Investors may be taking a fresh look at General Motors GM) and Ford Motor’s F) stock after their stronger-than-expected Q1 earnings and upgraded guidance.
GM topped Wall Street’s EPS expectations yesterday evening, and Ford followed suit with its own earnings beat after-market hours on Wednesday.
Both automakers delivered earnings beats that signaled stronger profitability, healthier margins, and early traction in their efforts to balance EV investments with resilient combustion-engine demand.
Tariff Refunds Boost GM & Ford’s Q1 Results
Despite higher EV-related costs and modest revenue softness, GM’s operational performance, strategic positioning, and digital services drove a standout quarter. Impressively exceeding earnings expectations, GM’s Q1 EPS came in at $3.70, nearly 42% above estimates of $2.61 and spiking from $2.78 per share in the prior year quarter.
GM’s outperformance was attributed to a $500 million tariff-related benefit from a Supreme Court decision, and strong North American performance, including leadership in full-size pickup sales. Other highlights included growing digital services, with OnStar and Super Cruise subscriber growth accelerating during the quarter.
This was despite Q1 sales of $43.62 billion slightly missing expectations of $43.93 billion and dipping from $44.02 billion a year ago. Still, GM reported that its adjusted EBIT increased 22% YoY to $4.25 billion, reflecting improved margins and operational discipline.

As for Ford, Q1 EPS of $0.66 crushed expectations of $0.20 by 230% and climbed from $0.14 a share in the prior year quarter. This came as Q1 sales rose 6% to $39.81 billion and edged estimates of $39.34 billion. Most intriguing, Ford’s adjusted EBIT more than tripled to $3.5 billion.
Ford also highlighted a $1.3 billion tariff refund. While the refund has not yet been received, the company stated it will help offset rising commodity costs, especially for aluminum.

GM & Ford’s Raised Guidance
GM raised its FY26 EPS guidance range to $11.50-$13.50 and increased its adjusted EBIT outlook to a range of $13.5-$15.5 billion. These figures were up from prior EPS and EBIT guidance of $11.00-$13.00 and $13-$15 billion.
Meanwhile, Ford raised its adjusted EBIT guidance to a range of $8.5-$10.5 billion from $8-$10 billion.
Bottom Line
A combination of earnings beats, higher guidance, tariff relief, and expanding margins may start to give analysts confidence that GM and Ford can outperform in an increasingly competitive auto market.
For now, GM and Ford stock both land a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). That said, buy ratings could be on the way, given that EPS revisions are likely to trend higher and these auto giants remain attractively valued at less than 10X forward earnings, respectively.

Ford Motor Co Announces Climb In Q1 Bottom Line

The board of directors of Ford Motor today declared a second-quarter regular dividend of 15 cents per share on the company's outstanding common and Class B stock. The dividend is payable on June 1 to shareholders of record at the close of business on May 12.
TechnipFMC today announced that its Board of Directors has authorized and declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.05 per share, payable on June 3, 2026 to shareholders of record as of the close of business on the New York Stock Exchange on May 19, 2026, which is also the ex-dividend date.
MetLife today announced that its board of directors has declared a second quarter 2026 common stock dividend of $0.5925 per share, an increase of 4.4% from the first quarter common stock dividend of $0.5675 per share. MetLife has increased its common stock quarterly dividend at an 8.1% compound annual growth rate since 2011. The dividend will be payable on June 9, 2026, to shareholders of record as of May 12, 2026. "We are pleased to increase our common stock dividend by 4.4%," said MetLife President and Chief Executive Officer Michel Khalaf. "This reflects MetLife's durable earnings power, disciplined capital management, and our commitment - and ability - to deliver for our shareholders across cycles."
The Board of Directors of Becton, Dickinson and Company, a leading global medical technology company, today announced it has declared a quarterly dividend of $1.05 per common share, payable on June 30, 2026, to holders of record on June 9, 2026. The indicated annual dividend rate is $4.20 per share.

