In addition, the company provides retail installment sale contracts for new and used vehicles; and direct financing leases for new vehicles to retail and commercial customers, such as leasing companies, government entities, daily rental companies, and fleet customers. Further, it offers wholesale loans to dealers to finance the purchase of vehicle inventory; and loans to dealers to finance working capital and enhance dealership facilities, purchase dealership real estate, and other dealer vehicle programs. Rivian (NASDAQ: RIVN) was one of the hottest IPOs of 2021. The electric vehicle maker went public at $78 on Nov. 10 and closed at its record high of $172.01 six days later. It initially impressed the bulls because it had already started mass-producing its first vehicles, and it was backed by Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) and Ford (NYSE: F). The buying frenzy in hypergrowth and meme stocks in late 2021 further inflated its valuations and amplified its gains.
At its peak, Rivian's market capitalization reached $153.3 billion -- or 92 times the revenue it ultimately generated in 2022. However, today, Rivian's stock trades at approximately $17 with a market cap of $21.5 billion -- which is just three times the revenue it's expected to generate in 2026. That makes it dirt cheap compared to Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA), which trades at 14 times next year's sales. So could this unloved EV stock bounce back and head higher over the next 12 months?

Can Rivian ramp up its production and deliveries?
Rivian sells three types of EVs: the R1T pickup truck, the R1S SUV, and custom electric delivery vans (EDVs) for Amazon and other companies. When it went public, it planned to produce 50,000 vehicles in 2022 and co-develop another electric pickup with Ford.
However, Rivian only produced 24,337 vehicles in 2022 as it struggled with supply chain constraints, factory shutdowns, and intense competition from other EV makers. Ford also abandoned its partnership with Rivian and sold most of its 12% stake in 2022. Amazon, which placed a long-term order for Rivian's EDVs through 2030, kept its 17% stake.
In 2023, Rivian more than doubled its annual production to 57,232 vehicles. It resolved most of its supply chain issues, strengthened its relationships with its suppliers, made its factories more efficient, and reduced its production costs with its in-house Enduro drive unit. But its production and deliveries stalled out again in 2024 and 2025.

Rivian attributed that slowdown to inflation, rising interest rates, reduced EV subsidies, and competitive headwinds. It also temporarily shut down its central plant in Illinois several times to upgrade its facilities and prepare for the planned launch of its cheaper R2 SUV in 2026.
For 2025, Rivian expects to deliver only 41,500 to 43,500 vehicles. Analysts expect its revenue to rise 8% to $5.37 billion as it sells more of its existing cars. They also expect it to narrow its net loss to $3.82 billion as it sells more of its regulatory credits to other automakers, expands its software and services segment, and uses more in-house components to boost its margins.
For 2026, analysts expect Rivian's revenue to increase 28% to $6.87 billion as it narrows its net loss to $3.66 billion. However, that acceleration will rely on a timely and well-executed rollout of its R2 SUV in the first half of 2026. If the R2 is delayed or met with a chilly reception, Rivian will broadly miss Wall Street's expectations. In 2027, they expect Rivian's revenue to surge 65% to $11.37 billion as it narrows its net loss to $3.15 billion. That optimistic outlook assumes that it will scale up its production of the R2, stabilize its other vehicle shipments, deliver more EDVs to Amazon, and gain more EDV customers. If it can achieve those goals, then its stock appears grossly undervalued at present.
Where will Rivian's stock be in a year?
With nearly $7.7 billion in total liquidity at the end of its latest quarter, Rivian believes it has enough cash to ramp up its production of the R2 next year. If the R2 launch is successful, it meets Wall Street's revenue targets, and its stock trades at a more generous five times forward sales by the end of 2026, it could rise by more than 160% over the next 12 months. However, investors should keep a close eye on its progress with the R2. If it falls short of the market's expectations, Rivian's stock could still decline significantly.

Where Will Rivian Automotive Stock Be in 1 Year?

