Intuitive Surgical is up more than +16% after boosting its worldwide Da Vinci procedure growth forecast for the whole year. Also, Capital One Financial is up more than +3% after reporting better-than-expected Q3 adjusted EPS.

US MBA mortgage applications fell -0.3% in the week ended October 17, with the purchase mortgage sub-index down -5.2% and the refinancing sub-index up +4.0%. The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage fell -5 bp to 6.37% from 6.42% in the prior week.
The markets are focusing on progress in US-China trade talks, as President Trump reiterated his threat on Monday to boost tariffs on Chinese goods "if there isn't a deal" by November 1. President Trump is scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping next week on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference in South Korea.
The shutdown of the US government continues into its fourth week, weighing on market sentiment and delaying key economic reports. The government shutdown means delays in the release of government reports, including the last three weeks of weekly initial unemployment claims and the September payroll report. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) said the September consumer price report, which was initially scheduled to be released last Wednesday, will be released this Friday. The White House has warned that if the government shutdown lingers, it would trigger widespread dismissals of employees in government programs that don't align with President Trump's priorities. Bloomberg Economics estimates that 640,000 federal workers will be furloughed during the shutdown, which would expand jobless claims and push the unemployment rate up to 4.7%.
The markets this week will focus on earnings results as the Q3 earnings season continues. Rising corporate earnings expectations are a bullish backdrop for stocks. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, 85% of the S&P 500 companies that have reported so far have beaten forecasts, on course for the best quarter since 2021. Also, more than 22% of companies in the S&P 500 that have provided guidance for their Q3 earnings results are expected to beat analysts' expectations, the highest in a year. However, Q3 profits are expected to have risen by +7.2% y/y, the smallest increase in two years. Also, Q3 sales growth is projected to slow to +5.9% y/y from 6.4% in Q2.
The markets are pricing in a 97% chance of a -25 bp rate cut at the next FOMC meeting on Oct 28-29.
Overseas stock markets are lower today. The Euro Stoxx 50 is down -0.43%. China's Shanghai Composite closed down -0.07%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 closed down -0.02%.
Interest Rates
December 10-year T-notes (ZNZ5) today are down -3 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is up +1.0 bp to 3.972%. Supply pressures are weighing on T-notes as the Treasury will auction $13 billion of 20-year T-bonds later today. Losses in T-notes are contained due to the ongoing US government shutdown, which could lead to additional job losses, reduced consumer spending, and a weakened US economy, potentially allowing the Fed to continue cutting interest rates.
European government bond yields are mixed today. The 10-year German bund yield is up +1.6 bp to 2.568%. The 10-year UK gilt yield dropped to a 6.5-month low of 4.369% and is down -5.5 bp to 4.422%.
UK Sep CPI rose +3.8% y/y, unchanged from Aug and weaker than expectations of +4.0% y/y. Sep core CPI unexpectedly eased to +3.5% y/y from +3.6% y/y in Aug, weaker than expectations of +3.7% y/y.
ECB Vice President Guindos said, "The current ECB interest-rate level is adequate as the path forward for inflation looks positive," and risks to the outlook for consumer-price growth are balanced.
Swaps are discounting a 2% chance for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on October 30.
US Stock Movers
Netflix (NFLX) is down more than -9% to lead losers in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 after reporting Q3 EPS of $5.87, well below the consensus of $6.94.
Texas Instruments (TXN) is down more than -5% to lead chipmakers lower after forecasting Q4 revenue of $4.22 billion to $4.58 billion, with the midpoint below the consensus of $4.50 billion. Also, Microchip Technology (MCHP), Lam Research (LRCX), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), and Intel (INTC) are down more than -3%. In addition, Analog Devices (ADI), Marvell Technology (MRVL), KLA Corp (KLAC), ARM Holdings Plc (ARM), and ON Semiconductor (ON) are down more than -2%.
Cryptocurrency-exposed stocks are sliding today, with the price of Bitcoin down more than -2%. As a result, Coinbase Global (COIN), Galaxy Digital (GLXY), MARA Holdings (MARA), Riot Platforms (RIOT), and Strategy (MSTR) are down more than -3%.
AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) is down more than -12% after announcing a private offering of $850 million of convertible senior notes due 2036.
GE Vernova (GEV) is down more than -8% after reporting Q3 EPS of $1.64, weaker than the consensus of $1.86.
Manhattan Associates (MANH) is down more than -5% after reporting that its Q3 remaining performance obligations (RPOs) amounted to $2.077 billion, below the consensus of $2.088 billion.
Mattel (MAT) is down more than -2% after reporting Q3 net sales of $1.74 billion, weaker than the consensus of $1.84 billion.
Commercial Metals (CMC) is down more than -2% after Jeffries downgraded the stock to hold from buy.
Intuitive Surgical (ISRG) is up more than +16% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 after boosting its worldwide Da Vinci procedure growth forecast for the whole year.
Pegasystems (PEGA) is up more than +10% after reporting Q3 revenue of $381.4 million, well above the consensus of $351.8 million.

