WTI crude oil surged to a 3-week high on Wednesday after the US signaled it will maintain its naval blockade of Iran for the foreseeable future. The Wall Street Journal reported that President Trump told his aides to prepare for an extended blockade and that it carries less of a risk for the US than resuming hostilities or walking away from the conflict without securing a deal that curbs Iran’s nuclear activities.

The broader market came under pressure on Wednesday after three FOMC members dissented in favor of no easing bias in the FOMC ‘s decision to keep policy unchanged. Also, hawkish comments from Fed Chair Powell weighed on stocks, as he said a bit of monetary policy restraint is the right place to be. The 10-year T-note yield rose +6 bp to a 1-month high of 4.41%.
The Nasdaq 100 moved higher on Wednesday as technology stocks rallied on signs that demand for AI infrastructure remains strong. NXP Semiconductors NV rose +25%, and Seagate Technology Holdings Plc rose by more than +10% to lead chipmakers and AI infrastructure stocks higher after reporting stronger-than-expected earnings results. The markets are awaiting earnings from four of the Magnificent Seven technology stocks after Wednesday’s close, as Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta Platforms will report quarterly results.
Wednesday’s US housing starts and core capital goods new orders reports were better than expected, a supportive factor for stocks.
US MBA mortgage applications fell -1.6% in the week ended April 24, with the purchase mortgage sub-index up +1.2% and the refinancing sub-index down -4.4%. The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage rose by +2 bp to 6.37% from 6.35% in the prior week.
US Mar housing starts unexpectedly rose +10.8% m/m to a 15-month high of 1.502 million, stronger than expectations of a decline to 1.380 million. Mar building permits, a proxy for future construction, fell -10.8% m/m to a 7-month low of 1.372 million, weaker than expectations of 1.390 million.
US Mar capital goods new orders nondefense ex-aircraft and parts, a proxy for capital spending, rose +3.3% m/m, stronger than expectations of +0.5% m/m and the largest increase in 5.75 years.
WTI crude oil prices (CLM26) soared by more than +6% on Wednesday as the US and Iran are locked in a battle for control of the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides blocking the waterway to gain leverage during an extended ceasefire. The Strait of Hormuz remains essentially closed, threatening to deepen the global energy crisis, as flows of crude, natural gas, and oil products from the Persian Gulf have been cut off since the war began in late February. Crude prices raced to their highs on Wednesday after President Trump told Axios that he will not lift a naval blockade of Iran's ports until he secures a deal with Iran to address the country's nuclear program. The ongoing blockade could exacerbate global oil and fuel shortages, as about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transits through the strait. Goldman Sachs estimates that crude output in the Persian Gulf has been curtailed by about 14.5 million bpd, or more than 50%, so far in April, and that the current disruption has drawn down nearly 500 million bbl from global crude stockpiles, which could hit a billion bbl by June.
As expected, the FOMC kept the fed funds target rate unchanged at 3.50% to 3.75%. The vote was 8-4 in favor of the decision, with Fed Governor Miran dissenting in favor of a -25 bp rate cut. Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack, Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari, and Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan said they "supported maintaining the target range for the federal funds rate but did not support inclusion of an easing bias in the statement at this time."
The post-meeting statement said, "Developments in the Middle East are contributing to a high level of uncertainty." Also, "job gains have remained low, on average," and the jobless rate "has been little changed in recent months, while inflation "is elevated, in part reflecting the recent increase in global energy prices."
Fed Chair Powell said policymakers think the policy stance is in a very good place to wait, as inflation is kind of misbehaving, and that maybe a little bit of restriction in monetary policy is the right place to be.
Kevin Warsh won the banking confirmation vote of the Senate Banking Committee on Wednesday, putting him on track to be confirmed as Fed Chair by the full Senate before Jerome Powell’s term ends on May 15. Fed Chair Powell said after Wednesday’s FOMC meeting that he will continue to serve as Fed Governor “for a period of time to be determined.” Mr. Powell’s seat on the Board of Governors doesn’t expire until 2028.
The markets are discounting a 0% chance for a +25 bp FOMC rate cut or a rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on June 16-17.
Earnings season ramps up this week with several Magnificent Seven technology stocks reporting. Earnings results thus far have been supportive of stocks. As of Wednesday, 81% of the 220 S&P 500 companies that reported Q1 earnings have beaten estimates. Q1 S&P 500 earnings are projected to climb +12% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Stripping out the technology sector, Q1 earnings are projected to increase around +3%, the weakest in two years.
