Evolution of sales
Carvana is no stranger to growth after the company pumped major capital into its early expansion plans. Although Carvana has its notable and unique car vending machines, the used-car retailer primarily did business online. That's changing as the company evolves. Carvana scooped up yet another Stellantis dealership last week in its evolution to a hybrid sales model of online and in-person.
When investors scratch the surface, it seems like a fine strategy. While people adapted to the online vehicle sales method, and some even preferred it, Carvana knew there were still consumers only reachable through in-person visits. Buying dealerships not only reaches these consumers, it opens doors to new-vehicle sales, which come with higher margins.
These dealership locations also expand the company's distribution network with these six largely U.S. Southwestern stores. Previously, Carvana's network was heavier on the U.S. East Coast. It also secures Carvana a valuable pipeline of trade-in and off-lease vehicles, which it can then refurbish, certify, and resell.
Carvana could have scooped up dealerships of any automaker or brand, for the most part, which signals that it's betting on Stellantis to have a turnaround and become more relevant again. But should investors make a similar investment?
Not so fast
Before investors are quick to jump aboard a potential Stellantis turnaround, it's wise to glance at a number of challenges facing the company.
First, it should be noted that Stellantis is coming with some financial struggles. One example is the automaker's recent roughly $26 billion charge late in 2025 for a major electric vehicle (EV) strategy adjustment. That had ripple effects on the company, including a massive drop in stock price and a suspended dividend. In fact, for context, that massive charge is larger than the automaker's current market capitalization, which sits at roughly $20 billion.
Another challenge facing Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa is navigating through the company's large portfolio of 14 automotive brands. These include a Detroit heartbeat with Jeep, Ram, and Chrysler, and Italian flair with Fiat and Alfa Romeo -- though the latter two seem to lack global synergy. Stellantis'global marketshare has fallen from 8.1% in 2020 to roughly 6.1% in 2025, according to S&P Global Mobility, and some Stellantis brands require significant investment to revive sales.
One of Stellantis' largest challenges will be reviving its North American business core, where high prices, poor product mix, and neglected brands caused not only a sales collapse but turmoil between the automaker and its dealership network. The automaker is pumping a roughly $13 billion investment into the business to reintroduce more gasoline-powered and hybrid models to recapture share. But that could put it even further behind rivals in the evolution toward electric vehicles.
Carvana's strategy to scoop up Stellantis dealerships would work better if the automaker can turn its business around, but it's not absolutely necessary. For investors, Stellantis might be opportunity knocking, but it's not yet time to answer the door.

An Interesting Big Name Is Betting on a Stellantis Turnaround -- Should You?

Automakers such as Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) have a seemingly impossible task balancing massive global operations, product portfolios on delicate schedules, suppliers near and far, among many other factors. These companies don't simply change strategic direction on a dime. Decisions and adjustments can take years and can be incredibly expensive, as Ford investors found out during the fourth quarter with a roughly $19.5 billion charge driven by electric vehicle (EV) strategy adjustments.

Mistakes are costly
Already the folks at the Blue Oval have ended production of the current form all-electric F-150 Lightning, one of Ford's only three core EV products currently. Those three vehicles being the Mustang Mach-E, the former F-150 Lightning, and E-Transit commercial van EV. Keep in mind that Ford has a broader plug-in hybrid portfolio, but until another push in full EVs begins in 2027 this is what Ford is working with.
Ford plans to replace the F-150 Lightning with the previously mentioned EREV, and that major decision drove Ford's roughly $19.5 billion in special charges during the fourth quarter, sinking its bottom line to a $11.1 billion net loss for the quarter. Beyond the massive charge primarily surrounding this strategic change, investors are right to question whether this is money-making move.
How EREVs work
Automakers in North America as well as Europe are giving a second look to EREVs as a lighter and lower-cost alternative to full EVs, especially after EREVs have gained significant traction in China led by domestic brands such as Li Auto.
One reason is because unlike hybrids, an EREV doesn't have a physical connection between the combustion engine and drive axle. Rather the vehicle's engine is used as a charging source when the battery depletes. This design reduces weight, allows for a smaller and less costly battery, and improves fuel economy significantly.
There's a legitimate cost argument to be made in favor of EREVs. As consultancy McKinsey pointed out, the smaller batteries can shave a significant $6,000 off in powertrain production costs compared to full EVs. Once automakers design a platform, even a full electric platform, it's not as difficult or expensive as one would think to plop a combustion engine on top, and it gives automakers a different option as traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) platforms fade away.
Of course, on the flip side, there are trade-offs and Mercedes-Benz is one example of an automaker tossing out the idea after its EREV trials. The German automaker conceded the technology was more expensive than desired, only provided a short-term benefit, and increased the complexity for maintenance needs.
The next big mistake?
Essentially, EREVs could prove a costly detour on the way to mainstream EV adoption, and the latter can't really afford distractions, dead ends, or kicking the can down the road considering the steep losses most full EVs are incurring. Remember, Ford lost $4.8 billion on its Model-e division, responsible for its EVs, in 2025 alone.
However, Ford is simply not trading its small full EV lineup for a full EREV lineup. This is merely making the best of a tough situation, until the automaker's upcoming Universal EV Platform debuts on a new midsize EV truck in 2027. This won't be a costly detour, or another $19.5 billion mistake, but Ford's next major EV push in 2027 can't begin soon enough -- it needs scale and lowered costs, and fast. Until then, this EREV option gives Ford's F-150 Lightning new life for now.