Stocks Slide on Weakness in Chipmakers

Pre-market futures are flattish at this hour, but with a downward bias. The Dow is coming off a record closing high Tuesday, and Q3 earnings reports released yesterday afternoon did not quite have the positive sheen we’ve seen elsewhere this far into earnings season. The Dow is currently down -9 points, the S&P 500 is +3, the Nasdaq -38 and the small-cap Russell 2000 is -9 points at this hour.
Fed Governor Michael Barr will make a couple of appearances later today — one week ahead of the next monetary policy decision from the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC). Thus, we’re also closing in on the “blackout period,” where Fed members keep mum on their opinions about the state of the economy. Nearly 100% of analysts believe another 25 basis-point (bps) rate cut is in the cards for next Wednesday, which would take the Fed funds rate down to 3.75-4.00%.
Q3 Earnings Ahead of the Bell: T, TMO, GEV & More
AT&T T reported Q3 earnings ahead of today’s open, missing on its bottom line by a penny to 54 cents per share. Revenues in the quarter were similarly short, -0.81% from estimates to $30.71 billion. Shares are down -1.6% at this hour on the news; the stock is still up +13% year to date — basically in-line with the S&P 500.
Medical equipment major Thermo Fisher TMO posted beats on both top and bottom lines for its Q3 report this morning, with earnings of $5.79 per share well ahead of the $5.50 in the Zacks consensus. This amounts to a positive earning surprise of +5.27%. Revenues topped expectations by +2% to $11.12 billion in the quarter. Shares are up +2% on the news this morning, but still underperforming the S&P year to date.
A day after GE Aerospace GE strongly outperformed estimates, its energy-oriented spinoff GE Vernova GEV came out with a mixed picture in Q3: earnings of $1.64 per share missed the Zacks consensus $1.78 by -7.87% (though much higher than the 35 cents per share reported a year ago), on revenues of $9.97 billion — +8.62% higher than anticipated. Shares are up another +3.8% on the news, adding to the boffo +78% growth year to date.
Canadian metals company Teck Resources TECK had perhaps the strongest Q3 earnings report of the morning, with earnings of 55 cents per share surpassing the 39 cents projected by +41%, on revenues of $2.46 billion which surged past the Zacks consensus by +14.3%. This is perhaps a less familiar stock to track, but with rare earth negotiations with China remaining a sticking point, Teck may find itself with a higher level of relevancy.
What to Expect from Today’s Stock Market
Big Q3 earnings reports are expected after the closing bell today, including Tesla TSLA, which is expected to fetch negative earnings per share to the tune of -26.4% year over year, but +5% on revenues. Shares have rebounded somewhat from their much-maligned levels in early April, which was right around the time CEO Elon Musk was seeing his White House tenure coming to an end. Shares are +9.6% year to date, but flat ahead of today’s open.
We’ll also get IBM IBM earnings after today’s close, with the international tech giant looking to add to its +28% gains since the start of the year. Earnings are expected to come in +6% higher, with +7.57% on the revenues side for the quarter. Also, Southwest Airlines LUV fights a tough year-over-year comp, staring down -93% earnings growth in the quarter on +1.44% expected in revenues.

