Analysts expect a modest performance, with our Zacks Consensus Estimates calling for total revenues of approximately $41.53 billion (+4.2% YoY) and EPS of $3.42 (-3.93% YoY). The consensus estimate for EPS has been unchanged in the past 60 days.
The company’s Zacks Rank currently sits at #3 (Hold), reflecting balanced but cautious expectations as the housing market remains constrained. Investors will be focused on management’s commentary regarding underlying demand trends and the trajectory for the remainder of the year.
How Will Home Depot’s Performance Compare?
Comparable sales are expected to be relatively flat to slightly positive. The leading home improvement retailer is reaping the benefits of its investments in AI, delivery, and supply chain optimization as recent online comps have shown. Consumer trends in the home improvement space reflect a cautious but resilient buyer. Shoppers are prioritizing essential repairs and smaller projects over large-scale renovations, driven by elevated borrowing costs and economic uncertainty.
This has led to more measured spending patterns, with strength in categories tied to maintenance and outdoor living. Home Depot’s investments in its professional customer offerings and supply chain have helped it capture share in this environment, though overall ticket sizes remain under pressure compared to peak years.
The interest rate environment will be a key topic on the earnings call. With 30-year mortgage rates still elevated, housing turnover remains suppressed, which historically limits big-ticket purchases. This dynamic has supported steady, albeit modest, demand for repair and maintenance projects. Home Depot’s Pro segment is likely to remain a bright spot, as contractors remain active on smaller-scale jobs even as big-ticket renovations stay selective.
The SRS acquisition has emerged as a meaningful growth lever for Home Depot. Early signs of synergies, particularly through cross-selling with Home Depot HD and GMS, are encouraging. Similar to Home Depot, Lowe’s stock carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), as analysts await more clarity on the pace of recovery in the home improvement sector. Like its larger peer, Lowe’s faces a challenging macro backdrop but continues to benefit from its strategic focus on the professional customer and operational improvements.
Comparable sales during the quarter are expected to show modest improvement. The company has seen relative strength in its Pro segment, which now represents a growing portion of sales.
Lowe’s LOW has also benefited from its expanded offerings in online fulfillment, which have helped drive engagement. The retailer is exploring AI-enabled agentic commerce, where digital assistants help customers discover and purchase products. Home Depot, Lowe's Headline Big Week for Retail Earnings

We begin to wind down Q1 earnings season this week. Key companies are scheduled to report — especially the most “magnificent” of the “Mag 7,” NVIDIA NVDA, along with Home Depot HD, Target TGT and Walmart WMT — but overall reporting volume is taking a step down after the past two weeks of 1000+ companies having reported per week.
We do see some key economic reports this week, as well, although this too winds down a tad. Pending Home Sales on Tuesday — the same day as Home Depot’s earnings report — join Housing Starts and Building Permits later in the week for a look at the still-challenged housing market. Only three of the past 12 months saw positive pending home sales growth.
Oil Prices Stay Above $100/bbl on Strait Stalemate
By far the biggest concern facing the stock market to begin a new week of trading is the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz, obstructing all but a few oil tanker passages per day, and helping decrease oil reserve levels around the world while gasoline prices continue creeping ever pricier. We’re currently at $103 per barrel (/bbl) on the WTI and $107/bbl on Brent crude, but more importantly, we appear to be at an impasse with the country of Iran, which has clamped down on the Strait in the wake of U.S. and Israel bombings on the country, which started over 11 weeks ago.
President Trump’s visit to China last week looks to have pushed the needle not at all on this burgeoning oil crisis; China is one of the few countries so far allowed to ship oil out of the Persian Gulf, but the U.S. has clearly not won similar considerations. And as we embark on a new summer driving season with Memorial Day Weekend coming up, gasoline and jet fuel demand only look to increase domestically, which would naturally push prices at the pump higher.
The choices currently at hand appear to be widely disparate, and equally unpopular: 1) bring U.S. troops on the ground to march on Tehran and overtake the current Iranian regime, which would cost blood and treasure that would far outweigh what we saw in the nine-year war with Iraq, or 2) make a deal with the Iranian government, which would include major reparations and still leave unclear whether the country would continue to develop uranium for a nuclear arsenal. But to do nothing would be to see oil and other petroleum product shortages to further undesirable levels — and only six months (and counting) from U.S. midterm elections.
This all said, pre-markets have reversed course from early-morning lows, and are now in positive territory across major indexes. This followed the worst trading day on the S&P 500 and Nasdaq on Friday since March, down between -1% (Dow) and -1.55% (Nasdaq). At this hour, the S&P 500 is back above 7400, the Dow back above 49,600, the Nasdaq once again near 29,400 and the small-cap Russell 2000 back above 2800. Discussions about a truce in the Strait add positivity to bargain-hunting early birds in Monday’s market.
BIDU Misses Q1 Earnings, Shares Climb on AI Revenues
Chinese Internet giant Baidu BIDU missed already-lowered earnings estimates in its Q1 report this morning, -6.42% to $1.75 per share, but shares are up +4.8% on the news. The company’s revenue growth on its burgeoning AI business strength was a positive development; we may expect Baidu to shed its Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell) and Value-Growth-Momentum grade of “F.”

