The Dow is up another +37 points at this hour, the S&P 500 is +6 points and the Nasdaq is +45 to 23,851. Only the small-cap Russell 2000 is down a marginal -0.4 points at this hour, though it leads the major indexes over the last five trading days.
We’re not seeing a ton of new data out ahead of the opening bell — certainly nothing like last week’s Jobs Week — but we do look forward to Apple’s AAPL release of the iPhone 17 later today. Expectations there for are an ultra-thin model and some charging/battery upgrades, but not much in the way of AI technology.
Small-Business Optimism Ticks Higher
Early this morning, the NFIB Small Business Optimism Index for August came in half a point higher to 100.8, remaining above the 52-year average of 98.0. Over two-thirds of small business owners find conditions to be either excellent (+14%) or good (+54%), while only 4% think they are poor. Labor Quality was the top problem among small business owners in the survey, with 32% having open jobs they are unable to fill.
FuelCell Energy Beats Estimates in Q3
Small-cap renewable energy server FuelCell Energy FCEL posted big positive surprises in its fiscal Q3 report out this morning, reporting a loss of -95 cents per share for a +40% beat, on revenues of $46.7 million, which amounts to +97% sales growth year over year. Shares are up +2.6% in pre-market trading, though still down -50% year to date.
What to Expect from the Stock Market Today
Aside from the aforementioned Apple news on the updated iPhone, a year’s worth of jobs revisions from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) is expected after today’s open. These adjustments will take into account all BLS employment tallies from April 2024 to March 2025. Analysts anticipate revisions to be in the several hundreds of thousands.
Recall a year ago, only weeks ahead of the 2024 General Election: BLS jobs revisions came in a whopping -818K, adjusting downward the accomplishments of the labor market over the prior year. This year, BLS reports have entered the political realm thanks to President Trump’s suggestion that previous jobs numbers were not “real.” So aside from whatever the BLS finds, expect commentary from the White House today, as well.
We also look forward to fiscal Q1 earnings from Oracle ORCL after today’s close. Expectations are for +5.76% earnings growth to $1.47 per share in the quarter, on +12.8% revenue growth from a year ago to $15.01 billion. The Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) Oracle is looking for its second-straight earnings beat, following two quarters of slight misses.
Also reporting earnings this afternoon are microchip designer Synopsys SNPS and meme-stock extraordinaire GameStop GME. GameStop is projected to bring in huge +1800% positive earnings growth, while Synopsys expects a mere +12% in earnings growth year over year.

So far this year, XRP has outperformed both Bitcoin and Ethereum.
Much of its strength is tied to perceived value following a series of favorable regulatory developments for its issuer, Ripple.

While 2025 has been rather turbulent for the equity markets, one asset class has defied the panic-driven selling and gloomy macroeconomic outlooks: cryptocurrency.

Perhaps surprisingly, the smallest of the trio, XRP, leads the pack with a gain of 50% so far this year. Ethereum's return of 35% is impressive in its own right, yet momentum and headlines appear to be shifting toward new contenders like XRP.
Below, I'll outline three catalysts that could rekindle investor enthusiasm for Ethereum -- and potentially drive meaningful price appreciation as the digital asset narrative continues to unfold.
1. Don't sleep on stablecoins
XRP is best viewed as a niche-focused vehicle facilitating cross-border transactions. Ethereum, by contrast, underpins a broader ecosystem of decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols -- spanning trading, lending, smart contracts, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and, notably, stablecoins.
Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies that are pegged to the value of fiat currencies, such as the U.S. dollar. Roughly 50% of stablecoin volume passes through Ethereum's blockchain -- underscoring the network's strong appeal for these emerging financial instruments. Major enterprises including Shopify, Visa, Walmart, PayPal, and Stripe already support or are consider supporting stablecoins as a form of payment.
This growing adoption could make stablecoins a key driver in Ethereum's evolution into a pillar supporting mainstream financial services. Meanwhile, XRP, while useful, lacks the same reach in commercial applications powered by digital assets.
2. The impact of spot ETFs
One of the challenges of investing in cryptocurrency is the complexity of managing a digital wallet or using exchanges like Coinbase.
During the past year, however, the Securities and Exchange Commission has approved several spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs). These products give investors exposure to Bitcoin through trusted custodians such as BlackRock and Cathie Wood's Ark Invest, eliminating the need for the often time-consuming setup and stringent security protocols of buying and storing crypto directly.
The success of spot Bitcoin ETFs has unlocked a new wave of liquidity from both institutional and retail investors -- a dynamic that could be even more powerful for spot Ethereum ETFs.
Ethereum offers a unique combination of capital appreciation potential and income generation through staking to earn interest-like returns -- making these ETFs attractive to both growth investors and those seeking passive income.
3. The evolution of corporate and sovereign treasury strategy
In recent years, several corporations -- most notably Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) and GameStop -- have added Bitcoin to their balance sheets, supplementing traditional liquidity assets such as cash and short-term investments. Likewise, a number of sovereign nations have begun exploring the idea of strategic Bitcoin reserves as part of their global treasury strategies.
Ethereum could follow a similar trajectory. With its income-generating staking rewards and potential for price appreciation as blockchain technology becomes further integrated into the global financial system, Ethereum stands out as a strong complement to Bitcoin holdings. For corporate chief financial officers and government treasury managers, incorporating Ethereum alongside Bitcoin could improve diversification while capturing the growth potential of DeFi.
Should you buy Ethereum instead of XRP?
Ethereum's role as infrastructure supporting DeFi and its accelerating blockchain adoption make it a more compelling opportunity than its narrowly focused peer XRP. That said, Ethereum still faces stiff competition from rival blockchains such as Solana, Cardano, and Tron.
Given these dynamics, I view Ethereum as offering a stronger balance of utility and upside potential than XRP but also as having ongoing volatility likely to remain in the short to medium term.
For this reason, I think that accumulating Ethereum at varying price points over a long time -- through a disciplined dollar-cost averaging approach -- is the most prudent investment strategy.

