1. The Cheapest AI Yet Squeezes the Companies Selling It
Tokens serve as the billing unit that AI models use for their services. On Monday, a million tokens could be purchased for $0.97. That's a record low, and less than half the summer high, according to Silicon Data's index of token prices. Low-priced tokens benefit anyone executing queries but create difficulties for those selling the resulting answers.

Prices fall; bills don't: Cheap Chinese open-source models and price cuts at the biggest labs helped drive the slide. Those labs' computing bills are already committed, so they don't shrink when a query gets cheaper.
Two of those labs want to sell shares: Anthropic and OpenAI both filed confidentially for initial public offerings this summer. Each has to pitch investors on a business whose price per unit is falling.
Microsoft will soon make volume visible: For the first time, Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) will report revenue in dollars for Azure, the computing power it rents to other companies. That number moves with how much customers actually use.
The build-out pays off in the future only if usage increases faster than the price per unit declines. Microsoft's new Azure line will show whether that's happening.
2. Nvidia Is Spending Like the Easy Years Are Over
Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) confirmed on Thursday that it will spend $13 billion to buy Hugging Face, the hub where developers publish and test open-source AI models. Nvidia once sold every chip it made to buyers with no alternative. Now those buyers have one, so Nvidia is spending to stay central anyway.
The seller made the first call: Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue said he approached Nvidia over the summer, not the reverse; even a thriving platform felt it needed a giant's backing. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2027, pending regulatory approval.
Nvidia wrote another check on Monday: It put $3.5 billion into Taiwanese chip designer MediaTek, whose parts will plug into Nvidia systems. That keeps Nvidia in the chain even when a buyer picks a rival chip.
Nvidia holds the lease under someone else's deal: Hut 8 (NASDAQ: HUT) will develop the Texas data center behind the $35 billion Anthropic-Lambda deal. Nvidia backs Lambda, leases the site, and sells the chips that fill it.
More of Nvidia's sales now come from customers it helped fund. Owning it from here means trusting Nvidia to earn its keep across the whole stack.
3. Nvidia's Beat and a Telling Purchase
Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) beat again. Revenue topped $96 billion, more than double a year ago, and the stock is up 9% since reporting. What lifted its shares? The CFO guiding for 70% revenue growth in 2028. But our analyst Emily Flippen calls Nvidia "a lagging indicator of the AI buildout, not a leading one." Its reported revenue just confirms spending that the market already knew about. But the more revealing news came Thursday, when Nvidia revealed what's on its shopping list.
The deal: Nvidia reportedly agreed to buy Hugging Face, the open-source hub where developers publish and test AI models, for about $13 billion. It's Nvidia's largest acquisition ever, at roughly 86 times the target's sales.
Why that price isn't incredibly high: Nothing is expensive against Nvidia's scale. Flippen notes Nvidia could buy Hugging Face seven times over using cash already set aside to repurchase its own stock. She also flags this as a defensive hedge. Nvidia's biggest customers are starting to design their own chips. Whoever owns the platform developers download models from can steer them toward rival hardware. Nvidia is paying to keep that door shut.
We've recommended Nvidia more than 30 times and never sold. In fact, a $10,000 stake invested in 2005, when we first recommended Nvidia in Stock Advisor, is worth about $13 million today. But the build-out that made it can't grow forever, and this deal is a tell that Nvidia knows the easy years are behind it. What we're watching now is whether it can defend its lead as well as it once extended it.
3. Snowflake, Sezzle, and FIGS All Sounded Like Bad Ideas
Three of this week's Breakfast News statements went back to an earlier recommendation. We issued each one before the market came around.
Snowflake went nowhere for five years. Our first Rule Breakers recommendation of Snowflake (NYSE: SNOW), May 2021 at $245.15, is up 45% and trails the S&P 500. Hidden Gems recommended it in June 2022 at $138.24. That call is up about 158%. It's still a Buy in Hidden Gems and Rule Breakers.
Sezzle carried its industry's stigma. Wall Street treated buy now, pay later as a subprime accident waiting to happen. We first recommended Sezzle (NASDAQ: SEZL) in August 2024 at $21.32, and shares have more than quintupled. It turns 61% of revenue into free cash flow, a software-like rate.
FIGS is the newest of the three. Scrubs maker FIGS (NYSE: FIGS) disappointed for years after its 2021 IPO. We recommended it in Rule Breakers in June 2026 at $12.22. Revenue rose nearly 29% year over year in the second quarter.
Sezzle paid for its industry's reputation. Snowflake and FIGS had their own bad years. None of that told you what any of those businesses is worth today.
4. Uber Is Lobbying Against the Robotaxis It's Funding
Uber (NYSE: UBER) said Wednesday that it will cut 10% of its workforce, roughly 3,300 jobs, to flatten management. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi framed it as freeing capacity for a planned $10 billion-plus push into autonomous vehicles. He didn't blame AI, unlike most tech CEOs who cut staff this year.
Then Uber lobbied to slow robotaxis down: It joined driver unions in New Jersey and Washington, D.C., to push for rules that keep human drivers in most self-driving rides. In New Jersey, it wants at least 85% of rides to have a person behind the wheel. Alphabet's (NASDAQ: GOOG) Waymo says the 85% minimum solves a problem that doesn't exist.
The rule would bite Waymo hardest: One tracker counts just over 200 Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) vehicles registered as unsupervised, against Waymo's 4,000 across 14 cities. Tesla teased a Cybercab event Wednesday, and shares rose 5.5% that day.
The Rule Breakers recommendation is outperforming the S&P 500 by more than 250% since July 2022. Uber is spending $10 billion on a fleet it doesn't have yet. The thesis needs the rules to slow Waymo down long enough for Uber to close that gap.
5. MongoDB Beat, Raised Guidance, and Fell 15%
MongoDB (NASDAQ: MDB) sells the database where applications keep their data. Its Atlas cloud service is now where AI coding agents read and write live data, too. Our Rule Breakers recommendation reported Tuesday night. The quarter beat estimates, management raised its full-year outlook, and shares fell almost 15%.
Growth accelerated, and margins followed: Revenue rose 30% year over year in the fiscal second quarter, the best in several years. Adjusted operating margin reached 24%, up from 15%.
Then management forecast a slower third quarter: That gave investors an excuse to sell after a string of blowout quarters.
The payoff runs a step behind the build-out. Software like MongoDB's gets used after the servers are installed. It launched a service connecting coding agents like Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex to live Atlas data. Contracted future revenue climbed 91% to $1.52 billion, so the demand is booked.
These results show that the market has stopped paying in advance for AI demand. It wants revenue collected rather than contracted. Holding MongoDB means trusting those signed commitments to arrive on schedule.
6. The Week Ahead
The August jobs report landed this morning. Strong hiring makes a rate hike more likely, and higher rates hit expensive AI stocks hardest. Those stocks are priced on profits that won't arrive for years. Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller said on Thursday that he'd lean toward holding steady this month. Odds of a September hike fell to 50.4% from 63.2% a day earlier, close to a coin flip.
Oil keeps inflation in the picture: Crude near $92 keeps the pressure on, and consumer and producer price reports land next week.
Then management forecast a slower third quarter: That gave investors an excuse to sell after a string of blowout quarters.
Four recommendations report: Chewy (NYSE: CHWY) reports on Wednesday morning and AeroVironment (NASDAQ: AVAV) on Wednesday afternoon. Oracle (NYSE: ORCL) and Adobe (NASDAQ: ADBE) follow on Thursday afternoon.