(RTTNews) - South Korea-based SK On, a subsidiary of SK Innovation Co., Ltd. (096770.KS), Thursday announced its decision to dissolve its joint venture with Ford Motor Company (F) to focus on other growth sectors.
As part of this move, each company will independently own and operate its portion of the joint battery factories' production facilities in the United States.
Notably, a Ford subsidiary will take full ownership of the battery plants in Kentucky, whereas SK On will assume full ownership and operate the battery plant in Tennessee.
The battery maker expects the recent move to strengthen battery productivity as well as boost its entry into North American energy storage system business.
SK's stock closed at KRW 112,300.00, down 3.69 percent on the Korean Stock Exchange. Meanwhile, Ford's stock is trading at $13.41, up 0.02 percent in the pre-market hours on the New York Stock Exchange.

SK On, Ford To Dissolve Battery Joint Venture In US

Morgan Stanley recently downgraded Tesla TSLA to Equal Weight from Overweight, with a new $425 price target, citing that the stock's valuation already prices in lofty expectations for AI, robotics, and Full Self-Driving amid slower electric vehicle (EV) adoption and competition. As expected, shares of the EV-maker dipped around 3% on Dec. 8, 2025 (as per a Yahoo Finance report) following the announcement.
This highlights how vulnerable it can be to invest in a single stock. However, investors in EV-focused exchange-traded funds (ETFs) might take this event as an opportunity to revisit their portfolios, considering that Tesla held 41% of the U.S. EV market as of the third quarter of 2025 (as per data provided by Clean Technica).
To this end, it is imperative to mention that popular EV ETFs hold auto stalwarts, such as Ford F, General Motors GM and Volkswagen VWAGY, in addition to Tesla, and are all ramping up EV investments. But before discussing how diversified these ETFs are and how they can cushion investors from sudden single-stock volatility, let’s take a closer look at what’s wrong with Tesla, where the company stands in the EV market and what the broader prospects for the EV industry look like. Tesla’s Downgrade & Shifting Dominance
Morgan Stanley’s analysts, in addition to downgrading Tesla’s rating, also slashed the company’s delivery forecasts through 2040. Notably, the firm expects Tesla’s delivery volume to decline 10.5% in 2026 and projects an 18.5% reduction in cumulative deliveries through 2040.
This trimmed delivery forecast seems to be the result of Tesla’s eroding dominance in EV market lately. For instance, in China, the world's largest EV market, Tesla's share shrank significantly in late 2025 due to fierce competition from local brands like BYD and Xiaomi.
However, the analysts at Morgan Stanley mentioned that Tesla is "uniquely positioned to be a leader" in the humanoid robot market, thanks to its existing manufacturing abilities and technological advantage. To this end, Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk has publicly stated that he believes the company’s values to eventually be dominated by its AI and robotics initiatives, specifically the Optimus humanoid robot, rather than its EV business. This reflects the company’s strategic decision to reduce focus on EVs and increase investments in AI, robotics and robotaxis.
Therefore, for investors interested in the booming EV market, investing in EV ETFs may make more sense than investing in Tesla shares.
EV Market’s Upward Trajectory
As the entire world steers toward a green future, the fundamental growth story for electric vehicles remains strong. Global consumer demand for EVs remains robust, with total battery electric vehicle sales in all analyzed markets having surged 35% in third-quarter 2025 compared to last year (as per an October Report from PWC).
Growth is being driven by a surge in model availability and more affordable options. While traditional EV makers like BYD saw impressive sales results, legacy automakers have also achieved robust gains. Evidently, General Motors and Volkswagen saw year-over-year EV sales growth exceeding 100% in the third quarter. This expansion further underscores that the EV revolution is no longer dependent on just a handful of players, but is being driven by the entire industry.
Based on this, Gartner expects 116 million EVs to be on the road next year globally, reflecting a solid 30% surge.
EV ETFs: Your Diversification Shield
The discussion and growth projections outlined above make a compelling case for keeping EV ETFs, such as those listed below, on one’s watchlist. This fund, with assets under management (AUM) worth $21.5 million, provides exposure to 79 companies whose products and services are driving innovation behind smart transportation. Its top three holdings include Lumentum Holdings (3.83%), a provider of optical and laser technology used in EV battery manufacturing, Ballard Power Systems (2.26%), a provider of hydrogen fuel cell technology used in EVs, and Garret Motion (2.18%), a provider of zero-emission technologies like electric turbochargers used in hybrid electric cars.
HAIL has surged 22.8% year to date. The fund charges 45 bps as fees.
iShares Self-Driving EV and Tech ETF IDRV
This fund, with net assets worth $169.8 million, provides exposure to 46 companies at the forefront of self-driving and EV innovation. Its top 10 holdings include Albemarle Corp (6.63%), a supplier of essential lithium carbonate and hydroxide for EV batteries, PLS Group (4.21%), a provider of lithium materials used in EV batteries, and Rivian Automotive (3.92%), a maker of adventure EVs.
IDRV has soared 33.1% year to date. The fund charges 48 bps as fees.