Overseas stock markets settled mixed on Wednesday. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell to a 3-week low and closed down -0.34%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +0.71%. Japan's Nikkei Stock Average did not trade, as markets in Japan were closed for the Showa Day holiday.
Interest Rates
June 10-year T-notes (ZNM6) on Wednesday closed down -16 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield rose +5.5 bp to 4.4010%. Jun T-notes fell to a 4-week low, and the 10-year T-note yield rose to a 1-month high of 4.430%. T-notes were under pressure on Thursday amid rising crude oil prices, as WTI surged more than +6% to a 32-week high, boosting inflation expectations. The 10-year breakeven inflation rate rose to 1 14.5-month high of 2.479% on Wednesday. T-notes were also pressured by stronger-than-expected US economic reports on Mar housing starts and Mar core capital goods new orders.
T-notes sank to their lows on Wednesday afternoon after three FOMC members dissented in favor of a no-easing bias in the committee’s policy decision. Also, Fed Chair Powell said a little bit of restriction in monetary policy is the right place to be.
European government bond yields moved higher on Wednesday. The 10-year German bund yield rose to a 1-month high of 3.118% and finished up +4.3 bp to 3.110%. The 10-year UK gilt yield climbed to a 1-month high of 5.078% and finished up +6.5 bp to 5.071%.
Eurozone Apr economic confidence fell -3.2 to a nearly 5.5-year low of 93.0, weaker than expectations of 95.1.
Eurozone Mar M3 money supply rose +3.2% y/y, stronger than expectations of +3.1% y/y.
Swaps are discounting a 12% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on Thursday.
US Stock Movers
NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI) closed up more than +25% to lead chipmakers and AI infrastructure stocks higher after forecasting Q2 revenue of $3.35 billion to $3.55 billion, stronger than the consensus of $3.27 billion. Intel (INTC) closed up more than +12%, and Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX) closed up +11% after forecasting Q4 adjusted EPS of $4.80 to $5.20, well above the consensus of $3.96. Also, Sandisk (SNDK) and Microchip Technology (MCHP) closed up more than +6%, and Western Digital (WDC) closed up more than +5%. In addition, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Qualcomm (QCOM) closed up more than +4%, and Micron Technology (MU) and Marvell Technology (MRVL) closed up more than +2%.
Energy producers and service providers rallied on Wednesday after WTI crude oil rose more than +6% to a 3-week high. Phillips 66 (PSX) closed up more than +5%, and APA Corp (APA) and Valero Energy (VLO) closed up more than +4%. Also, Marathon Petroleum (MPC), Occidental Petroleum (OXY), Devon Energy (DVN), and ConocoPhillips (COP) closed up more than +3%, and Diamondback Energy (FANG), Exxon Mobil (XOM), Halliburton (HAL), and Chevron (CVX) closed up more than +2%.
Airlines and cruise line operators were under pressure on Wednesday as WTI crude oil rose more than +6% to a 2-week high. Alaska Air Group (ALK) closed down more than -3%, and American Airlines Group (AAL), Southwest Airlines (LUV), and Carnival (CCL) closed down more than -2%. Also, United Airlines Holdings (UAL) andDelta Air Lines (DAL) closed down more than -1%.
Bloom Energy (BE) closed up more than +27% after boosting its full-year revenue forecast to $3.4 billion to $3.8 billion from a prior forecast of $3.1 billion to $3.3 billion, above the consensus of $3.25 billion.
Generac Holdings (GNRC) closed up more than +16% after reporting Q1 net sales of $1.06 billion, better than the consensus of $1.05 billion.
Rush Street Interactive (RSI) closed up more than +16% after forecasting full-year revenue between $1.49 billion and $1.54 billion, better than the consensus of $1.38 billion.
Visa (V) closed up more than +8% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials after reporting Q2 net revenue of $11.23 billion, stronger than the consensus of $10.74 billion.
Starbucks (SBUX) closed up more than +8% after reporting Q2 comparable sales were up +6.20%, well above the consensus of +3.65%, and raised its full-year comparable sales forecast to at least +5% from a prior view of at least +3%.
General Dynamics (GD) closed up more than +7% after reporting Q1 revenue of $13.48 billion, well above the consensus of $12.70 billion.
Teradyne (TER) closed down more than -19% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after forecasting Q2 revenue of $1.15 billion to $1.25 billion, failing to exceed the consensus of $1.20 billion meaningfully.
GE Healthcare (GEHC) closed down more than -13% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100 after cutting its full-year adjusted EPS forecast to $4.80 to $5.00 from a previous forecast of $4.95 to $5.15, weaker than the consensus of $5.06.
Robinhood Markets (HOOD) closed down more than -13% after reporting Q1 net revenue of $1.07 billion, below the consensus of $1.14 billion.
Brown-Forman (BF.B) closed down more than -10% after JPMorgan Chase downgraded the stock to underweight from neutral with a price target of $23.
CoStar Group (CSGP) closed down more than -5% after forecasting full-year revenue of $3.78 billion to $3.82 billion, the midpoint below the consensus of $3.81 billion.

