According to data compiled by Bloomberg Intelligence, around 83% of S&P 500 companies that have reported Q2 earnings have exceeded analysts’ profit estimates.

Stocks added to their gains on Friday afternoon when bond yields fell from early highs and moved lower. The 10-year T-note yield finished Friday down by -1 bp to 4.38%.
On the negative side, Intel closed down more than 8% to limit gains in chip stocks after reporting an unexpected Q2 loss of -10 cents a share, which was weaker than the expected 1-cent profit, and announced plans to reduce capital expenditures and cut staff by 15% by the end of the year. Also, Charter Communications closed down more than -18% after reporting Q2 EPS below consensus.
Friday’s US economic news was negative for stocks after Jun capital goods new orders nondefense ex-aircraft & parts unexpectedly fell -0.7% m/m, weaker than expectations of a +0.1% m/m increase.
The markets are awaiting President Trump’s August 1 deadline for trade deals to avoid high tariffs. Last Wednesday, Mr. Trump announced that he intends to send a tariff letter to more than 150 countries, notifying them that their tariff rates could be 10% or 15%, effective August 1. As an update, Mr. Trump late Wednesday said, “We’ll have a straight, simple tariff of anywhere between 15% and 50%,” an indication that the floor for tariffs is rising and suggesting that he would not go below 15%.
Federal funds futures prices are discounting the chances for a -25 bp rate cut at 3% at the July 29-30 FOMC meeting and 66% at the following meeting on September 16-17.
The markets this week absorbed a heavy slate of quarterly corporate earnings, with reports from about one-fifth of the companies in the S&P 500. Early results now show S&P 500 earnings are on track to rise +4.5% for the second quarter, better than the pre-season expectations of +2.8% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Around 83% of the S&P 500 companies that have reported have exceeded profit estimates.
Overseas stock markets on Friday settled lower. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed down -0.06%. China’s Shanghai Composite closed down -0.33%. Japan’s Nikkei Stock 225 closed down -0.88%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU25) Friday closed up by +5 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield fell by -1.2 bp to 4.384%. T-notes recovered from early losses on Friday and moved higher after a -1% fall in crude oil prices prompted short covering in T-notes. Also, T-notes rose after comments from President Trump eased fears that he would fire the Fed Chair when he said there was “no tension” with Powell.
T-notes on Friday initially moved lower due to negative carryover from a slide in 10-year German bunds to a 3.75-month low. Also, upcoming supply pressures are weighing on T-notes as the Treasury will auction $69 billion of 2-year T-notes and $70 billion of 5-year T-notes on Monday.
European government bond yields today are moving higher. The 10-year German bund yield rose to a 3.75-month high of 2.769% and finished up +1.6 bp to 2.718%. The 10-year UK gilt yield rose +1.4 bp to 4.635%.
Eurozone Jun M3 money supply rose +.3% y/y, weaker than expectations of +3.7% y/y and the slowest pace of increase in 9 months.
The German Jul IFO business confidence index rose +0.2 to a 14-month high of 88.6, although weaker than expectations of 89.0.
UK Jun retail sales ex-auto fuel rose +0.6% m/m, weaker than expectations of +1.2% m/m.
ECB Governing Council member Kazaks said he saw little reason to lower interest rates further unless the economy suffers a major blow, and “There is value in the ECB holding interest rates at current levels, and the time of no-brainer moves to hike or cut rates is over.”
ECB Governing Council member and Bundesbank President Nagel stated that a steady monetary policy from the ECB is appropriate, as the inflation outlook has remained unchanged and the economic outlook has improved slightly.
Swaps are discounting the chances at 18% for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at the September 11 policy meeting.

Centene (CNC) closed up more than +6% to lead managed health care providers higher after laying out a plan to address problems in its Affordable Care Act business to ensure it turns a profit in 2026. Also, Molina Healthcare (MOH) closed up more than +4%, and Humana (HUM), Elevance Health (ELV), and CVS Health (CVS) closed up more than +3%. In addition, UnitedHealth Group (UNH) closed up +0.89%.
Deckers Outdoor Corp (DECK) closed up more than +11% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q1 net sales of $964.5 million, well above the consensus of $901.4 million.
Comfort Systems USA (FIX) closed up more than +23% after reporting Q2 revenue of $2.17 billion, stronger than the consensus of $1.96 billion.
Newmont Corp (NEM) closed up more than +6% after reporting Q2 sales of $5.32 billion, better than the consensus of $4.85 billion.
Edwards Lifesciences (EW) closed up more than +5% after reporting Q2 sales of $1.53 billion, better than the consensus of $1.50 billion, and raising its full-year sales forecast to $5.9 billion-$6.1 billion from a previous estimate of $5.7 billion-$6.10 billion, stronger than the consensus of $5.91 billion.
Aon Plc (AON) closed up more than +4% after reporting Q2 adjusted EPS of $3.49, above the consensus of $3.40.