President Trump continues his tough talk on his social media platform Truth Social this morning, which can be understood at this stage in the two-month war that negotiations are currently static. But for once, there may be something even bigger than the Strait of Hormuz affecting investors’ attitudes (even with Brent crude back up to $115 per barrel): in aggregate, this may be the biggest day ofstock market newsso far in 2026.
Not only is today the final Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) decision under Fed Chair Jerome Powell — Kevin Warsh will replace him for the FOMC’s June meeting — but four of the “Magnificent 7” stocks will report quarterly earnings after the closing bell. The FOMC is 100% likely to keep the 3.50-3.75% Fed funds rate steady, as it has been since December of last year. For the “Mag 7” stocks, capital outlays toward AI investment will be closely watched.
Not only that, but we also see dozens of important companies reporting Q1 earnings before and after the bell that are unrelated to the AI trade, such as Phillips 66 in the early AM and Ford F, Qualcomm QCOM and Chipotle CMG this afternoon. Also, a plethora of economic reports greet us an hour before the opening bell.
Fresh Data for March: Durable Goods, Housing Starts & More
We see some unexpectedly strong economic growth numbers from March this morning, and we’ll start by discussing Durable Goods Orders: +0.8% is 4x what analysts had been expecting, the first positive print in the past four months, and the highest since +5.4% in November of last year. This follows an unrevised -1.4% from February.
Ex-Transportation, we see this bump up to +0.9%, and non-Defense, ex-aircraft — a proxy for “regular” enterprise spending — we see the biggest jump in almost six years: +3.3%. We can trace this boom to AI infrastructure spending, with the AI equipment segment up big: +3.7%. At least we’re beginning to see the results of AI investment make its way into metrics not directly associated with Big Tech “hyperscalers.”
Housing Starts for March jumped to their highest levels since December 2024 this morning: +1.502 million seasonally adjusted, annualized units was way up from the downwardly revised +1.36 million reported for February. For the first time since September of 2022, we saw a “5-handle” on 30-year fixed mortgage rates (+5.98%), and homebuilders responded in a big way.
Conversely, Building Permits — a proxy for March came down to +1.372 million seasonally adjusted, annualized units from February’s big jump to +1.54 million, and the lowest figure since August of last year. March is a key month here: that’s when the bombings of Iran started. Even though homebuilders were gaining momentum on lowered mortgage rates, uncertainty due to the war saw Permits — which usually go up in the spring months — take a tumble.
The Advanced U.S. Trade Deficit came in slightly lower than expectations: -$87.9 billion. This is the deepest level of 2026 so far, but still thankfully well off the all-time low -$135 billion we saw in March of 2025, directly before President Trump’s “Liberation Day” of massive global tariffs (which lasted one week).
Preliminary numbers on Advanced Retail Inventories blossomed to +0.7% in March from +0.1% expected, while Wholesale Inventories jumped +100 basis points (bps) from expectations to +1.4%, and 50 bps above the previous month’s +0.9%. These are both metrics that will add to quarterly GDP, albeit the “worst” sort of economic growth, as it anticipates sales that may or may not materialize.
Q1 Earnings at a Glance: PSX, ABBV, BIIB & Mag 7 Later
This may be the longest word-count for “Ahead of Wall Street” on record, as we’re just now getting to Q1 earnings ahead of the open. With this in mind, we’ll merely spot-check some key earnings data this morning:
Big Pharma mainstay AbbVie ABBV beat estimates by 3 cents per share to $2.65 on its bottom line and bumped up its guidance, but shares are flat on the news, even after falling -13% year to date.
Oil refiner Phillips 66 PSX posted a huge +189% earnings beat — +$0.49 per share versus -$0.55 in the Zacks consensus — on higher refining margins, largely based on oil price hikes from the Iran war. These shares are flat, as well, but +28% year to date.
Biotech giant Biogen BIIB posted a +21% earnings beat this morning — $3.57 per share versus $2.95 anticipated — while also outperforming on its top line. Shares are up +2% on the news, adding to the stock’s +4% growth from the start of the year.
After the closing bell today, Microsoft MSFT is expected to have growth +17.6% on its bottom line and +16.2% on its top. Meta Platforms META looks to have grown +4.35% on year-over-year earnings and +31.15% on revenues. Amazon AMZN anticipates a more modest +0.63% earnings growth and +14.24% on the top line. Alphabet GOOGL, with its massive capex spending on AI infrastructure, is projected to come in -6% on earnings and +20.6% on revenues.

That was fantastic news for Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) and General Motors (NYSE: GM) because a dirty little secret is that crossovers, SUVs, and trucks cost only marginally more to manufacture than sedans, and they fetch average transaction prices 2 to 3 times higher and carry much better margins. Unfortunately for automakers and investors, there is evidence suggesting that trend could be reversing -- and now Ford and GM face a massive dilemma.
Ford and GM appear to be shifting into reverse
The average consumer may not pay attention to an automaker's product lineup, but investors should. A newer lineup sells better at higher transaction prices and represents the future sales pipeline. Take Ford, for instance: The folks at the Blue Oval were all too happy to almost entirely get rid of their sedan product lineup in the U.S. market when consumers favored SUVs and trucks. In fact, in 2026, Ford offered a very limited selection of traditional sedans following the discontinuation of popular models such as the Fusion, Fiesta, Focus, and even Taurus. The lone survivor is Ford's iconic Mustang.