Stocks Settle Mixed Ahead of Megacap Tech Earnings

Key Points
Taiwan Semiconductor and Micron are leading chip fabricators.
Nvidia and Broadcom are seeing huge demand for their processors.
Enormous sums of money have already been spent on artificial intelligence (AI) computing infrastructure, and by all projections, there's much more such spending to come. A lot of it is being spent on data centers, which house the computing units that power AI training and inference. One widely cited study by McKinsey & Company predicts the build-out will require nearly $7 trillion in capital expenditures by 2030. That estimate was published last year at this time; the real number could wind up higher.
There are several companies primed to benefit from this build-out, and four of them look like great investments now.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE: TSM) is an obvious beneficiary. It's the world's leading logic chip fabricator and has a massive client base that depends on its foundry capabilities. Two of its major clients are Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) and Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA), both of which don't actually produce any chips themselves; they design them.
Some of Nvidia's competitors are also TSMC clients, which means that Taiwan Semiconductor is one of the ultimate neutral ways to play the AI build-out. As long as there is increased AI spending, chances are quite high that TSMC will benefit from it, as it will likely be producing the chips that go inside whichever computing units happen to be the most popular at any given time.
With management guiding for a 25% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2024 to 2029, it's a solid investment pick.
Nvidia
Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) has become the largest company in the world thanks to massive demand for AI computing power, and that demand is only getting stronger. It seems odd to say that a company with a $5 trillion market cap can be nearly doubling its revenue each quarter, but Nvidia is approaching that. After decelerating last year, its revenue growth started to accelerate again last quarter.
For the first quarter, analysts expect 79% revenue growth. For Q2, that same group projects 85% growth. That showcases that Nvidia is not only thriving from the AI build-out, but also gaining ground. The massive data center build-out opportunity is just getting started, and Nvidia stock will be a top way for retail investors to capitalize on it.
Broadcom
As I alluded to above, there are other AI chip designers that utilize TSMC's services. Broadcom (NASDAQ: AVGO) is one of them, but it's approaching the market from a different angle than Nvidia. Instead of making broad-purpose computing chips and selling them to a wide array of buyers, Broadcom is partnering directly with AI hyperscalers to design custom chips that are tailored for the precise types of workloads they'll be used for. Doing that often provides better cost performance than an Nvidia GPU.
This is leading to substantial growth for Broadcom; sales from its AI semiconductor division rose by 106% to $8.4 billion last quarter. By the end of 2027, this division is expected to be producing more than $100 billion annually -- a major acceleration. Broadcom is challenging Nvidia's dominance in the AI chip market, and its stock will likely be a major winner along the way.
Micron
Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU) is both a chip designer like Nvidia and a fabricator like Taiwan Semiconductor. However, it isn't producing logic chips. Instead, it specializes in memory chips, in particular, high-bandwidth memory chips. These are incredibly important in the AI computing world, as they allow the processors to quickly access the large volumes of information they require in order to perform their computations. Demand for memory chips is so high now that Micron estimates it will only be able to meet half to two-thirds of its medium-term demand. That has allowed it and its peers to raise memory prices dramatically, which is why its earnings have soared recently.
The need for memory will grow as more computing chips are produced, which puts Micron on a similar growth trajectory to the others chip companies mentioned. This makes Micron a clear beneficiary of the AI build-out, and its stock may still have a ton of room to run.

The 2-day FOMC meeting concludes this afternoon, and the Fed kept monetary policy unchanged as expected, despite a record number of dissenting votes. The markets will look to Fed Chair Powell's post-meeting comments for guidance on the future direction of Fed policy. Today’s FOMC meeting is the last for Mr. Powell as Fed Chair, as his term expires on May 15.
Kevin Warsh now appears to be on a glide path toward Senate approval as the new Fed Chair after Senator Thom Tillis said on Sunday that he dropped his opposition to the nomination. Mr. Tillis dropped his opposition after the US Justice Department dropped its criminal investigation into the Fed’s overspending on the renovation of its building, in line with Mr. Tillis’ demand. Mr. Tillis views the investigation into Fed Chair Powell as an attempt to force the Fed to cut interest rates. The Senate Banking Committee is due to vote on Mr. Warsh’s appointment today and then send the nomination to the full Senate for a vote.
The markets are discounting a 0% chance for a +25 bp FOMC rate hike at the conclusion of today’s policy meeting. The markets are expecting the FOMC to leave policy unchanged this week as it awaits further developments in oil prices and inflation.

Also, United Airlines Holdings (UAL), American Airlines Group (AAL), Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCL), and Southwest Airlines (LUV) are down more than -1%. Bloom Energy (BE) is up more than +22% after boosting its full-year revenue forecast to $3.4 billion to $3.8 billion from a prior forecast of $3.1 billion to $3.3 billion, above the consensus of $3.25 billion.
Rush Street Interactive (RSI) is up more than +15% after forecasting full-year revenue between $1.49 billion and $1.54 billion, better than the consensus of $1.38 billion.

