Strategy Inc’s balance sheet looks solid in terms of liquidity and capital, but the valuation remains sensitive to earnings quality and to very high revenue against the backdrop of weak multiples. Shareholders’ equity of $36.65 billion and net worth of 31.18 also support financial stability, although total liabilities remain significant. On the other hand, the quick ratio is 0.00, which suggests weak immediate liquidity and dependence on the composition of current assets. The efficiency picture is mixed: a gross margin of 68.16% looks strong and above the industry median, but ROE, ROA, ROI, and return on tangible equity in TTM are all zero, which sharply worsens capital quality in the current period. Historically in 2025, these metrics were noticeably better, so the current drop looks like deterioration rather than a stable business norm. Revenue of $124 million and gross profit of $83 million are growing relative to the beginning of 2025, but the momentum does not look strong enough to justify such expensive revenue at a P/S of 58.74. P/S remains the main source of caution: it is many times higher than the industry median and points to high market expectations that fundamentals have not yet fully confirmed. P/B of 0.88, by contrast, looks restrained and may partially offset the richness on revenue, but this signal is weakened by weak current profitability. Strategy, formerly known as MicroStrategy, has become the market’s most prominent Bitcoin treasury vehicle.
What began as an enterprise analytics software company shifted into something closer to a leveraged Bitcoin holding company, funded by a continuous stream of equity and preferred-stock issuance. The legacy software business remains — generating roughly $500 million in annual revenue — but it is now a rounding error relative to the balance sheet, which holds more than 800,000 Bitcoin.
For several years, that structure worked spectacularly. Rising Bitcoin prices lifted the balance sheet, the stock traded at a premium to net asset value, and management recycled that premium into more coin. But leverage cuts both ways, and 2026 has delivered a brutal reminder of what happens when the underlying asset turns.
With Bitcoin down roughly 46% over the past year, the machinery that once amplified gains is now amplifying losses — and the equity has fallen far harder than the asset it is meant to track. MSTR stock has declined roughly 36% year to date and about 75% over the past twelve months, nearly double Bitcoin’s decline over the same stretch. Shares recently traded near $98, hovering just above a 52-week low near $82 and a world away from the former highs above $500.
More concerning is the structural strain now visible on the balance sheet. The company carries roughly $8.17 billion in long-term debt and faces approximately $230 million in quarterly preferred dividends against only about $2.2 billion in cash. Management has responded by launching a $1.25 billion Bitcoin Monetization Program, selling roughly 3,588 Bitcoin for $216 million to fund dividends and rebuild dollar reserves. Selling the asset to pay the financing costs on the asset is a meaningful shift in posture, and not a bullish one.
The Zacks Rundown
Strategy has been a significant laggard, with shares locked in a punishing downtrend. A Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell), MSTR reflects sharply unfavorable earnings estimate revision trends.
The company is part of the Zacks Financial – Miscellaneous Services industry group, which currently ranks in the bottom 31% out of approximately 250 Zacks Ranked Industries. Stocks in the bottom half of Zacks Ranked Industries face a persistent headwind, and while individual names can outperform a weak group, the industry association tends to cap the size and durability of any rally.
Compounding matters, MSTR carries a Value Style Score of F, indicating it trades at a premium to peers on the metrics that matter. Its headline forward P/E of 1.72 looks superficially cheap, but that figure is an artifact of mark-to-market Bitcoin accounting rather than any measure of underlying business value — a trap investors should be careful not to fall into.
Cracks in the Foundation: Collapsing Estimates and Violent Misses
The estimate picture has deteriorated dramatically. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for the current year has declined a staggering 50.75% over the past month, falling to $57.47 per share. Over the past 30 days, estimates for both 2026 and 2027 have been revised downward, signaling a clearly bearish analyst posture.
The earnings themselves have been wildly unpredictable, which is its own risk. In the first quarter of 2026, Strategy reported a loss of $38.25 per share against a consensus estimate calling for a loss of $3.41 — an enormous negative surprise driven by a $14.46 billion unrealized Bitcoin markdown.
Revenues of $124.3 million also came in slightly below the consensus mark. Over the trailing four quarters, the company has surpassed consensus EPS estimates just twice. When a company’s reported earnings swing by tens of dollars per share based on an asset price nobody can forecast, the analyst community simply cannot model it — and that uncertainty is itself a reason for caution.
Technical Outlook
MSTR stock has been carving out a severe and well-defined downtrend. Notice how both the 50-day (blue line) and 200-day (red line) moving averages are sloping sharply lower, with shares trading well below them and pinned near 52-week lows.
The prolonged descent has produced a classic “death cross,” wherein the 50-day moving average crosses below the 200-day moving average — a bearish technical signal that often precedes further weakness.
Recent bounce attempts have come on fading volume and negative money flow, the hallmarks of a fragile rally rather than a genuine trend change. Shares would need to mount a serious, high-volume move to the upside and show improving earnings estimate revisions to warrant taking any long positions.
Final Thoughts
Strategy is, in effect, a leveraged bet on Bitcoin wrapped in a corporate structure that adds debt service, preferred dividends and dilution on top of the underlying volatility. And because the premium to net asset value has compressed, it no longer requires a Bitcoin decline to fall. Its own outflows and fading investor enthusiasm can do the work.
A deteriorating fundamental and technical backdrop show that this stock doesn’t deserve a spot in portfolios right now. Collapsing forward estimates will likely serve as a ceiling to any potential rallies, nurturing the stock’s downtrend, while the shift from accumulating Bitcoin to selling it in order to service the capital structure marks a genuine change in the story.
Investors who want Bitcoin exposure have cleaner, cheaper ways to obtain it. Potential investors may want to give this stock the cold shoulder, or perhaps consider including it as part of a short or hedge strategy.