But the situation is complicated.
The theory isn't new. When gas prices surge, the transition to electric vehicles should accelerate. Whether that theory will translate into action during the current surge in gas prices, however, is still up in the air.
The logic seems straightforward. If gas becomes expensive enough, drivers will naturally look for alternatives. Electric vehicles (EVs), which cost significantly less per mile to operate, offer a clear solution. But the relationship between oil prices and EV adoption isn't quite that simple.

The latest spike in fuel prices, driven by renewed tensions in the Middle East, has once again piqued investor interest. Will this moment in time finally push EV adoption into its next growth phase?
The answer is more nuanced than some headlines suggest.
The devil is in the details
For most people, the decision to purchase an electric vehicle isn't driven by fuel prices alone. Several other factors play a significant role.

First, EVs typically have higher upfront costs than comparable gasoline vehicles, even though their operating costs are lower over time.
Second, charging infrastructure remains uneven. While urban areas increasingly offer robust charging networks, rural regions and smaller cities still present challenges for EV owners.
Third, the number of models available in the United States remains relatively limited compared with traditional internal combustion vehicles.
Taken together, these factors mean that higher gasoline prices may influence consumer thinking, but they do not automatically translate into immediate EV purchases.
That said, if gas prices continue to climb and remain elevated throughout the year, we may see increased interest in EV ownership. Certainly, we saw some evidence of this following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
In Q2, 2021, EVs accounted for 2.7% of new vehicle sales in the U.S. In Q2, 2022, that number jumped to 5.6%. To be sure, the $7,500 federal tax credit was still in place then, but we also know that between February and March 2022, search traffic on CarMax for EVs more than doubled, as did EV test drives, suggesting that consumers actively started exploring EV purchases when prices rose.
Of course, it's still too early to tell how long this war will last, and more importantly, how long gas prices will stay elevated. But if the theory that EV acceptance accelerates during prolonged times of high gas prices is true, then it's worth noting some of the automakers that would likely benefit from that shift. These include primarily automakers with established EV platforms, such as U.S.-based Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA), Rivian (NASDAQ: RIVN), and Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F).
On the other side of the world, Chinese manufacturers have benefited from strong government support, large domestic demand, and control over critical battery materials. Companies such as BYD Company (OTC: BYDDY), Nio (NYSE: NIO), and XPeng (NYSE: XPEV) have expanded rapidly in recent years and are increasingly exporting vehicles to Europe and other global markets.
Perhaps more importantly, Chinese companies have developed highly integrated supply chains, particularly in battery manufacturing. That integration allows them to produce EVs at lower costs than many Western competitors.
If global EV adoption accelerates outside of the U.S. as oil prices increase, Chinese manufacturers will likely remain major beneficiaries, even if the U.S. market grows more slowly.
The whole story
Ultimately, the key question is not simply whether gasoline prices will rise. The question is whether those higher prices will persist long enough to meaningfully change consumers' car-purchasing behavior.
Short-term fuel spikes may grab headlines, but sustained trends tend to drive technological transitions. Electric vehicles are already gaining market share globally, though sales have recently slowed. Higher gasoline prices may accelerate EV sales at the margins, but they are unlikely to be the sole driver.
In the end, electrification is being propelled by a combination of factors: advances in battery technology, government policy, falling manufacturing costs, and evolving consumer preferences.
Indeed, high gas prices are part of that story. Just not the entire story.

Will Higher Gas Prices Really Boost EV Sales?