U.S. revenues, which account for the majority of the company's total revenues, declined 12.9% to $537.5 million, led by changing consumer behavior and a tough retail environment. In Canada, sales slid 10.3% to $38.2 million, and the company subsequently exited the market entirely. European operations fared even worse, plunging 47.4% to $74.8 million, as restructuring initiatives there took their toll.
Despite aggressive cost-cutting, GameStop’s operations remain unprofitable at the core level, with an operating loss of $10.8 million for the fiscal first quarter. Store-related costs continue to weigh heavily on the business, and the company’s fixed-cost structure leaves little room to adjust to the sharp declines in revenue and changing consumer trends.
Overall, steep category declines, regional market exits, and persistent operating losses paint a troubling picture of the company. GME’s Strategy to Navigate Market Shifts
GameStop is in the midst of a strategic transformation, evolving from a traditional video game retailer into a technology-driven company that connects customers to games, entertainment, and a diverse assortment of lifestyle products. The company has been steadily strengthening its infrastructure and technology capabilities, aligning its operations with shifting consumer preferences and the growing digitization of both gaming and retail.
One of the standout achievements in the fiscal first quarter of 2025 was the remarkable growth of GameStop’s collectibles business. Collectibles revenues jumped 54.6% year over year to $211.5 million in fiscal first quarter, now representing 28.9% of total sales compared with 15.5% a year ago. The impacts of these efforts were clearly visible in the company’s bottom-line performance. Adjusted net income rose to $83.1 million from an adjusted loss of $36.7 million, while adjusted EBITDA improved to $38.6 million and adjusted operating income reached $27.5 million. These results reflect the success of GameStop’s restructuring initiatives and its progress toward sustainable profitability.
In addition to operational improvements, the company has significantly strengthened its financial position. At the end of the quarter, GameStop held more than $6.4 billion in cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities, up from $1 billion a year earlier, supported by a strong free cash flow of $189.6 million and more efficient inventory management.

GameStop Stock Falls 10% in 3 Months: Time to Buy, Hold or Sell?

GameStop Corp. GME delivered mixed regional results in the first quarter of fiscal 2025, as strength in the United States was overshadowed by continued weakness in international markets. Total net sales fell 16.9% year over year to $732.4 million from $881.8 million, reflecting the company’s ongoing restructuring efforts and challenges abroad.
The U.S. business remained the company’s cornerstone, posting net sales of $537.5 million, down 12.9% from the prior year. Despite lower sales, cost reductions and improved efficiency drove a turnaround to $33.6 million in operating income from a $25.3-million loss a year earlier. This marked improvement highlights the domestic market’s importance, with the United States now accounting for 73.4% of total sales.
International operations, however, continued to drag the overall performance. In Canada, net sales declined 10.3% year over year to $38.2 million, and the operating loss deepened to $22.2 million due to $18.3 million in impairment charges tied to the company’s exit from the market, which was completed after the quarter ended.
Europe faced even greater pressure, with sales plunging 47.4% to $74.8 million and losses widening to $16.8 million, weighed down by $17.2 million in impairment costs and falling demand. Australia showed modest improvement, as sales rose 2.9% to $81.9 million while operating losses narrowed slightly to $5.4 million.
These results underscore the urgent need for GameStop to focus on profitable markets and exit or restructure underperforming ones. The U.S. turnaround offers a foundation, but remaining international losses highlight the importance of decisive action to sustain its recovery and adapt to changing market dynamics.