Shares of enterprise database upstart MongoDB (NASDAQ: MDB) fell this week, with the stock down 14.5% as of Thursday at 1:30 p.m., according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence.
MongoDB had been a victim of the first half of the year's "SaaS-pocalypse," in which software-as-a-service stocks sold off hard amid fears of AI disruption.

However, from the end of June through the early part of earnings season, software stocks had rebounded strongly, as most companies hadn't yet seen any disruption to their businesses.
So, MongoDB had already seen its stock rise through this earnings season, heading into this week's report. While the company delivered strong results, apparently, investors were looking for a bit more.
MongoDB beats across the board, except maybe its as-a-service offering
In its fiscal second quarter, MongoDB grew revenue 30.5% to $771.8 million, with adjusted (non-GAAP) earnings per share growing 90% to $1.90. Both figures handily beat analyst expectations. Not only that, but MongoDB also guided well above analyst expectations for the current quarter and raised its outlook for the year.
So, what was the problem? Well, even after this week's sell-off, MongoDB trades at about 59 times this year's adjusted EPS estimates, and just over 10 times this year's revenue estimate. That's not overly expensive relative to where software stocks used to trade, but it's a more suspect valuation in the age of AI uncertainty.
Second, MongoDB had a curious mix of revenue last quarter, with its Enterprise Advanced segment growing 36%, but its cloud-delivered as-a-service offering, Atlas, growing at just 29%. Enterprise Advanced is a subscription offering that large enterprises run on their own on-premises, private cloud, or hybrid infrastructure. Atlas, on the other hand, is a usage-based database-as-a-service offering delivered through the cloud. In recent years, the Atlas segment has typically grown at a higher rate, and it now accounts for over 73% of total revenue.
So, the fact that Atlas is now growing more slowly, even as Enterprise Advanced accelerates, may have given investors pause, given that Atlas is now the largest revenue driver.
MongoDB could be an AI winner
MongoDB's flexible database architecture could eventually become an AI winner as artificial intelligence migrates from the hardware-based infrastructure build-out to the proliferation of AI-powered software and apps. While investors haven't seen the massive acceleration in growth we've seen in some other software companies, such as those in the cybersecurity sector, MongoDB is still posting strong, steady growth.
For those looking for opportunities in software amid this year's AI-driven disruption fears, MongoDB is a name to add, or at least put on one's watch list.