A few years back, electric vehicles (EV) were one of the hottest themes in investing. Tesla’s success paved the way for many EV pure plays to go public, while legacy automakers committed billions of dollars to shift gears toward electric mobility. It was seen as the next big transformation in autos that would drive future revenue and earnings growth.
But the hype has faded. EVs have proved to be a costly transition, adoption has slowed, and things haven’t quite played out the way many had anticipated. In the United States, the EV market has struggled to hold momentum, partly due to weaker government support. The Trump administration rolled back incentives and regulations meant to boost EV sales. A key tax credit— worth up to $7,500 for qualifying EVs and plug-in hybrids— expired last September, removing an important demand driver. This has weakened the near-term case for EVs, even though they are still widely considered to be the future of transportation.
In response, many auto giants such as Ford F, General Motors GM and Stellantis STLA have reconsidered their EV strategies and taken write-off charges on related investments that no longer make business sense. The latest casualty is Honda HMC, which announced yesterday that it expects to take charges of up to $16 billion in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026, as it pivots away from EVs.
Interestingly, Honda’s closest peer appears to have largely avoided this situation. That is the Japanese auto titan Toyota TM. The company did not go all in on EVs when the rest of the industry was aggressively investing in the technology, a decision that drew criticism at the time. But that cautious approach now seems to be paying off, as Toyota has not announced any EV write-downs so far.
Surprisingly though, the same automaker is now preparing to double down on EVs at a time when demand remains uncertain. Before discussing its strategy, let’s briefly look at how Ford, General Motors, Stellantis and Honda ended up taking write-offs on their EV bets.
$70B EV Reality Check for F, GM, STLA and HMC
Ford is moving away from its plans to manufacture large EVs. Instead of rolling out expensive, capital-heavy EVs into a reluctant market, Ford will now focus on profitable hybrids and internal combustion vehicles, while narrowing its EV efforts to smaller, lower-cost models. At the center of this shift is Ford’s new Universal EV Platform. Ford’s first vehicle built on the platform will be a midsize electric pickup. Notably, the company has even discontinued the fully electric version of its best-selling F-150 pickup. Ford announced $19.5 billion in EV-reset related charges.
General Motors also responded to slower-than-expected EV demand by selling its stake in the Ultium Cells Lansing plant and pivoting some assembly capacity from EVs back to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. The company took $7.6 billion in charges in the second half of 2025 to reduce EV capacity.
Last month, Stellantis confirmed that it incurred around $25 billion in losses related to EV restructuring in the second half of 2025.Its RAM brand discontinued its planned all-electric pickup. The company is repositioning its North American strategy around conventional hybrids and extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), which offer electric driving with longer range and reduce dependence on charging infrastructure.
Honda, as mentioned earlier, will be taking a massive hit of roughly $16 billion and is now projecting a full-year loss of 340-570 billion yen in fiscal 2026. It has canceled its highly anticipated 0 Series SUV and sedan just months before planned production, shifting its focus toward developing more competitive hybrid models while expanding its motorcycle business to strengthen profitability.
With that, the cumulative EV-restructuring losses for these four automakers come to roughly $70 billion.
Toyota Expands EV Push As Rivals Retreat
For years, Toyota prioritized hybrids over fully electric vehicles and was often viewed as one of the slowest legacy automakers to embrace BEV technology. Until the start of this year, the brand had only one EV offering in the U.S. market — the Toyota bZ.
That is now changing. Toyota is expanding its battery-electric lineup in the United States, with additions such as the Toyota Highlander EV, Toyota bZ Woodland and Toyota C???HR EV, per Autoblog. The new lineup spans multiple segments— from compact SUVs to more lifestyle-oriented crossovers— helping the company target a broader group of buyers.
Toyota views this expansion as a natural next step after the success of its hybrid strategy. Hybrid models have grown rapidly. That large base of hybrid customers could eventually become a pipeline of EV buyers.
The company is also trying to manage costs more efficiently. The company is also looking to control EV costs by leveraging its global operations and sourcing batteries from its new North Carolina plant. The Highlander EV will be Toyota’s first three-row electric SUV and also the first Toyota EV assembled in the United States.
At the same time, Toyota is rolling out updated EV models and offering pricing incentives to attract buyers now that the $7,500 federal EV tax credit is no longer available. With longer range, quicker charging and aggressive pricing, Toyota is betting its new EVs can appeal to mainstream buyers at a time when much of the industry is stepping back.
Last Word
In hindsight, Toyota’s reluctance to rush into EVs has saved it from the costly reset now facing several rivals. By holding back earlier, the company now appears to be in a better position to expand its EV push. Whether Toyota’s timing proves right remains to be seen, as EV demand is uneven and policy support uncertain. But if demand picks up again, that positioning could give Toyota an advantage as the next phase of the EV transition unfolds.

