NextEra Energy, Inc., through its subsidiaries, generates, transmits, distributes, and sells electric power to retail and wholesale customers in North America. The company generates electricity through wind, solar, nuclear,natural gas, and other clean energy. It also develops, constructs, and operates long-term contracted assets that consists of clean energy solutions, such as renewable generation facilities, battery storage projects, and electric transmission facilities; sells energy commodities; and owns, develops, constructs, manages and operates electric generation facilities in wholesale energy markets. The company had approximately 33,276 megawatts of net generating capacity; approximately 90,000 circuit miles of transmission and distribution lines; and 883 substations. It serves approximately 12 million people through approximately 5.9 million customer accounts in the east and lower west coasts of Florida. The company was formerly known as FPL Group, Inc. and changed its name to NextEra Energy, Inc. in 2010. NextEra Energy, Inc. was founded in 1925 and is headquartered in Juno Beach, Florida.

NextEra Energy looks like a high-quality but not cheap defensive asset: the operating base is strong, and the valuation already reflects a significant portion of that quality. In terms of earnings and efficiency, the picture is convincing: ROE of 12.66%, ROA of 3.91%, ROI of 5.38%, and net profit margin of 29.37% are above the industry median, while the 5-year trend is generally improving. Gross margin remains at a very high level of 81.67%, and operating margin stays around 29–31%, which points to business stability and good cost control. Revenue, EBITDA, operating profit, and net income have generally increased compared with earlier periods, and equity is rising, which supports underlying financial resilience. At the same time, leverage is noticeable: debt-to-equity is 1.41, long-term debt is increasing, and both current and quick ratios are below 1, which is typical for the utilities sector but still limits financial flexibility. From a valuation perspective, the stock looks somewhat expensive: P/E, P/S, and P/B are above the industry median, with P/S and P/B especially well above average levels, reducing the margin of safety for re-rating. P/FCF does not provide a useful signal because of a zero value, so it cannot be relied on as a source of additional upside. The dividend yield of around 0.73% looks modest for a defensive stock and does not fully compensate for the premium in the multiples. In recent quarters, P/E and P/B multiples have declined slightly, which has partially improved the picture, but not enough to call the stock clearly undervalued. Overall, the fundamentals support a moderately positive view of the business quality, but the high relative valuation and debt burden limit the upside potential from multiple expansion. For an investor, this means NEE remains a strong company with stable earnings and solid efficiency metrics, but the current price is already close to fair value and calls for a cautious, conservative approach.

An ideal partnership
This partnership brings together two of the biggest players in energy and infrastructure. NextEra Energy is the country’s largest electric utility and a leader in developing clean energy infrastructure. Meanwhile, Brookfield is a leading global investment firm with over $1 trillion in assets under management across energy, infrastructure, private equity, real estate, and credit.
NextEra Energy will build and own the dedicated generation resources to power the campus. It plans to construct up to 2 gigawatts (GW) of natural gas-fired power generation and up to 2.6 GW of battery storage systems. It will add the power generation in stages as the data center campus ramps up, matching the facilities' needs with new supply to protect local consumers.
Meanwhile, Brookfield will fund the development of a data center campus with more than 1.2 GW of compute capacity. It aims to have the project fully constructed by 2032. Brookfield will lease the land from the Department of Energy and repurpose the site of a former Cold War-era uranium-enrichment plant. That site is ideally suited for a large-scale redevelopment project given its existing on-site infrastructure.
What it means for investors
For NextEra, this project is part of its data center hub strategy. The utility is working on 30 potential hubs and expects that number to rise to 40 by year-end. Its base case is to deliver 15 GW by 2035, with an upside case of 30 GW or more. The base case is a driver of NextEra’s plan to grow adjusted earnings per share by more than 8% annually through 2035. This large-scale project helps support the base case while increasing the likelihood that it can achieve its upside case.
Meanwhile, this project will serve as the seed for Brookfield’s plan to invest $100 billion in AI infrastructure. The company launched its $100 billion AI infrastructure investment program last year by creating the Brookfield Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Fund, backed by itself, Nvidia, and the Kuwait Investment Authority. Another seed investment in that fund is Brookfield’s now $25 billion framework agreement with Bloom Energy for behind-the-meter power solutions. AI infrastructure investments are a key driver of Brookfield’s plan to grow its earnings at a 25% compound annual rate over the next five years.
Executing their AI strategies
NextEra Energy and Brookfield are both investing heavily to support the build-out of crucial AI infrastructure. This project is a meaningful one to further both strategies. While a project of this size carries significant execution risk, both companies have excellent records of delivering large-scale projects on time and on budget. Their AI infrastructure investments make them two of the top ways to capitalize on the AI megatrend.