Wednesday’s US economic news was mixed for stocks after July factory orders rose more than expected, but the Aug ADP employment change rose less than expected.
Stock index futures initially moved lower in overnight trade as US-Iran hostilities pushed crude oil prices to a 6-week high and the 10-year T-note yield up to a 2.75-year high of 4.82%.
The global bond sell-off generally continued on Wednesday, pushing bond yields to multi-year highs and undercutting stocks. The UK 10-year gilt yield surged to a 19-year high of 5.29%, the German 10-year bund yield jumped to a 15-year high of 3.39%, the Japanese 10-year JGB bond yield surged to a 30-year high of 3.04%, and the 10-year T-note yield rose to a 2.75-year high of 4.82%.
US MBA mortgage applications rose +0.8% in the week ended August 28, with the purchase mortgage sub-index up +2.2% and the refinancing mortgage sub-index down -1.1%. The average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage rose +1 bp to 6.79% from 6.78% in the prior week.
The US Aug ADP employment change rose by +38,000, showing a slightly weaker labor market than expectations of +47,000.
US July factory orders rose +0.9% m/m, stronger than expectations of +0.7% m/m. Also, July factory orders ex-transportation rose +0.6% m/m, stronger than expectations of +0.4% m/m.
New York Fed President John Williams said, "The data recently has been encouraging. I am actually seeing the trend in inflation moving slowly down as some of the effects of the tariffs move into the rearview mirror."
The Fed Beige Book was positive for stocks as it stated that economic activity in the Fed's 12 districts in the period through August 24 "increased modestly," with prices accelerating moderately in most districts. Also, “healthy labor demand was seen most frequently in manufacturing, construction and some service sectors, while retail and hospitality sectors saw falling labor demand."
Oct WTI crude oil prices (CLV26) climbed to a fresh 6-week high on Wednesday as fighting intensified between the US and Iran. The US carried out a second round of strikes in three days overnight, targeting radar systems and mine-laying capabilities along Iran's southern coast. Iran retaliated with drone and missile attacks on US bases across the Middle East. Also, Axios reported that the US attacked two Iranian tankers anchored off Iran’s north coast under a new “tanker for tanker” policy approved by President Trump to further deter Iranian attacks on tankers that move through the Strait of Hormuz. Gains in crude were limited as supply concerns abated slightly after US Energy Secretary Wright said that over 17 million bbl of oil went through the Strait of Hormuz on Monday.
Q2 earnings results are a bullish factor for stocks. The S&P 500 is tracking for earnings growth of almost 32% in Q2, well above projections of +23%, and nearly four times the average earnings growth rate outside of the Covid period since Q4 of 2013, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. AI spending is expected to account for most of earnings, with AI infrastructure stocks set to contribute nearly 60% of the S&P 500's earnings-per-share growth in Q2. So far, earnings results have been positive, with 86% of the 489 S&P 500 companies that have reported Q2 earnings beating estimates, according to Bloomberg data.
The markets are discounting a 60% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on September 15-16.

December 10-year T-notes (ZNZ6) closed up by +1 tick on Wednesday. The 10-year T-note yield fell -0.4 bp to 4.794%. T-notes recovered from a 1.75-year nearest-futures low today and turned higher, and the 10-year T-note yield fell from a 2.75-year high of 4.816% and moved lower. Short covering emerged and pushed T-notes higher after the Aug ADP employment change rose less than expected, and after New York Fed President Williams said inflation is continuing to trend down. Gains in T-notes were limited after WTI crude oil climbed to a 6-week high, which boosted inflation expectations and is hawkish for Fed policy.
European government bond yields moved higher on Wednesday. The 10-year German bund yield climbed to a 15-year high of 3.395% and finished up +3.2 bp to 3.376%. The 10-year UK gilt yield jumped to a 19-year high of 5.289% and finished up +1.0 bp to 5.230%.
ECB Governing Council member and Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel warned that "inflation isn't close to our medium-term target" and said, "markets are pricing in a probability of more than 95% that we'll raise interest rates at our September meeting, and I'd say that the markets have a rather good understanding of how we're likely to respond at this stage."
Markets are discounting a 99% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on September 10.

