "Why not both?" After all, in a scenario where the world transitions to zero-net-emissions energy, both companies stand to benefit, right?
Maybe, maybe not. For one, while one of these companies has a growth catalyst completely unrelated to the green wave, the bull case for the other company hinges on a particular type of renewable energy gaining critical mass.
Secondly, while one of these companies has a long-standing issue with cash burn and share dilution, the other has a far more certain path to higher prices, not to mention a strong track record of earnings and dividend growth.
Plug Power: Despite comeback talk, uncertainty still runs high
Plug Power shares have experienced roller-coaster price action over the past few years. During the early 2020s, when Biden administration-era changes in energy policy suggested significant growth ahead for hydrogen stocks, shares traded at split-adjusted prices above $40 per share.
However, between failing to meet high expectations, coupled with macroeconomic and political changes that affected the adoption of "green hydrogen," or hydrogen power generated from renewable sources, Plug Power experienced a more than 98% drop in price.
More recently, however, Plug Power has embarked on a comeback. Shares have zoomed from as low as $0.69 per share last May to just over $3 per share today. Chalk this up to a spate of bullish developments, including the recent announcement of better-than-expected quarterly results.
A factor driving these improved results is the company's pivot away from "green hydrogen" and back toward being a provider of hydrogen power products, such as electrolyzers, and hydrogen-fueled material handing equipment.
Management is now confident that Plug Power will hit positive income this year and become generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) profitable by 2028.
However, uncertainty remains high. For one thing, Plug Power has a history of making promises it ultimately fails to keep. For instance, back in 2021, management was touting Plug Power as a billion-dollar business by 2025. Last year, revenue came in at around $710 million, with the company reporting a net loss of around $1.7 billion.
Also, while Plug could indeed grow in the years ahead, share dilution may limit the extent to which this positively impacts Plug's share price. Plug Power likely needs to raise additional cash to fund growth and cover near-term operating losses.
In February, shareholders approved a plan to increase the company's authorized share count from 1.5 billion to 3 billion shares outstanding. While not certain, this suggests that management may be mulling another dilutive equity raise.
NextEra Energy: A renewable growth story at a fair price
Among old-school utility stocks, NextEra has benefited greatly from the renewable energy revolution. The Juno Beach, Florida-based company, parent of Florida Power & Light, has invested billions into renewable energy projects. As a result of its forward-thinking approach to renewables, investors have typically valued the utility at a premium to peers.
But while NextEra tanked, when "green wave" bullishness took a breather from 2022 to 2024, NextEra has picked up an additional growth catalyst. That is, NextEra benefited from rising demand for electricity, driven by the proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. Make no mistake: The AI catalyst isn't going to create exponential growth for NextEra, as a "green hydrogen" boom could for Plug Power.
However, this growth could still pave the way for strong total returns for this stock. Management anticipates NextEra's earnings to grow by around 8% annually over the next decade, in line with prior growth rates. This should help the stock sustain its 23 times forward earnings valuation, with shares rising in line with earnings growth.
Long term, gains from NextEra's dividend, if reinvested, could significantly boost total returns. NextEra has a forward dividend yield of nearly 2.75%. Having raised its dividend during each of the past 32 years, NextEra is less than two decades away from becoming one of the Dividend Kings, or companies that have raised their dividends for 50 years or more. Dividend growth has averaged just over 10% over the past five years.
Slow and steady is the clear winner here
Plug Power may seem to have tremendous comeback potential, but execution and dilution risk remain high. NextEra Energy, on the other hand, may not "go to the moon" if the stars align perfectly, but even if the situation merely turns out as expected, the stock could generate strong gains over a long time frame.
For individual investors, where time in the market matters more than timing the market, Next Era is clearly the stronger choice.