Last year was a bit challenging for the U.S. electric vehicle (EV) industry. A combination of factors that include the expiration of federal tax credits, historically higher interest rates, higher prices, and lingering concerns of inadequate charging infrastructure were speed bumps for the industry. In fact, EV registrations fell in 2025 for the first time in a decade.

December plunge
U.S. registration data serves as a proxy for sales, as a number of EV makers, including Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA), don't break out U.S. deliveries from global numbers, and some automakers dont reporton a monthly basis.
Last year, U.S. EV registrations declined for the first time in a decade, dipping just a slight 0.4% below the prior year but a mile behind the growth rates of 11% and 52% in 2024 and 2023, respectively. December registrations quickly spiraled 48% lower compared to the prior year, driven by the expiration of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit. The EV share of the U.S. light-vehicle market fell to 7.8% from the prior year.
There were some notable points in the data for investors, including primarily that Tesla still holds a massive market share lead, despite that share consistently dwindling. Tesla registered over 42,400 vehicles in December, with the next closest competing brands, Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) and General Motors' (NYSE: GM) Cadillac, generating only 5,138 and 3,694 vehicles, respectively.
While Ford remained the No. 2 brand in December, its registrations plunged deeper than the industry's with a 61% decline, driven by the F-150 Lightning, as its production of the vehicle ended that same month. GM's Cadillac EVs posted a rare win with their monthly registrations jumping 12% higher and an even more impressive 73% for the full year 2025.
While the EV industry's challenging 2025 brought more attention to the topic, slowing demand began in 2024. Waning demand was driven by higher EV prices, which pushed many consumers toward hybrid options, and after early adopters joined the market, there were hurdles remaining for mainstream consumers, such as lingering charging infrastructure issues and range anxiety.
To rebound or not to rebound
That is the question. Investors might remember a similar EV share decline in November, when it dropped to 4.6%. These figures might actually give investors confidence for a rebound, because despite December's 48% plunge in registrations, EV market share for the month still edged higher from November to 5.3%.
Tom Libby, an analyst for S&P Global Mobility, suggested investors not expect a sharp rebound: "I think there's going to be a very, very gradual increase going forward," he said, according to Automotive News.
The good news is that charging infrastructure is still improving, and the price gap between gasoline-powered vehicles and EVs is narrowing. Those factors, along with automakers offering discounts and incentives to offset the expiring tax credits, should prevent more declines and support momentum going forward.
What it all means
Investors hoping that the fourth-quarter plunge in EV registrations could present an opportunity for rebounding EV stocks in the near term would be better off taking a step back to view the bigger picture. This is a mere speed bump on the path to EVs growing a significant market share globally over the next decade, but it may not be a quick rebound.
Rather than focusing on albeit large short-term declines in registrations or sales, focus on companies' ability to offset uncertain demand with fresh products and lower prices while supporting margins through material cost reductions and other means. That's the key to finding the next winning EV investment.