One of the best ways to invest in AI this year is finding companies that are benefiting from long-term trends while reaping the benefits of near-term bottlenecks. Against that backdrop, let's look at two unstoppable AI stocks to buy for 2026.
AMD: The CPU leader
An early laggard in the AI race, Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) is set to come on strongly this year due to the rise of agentic AI and inference. The company has established itself as a leader in the data center central processing unit (CPU) market, and that market is set to explode.
Rival Intel recently noted that the ratio of graphics processing units (GPUs) to CPUs was quickly tightening. For AI model training, the ratio was 8-to-1, but for inference, it shrinks to 4-to-1, and for agentic AI, it could move to 1-to-1, or even start to favor CPUs. Right now, a lack of high-performance CPUs is becoming one of the biggest AI infrastructure bottlenecks, which is also lifting prices and will be a gross margin driver for the company. Meanwhile, AMD is looking to remain at the forefront of data center CPU technology by introducing high-core CPUs specifically designed for use with agentic AI.
At the same time, the company is also well positioned with its GPUs to take some share in the inference market. Its new chips use a chiplet design that packs more high-bandwidth memory (HBM) onto its chips, making them ideal for inference. It also has signed GPU deals with OpenAI and Meta Platforms that should help drive growth this year and beyond.
Between its CPU and GPU opportunities, this is a top stock to own for 2026.
Micron: A memory winner
One of the other big bottlenecks in AI infrastructure right now is with memory, particularly HBM, which is a high-end form of DRAM (dynamic random access memory). Meanwhile, the shortage of HBM is leading to supply demand imbalances throughout the entire DRAM supply chain, leading to surging prices.
To perform optimally, GPUs and other AI chips need to be packaged with HBM to quickly offload and retrieve data. As such, as AI accelerators continue to grow, so does the need for more HBM, which is already in short supply. To make things even more complicated, HBM can require more than 3 times the wafer capacity of ordinary DRAM, making it more difficult to scale up.
One of the companies benefiting from these current industry dynamics is Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU). It is one of the big three DRAM makers, along with its Korean counterparts Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. The supply-demand environment in the DRAM market has led its revenue to skyrocket and its gross margin to balloon.
The memory market has historically been highly cyclical, with large boom-and-bust cycles. However, the DRAM market now has a powerful headwind behind it with the rise of AI, which shows no end in sight. Meanwhile, Micron and its competitors are smartly starting to sign long-term deals (three to five years) to lock in minimum HBM commitments, which should also help reduce some of the cyclicality of this business.
With a forward P/E of just 5 times fiscal 2027 estimates, the stock has plenty of upside potential this year and beyond.

Capitalizing on the AI Buildout: High-Conviction Stock Picks

The 10-year T-note yield is up +5 bp to a 4-week high of 4.40%.

The Nasdaq 100 is higher today as technology stocks climb on signs that demand for AI infrastructure remains strong. NXP Semiconductors NV and Seagate Technology Holdings Plc are up more than +14% to lead chipmakers and AI infrastructure stocks higher after reporting stronger-than-expected earnings results. The markets are awaiting earnings from four of the Magnificent Seven technology stocks after the close today, as Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta Platforms will report quarterly results.
Today’s US housing starts and core capital goods new orders reports were better than expected, a supportive factor for stocks.
US MBA mortgage applications fell -1.6% in the week ended April 24, with the purchase mortgage sub-index up +1.2% and the refinancing sub-index down -4.4%. The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage rose by +2 bp to 6.37% from 6.35% in the prior week.
US Mar housing starts unexpectedly rose +10.8% m/m to a 15-month high of 1.502 million, stronger than expectations of a decline to 1.380 million. Mar building permits, a proxy for future construction, fell -10.8% m/m to a 7-month low of 1.372 million, weaker than expectations of 1.390 million.
US Mar capital goods new orders nondefense ex-aircraft and parts, a proxy for capital spending, rose +3.3% m/m, stronger than expectations of +0.5% m/m and the largest increase in 5.75 years.
WTI crude oil prices (CLM26) are up by more than +5% today as the US and Iran are locked in a battle for control of the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides blocking the waterway to gain leverage during an extended ceasefire. The Strait of Hormuz remains essentially closed, threatening to deepen the global energy crisis, as flows of crude, natural gas, and oil products from the Persian Gulf have been cut off since the war began in late February. The ongoing blockade could exacerbate global oil and fuel shortages, as about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transits through the strait. Goldman Sachs estimates that crude output in the Persian Gulf has been curtailed by about 14.5 million bpd, or more than 50%, so far in April, and that the current disruption has drawn down nearly 500 million bbl from global crude stockpiles, which could hit a billion bbl by June.
The 2-day FOMC meeting concludes this afternoon, and the Fed is expected to keep monetary policy unchanged. The markets will look to Fed Chair Powell's post-meeting comments for guidance on the future direction of Fed policy. Today’s FOMC meeting is the last for Mr. Powell as Fed Chair, as his term expires on May 15.
Kevin Warsh now appears to be on a glide path toward Senate approval as the new Fed Chair after Senator Thom Tillis said on Sunday that he dropped his opposition to the nomination. Mr. Tillis dropped his opposition after the US Justice Department dropped its criminal investigation into the Fed’s overspending on the renovation of its building, in line with Mr. Tillis’ demand. Mr. Tillis views the investigation into Fed Chair Powell as an attempt to force the Fed to cut interest rates. The Senate Banking Committee is due to vote on Mr. Warsh’s appointment today and then send the nomination to the full Senate for a vote.
The markets are discounting a 0% chance for a +25 bp FOMC rate hike at the conclusion of today’s policy meeting. The markets are expecting the FOMC to leave policy unchanged this week as it awaits further developments in oil prices and inflation.
Earnings season ramps up this week with several Magnificent Seven technology stocks reporting. Earnings results thus far have been supportive of stocks. As of today, 80% of the 199 S&P 500 companies that reported Q1 earnings have beaten estimates. Q1 S&P 500 earnings are projected to climb +12% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Stripping out the technology sector, Q1 earnings are projected to increase around +3%, the weakest in two years.
Overseas stock markets are mixed today. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell to a 3-week low and is down -0.33%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +0.71%. Japan's Nikkei Stock Average did not trade, as markets in Japan were closed for the Showa Day holiday.