Bloom Energy is growing quickly
Bloom Energy stock is up over 1,000% in a year. It is only appropriate for aggressive growth investors. That said, the company's fuel cells are in high demand right now, and it is growing quickly. Revenues increased 37% in 2025, and the company's backlog sits at $20 billion, of which only $6 billion is product-related. The rest of the backlog is tied to services provided to owners of its fuel cells.
Services are the real flywheel for the business, with the large services backlog suggesting years of strong revenue performance ahead. The big draw right now, however, is that Bloom Energy's fuel cells help to solve a problem. They allow companies to generate power on-site when a grid connection isn't quickly available or to provide backup power for situations where facilities, like data centers, can't afford grid-related downtime. Highlighting the company's attractive technology, it just inked an agreement with Oracle (NYSE: ORCL) for up to 2.8 gigawatts of fuel cells to support the tech giant's investment in data centers.
Brookfield Renewable is the all-in-one option
Brookfield Renewable owns a globally diversified portfolio of clean energy assets. It has exposure across the hydroelectric, solar, wind, and nuclear power sectors. It also owns battery storage assets. An active portfolio manager, it is always buying, building, and selling assets. It is partnered with tech giants like Google and Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) to provide them with clean energy.
Brookfield Renewable is an income investment, with management targeting dividend growth of 5% to 9% annually. That said, there are two ways to own it. The partnership share class yields 4.7%, while the corporate shares yield 3.9%. They represent the same business and have the same dividend; the yield difference exists because there is greater demand for the corporate shares. The dividend has grown steadily for years, and there's no particular reason why smaller investors should avoid the higher-yielding partnership units.
If you want a simple way to get the broadest possible exposure to the clean energy sector, you'll be hard-pressed to find a better option than Brookfield Renewable.
NextEra Energy is for those who want a middle ground
If you aren't ready to jump into the clean energy sector with both feet, then NextEra is probably the best choice for you. The core of the business is the company's regulated utility operations in Florida. This half of NextEra's business is a slow-and-steady grower. On top of that, it has layered a fast-growing solar and wind power operation. At this point, NextEra Energy is one of the world's leading players in solar and wind.
The dividend yield is 2.7%, with the dividend expected to grow by around 6% a year over the next couple of years. With decades of dividend growth behind it, NextEra Energy is a reliable dividend growth stock that even more conservative investors should be comfortable owning. It probably won't be exciting, but it lets you get some exposure to renewable power without having to own a business entirely reliant on the success of the green transition.
How deep do you want to go?
If green energy investments were a swimming pool, Bloom Energy would be the deep end. Only the most aggressive investors should consider this highly focused, fast-growing business. Brookfield Renewable is a middle ground where you could swim if you wanted, but the water is shallow enough that you could stand up if you needed to. It is a good balance of risk and reward. NextEra Energy is the shallow end of the pool, where you can't really swim, but you are still getting your feet wet.

Constellation Energy vs. NextEra Energy: Which Utility Stock Wins Now?

U.S. stocks closed lower on Thursday as rising geopolitical tensions and uncertainty around Iran weighed on sentiment, while investors continue to evaluate earnings results and economic data. The Nasdaq Composite, the S&P 500 and the Dow all ended in negative territory.
How Did The Benchmarks Perform?
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) fell 0.4%, or 179.71 points, to close at 49,310.32. Fourteen components of the 30-stock index ended in negative territory, and 16 ended in positive territory.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite declined 0.9%, to close at 24,438.50.
The S&P 500 lost 0.4% or 29.50 points, to end at 7,108.40. Out of 11 broad sectors of the broad-market index, six ended in negative territory, and five ended in positive territory. The Information Technology Select Sector SPDR (XLK), the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) and the Financials Select Sector SPDR (XLF) fell 1.5%, 0.9%, and 0.8%, respectively, while the Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) rose 1.7%.
The fear gauge, the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), increased by 2.1% to 19.31. A total of 17.41 billion shares were traded on Thursday, lower than the last 20-session average of 18.33 billion. The S&P 500 posted 41 new 52-week highs and eight new lows, and the Nasdaq Composite recorded 124 new highs and 103 new lows.
Uncertainty Grows Around Iran Talks
Iranian politician Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has pulled out of the Iranian team negotiating with the United States, casting doubts on the progress of the ongoing talks, according to Reuters.
Donald Trump told the U.S. Navy to destroy any vessels attempting to lay mines in the Strait of Hormuz. These developments have kept market sentiment cautious with close attention to further geopolitical developments.
Q1 Earnings Results in Focus
American Airlines Group Inc. AAL reported a first-quarter 2026 adjusted loss of $0.4 per share, missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $0.45. Quarterly net revenues were $13.91 billion, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 0.72%.
American Express Company AXP reported first-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings of $4.28 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $4.03 per share. Quarterly net revenues were $18.91 billion, which outpaced the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 1.55%.
NextEra Energy, Inc. NEE reported first-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings of $1.09 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $0.98 per share. Quarterly net revenues came in at $6.7 billion, missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 7.01%.
Union Pacific Corporation UNP reported first-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings of $2.93 per share, outpacing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.85 per share. Quarterly net revenues were $6.22 billion, above the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 0.14%.
Economic Data
In economic data released on Thursday, the Labor Department said that jobless claims totaled 214,000 for the week ending April 18, an increase of 6,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 208,000. The four-week moving average was 210,750, an increase of 750 from the previous week’s revised average of 210,000.
Continuing claims came in at 1,821,000, reflecting an increase of 12,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 1,809,000. The 4-week moving average was 1,812,250, an increase of 1,250 from the previous week's revised average of 1,811,000.

NextEra Energy (NYSE: NEE) isn't your average utility. It has grown its adjusted earnings per share at a 10% compound annual rate over the last decade, more than four times faster than the average utility (2.2%). Several factors have fueled its robust growth rate, including operating the largest electric utility in Florida and focusing on developing clean energy infrastructure.