Life Time Group and Strategy have been highlighted as Zacks Bull and Bear of the Day

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Tuesday closed up +0.21%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) closed up +1.03%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed down -0.98%. September E-mini S&P futures (ESU26) rose +0.24%, and September E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQU26) fell -0.88%.
Stock indexes settled mixed on Tuesday, with the Dow Jones Industrials climbing to a 1.5-week high and the Nasdaq 100 falling to a 2.75-month low. Better-than-expected earnings from Boeing, Coca-Cola and Sherwin-Williams were supportive of stocks on Tuesday. Also, software stocks rose as investors rotated into sectors that had recently underperformed.

However, the Nasdaq 100 was under pressure amid a deepening rout in chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks, driven by fresh concerns over artificial intelligence spending and rising competition from China. Also, the unexpected decline in US July consumer confidence weighed on market sentiment on Tuesday.
Lower crude oil prices have also eased inflation concerns and pushed bond yields lower, supporting stocks. Sep WTI crude oil prices (CLU26) fell by more than -4% on Tuesday to a 1-week low, as the US and Iran extended their pause in hostilities. The focus is now on talks between Iran and Oman over reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The 10-year T-note yield fell -5 bp to 4.60%.
However, tensions remain high in the Middle East as the US maintains its blockade of Iranian oil shipments in the Persian Gulf. Also, President Trump on Tuesday said that the US would “take out” Pickaxe Mountain, an Iranian facility that the US and Israel said they suspect is a nuclear site, if there wasn’t a deal. In addition, Houthi militants said they would continue striking Saudi Arabia after claiming to have struck facilities linked to Saudi Aramco in the Red Sea port towns of Jizan and Yanbu on Saturday. Yanbu, the western end of the East-West pipeline, has become Saudi Arabia’s key crude export outlet since the Strait of Hormuz has been effectively shut off by the war.
The US May S&P composite-20 home price index rose +1.6% y/y, stronger than expectations of +1.3% y/y and the largest increase in 10 months.
The Conference Board US Jul consumer confidence index unexpectedly fell by -1.4 to 90.8, weaker than expectations of an increase to 92.4.
The US Jul Richmond Fed manufacturing survey rose +1 to 5, weaker than expectations of 6.
The outlook for strong Q2 earnings, which continue this week, is a bullish factor for stocks. The markets are awaiting results from a raft of megacap technology companies this week, including Microsoft and Meta Platforms on Wednesday, and Amazon.com and Apple on Thursday. Forecasts compiled by Bloomberg Intelligence suggest Q2 earnings may increase by +23%, close to Q1’s blowout earnings of +30%, which was more than double the +12% analysts had expected. AI spending is expected to account for most of earnings, with AI infrastructure stocks set to contribute nearly 60% of the S&P 500's earnings-per-share growth in Q2. So far, earnings results have been positive, with 86% of the 170 S&P 500 companies that have reported Q2 earnings beating estimates, according to Bloomberg data.
The markets are discounting a 30% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the Tue/Wed FOMC meeting.