Strength in chipmakers on Wednesday supported the broader market. Nvidia (NVDA) closed up more than +3% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials. Airlines and cruise line operators moved higher on Wednesday after crude oil prices stabilized. United Airlines Holdings (UAL) closed up more than +3%, and Alaska Air Group (ALK), Delta Air Lines (DAL), Southwest Airlines (LUV), and Carnival (CCL) closed up more than +2%. Also, American Airlines Group (AAL) and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) closed up more than +1%.
Palo Alto Networks (PANW) closed down more than -9% to lead cybersecurity stocks lower and losers in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 after reporting Q4 subscription and support revenue of $2.67 billion, below the consensus of $2.68 billion. Also, CrowdStrike Holdings (CRWD) closed down more than -5%, and Cloudflare (NET), SentinelOne (S), and Fortinet (FTNT) closed down more than -4%. In addition, Zscaler (ZS) closed down more than -3% and Okta (OKTA) closed down more than -2%.
Dell Technologies (DELL) closed up more than +15% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q2 total net revenue of $46.97 billion, well above the consensus of $44,78 billion, and raising its 2027 revenue forecast to $192 billion from a previous forecast of $165 billion to $169 billion, stronger than the consensus of $173.76 billion.
Gitlab (GTLB) closed up more than +9% after boosting its 2027 revenue forecast to $1.13 billion from a previous forecast of $1.11 billion to $1.12 billion, better than the consensus of $1.12 billion.
SiriusXM (SIRI) closed up more than +7% after Deutsche Bank upgraded the stock to buy from hold with a price target of $45.
Brown-Forman (BF.B) closed up more than +3% after reporting a Q1 gross margin of 60.2%, better than the consensus of 58.6%.

Stocks Push Higher as Crude Oil and Bond Yields Stabilize

In trading on Wednesday, defense shares were relative laggards, down on the day by about 0.7%. Helping drag down the group were shares of Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, off about 3.1% and shares of Lockheed Martin down about 2.1% on the day.

Brown-Forman (BF.B) is up more than +5% after reporting a Q1 gross margin of 60.2%, better than the consensus of 58.6%.
SiriusXM (SIRI) is up more than +5% after Deutsche Bank upgraded the stock to buy from hold with a price target of $45.
Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) is up more than +3% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials after UBS raised its price target on the stock to $320 from $280.

Shares of MongoDB (NASDAQ: MDB) slumped out of the gate on Wednesday, plunging as much as 14.6%. As of 11:02 a.m. ET, the stock was still down 10.8%.
The catalyst that drove the database-as-a-service (DBaaS) provider lower was its quarterly financial report. While the results were better than expected, investors wanted more.

Too much is never enough
For its fiscal 2027 second quarter (ended July 31), MongoDB delivered revenue of $772 million, up 30% year over year, showing that its strategy to tap into the booming demand for artificial intelligence (AI) is paying off. As a result, the company delivered adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $1.90, which rose 90%.
For context, analysts' consensus estimates were looking for revenue of $734 million and adjusted EPS of $1.61, so MongoDB surpassed both benchmarks with room to spare.
MongoDB continued to attract new users, adding 2,900 net new customers to the company's database-as-a-service solution -- Atlas -- bringing the total to 70,600, up 18% year over year.
The company also continues to generate plenty of cash, with operating cash flow of $141.9 million and free cash flow of $137.6 million, both up 97%.
The AI wildcard
Over the past few years, MongoDB has pivoted to adapt its offerings to focus on the accelerating adoption of AI. That strategy is paying off, as customers deploying AI on its Atlas database now account for 30% of the company's annual recurring revenue. Customers are using the secure Atlas environment to build AI applications, while also allowing AI agents to tap into complex data sets.
As a result of the company's robust performance, management increased its full-year guidance. MongoDB is now forecasting revenue of $3 billion and adjusted EPS of $6.49, or growth of 22% and 31%, respectively, at the midpoint of its guidance.
MongoDB stock isn't cheap, selling for 63 times forward earnings and 53 times next year's expected earnings. Investors found it hard to justify a premium of that magnitude with low-double-digit growth -- which helps explain today's sell-off.
