Ford Motor Company develops, delivers, and services a range of Ford trucks, commercial cars and vans, sport utility vehicles, and Lincoln luxury vehicles worldwide. It operates through Ford Blue, Ford Model e, and Ford Pro; Ford Next; and Ford Credit segments. The company sells Ford and Lincoln vehicles, service parts, and accessories through distributors and dealers, as well as through dealerships to commercial fleet customers, daily rental car companies, and governments. It also engages in vehicle-related financing and leasing activities to and through automotive dealers. In addition, the company provides retail installment sale contracts for new and used vehicles; and direct financing leases for new vehicles to retail and commercial customers, such as leasing companies, government entities, daily rental companies, and fleet customers. Further, it offers wholesale loans to dealers to finance the purchase of vehicle inventory; and loans to dealers to finance working capital and enhance dealership facilities, purchase dealership real estate, and other dealer vehicle programs. The company was incorporated in 1903 and is based in Dearborn, Michigan.

Huge News for GM Stock, Tesla Stock, and Ford Stock Investors

Ford Motor Company’s F primary aluminum supplier in New York has resumed operations at its hot mill following two fires last year that shut down the facility and contributed to billions of dollars in lost production for Ford’s highly profitable F-Series pickup lineup.
The Novelis facility in Oswego, NY, is the largest U.S.-based supplier of automotive-grade aluminum sheet. A fire on Sept. 16, 2025, halted the rolling line of Novelis that produced aluminum sheets, while a second fire on Nov. 20, 2025, caused further damage to both the rolling equipment and parts of the plant. The aluminum sheets manufactured there are used to produce vehicle components such as hoods, fenders and other exterior body panels.
The disruption had a significant impact on Ford, which relies on aluminum body construction for its F-150 pickup, the best-selling vehicle in the United States for decades. The resulting aluminum shortage reduced the automaker’s truck inventory levels at dealerships ahead of the typically strong summer selling season.
Per Ford spokesperson Dave Tovar, the restart marks an important step forward, but it also highlights the challenges many automotive suppliers continue to face. Ford remains focused on working closely with suppliers to strengthen long-term supply chain resilience.
Per Ford CEO Jim Farley, the company currently has a solid supply of finished aluminum. F-Series inventory stands at roughly a 50-day supply nationwide, which is somewhat below Ford’s preferred level for trucks, but production is ramping up steadily, and the company expects a strong performance in the second half of the year.
Ford uses lightweight aluminum in its truck bodies to help improve fuel efficiency. The Novelis fires forced Ford to temporarily suspend production of the all-electric F-150 Lightning at its Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn due to insufficient aluminum supplies. The company also briefly halted production of the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs at its Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville. In addition, the shortage constrained the output of the gasoline-powered F-150, which is assembled at Ford’s Dearborn Truck Plant and Kansas City Assembly Plant in Claycomo, Missouri.
Overall, Ford estimates it lost approximately 100,000 units of truck production in 2025 because of the supply disruption. To recover from last year’s inventory shortfall, the automaker plans to build an additional 50,000 trucks this year, targeting total production of about 150,000 units.
Per Ford, the aluminum shortage and manufacturing disruptions caused by the fires are projected to have a financial impact of between $1.5 billion and $2 billion through 2026. How did the Novelis Outage Impact Its Other Customers?
Stellantis N.V. STLA was also affected by the Novelis fire, leading the automaker to temporarily suspend production of the Jeep Grand Wagoneer at its Warren, MI, assembly plant. The Wagoneer lineup relies extensively on aluminum components supplied by Novelis, including key body panels such as the hood and doors. As a result of the supply disruption, production at the Warren facility was halted on Oct. 13, 2025, and remained idle until operations resumed during the week of Nov. 3, 2025.
General Motors Company GM experienced only limited disruption from the Novelis fire, largely due to the supply chain risk management practices it developed after the 2011 tsunami and Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan. That event exposed weaknesses in GM’s business continuity planning and prompted the company to adopt a more strategic approach to supply chain resilience. As a result, GM was better positioned to identify potential disruptions, assess supplier exposure and respond more effectively to supply chain challenges, helping it avoid the significant production impacts seen at some of its peers.
F’s Price Performance, Valuation and Estimates
Ford has outperformed the Zacks Automotive-Domestic industry in the last six months. Its shares have gained 3.9% against the industry’s decline of 4.9%.