NVDA, WMT Report This Week, but News on the Strait Is Key

Chicago, IL – May 18, 2026 – Zacks.com releases the list of companies likely to issue earnings surprises. This week’s list includes Walmart WMT, Amazon AMZN and Home Depot HD.
Retail Earnings Loom: What Can Investors Expect?
Walmart shares have been standout performers this year, handily outperforming not just the broader market indexes but also the likes of Amazon and many members of the Magnificent 7 group.
Walmart and other big-box retailers are undoubtedly facing a difficult operating environment, with elevated fuel costs not only adding to consumers' financial burdens but also increasing the retailers' expenses.
Walmart is better positioned than many others in the space, given its value orientation, greater indexing to groceries, and robust digital capabilities. Walmart has been consistently gaining market share among higher-income households in recent years, more than offsetting affordability-based demand softness among its lower-income consumers. With all of these positive attributes still very much in place, we expect Walmart shares to sustain their recent momentum following quarterly results on Thursday, May 21st.
The chart below shows the year-to-date performance of Walmart shares (green line, up +17.8%) relative to the Mag 7 group (blue line, up +1.9%), the S&P 500 index (red line, up +10.4%), Amazon (purple line, up +14.3%) and Home Depot shares (bottom line in the chart, down -13.5%). Home Depot reports results before the market's open on Tuesday, May 19th.
Walmart has a large and growing digital operation, but its merchandise remains heavily weighted toward groceries and other essential, must-have items.
This orientation towards essentials, coupled with Walmart's well-earned reputation for low prices, provides the company's results with a high degree of cyclical stability and hence the stock's defensive attributes. Walmart's value orientation has been a key contributing factor to the company's ability to gain market share among high-income households. The company's growing digital offerings also contribute to that trend. Growth in e-commerce, coupled with gains from third-party fulfillment and advertising, are some of the other areas that will benefit results this quarter.
Walmart is expected to report $0.65 in EPS on $174.07 billion in revenues, representing year-over-year changes of +6.6% and +5.1%, respectively. Estimates have been stable, though they have modestly come down since the quarter got underway.
In terms of same-store sales, the expectation is U.S. comps (ex fuel) of +3.86%, which will compare to a +4.6% gain in the preceding quarter (vs. expectations of +4.24%) and a +4.5% gain in the year-earlier period (vs. expectations of +3.9%). A positive general merchandise read will also have positive read-throughs for Target.
Same-store sales at Home Depot are expected to be flat (0% growth) when it reports results on Tuesday, May 19th. Comps at Home Depot have been positive for the last four quarters, though the gains were modest at +0.3% and +0.1% in each of the last two quarters. The stock's underperformance is a reflection of the housing market's challenges, with continued soft demand for home improvement projects and big-ticket appliances.
With respect to the Retail sector 2026 Q1 earnings season scorecard, we now have results from 17 of the 31 retailers in the S&P 500 index. Regular readers know that Zacks has a dedicated stand-alone economic sector for the retail space, unlike its placement in the Consumer Staples and Consumer Discretionary sectors in the Standard & Poor's standard industry classification.
The Zacks Retail sector includes not only Walmart, Home Depot, and other traditional retailers, but also online vendors like Amazonand restaurant players. The 17 Zacks Retail companies in the S&P 500 index that have reported Q1 results already belong mostly to the ecommerce and restaurant industries, though we have a number of restaurant companies on deck to report results this week as well.
Total Q1 earnings for these 17 retailers that have reported are up +1.9% from the same period last year on +13.9% higher revenues, with 58.8% beating EPS estimates and 82.4% beating revenue estimates.