Overseas stock markets settled mixed on Tuesday. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed up +0.12%. China's Shanghai Composite closed down -1.16%. Japan's Nikkei-225 Stock Average fell to a 2-month low and closed down sharply by -3.95%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU6) on Tuesday closed up +7.5 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield fell -4.9 bp to 4.600%. T-notes pushed higher on Tuesday as a -4% plunge in crude oil prices eased inflation expectations. The 10-year breakeven inflation rate fell to a 1-month low of 2.192% on Tuesday. T-notes also rose after US July consumer confidence unexpectedly declined. Solid demand for the Treasury’s $44 billion auction of 7-year T-notes was bullish for T-note prices, as the auction had a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.49, better than the 10-auction average of 2.47.
European government bond yields moved lower on Tuesday. The 10-year German bund yield fell to a 2-week low of 3.103% and finished down -2.9 bp to 3.104%. The 10-year UK gilt yield slid to a 1-week low of 4.944% and finished down -5.2 bp to 4.944%.
The France Jul consumer confidence survey rose +2 to a 4-month high of 86, stronger than expectations of 85.
The markets are discounting an 86% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on September 10.
US Stock Movers
Software stocks rallied on Tuesday, a supportive factor for the overall market. Workday (WDAY) closed up more than +8% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100, and Thomson Reuters (TRI) and Autodesk (ADSK) closed up more than +5%. Also, Adobe (ADBE), ServiceNow (NOW), Salesforce (CRM), and Atlassian (TEAM) closed up more than +4%, and Intuit (INTU) closed up more than +3%. In addition, Microsoft (MSFT) and Cadence Design Systems (CDNS) closed up more than +1%.
Chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks retreated on Tuesday, weighing on the Nasdaq 100. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) dropped to a 2.5-month low and closed down more than -4%. Sandisk (SNDK) closed down more than -14% to lead losers in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100, and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), ARM Holdings Plc (ARM), Micron Technology (MU) and Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX) closed down more than -8%. Also, Applied Materials (AMAT), Marvell Technology (MRVL), and Lam Research (LRCX) closed down more than -7%, and KLA Corp (KLAC) and Western Digital (WDC) closed down more than -6%. In addition, Intel (INTC) closed down more than -5%, and Qualcomm (QCOM) closed down more than -4%.
Cryptocurrency-exposed stocks moved lower on Tuesday after Bitcoin (^BTCUSD) fell more than -1% to a 1-week low. Nucor (NUE) closed up more than +7% after reporting Q2 net sales of $10.40 billion, above the consensus of $10.03 billion.
Coca-Cola (KO) closed up +5% after raising its full-year comparable EPS forecast to +9% to +10% from a previous view of +8% to +9%.
Boeing (BA) closed up more than +4% after reporting Q2 revenue of $24.56 billion, stronger than the consensus of $24.26 billion.
Amkor Technology (AMKR) closed down more than -24% after forecasting Q3 net sales of $1.95 billion to $2.05 billion, weaker than the consensus of $2.11 billion.
Corning (GLW) closed down more than -12% after forecasting Q3 core sales of $4.9 billion to $5.0 billion, the midpoint below the consensus of $5.0 billion.
Noble Corp. (NE) closed down more than -9% after cutting its full-year adjusted Ebitda estimate to $850 million to $925 million from a previous forecast of $940 million to $1.02 billion, below the consensus of $970.3 million.

