(RTTNews) - The Home Depot (HD) on Tuesday announced that it has named Dr. Franziska Bell as Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, effective April 6.
In her new role, Bell will oversee the company's technology strategy, product management, data and artificial intelligence initiatives, with a focus on enhancing the customer and associate experience.
Bell most recently served as Chief Data, AI and Analytics Officer at Ford Motor Company, where she led AI transformation efforts. She has also held senior technology roles at BP, Uber Technologies and Toyota.

Home Depot Names Franziska Bell Chief Technology Officer

The Home Depot Inc. HD continues to face pressure in big-ticket discretionary categories, raising questions about whether the slowdown is cyclical or more structural. While fiscal 2025 comparable sales (comps) turned marginally positive, management acknowledged that demand for larger projects remains constrained, reflecting ongoing weakness in housing turnover and consumer confidence.
Big-ticket transactions above $1,000 grew modestly in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025, but this strength was largely driven by repair-and-maintenance categories such as plumbing, electrical and power tools rather than high-value discretionary remodels. This shift underscores a cautious consumer mindset, where spending is skewed toward essential upgrades rather than large-scale renovations.
Macro headwinds remain a key overhang. Elevated mortgage rates, high home prices and historically low housing turnover continue to suppress demand for major home improvement projects. Management highlighted that customers delaying home purchases are also postponing significant investments, opting instead for smaller, necessity-driven spending.
Importantly, the company has yet to see a meaningful rebound in big-ticket discretionary demand, which management views as a “telltale” indicator of a broader market recovery. Until housing activity improves and consumer confidence strengthens, this category is likely to remain under pressure.
That said, Home Depot continues to gain share through its Pro ecosystem, digital capabilities and supply chain investments. While the current slowdown appears cyclical, tied to macro and housing constraints, the timing of recovery in big-ticket demand remains uncertain, keeping near-term growth expectations measured.
How Do Lowe’s & Floor & Decor Fare Amid Big-Ticket Slowdown?
Peers like Lowe’s Companies Inc. LOW and Floor & Decor Holdings Inc. FND are also contending with a slowdown in big-ticket discretionary demand, as elevated rates and weak housing turnover pressure large project spending across the home improvement landscape.
Lowe’s faces pressure in big-ticket discretionary DIY projects, as cautious consumers delay large home investments amid elevated mortgage rates and housing market volatility. Management highlighted persistent weakness in high-value spending, despite stable demand in Pro, online and smaller repair-driven categories. While structural housing demand remains intact, the recovery in big-ticket items appears gradual, suggesting a cyclical slowdown rather than a lasting shift.
Floor & Decor is seeing pressure from a slowdown in large discretionary flooring projects, as softer existing home sales and tighter budgets push customers toward smaller jobs and lower-spec products. Home Depot Faces Big-Ticket Slowdown: Temporary or Trend?

The Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC) and S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) are in the red year to date. The Nasdaq Composite is down more than 10% from its high, while the S&P 500 is 7% off its high.
That puts the Nasdaq into a correction, which is a drop of at least 10% off a recent high but less than 20%. A sustained period in which an index is 20% below its high is known as a bear market. The S&P 500 could be headed there, too.

