Noteworthy Wednesday Option Activity: MDB, CRM, AXP

Funds that track the Nasdaq-100 must buy shares of any new additions.
Investors have wondered if this movement actually translates into significant gains.
Joining the Nasdaq-100 represents a big milestone, as it includes the biggest non-financial companies on the Nasdaq. The idea is, once a company joins, it may see its share price advance as managers of funds tracking this index buy shares -- since their funds must mimic the index's performance, they have to make these additions.
The Nasdaq-100 rebalances annually to remove certain members and add new ones, and it also may add members at other points in the year. And this brings me to the reason why the Nasdaq-100 has drawn attention in recent times. The index adjusted its admission rules to allow companies in sooner after their market launches than ever before -- and that resulted in Space Exploration Technologies (NASDAQ: SPCX) joining the Nasdaq-100 earlier this month.

So now, with SpaceX newly in the index, investors may be wondering: What happens to stocks after joining the benchmark? History has a clear answer.
An Elon Musk-led company
So, first, a note about SpaceX. The company, a giant in rocket launches, satellite-based connectivity, and artificial intelligence (AI), has drawn great attention from investors due to this dynamic mix of businesses. And some investors also like the idea of being involved in a business led by Elon Musk. Also at the helm of electric vehicle giant Tesla, he's known for his commitment to innovation.
SpaceX's IPO, the world's largest, was massively oversubscribed, and the stock rose right out of the gate, gaining 67% from the IPO price of $135 to a peak of $225 on June 16. And the company's trillion-dollar valuation helped it land a spot on the Nasdaq-100 on July 7, about 15 days after its launch as part of the index's new "fast track" rules. Prior to this, a company had to wait at least three months for inclusion.
So far, the Nasdaq-100 addition hasn't brought SpaceX lasting gains. The stock has declined from its peak, and as of the July 17 market close, SpaceX traded at $123.99, significantly below its IPO price.

As we can see, six out of 10 stocks advanced during this time period. But in the case of Seagate Technology and Western Digital, we can't attribute the movement to entrance in the index: Both companies are involved in the booming AI memory and storage businesses, and stocks in the industry have soared this year.
So history offers us a clear answer: While a stock may see a bit of upward momentum around the time of its addition to the index, it's generally limited in size and duration. In some cases, it's hardly even noticeable.
SpaceX has echoed this, advancing slightly right after the addition. But then the stock plummeted in the days to follow.
Look to earnings
What does this mean for you as an investor? A stock's entry into a particular index isn't a reason to add that player to your portfolio. It's great that a company is acknowledged as a giant of the times, but this doesn't necessarily make it a fantastic investment. Instead, investors should look to the company's earnings track record, or if the company isn't yet profitable, consider its path to profitability: Does it have a clear roadmap and goals that are attainable? And it's important to consider your own investment style too.
For example, SpaceX isn't yet profitable, and some of its biggest goals rely on technology that hasn't yet been proven -- if the company reaches its goals, it may be a smashing success, but along the way, the stock carries a significant amount of risk. So, while SpaceX may be appropriate for a very aggressive investor, it's not the best choice for a cautious investor.
History offers us a clear message: Nasdaq-100 membership, while exciting, isn't the key to stock performance. All of this means it's a better idea to turn our attention to the company's -- whether it's SpaceX or another -- next earnings reports and progress toward goals.

What Happens to Stocks After Joining the Nasdaq-100 (History Has a Clear Answer)