Stocks Settle Mostly Higher on Positive Earnings Results

Lower crude oil prices have also eased inflation concerns and are pushing bond yields lower, supporting stocks. Sep WTI crude oil prices (CLU26) are down by more than -1% today to a 1-week low, as the US and Iran extended their pause in hostilities. The focus is now on talks between Iran and Oman over reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The 10-year T-note yield is down -4 bp to 4.61%.
However, tensions remain high in the Middle East as the US maintains its blockade of Iranian oil shipments in the Persian Gulf and President Trump raised the possibility of intensified action against Iran. Also, Houthi militants in Yemen claimed to have struck facilities linked to Saudi Aramco in the Red Sea port towns of Jizan and Yanbu on Saturday. Yanbu, the western end of the East-West pipeline, has become Saudi’s key crude export outlet since the Strait of Hormuz has effectively been shut off by the war. Jizan is home to a refinery and export terminal along the Red Sea.
The US May S&P composite-20 home price index rose +1.6% y/y, stronger than expectations of +1.3% y/y and the largest increase in 10 months.
The Conference Board US Jul consumer confidence index unexpectedly fell by -1.4 to 90.8, weaker than expectations of an increase to 92.4.
The US Jul Richmond Fed manufacturing survey rose +1 to 5, weaker than expectations of 6.
The outlook for strong Q2 earnings, which continue this week, is a bullish factor for stocks. The markets are waiting for results from a raft of megacap technology companies this week, including Amazon.com, Meta Platforms, and Microsoft. Forecasts compiled by Bloomberg Intelligence suggest Q2 earnings may increase by +23%, close to Q1’s blowout earnings of +30%, which was more than double the +12% analysts had expected. AI spending is expected to account for most of earnings, with AI infrastructure stocks set to contribute nearly 60% of the S&P 500's earnings-per-share growth in Q2. So far, earnings results have been positive, with 86% of the 145 S&P 500 companies that have reported Q2 earnings beating estimates, according to Bloomberg data.
The markets are discounting a 30% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the Tue/Wed FOMC meeting.
Overseas stock markets are lower today. The Euro Stoxx 50 is down -0.06%. China's Shanghai Composite closed down -1.16%. Japan's Nikkei-225 Stock Average fell to a 2-month low and closed down sharply by -3.95%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU6) today are up +6 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is down -3.4 bp to 4.614%. T-notes are climbing today as a -1% fall in crude oil prices eases inflation expectations. The 10-year breakeven inflation rate fell to a 1-month low of 2.192% today. Also, short covering ahead of the 2-day FOMC meeting that begins today is supporting T-note prices. T-notes raced to their highs today after US July consumer confidence unexpectedly declined. Supply pressures are limiting gains in T-notes as the Treasury will auction $44 billion of 7-year T-notes later today.
European government bond yields are moving lower today. The 10-year German bund yield fell to a 2-week low of 3.106% and is down -0.7 bp to 3.126%. The 10-year UK gilt yield slid to a 1-week low of 4.945% and is down -2.9 bp to 4.968%.
The France Jul consumer confidence survey rose +2 to a 4-month high of 86, stronger than expectations of 85.
The markets are discounting an 88% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on September 10.

Stocks Mixed on Earnings Results and Weakness in Chipmakers

The stocks listed here have declined between 36% and 53% this year.
Intuit and AppLovin have been crashing due to fears that artificial intelligence (AI) will disrupt their businesses.
Strategy has been on an epic crash over the past 12 months as falling crypto prices have weighed on investor sentiment.
If you're looking for top growth stocks to buy, the Nasdaq is home to plenty of them. And within the Nasdaq-100 index, you'll find a list of the 100 most valuable, non-financial stocks on the exchange. When stocks on that list go on sale, it can create some attractive buying opportunities in the process.
The three worst-performing stocks on the index as of Monday's close were Intuit (NASDAQ: INTU), AppLovin (NASDAQ: APP), and Strategy (NASDAQ: MSTR). Here's a look at whether these stocks are good buys right now, or if they could be heading even lower.