EV Investors Hoping for a Rebound Could Be Left Waiting

General Motors Company’s GM strong foundation and disciplined operating approach have significantly strengthened its financial performance in recent years. Over the past five years, the company’s average annual free cash flow (FCF) has increased from approximately $3 billion to $10 billion.
The consistent and robust cash generation has enabled GM to execute all phases of its capital allocation strategy, including investing in the business and its workforce, maintaining a strong balance sheet and returning capital to shareholders. It has allowed the company to increase its quarterly dividend by 20%. GM plans to pursue additional share repurchases.
At the same time, General Motors’ product portfolio has continued to improve, contributing to market share gains of 60 basis points in 2025 while maintaining some of the lowest incentive levels in the automotive industry. This disciplined strategy has been a major driver of the company’s nearly $25 billion in FCF generated over the past two years. During this period, the company invested more than $20 billion in capital projects to support growth in its core operations and advance key strategic priorities.
Looking ahead to 2026 and 2027, General Motors expects to continue this momentum by investing between $10 billion and $12 billion annually. Approximately $5 billion of this investment will be directed toward expanding U.S. manufacturing capacity for several of its highest-demand vehicles while helping the company reduce its exposure to tariffs. How Other Automakers Are Utilizing Their Cash Flows
Ford Motor Company F generated $3.5 billion in FCF and ended 2025 with nearly $29 billion in cash and close to $50 billion in total liquidity. The legacy automaker continues to prioritize maintaining a strong balance sheet, which provides flexibility to invest in growth opportunities, such as Ford Energy, as well as software and physical services. These remain high-margin and high-growth domains for Ford. For 2026, Ford expects adjusted free cash flow between $5 billion and $6 billion, which is roughly $2 billion higher than in 2025.
Rivian Automotive, Inc. RIVN reported a decline in its cash balance to $3.5 billion at the end of 2025 from $5.3 billion in 2024, as the company continues to burn cash while pursuing long-term growth. Additionally, Rivian forecasts capex in the band of $1.95-$2.05 billion (up from $1.7 billion spent in 2025), primarily to complete R2 construction and tooling, begin vertical construction at its new Georgia plant and expand its sales, service and charging network. While these efforts bode well for long-term prospects, they are likely to strain Rivian’s near-term cash flows.
GM’s Price Performance, Valuation and Estimates
General Motors has outperformed the Zacks Automotive-Domestic industry. Its shares have gained 24.6% compared with the industry’s growth of 8.7%.

From a valuation perspective, GM appears undervalued. Going by its price/sales ratio, the company is trading at a forward sales multiple of 0.36, lower than the industry’s 3.36.

How is General Motors Using Strong Cash Flow to Fuel Growth?

Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) has cut back -- or at least, postponed -- many of its big electric vehicle (EV) plans. The company said in December that it was putting off plans for new battery factories and postponing or canceling several planned electric models.
But Ford didn't cancel the program that was arguably at the heart of its EV transition plan: A new low-cost EV platform that will underpin a range of affordable new electric Fords, starting with a pickup truck next year.

Understandably, the changed plans still have some Ford investors confused. Here's what you need to know.
Ford has a new low-cost EV platform -- and a new electric truck coming in 2027
It's called the "Universal EV Platform" and the idea is that it will underpin a range of future electric Fords that should start around $30,000. The platform has been designed from the ground up to be easy to produce (lowering costs) and to work with several different types of vehicles (increasing Ford's economies of scale and lowering costs).
The first Universal EV will be a new midsize electric pickup truck, expected to debut sometime in 2027. The truck is said to have a sleek design that lowers its air resistance, helping it get good range with a smaller battery that will cost less. (Do you see the theme here?)
A pickup truck with 300 miles of range, starting around $30,000
Ford has promised that the truck will have two rows of seats and over 300 miles of range, at a starting price around $30,000. It'll use lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells produced in Michigan. LFP batteries have less power density than the lithium-ion batteries typically used in fancier EVs, but they last a long time -- and they cost less up front. (There's that theme again.)
Speaking of cost, Ford is spending about $5 billion to launch this new platform. That's roughly $3 billion for a new battery plant in Michigan and another $2 billion to rework a factory in Kentucky to make the new EVs.
We know that Ford expects to build several new EVs on its Universal EV Platform. Ford hasn't yet said much about the EVs that will follow the pickup, probably because it's waiting to see how the U.S. EV market evolves over the next few years.
By the way, this upcoming new pickup is not the next F-150 Lightning. Ford has made clear that the next F-150 Lightning will be a bigger, fancier electric truck with a gas engine that serves as an on-board generator (or "range extender," in the industry lingo).
We also know that this new EV pickup won't replace the Ranger or Maverick. It's something new.
I've covered Ford for a long time. Some years ago, I told a group of investors that I had a hard-and-fast rule: Never bet against Ford on a pickup truck, because it's a market Ford knows better than anyone.
I think that still holds. I expect this to be a very well-thought-out, aggressively priced product.
If it's a success, it will set the tone for a range of affordable new EVs from Ford. We'll find out next year.

Ford's Next Generation of Electric Vehicles Is Coming. Here's What Investors Need to Know.