Palantir PLTR continues to produce impressive financial results, but one metric deserves more attention than any other: U.S. revenue growth.
The company generated $1.3 billion in U.S. revenues during the first quarter of 2026, more than doubling from the year-ago quarter with a 104% increase. Delivering triple-digit growth at Palantir's current scale demonstrates that demand for its Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP), Gotham and Foundry remains exceptionally strong.
Even more encouraging is the consistent acceleration in this metric. U.S. revenue growth improved from 55% in the first quarter of 2025 to 68% in the second quarter, 77% in the third quarter, 93% in the fourth quarter, and 104% in the first quarter of 2026. Rather than slowing as the business expands, Palantir continues to gain momentum, driven by growing adoption across both public-sector and commercial customers.
Although investors often focus on profitability, valuation, operating margins and cash flow, Palantir's U.S. revenue trajectory may be the clearest indicator of its competitive strength. Sustained triple-digit growth in its largest market suggests the company is still capturing market share and that customer demand remains far from saturated.
As long as Palantir continues delivering robust growth in its U.S. operations, the company is likely to remain one of the most compelling long-term growth stories in enterprise software.
What's Fueling Palantir's U.S. Momentum?
Several structural trends are driving the company's remarkable domestic growth.
Artificial Intelligence adoption remains the biggest catalyst. Organizations are increasingly deploying AI across mission-critical workflows, creating strong demand for Palantir's AIP platform, which enables customers to operationalize large language models while integrating them with enterprise data and existing business processes.
The commercial business has become another major growth engine. More private-sector companies are adopting Palantir's software to improve decision-making, automate operations and enhance productivity, resulting in a rapidly expanding customer base.
At the same time, government demand remains robust. Palantir continues to deepen its relationships with U.S. defense, intelligence and civilian agencies, benefiting from rising investments in AI-enabled national security, defense modernization and data analytics.

MongoDB is strengthening its position in AI-driven application development through its flexible developer data platform. MongoDB (MDB) Stock Moves -1.25%: What You Should Know

This year is shaping up to be a historic in terms of companies going public. Artificial intelligence (AI) start-ups Anthropic and OpenAI plan their initial public offerings (IPOs) this year, but unquestionably, the biggest debut is expected to be SpaceX. The company is looking to raise $75 billion in its offering, which will dwarf previous records by a wide margin.
The hype machine is ramping up at dizzying proportions, and that's understandable. The chance to get in on the ground floor and ride the rocket maker to new heights is certainly a tempting proposition. So, should investors buy SpaceX on IPO day? Let's see what lessons we can glean from history.

Ready for launch
Before we address the question at hand, it's worth looking at what the SpaceX offering will entail and what investors will get for their money.
In the company's latest S-1 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (aka SpaceX) revealed it will offer 555,555,555 shares of Class A common stock at an IPO price of $135 per share, raising roughly $75 billion and valuing the company at $1.77 trillion. The stock will be listed on the Nasdaq exchange using the symbol "SPCX."
SpaceX has three distinct business segments: rocket launch, satellite internet, and artificial intelligence (AI).
The most high-profile of the three is the rocket launch business, which has launched roughly 650 Falcon rockets with a 99% success rate. It also pioneered "reusable" rockets, making space travel more cost-effective.
The company also boasts the largest network of broadband and mobile satellites in Low-Earth orbit, with approximately 9,600 Starlink satellites, delivering service to millions of customers in 164 countries.
Last but not least is the company's AI segment, including Grok AI, thanks to the recent merger with xAI. SpaceX has ambitious plans to build and launch solar-powered orbital data centers, which it believes will offer "far greater scale and efficiency than terrestrial alternatives."
Late last week, SpaceX revealed in a regulatory filing that it had reached a deal with Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL) (NASDAQ: GOOG), under which the Google-parent will pay $920 million per month between Oct. 2026 and June 2029 for compute capacity, for a deal valued at $30 billion. This comes on the heels of a similar deal reached with Anthropic, which is paying SpaceX $1.25 billion per month.
The company's financial results are intriguing. In 2025, SpaceX generated revenue of $18.7 billion, up 33% year over year, but recorded a net loss of $4.9 billion under Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). On an adjusted basis, the company's results look more appealing, with adjusted EBITDA of $6.6 billion, though this ignores stock-based compensation, depreciation, and amortization, among other very real business expenses.
These financials don't include the recently inked agreements, which will no doubt improve its financial position.
What history says
While there are plenty of reasons to be excited about the SpaceX IPO, a look at history can be instructional, as the past is rife with examples of stocks that fell significantly in the wake of their public offerings.
Sam Grelck, equity strategy analyst at Truist, reviewed data from the 30 biggest IPOs of the past 15 years, and his findings are telling. More than half of these stocks were underwater after the first week, and also at 12 months post-IPO, with 17 of 30 stocks in the red. The best-performing stock in the group was Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR), which was up 153% after the first year but shed 53% of its value at one point during the year. Robinhood Markets (NASDAQ: HOOD) had the worst track record, losing 74% in the first year, after falling as much as 90%. The full data is illustrated in the chart below.
In nearly every case, the first year was a rocky one for these newly listed companies, which serves as a stark reminder for investors. Recently minted stocks can be particularly volatile, so IPO investing isn't for the faint of heart.
A couple of other caveats for thoughtful investors. While the offering price is $135 per share, retail investors may not be able to get that price. The hype ahead of the SpaceX launch has reached a fever pitch, which could drive the stock price up from the moment it begins trading, causing investors to pay a much higher price.
Furthermore, while investors will be able to own SpaceX stock, make no mistake about who will be in control. Founder and CEO Elon Musk will control 82% of the company's voting power, leaving retail investors with little say in matters requiring shareholder approval.
Last, but certainly not least, if SpaceX achieves its $1.77 trillion valuation, the stock would be selling for roughly 95 times sales, a premium valuation to be sure.
For investors who are still determined to buy the SpaceX IPO, it should be a small part of a well-balanced portfolio. It may also be worth waiting for the inevitable stock price fall to buy at a more reasonable price.