Big names, big drops
This year marks a noticeable step change from the megacap growth-driven market of 2023-2025. Instead of the largest companies pole-vaulting the broader market to new heights, many lower-weighted sectors, like energy, materials, industrials, utilities, and consumer staples, are holding up, while growth-focused sectors are falling.
Here's a look at the year-to-date performance of the top 10 largest S&P 500 stocks by market cap.
As you can see in the chart, almost all of them are already in their own individual corrections, and four out of 10 of the largest S&P 500 components are down by more than 20% from their 52-week highs. Investors who are heavily exposed to megacap, industry-leading companies may be down far more than the major indexes in 2026.
Corrections can be healthy
The market was extremely top-heavy heading into 2026 -- with roughly half of the S&P 500's market cap tied to just 20 stocks. Since many of these companies are valued more for their future earnings potential than what they are making today, the S&P 500's valuation was significantly higher than its historical average. In this vein, a correction isn't the worst thing in the world, and for some stocks, it may be justified.
One of the biggest mistakes investors can make during corrections and bear markets is assuming that, just because a stock is down a lot from its high, it's a good value. For starters, sometimes stocks can run up too far, too fast, leading investors to anchor to a price that was probably too inflated to begin with. A good example is Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR), which is in its own bear market, down 28% off its high.
The company is landing major high-profile deals and growing rapidly, but its stock trades at 122 times 2026 earnings estimates and 86 times 2027 estimates -- putting a lot of pressure on Palantir to keep delivering blowout results. While Palantir may be down from its highs, the stock isn't even remotely on sale and remains worth avoiding.
A far superior approach than chasing high-flying companies is to identify great businesses that don't need everything to go right to reward patient shareholders.
Buy beaten-down blue chip stocks hiding in plain sight
Companies with a long runway for earnings growth can become too cheap to ignore if they stay beaten down. For example, Nvidia and Meta Platforms are both cheaper than the S&P 500, based on forward earnings, so investors who believe both companies can keep growing are getting a chance to buy these stocks at a bargain. Granted, some investors may be concerned about the payoff of artificial intelligence (AI) investments.
The good news is that there are plenty of top-tier blue chip companies that are beaten down for reasons that have nothing to do with AI.
The Home Depot (NYSE: HD) is a great example, as it's a well-known nationwide powerhouse. Investors are concerned about declines in consumer spending and a prolonged housing market that has led to sluggish housing turnover and weak demand for home-improvement projects.
But Home Depot is a sleeping giant because it has made key acquisitions during the current downturn -- especially in the professional contractor space -- that could make it well-positioned to rapidly recover when the cycle turns.
Home Depot is out of favor because impatient investors don't want to wait for the cycle to turn. But long-term investors can step in and buy the stock for just 22.5 times earnings, which is dirt cheap, given that the valuation is based on trailing earnings from the worst of the current downturn. In the meantime, investors can collect a sizable 2.8% yield from Home Depot, which pays a highly reliable dividend and has raised its payout for 16 consecutive years.
Staying even-keeled during corrections
No one likes losing money. And if the Nasdaq and S&P 500 both fall into correction territory, it will likely mean even more short-term pain.
Smart investors can compound their long-term returns by buying excellent companies at compelling valuations -- especially those that are selling off due to fearful sentiment or cyclical factors. Home Depot is one such stock that's worthy of your consideration.

Home Depot (HD) Stock Moves -1.23%: What You Should Know

The Home Depot, Inc. HD, through its subsidiary SRS Distribution Inc., entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Mingledorff's, Inc., a well-established wholesale distributor of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment, parts and supplies. Mingledorff’s operates a network of 42 locations across five southeastern U.S. states and serves both residential and commercial customer segments.
This acquisition represents a strategic step forward for Home Depot as it continues to enhance its value proposition for Pro customers. SRS has already developed a strong position in specialty trade distribution, with exposure to roofing, interior and construction materials, landscaping products and pool supplies. By bringing Mingledorff’s into the portfolio, the company is entering HVAC distribution as a new vertical, significantly expanding its capabilities and service offerings.
Mingledorff’s contributes a robust distribution infrastructure, a broad and diversified product portfolio and long-standing customer relationships. These attributes are highly complementary to SRS’ existing platform. They are expected to strengthen the combined entity’s ability to capture greater market share within the fragmented building materials distribution industry. HVAC distribution alone is estimated to represent a $100 billion addressable market. This addition meaningfully expands the total addressable market for Home Depot to approximately $1.2 trillion.
Home Depot identified SRS as a critical growth engine and noted that the acquisition will support greater innovation and deeper engagement with its Pro customer base. SRS emphasized that the addition of HVAC distribution enhances its ability to provide a comprehensive, single-source solution across multiple product categories. Following the completion of the transaction, Mingledorff’s will continue to operate under its current leadership team within the SRS organization. The deal is expected to be closed in the second quarter of fiscal 2026.
How Do Lowe’s & Floor & Decor Fare?
Lowe's Companies, Inc. LOW in the fourth quarter of 2025, reported quarterly total sales of $20.6 billion, an increase from $18.6 billion in the prior-year quarter. Comparable sales for Lowe’s rose 1.3%, driven by continued growth across Pro, online and home services segments, along with strong holiday performance, reflecting steady demand and operational momentum.
Floor & Decor Holdings, Inc. FND reported fourth-quarter 2025 net sales of $1,129.7 million, reflecting a 2% increase from $1,107.4 million in the same period of fiscal 2024. However, Floor & Decor’s comparable store sales declined 4.8%, reflecting pressure from softness in existing home sales activity and a shift toward smaller flooring projects, indicating mixed performance during the quarter.

