Speaking to a Stanford University computer science class in May, Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang raised eyebrows by saying, "The amount of energy that we need for [AI] computing is likely probably 1,000 times more than we currently have." He didn't add any additional detail to his mental math and even conceded, "I wouldn't be surprised if we're off by a couple orders of magnitude." If his goal was simply to provide some tangible perspective -- for effect -- on what the energy industry needs to accomplish in the foreseeable future, then mission accomplished.
The projected scope makes sense. Also in May, Goldman Sachs predicted that the power U.S. data centers alone would need would more than double between 2025 and 2027, from 31 gigawatts (GW) to 66 GW. At peak usage, this would push the domestic AI industry's consumption from just over 4% of the nation's total power output to well over 8%. Extending this trend, Bloom Energy predicts artificial intelligence could be using up to 12% of the United States' produced electricity by 2030, and it would still just be getting started.

The same dynamics are taking shape outside of the U.S. as well, of course.
It's an opportunity, to be sure, but only for companies already ready to capitalize on it. To this end, here's a closer look at three industrial names already seeing the upside of the surge in power demand.
1. GE Vernova
GE Vernova (NYSE: GEV) is the former power-generation arm of industrial titan General Electric, which began splitting itself into smaller, more manageable pieces in 2021. This particular offshoot makes everything from wind turbines to nuclear reactors to hydropower systems to power grid solutions.Its red-hot equipment right now, however, is natural gas turbines.
Originally intended for utility companies, these power plants -- capable of producing anywhere from 34.5 megawatts to 571 megawatts of power -- are ideally suited to power data centers due to their scalability, ability to be throttled as needed, and relatively small footprint. Just as important, on-premises power generation means AI data center owners/operators don't need to wait for time-consuming (and often costly) connections to a power grid. That's why PwC believes the United States' data center-driven demand for natural gas could easily quintuple between last year and 2035, with an outside chance of further growth taking shape even sooner.
GE Vernova won't supply all the turbines linked to this surge in demand for natural gas. With a companywide backlog of $176 billion (nearly two-thirds of which is gas turbine-related) versus 2026's expected revenue of about $46 billion, however -- and a gas power equipment backlog that grew from 100 GW to 116 GW in Q2 alone - this company's certainly going to meet a huge chunk of this demand.
2. Vistra
Technically speaking, Vistra (NYSE: VST) isn't an industrial company. It's categorized as a power utility, though even by utility-stock standards, it's not exactly your typical power company. While it does directly provide electricity to about 5 million residential and business customers, Vistra's core business is generating and then selling electricity on a wholesale basis to other utility companies sharing the same grid.
The company's now making the most of this flexibility too. For instance, rather than merely connecting new artificial intelligence data centers to existing grid infrastructure and treating them like any other customer, Vistra is now entering long-term power purchase agreements directly with institutions. Early this year, the company announced it had inked long-term deals with Amazon and Facebook parent Meta Platforms to supply both tech companies with the electricity needed for existing and new AI data centers.
Such arrangements still account for only a relatively small part of the company's total business. In that these long-term agreements allow Vistra to make capital investments -- particularly in nuclear power -- with a reasonably assured return on the investment, the company can add power production capacity with the confidence that ultimately allows it to build more efficient infrastructure.
In other words, it's a win-win. That's why you shouldn't be surprised to see more such dealmaking in the future, particularly from Vistra, which has already shown its interest in custom-designed power provision solutions.
3. Caterpillar
Finally, add Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT) -- yes, the construction equipment company -- to your list of stocks that will benefit from the AI industry's exploding demand for electricity. It's already benefiting, in fact.
You know it best as a maker of bulldozers, backhoes, and dump trucks. And that's still a huge part of its business to be sure. Largely overlooked, though, is that Caterpillar also manufactures high-capacity mobile diesel and gas generators, battery-based energy storage systems, and more, all of which are proving to be much-needed stopgap solutions while data center owners and operators are waiting on more permanent equipment. Outfits including Space Exploration Technologies and Microsoft (through Nscale) are utilizing off-grid generators to power some of their AI data centers.
To this end, while all of Caterpillar's business lines grew last year, its power generation arm, which provides these generators, experienced company-leading growth of roughly 30%. The company expects this business to double between 2025 and 2030, and S&P Global doesn't exactly disagree with this outlook. It's looking for Caterpillar's power and energy division to grow another 17% this year -- from last year's revenue of $33.4 billion -- en route to $54.8 billion in annual revenue by 2030.

Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), under Satya Nadella, is leaning hard into artificial intelligence. Just six major tech companies have commitments of $862 billion for future AI data centers, with Nadella's Microsoft accounting for nearly 23% of the total, according to Bloomberg. This is good news for Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT).
Power is a limiting factor for AI
Artificial intelligence is just a fancy computer program. So electricity is a necessity. However, the speed of the AI infrastructure build-out has made it difficult to secure power connections for all the data centers under construction. Nadella has gotten creative, recently inking a deal with Chevron (NYSE: CVX), which will operate a natural gas power plant supplying power to a Microsoft data center.

While most of the turbines for this power plant are coming from GE Vernova (NYSE: GEV), Caterpillar will also be a key supplier, too. Cat's generators can be used for backup power or as a main power source, quickly getting data centers up and running. But that's just one data center; there are many more that need power. And that makes CEO Joe Creed's Caterpillar an AI play.
Good news and bad news for Caterpillar investors
Caterpillar ended the first quarter of 2026 with a record backlog of $63 billion, up nearly 80% year over year. That basically represents future sales, so Cat's got a strong runway for growth ahead. And it is already doing quite well, with first-quarter 2026 sales up 22%. Shareholders should be very pleased.
But if you are considering buying Caterpillar right now, you need to pause for a second. The stock price has doubled in a year, even after a recent 17% drawdown. And, despite that drawdown, the stock's price-to-sales and price-to-earnings ratios are both more than twice their five-year averages. So investors are well aware of the success and opportunity here.
Don't rush to buy Cat
Caterpillar is an iconic industrial giant that is doing well right now. Given its ability to provide power to AI companies like Microsoft, the business appears to have a strong foundation for growth. But overpaying for a good company can turn it into a bad investment. If you bought Cat a year ago, you should be very pleased. If you are looking at it today, you may want to keep it on your wishlist for now.

Looking at options trading activity among components of the S&P 500 index, there is noteworthy activity today in First Solar Inc (Symbol: FSLR), where a total volume of 10,698 contracts has been traded thus far today, a contract volume which is representative of approximately 1.1 million underlying shares (given that every 1 contract represents 100 underlying shares). That number works out to 60.2% of FSLR's average daily trading volume over the past month, of 1.8 million shares. Especially high volume was seen for the $340 strike call option expiring June 17, 2027, with 1,979 contracts trading so far today, representing approximately 197,900 underlying shares of FSLR. Revenue grew 22% while orders skyrocketed 88% to $24.2 billion. As a result, GE Vernova's backlog reached a record $176 billion. Free cash flow also increased to $5.1 billion. The company's management raised its full-year guidance on both revenue and free cash flow.

The wind segment's revenue decreased 10%, with orders falling another 40%. Wind is expected to lose GE Vernova about $400 million this year. Weak demand, rising expenses, and tariffs are the main culprits.
While the wind story isn't good, it's an increasingly irrelevant piece of a much brighter narrative for GE Vernova. The company's power and electrification divisions are rapidly expanding and are the main drivers of revenue and future growth. Investors selling GE Vernova because of a struggling wind segment are missing a bigger opportunity. Growth in AI-related infrastructure needs will continue for several more years, and GE Vernova is well-positioned to capture much of it.
If anything, this slight price dip is an opportunity for investors to buy the stock for the long term. GE Vernova is currently trading well off its 52-week high of $1,195 at about $985 as of July 22. The stock is still up over 50% on the year.

Why GE Vernova Investors Should Ignore the Wind

Even with Caterpillar, industrials aren't the heaviest-weighted sector in the Dow.
GE Vernova equipment is in high demand for data center applications.
GE Vernova would need to issue a stock split to be considered for the Dow.
International Business Machines had its worst day in its history on July 14. So you may think that the blue chip dividend stock would drag down the Dow Jones Industrial Average, but that didn't happen. IBM has only a 2.3% weighting in the Dow, so its losses were more than offset by fellow Dow component Goldman Sachs, which has a 12.4% weighting and gained 9% that day.
This is just one of many examples when a Dow heavyweight has carried drastic underperformance from lower-weighted components. Ten of the Dow's 30 components are down year to date, but the Dow is up nearly 8% thanks to the overperformance of its top three heaviest weighted components. Goldman Sachs has the top weighting in the Dow and is up 23%, followed by Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT), which has a 10.3% weighting and is up 56%; and UnitedHealth Group, which has a 4.9% weighting and is up 30% on the year.