Of course, with fewer compelling sedan options in the market, and new-car prices rising seemingly endlessly, remaining sedans are having a resurgence. The pragmatic Japanese brands are taking advantage of this with Toyota Camry sales up 11% during the first quarter, Honda Accord sales up 22%, and Kia's K5 sales up 19%. It was the first quarter in nearly a decade that Toyota's Camry was the brand's top seller, beating out the popular RAV4 crossover.
"The sedan market is very vibrant," Ford CEO Jim Farley told reporters at the Detroit Auto Show in January, according to Automotive News. "It's not that there isn't a market there. It's just we couldn't find a way to compete and be profitable. Well, we may find a way to do that."
Ford's crosstown rival may be a step ahead already. It was first reported by GM Authority that GM plans to introduce a Buick sedan to the U.S. market. This would be the first Buick sedan offered in North America since 2020. It's rumored to be built on the same platform as the next-generation Cadillac CT5 and Camaro.
Insert dilemma for these automakers
That sets up a dilemma for Detroit automakers that have long dominated SUVs and trucks and enjoyed the juicy margins those segments bring. On one hand, focusing on the more profitable SUV/truck segments they dominate is solid business. On the other hand, giving up incremental sales as sedans gain market share leaves money on the table.
Another variable is that vehicles are becoming more defined by software and include more driverless vehicle technology. Those features and options should make sedans more profitable, especially as automakers work in subscription business models. However, another dilemma is that those technologies may make sedans more profitable to Ford and GM but less affordable and thus less in demand. The answer is far from clear, but it's absolutely something investors should pay attention to, as these are exactly the decisions that can and will change the bottom line in the years ahead.

Ford and GM Face Massive Dilemma as Lucrative Trends Shift Again

Like it or not, CEO pay in America continues to rise in comparison to the average employee. It's viewed as necessary to attract top talent in a highly competitive industry and to align shareholders' interests with management in creating long-term value through better product development, increasing market share, operational improvements to grow margins, and others.

How much are we talking?
Mary Barra earned $29.9 million last year, which was a total compensation package worth a modest 1.4% more than the prior year, according to a company filing. The modest increase was largely due to base salary and stock awards being nearly offset by nonequity incentive plan compensation falling 26% down to almost $5 million. Barra's base salary has been consistent at $2.1 million for a few years, and last year her stock awards jumped 11% to $21.6 million, the bulk of the compensation package.
Devin Wenig, chairman of GM's compensation committee, wrote in the SEC filing:
Together, the targets we set for our 2025 compensation program were intended to incentivize management to navigate uncertainty, continue to make great products that our customers love, and drive improved profitability. We believe that these clear and challenging targets rewarded management for delivering results that are fully aligned with our shareholder interests.
The one graph that can justify Barra's pay is a simple one, but it shows the progress GM has made in navigating uncertain trade policy, tariff changes, volatile electric vehicle (EV) demand, and many other speed bumps along the way.
GM has drastically outperformed rivals over the past three years, nearly tripling its closest competitor and trivializing Ford Motor Company's modest gain and/or Stellantis' 50% drop in value. It even greatly outpaced gains at Ferrari, which by many accounts remains one of the top auto investments out there.
Comparison check
Barra's compensation topped that of her closest rival, Ford Motor Company's CEO Jim Farley. Farley's total compensation jumped 11% last year to just over $27.5 million, which was the highest payout he has received since taking over the automaker in October 2020.
It's fair to note that Farley's payout increased at a time Ford reached only 64% of its earnings targets and rather reached the maximum of 200% of quality goals related to newer vehicles (with zero to three months in service).
That could have some investors scratching their heads, as Ford's number of recalls last year set historical records, and quality has been a consistent problem over recent years, even hindering earnings once in a while due to spikes in warranty costs.
For context, Ford obliterated the previous all-time record for the number of recalls, with 153 such campaigns, a record investors would rather leave in the dust. Ford's recalls covered nearly 13 million Ford and Lincoln vehicles, which was drastically larger than Toyota's and Stellantis' 3.2 million and 2.8 million vehicles, respectively. According to Ford, however, the company's internal metrics indicate the automaker is making significant progress on newer vehicles while mounting recalls are from older vehicles in the national fleet.
High-end CEO talent gets paid the big bucks; that much is clear. There are many ways to justify it, but it all comes down to aligning shareholder interests with management. GM has been performing incredibly well in just about any metric and has returned immense value with tens of billions in share buybacks in recent years. Investors might not like the high compensation packages, or perhaps it's a nonfactor, but GM's stock performance speaks for itself on the matter.