Home Depot to Acquire Mingledorff's, Expand Into HVAC Market

The Home Depot, Inc. HD and Floor & Decor Holdings, Inc. FND operate within the U.S. home improvement space, catering to both do-it-yourself (DIY) customers and professional (Pro) contractors. Both companies are currently navigating a similar macro environment, defined by subdued housing turnover, elevated interest rates and cautious discretionary spending, which continues to weigh on large remodeling projects. Despite these shared headwinds, their business models and growth strategies differ meaningfully.
Home Depot, with a market capitalization of about $330 billion, remains the industry leader. It operates 2,359 retail stores and more than 1,250 SRS locations across all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, 10 Canadian provinces and Mexico. The Case for HD
Home Depot’s long-term strategy is increasingly centered on strengthening its Pro ecosystem, supported by investments across distribution, capabilities and customer engagement. Through platforms like SRS and GMS, the company is expanding its presence in specialty building materials and creating cross-selling opportunities across multiple verticals. This strategy is further reinforced by the planned acquisition of HVAC distributor Mingledorff’s, which adds another vertical and significantly expands its total addressable market, positioning Home Depot to capture a greater share in the highly fragmented Pro supply chain.
The company is also advancing its digital capabilities to better serve the evolving needs of professional customers. Its enhanced Pro platform integrates project planning, purchasing and order management into a single interface, allowing contractors to manage complex workflows more efficiently. AI-powered tools, including material list generation, help Pros quickly estimate and organize projects, reducing manual effort and improving productivity across job sites.
Building on these capabilities, Home Depot is introducing industry-first innovations aimed at solving real operational pain points. The rollout of real-time delivery tracking for big and bulky materials provides minute-by-minute visibility into delivery routes and timing, enabling contractors to better coordinate labor and avoid costly delays. This focus on last-mile transparency and precision strengthens its value proposition and differentiates it within the Pro segment.
At the same time, the company continues to leverage its interconnected retail model, where stores and digital channels operate seamlessly together. With a significant portion of online orders fulfilled through stores and continued growth in digital engagement, Home Depot is improving convenience and driving higher customer interaction. Investments in delivery, fulfillment and customer experience are further enhancing its ability to serve both DIY and Pro customers effectively.
At the same time, performance reflects ongoing macro and operational pressures. Larger discretionary projects remain constrained, and margin performance has been impacted by mix shifts, acquisition-related costs and operating deleverage. Additionally, elevated mortgage rates, low housing turnover and persistent consumer uncertainty continue to limit project activity, particularly in big-ticket categories.
The Case for FND
Floor & Decor’s long-term growth strategy is anchored in aggressive store expansion and category specialization, enabling it to steadily gain share in the fragmented hard-surface flooring market.
The company opened 20 warehouse-format stores in fiscal 2025 and plans to open another 20 in 2026, progressing toward its long-term goal of 500 warehouse-format stores across the United States. Recent openings across markets such as Texas, New York, North Carolina and California reflect its continued geographic expansion and ability to penetrate both core and emerging markets, supporting sustained top-line growth.
A key pillar of its strategy is strengthening its Pro business, which represents approximately 50% of total sales and continues to grow faster than the overall business. Floor & Decor is investing in supply house capabilities, particularly in installation materials, while also working toward a relaunch of its Pro loyalty program with enhanced personalization and engagement features. These initiatives are designed to increase wallet share, improve retention and create higher switching costs, reinforcing its competitive positioning with professional customers.
The company is also focused on improving operational efficiency through targeted supply-chain and productivity initiatives. Efforts to enhance distribution center performance, reduce lead times and improve inventory flow are expected to strengthen in-stock levels and drive better inventory turns. At the same time, disciplined sourcing and diversification have enabled the company to manage tariff pressures effectively, supporting stable gross margin performance even as it continues to invest in its infrastructure.
Floor & Decor continues to differentiate itself through a value-driven merchandising strategy, offering a broad in-stock assortment of hard-surface flooring at competitive price points. The company is actively adapting to changing customer behavior, particularly the shift toward smaller projects and increased price sensitivity, by introducing targeted offerings and value-focused SKUs. Its ability to align product assortment with evolving demand trends positions it well to capture share, especially among cost-conscious Pro customers.
However, near-term pressures remain evident. Comparable store sales declined in the fourth quarter fiscal 2025, driven by lower transaction volumes and continued weakness in housing activity, alongside weather-related disruptions that impacted the early 2026 performance. While January showed some improvement, visibility remains limited, and demand recovery is expected to be gradual.

The Zacks Consensus Estimate for Home Depot’s current fiscal year indicates a 3.9% increase in sales and 2.3% growth in EPS from last year's actuals. The consensus forecast among Wall Street analysts says the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) will reach 8,338 in the next year, according to FactSet Research. That implies 28% upside from its current level of 6,506.
However, analysts anticipate more upside in two stock market sectors:

The consensus estimate says the information technology sector will reach 7,215 over the next year. That implies 39% upside from its current level of 5,203.
The consensus estimate says the consumer discretionary sector will reach 2,244 over the next year. That implies 30% upside from its current level of 1,725.
Investors can get exposure to those stock market sectors by purchasing shares of the Vanguard Information Technology ETF (NYSEMKT: VGT) and the Vanguard Consumer Discretionary ETF (NYSEMKT: VCR). Here are the important details.
1. Vanguard Information Technology ETF
The Vanguard Information Technology ETF measures the performance of 318 companies in the information technology sector, which includes three major segments: software and cloud services, technology hardware and equipment, and semiconductors and semiconductor manufacturing equipment.