Intuit
Down around 53% this year, software company Intuit has been the worst buy on the Nasdaq-100 thus far in 2026. And its decline has been going on even longer than that, with its losses over the past 12 months totaling 61%. The market has been bearish on software stocks in general, due to the risk artificial intelligence (AI) poses for many of them. Intuit is known for its financial software, including QuickBooks, Credit Karma, and TurboTax.
As someone who has done accounting work for more than a decade, I firmly believe the market is making a huge mistake with Intuit. QuickBooks was one of the first software titles I used as an accountant, and that's not something AI is going to easily replace. The one thing companies need in accounting and finance is trust. Trust in the numbers and the financial statements. Think of how disastrous it can be for a company to announce that it has to restate financials because it made a mistake. AI replacing financial software may sound good in theory, but in practice, it'll likely be a much different story.
Intuit's customers don't appear to be willing to take a chance with AI, as the company's sales rose by a solid 10% last quarter (which ended on April 30) and it even announced it would be raising its full-year guidance for the current fiscal year. At a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple of just 11 times (based on analyst projections), the stock is a steal of a deal.
AppLovin
AppLovin's stock is down big, but not as massively as Intuit's. Its shares are down 38% this year. A big part of the reason it's not doing as badly is that its growth rate has remained impressive; AppLovin reported 59% revenue growth during the first three months of the year, with sales rising to $1.8 billion. Net income of $1.2 billion also doubled.
The company's business helps brands and businesses monetize their apps. While it's been doing exceptionally well of late, it's still not all that big, and the challenge may be in continuing to grow at a fast rate; many AI-powered tools could make it easier for other tech companies to compete in the space.
Currently, AppLovin's stock trades at a forward P/E of 26, which isn't all that cheap for a company that may be facing some headwinds in the future. However, this was a much more egregiously valued stock in the past. While AppLovin isn't doing poorly, I'd still hold off on buying the stock as its valuation doesn't offer much margin of safety.
Strategy
Doing only slightly better than AppLovin this year is Strategy, whose stock has declined by 36%. Its decline would likely have been even more significant if not for its crash last year, as shares of Strategy are down a whopping 76% in 12 months.
The company, whose business centers on buying Bitcoin, hasn't been nearly as popular with retail investors as it was in the past. Not only has the leading cryptocurrency been declining, but Strategy has also abandoned its stance of never selling Bitcoin, doing so multiple times in the past month.
Strategy is a stock that can easily fall for lower in value, given that this a company that doesn't offer much outside of a way to bet on Bitcoin. Its earnings are volatile and hinge largely on how the cryptocurrency does, thus, even if its valuation looks cheap, that can change quickly. This stock just isn't worth the risk.

The revenue trends for Nebius and Strategy reveal the staggering difference between the former’s focus on infrastructure for the hot artificial intelligence sector against the latter’s dedication to Bitcoin.
Strategy’s sales are a relic of its roots as a data analytics software company. Even so, it achieved a solid 12% year-over-year increase in revenue during the first quarter. Yet these days, Strategy exists primarily as the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin. It exited Q1 with over 818,000 Bitcoin holdings, representing about 4% of the world’s supply.
As a result, Strategy’s fortunes are tied to the cryptocurrency. With Bitcoin’s value declining in 2026, Strategy’s stock has fallen a whopping 77% over the trailing 12 months through July 24.
As its revenue trend shows, Nebius has grown into an AI powerhouse. Its Q1 revenue of $399 million represents an impressive 684% year-over-year jump.
The company provides data center infrastructure to customers seeking AI computing power, but has been careful about relying too heavily on debt to fund its data center expansion. Its cautious fiscal approach combined with outstanding sales growth propelled its stock to more than a 250% share price increase in the past 12 months through July 24.

Nebius vs. Strategy: Comparing Revenue Trends Between an Artificial Intelligence Company and a Bitcoin Giant

Ark thinks six potential catalysts will fuel the rally, but the most important one isn't quite working as expected.
Despite a 47% decline from its peak, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) still has a market capitalization of $1.3 trillion, making it the world's largest cryptocurrency. But Ark Investment Management, which was founded by seasoned technology investor Cathie Wood, thinks it could amass a market cap of $16 trillion by 2030, which is higher than the current value of Nvidia, Apple, and Alphabet combined.
Based on Bitcoin's circulating supply of 20 million coins, Ark's forecast would translate to a price of almost $800,000 per coin, representing a whopping 1,125% gain from its price of $65,300 as I write this. But is that target realistic?