Solid Corporate Earnings Results Support Stocks

MicroStrategy MSTR, doing business as “Strategy,” shares have appreciated 131% in the trailing 12 months, outperforming both the Zacks Computer - Software industry and Zacks Computer and Technology sector that have returned 22.2% and 22.8%, respectively.
Strategy is the world’s largest bitcoin treasury company, holding 607,770 Bitcoins as of July 20, 2025. In July, Strategy acquired 6,220 Bitcoins for $739.8 million. MARA Holdings MARA, Riot Platform RIOT and Tesla TSLA are other well-known companies that hold bitcoins in their respective balance sheets. As of March 31, MARA Holdings and Riot Platforms had 47,531 and 19,223 bitcoins, respectively, while Tesla had 11,509 bitcoins at the end of the second quarter of 2025.

There are no easy answers to this key question, but one reliable measure that can help investors address this is the company's earnings outlook. Not only does this include current consensus earnings expectations for the coming quarter(s), but also how these expectations have changed lately.
Empirical research shows a strong correlation between near-term stock movements and trends in earnings estimate revisions. Investors can track such revisions by themselves or rely on a tried-and-tested rating tool like the Zacks Rank, which has an impressive track record of harnessing the power of earnings estimate revisions.
Ahead of this earnings release, the estimate revisions trend for SS&C Technologies was mixed. While the magnitude and direction of estimate revisions could change following the company's just-released earnings report, the current status translates into a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) for the stock. MicroStrategy's revenues are expected to be $112.15 million, up 0.6% from the year-ago quarter.

IGV, ADBE, MSTR, SNPS: ETF Outflow Alert

A handful of publicly traded companies, including SharpLink Gaming, have now embraced the Ethereum treasury company model.
Just like the Bitcoin treasury company model, it relies on raising money from investors to buy crypto.
It remains to be seen if a strategy created for Bitcoin will be just as successful for Ethereum.
Something very interesting is going on with Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) right now. Small, relatively unknown companies are starting to add Ether, the native coin of the Ethereum blockchain, to their balance sheets as part of a new strategy designed to lift their stock market valuations. And so far, it's working.
Case in point: during the past 30 days, shares of SharpLink Gaming (NASDAQ: SBET) are up a whopping 150% (as of July 18). SharpLink Gaming has attracted so much attention with its new crypto strategy that it's almost certain to attract other companies as well.

The Ethereum treasury company model
In a very short time, SharpLink Gaming has become the largest corporate holder of Ether coins on the planet. It now holds 280,706 coins, worth about $960 million at recent prices. To put that figure into perspective, that's more Ether than even the nonprofit Ethereum Foundation holds.
In early July, the company raised more than $400 million for its Ether war chest. After its latest buy in mid-July, it still has more than $250 million for future purchases, so it's likely that we'll be hearing more from SharpLink Gaming soon.
If this strategy sounds familiar, that's because the Ethereum treasury company model is a replica of the Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) treasury company model pioneered by Strategy (NASDAQ: MSTR), the company formerly known as MicroStrategy. The concept is very simple: Instead of using cash from operations to fund crypto purchases, you tap the capital markets for funding. Once you have this funding lined up, you go on a crypto buying spree.
All of this works as long as the price of the cryptocurrency continues to go up. We've seen this work with Bitcoin, because the price of Bitcoin -- aside from a few pullbacks here and there -- has mostly gone up during the past 24 months. The same might be said for Ethereum, which is up 7% in 2025 (as of July 18) after registering losses for much of the year. It remains to be seen if Ethereum can deliver the same type of performance as Bitcoin, which is up 30% in the same period.
The growth of Ethereum treasury companies
For now, only a handful of publicly traded companies have adopted this strategy. Two other notable examples are Bitmine Immersion Technologies (NYSEMKT: BMNR) and Bit Digital (NASDAQ: BTBT). Both announced their pivots to this model in June.
Now that the groundwork has been laid, it's easy to see how other companies could be tempted to jump in. The price of Ether is still only $3,600, which makes raising money from investors easier than raising money to buy Bitcoin at about $120,000. The lower barrier to entry is likely to be much more attractive for small-cap companies with relatively limited access to the capital markets.
Should you invest in Ethereum treasury companies?
Right now, I have mixed feelings about SharpLink Gaming, which is also a marketing partner for sports betting books and online casino operators. Just look at this chart, and you'll see why I think it's a risky gamble:
In mid-2025, the company's stock had been flatlining. Nothing it did could get its stock price up. Until, of course, it latched on to the idea of investing in Ethereum.
And I'm not very enthusiastic about Bitmine Immersion Technologies, either. Granted, it now has renowned investment strategist Tom Lee of Fundstrat as its chairman. That gives it a lot of power to reach out to investors for more capital.
But what in the world is a Bitcoin mining company doing buying Ether? It doesn't make any sense to me. We can ask the same about Bit Digital, which is now winding down its Bitcoin mining operations. How can you be an evangelist for Ethereum when your core DNA is rooted in Bitcoin?
That's why I'm starting to appreciate Strategy more and more these days. While Michael Saylor, the founder and executive chairman of the company, can be a bit over the top in his predictions, he's a strong evangelist for Bitcoin. I get the impression that, from the moment he wakes up to the moment he goes to bed, he's thinking about Bitcoin. That's the type of person I want running a crypto treasury company.
So before you invest in an Ethereum treasury company, make sure you do your due diligence. Only a small handful of them may ever turn into long-term plays worthy of your investment.