Morgan Stanley Downgrades Tesla: Should You Revisit Your EV ETF Portfolio?

Ford Motor Company F is teaming up with Renault SA RNLSY to develop small, low-cost electric vehicles for Europe and co-produce commercial vans, per a Reuters article published on MSN.
Per CEO Jim Farley, the company is struggling to maintain its position amid intensifying competition from Chinese EV makers, particularly in Europe. Under the new partnership, the first of two compact EVs built by Renault at its northern France plant will arrive in European showrooms in 2028. Per Farley, these models will be smaller than anything Ford plans for the United States and will fill a key gap in its European lineup.
The two companies will also collaborate on Ford and Renault brand vans for the region, which is likely to create a European LCV powerhouse that Chinese rivals will struggle to challenge. The collaboration began after Renault executives visited Ford’s Detroit headquarters in March.
Ford’s share of the European passenger car market has dropped from 6.1% in 2019 to 3.3% this year as it scaled back passenger car operations, cut jobs and closed its Saarlouis plant in Germany. Leveraging Renault’s EV platforms while incorporating Ford’s design approach is expected to strengthen Ford’s competitiveness against both legacy European automakers like Volkswagen and rapidly expanding Chinese brands. Other Auto Makers Facing Competition From Chinese Counterparts
Tesla, Inc. TSLA has been losing market share after dominating the EV market for years, while all other players are gaining market share at its expense. Tesla’s US EV market share is currently below 50%, down from 63% in 2022. The company’s dominant market position is likely to drop further, thanks to stiff competition. There are also concerns with respect to the Chinese market, which is full of home-grown players. As China is a big market for Tesla, stiff competition is likely to erode its share in the country.
Rivian’s RIVN trucks are on the higher end of the market, making demand sensitive to economic conditions. Amid the rising competition from domestic and Chinese players, Rivian must differentiate itself while maintaining growth. Rivian’s next model offering is still a year away.
F’s Price Performance, Valuation and Estimates
Ford has outperformed the Zacks Automotive-Domestic industry year to date. Its shares have gained 32.1% compared with the industry’s growth of 12.7%.

Will Ford's Renault Alliance Help Counter Rising Chinese EV Rivals?

Here are a few names that seem like good plays if you're investing your first $1,000.
1. Ford