The price-weighted Dow index can become unbalanced if a handful of stocks surge in price without issuing stock splits. Goldman Sachs is up 190% in the last five years, and Caterpillar has done even better, jumping 330%. Combined, these two stocks make up over 22% of the Dow.
Right now, the industrials sector has the second-highest overall weighting in the Dow, representing 19% of the index. I believe there's an industrial stock that would be an ideal component to join the Dow, but it would need Caterpillar to issue a stock split first to balance the index's industrial sector weighting. That stock is GE Vernova (NYSE: GEV) -- let's see if it's a good buy now.
A Caterpillar split could open the door for GE Vernova
GE Vernova has some history in the Dow. It was created by the 2023 split of General Electric, which was divided into GE Vernova, GE Healthcare Technologies, and GE Aerospace. GE was one of the original members of the Dow when it was founded in 1896, but was removed in 2018.
The three independent companies have collectively produced incredible gains for investors who held the original stock. GE Vernova is up a mind-numbing 700% since its spinoff and 533% in the last two years. The rapid rise has pole-vaulted its market cap to $282 billion -- making it the third most valuable U.S. industrial company behind Caterpillar and GE Aerospace.
But Caterpillar would likely need to split its stock to make room for GE Vernova so the industrial sector isn't overweighted in the index. Caterpillar has issued stock splits in the past; its most recent split came in 2005.
And which company would be removed from the index to make room for GE Vernova? A very logical seat change could be dropping Nike, given that the athletic wear company is hovering near a 12-year low and its turnaround is taking far longer than expected. Nike has the smallest weighting in the Dow, making up only 0.48% of the index.
GE Vernova is a candidate to split its stock as well
At just over $1,000 per share at the time of this writing, GE Vernova would need to issue a stock split of its own before being added to the Dow.
If Caterpillar issued a stock split and GE Vernova replaced Nike at its current price, the Dow's industrial sector weighting would increase even more, and GE Vernova would instantly become one of the most heavily weighted components alongside Goldman Sachs. The Dow typically adds stocks only if they are priced closer to the index's median weighting or have recently split their own shares, to avoid tilting the index's balance.
For example, Alphabet issued a 20-for-1 stock split in 2022 and was added to the Dow in June of this year. If GE Vernova issued a 4-for-1 split, it would be priced right around the median of the Dow components.
This hypergrowth industrial stock deserves a seat in the Dow
Given its industry-leading role in supplying industrial machinery, such as heavy-duty gas turbines, for AI data centers, GE Vernova stands out as a logical choice for adding another industrial component to the Dow.
Despite its massive run-up in recent years, GE Vernova fetches a surprisingly reasonable 30.8 price-to-earnings ratio because its earnings growth has kept up with its stock price appreciation. However, analyst consensus estimates have GE Vernova earning $30.64 in 2026 earnings per share (EPS) but just $24.48 in 2027 EPS.
Investors who believe we are still in the early innings of the AI infrastructure build-out may still want to buy GE Vernova, but it's worth noting that cyclical stocks can look cheap when their trailing earnings are in an expansion cycle, and then far more expensive as earnings compress during downturns. GE Vernova could pull back just as quickly as it ran up if there's a spending slowdown, making the stock ideally suited for risk-tolerant investors willing to endure volatility.

Global investment in clean energy is expanding at an unprecedented scale. Driven by a combination of rapid technological advances, massive power demand, and heightened geopolitical concerns, capital flows into the sector are set to reach a milestone $2.2 trillion this year, according to the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) World Energy Investment 2026 report. This is nearly double the $1.2 trillion allocated to fossil fuels this year, with spending on clean energy — including renewables, battery storage, grids, nuclear, and electrification — expected to account for almost 65% of global energy investment.
This massive deployment of capital is propelled by three powerful, real-time demand drivers beyond long-term climate targets, which include the accelerating age of electricity, rapid buildout of AI infrastructure, and global geopolitical instability.
Electricity-related spending now represents nearly 60% of all global energy investment. Total investment in power supply and grid infrastructure is set to hit $1.6 trillion this year — climbing to $2 trillion when including end-use electrification like electric vehicles and heat pumps. Traditional growth drivers, including low levelized costs of energy (LCOE) for solar and wind, provide a strong, cost-effective base for this expansion.
Meanwhile, the rapid buildout of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure has introduced a powerful new source of power demand lately. Data centers running complex, large language models require vast amounts of continuous electricity. Tech giants have emerged as the single largest group of corporate clean energy buyers, securing roughly 40% of all global corporate Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) signed last year. With data center power consumption projected to nearly double by 2030, renewables remain the primary solution for meeting this fast-growing load.
On the other hand, recent geopolitical instability in the Middle East has exposed the vulnerabilities of long-distance fossil fuel supply chains, elevating energy security to a top national policy priority. As a result, net energy importers are increasingly turning to domestic, widely distributed clean energy assets, such as solar, wind, nuclear, and localized storage, to insulate their economies from external supply shocks and price volatility.
Consequently, renewables are on track to officially become the world’s largest source of electricity generation in 2026, overtaking coal after reaching near parity in 2025 (as predicted by IEA), with renewable generation poised to expand its share of total global electricity generation from 33% in 2025 to 37% by 2027.
At this critical juncture, one must be mindful that this target of renewable generation will be achieved only in conjunction with equivalent, if not more, energy storage capacity. As solar and wind power generation depends on weather conditions, battery energy storage systems (BESS) have emerged as a critical enabler of grid reliability. By capturing excess generation and dispatching power during peak hours, storage turns variable power into a steady, 24/7 energy supply while preventing grid overloads and blackouts.
With rapidly falling battery costs making renewable-plus-storage setups economically superior to traditional fossil fuel peaker plants, the IEA estimates global investment in battery storage to surpass $100 billion this year alone — solidifying energy storage as the central engine supporting the global clean energy rollout.