Ark's six catalysts for potential upside
Ark publishes a fresh edition of its "Big Ideas" report each year, which highlights areas of the technology industry where the firm sees value. In the 2026 report, it outlined six core reasons for its 2030 Bitcoin target:
Institutional investment: Ark predicts global fund managers will eventually park around 2.5% of their $200 trillion in managed assets in Bitcoin.
Digital gold: Ark thinks Bitcoin could capture around 40% of gold's $28 trillion market cap as investors look for an alternative to the shiny yellow metal.
Emerging-market safe haven: Ark believes citizens in developing countries will increasingly turn to Bitcoin to hedge against economic and political instability.
Nation-state treasury: The U.S. established a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve in 2025, so it will hold the cryptocurrency the same way it holds gold and other assets. Ark thinks other countries will follow suit.
Corporate treasury: Some companies have added Bitcoin to their balance sheets to hedge against economic uncertainty. Elon Musk's Space Exploration Technologies is a moderate example, whereas Michael Saylor's Strategy is an extreme example.
Bitcoin on-chain financial services: Ark believes the Bitcoin network will be increasingly popular for making peer-to-peer transactions, bypassing traditional payment systems.
The institutional investment and digital gold catalysts account for $14.8 trillion of Ark's 2030 market cap forecast of $16 trillion for Bitcoin. The firm actually increased the size of the potential digital gold opportunity in the 2026 "Big Ideas" report because gold soared in value during 2025.
But the 2026 update wasn't all good news. Ark reduced the size of the emerging-market safe-haven opportunity compared to last year's edition of the report, because Bitcoin alternatives like stablecoins are experiencing high adoption rates. Stablecoins are usually priced in U.S. dollars and experience very little volatility, making them attractive to citizens in developing countries where there is economic instability.
Ark's 2030 forecast might be too ambitious
A potential 1,125% return by 2030 certainly sounds appealing, but a $16 trillion market cap might be a bridge too far for Bitcoin. As I mentioned earlier, the cryptocurrency would be worth more than the current value of America's three largest companies combined. But $16 trillion is also equivalent to half the output of the entire U.S. economy, which was $30.7 trillion last year.
There is also an issue with one of Ark's primary catalysts. While many investors do consider Bitcoin a digital alternative to gold, it hasn't performed like one. Actual gold soared by 64% during 2025 as investors sought a safe-haven asset to hedge against heightened political and economic uncertainty triggered by soaring U.S. government debt and the Trump administration's widespread tariffs.
Bitcoin, however, declined by 5% last year, so investors neglected the cryptocurrency and flocked to gold for protection in crunch time.
If Bitcoin can't amass the equivalent of 40% of gold's market cap by 2030, it will have to find roughly $9.8 trillion in value from somewhere else to meet Ark's $16 trillion forecast. None of the other five catalysts outlined by Ark can even come close to filling that gap, even based on the firm's most bullish scenarios.
As a result, while Bitcoin could deliver some upside in the long run, I think the odds of it soaring to around $800,000 per coin by 2030 are very low.

Despite the disappointing price action, the business continues to advance its efforts to integrate the leading cryptocurrency into the traditional financial services industry, further legitimizing the digital asset.
On July 13, Strategy unveiled the Bitcoin Banking Adoption Index. Here's what it might mean for Strategy shares.
Introducing a new industry benchmark
The Bitcoin Banking Adoption Index is a scorecard that ranks 25 financial institutions based on how extensively they have adopted Bitcoin in their operations. Categories include trading and custody, products, margin, and leadership. Fidelity sits atop the list, with a 71% index score. Royal Bank of Canada is last, with a 13% index score. Overall, the group has a 32% rating.
On the one hand, the combined score is encouraging. It shows that well-known financial institutions are building capabilities with Bitcoin.
On the other hand, there is still a lot of work to do to get the score higher. These banking entities likely need to see tangible results, such as new customer sign-ups and higher revenue potential, before investing additional resources in Bitcoin initiatives.
Strategy is positioned as a leader in this new arena
It's impossible to know exactly what the creation of the Bitcoin Banking Adoption Index will mean for Strategy shares. But it's clear that investors hope this is the start of a major bull run. It's been difficult to watch the stock fall 79% from a record high of $473.83 in November 2024 to around $100 per share.
What this might do, however, is further solidify Strategy as the leading innovator and authority when it comes to Bitcoin integration. And it positions the business as the pioneer for establishing benchmarks and ratings that move this niche forward. Financial institutions that want to improve their index scores could even consult Strategy on best practices.
Billionaire Michael Saylor has transformed Strategy into a Bitcoin capital markets enterprise, with a suite of preferred equity and convertible debt offerings that provide different classes of investors with unique exposure to the most dominant cryptocurrency. Now that it has introduced the Bitcoin Banking Adoption Index, the company aims to boost its credibility in traditional finance.

Michael Saylor's Strategy Just Unveiled a New Bitcoin Banking Index. Here's What That Signals for MSTR Stock.

That's not necessarily a bad thing.
However, it does expose a flaw in Strategy's business model.
Strategy (NASDAQ: MSTR) was a huge winner from 2024 through 2025 as it aggressively issued stock and debt to fund Bitcoin purchases. As Bitcoin's price continued to rise, Strategy's massive stockpile soared in value, allowing the company to easily raise more capital, creating a powerful cycle that amassed an enormous Bitcoin stockpile.
Things have changed, though. Bitcoin's price has fallen nearly halfway from its peak last year, and Strategy hasn't been buying the dip lately. Strategy's latest 8-K filing shows that it hasn't purchased any Bitcoin for four consecutive weeks. Instead, it is selling stock to raise funds, increasing its cash reserves to $3.2 billion.