Nvidia: 18.1%
Apple: 15.8%
Microsoft: 10.4%
Broadcom: 4.3%
Micron Technology: 2.4%
The Vanguard Information Technology ETF advanced 1,570% during the last two decades, which is equivalent to 15.1% annually. That is more than double the S&P 500's total return of 636% (10.5% annually). Indeed, the information technology sector was the best-performing stock market sector during the last decade due to the proliferation of cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI).
Risks to the information technology sector include cyclical revenue, especially in the semiconductor industry. Additionally, market sentiment surrounding artificial intelligence has been complicated lately. Investors are worried that hyperscalers are overspending on AI infrastructure, but they are also concerned that AI will disrupt the software industry.
Here's my take: This Vanguard index fund provides easy exposure to many companies likely to benefit from AI, which may be the most transformative technology in decades. The fund is also cheap with an expense ratio of 0.09%. My only reservation is concentration risk. Three companies account for 44% of its performance. Investors comfortable with that risk should consider buying a small position today.
2. Vanguard Consumer Discretionary ETF
The Vanguard Consumer Discretionary ETF measures the performance of 286 companies in the consumer discretionary sector, which spans manufacturing and services. The index fund is most heavily exposed to companies in the broadline retail, automobile manufacturing, restaurant, hotel and cruise line, and home improvement industries.

Amazon: 23.4%
Tesla: 16.6%
Home Depot: 5.3%
McDonald's 3.7%
TJX Companies: 2.7%
The Vanguard Consumer Discretionary ETF added 731% over the past two decades, which is equivalent to 11.1% annually. That beats the S&P 500's total return of 636% (10.5% annually). Indeed, the consumer discretionary sector was the second best performing stock market sector during the past 20 years because of the proliferation of e-commerce.
Risk to the consumer discretionary sector include tariffs and rising gasoline prices, both of which could reduce consumer spending, which is the most consequential driver of economic growth. "The sector is highly exposed to economic conditions and thus vulnerable to a slowing economy and reduced consumer confidence and spending," according to the Charles Schwab Center for Financial Research.
Here's my take: This Vanguard index fund is likely to perform well during periods of strong economic growth. It is relatively cheap with an expense ratio of 0.09%, but it is also very concentrated. Three companies account for 45% of its performance. Investors comfortable with that risk should consider buying a small position today.
I would start with a small position because the economy is in a somewhat precarious spot right now. Tariffs have coincided with a slowdown in GDP and jobs growth, and rising oil prices could push the economy into a recession, according to Moody's chief economist Mark Zandi. In that scenario, consumer discretionary stocks would probably fall more sharply than the broader S&P 500, as would technology stocks.

Buy 2 Vanguard Index Funds to Beat the S&P 500 in the Next Year, According to Wall Street

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Monday closed up +1.15%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) closed up +1.38%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed up +1.22%. June E-mini S&P futures (ESM26) rose +1.14%, and June E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQM26) rose +1.29%.
Stocks settled sharply higher on Monday as crude oil prices plunged more than -10% after President Trump said strikes against Iranian energy infrastructure and power plants would be postponed for five days following the start of talks with Iran to end the war. Mr. Trump said the US held productive talks on a comprehensive resolution of hostilities in the Middle East and that the discussion would continue throughout the week.