Bloom Energy specializes in on-site, non-combustion solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology, providing 24/7, low-carbon electricity for data centers, microgrids, and industrial use. 1. Natural gas power turbines are a huge part of AI data centers' future
This power-focused offshoot of former industrial giant General Electric makes a range of products. But none are arguably as important right now as its electricity-generating natural gas turbines.
Initially intended for power utilities, more and more of these turbines capable of producing anywhere from 34.5 megawatts to 571 megawatts' worth of electricity (100 megawatts is enough to power on the order of 50,000 homes) are being purchased by artificial intelligence data centers that want -- and need -- to take their power production needs into their own hands.
PwC expects data-center-driven demand for natural gas in the United States alone to roughly double between now and 2028, en route to eight times as much consumption by 2035. GE Vernova's chief challenge right now is simply not being able to manufacture gas turbines fast enough.
2. The backlog stands at more than half its market cap
Another key reason GEV stock could double within the next couple of years is simply that the business to support the necessary underlying growth is already lined up. As of the end of June, this company's backlog stood at $176 billion, split evenly between equipment and service.
For perspective, GE Vernova's current market capitalization is $285 billion, and it did $38.1 billion worth of business last year.
3. GE Vernova is addressing the less obvious, more ambiguous "grid" problem
Finally, it's not easy to pinpoint because it's not easy to see, but GE Vernova is making national and global power grids more efficient not only by upgrading its core components but also by improving how all these components work together. For instance, the company makes utility-scale power transformers, substation equipment, energy storage solutions, and high-voltage direct current systems to deliver power from where it's produced to where it's rerouted to customers, but it also offers the monitoring and management software to optimize all of it.
This is no trivial detail either. The world's power grids are a significant bottleneck. Although only a modest 5% of electricity is lost in the transmission from the power plant to that electricity's end user, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the grid itself is congested and overloaded -- because power isn't being produced where it's largely being consumed.
And yes, this problem been exacerbated by the rapid proliferation of data centers.
The first best solution? Simply establishing more capacity by expanding the grid's footprint, which is finally happening in earnest. The Edison Electric Institute (EEI) reports the nation's power utilities companies are investing a record-breaking $239 billion on the U.S. power grid this year alone as part of a $1.4 trillion spending plan through 2030. Much of this spending will, of course, be on equipment made by GE Vernova.