Should investors be concerned about buying Strategy stock amid the company's sudden pivot? Here's what you need to know.
Fortifying the balance sheet isn't a bad thing
Bitcoin is infamously volatile, so a steep decline was probably only a matter of time. It's one thing for an individual investor to buy into a dip, but Strategy is an enormous company with billions of dollars of assets. Opportunistic buying would be nice, but Strategy is focusing on strengthening its balance sheet and preparing for a scenario where Bitcoin continues to decline.
Strategy has 843,775 BTC at an average cost of $75,476 per token. That means that the company is currently sitting on paper losses. It has cash obligations in the form of interest payments on its debt and dividends paid out to preferred shares. Nobody can predict prices, so there's no telling how much lower Bitcoin might go or when it rebounds, or if it ever does.
Holding more cash provides a safety buffer from nightmare situations, such as having to sell at a loss to meet its obligations.
But it does expose a flaw in Strategy's business model
Strategy's recent pause in buying Bitcoin makes sense, but it raises some concerns. As a Bitcoin treasury, Strategy could maximize value for shareholders by accumulating Bitcoin at the lowest possible cost basis. If Strategy's playbook of raising money and buying Bitcoin only works when prices go up, that's a potential red flag.
In that case, it's fair to wonder what value Strategy's current business model can generate, other than functioning as a leveraged bet on rising Bitcoin prices. Remember, Strategy primarily issues debt and stock to fund BTC purchases. Issuing stock dilutes existing shareholders, and doesn't work nearly as well at lower share prices because it takes more shares and dilution to raise the same amount of capital.
Strategy is smart to fortify its balance sheet, but a prolonged decline in Bitcoin is still a massive threat to the business. At the end of the day, investors might be better off owning Bitcoin themselves or investing in a spot Bitcoin ETF.

Strategy Has Now Gone 4 Weeks Without Buying Bitcoin. Should Investors Be Concerned?

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Tuesday closed up +0.89%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) closed up +0.74%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed up +1.93%. September E-mini S&P futures (ESU26) rose +0.81%, and September E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQU26) rose +1.82%.
Stock indexes settled higher on Tuesday as a rebound in chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks gathered steam. The recent selloff in chipmakers has cheapened valuations, enticing dip buyers ahead of earnings results of megacap technology stocks this week, beginning with Alphabet and Tesla on Wednesday. On the downside, software stocks were weak on Tuesday after Morgan Stanley downgraded several in the sector. Also, rising crude oil prices pushed bond yields higher, with the 10-year T-note yield climbing to a 2-month high of 4.64% on Tuesday.