This might seem like a boring play, but Ford Motor Company's (NYSE: F) current dividend yield of 4.48% is intriguing in conjunction with its cheap valuation. Fresh off an earnings beat, Ford is sitting on $26.8 billion in cash, indicating that its dividend payout is safe.
In the third quarter, Ford reported automotive revenue of $47.19 billion, handily outpacing expectations of $43.08 billion. Adjusted earnings also beat expectations; coming in at $0.45 per share. This helped give this stock some extra mojo. In all, this is a slow and steady play. Ford grows modestly, but the stock has performed well this year, gaining about 36%.
Like many auto stocks, Ford shares trade for cheap, at roughly 11.4 times earnings. That is admittedly a two-sided trend. On the one hand, it means that Ford shares aren't likely to skyrocket unless earnings really take off. On the other hand, you know that you're not getting caught overpaying.
Perhaps the biggest thing here is the $26.8 billion in cash that Ford has at its disposal. The automaker has plenty of dry powder to employ in its business. Couple that with the aforementioned dividend, and Ford seems like a compelling play.
2. JPMorgan
JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM) seems like an obvious choice here. Over time, it has solidly outperformed the market, roughly doubling the S&P 500's return over the last five years. JPMorgan is positioned as the preeminent bank in America, if not the world. Even when it has a slower quarter, this bank is so established within the U.S. financial framework that the stock seems to get the benefit of the doubt from investors, as it doesn't falter very often.
Interest income has expanded steadily since 2021, and earnings have subsequently shown strength. As showcased in the third quarter, JPMorgan had a return on equity of 17%, and assets under management were up 18% year over year to $4.6 trillion. Earnings looked good in the third quarter, gaining 16% year over year to $5.07 per diluted share.
With a declining share count over the past five years, and consistent earnings, JPMorgan is a stock to ride over the long haul. Its dividend might not be huge, but it's the stock's performance over time that makes this such a compelling play.
3. Nvidia
Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) has returned 40% to shareholders year to date. The chipmaker's position within the growing artificial intelligence (AI) industry has helped it gain a lot of attention, and revenue and earnings have grown exponentially over the last few years. With the world of AI seemingly not going anywhere but up, it stands to reason that Nvidia has continued upside ahead, even after becoming the first $5 trillion company.
The numbers are there. Second quarter revenue results were up 56% year over year to $46.7 billion. Net income increased a strong 59% to $26.42 billion. All this boils down to GAAP earnings of $1.08 per diluted share for shareholders, a 61% increase year over year.
It's challenging to find a company that has produced bigger growth over the last few years, which explains why Nvidia became a $5 trillion company in market capital. Some might say, well that's too rich for my blood. While I would normally agree with that, I think Nvidia is an exception.
Even if it does pull back, this company is set up to provide chips and products for the AI space. As I said, this is seemingly going to be a big part of our future, which gives Nvidia a good chance of having increased demand for its products. I think this is one to buy and hold.

(F), on Monday, announced it outlined the next phase of its European strategy, focusing on agility, cost efficiency, and a stronger product lineup for both retail and commercial customers. The company also announced a strategic collaboration with Renault SA (RNO.PA) to accelerate its product plan.
The plan is built on three pillars such as strengthening Ford Pro, expanding the passenger car range with new models, and optimizing manufacturing for scale and efficiency.
The company said that a new product wave will begin in 2028, including multi-energy and affordable vehicles designed to support customer choice during the transition to electrification.
The partnership with Renault includes joint development of two Ford-branded EVs on Renault's Ampere platform for 2028, and a Letter of Intent to explore jointly developed light commercial vehicles.
Ford Pro remains the core of its European business, supported by its software and services ecosystem. The Ford Liive Uptime system delivered 820,000 days of additional vehicle uptime in 2024.
The company continues to leverage partnerships with Koç Holding through Ford Otosan and with Volkswagen to strengthen its commercial and electric vehicle operations.
The company also called for better alignment of European carbon dioxide regulations with market conditions. EV share in Europe remains at 16.1%, well below the 25% required by 2025 targets.
The company urged policymakers to adjust carbon dioxide targets, maintain incentives for electrification, and support small businesses that depend on commercial vehicles.
On Monday, Ford closed trading 0.84% higher at $13.14 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Ford Outlines New Europe Strategy; Partners With Renault

General Motors Company’s GM product portfolio and manufacturing strategy have been shaped by steadily tightening fuel economy and emissions standards over the past several years. In anticipation of a rapid shift toward electric vehicles, the company invested heavily in expanding EV capacity across its plants and supply chain.
However, the landscape has shifted. With regulatory frameworks evolving and federal consumer incentives coming to an end, GM expects near-term EV adoption to fall short of earlier expectations. This change has led to underutilized EV capacity and higher variable costs, which prompted the automaker to reassess several major initiatives.
One of the most significant outcomes of this reassessment is GM’s decision to transition the Orion Assembly plant from EV production back to internal combustion engine vehicles. The company has also agreed to sell its joint venture-owned battery cell plant in Michigan to LG Energy Solution. These moves contributed to a $1.6 billion special charge recorded in the third quarter, with $1.2 billion tied to noncash impairments. Most of these impairments stem from the Orion transition, reduced battery module assembly capacity, the discontinuation of next-generation hydrogen fuel cell development and the write-off of CAFE credits and related liabilities.
Another major shift involves GM’s BrightDrop initiative, the company’s electric delivery and logistics subsidiary. GM has decided to halt BrightDrop production at CAMI Assembly while it evaluates the facility for future opportunities. Combined with regulatory changes and reduced fleet incentives, the business environment for BrightDrop has become increasingly difficult.
GM expects to record an additional charge in the fourth quarter related to BrightDrop actions. Still, the automaker believes these swift and decisive adjustments will meaningfully reduce EV-related losses by 2026 and strengthen the company’s long-term positioning as the market stabilizes. GM’s Price Performance, Valuation and Estimates
General Motors has outperformed the Zacks Automotive-Domestic industry and its peers, Ford Motor Company F and Tesla, Inc. TSLA, year to date. GM’s shares have gained 42.8% compared with the industry’s growth of 16.2%. Shares of Ford have risen 31.6%, while shares of Tesla have gained 12.7% in the same period.