NextEra and Brookfield Are Building a $100 Billion Data Center Campus in Kentucky. Here's What Investors Need to Know.

Oklo (NYSE: OKLO) got off to a fast start. The small modular nuclear reactor (SMR) developer began trading on the New York Stock Exchange in May 2024 at around $10 per share and rocketed to nearly $175 per share by October 2025. Unfortunately, it has been all downhill from there. Shares currently sit more than 75% below their peak.
While I like a good bargain, I'm still not buying this nuclear energy stock. Here's why and the one I'm buying instead.

Lots of promise, but it hasn't delivered yet
Oklo is developing fast fission power plants that could eventually produce clean, reliable, and affordable energy at scale. It has secured a couple of major customers. In 2024, it formed a landmark strategic relationship with the privately held data center operator Switch to deploy 12 gigawatts (GW) of advanced nuclear power, in one of the largest corporate clean power agreements ever signed. Oklo also signed an agreement with Meta Platforms earlier this year to support 1.2 GW of nuclear energy developments in Ohio. These deals will help the tech companies secure the power they need in the AI age.
However, my issue with Oklo is that it currently isn't producing any power. Oklo is building its first Aurora powerhouse at the Idaho National Laboratory, which won't be operational until late 2027 to early 2028. Meanwhile, it expects to start construction on the first phase of its much larger-scale Aurora powerhouse in Ohio later this year, putting it on track to bring that phase online as early as 2030, with full completion targeted by 2034.
As a result, Oklo isn't generating any revenue yet. Meanwhile, its spending will grow as it advances construction on its Ohio project. That means it's a long way from making money, making it a very risky stock.
A much lower-risk way to cash in on the nuclear resurgence
While Oklo has a lot of promise, it's a long way from delivering results. On the other hand, NextEra Energy (NYSE: NEE) is already ahead of it in capitalizing on the surge in nuclear energy demand. The utility is a leader in clean power, including nuclear. It currently operates seven units across four locations that generate more than 6 GW of reliable, emissions-free power.
Last October, NextEra signed a deal with Alphabet's (NASDAQ: GOOGL)(NASDAQ: GOOG) Google to accelerate nuclear energy deployment in the U.S. As part of that collaboration, NextEra will restart the dormant Duane Arnold Energy Center in Iowa. Google signed a 25-year deal to buy most of the power from that 615-megawatt facility when it resumes operations in the first quarter of 2029. NextEra expects the facility to contribute up to $0.16 per share in annual earnings over its first decade, a meaningful boost for a company that expects to generate $3.63 to $4.00 per share in earnings this year. The companies also expect to explore the development of new nuclear generation in the country.
Already profitable with nuclear-powered growth
Oklo is years away from turning a profit, assuming everything goes according to plan. Contrast that with NextEra Energy, which is already making money. It has visible nuclear-powered growth from Duane Arnold and its pending merger with Dominion, which will make it the country's second-largest producer. That lower risk upside exposure makes it the best nuclear stock to buy.

Oklo Is Down Over 75% From Its High. It's Still Not the Best Nuclear Stock to Buy.

Entergy Corporation ETR reported second-quarter 2026 earnings of $1.03 per share, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 94 cents by 9.6%. However, the bottom line decreased 1.9% from the year-ago quarter’s figure of $1.05.
ETR’s Total Revenues
Revenues rose 5.9% year over year to $3.52 billion but missed the consensus mark of $3.53 billion by 0.08%. Results benefited from regulatory actions, construction-related returns and higher retail demand. Industrial sales volume jumped 9.9%.