Stocks fell back from their best levels Monday afternoon when a statement was released from a military adviser to Iranian Supreme Leader, Mohsen Rezaee, that said the war will continue until all damages to Iran are compensated, all economic sanctions are lifted, and legal international guarantees are obtained to prevent US interference in Iran.
Global bond yields fell from their highs on Monday and turned lower, a supportive factor for stocks, on news of a possible end to the war in Iran. Bond yields had risen on concerns that soaring energy prices from the Iran war would stoke inflation. The 10-year T-note yield fell from an 8-month high on Monday at 4.44% and fell -5 bp to 4.33%. Also, the 10-year German Bund yield fell from a 14.75-year high of 3.08%, and the 10-year UK Gilt yield fell from a 17.75-year high of 5.12%.
Stock index futures initially fell sharply in overnight trading after President Trump gave Iran until Monday evening to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. President Trump on Saturday issued a 48-hour ultimatum for Iran to "fully open" the Strait of Hormuz or the US will obliterate Iran’s various power stations. The ultimatum, which expires at 7:44 p.m. Eastern time on Monday, was met with harsh rhetoric from Iran, with one senior Iranian official saying that if such an attack were to occur, the headquarters and assets of financial entities that buy US Treasury bonds are "legitimate targets" for attack. Iran also said that it would mine the “entire Persian Gulf” and block all access routes through the Strait if its power plants were attacked.
Iran carried out fresh strikes across the Persian Gulf over the weekend, with the UAE reporting drone and missile attacks on Monday. The International Energy Agency said that more than 40 energy sites across nine countries in the Middle East have been "severely or very severely" damaged, potentially prolonging disruptions to global supply chains once the war in Iran ends.
Crude oil prices (CLK26) remain high despite attempts to boost global supplies. The IEA on March 11 released 400 million barrels from emergency oil stockpiles and said the war against Iran is disrupting 7.5% of global oil supply, and the conflict will cut global oil supply by 8 million bpd this month. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the world’s oil and natural gas flows, has choked off oil and gas flows due to Iran’s attacks on shipping in the waterway and forced Gulf producers to cut output because they can’t export from the region. Iran has attacked about 20 vessels in the Persian Gulf and near Hormuz since the conflict began. Goldman Sachs warns that crude prices could exceed the 2008 record high of close to $150 a barrel if flows through the Strait of Hormuz remain depressed through March.
The markets are discounting an 8% chance for a +25 bp FOMC rate hike at the April 28-29 policy meeting.
Overseas stock markets settled mixed on Monday. The Euro Stoxx 50 recovered from a 6-month low and closed up +1.33%. China's Shanghai Composite fell to a 6-month low and closed down -3.63%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 tumbled to a 2.75-month low and closed down -3.48%.
Interest Rates
June 10-year T-notes (ZNM6) on Monday closed up by +13.5 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield fell -5.2 bp to 4.328%. June T-notes recovered from a 9.5-month nearest-futures low on Monday, and the 10-year T-note yield fell from an 8-month high of 4.441%. T-notes recovered from overnight losses and moved higher today after WTI crude oil prices fell more than -10% when President Trump postponed strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure for five days, pending talks to end the war in Iran. The 10-year breakeven inflation rate fell to a 1.5-week low of 2.311% on Monday, a supportive factor for T-notes.
T-note yields have risen sharply over the past three weeks on concern that surging energy prices from the Iran war will boost inflation and even force the Fed to tighten monetary policy.
European government bond yields gave up early gains on Monday and moved lower. The 10-year German bund yield fell from a 14.75-year high of 3.077% and finished down -3.9 bp to 3.005%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell from a 17.75-year high of 5.121% and finished down -7.4 bp to 4.02-%.
The Eurozone Mar consumer confidence index fell -4.0 to a nearly 2.5-year low of -16.3, weaker than expectations of -14.2.
ECB Governing Council member Peter Kazimir said, "The ECB can do little about the inflation spike in the next few months, but if we judge that the risk of inflation remaining above our target for a prolonged period is significant, we will act with appropriate forcefulness to bring inflation back down to our target."
Swaps are discounting a 68% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on April 30.
US Stock Movers
The Magnificent Seven technology stocks moved higher on Monday, a supportive factor for the overall market. Tesla (TSLA) closed up more than +3%, and Amazon.com (AMZN) closed up more than +2%. Also, Apple (AAPL), Meta Platforms (META), and Nvidia (NVDA) closed up more than +1%. In addition, Alphabet (GOOGL) closed up +0.35%, and Microsoft (MSFT) closed up +0.30%.
Airline and cruise line stocks rallied on Monday as crude oil prices sank by more than 10%, potentially lowering fuel costs and boosting corporate profits. Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) closed up more than +6%, and Carnival (CCL) and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCL) closed up more than +5%. Also, United Airlines Holdings (UAL) and Alaska Air Group (ALK) closed up more than +4%, and American Airlines Group (AAL) closed up more than +3%. Home builders and building suppliers gained on Monday as the 10-year T-note yield fell -5 bp, a supportive factor for housing demand. Builders Firstsource (BLDR), DR Horton (DHI), Toll Brothers (TOL), and KB Home (KBH) closed up more than +4%. Also, PulteGroup (PHM), Home Depot (HD), and Lennar (LEN) closed up more than +3%.
Apogee Therapeutics (APGE) closed up more than +20% after saying data from a mid-stage trial showed its experimental therapy deepened responses in patients with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis.