Ford Motor Company F is positioning artificial intelligence (AI) as a core capability across its entire business. Data plays a central role in nearly every aspect of Ford’s operations, including design, engineering, safety testing, manufacturing, marketing, sales and customer support. With more than 120 years of history, the company possesses vast and unique datasets built from decades of vehicle design, engineering insights, connected vehicle information and manufacturing records. This deep data foundation provides a major strategic advantage.
The company’s strategy focuses on treating data as a key corporate asset through its Enterprise Data Platform, which serves as the authoritative source for analytics and AI-driven insights across the organization, according to Franziska (Fran) Bell, chief data, AI and analytics officer at Ford.
Ford is working to integrate AI deeply into its processes rather than using it only in isolated projects. The aim is to create an intelligent ecosystem where data flows seamlessly from early design stages through manufacturing and into the customer ownership experience. Within this system, AI functions as a digital partner that augments human capabilities rather than replacing them. Engineers, designers and business leaders can rely on AI to analyze complex datasets, run simulations and automate repetitive tasks, allowing them to focus more on strategic thinking and creative problem-solving.
To drive this transformation, Ford has launched several major AI initiatives. These include generative AI tools that help designers rapidly produce multiple vehicle concepts, proprietary AI models that dramatically accelerate aerodynamic simulations, AI agents that improve customer support on Ford’s website and AI-assisted code reviews that significantly reduce software development cycles.
One of the company’s AI initiatives is Ford Pro AI, which is capable of tracking and analyzing more than one billion data points per day from connected commercial vehicles. This information includes details such as seatbelt usage, vehicle condition, fuel consumption and route efficiency, enabling a deeper understanding of how vehicles are being operated in real time.
The purpose of this technology is to provide Ford’s 840,000 paying commercial customers with advanced tools that help improve operational efficiency and profitability while minimizing vehicle downtime. By offering clearer insights into fleet performance and business operations, the platform allows companies to make better data-driven decisions regarding their vehicles and logistics. AI Initiatives by Ford’s Peers
Last year, General Motors Company GM announced that the artificial intelligence technology from Google, which underpins its infotainment platform, will allow drivers to interact with their vehicles in a more natural way, similar to having a conversation with another passenger. GM plans to roll out the AI technology broadly across its lineup, with updates expected to reach select vehicles dating back to the 2016 model year, as well as all new models in the United States starting in 2026. The company intends to eventually build its own custom AI systems tailored to its vehicles, though it did not specify a timeline for when that development may be completed.
Tesla TSLA and Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup xAI have recently introduced a joint initiative called “Macrohard” or “Digital Optimus.” Per Reuters, the system is designed to replicate many functions typically carried out by software companies. The project integrates xAI’s Grok, which acts as a high-level navigator, with a Tesla-built AI agent capable of analyzing live computer screen video along with keyboard and mouse activity, per a social media post by Musk. The system is expected to operate using Tesla’s proprietary AI4 chip, combined with NVIDIA-based server infrastructure from xAI. Musk noted that this hardware combination is intended to remain cost-competitive.
F’s Price Performance, Valuation and Estimates
Ford has underperformed the Zacks Automotive-Domestic industry in the last six months. Its shares have gained 3.7% compared with the industry’s growth of 6.7%.

From a valuation perspective, F appears undervalued. Going by its price/sales ratio, the company is trading at a forward sales multiple of 0.28, lower than the industry’s 3.3.

How Is Ford Embedding AI Across Design, Engineering and Sales?

Investors in Ford Motor Co. (Symbol: F) saw new options begin trading today, for the May 1st expiration. At Stock Options Channel, our YieldBoost formula has looked up and down the F options chain for the new May 1st contracts and identified one put and one call contract of particular interest.
The put contract at the $11.50 strike price has a current bid of $1.66. If an investor was to sell-to-open that put contract, they are committing to purchase the stock at $11.50, but will also collect the premium, putting the cost basis of the shares at $9.84 (before broker commissions). To an investor already interested in purchasing shares of F, that could represent an attractive alternative to paying $12.06/share today.
Because the $11.50 strike represents an approximate 5% discount to the current trading price of the stock (in other words it is out-of-the-money by that percentage), there is also the possibility that the put contract would expire worthless. The current analytical data (including greeks and implied greeks) suggest the current odds of that happening are 63%. Turning to the calls side of the option chain, the call contract at the $13.00 strike price has a current bid of $1.57. If an investor was to purchase shares of F stock at the current price level of $12.06/share, and then sell-to-open that call contract as a "covered call," they are committing to sell the stock at $13.00. Considering the call seller will also collect the premium, that would drive a total return (excluding dividends, if any) of 20.81% if the stock gets called away at the May 1st expiration (before broker commissions). Of course, a lot of upside could potentially be left on the table if F shares really soar, which is why looking at the trailing twelve month trading history for Ford Motor Co., as well as studying the business fundamentals becomes important.