Entergy’s Segmental Performance
The Utility business generated earnings of $626 million, up from $599 million in the prior-year quarter. Earnings were $1.34 per share in both periods, as growth in total income was offset by a higher diluted share count.
The Parent & Other segment reported a loss of $143 million, wider than the $131 million loss in the prior-year quarter. The loss per share was 31 cents compared with 29 cents a year ago, primarily due to higher interest expense.
Entergy's Retail Sales Gain on Industrial Demand
Total retail electricity sales increased 4.1% year over year to 33,725 gigawatt-hours (GWh). On a weather-adjusted basis, retail sales grew 5.7%, highlighting underlying demand growth across Entergy’s service territories.
Industrial volume climbed to 17,164 GWh from 15,620 GWh. The increase reflected higher sales to data center, primary metals and chlor-alkali customers. Weather-adjusted residential demand rose 2.8%, while commercial sales increased 0.3%.
ETR Faces Higher Costs and Financing Pressure
Utility other operation and maintenance expenses reduced earnings by 8 cents per share. The decline reflected higher power delivery costs, including increased vegetation maintenance spending, along with higher compensation and benefit costs tied to health care claims and prescription drug rebate timing.
Utility interest expense lowered earnings by 11 cents per share due to higher debt balances, a higher average interest rate and carrying costs on customer advances.
Depreciation and amortization also pressured results as Entergy placed more utility assets into service. The company cited higher federal regulatory depreciation rates at Entergy Arkansas and Entergy Louisiana, along with increased nuclear depreciation rates in Louisiana.
Entergy’s Financial Highlights
As of June 30, 2026, Entergy had cash and cash equivalents of $3.85 billion compared with $1.93 billion as of Dec. 31, 2025.
Long-term debt totaled $31.55 billion compared with $27.9 billion as of Dec. 31, 2025.
Second-quarter operating cash flow increased to $1.89 billion from $1.26 billion a year earlier. The improvement reflected higher customer advance receipts, stronger utility collections and lower fuel and purchased-power payments. Vendor payment timing and higher interest payments partly offset these benefits.
Entergy Reaffirms Its Earnings Outlook
Entergy has reaffirmed its 2026 adjusted earnings guidance of $4.25-$4.45 per share. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2026 earnings is pinned at $4.40 per share, which is higher than the company’s guided range.
ETR also maintained its longer-term adjusted earnings guidance. Entergy expects $4.90-$5.20 per share in 2027, $5.55-$5.85 in 2028, $6.25-$6.55 in 2029 and $7.05-$7.35 in 2030. Management continues to target adjusted earnings growth of more than 8% annually through 2030.

CenterPoint Energy, Inc. CNP reported second-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings of 40 cents per share, which surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 37 cents by 8.1%. The bottom line increased 37.9% from the year-ago quarter’s figure of 29 cents.
CNP generated revenues of $2.15 billion, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 1.8%. The top line also came in 10.7% higher than the year-ago quarter’s reported figure of $1.94 billion.
CMS Energy Corporation CMS reported second-quarter 2026 adjusted EPS of 37 cents per share, which came in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate. However, the bottom line declined 47.9% from 71 cents in the year-ago quarter.
CMS' operating revenues totaled $1.83 billion, which missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.91 billion by 4.2%. The top line also fell 0.5% from $1.84 billion in the prior-year quarter.
NextEra Energy NEE reported second-quarter 2026 EPS of $1.15, up 9.5% from $1.05 a year ago. The figure beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.09 by 5.5%.
NEE’s total operating revenues were $7.53 billion, which rose 12.4% year over year but missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $7.99 billion by 5.8%.