GE Vernova Q3 25 Earnings Conference Call At 7:30 AM ET

Markets moved through the day roughly flat — actually, more like a reflection in the pond: while the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq were modestly on either side of the zero-balance, the Dow finished the session up +0.47% and the small-cap Russell 2000 was -0.49%. The Russell is still off last week’s highs, even as it outperformed the other major indexes in the past couple trading days.
Bond yields are tacking down slightly — +3.96% on the 10-year and +3.46% on the 2-year — which makes sense when we price in another interest rate cut mid-next week. But it’s really Q3 earnings season that’s driving the bus, with mostly better-than-expected results ahead of today’s opening bell.
Q3 Earnings Roundup After the Bell: NFLX, TXN, MAT
We can’t really say the same for the companies reporting after today’s close; challenges are seeing guidance numbers lower on the bottom end at a couple choice firms with Q3 figures out this afternoon.
Netflix NFLX missed earnings expectations by more than a dollar — $5.87 per share versus the Zacks consensus $6.89, though still above the year-ago $5.40 per share. An unexpected expense related to a dispute with tax authorities in Brazil cut notably into operating margin, leading to the earnings miss. Revenues of $11.51 billion were slightly below the $11.52 billion estimate.
Shares are down -5% on this news, ending its streak of 6-straight quarterly earnings beats. But on the conference call, Netflix may speak on some possible acquisitions, including European Champions League soccer match broadcasts. Less likely, but still possible, is whether Netflix may be in the bidding to acquire Warner Brothers Discovery WBD, which has put itself up for sale earlier today.
Texas Instruments TXN shares are jumping around following its Q3 earnings report after today’s close, but are currently down -7% at this hour. Earnings of $1.48 per share beat the Zacks consensus by a penny, on revenues of $4.74 billion — bettering the $4.65 billion anticipated and +7% quarter over quarter. But a lowering bottom-end of guidance on both earnings and sales next quarter has taken some of the wind out of its sails.
Mattel MAT shares are -5% after being down double digits as an immediate reaction to the Q3 report. Earnings of 89 cents per share missed the $1.05 in the Zacks consensus, on $1.74 billion in quarterly sales which came up short of the $1.81 billion expected. Adjusted gross margins fell year over year, and although the company did not cite tariff realities as the culprit, they would stand to reason. Guidance remained in-line and the company expects a strong holiday season.
What to Expect from the Stock Market Tomorrow
Once again, we will not see any new economic reports on Wednesday, but plenty of earnings releases before and after the bell. AT&T T and GE Vernova GEV report ahead of the open and Tesla TSLA, IBM IBM and Southwest Airlines LUV following the close. As we see in today’s after-market reports, tariff-beholden companies may have a tougher time beating estimates than the early Q3 reports from the biggest Wall Street banks.

GE Aerospace GE reported third-quarter 2025 results, wherein both revenues and earnings surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate.
It is worth noting that in April 2024, GE Aerospace emerged as a separate public company, following the spin-off of GE Vernova Inc. GEV from General Electric.

The company’s third-quarter adjusted earnings were $1.66 per share, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.46. The bottom line surged 44% year over year.
Total revenues were $12.2 billion, indicating a year-over-year increase of 24%. Total orders grew 2% on a year-over-year basis to $12.8 billion.
Adjusted revenues were $11.3 billion, marking a year-over-year increase of 26%. The metric beat the consensus estimate of $10.3 billion.

Revenues from the company’s Commercial Engines & Services business jumped 27% year over year to $8.88 billion. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for the business’ revenues was pegged at $8.25 billion. The results were driven by higher shop visit work scope, increased revenues from spare parts and equipment and favorable pricing. Total orders in the segment rose 5% year over year to $10.3 billion.

GE Aerospace’s cost of sales (comprising costs of equipment and services sold) surged 24.7% year over year at $7.76 billion. Selling, general and administrative expenses decreased 10.2% year over year to $1.2 billion. Research and development expenses totaled $415 million, reflecting a year-over-year rise of 25.4%.
GE Aerospace’s operating profit (non-GAAP) was $2.3 billion, up 26.5% year over year. The margin was 20.3%, relatively stable year over year.

Exiting the third quarter of 2025, GE Aerospace had cash, cash equivalents and restricted cash of $12.5 billion compared with $13.6 billion at the end of December 2024. The company’s long-term borrowings were $18.8 billion compared with $17.2 billion at the end of December 2024.
In the third quarter, the adjusted free cash flow was $2.36 billion compared with $1.82 billion in the year-ago quarter.
In the same quarter, GE rewarded its shareholders with a dividend payment of $0.4 billion. The company repurchased shares for approximately $1.8 billion during the same period.
GE’s Outlook
For 2025, GE expects adjusted revenues to grow in the high-teens range from the year-ago period's actual. Operating profit is estimated to be in the band of $8.65-$8.85 billion. Adjusted earnings are predicted to be in the range of $6.00-$6.20 per share. The free cash flow is anticipated to be in the band of $7.1-$7.3 billion, with the conversion rate projected to be more than 100%.
GE Aerospace expects the Commercial Engines & Services segment’s revenues to grow in the low twenties range, whereas operating profit is anticipated to be in the band of $8.45-$8.65 billion. For the Defense & Propulsion Technologies segment, revenues are projected to increase in the high-single-digit range, whereas operating profit is anticipated to be in the band of $1.2-$1.3 billion.