Off to a terrific start
NextEra Energy is "off to a terrific start for the year, delivering strong first-quarter results," stated CEO John Ketchum in the first-quarter earnings press release. The energy company generated $2.3 billion, or $1.09 per share, in adjusted earnings in the first quarter, up 10% year over year. Both of its businesses performed well during the quarter.
The company's electric utility in Florida, FPL, reported nearly $1.5 billion in net income, or $0.70 per share, up more than 9% from last year. FPL added almost 100,000 new customers over the past year, benefiting from Florida's rapid growth. That's enabling it to invest in growing its generation portfolio, which included adding about 600 megawatts (MW) of solar energy capacity in the quarter, boosting its portfolio to over 8.5 gigawatts (GW).
Meanwhile, NextEra Energy Resources reported adjusted net income of over $1 billion, or $0.50 per share, up nearly 14% from last year. It continues to benefit from building out additional clean energy infrastructure to support the power demand of other utilities and large corporate customers.
The powerful growth should continue
NextEra Energy also continues to make excellent progress on its growth strategy. FPL filed its annual 10-year site plan, which includes building 4 GW of new gas-fired power generation, over 12 GW of solar, and more than 7 GW of storage solutions over the next decade.
Meanwhile, the energy resources segment had a record quarter, with 4 GW in new renewable and storage project originations. The company is also off to a strong start on its data center hub strategy. The U.S. Department of Commerce selected it to build 9.5 GW of gas-fired power projects to support large electricity loads in Texas and Pennsylvania. The company is working toward securing 40 hubs by the end of this year.
These projects support NextEra's long-term earnings growth expectations. The company anticipates delivering earnings-per-share growth of more than 8% annually through 2035. That should support 6% annual dividend growth through at least 2028, driving its 2.7%-yielding payout even higher.
High-powered total return potential
NextEra Energy expects to grow briskly over the next decade as it supports surging electricity demand across the U.S. That positions it to generate robust total returns (dividend income plus price appreciation). This Top Energy Stock's High-Powered Growth Engine Continues to Hum Along

NextEra Energy NEE reported first-quarter 2026 results with adjusted earnings per share of $1.09, up 10.1% from 99 cents a year ago. The figure beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 98 cents by 11.2%. Strong contributions from both Florida Power & Light (“FPL”) and NextEra Energy Resources allowed the company to surpass expectations.
GAAP earnings per share were $1.04 compared with 40 cents in the year-ago quarter. The difference between GAAP and operating earnings per share in the reported quarter was due to one-time losses of 6 cents and a benefit of a penny from income tax.
Revenues
Total operating revenues were $6.70 billion, up 7.3% year over year but below the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $7.20 billion by 7.0%. A key highlight was NextEra Energy Resources’ record renewables and storage origination, which added 4 gigawatts (“GW”) to backlog.

NEE’s Revenue Mix Reflected Strength in Both Engines
Operating revenues increased from $6.25 billion in the first quarter of 2025, supported by gains across both major operating platforms. By segment, FPL generated $4.27 billion of operating revenues in the quarter, while NextEra Energy Resources produced $2.31 billion, with Corporate and Other adding $119 million.
Highlights of NextEra Energy's Release
FPL’s growth in the reported quarter was largely fueled by ongoing business investments. Operationally, FPL’s regulatory capital employed increased about 8.8% year over year, while the customer base expanded nearly 100,000 in the quarter. The company also highlighted continued solar buildout, placing roughly 600 megawatts of new solar into service and taking its owned and operated solar portfolio to more than 8.5 GW, alongside ongoing efforts to keep bills low and reliability high.
NextEra Energy Resources had a strong quarter for new renewables and storage origination, adding to its backlog. With the new additions, NextEra Energy Resources' backlog now totals 33 GW after taking into account more than 0.3 GW of new projects placed into service as of April 23, 2026.
NextEra Energy Resources also emphasized progress on its data center hub strategy, including selection by the U.S. Department of Commerce to build 9.5 GW of new gas-fired generation to serve large loads in Texas and Pennsylvania, with it positioned to develop, build and operate the projects.
Total operating expenses in the first quarter were $4.75 billion, up 17.9%, due to higher operational and maintenance expenses and higher fuel, purchased power and interchange expenses.
Financial Highlights
On the balance sheet at March 31, 2026, NextEra Energy reported cash and cash equivalents of nearly $2 billion and total assets of $221.42 billion.
Long-term debt stood at $93.95 billion, while total equity was $66.63 billion.
Cash flow dynamics reflected the capital-intensive model: net cash provided by operating activities was $2.61 billion, net cash used in investing activities was $10.82 billion and net cash provided by financing activities was $7.68 billion, including $1.30 billion of dividends on common stock during the quarter.
The utility’s full-year growth narrative continued to center on capital deployment, with nearly $3.2 billion of capital expenditures in the quarter and expected full-year capital investments of $12 billion to $13 billion.
NEE Guidance and Financial Position Stayed in Focus
NextEra Energy maintained the 2026 adjusted earnings per share expectation of $3.92 to $4.02 and said it is targeting the high end of that range. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2026 earnings per share is currently pegged at $4.01, which is near the top of the guidance.
In the long term, the company continues to target adjusted earnings per share growth of more than 8% annually through 2032 to 2035, using 2025 adjusted earnings of $3.71 as the base.