As you can see above, the EPS beats percentages for these online players and restaurant operators are tracking significantly below the historical averages for this group of companies, but revenue beats are far more numerous.
With respect to the earnings and revenue growth rates at this stage, we like to show the group's performance with and without Amazon, whose results are among the 17 companies that have already reported. As we know, Amazon's Q1 earnings were modestly down (-0.8%) on +16.6% higher revenues, as it missed both EPS and top- line expectations.
Earnings for the group outside of Amazon are up +7.3% on a +10.4% top-line gain.
The Earnings Big Picture
The Q1 earnings season reconfirmed the steadily improving earnings outlook we have consistently highlighted in our earnings commentary.
The earnings focus lately has been on the blockbuster mega-cap Tech players in the Magnificent 7 group, but results have been impressive across the board in all sectors. Most companies comfortably beat the Zacks Consensus EPS and revenue estimates and are showing accelerating earnings and revenue growth trends.
Most importantly, the substance and tone of management guidance have largely been reassuring, notwithstanding the uncertain geopolitical backdrop. This is keeping the aggregate revisions trend positive, which we discuss in some detail later on.
Regular readers of our earnings commentary are familiar with the steadily improving earnings outlook we have consistently highlighted over the past year. This improvement in the earnings outlook has been driven mostly by the Tech sector over the past year, with positive Tech sector estimate revisions offsetting negative revisions elsewhere, keeping the aggregate revisions trend in the neutral-to-positive direction.
This favorable revisions trend modestly expanded beyond its Tech sector core over the last couple of quarters, and we are seeing that at play in 2026 Q2 as well, as shown nearby.
As you can see in the above chart, the current expectation is of +21.2% earnings growth in 2026 Q2 on +10.2% higher revenues.
Estimates have moved higher for 7 of the 16 Zacks sectors since the quarter got underway. These sectors are: Tech, Energy, Basic Materials, Utilities, Industrials, Retail, and Business Services.
The positive revisions trend for the Energy and Basic Materials sectors is primarily a function of the conflict in the Persian Gulf and its effect on the supply of oil, LNG, and other commodities.
The upgrade to Retail sector earnings estimates is primarily a function of momentum in Amazon's business, which we group in the Zacks Retail sector. We suspect that elevated oil prices will prove to be a significant headwind for the sector's profitability. The negative impact on the Retail sector's earnings outlook will mostly be through diminished consumer demand, but high oil prices will also stress the freight/logistics component.
On the negative side, Q2 estimates have declined for 9 of the 16 Zacks sectors. The sectors suffering the most declines include Transportation, Autos, Consumer Discretionary, Construction, Finance, and Consumer Staples.
For calendar year 2026, total S&P 500 earnings are currently expected to be up +19.4%, compared to +13.1% earnings growth last year and +16.4% expected next year.
All 16 Zacks sectors are currently expected to enjoy positive earnings growth in 2026, a development that we haven't seen in a very long time. The Tech and Energy sectors are big contributors to earnings growth in 2026, with +33.9% and +60% earnings growth, respectively.
Excluding the Energy sector's substantial contribution, 2026 earnings growth for the rest of the index would +17.5% (vs. +19.4% otherwise. Excluding the Tech sector, index earnings would be up +11.9% in 2026.
2026 Q1 Earnings Season Scorecard
Through Friday, May 15th, we have seen Q1 results from 456 S&P 500 members or 91.2% of the index's total membership. Total earnings for these 456 index members are up +21.3% from the same period last year on +10.4% higher revenues, with 79.6% beating EPS estimates and 78.5% beating revenue estimates.
We have more than 100 companies on deck to report Q1 results this week, including 17 S&P 500 members. The notable companies reporting this week include Nvidia, Walmart, Home Depot, Deere & Company, Target, and Toll Brothers.