Three top dividend stocks that check off all those boxes are Lowe's Companies (NYSE: LOW), NextEra Energy (NYSE: NEE), and American States Water Company (NYSE: AWR). Here's why these can be excellent stocks to build a dividend-focused portfolio around.
Lowe's
Lowe's is a top home improvement retailer whose robust business makes it an appealing long-term investment. While there may be periods of declining demand due to economic conditions, the business has considerable long-term growth opportunities ahead, driven by population growth and new home construction.
The stock currently pays a dividend that yields 2.4%, which is more than twice the S&P 500 average of 1.1%. The company has an illustrious track record of raising its payouts for more than 50 consecutive years, making it a Dividend King. And Lowe's has been generous with its rate hikes, with its current quarterly dividend of $1.25 being 56% higher than the $0.80 it was paying its shareholders five years earlier. That averages out to a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.3%, comfortably above the inflation rate.
This year, the stock is down 10%, but with a terrific business model and it trading at just 18 times its trailing earnings, it can be a solid buy right now.
NextEra Energy
Another top dividend stock is NextEra Energy, which is a leading provider of electricity in the country. Companies such as NextEra, which provide essential services, can be incredibly valuable investments because they benefit from fairly consistent demand over the years and aren't likely to experience significant volatility in their earnings. It's yielding 2.8%.
NextEra has been raising its dividend for decades (although its streak isn't nearly as long as Lowe's), making it another excellent dividend growth stock. Earlier this year, the company announced a generous 10% increase to its payout, in line with the plan it previously outlined to shareholders -- yet another example of the predictability the business offers. Over five years, NextEra has boosted its quarterly payout by roughly 62%, averaging a CAGR of 10.1%.
This year, NextEra's stock is up a solid 11% as investors increasingly seek safe-haven investments, and it's not hard to see why NextEra can be a great option. At 20 times earnings, the stock may look a bit pricey, but for the dividend income and long-term stability it offers, it can still be a good holding.
American States Water Company
The company with the most impressive streak of dividend increases is American States Water -- it's been raising its payout for an incredible 71 consecutive years. Like NextEra, it offers essential services to its customers, which have enabled it to grow steadily over time while increasing its dividend.
In the trailing 12 months, the business generated $679 million in revenue and $209 million in operating profit, for a fairly strong margin of 31%. With those kinds of strong financials, the business is in good shape to grow its profits along with its top line.
Currently, the stock yields 2.3%. And at $0.504, its quarterly dividend has increased by just over 50% in five years, from $0.335, for a CAGR of 8.5%.
As another safe-haven, the stock has rallied an impressive 22% this year. However, investors shouldn't get used to those types of returns, as in five years it's up just over 1%. Historically, this has been a low-volatility stock, with a beta of around just 0.60, indicating that it doesn't move closely with the overall market. But for long-term investors seeking a solid dividend-growth stock, American States Water can be an excellent option.

FPL is leading the charge to power large loads in Florida
Large power users, such as data centers, are turning directly to the source to meet their power needs. They're increasingly signing power purchase agreements (PPAs) with electric utilities and competitive power producers to secure future electricity.
Many data center developers are making the strategic decision to build new facilities in Florida due to its favorable business climate and FPL's ability to meet their power needs. FPL currently has about 21 gigawatts (GW) of interest from large-load customers, such as hyperscale data centers that value speed to market, reliability, and competitive power pricing. The company is in active discussions with 12 GW of capacity that it believes it could start service as soon as 2028. Few electric utilities have the scale and financial resources to support that level of near-term demand. For perspective, the five largest electric generation owners in the U.S., excluding NextEra, have between 37 and 56 GW of operational capacity, compared to NextEra's 80 GW.
NextEra's data center hub strategy can meet developers' needs
NextEra's energy resources segment is also capitalizing on surging AI data center power demand. The company is bringing its Duane Arnold nuclear power plant back online to support the surging power needs of Alphabet's (NASDAQ: GOOG)(NASDAQ: GOOGL) Google. The company expects that facility to be fully operational by early 2029. NextEra is also building new renewable energy, storage, and gas-fired power capacity to support other utilities and data center customers, including Google.
What sets NextEra Energy apart from other utilities is its data center hub strategy. Data center developers don't just need a lot of power; they require speed, certainty, and scalability, which align with NextEra's strengths. It's one of the few companies that can support these customers with a full suite of solutions, including renewables and battery storage, gas-fired generation, and potentially nuclear in the future.
The company is currently developing 30 potential data center hubs in the U.S. and anticipates that number will rise to 40 by year-end. NextEra's base case is that it will develop 15 GW of data center hubs by 2035, with an upside case of 30+ GW. An acquisition-driven boost
NextEra Energy is already a leader in the utility sector, making it a top player in the AI power race. However, it has grander ambitions. It agreed to combine with fellow utility Dominion Energy earlier this year to create the world's largest regulated electric utility business. The combined company would be the world leader in renewables and battery storage, the top U.S. player in gas generation, and the country's second-largest nuclear energy producer. It would also be a leader in total U.S. power generation and annual capital spending.
The combined company would have over 130 GW of large-load opportunities in its pipeline, more than double its current combined generation capacity (110 GW). That backlog would help support more than 9% compound annual earnings-per-share growth through 2035, with expectations of extending that pace through at least 2032. That's an acceleration from the more than 8% compound annual growth rate NextEra Energy currently expects to deliver as a stand-alone company, which is already faster than most other utilities.
The leader in AI power
NextEra Energy is the undisputed leader in AI power among utilities. It has a significant pipeline of large-load opportunities in Florida and the rest of the country. Meanwhile, it would become an even bigger player once it closes the Dominion Energy deal. Its combination of scale and growth makes it the top utility stock to buy to capitalize on the AI power boom.