Prediction: SharpLink's Ethereum Move Is Just the Beginning

While meme coins will likely soar in value alongside Bitcoin and Ethereum, long-term investors should look elsewhere for upside.
All lights appear to be flashing green for the crypto market right now. Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) just hit a new all-time high of more than $123,000. New crypto legislation is making its way through Congress. And many are talking about "Stablecoin Summer."
In short, the stage could be set for a big year-end rally in the crypto market. Here are three cryptocurrencies that have the potential to soar during the next five months.

Of course, the obvious pick is Bitcoin. Historically, Bitcoin has always led the market higher. So if you think that the crypto market is headed higher, then you need to think about buying Bitcoin, which accounts for a whopping 62% of the total value of the crypto market.
Institutional demand for Bitcoin remains strong. Money is once again surging into the spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs). At the same time, new Bitcoin treasury companies are launching left and right. These companies, modeled after Strategy (NASDAQ: MSTR), the original Bitcoin treasury company, are amassing billions of dollars to buy Bitcoin.
Moreover, Bitcoin is getting plenty of attention from the Trump administration. In many ways, the price of Bitcoin has become a proxy for the overall health of the crypto market and the success of the Trump administration's pro-crypto policies.
During "Crypto Week," President Donald Trump specifically linked the success of crypto to his overall campaign theme of "Make America Great Again." So I'm fully expecting a new push for an enhanced Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, as well as other moves that could send Bitcoin higher in the second half of the year.
If there's any cryptocurrency that comes close to Bitcoin in terms of support from the Trump White House, it's Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH). If there is going to be a merger of traditional finance and blockchain finance, as many now expect, then Ethereum is going to be a big part of it.
Ethereum is still the go-to blockchain for decentralized finance (DeFi), where it holds a commanding 58% market share. Ethereum is also the primary blockchain for stablecoins, which have emerged as one of the hottest crypto success stories of the year. These are two areas of the crypto market that hold the highest appeal for Wall Street financial firms.
Keep in mind, though, that Ethereum is up less than 2% for the year (as of July 17). So Ethereum is much less of a slam dunk than Bitcoin. But there is one key development coming up soon that could light a fire under Ethereum, and that is the imminent passage of the Clarity Act.
The Clarity Act, which is one of the two pieces of legislation under review by Congress during "Crypto Week," provides specific guidance on how digital assets should be regulated. The thinking now is that the overall regulatory treatment will be very favorable, opening the door for institutions to offer a much broader array of crypto-related financial products. That could unlock even more demand for DeFi, thereby helping to push the price of Ethereum higher.
The one meme coin you should not buy
During any bullish cycle, crypto investors typically rotate into riskier and riskier investments, as they search for higher and higher returns. That usually means an embrace of meme coins, which are among the riskiest and most speculative cryptocurrencies out there. At the end of 2024, the same phenomenon occurred, as pro-crypto euphoria led to meme coin buying.
It's impossible to predict which meme coin will pop next, but it looks like Pudgy Penguins (CRYPTO: PENGU), the meme coin inspired by the Pudgy Penguins non-fungible token (NFT) collection, could lead the way. In the past week, Pudgy Penguins soared as much as 60%. That happened after Coinbase Global (NASDAQ: COIN) briefly changed its social media profile photo to a Pudgy Penguin. Crypto influencers and some crypto firms followed suit, showing their support for the meme coin.
I've written before about the perils of investing in dog-themed meme coins. Those warnings are even stronger for penguin-themed meme coins.
Buying priorities
If you are choosing which cryptocurrency to buy next, the clear choice is Bitcoin. If history is any guide, Bitcoin has the ability to perform well during periods of extreme market uncertainty. So, even if you are expecting market turmoil ahead due to tariffs, Bitcoin could provide a hedge. The same cannot be said for Ethereum, or any other altcoin.
There's no guarantee, of course, that Bitcoin will soar during the next few months. However, both Bernstein and Standard Chartered have recently come out with $200,000 price predictions for Bitcoin, so it definitely has the potential to double in value. If you're willing to accept the risks of investing in crypto, then Bitcoin could be a great way to turbocharge the performance of your portfolio in 2025.