The SpaceX IPO is Just Days Away. Here's What History Says Will Happen Next.

Atlassian Corporation TEAM has seen a sharp fall in its stock price, declining 37.4% year to date (YTD), significantly underperforming the Zacks Computer and Technology sector’s growth of 23.5% and the Zacks Internet – Software industry’s drop of 6.3%.
TEAM’s underperformance reflects concerns over AI-investment execution risk, sizable restructuring-related margin pressure, moderating Data Center expansion trends and uncertainty surrounding the long-term cloud migration transition. These factors appear to be dampening the company's otherwise strong revenue growth and AI adoption momentum.
Atlassian stock has also underperformed its software peers, including Autodesk ADSK, Gitlab GTLB and MongoDB MDB. In the year-to-date period, Autodesk, GitLab and MongoDB shares have declined by a more modest 22.5%, 17.6% and 12.3%, respectively.

This performance led to a net margin of negative 2.9%, as the company continues to narrow its losses and move toward break-even.
The balance sheet as of January 2026 shows a debt-to-equity ratio of approximately 0.0x, indicating the company carries almost no debt relative to its shareholder equity. Its current ratio of nearly 4.7x suggests a very high level of short-term liquidity compared to its immediate obligations. Free cash flow reached approximately $500.2 million, though note that stock-based compensation represented roughly 109.0% of operating cash flow, meaning reported cash generation is heavily inflated by this non-cash add-back.
Risk profile comparison
Snowflake faces intense competition from established cloud giants like Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), and Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL), which may bundle competing services. The company also faces cybersecurity risks following unauthorized access to customer accounts in 2024, which damaged its reputation. Furthermore, its heavy reliance on Amazon’s infrastructure means any changes to that relationship could disrupt operations.
MongoDB faces similar pressure from legacy database providers such as IBM (NYSE:IBM), Oracle (NYSE:ORCL), and Microsoft, which have vast resources. The company is also highly dependent on its Atlas product, and any failure to maintain its adoption would significantly impact revenue. Additionally, the legal uncertainty surrounding its server-side public license could potentially hinder future adoption by developers or enterprise clients.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?
MongoDB and Snowflake have much in common. Both are benefiting from the AI boom and ubiquitous cloud-based data solutions. But they differ in many respects as well, which makes all the difference when it comes to attracting investors.
Snowflake’s business involves enterprise data management, and with its AI Data Cloud platform, it has become a leader in the industry. It has partnered with major tech companies and has seen accelerating revenue growth. But it appears that this growth expectation is reflected in the share price.
MongoDB’s database platform is gaining popularity for building modern applications. And yes, this includes those applications powered by AI. Its flagship Atlas cloud platform is seeing growing demand. Recent earnings results show that organizations are still spending on AI infrastructure despite economic uncertainty, and MongoDB is well positioned to benefit.
From my perspective, there’s nothing wrong with an investment in Snowflake except for its rich valuation. So, I’d choose MongoDB. Along with its more reasonable valuation, it offers exposure to AI and significant growth potential. If it keeps moving in its current direction, long-term investors should be rewarded.