From a valuation perspective, F appears undervalued. Going by its price/sales ratio, the company is trading at a forward sales multiple of 0.33, lower than the industry’s 3.48.

An AI play overlooked for decades
While most investors associate Caterpillar with construction and mining machinery, management sees a lucrative technology opportunity developing with AI: its potential to generate a new revenue stream at higher margins than its traditional business.
The company sells enormous engines, turbines, and generator sets that AI data centers use for both primary and continuous backup power, giving it a faster-growing revenue stream. As you can see in the graphic below, Wall Street has taken notice, and the stock has soared over the past year.
If you missed out on the one-year surge in Caterpillar shares, there is still growth to be had. "We think [this] is more of a 2027/2028 story than a 2025/2026 story," Citigroup analyst Kyle Menges says, according to Barron's.
What most investors probably aren't aware of is that the company has an autonomous-mining fleet that's one of the largest and most proven in the world. Management's research on autonomous machines started decades ago, and now the company is taking it a step forward after unveiling multiple intelligent-product lines that will include autonomous excavators, loaders, hauling trucks, bulldozers, and compactors driven by a rise in AI.
Caterpillar is an intriguing mix of potential with its products becoming more powerful for its clients through AI and autonomy, while it also benefits from faster-growing segments due to increasing energy and storage demand.
The icing on the cake is that Caterpillar also offers investors safety: It has paid a cash dividend every year since it was formed, a quarterly dividend since 1933, and a higher annual dividend for 32 consecutive years.
Under the radar
Similar to Caterpillar, Ford's most-hyped business right now has absolutely nothing to do with producing vehicles. Unbeknownst to many, Ford has spent most of the past year building the foundation for Ford Energy. Ford Energy is a wholly owned subsidiary of the company and will provide battery energy storage systems (BESS) for data centers and other large industrial customers in the U.S.
The Detroit automaker's flagship product, named the Ford Energy DC block, is a 20-foot containerized BESS that comes in two configurations designed to provide its customers with predictable lifetime performance, from a company that is stable enough to assure that it will be around for servicing if necessary.
Ford plans to invest roughly $2 billion into its energy business initially, and after working quietly to build out its supply chains and manufacturing sites, it aims to start deliveries in late 2027. Morgan Stanley estimates Ford Energy could generate between $500 million to $600 million of run-rate earnings before interest and taxes at 20 gigawatt hours of production capacity.
Like Caterpillar, Ford offers a measure of safety with a dividend that sits at a 4% yield. And in recent years when cash flow is strong, it's often boosted by a supplemental dividend.
What it all means
Besides rapidly changing the way many businesses operate, AI also offers opportunities for companies that can power its significant demand for energy and its storage. Investors could blindfold themselves and throw a dart and land on any number of projections that suggest the AI data center market and global power demand are expected to surge over the next decade.
And while many will continue to overlook Ford's and Caterpillar's ties to AI and energy, savvy investors understand their potential to generate new revenue streams, higher margins, and potentially better valuations.

At one time, the sedan market accounted for 50% of new-car sales, but that share has consistently declined to the mid-teens as America's appetite for larger SUVs and trucks has increased. At the time, Ford's profitability on sedans was questionable, so moving production capacity and capital investment to larger, more profitable vehicles made sense.
Fast-forward to today, and things have changed yet again. Ford is planning to get back into the sedan segment in the U.S., but why, and what does that mean for its bottom line?