Rush Street Interactive (RSI) is up more than +15% after forecasting full-year revenue between $1.49 billion and $1.54 billion, better than the consensus of $1.38 billion.
Generac Holdings (GNRC) is up more than +14% after reporting Q1 net sales of $1.06 billion, better than the consensus of $1.05 billion.
General Dynamics (GD) is up more than +10% after reporting Q1 revenue of $13.48 billion, well above the consensus of $12.70 billion.
Visa (V) is up more than +9% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials after reporting Q2 net revenue of $11.23 billion, stronger than the consensus of $10.74 billion.
Starbucks (SBUX) is up more than +8% after reporting Q2 comparable sales were up +6.20%, well above the consensus of +3.65%, and raised its full-year comparable sales forecast to at least +5% from a prior view of at least +3%.
Teradyne (TER) is down more than -15% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after forecasting Q2 revenue of $1.15 billion to $1.25 billion, failing to exceed the consensus of $1.20 billion meaningfully.
GE Healthcare (GEHC) is down more than -13% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100 after cutting its full-year adjusted EPS forecast to $4.80 to $5.00 from a previous forecast of $4.95 to $5.15, weaker than the consensus of $5.06.
Robinhood Markets (HOOD) is down more than -13% after reporting Q1 net revenue of $1.07 billion, below the consensus of $1.14 billion.
Brown-Forman (BF.B) is down more than -10% after JPMorgan Chase downgraded the stock to underweight from neutral with a price target of $23.

Stocks Mixed Ahead of FOMC Meeting Results

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) today is down -0.19%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) is down -0.57%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) is up +0.20%. June E-mini S&P futures (ESM26) are down -0.15%, and June E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQM26) are up +0.21%.
Stock indexes are mixed today. Soaring crude oil prices are lifting inflation expectations and bond yields and are negative for stocks. WTI crude oil climbed to a 2-week high today after the US signaled it will maintain its naval blockade of Iran for the foreseeable future. The Wall Street Journal reported that President Trump told his aides to prepare for an extended blockade and that it carries less of a risk for the US than resuming hostilities or walking away from the conflict without securing a deal that curbs Iran’s nuclear activities. The 10-year T-note yield is up +5 bp to a 4-week high of 4.40%.