Snowflake vs. MongoDB: Which Technology Stock Is a Better Buy in 2026?

Software stocks have had a brutal first five months of 2026, with many of them falling sharply even as the S&P 500 has risen. Snowflake (NYSE: SNOW), despite management describing its artificial intelligence (AI) data cloud as a beneficiary of the AI boom, has seen its shares fall alongside other software stocks this year amid investor concern that AI would disrupt software companies overall. Indeed, at one point in April, the stock sat more than 50% below where it had traded a year earlier. But the stock is rebounding now. In fact, the stock is now up sharply year to date, helped mainly by the market's reaction to the tech company's better-than-expected earnings report last week.
But is this news about more than Snowflake? Could there be more software companies that, like Snowflake, will actually benefit more from AI than they will be hurt by it? Snowflake's latest report is the loudest evidence yet that the market may have had it backward.

Snowflake reaccelerates
The company's fiscal first-quarter results (the period ended April 30, 2026) certainly didn't paint a picture of AI disrupting software. On the contrary, the business saw a significant acceleration.
The company's fiscal first-quarter product revenue, which accounts for the bulk of its total revenue, rose 34% year over year to $1.33 billion -- an acceleration from 30% in fiscal Q4 and 26% in the year-ago quarter. Additionally, management said this was the strongest sequential dollar growth in company history.
Further, Snowflake's acceleration is happening broadly across its business. Net revenue retention, which measures spending from existing customers against the prior year, ticked up from 125% in the prior quarter to 126%. And the company's remaining performance obligations (RPO), which represent contracted revenue not yet recognized, grew 38% year over year to $9.21 billion. Additionally, the company added 616 net new customers -- up 38% from a year ago.
Profitability is improving alongside the growth. Snowflake's non-GAAP (adjusted) operating margin expanded to 12% from 9%, and adjusted earnings per share rose to $0.39 from $0.24.
What's driving the inflection is AI, and not in the way some bears may have feared. Rather than displacing Snowflake's core platform, AI is pulling more data and more workloads onto it. The company's newer agentic products -- Snowflake Intelligence and its coding agent, Cortex Code -- are showing strong traction. And these offerings, in turn, are helping drive greater consumption.
"AI is accelerating the value that people can get from the data that they have put into Snowflake or that they can put into Snowflake," said CEO Sridhar Ramaswamy in the company's fiscal first-quarter earnings call.
Confident enough in the demand, management lifted its full-year product revenue guidance to $5.84 billion, or 31% growth, up from prior guidance of $5.66 billion and 27% growth. The company also signed a new $6 billion five-year agreement with Amazon's Amazon Web Services and expanded its partnership with OpenAI.
The group is turning -- but tread carefully
Snowflake isn't alone.
Observability specialist Datadog (NASDAQ: DDOG) got there first. Its first-quarter 2026 revenue rose 32% year over year to just over $1 billion -- the company's first billion-dollar quarter -- accelerating from 29% in the prior quarter and 25% a year earlier. Datadog raised its full-year outlook, too, and its stock has climbed more than 80% in 2026, trading near a 52-week high. The thesis is similar to Snowflake's: AI makes software systems more complex, and more complexity means more to monitor.
Database company MongoDB (NASDAQ: MDB) rounds out the picture. Its fiscal first-quarter revenue (the period ended April 30, 2026) rose 25% to $687.6 million, with its cloud database, Atlas, up 29% and now roughly three-quarters of total revenue. MongoDB raised its full-year revenue guidance as well, and shares continued higher the day after the report -- a sharp turn for a stock that was down more than 20% earlier in the year.
So, some of the laggards are no longer lagging -- and others in the software space may not have fully recovered the year's losses but have rebounded sharply from their lowest points.
The catch is that the rebound is well along, and the easy gains may already be behind.
For instance, Snowflake's stock surged about 35% in a single session after the report, its best day ever, and trades near $255 as of this writing -- back within reach of its 52-week high after a brutal stretch. Up about 16.5% in 2026, it is now significantly outperforming the S&P 500 year to date.
But the growth stock's valuation now leaves little slack. Snowflake remains unprofitable on a generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) basis, with the bottom line still deep in the red. Further, the stock's price-to-sales ratio now sits at 17 -- a steep valuation multiple that assumes the reacceleration holds for years, and that the company is able to begin reporting substantial profits -- profits that grow at strong rates for years.
Furthermore, investors should keep in mind that Snowflake's consumption model can swing both ways: revenue tracks how much customers actually use the platform, so if enterprise AI spending cools later this year, growth could quickly fade without any change in customer count.
Overall, Snowflake's business looks healthier than it has in a while, and the read-through for software in general is starting to look encouraging. But after a run-up like this, shares of Snowflake (and shares of other software stocks that have sharply rebounded over the last few weeks) simply may no longer be the bargains they were.
Regarding Snowflake stock specifically, I think the recent rebound has already more than priced in the change in sentiment for the company's future.