1. GE Vernova: powering the AI revolution
GE Vernova's shares have skyrocketed in 2026. Wall Street thinks the industrial stock can go even higher over the next 12 months. But this isn't a kind of stock to own for only a year or so. GE Vernova is a fantastic long-term pick.
The company's technologies are used to generate around 25% of the world's electricity. GE Vernova has installed around 7,000 gas turbines -- the largest fleet based on wattage. Its installed base of wind turbines totals roughly 59,000 and includes the largest installed base of onshore wind turbines in the U.S.
GE Vernova's backlog jumped $13 billion quarter-over-quarter in Q1 to $163 billion. This total represents more than 3.5 years of annual sales based on the company's 2026 revenue guidance.
Booming demand for artificial intelligence (AI) is a key factor behind GE Vernova's impressive growth. It's no exaggeration to say that the company is powering the AI revolution. Other trends are also driving global electrification, though, and serving as tailwinds for GE Vernova, including the transition from coal-fueled power plants to natural gas.
2. NextEra Energy: the king of the utilities sector
NextEra Energy is the largest electric utility in the U.S. It's the largest energy infrastructure company in North America. The company is a global leader in renewable energy and battery storage. And it will soon be even bigger.
Two months ago, NextEra announced plans to acquire Dominion Energy (NYSE: D) in an all-stock transaction valued at $66.8 billion. This deal will make the combined entity the world's largest regulated electric utility by market cap.
NextEra expects to deliver strong adjusted earnings per share (EPS) growth through 2035, with a targeted compound annual growth rate of at least 8%. Management also plans to increase its dividend by around 10% this year and by 6% per year through the end of 2028.
What's behind such impressive growth for a utility stock? AI demand is the biggest factor. NextEra's renewables leadership, including its significant nuclear power operations, should help ensure this stock remains a reliable compounder for years to come.
3. Brookfield Infrastructure: income and diversification
Brookfield Infrastructure offers two investment alternatives that share the same underlying business. You can buy units of the limited partnership (LP), Brookfield Infrastructure Partners, under the BIP ticker. If you don't want to deal with the tax hassles associated with investing in LPs, you can buy shares of Brookfield Infrastructure Corporation, which trades under the BIPC ticker.
Either stock provides nice income. Brookfield Infrastructure Partners' distribution yield currently stands at around 4.7%, while Brookfield Infrastructure Corporation's forward dividend yield is 4.5%. Management plans to increase the distribution by 5% to 9% per year.
Both infrastructure stocks also give you tremendous diversification. Brookfield Infrastructure owns cell towers, data centers, electricity transmission lines, fiber optic cable, natural gas pipelines, natural gas storage facilities, rail operations, semiconductor manufacturing foundries, toll roads, and more. Its operations span five continents.
Brookfield Infrastructure targets a total annual return on invested capital of between 12% and 15%. It expects to grow funds from operations (FFO) by at least 10% per year. Importantly, around 85% of the company's FFO is protected from, or indexed to, inflation. I view Brookfield Infrastructure as one of the most resilient combination growth/income alternatives on the market.
Three stocks, two decades, one caveat
Can buying and holding these three stocks for two decades really make you a millionaire? I think so.
However, there is one important caveat: No one knows what changes could come over the next 20 years. Adverse regulatory decisions, technological disruptions, and/or management missteps could cause any of these stocks to flounder. That said, GE Vernova, NextEra Energy, and Brookfield Infrastructure operate in sectors that should grow regardless of what happens with the economy.

Big tech companies suddenly needed astronomical amounts of immediate, reliable, round-the-clock electricity. As the world's largest manufacturer of natural gas turbines and a leading manufacturer of electrical transmission and distribution equipment, such as transformers and switchgear, GE Vernova had the right solution on scale.
The stock nearly doubled in 2025 and continued to rally through the first six months of 2026 as order book exploded. GE Vernova's latest numbers, however, have sent the stock tumbling. What does that mean for investors?
Every GE Vernova number you must know
In early 2026, GE Vernova completed a $5.3 billion buyout of transformer manufacturer Prolec, taking 100% control of a critical supplier and instantly expanding its electrification equipment backlog. When its first-quarter numbers hit in April, the financial momentum was undeniable.
GE Vernova bagged orders worth $18.3 billion, up 71% year-over-year. The power segment (natural gas turbines) pulled in $10 billion in orders, electrification segment $7.1 billion, and wind turbine segment the remaining. Backlog hit $163 billion.
The real spark was slot reservation agreements. Gas turbine supply is so tight that data center developers and utilities are paying upfront cash deposits just to secure manufacturing slots years in advance. In Q1 alone, GE Vernova was booking slots through 2030. Those upfront payments and strong sales helped generate a jaw-dropping net margin of 50.9% and $4.8 billion in free cash flow (FCF), prompting management to raise its full-year revenue and cash flow guidance.
The cash windfall fueled aggressive capital returns. GE Vernova had doubled its dividend per share and boosted its share repurchase program by $10 billion in December 2025.
By the time June closed out, GE Vernova was no longer a sleepy industrial spinoff but an essential AI picks-and-shovels play solving the biggest challenge facing data centers.
GE Vernova stock plunges after Q2 earnings. What should you do?
The momentum has broken, or so it seems. GE Vernova dropped its Q2 numbers on July 22, and the stock plunged over 9%.
The culprit? Not the orders, not backlog. The stock got hammered because earnings fell short of consensus projections and management warned about a $100-$200 million tariff hit in 2026.
It's absurd how easily negative headlines can mask a monster quarter and trigger a knee-jerk market reaction.
Here's what GE Vernova actually reported for Q2:
Orders of $24 billion, up 88% organically
Backlog growth of $13 billion to $176 billion
FCF of $5.1 billion, more than all of 2025
2026 revenue guidance raised again to $46 billion

Expects to sell more than 50% of 2031 slots by the end of this year.