The Nasdaq 100 is higher today as technology stocks climb on signs that demand for AI infrastructure remains strong. NXP Semiconductors NV and Seagate Technology Holdings Plc are up more than +10% to lead chipmakers and AI infrastructure stocks higher after reporting stronger-than-expected earnings results. The markets are awaiting earnings from four of the Magnificent Seven technology stocks after the close today, as Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta Platforms will report quarterly results.
Today’s US housing starts and core capital goods new orders reports were better than expected, a supportive factor for stocks.
US MBA mortgage applications fell -1.6% in the week ended April 24, with the purchase mortgage sub-index up +1.2% and the refinancing sub-index down -4.4%. The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage rose by +2 bp to 6.37% from 6.35% in the prior week.
US Mar housing starts unexpectedly rose +10.8% m/m to a 15-month high of 1.502 million, stronger than expectations of a decline to 1.380 million. Mar building permits, a proxy for future construction, fell -10.8% m/m to a 7-month low of 1.372 million, weaker than expectations of 1.390 million.
US Mar capital goods new orders nondefense ex-aircraft and parts, a proxy for capital spending, rose +3.3% m/m, stronger than expectations of +0.5% m/m and the largest increase in 5.75 years.
WTI crude oil prices (CLM26) are up by more than +4% today as the US and Iran are locked in a battle for control of the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides blocking the waterway to gain leverage during an extended ceasefire. The Strait of Hormuz remains essentially closed, threatening to deepen the global energy crisis, as flows of crude, natural gas, and oil products from the Persian Gulf have been cut off since the war began in late February. The ongoing blockade could exacerbate global oil and fuel shortages, as about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transits through the strait. Goldman Sachs estimates that crude output in the Persian Gulf has been curtailed by about 14.5 million bpd, or more than 50%, so far in April, and that the current disruption has drawn down nearly 500 million bbl from global crude stockpiles, which could hit a billion bbl by June.
The 2-day FOMC meeting concludes this afternoon, and the Fed is expected to keep monetary policy unchanged. The markets will look to Fed Chair Powell's post-meeting comments for guidance on the future direction of Fed policy. Today’s FOMC meeting is the last for Mr. Powell as Fed Chair, as his term expires on May 15.
Kevin Warsh now appears to be on a glide path toward Senate approval as the new Fed Chair after Senator Thom Tillis said on Sunday that he dropped his opposition to the nomination. Mr. Tillis dropped his opposition after the US Justice Department dropped its criminal investigation into the Fed’s overspending on the renovation of its building, in line with Mr. Tillis’ demand. Mr. Tillis views the investigation into Fed Chair Powell as an attempt to force the Fed to cut interest rates. The Senate Banking Committee is due to vote on Mr. Warsh’s appointment today and then send the nomination to the full Senate for a vote.
The markets are discounting a 0% chance for a +25 bp FOMC rate hike at the Tue-Wed policy meeting. The markets are expecting the FOMC to leave policy unchanged this week as it awaits further developments in oil prices and inflation.
Earnings season ramps up this week with several Magnificent Seven technology stocks reporting. Earnings results thus far have been supportive of stocks. As of today, 80% of the 199 S&P 500 companies that reported Q1 earnings have beaten estimates. Q1 S&P 500 earnings are projected to climb +12% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Stripping out the technology sector, Q1 earnings are projected to increase around +3%, the weakest in two years.
Overseas stock markets are mixed today. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell to a 3-week low and is down -0.12%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +0.71%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 did not trade with markets closed in Japan for the Showa Day holiday.
Interest Rates
June 10-year T-notes (ZNM6) today are down -10 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is up +3.8 bp to 4.384%. Jun T-notes fell to a 4-week low, and the 10-year T-note yield rose to a 4-week high of 4.400%. T-notes are under pressure today amid rising crude oil prices, with WTI up more than +4% to a 2-week high, boosting inflation expectations. T-notes extended their losses, and US Mar housing starts and Mar core capital goods new orders rose more than expected, a hawkish factor for Fed policy.
European government bond yields are moving higher today. The 10-year German bund yield rose to a 2-week high of 3.093% and is up +2.0 bp to 3.087%. The 10-year UK gilt yield climbed to a 1-month high of 5.031% and is up +2.2 bp to 5.028%.
Eurozone Apr economic confidence fell -3.2 to a nearly 5.5-year low of 93.0, weaker than expectations of 95.1.
Eurozone Mar M3 money supply rose +3.2% y/y, stronger than expectations of +3.1% y/y.
Swaps are discounting an 11% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on Thursday.

Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX) is up +16% after forecasting Q4 adjusted EPS of $4.80 to $5.20, well above the consensus of $3.96. Also, Western Digital (WDC) is up more than +12%, and Sandisk (SNDK) is up more than +9%. In addition, Micron Technology (MU), Intel (INTC), and Microchip Technology (MCHP) are up more than +4%, and Marvell Technology (MRVL), Analog Devices (ADI), Qualcomm (QCOM), and Texas Instruments (TXN) are up more than +1%.

Stocks Pressured as Soaring Crude Prices Raise Inflation Concerns

Key Points
Marvell and Micron make key components for AI training and inference chips and servers.
Marvell may be picking up a new customer for its custom AI accelerators (or XPUs).
Micron's memory chip pricing is set to keep soaring through 2027.
Semiconductor stocks have been on a tear in 2026, as massive capital spending plans from hyperscalers fuel growth across the industry. Two of the top performers so far this year are Marvell Technology (NASDAQ: MRVL) and Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU). The two chipmakers' stocks are up 93% and 74%, respectively, in 2026 as of this writing.
Investors looking at the semiconductor space may be weighing these two high-flying stocks against each other. Despite the massive run-up in both stocks' prices, one stands out as a better buy right now.