Software Was the Market's Big Laggard This Year. Snowflake's Blowout Might Be the Spark That Changes That.

MongoDB, Inc.MDB delivered first-quarter fiscal 2027 non-GAAP earnings of $1.32 per share, up 32% year over year and beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 11.86%.
Total revenues increased 25.3% year over year to $687.62 million and surpassed the consensus estimate by 3.84%.
Segment-wise, subscription revenues rose 25% year over year to $666.1 million, representing the dominant share of total revenues. Services revenues increased 22% year over year to $21.5 million, reflecting continued strength in the company’s subscription-led business model.
Within subscription revenues, Atlas-related revenues totaled $512.5 million, while MongoDB Enterprise Advanced and other revenues were $153.7 million. Management noted that Atlas represented roughly three-quarters of total first-quarter revenues, underscoring the continued momentum in the company’s cloud platform business.

MDB’s Q1 Customer Metrics
The company ended the fiscal first quarter with more than 67,700 customers, up from 57,100 in the prior-year period, adding 2,500 customers sequentially during the quarter.
Atlas customers exceeded 66,400 by the end of the quarter, increasing from 55,800 in the year-ago period.
In the first quarter of fiscal 2027, MongoDB had 2,895 customers with annual recurring revenues of at least $100,000, up from 2,506 in the prior-year quarter. Revenue growth from this cohort outpaced overall company revenue growth, reflecting sustained enterprise adoption.
The company also highlighted expanding platform adoption, with 45% of Atlas customers generating at least $100,000 in ARR using two or more features compared with 37% in the prior-year quarter. Total company net ARR expansion improved to 121%, reflecting healthy customer consumption trends.
Operating Details of MDB
In the fiscal first quarter, MongoDB’s non-GAAP gross profit was $512.2 million, while the non-GAAP gross margin remained stable year over year at 74%.
Non-GAAP sales and marketing expenses increased 18.6% year over year to $214.7 million. Sales and marketing expenses, as a percentage of revenues, decreased 170 basis points (bps) year over year to 31.2%.
Non-GAAP research and development expenses grew 26.5% on a year-over-year basis to $127.1 million. Research and development, as a percentage of revenues, increased 20 bps year over year to 18.5%.
Non-GAAP general and administrative expenses rose 25.5% year over year, reaching $47.3 million in the reported quarter. General and administrative expenses, as a percentage of revenues, remained the same year over year to 6.9%.
MongoDB reported non-GAAP income from operations of $123.2 million, up from $87.4 million in the prior-year quarter. The non-GAAP operating margin expanded to 18% from 16%, reflecting improved operating leverage and continued revenue strength.
MongoDB's Balance Sheet & Cash Flow
As of April 30, 2026, MongoDB had cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments of $2.4 billion compared with $2.4 billion as of Jan. 31, 2026.
Operating cash flow was $201.6 million in the fiscal first quarter, up from $179.6 million reported in the prior quarter.
Free cash flow during the quarter was $197.5 million compared with $105.9 million in the prior quarter.
MongoDB Raises Fiscal 2027 Guidance
For the second-quarter fiscal 2027, MongoDB expects revenues between $729 million and $734 million. Non-GAAP earnings are projected in the range of $1.58 to $1.61 per share.
For fiscal 2027, MongoDB now anticipates revenues between $2.92 billion and $2.96 billion. Non-GAAP earnings are expected between $5.95 and $6.14 per share following the company’s stronger-than-expected first-quarter performance.