NextEra Energy Is Becoming the Utility Sector's Biggest AI Power Bet -- Here Are the Numbers That Prove It

NextEra Energy, Inc. NEE used its second-quarter 2026earnings callto emphasize accelerating electricity demand, expanding large-load opportunities and improving returns across its contracted energy pipeline.
Management kept its outlook unchanged while arguing that FPL, renewables, storage, transmission, gas and nuclear capabilities create multiple paths to serve data-center customers.
NEE Keeps Growth Targets Intact
Michael Dunne, executive vice president and chief financial officer, maintained the 2026 adjusted earnings range of $3.92 to $4.02 per share and is targeting the high end.
NextEra continues to expect adjusted earnings growth of at least 8% annually through 2032, with the same target from 2032 through 2035, off a 2025 base of $3.71.
Second-quarter adjusted earnings of $1.15 per share topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.09, while revenues of $7.53 billion missed the $7.99 billion consensus mark. Adjusted earnings rose from $1.05 a year earlier.

NextEra Sees FPL Large-Load Momentum
John Ketchum, chairman, president and chief executive officer, said FPL has roughly 21 gigawatts of large-load interest and is in advanced discussions involving 12 gigawatts.
Management still expects at least one transaction under FPL’s large-load tariff by year-end. Ketchum said each gigawatt initially could represent roughly $2 billion of capital spending and earn the same return on equity as other FPL investments.
Scott Bores, FPL president and chief executive officer, told a Goldman Sachs analyst that community acceptance depends on selecting welcoming locations and transparency. He said that discipline supports FPL’s 8-gigawatt target for 2032.
NEE Expands Storage and Backlog
Ketchum highlighted 3.6 gigawatts of renewables and storage additions, including 2 gigawatts of battery storage. The Energy Resources backlog reached approximately 35.1 gigawatts.
The company also recontracted more than 500 megawatts since the prior call, lifting the year-to-date total above 1,100 megawatts. Those contracts averaged about 15 years and pricing roughly $20 per megawatt-hour above recent realized levels.
Responding to a Barclays analyst, Ketchum said recontracting and storage co-location increase asset option value. Brian Bolster, Energy Resources president and chief executive officer, said project scale and complexity are supporting returns.
NextEra Builds Data-Center Hubs
Ketchum said Energy Resources is discussing 30 potential hubs and expects the figure to reach 40 by year-end.
The strategy combines renewables for initial power, gas for firm capacity and storage for reliability. Four origination channels support a base-case goal of 15 gigawatts of new large-load generation by 2035, with an upside case of at least 30 gigawatts.
A Wolfe Research analyst questioned delays in agreements for 9.5 gigawatts of federal hub projects. Ketchum cited negotiations involving the U.S. and Japanese governments, while Bolster told Goldman Sachs that the expected startup timing has not changed.
NEE Sets Limits on Nuclear Risk
Ketchum said the Duane Arnold recommissioning remains on track for no later than the first quarter of 2029 after regulatory approval and the acquisition of the remaining minority ownership.
Asked by a JPMorgan analyst about advanced nuclear, Ketchum said such development requires risk-sharing among customers, government, equipment providers and contractors.
He said NextEra would not accept uncapped construction cost-overrun exposure. The company is evaluating 6 gigawatts of small modular reactor co-location opportunities.
NextEra Advances Dominion Combination
Ketchum said the proposed Dominion Energy combination has entered regulatory review, with shareholder meetings expected in early September and closing still expected in the second half of 2027.
The combined company is expected to support approximately 11% annual growth in regulatory capital employed through 2032 and adjusted earnings growth of at least 9% through 2032.
Ketchum told analysts that local operations would remain intact, while NextEra’s balance sheet, procurement scale and development platform would support Dominion’s service territories.
NEE Maintains an Execution Focus
Management’s tone centered on converting power demand into regulated and long-term contracted investment without changing its financial targets.
Priorities are securing large-load contracts, completing hub agreements, expanding the backlog and progressing the Dominion review while limiting construction and affordability risks.

