The company had approximately 33,276 megawatts of net generating capacity; approximately 90,000 circuit miles of transmission and distribution lines; and 883 substations. It serves approximately 12 million people through approximately 5.9 million customer accounts in the east and lower west coasts of Florida. The company was formerly known as FPL Group, Inc. and changed its name to NextEra Energy, Inc. in 2010. NextEra Energy, Inc. was founded in 1925 and is headquartered in Juno Beach, Florida.

The case for top-tier dividend stocks
Top-tier dividend stocks provide what investors need to succeed in the current climate. By "top-tier," I'm referring to the stocks of companies that have resilient underlying business models, strong balance sheets, and growing dividends.
Bonds can become more attractive to investors when the Federal Reserve maintains or increases interest rates. However, the stocks of some dividend stocks can compete with bond yields while also offering growth that bonds can't match.
We don't have to look far back to see how top-tier dividend stocks perform in a higher-rate environment. During the 2022 bear market, the Fed cranked up rates. The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) plunged 19%. But dividend stocks handily outperformed the broader market.
There are several reasons why top-tier dividend stocks are ideal picks when rates rise. For one thing, they're usually viewed by many investors as safe havens. Their growing dividends can provide a hedge against high inflation. Their businesses also often have pricing power that protects their profit margins from inflationary erosion.
Dividend stocks that fit the moment
I can think of several top-tier dividend stocks that look particularly appealing with today's dynamics. Each of them checks off all the boxes mentioned earlier.
The Coca-Cola Company (NYSE: KO) arguably stands in a league of its own. It's a member of the Dividend Kings, a group of companies that have increased their dividends for at least 50 consecutive years. Coca-Cola's streak of dividend hikes is now at 64 straight years. Its forward dividend yield is a healthy 2.6%. The beverage giant also commands solid pricing power.
Furthermore, Coca-Cola's stock delivered a nice gain the last time the Fed raised interest rates. So did Enterprise Products Partners (NYSE: EPD). The pipeline stock trounced the S&P 500 in 2022. Enterprise's business is largely insulated from inflation, with roughly 90% of its long-term contracts containing price escalation provisions.
The midstream energy leader has increased its distribution for an impressive 27 consecutive years. Enterprise Products Partners doesn't need much unit-price appreciation to deliver a double-digit total return, given its distribution yield of around 5.9%.
Utility stocks also often hold up quite well during periods with the possibility of rate hikes and sticky inflation. I like Dominion Energy (NYSE: D) in today's market. Granted, Dominion's share price fell more than the S&P 500 did in 2022. However, the company is in a stronger position now for two key reasons.
First, Dominion enjoys a massive tailwind from the rapid build-out of data centers. Its home state, Virginia, is the world's hottest data center market. Second, NextEra Energy (NYSE: NEE), the largest utility by market cap, is in the process of acquiring Dominion. The price tag for the deal is almost 15% higher than Dominion's current share price.
What if the tide turns?
Of course, it's entirely possible that inflation could wane if the Iran war is concluded soon and oil prices sink. The Fed may not be forced to increase rates after all. Would that mean these three top-tier dividend stocks would become poor choices for investors? I don't think so.
Coca-Cola still has solid growth prospects, especially in developing markets. The demand for U.S.-produced natural gas should remain strong, boding well for Enterprise Products Partners' business. Both Enterprise and Dominion are poised to continue benefiting from the explosive data center growth. These three dividend stocks are good picks regardless of interest rate and inflation trends.

NextEra Energy's interest in Dominion Energy underscores the AI data center industry’s soaring demand for electricity.
Some potential pairings within the utility industry are better suited than others in terms of geography and infrastructure integration.
It will come as no surprise that nuclear power production is a prominent factor in predicting which two utility names will be the next to team up.
Major mergers and acquisitions within the utility sector are relatively rare; most of the dealmaking in this business to-date has been for fairly small, affordable names that easily "bolt on" to existing operations. That's what makes NextEra Energy's (NYSE: NEE) recently announced intention of acquiring fellow power provider Dominion Energy (NYSE: D) so interesting.
Both companies are already among the biggest names in the business. Combining them -- assuming regulators allow it -- will create the world's biggest utility company by a country mile.