Bitcoin is considered a bellwether for the industry, but this year has really diverged. This leaves investors with a difficult proposition when picking between the two: buy the asset that just went on a strong run and hit all-time highs, or the one that has underperformed and could close the gap as a value play? Bitcoin: Digital gold and a flight to safety?
Bitcoin has soared since President Donald Trump won the election back in November. Trump positioned himself as a crypto advocate during his campaign, and he's held that position since taking office, with several Trump-backed organizations delving into the crypto world with their own crypto businesses.
Trump has surrounded himself with crypto advisors and installed pro-crypto officials in his cabinet, most notably at the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission (SEC). The SEC, which was a lot tougher on crypto during former President Joe Biden's administration, has since dropped or settled many of its landmark cases against major crypto firms, while removing regulations that impeded growth.
This has opened the door for the mainstream financial world to get more involved in crypto, whether it's offering custody services, more cryptocurrencies for sale on popular brokerages, or more willingness for institutions to buy and trade crypto.
Bitcoin, as the most well-known cryptocurrency, is an obvious place to start and therefore will likely benefit from these prices. Trump also announced the creation of a U.S. Strategic Bitcoin Reserve that will hold Bitcoin already in custody by the U.S. government and look for budget-neutral ways to purchase more Bitcoin.
Bitcoin also seems to be benefiting as more investors view it as a form of digital gold and therefore a hedge against inflation, with its finite supply of a maximum of 21 million coins, of which 19.9 million have already been mined. Regular gold has ripped in recent years, as investors grow increasingly concerned about the country's finances. The U.S. government now holds more $36.5 trillion in debt and has accumulated a $1.34 trillion deficit thus far in fiscal year 2025 after running a $1.83 trillion deficit in fiscal 2024. Geopolitical uncertainty has also made gold and potentially Bitcoin more attractive.
Ethereum: Are the advantages real?
Ethereum does not offer the same digital gold proposition as Bitcoin, but investors have largely viewed it favorably. For one, the network became the go-to place for developers to build smart contracts -- agreements that self-executive when certain terms are met. Many developers have also built their own tokens like Shiba Inu on Ethereum's network.
Several years ago, many began to criticize the high energy usage of cryptocurrencies due to the proof-of-work mining consensus mechanism needed to validate and mint new blocks. Ethereum then executed a multiyear project to convert to a proof-of-stake system, in which Ethereum holders stake their tokens to have a chance to validate and mint new blocks. Through this process, investors could earn yield on their tokens being staked, leading some like Cathie Wood to suggest that Ethereum has "attributes" similar to that of U.S. Treasury bills.
However, Ethereum has long struggled with congestion issues on its network, and competitors like Solana seem to pose a rising challenge. Furthermore, Ethereum seems to have lagged this year due to some of the same challenges that tech stocks have encountered like high interest rates and geopolitical uncertainty.
On the plus side, several companies have begun deploying crypto treasury strategies for Ethereum similar to Michael Saylor's Strategy. Many like top investment strategist Tom Lee also see immense potential for the network due to the rise of stablecoins, which have become a popular topic of discussion since stablecoin issuer Circle went public earlier this year and saw its stock soar. The two largest stablecoins, Tether and USDC, are both hosted on Ethereum's network.
Which is more likely to make you a millionaire?
In my opinion, Bitcoin and Ethereum are really the only two cryptocurrencies that investors can safely buy and hold in their portfolios. Both are likely to remain somewhat volatile, and both offer strong use cases.
But if I had to pick one, I am still going to choose Bitcoin. Whether it turns out to be true or not, a sizable portion of investors believe Bitcoin is a form of digital gold and the token's resilience through market turbulence, as well as a decrease in volatility, largely supports this narrative. This makes Bitcoin unique in that it can offer a form of diversification.
Furthermore, BlackRock, the largest asset manager in the world, has said that it's OK to allocate as much as 2% of a multi-asset portfolio to Bitcoin, which could make it a more common holding in the typical portfolio. Again, I think it's perfectly fine to own Ethereum, but Bitcoin really seems like it has achieved a level of acceptance that few, if any, cryptocurrencies will be able to replicate.