From a valuation perspective, GM appears undervalued compared to the industry. Going by its price/sales ratio, the company is trading at a forward sales multiple of 0.39, lower than the industry’s 3.42. Ford is trading at a forward P/S ratio of 0.32, while Tesla is trading at 14.29.

What Does the Orion Assembly Pivot Mean for General Motors' EV Plans?

Ford Motor Company F is recalling 108,762 vehicles in the United States because a liftgate hinge cover may not be properly secured and could detach, per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The recall applies to specific 2020-2022 Escape models as well as the 2025 Escape.
Per autoevolution, 6,412 units from the 2025 model year are affected, along with 102,350 vehicles from 2020-2022. The production periods span Dec. 2, 2024, to April 1, 2025, for the 2025 models and Nov. 13, 2018, to April 5, 2022, for the earlier model years. All North American Escape units are assembled at Ford’s Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky.
Ford first examined this issue in July 2021 but closed the inquiry early, believing few vehicles were at risk. The company reopened the investigation in May 2025 after a separate recall involving 2016-2017 Explorers. Per NHTSA, dealers will check, reinstall or replace any missing liftgate hinge covers at no cost.
Per a Reuters report published on MSN, Ford is also recalling nearly 12,000 Lincoln MKT vehicles from model years 2016-2019 because the B-pillar door trim for the driver and front passenger can come loose, raising the risk of a crash. Recent Recalls by Other Automakers
Stellantis N.V. STLA recalled 72,509 Ram models in the United States because a software malfunction can cause the instrument cluster display to go dark, per the NHTSA. This comes after Stellantis’ November recall of 112,859 U.S. vehicles due to potential engine failures or engine-compartment fire risks. Stellantis' November recall covered 2023-2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4XE and 2024-2025 Jeep Wrangler 4XE plug-in hybrids.
Rivian Automotive, Inc. RIVN also recalled 34,824 electric delivery vans in the United States because a defect in the seat belt system could prevent it from properly restraining the driver, posing a higher risk of injury in a crash, per a filing with the NHTSA. To address the issue, Rivian rolled out an over-the-air software update that automatically detects improper seat belt use.
F’s Price Performance, Valuation and Estimates
Ford has outperformed the Zacks Automotive-Domestic industry year to date. Its shares have gained 31.6% compared with the industry’s growth of 16.2%.

From a valuation perspective, F appears undervalued. Going by its price/sales ratio, the company is trading at a forward sales multiple of 0.32, lower than the industry’s 3.42.

What's Behind Ford's Recall of Nearly 109K Escape Vehicles?