NEE Q2 Earnings Call Highlights Power Demand Growth

NextEra Energy NEE reported second-quarter 2026 results with adjusted earnings per share of $1.15, up 9.5% from $1.05 a year ago. The figure beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.09 by 5.5%. Strong contributions from both Florida Power & Light (“FPL”) and NextEra Energy Resources allowed the company to surpass expectations.
GAAP earnings per share were $1.50 compared with 98 cents in the year-ago quarter.
Revenues
Total operating revenues were $7.53 billion, up 12.4% year over year but missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $7.99 billion by 5.8%. A key highlight was NextEra Energy Resources’ record renewables and storage origination, which added 3.6 gigawatts (“GW”) to backlog.

NEE’s Revenue Mix Reflected Strength in Both Engines
Operating revenues increased from $6.7 billion in the second quarter of 2025 to $7.53 billion, supported by gains across both major operating platforms. By segment, FPL generated $4.89 billion of operating revenues in the quarter, while NextEra Energy Resources produced $2.53 billion, with Corporate and Other adding $106 million.
Highlights of NextEra Energy's Release
FPL’s growth in the reported quarter was largely fueled by ongoing business investments. Operationally, FPL’s regulatory capital employed increased about 9.3% year over year, while the customer base expanded nearly 90,000 in the quarter.
FPL continues to witness strong demand from hyperscalers and other large customers seeking reliable, competitively priced power with quick deployment. The utility has nearly 21 GW of large-load interest, including 12 GW in advanced discussions, with some projects potentially coming online as early as 2028. FPL expects to announce at least one large-load deal under its tariff by year-end.
NextEra Energy Resources had a strong quarter for new renewables and storage origination, adding to its backlog. With the new additions, NextEra Energy Resources' backlog now totals 35.1 GW after taking into account more than 1.1 GW of new projects placed into service as of July 24, 2026.
Total operating expenses in the second quarter were $5.28 billion, up 10%, due to higher operational and maintenance expenses and higher fuel, purchased power and interchange expenses.
Financial Highlights
On the balance sheet at June 30, 2026, NextEra Energy reported cash and cash equivalents of nearly $2.86 billion and total assets of $232.8 billion.
Long-term debt stood at $98.79 billion, while total equity was $68.1 billion.
In the first six months of 2026, net cash provided by operating activities was $7.27 billion, net cash used in investing activities was $19.11 billion and net cash provided by financing activities was $12.05 billion.
The utility’s full-year growth narrative continued to center on capital deployment, with nearly $5.78 billion of capital expenditures in the first six months of the year.
NEE Guidance and Financial Position Stayed in Focus
NextEra Energy maintained the 2026 adjusted earnings per share expectation of $3.92 to $4.02 and said it is targeting the high end of that range. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2026 earnings per share is currently pegged at $4.01, which is near the top of the guidance.
In the long term, the company continues to target adjusted earnings per share growth of more than 8% annually through 2032 to 2035, using 2025 adjusted earnings of $3.71 as the base.

NextEra Energy Q2 Earnings Surpass Estimates, Revenues Miss

Pre-market activity is seeing some buying activity after Thursday’s big drop in all major indexes. We still see violence in Iran, with the U.S. dropping bombs overnight for the 13th-straight day. Iran has rejected a cease-fire agreement brought forth by neighboring Iraq. The end of this turmoil does not appear to be in sight.
Nevertheless, spot oil prices have cooled from yesterday, -3% on both WTI and Brent crude, to $89 per barrel (/bbl) and $97/bbl, respectively. The international Brent index pushing over $100 yesterday was a strong catalyst for the market selloff. Unfortunately, save any new serious peace talks, we can expect the dance at these levels to continue.
Bond yields are not fluctuating quite the same way: they’ve risen over the past week and stayed there: +4.68% on the 10-year is the highest of President Trump’s second term so far. Same with the 2-year yield, which stands at +4.33% currently. Historically, the bond yield flexes much muscle in expressing its approval, or lack thereof, of economic conditions. It pays to keep an eye on these charts.
Q2 Earnings Reports Ahead of the Open: AXP, NEE & More
American Express AXP, as per usual, outperformed earnings expectations this morning, reporting $4.53 per share versus a consensus estimate of $4.41. Revenues were breakeven at $19.64 billion in its Q2. AmEx’s high-end Platinum card became the credit card giant’s fastest growing product, depicting continued strength from the high-end consumer. That said, shares are -4% in early trading, deepening the -8% losses since the start of the year.