What's going on with Ford?
Ford spent many years away from producing lower-average-transaction-price (ATP) and more affordable compact cars, such as the Fiesta, Focus, and Fusion, in favor of higher-margin SUVs. That worked really well for Ford, and the company would go on to produce some of its most profitable years on record, including 2015, which was its all-time peak in net income driven by -- you guessed it -- surging F-Series and SUV sales.
Things have changed again, thanks in part to rising gasoline prices, but more importantly, new-car prices are hovering near $50,000 on average. That's created a U.S. consumer base screaming for more affordable options, opening the door for the folks at the Blue Oval to reconsider segments left in the rearview mirror.
What's Ford's plan?
Here's what Andrew Frick, the president of Ford Blue and Model e, told Automotive News:
We have a really great Mustang that people consider a car. We look to expand on the Mustang family as we move forward. I think, for us to do it, it's going to have to make sense within our portfolio. It's going to have to make sense within a family that we may already offer. And it's going to have to be very cost-effective for us to do it.
It's important for investors to note that Ford isn't flipping the entire playbook. In Ford's attempt to attack the affordability crisis, it plans to launch five new vehicles priced below $40,000, and yes, one of those will be a traditional four-door car. It's possible the new sedan will be an all-electric four-door built on the company's Universal EV Platform, which will significantly reduce costs and enable better profitability at price ranges that were historically very challenging.
What it all means for investors
For investors worried about margin pressure due to reentering the sedan market, it shouldn't be the concern it once was. Ford is targeting 8% adjusted EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) margins by 2029, up from about 3.6% in 2025, as the company phases out less profitable models, increases the usage of its Universal EV Platform, grows scale with upcoming higher-volume and more affordable EVs, and more broadly brings down structural costs to be more in line with competitors.
The U.S. auto consumer is demanding more affordable options, and the market for sedans remains, creating an opportunity for Ford to adjust its product portfolio and find equilibrium while improving profitability. These are all good things for long-term investors.

Investors looking for exposure to the changing automotive landscape must decide between legacy reliability and high-growth potential when choosing between Ford Motor (NYSE:F) and Rivian Automotive (NASDAQ:RIVN) for their portfolios.
Ford Motor operates as a global powerhouse with a massive internal combustion engine business while it pivots toward electrification and software services. Rivian Automotive is a pure-play electric vehicle manufacturer focused on premium consumer trucks and commercial delivery vans. The case for Ford Motor

The case for Rivian Automotive
Rivian Automotive produces high-end electric trucks and SUVs designed for outdoor adventure alongside its commercial electric delivery vans. A significant portion of its commercial business depends on Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN), which holds approximately 12.7% of the company's voting power as of December 2025. This customer concentration means the loss of business from its primary partner could have a material adverse effect on its long-term financial stability.
During FY 2025, revenue reached nearly $5.4 billion, reflecting growth of roughly 8.4% as the company scaled its manufacturing operations. However, the business recorded a net loss of approximately $3.6 billion, resulting in a negative net margin of roughly 67.7%. While still in the red, this was an improvement over the negative 95.5% net margin reported in the previous fiscal year.
According to its December 2025 balance sheet, the company has a debt-to-equity ratio of approximately 1.5x, calculated by dividing total debt by shareholders’ equity. Its current ratio is roughly 2.3x, suggesting a comfortable cushion for meeting short-term financial obligations with liquid assets. Free cash flow for the year was negative $2.5 billion, as the company continues to invest heavily in its production facilities and new vehicle platforms.
Risk profile comparison
Ford Motor faces significant pressure from the high cost of raw materials and battery components needed to achieve its electrification goals. The company remains under intense scrutiny from regulators like the NHTSA, which has imposed civil penalties and oversight related to safety recalls. Furthermore, competition from Chinese manufacturers and established rivals in theglobal marketcreates a risk that its market share could erode in key regions.
Rivian Automotive relies heavily on its relationship with Amazon for a large percentage of its revenue, yet the partner has no minimum purchase requirements. The company also faces challenges in scaling manufacturing at its Illinois factory, where production levels have historically remained below full capacity. Additionally, its reliance on a joint venture with Volkswagen for software development means any failure to integrate these complex systems could delay vehicle launches.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?
It’s harder to see two more different automaker stocks to choose from, but both have some positive similarities. For one, each has sizable annual sales. That’s notable given how many EV automakers came to the stock market with no sales or minimal revenue since 2020. Each are U.S. based businesses which helps with taxes and market positioning in the U.S., the second-largest car market in the world, after China. Both Ford and Rivian also continue to post excellent scores on consumer perception of their respective brands and for quality.
Ford does have some advantages over Rivian. For one, Ford has long established itself in mainland China, the world’s largest automotive market. Ford’s China sales, including exports, topped $900 million in 2025. Ford is also a well-established name in Europe, another of the world’s major car markets. The business also has massive scale, with revenue more than 35 times that of Rivian. That gives Ford the cash flow to make major moves in the marketplace if it wants, such as buying minority positions in foreign automakers, something it has done to good effect in the past.
Yet investors seeking long-term profits in the automotive sector may be better served by investing in Rivian. Despite policy efforts to promote combustion engines in the U.S., EVs continue to grow as a share of the market. EVs accounted for ~8% of all auto sales domestically last year, nearly double from four years prior. Outside the U.S., EVs are expected to account for one of every four autos sold worldwide this year. Rivian doesn’t yet sell outside the U.S. and Canada, but it’s fertile ground for expansion.
Ford, meanwhile, has to balance maintaining its existing combustion engine business with funding the expansion of its toehold in EVs. It’s not always easy, as seen in the company’s recent decision to mothball its electric F-150 model.
While Rivian is still unprofitable, its cash burn has slowed significantly in recent years, and the business has more cash on its balance sheet than debt. Its distinctive truck offerings and sterling brand positioning as the other American EV maker, an alternative to the controversial Elon Musk-led Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA), give it a clear brand identity in consumers’ minds.