For the last five years or so, The Home Depot (NYSE: HD) has fallen out of favor with the stock market. It's as though the company has become inextricably tied to the housing slowdown.
The stock's performance tells a brutal story. Home Depot's shares are down 21.4% over the last year, up just 3% over the last three years, and still down 8% over the past five years.

However, what people seem to be overlooking is the business's demonstration of success amid one of the most difficult housing markets in recent years. And that's how the home improvement retailer could take off should macroeconomic conditions shift ever so slightly.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development, new home sales rose 7.4% in March from the previous month, and 3.3% from March 2025.
That's why Home Depot's first-quarter earnings for fiscal 2027 on Wednesday (May 19) could send the stock soaring.
2026 has become a homebuyer's market
According to realtor.com's latest weekly U.S. housing trends, new listings -- a metric that shows how many new homes came on the market -- rose 2.6%. This is despite falling median home prices and an increasing active inventory. With average mortgage rates holding steady across the United States over the spring, sellers seem to be interested in reengaging with home buyers.
That gives consumers a lot of choices, and an uptick in new home sales in March isn't surprising. At a conference last month, Home Depot's management indicated that consumer balance sheets are currently incredibly robust due to substantial increases in home equity value over the prior six years.
Therefore, consumers are not unwilling to spend -- they are simply apprehensive about committing to large discretionary renovations amid the current economic uncertainty. In short, a surge in new home sales is excellent news for home improvement retailers.
The company has been working hard
Management admits that the housing market has been "frozen." Historically, low levels of turnover in existing-home sales usually turn quickly. But over the last three to four years, the sales slump has persisted. But despite these harsh conditions, Home Depot still managed to post five consecutive quarters of positive comparable store sales in the U.S. by late 2025.
So if management delivers even modestly encouraging guidance on Wednesday, especially around housing demand, contractor spending, and consumer activity, the market could pivot quickly.
Another very important indicator of investor confidence is Home Depot's steady commitment to increasing shareholder returns through its dividend. While Home Depot's shares fell from their highs, the dividend has continued to climb, making the dividend yield more attractive than at almost any time in recent memory.
What's at the core of Home Depot's growth?
Perhaps the least appreciated aspect of Home Depot's story is the evolution of its professional contractor business model. The company is creating what could become the dominant professional contractor ecosystem in the industry.
The potential size of the opportunity is immense. Home Depot estimates the professional contractor market alone totals approximately $700 billion per annum. To tap into a larger share of that spending, the management has committed significant dollars over several years to develop delivery infrastructure, outside sales teams, trade credit programs, distribution facilities, and acquire specialty businesses such as SRS Distribution, GMS Inc., and Mingledorff's.
Each of these businesses extends Home Depot's reach into areas including roofing, drywall, ceilings, HVAC distribution, and large job-site fulfillment.
The strategy isn't solely focused on generating additional sales volume, but centers around providing support services that make professional contractors reliant on Home Depot.
Professional contractors generally have consistent purchasing habits, typically purchase higher volumes of merchandise, and are more likely to generate repeat business with suppliers who offer reliable delivery and efficient ordering processes. Home Depot is developing the systems necessary to become the preferred supplier. This development dramatically alters the company's long-term growth outlook.
Home Depot stock could be mispriced
Long-term investors will be paying close attention to the upcoming earnings on May 19 -- not necessarily for instant results, but to see whether the foundation for the company's next phase of growth is already beginning to take shape.
Consequently, the market's current perception of the stock may shift, with Wednesday's earnings acting as the catalyst.

The Zacks Analyst Blog Highlights Home Depot, TJX Companies, Marvell Technology and C&F Financial

At Holdings Channel, we have reviewed the latest batch of the 156 most recent 13F filings for the 03/31/2026 reporting period, and noticed that Home Depot Inc (Symbol: HD) was held by 52 of these funds. When hedge fund managers appear to be thinking alike, we find it is a good idea to take a closer look.
Before we proceed, it is important to point out that 13F filings do not tell the whole story, because these funds are only required to disclose their long positions with the SEC, but are not required to disclose their short positions. A fund making a bearish bet against a stock by shorting calls, for example, might also be long some amount of stock as they trade around their overall bearish position. This long component could show up in a 13F filing and everyone might assume the fund is bullish, but this tells only part of the story because the bearish/short side of the position is not seen.
Having given that caveat, we believe that looking at groups of 13F filings can be revealing, especially when comparing one holding period to another. Below, let's take a look at the change in HD positions, for this latest batch of 13F filers:
In terms of shares owned, we count 21 of the above funds having increased existing HD positions from 12/31/2025 to 03/31/2026, with 23 having decreased their positions and 4 new positions. Worth noting is that Thryve Wealth Management LLC, included in this recent batch of 13F filers, exited HD common stock as of 03/31/2026.
Looking beyond these particular funds in this one batch of most recent filers, we tallied up the HD share count in the aggregate among all of the funds which held HD at the 03/31/2026 reporting period (out of the 6,135 we looked at in total). We then compared that number to the sum total of HD shares those same funds held back at the 12/31/2025 period, to see how the aggregate share count held by hedge funds has moved for HD. We found that between these two periods, funds increased their holdings by 98,533,597 shares in the aggregate, from 338,726,952 up to 437,260,549 for a share count increase of approximately 29.09%.