A positive start to earnings season is also supporting stock gains. 91% of the S&P 500 companies reporting Q2 earnings results thus far have beaten estimates, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
WTI crude oil (CLQ26) rose more than +2% on Tuesday to a 5-week high as the US and Iran exchanged strikes for a 10th consecutive day even as mediators sought to revive a truce. The US targeted military command centers, launch sites, and air defenses in Iran today. Meanwhile, Iran attacked US military sites in Kuwait and Jordan. The UK navy also reported Iran struck two vessels around the Strait of Hormuz. President Trump said on Tuesday that the US has “no interest” in meeting with Iran until they are ready for serious peace negotiations.
Also, Houthi rebels on Monday said they will impose a maritime blockade on Saudi Arabia in retaliation for what they say is the kingdom's siege on the Yemeni capital, a potential threat to Saudi Arabian crude exports through the Red Sea. President Trump said Tuesday that if there is a blockade in the Red Sea, the US “will take care of it.”
The outlook for strong Q2 earnings, which begin in earnest this week, is a bullish factor for stocks. Forecasts compiled by Bloomberg Intelligence suggest Q2 earnings may increase by +23%, close to Q1’s blowout earnings of +30%, which was more than double the +12% analysts had expected. AI spending is expected to account for most of earnings, with AI infrastructure stocks set to contribute nearly 60% of the S&P 500's earnings-per-share growth in Q2.
The markets are discounting a 24% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on July 28-29.
Overseas stock markets settled higher on Tuesday. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed up +0.94%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +1.79%. Japan's Nikkei-225 Stock Average closed up sharply by +3.26%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU6) on Tuesday closed down -7 ticks, and the 10-year T-note yield rose +4.0 bp at 4.632%. Sep T-notes fell to a 1-week low, and the 10-year T-note yield climbed to a 2-month high of 4.638%. WTI crude oil prices jumped more than +2% to a 5-week high on Tuesday, boosting inflation expectations, a hawkish factor for Fed policy. The German Jul ZEW survey expectations of economic growth rose +15.8 to a 5-month high of 26.3, stronger than expectations of 15.3.
Swaps are discounting a 4% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on Thursday.
US Stock Movers
Chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks rallied sharply on Tuesday, supporting gains in the overall market. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) closed up more than +5%. Sandisk (SNDK) closed up more than +14% to lead gainers in the S&P 500, and Teradyne (TER), Western Digital (WDC), and Micron Technology (MU) closed up more than +12%. Also, Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX) closed up more than +11%, and Intel (INTC) closed up more than +9%. In addition, Applied Materials (AMAT), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) closed up more than +7%, and Marvell Technology (MRVL) closed up more than +6%. Finally, Lam Research (LRCX) and KLA Corp (KLAC) closed up more than +5%, and ASML Holding NV (ASML), Microchip Technology (MCHP), and Texas Instruments (TXN) closed up more than +3%.
Cryptocurrency-exposed stocks moved higher on Tuesday as Bitcoin (^BTCUSD) rose more than +1% to a 5-week high. Coinbase Global (COIN) closed up more than +9%, and Circle Internet Group (CRCL) and Riot Platforms (RIOT) closed up more than +8%. Also, Galaxy Digital Holdings (GLXY) closed up more than +7%, and Strategy (MSTR) and MARA Holdings (MARA) closed up more than +4%.
Software stocks were under pressure on Tuesday after Morgan Stanley downgraded Adobe, Intuit, and Workday. Atlassian Corp (TEAM) closed down more than -5%, and Thomson Reuters (TRI) closed down more than -4% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100. Also, Workday (WDAY) closed down more than -4%, and Adobe Systems (ADBE), Datadog (DDOG), and Autodesk (ADSK) closed down more than -3%. In addition, ServiceNow (NOW) and Salesforce (CRM) closed down more than -2%.
Nebius Group NV (NBIS) closed up more than +18% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100 after Nvidia reported a 9.3% stake in the company in a 13G filing.
Hasbro (HAS) closed up more than +8% after reporting Q2 net revenue of $1.14 billion, better than the consensus of $1.07 billion, and boosting its full-year adjusted Ebitda forecast to $1.45 billion to $1.50 billion from a previous forecast of $1.40 billion to $1.45 billion, stronger than the consensus of $1.45 billion.
3M Co (MMM) closed up more than +7% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials after reporting Q1 adjusted EPS of $2.40, stronger than the consensus of $2.25, and raising its full-year adjusted EPS forecast to $8.80 to $8.95 from a previous forecast of $8.50 to $8.70.
Robinhood Markets (HOOD) closed up more than +7% after Bernstein and Piper Sandler said the company’s revenue from prediction markets is set to overshadow that from cryptocurrency trading as soon as Q2.
General Motors (GM) closed up more than +5% after reporting Q2 net sales of $48.03 billion, stronger than the consensus of $46.61 billion, and raising its full-year adjusted EPS forecast to $12 to $14 from a previous estimate of $11.50 to $13.50, the midpoint above the consensus of $12.81.
Ralph Lauren (RL) closed up more than +2% after Raymond James upgraded the stock to outperform from market perform with a price target of $410.
Danaher (DHR) closed down more than -10% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after forecasting Q3 non-GAAP core revenue growth of 2.0% to 3.0%, weaker than the consensus of 3.61%.
MSCI Inc (MSCI) closed down more than -10% after reporting Q2 adjusted EPS of $4.94, below the consensus of $4.99, and boosting its full-year operating expenses estimate to $1.54 billion to $1.58 billion from a previous estimate of $1.49 billion to $1.53 billion.
Agios Pharmaceuticals (AGIO) closed down more than -6% after announcing it will not advance the development of tebapivat for sickle cell disease following Phase 2 trial results that failed to establish a differentiated profile versus placebo.
Halliburton (HAL) closed down more than -5% after reporting Q2 adjusted operating income of $683 million, weaker than the consensus of $688.7 million.