General Motors Company GM plans to restore North American margins to the 8-10% range, even as the industry navigates shifting economic and regulatory pressures. During its third-quarterearnings call the company reaffirmed that this target is aspirational but achievable with the right strategic adjustments and time to recalibrate operations.
A key area of focus is reducing the net tariff burden. Whether through future trade agreements or through internal cost-management efforts, GM sees meaningful opportunities to offset tariff-related pressures. Another encouraging sign is the stabilization of warranty-related cash outflows. With expenses leveling off, the company expects accruals to catch up over time, eventually creating margin tailwinds as it moves into 2026 and 2027.
General Motors is also taking decisive steps to rightsize its electric vehicle capacity. In the past, production was heavily influenced by a compliance-driven regulatory environment, pushing the company to scale EV operations rapidly. As the market transitions to more natural, demand-driven growth, GM is adjusting its EV footprint to better align with actual consumer interest.
By combining tariff reductions, warranty improvements and a more disciplined EV strategy, GM believes that it can steadily rebuild margins and strengthen its long-term North American profitability. Margin Performance of GM’s Competitors
Tesla’s TSLA automotive margins inched up from 15% to 15.4% in the third quarter of 2025. Tesla’s margin improvement was driven by lower material costs and stronger fixed-cost absorption as production volumes increased. Tesla’s energy storage division also performed strongly, posting record deployment levels, gross profit and margin gains.
Ford Motor Company F has seen its combined earnings before interest and taxes from software and physical services climb more than 20% over the past three years. Ford’s revenue base has also become more balanced, expanding across different regions, product segments, sales channels and service offerings. In addition, Ford’s industrial operations have consistently delivered cost reductions, providing a solid foundation for sustaining healthy margins.
General Motors’ Price Performance, Valuation and Estimates
GM has outperformed the Zacks Automotive-Domestic industry year to date. General Motors' shares have gained 58.6% compared to the industry’s growth of 50.1%.

How is General Motors Planning to Rebuild Its Profitability?

If you rewind the automotive industry back about two decades, there was a fairly well-known problem with Detroit automakers such as Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) and General Motors (NYSE: GM). The problem was that to fill unused production capacity, they overproduced cars and often sold them to fleet companies at lower margin; it was an ugly business for many years.
Thankfully, Detroit automakers have mostly turned around that rough narrative, and Ford Pro, the company's commercial business, is thriving -- and a competitor is taking notice.

Profit machine
Fast forwarding back to today, and Ford's commercial business is not only thriving, it's a huge cornerstone of Ford's profitability currently -- just look at the data from the third quarter. Through the first three quarters of the year Ford Blue, which is Ford's traditional gasoline and hybrid retail business, generated $2.3 billion EBIT at a 3.1% margin. Ford Pro, which is Ford's commercial business, generated $5.6 billion EBIT at a 10.9% margin.
A simple comparison highlights just how valuable Ford Pro is to the company, especially when you consider that Ford's Model-e division, responsible for its electric vehicle (EV) ambitions, lost $3.6 billion over the same time frame. Ford Pro's paid software subscriptions grew 8% sequentially to reach 818,000 subscribers, which is more high-margin business for the automaker.
While Ford has worked long and hard to fine-tune its commercial business, which also does great in Europe, Stellantis (NYSE: STLA) has taken notice. The latter has been growing its commercial fleet business overseas in Europe, South America, the Middle East, and Africa, and now the automaker is turning its eyes toward the U.S. market where it sees opportunities in the commercial sector, rental fleets, and government orders.
Stellantis' business in Europe has been gaining traction, and its commercial division has taken about 30% market share. It's going to take a monumental effort to match that market share in the U.S., where Stellantis accounts for only about 12% of commercial fleet sales, but consistently gaining even small amounts of market share will be a bonus.
Determined not to repeat mistakes of decades past, Stellantis is focusing its commercial business on government and commercial business, which are both higher-margin businesses than rental fleet sales. It's extremely early, but there are already some positive signs for Stellantis investors as the automaker improved its commercial portfolio with refreshed heavy-duty pickups and bringing back the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 1500.
The good news is that it's decent timing. As Stellantis continued working on its commercial business model, its U.S. fleet sales surged 22% during the third quarter. The surge was partly due to Stellantis being quick to the draw and first in the market with pricing for its 2026 models.
It's been tried before
While Stellantis has a glimpse of early success, the road will be a long one.
Meanwhile, crosstown rival General Motors experienced a speedbump in its own commercial plans. GM had expanding ambitions when it developed and launched its BrightDrop electric delivery van, but the hype quickly faded. The electric van saw production halted in May and then officially ended. GM cited several reasons, including a more slowly growing electric van market, changing regulatory environment, and the end of the federal $7,500 EV tax credit.
Ultimately, this is a bit of good news for Stellantis investors; although it will take time to gain more traction, it's one of many things the automaker needs to improve or fix amid its substantial turnaround efforts. For Ford investors, it's something to keep an eye on, but the folks at the Blue Oval have their commercial business down to a science, and that should continue to be the automaker's overlooked profit machine.