The custom AI chipmaker
Marvell makes optical networking chips and custom AI accelerators, commonly known as XPUs. It designs Microsoft's Maia chips and previously designed Amazon's Trainium chips. It also works closely with the other hyperscalers, Alphabet and Meta Platforms, for networking chips. Nvidia recently invested $2 billion in Marvell, ensuring its chips are compatible with its NVLink Fusion infrastructure for high-speed interconnect.
Marvell's networking chips have attracted significant attention in recent months as the need for high-speed data transfers between GPUs and AI accelerators has grown. Management expects its acquisition of Celestial AI, which specializes in optical interconnect for AI systems, to reach a $500 million annualized revenue run rate by 2028 and $1 billion by 2029.
But investors may still be underappreciating the XPU business. Microsoft has indicated it plans to use more of its next-generation Maia chips for its internal AI training and inference. That could result in a significant increase in Marvell's order volume in fiscal 2028. Additionally, The Information recently reported that Marvell is in talks with Google to develop a custom AI accelerator as an alternative to its Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), developed by Broadcom. The talks also included a memory processor designed to work alongside Google's TPUs.
The investment from Nvidia is a further indication that the XPU business has legs, and Nvidia is looking to protect its GPU business against the competition. As such, it's no surprise that analysts expect earnings per share to climb from $3.83 this year to $7.50 two years from now. Marvell should be able to produce consistent share gains of data center server racks for years to come as it improves its networking chip capabilities and wins more sockets for its XPUs.
At a share price of $164, the stock trades for 42.5 times forward earnings, but that drops to 21.7 times earnings two years out.
The memory chipmaker
Micron is one of three major memory chipmakers benefiting from a massive supply shortage. One of the biggest bottlenecks in AI training and inference is memory, and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips packaged with GPUs and XPUs have seen increased demand as a result. But memory chipmakers, including Micron, have been slow to expand production capacity, as they don't want to oversupply the market. In the meantime, prices for memory chips have soared, as the market awaits additional capacity.
Capacity is coming. Micron plans to invest $25 billion in capital expenditures this year and at least $35 billion in 2027 to help meet the demand. Rival memory chipmakers SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics are also spending heavily. Still, new fabs take years to ramp up production, so the supply shortage will likely last through 2027.
With higher chip prices, Micron has seen its profits soar. Pricing for its DRAM chips, the building blocks for HBM, climbed about 66% sequentially last quarter. Combined with a small increase in unit shipments, DRAM revenue climbed 74% sequentially and 207% year over year. The smaller NAND segment saw prices climb even faster, leading to 82% sequential growth. Gross margin was through the roof, climbing 18 percentage points to 75%.
Micron's set to see its earnings continue climbing over the next two years as pricing remains high and it's able to produce more units. However, the memory chip business is extremely cyclical. And the production capacity the entire industry's developing to meet demand today will eventually result in oversupply. That will lead to significantly higher overhead costs as pricing falls, resulting in much worse profit margins and a crash in earnings power. So, while analysts currently expect Micron's earnings per share to climb from $57.95 this year to $101.07 in two years, it could see a huge drop in earnings in 2029 as the supply/demand equilibrium shifts.
That's why investors are only paying 8.6 times earnings for Micron. But Micron has historically only traded at a P/E between 3 and 6 at the peak of its earnings cycle. The stock currently trades for close to 5 times 2028 earnings expectations. That suggests the stock might not climb much higher from here unless the demand cycle proves much larger than analysts expect. At their current stock prices, I'd rather buy Marvell, which should be able to produce more steady earnings growth at a fair price.

Fresh off a $20-a-share drop Tuesday, shares of Micron (NASDAQ: MU) bounced back strongly Wednesday morning -- and investors can thank Seagate Technology (NASDAQ: STX) for the bump. Seagate blew past analyst forecasts last night, reporting $4.10 per share in non-GAAP earnings instead of $3.48. Sales of $3.1 billion likewise beat expectations for less than $3 billion.
Investors are exuberant, and they're buying all the computer memory stocks they can find this morning.

What Seagate's good news means for Micron
Strange as it sounds to say it, Micron stock got beat up yesterday after The Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI is spending too much money on artificial intelligence chips and the high-bandwidth memory to support them. But today, the better story is becoming clearer: "too much" spending on memory is just right for companies that sell memory -- like Micron and Seagate.
In last night's report, Seagate reported 44% year-over-year sales growth, a 12-percentage-point increase in operating profit margin to 32.1%, and GAAP earnings per share more than doubled to $3.27. Even better news for Seagate (and Micron), it turns out the market for memory is so strong right now that Seagate was able to raise its guidance:
Instead of the less than $4 a share Wall Street thought it would earn this year, Seagate now expects to earn $5 a share.
What's next for Micron stock?
Seagate CEO Dave Mosley says we're entering "a new era of structural growth as AI applications amplify data creation and support sustained storage demand." That sounds like great news for Seagate, and for Micron stock as well.
And the best reason of all to buy Micron? Seagate stock costs more than 32x forward earnings right now.
Micron still costs less than 9x.