Revenues, however, came in well short of estimates to $7.53 billion in the quarter. Forward guidance was in line with previous Zacks consensus. Yet increased demand has set the stock in positive territory pre-market on the news.
Oilfield services major SLB Corp. SLB, formerly Schlumberger, beat earnings estimates by 4 cents to $0.55 per share this morning, with Q2 revenues of $8.97 billion outpacing forecasts by +3%, and up nicely from $8.55 billion reported in the year-ago quarter. Shares are up +4% in today’s pre-market, adding to the solid +23% gains year to date.
Verizon VZ put up mixed Q2 results this morning, beating on the bottom line by 3 cents with earnings of $1.30 per share (8 cents higher than the year-ago quarter) while revenues of $34.25 billion came up short of estimates by -3%. Post-paid phone adds was a highlight in the company’s report, and shares are up modestly in today’s pre-market, adding to the +7.6% gains year to date.
What to Expect from the Stock Market Today
After the opening bell this morning, S&P flash Services PMI for July will be released. Expectations are for a slight increase to 51.5, as the final FIFA World Cup matches saw higher demand for services in New York/New Jersey, Houston, Seattle and elsewhere. Also S&P flash Manufacturing PMI is also expected to increase half a point to 54.4. The prior month’s flash number had been revised downward fairly drastically in its final to 53.9, so these figures appear fairly active currently.
New Home Sales for June also hit the tape after today’s open. Analysts expect a rebound off lows in May not seen since the start of the year, from 580K to 606K seasonally adjusted, annualized units. It’s no secret new home sales have faced significant headwinds over the past couple years, but we look for signs of lasting improvement. The 2026 high was 664 seasonally adjusted, annualized units.

NextEra Energy (NYSE:NEE) reported its second-quarter financial results on June 24. The utility giant generated robust earnings growth, as its adjusted earnings per share surged 9.5%. The company is benefiting from strong power demand growth from AI data centers and other catalysts.

Another strong showing
NextEra Energy reported $2.4 billion, or $1.15 per share of adjusted earnings, in the second quarter, up 9.5% compared to the year-ago period. Both the utility’s businesses, FPL and Energy Resources, delivered strong results.
The company’s regulated electric utility in Florida, FPL, generated $1.4 billion in net income, up nearly 11% year over year. It continues to benefit from Florida’s economic growth, adding more than 90,000 customers over the past year. That’s driving heavy capital spending ($12 billion to $13 billion this year) to support the state's growing power demand. FPL is seeing robust demand from data center developers and other large customers.
Meanwhile, its clean energy infrastructure development platform, NextEra Energy Resources, reported earnings growth of more than 18% to about $1.3 billion. It placed 1.1 gigawatts (GW) of new projects into service over the past three months to support growing power demand from other utilities and large customers. The company also energized a new 137-mile transmission line in New Mexico to strengthen grid reliability in the state.
Powerful growth still ahead
NextEra Energy believes it will continue growing briskly for years to come. Its baseline expectation is to deliver more than 8% compound annual adjusted earnings per share growth through 2032, with a target to maintain that same growth rate from 2032 to 2035. It has multiple growth catalysts. FPL has roughly 21 GW of large-load interest from data center developers and other large power users, including 12 GW in advanced discussions that could begin delivery as soon as 2028. Meanwhile, NextEra Energy Resources has 35.1 GW in its backlog, most of which it expects to deliver by the end of the decade. It also remains on track to restart its Duane Arnold nuclear power plant by 2029 to support Google’s growing power demand and was selected to develop two large-scale transmission projects in Illinois.
While NextEra already has robust growth in its existing businesses, it aims to further enhance its strong growth profile by combining with Dominion. That $67 billion deal will create the world’s largest regulated electric utility. NextEra expects the deal will accelerate its earnings growth rate to more than 9% annually through 2032, with a target of maintaining that rate through 2035. Dominion’s electric utility in Virginia is benefiting from strong power demand growth from data centers, and the combined company would be better positioned to support it.
Is NextEra a buy?
NextEra’s robust growth has helped power its stock, which is up more than 22% over the past year. As a result, it currently trades at more than 22 times forward earnings, which is higher than its peers (19 to 21 times range) and the S&P 500 (21.5x).
However, that’s still a fairly attractive value to pay for this leading utility stock. It’s the largest player in the space and growing faster than most of its peers. It could generate double-digit average annual total returns from here by adding its growth rate to its current dividend yield (2.8%). That’s a strong return from a lower-risk investment, making NextEra still look like a compelling buy after its earnings report.