And this begs the question, now that other utility names have good reason to fear missing out on an acquisition opportunity, what name might be the next target? For that matter, which name might be the next buyer?
Not the first, but certainly the biggest (and for a good reason)
NextEra Energy's $67 billion effort to own Dominion isn't actually the first one of these mega mergers, even if it's the biggest. In March, Global Infrastructure Partners and EQT Infrastructure unveiled their plans to jointly buy AES Corp. Constellation Energy (NASDAQ: CEG) recently closed on a deal largely to combine its nuclear fleet with Calpine's geothermal and natural gas operations. Google parent Alphabet is even getting in on the action, deciding late last year to shell out nearly $5 billion for Intersect, which specializes in powering artificial intelligence (AI) data centers.
That's the chief driver for most of this recent dealmaking, of course -- the artificial intelligence industry needs more electricity than the nation's utility industry is capable of producing. Indeed, Goldman Sachs believes U.S. data center electricity consumption will double within a year. Providing it has become a very lucrative business, or in the case of Alphabet's purchase of Intersect, it helps assure you have it when needed.
That's also the chief reason NextEra is interested in Dominion, even if neither party explicitly said it. Dominion's core market is Virginia, which is home to roughly 700 data centers.
That's an important detail to keep in mind when predicting the next likely acquisition target within the utilities business.
The top prospective buyer and buyee
All predictions about any aspect of the stock market should be taken with a BIG grain of salt. Nobody has access to a functioning crystal ball. There's still value in the thought exercise, however, if only to compare and contrast different companies.
To this end, Vistra (NYSE: VST) is arguably the next -- or at least one of the next -- likely acquisition targets within the utility sector.
It's not exactly a major household name, mostly because it's not much of a consumer-facing company. Through a handful of other brands, it directly serves approximately 5 million residential and business utility customers. The core of its business, however, is wholesaling electricity generated by its own fleet of natural gas, coal, nuclear, and renewable power plants to other utility companies. All told, it's got enough capacity to generate up to 44,000 megawatts of electricity. That's enough to power about 30 million homes, or, of course, several hundred data centers.
The crux of the bullish argument is simply that it's ready and able to create and deliver power to grids in Texas, California, and to most of the northeastern United States today, leveraging its long-established presence as a wholesaler with access to key portions of the nationwide grid.
That's how it was able to secure direct deals with Amazon and the Facebook parent Meta Platforms to help both parties power their next-generation centers, ultimately justifying and supporting the establishment of new nuclear power facilities that could serve future customers beyond these two big ones.
The kicker: Vistra shares remain reasonably affordable at around 15 times this year's projected per-share earnings of $9.08, while the company's market cap itself is a fairly modest $50 billion. That's within reach for most prospective suitors.
To this end, which player might actually be interested enough to pull this trigger? Again, take any such prediction with a grain of salt. Nobody really knows.
If there was any outfit that would gain from such a deal simply because it doesn't have -- and can't necessarily build -- what Vistra brings to the table, it's the aforementioned Constellation Energy, which already has the biggest nuclear power fleet in the United States. In fact, it generates more nuclear power than the rest of the United States' utility companies combined, accounting for more than 80% of its total power production. It can most definitely find some synergies with Vistra's nuclear power development plans.
It's also worth noting that, following the Calpine tie-up, Constellation has a strong presence in Texas, California, and much of the Northeast, where Vistra also does. To the extent geography matters, the company would have little trouble integrating Vistra with its other operations, and vice versa, perhaps gaining access to a grid or connection it might not otherwise have.
There's also no denying that, as the nation's fifth-largest utility (by market cap and revenue), Constellation is better positioned financially than most to get such a deal done.
The one to beat
Once again, it can't be stressed enough that this is strictly a well-reasoned guess. This tie-up may or may not ever materialize. Others might materialize first. Anything's possible. And of course, betting on an acquisition alone is a lousy reason to own any stock.
This particular pairing does make a great deal of logical and logistical sense, though. It's a prospect that will be tough to top with any other proposed combination of utility companies anyway.

NextEra Energy (NEE) Stock Sinks As Market Gains: What You Should Know

GE Vernova Inc.’s GEV Electrification segment is benefiting from several long-term trends, including accelerating electricity demand, industrial electrification, grid expansion and the rapid buildout of artificial intelligence data centers. These trends are driving substantial investment in transmission networks, substations, grid automation technologies and power conversion equipment.
The momentum was evident in the first quarter of 2026. Electrification orders increased 86% organically year over year to $7.1 billion, while revenues climbed 61%. Growth was broad-based across the segment's portfolio, including power transmission equipment, grid solutions and electrification technologies.
The Electrification segment's backlog exceeded $42 billion at the end of the first quarter, reflecting continued customer demand for transmission infrastructure and grid modernization projects. Utilities around the world are investing in new transmission capacity to connect power generation assets and improve grid reliability as electricity consumption continues to rise.
Profitability is improving alongside growth. Electrification EBITDA more than doubled from the prior-year period, while EBITDA margin expanded to 17.8% from 11.1% a year ago. The improvement reflects higher volumes, favorable pricing, improved project execution and a greater mix of higher-margin products and services.
GEV invested $0.4 billion in capital expenditures, including initiatives to expand production capacity in its Power and Electrification businesses. This investment is part of the company's commitment to deploy $6 billion between 2025 and 2028, including $1 billion from Prolec GE during the 2026-2028 period.
With demand strengthening across multiple end markets, the Electrification segment is becoming an increasingly important contributor to GE Vernova's growth and profitability profile.