What is the big Ford energy pivot?
There were rumors that Ford may enter the energy business. On May 11, Ford formally launched Ford Energy, which will operate as a subsidiary of the parent company.
Ford Energy will battery energy storage systems (BESS) for data centers, utilities, and large industrial customers. Operations cover the full battery cell manufacturing process, from the production of electrode coils to module assemble and after-sales service.
While investors were fretting over Ford's loss-making electric vehicles (EV) business -- the Model e unit posted $4.8 billion in operating loss in fiscal year 2025 -- recalls costs, and choppy cash flows, the company was working behind the scenes, building BESS manufacturing sites and securing supply chains.
Ford has repurposed its existing EV battery manufacturing plant in Kentucky to build BESS as it strives to enter a red-hot market. The AI boom has suddenly put massive pressure on existing power grids, forcing data center operators and utilities to secure more flexible power solutions and increasingly rely on large-scale storage to manage peak demand and grid instability.
Ford Energy's flagship product, the Ford Energy DC block, is a standardized 20-foot containerized BESS that can last 20 years.
Within a week of launch, Ford Energy signed a five-year agreement with EDF power solutions to provide up to 4 gigawatt hours (GWh) of DC BESS annually, with a total potential volume of up to 20 GWh over the term of the agreement. Ford expects first deliveries to begin in 2028.
Should you buy Ford stock now, or wait?
Analysts have high expectations for Ford Energy, with Morgan Stanley analyst Andrew Percoco valuing the business at $10 billion. Ford's licensing agreement with Chinese battery maker CATL is touted as a significant competitive advantage, as it allows Ford to license battery technology and carve out a space in the BESS market.
The rally in Ford stock, however, means some of the initial optimism is already baked into the current stock price. That explains why the automotive stock has hit the brakes in June, with shares already falling 14% so far this month, as of this writing.
The pullback serves as a stark reminder that despite its new energy business, Ford is still tied to the traditional auto market. Right now, its car sales are far from impressive. In May, Ford's total vehicle sales dropped 13.6% compared to last year, with EVs leading the decline with a 44% drop. Hybrids also slipped nearly 16%, while standard gas-powered vehicles fell 12%.
By pivoting underutilized EV battery capacity toward battery storage, Ford is essentially trying to catch the AI wave. I believe that's a really smart move, but I wouldn't expect Ford to always trade like a hyper-growth tech company. The energy business, however, could provide a solid cushion against a weak auto business, especially if it is as profitable as many expect. That's one gamble investors may want to make for this 4%-yielding stock.

Even after its huge surge, the valuation remains low. Ford shares trade at a current P/E multiple of 11.3. This represents a 56% discount to the broader S&P 500 index.
But investors shouldn't rush to buy what they think might be a compelling value stock.
Ford's earnings have historically been low, which adds material financial risk because the company can face cyclical demand. In a recession or any other situation that pushes households to delay car purchases, sales can decline. And Ford might start to post net losses.
This can force management's hand to conserve critical financial resources. The quarterly payout could be reduced or paused until the macro backdrop improves. This isn't a concern with companies generating robust profits.

Even so, shares have gained nearly 30% over the past month after the company announced the formation of a new Ford Energy subsidiary. Ford is trying to tap into surging demand for energy solutions from AI data center operators with battery storage systems.