Why Micron Stock Bounced Back Today

NXP Semiconductors N.V. NXPI posted better-than-expected results for the first quarter of 2026, supported by improving demand across its key markets and continued traction in newer growth programs. Non-GAAP earnings came in at $3.05 per share, up 16% year over year, and beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 2.46%.
Quarterly revenues were $3.18 billion, up 12% from the year-ago period, and topped the consensus mark by 1.95%. Channel inventory ended the quarter at 11 weeks, aligning with the company’s long-term target and reflecting a distribution pipeline positioned to support near-term demand.
NXPI’s End Markets Show Broad-Based Strength
Automotive remained the largest contributor, generating $1.78 billion of revenues in the quarter, up 6% year over year. Management highlighted accelerating software-defined vehicle programs, improving electrification trends, and momentum in radar and connectivity as key contributors.Industrial & IoT revenues rose to $628 million, increasing 24% year over year and landing near the high end of guidance. The company pointed to strength in factory automation, data centers and energy storage, with newer industrial processing solutions such as i.MX, RT and MCX driving a meaningful share of the segment’s growth.
Mobile revenues came in at $391 million, rising 16% year over year. Management tied the performance to continued strength in its secure mobile transactions franchise, indicating steady demand for solutions that support secure payments and authentication use cases.
Communication Infrastructure & Other revenues reached $380 million, up 21% year over year. Management cited digital networking exposure tied to data center applications and ongoing ramps of its UCODE RFID product as key drivers, pointing to improving conditions versus the prior year’s softer baseline in this segment.

NXPI Expands Profitability on Mix and Efficiency
Non-GAAP gross profit increased 14% year over year to $1.82 billion, while non-GAAP gross margin expanded 100 basis points to 57.1%, modestly above guidance on solid fall-through from higher revenues. The company also benefited from product mix improvements and front-end utilization progress.
Non-GAAP operating income soared 16% year over year to $1.05 billion. Non-GAAP operating margin expanded 120 basis points to 33.1%, underscoring disciplined execution as volumes improved.
NXPI’s Cash Generation Supports Shareholder Returns
NXP Semiconductors generated $793 million of cash flow from operations in the quarter. Net capital expenditures were $79 million, resulting in non-GAAP free cash flow of $714 million, or 22.4% of revenues.
Capital return totaled $358 million, comprising $256 million in dividends and $102 million in share repurchases. The company also repurchased an additional $32 million of shares after quarter end under a 10b5-1 program, reinforcing its ongoing commitment to return excess cash to shareholders.
NXP Semiconductors Maintains a Strong Balance Sheet
The company ended the quarter with $11.7 billion of total debt and $3.71 billion in cash, with net debt of about $8.0 billion. Management said that cash usage reflected debt repayments, joint venture investments, capital returns and capital spending, partly offset by cash generation and proceeds from the MEMS Sensors divestiture.
NXP Semiconductors completed the sale of its MEMS Sensors business during the quarter, receiving $878 million in cash proceeds at closing. The company also continued to manage its maturity profile, retiring a $500 million tranche due in March and another $750 million tranche due in June after the quarter closed.
NXP Semiconductors Expects a Stronger Second Quarter
For the second quarter of 2026, NXPI expects revenues in the range of $3.35-$3.55 billion. The midpoint of $3.45 billion implies 18% year-over-year growth and an 8% sequential increase. Non-GAAP earnings are expected to be in the $3.29-$3.72 band (midpoint $3.50). Management anticipates broader customer adoption of its products across regions and end markets during the second quarter.
Profitability is also expected to improve sequentially, with non-GAAP gross margin guided at 58% at the midpoint and operating margin projected at 34.7%. The company expects operating expenses of about $804 million, reflecting normal annual merit increases and an annual RFID licensing fee.
NXP Semiconductors Highlights Data Center Momentum
Management provided additional transparency on its data center exposure, emphasizing a focus on the control plane rather than accelerators or data-plane compute. The company said that data center-related revenues were about $200 million in 2025 and are expected to exceed $500 million in 2026, supported by a ramp-up in system cooling, power supply, board management and control-plane switching applications.
NXP Semiconductors also reiterated that its industrial-grade processing and security capabilities are differentiators for this opportunity, pointing to products such as Layerscape networking processing, i.MX processors for board management and microcontrollers in security and cooling subsystems. These, alongside continued investment in automotive and industrial processing platforms, underpin management’s view that momentum should build through the remainder of 2026.