NextEra Energy (NYSE: NEE) ranks as the largest utility company by market cap. It owns Florida Power & Light, the largest electric utility in the U.S., which provides electricity to around 12 million people in Florida. The company also operates the largest energy infrastructure developer in the U.S.
As a top utility, NextEra Energy arguably has one of the safest businesses around. The company provides services that consumers and businesses absolutely must have. It's also a regulated monopoly with no direct competition.
NextEra pays a dividend that yields 2.9%. The company increased its dividend by 10% in 2026 and expects around 6% growth over the next two years. NextEra's dividend payout ratio of 59% gives it the financial flexibility to achieve this goal.
One knock against utility stocks is that they usually don't deliver exceptional growth. However, NextEra Energy thinks it will grow robustly over the next decade, with rising demand for artificial intelligence (AI) one of its key growth drivers. The company also plans to acquire Dominion Energy (NYSE: D) in a deal that would make it the No. 1 utility in nearly every category.
3. Realty Income
Realty Income (NYSE: O) is the world's sixth-largest global real estate investment trust (REIT). It owns 15,571 properties leased to 1,786 clients. The company's tenants represent 92 industries, with grocery stores, convenience stores, home improvement stores, and dollar stores making up roughly one-third of its total annualized base rent.
The REIT has generated positive operation returns (year-over-year adjusted funds from operations per share growth plus dividend yield) for 31 consecutive years. Its occupancy rates have consistently topped the industry medians for decades and have never fallen below 96.6% in any year.
Realty Income offers an especially juicy dividend yield of 5.4%. The company has increased its dividend for over 31 consecutive years. Even better for income investors, the REIT pays a monthly dividend for 670 consecutive months.
What about growth potential? Realty Income checks off this box, too. Europe is an especially attractive opportunity, with an estimated total addressable market of $8.5 trillion and fragmented competition.

When investors think about the annual summer driving season, oil and gasoline have historically been the primary focus. This year, oil and gasoline have been headline news daily due to the geopolitical conflict in the Middle East. That's likely to remain the case regardless of how much people drive.
But high energy prices could shift demand, making electricity more important than ever. Three stocks you may want to keep an eye on are NextEra Energy (NYSE: NEE), Constellation Energy (NASDAQ: CEG), and Brookfield Renewable (NYSE: BEP)(NYSE: BEPC). Here's a primer on each one.

The EV fleet is bigger than ever before
Normally, driving season is about energy companies like integrated energy giant Chevron (NYSE: CVX) and refiner Valero (NYSE: VLO). Chevron's business spans the entire energy value chain, from producing oil to transporting it and processing it into gasoline and other products. Valero sits at the end of the chain, transforming oil into other products. Energy companies like these will likely see a boost from driving season.
However, the bigger story today is the geopolitical conflict in the Middle East. It is an ongoing event that will likely have far more sway over energy prices and, thus, the performance of energy stocks, than the driving season. However, there's another possible consequence from this conflict.
In early 2026, sales of used electric vehicles (EVs) spiked. One logical reason for that is high energy costs. Meanwhile, the percentage of EVs among all vehicles on the road is roughly 2%. Some might argue that 2% is a tiny number, which it is, but it represents more than 5.5 million vehicles. That's a substantial number on an absolute basis, and with gasoline prices so high, consumers could favor EVs over combustion engine vehicles.
Demand is already high for electricity
Potential electricity demand this driving season will add to the demand already coming from data centers and artificial intelligence. The three together are key factors in the expected step change in overall demand, with electricity demand projected to grow by 60% between 2025 and 2045. For reference, demand only grew 9% between 2005 and 2025. Those stats come from NextEra Energy, the world's largest utility. It is also one of the world's largest producers of solar and wind power.
NextEra is set to get even larger, with plans to buy competitor Dominion Energy (NYSE: D). That will expand its geographic reach to four states and set it up for even more rapid long-term growth. If high oil prices lead consumers to use more electricity this driving season, the long-term story could get even better here. In other words, 2026 could be an important inflection point for the business and the stock.
Nuclear power is also becoming an increasingly important source of electricity. Contract power generator Constellation Energy has one of the largest U.S. fleets of nuclear reactors. It is already seeing increased demand from data centers, and transportation demand could be icing on the cake. Notably, it recently acquired Calpine, a company focused on natural gas power plants. Those often get tapped during peak demand periods, like when it is warm in the summer. If this year's driving season comes with an electric demand spike in transportation, Constellation Energy could be a big near-term beneficiary.
Increased demand for electricity from transportation will also be a long-term benefit to Brookfield Renewable. This company has a global portfolio of renewable power assets. It sells power under long-term contracts, so there won't likely be a near-term impact on its business. However, if this driving season marks a shift toward electric vehicles, the clean energy Brookfield Renewable provides could become increasingly important globally. That could easily increase the rate at which Brookfield Renewable builds new assets, which investors would likely price into the stock pretty quickly.
This summer could be the leading edge of an important change
Electricity is an increasingly important source of energy. When oil prices are low, the transition from carbon energy sources to electricity isn't as pressing. However, with oil prices at lofty levels, electricity looks increasingly attractive. This year's driving season could be an important test.
Constellation Energy is a more growth-oriented story, noting it only has a dividend yield of around 0.6%. However, NextEra Energy's yield is 2.9%, and Brookfield Renewable Partners' yield is 4.2%. Both have solid histories of annual dividend increases, making them attractive to dividend investors.