But the stock may have gotten ahead of itself on that news. It didn't help that Ford's May sales numbers weren't impressive, either.
Ford still sells cars
While the company might have ambitious plans and solid prospects for Ford Energy, the company still needs to do well at what it does best. Investors bidding the stock higher over the last month got hit with a dose of reality with the company's May sales release this week.
Ford's overall vehicle sales, including its Lincoln brand, slid nearly 14% last month compared with last year. The affordable Maverick pickup truck remained popular, but sales of most other models were disappointing. Hybrids remain popular with car buyers, but Ford's hybrid segment reported a 15.7% drop. Competitors, including Hyundai and Kia, saw electrified models surge in May.
The excitement surrounding Ford's new push into energy storage systems may have faded this week. But if that segment reports strong customer interest, this dip may be a good entry point for Ford stock.

But give Ford credit for turning lemons into lemonade. The company is using its EV assets to build battery energy storage systems (BESS) for data centers, utilities, and other industrial customers. This new subsidiary, called Ford Energy, has investors racing to buy the stock.

Shares have raced higher, soaring 55% over the past year to prices Ford hasn't seen in four years. It makes for a fascinating story, but one that investors probably shouldn't participate in at this point. Here's why it makes sense to pass on Ford stock right now.
Ford Energy is giving the company a spark
Data centers are popping up faster than the electrical grid can keep up. Many companies are turning to on-site power generation and energy storage.
A few weeks ago, Ford announced a five-year deal to supply EDF Power Solutions with up to 4 gigawatt-hours (GWH) of annual storage capacity, beginning in 2028. The company's goal was to supply at least 20 GWH annually, so this deal essentially represents about 20% of Ford Energy's planned capacity over five years. It's a very big score.
Wall Street seems to like what it's seeing. Morgan Stanley recently valued Ford Energy at $10 billion, which helped ignite the stock's recent surge. Even at Ford's higher price, that $10 billion puts the energy storage business at about 15% of the company's total market cap. Not bad for what was initially an enormous loss.
But a slowing core business should keep investors up at night
Morgan Stanley's favorable view of Ford Energy hinges on its likelihood of winning more deals with its licensed technology and potential upside from energy storage tax credits. That's all great, but investors should remember that this business is still a year or two away from making a meaningful financial impact.
In the meantime, Ford makes its money from vehicle sales, and sales dropped 14% in April compared with the prior year. It's a challenging market right now. Gas prices have soared since the war broke out in Iran. Consumer sentiment has dropped, as people struggle with higher living expenses. Lastly, there's an ongoing aluminum shortage that's disrupted production of the F-150, arguably Ford's most important vehicle.
One-time tariff reimbursements juiced Ford's profits in the first quarter of 2026, but it wouldn't be a shock if that momentum faded over the next several quarters as economic reality sets in. Only about a quarter of the 24 Wall Street analysts on CNN Business have a buy rating on Ford.
Ford Energy has made the stock exciting again. However, there's far more to like about the long term than right now, and for that reason, this rally isn't worth chasing.

Ford Stock Is Off to the Races. Can Its 55% Rally Continue?

(RTTNews) - Ford Motor Co (F) is recalling almost 420,000 vehicles in the U.S. because of a problem with the seat belts that could be risky in a crash. They've also put out a separate warning advising owners not to drive certain Maverick pickup trucks and Bronco Sport SUVs due to issues with the steering.
This major recall involves specific 2018-2022 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator models. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that the seat belts in these vehicles might lock unexpectedly, making it difficult for them to retract or extend.
If the seat belts don't work right, they may not hold passengers securely during a crash, which raises the chances of injury. Ford mentioned they're aware of at least one injury that might be connected to this issue. Notifications will be sent out to owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the seat belt retractors at no cost.
In a related situation, Ford has issued a do-not-drive warning for 4,653 affected Bronco Sport SUVs and Maverick trucks. The company indicated that the ball joints in the front lower control arms may have been incorrectly installed or repaired, which could let the control arm detach from the steering knuckle, leading to a loss of steering control.
Although Ford hasn't reported any accidents or injuries connected to this steering issue, they found several warranty claims that led to the recall.
Dealers will check and fix the impacted parts for free, and Ford is providing towing assistance and rental vehicles as necessary. They've advised owners of the affected Maverick and Bronco Sport vehicles to avoid driving them until the repairs are made.
