ICICI Bank Ltd.’s IBN profit after tax for the third-quarter fiscal 2026 (ended Dec. 31) was INR113.2 billion ($1.3 billion), down 4% from the prior-year quarter.
Results were hurt by a significant rise in provisions, higher operating expenses and treasury loss. However, rising net interest income (NII) and non-interest income, along with solid loan growth, were tailwinds.
IBN’s NII & Fee Income Improve, Expenses Rise
NII grew 7.7% year over year to INR219.3 billion ($2.4 billion). The net interest margin was 4.30%, up 5 basis points.
Non-interest income (excluding treasury) was INR75.3 billion ($837 million), growing 12.4% year over year. Fee income increased 6.3% to INR65.7 billion ($731 million).
In the reported quarter, IBN incurred a treasury loss of INR1.57 billion ($17 million), against the INR3.71 billion ($41 million) of treasury gains from the previous-year quarter.
Operating expenses were INR119.4 billion ($1.3 billion), up 13.2% year over year.
ICICI Bank’s Loans & Deposits Increase
As of Dec. 31, 2025, ICICI Bank’s total advances were INR14,661.5 billion ($163.1 billion), up 4.1% sequentially. Growth was primarily driven by a solid rise in domestic loans, retail loans, rural loans, business banking loans, domestic corporate and other loans.
Total deposits were INR16,596.1 billion ($184.6 billion), up 3.2% from the prior quarter.
IBN’s Credit Quality: Mixed Bag
As of Dec. 31, 2025, the net non-performing assets (NPA) ratio was 0.37%, which declined from 0.42% in the prior-year period. Recoveries and upgrades (excluding write-offs and sales) of NPAs were INR32.8 billion ($365 million) in the reported quarter.
In the reported quarter, there were net additions of INR20.7 billion ($231 million) to gross NPA. Gross NPA additions were INR53.6 billion ($596 million), while gross NPA written off was INR20.5 billion ($228 million).
Provisions (excluding provision for tax) were INR25.6 billion ($285 million) compared with INR12.3 billion ($136.8 million) from the prior-year quarter.
Capital Ratios Strong for ICICI Bank
In compliance with the Reserve Bank of India's guidelines on Basel III norms, ICICI Bank's total capital adequacy was 17.34%. Tier-1 capital adequacy was 16.46% as of Dec. 31, 2025. Both ratios were well above the minimum requirements.

The stock market will battle three major headwinds in 2026
First, midterm election years are usually difficult for investors. The political party that holds the presidency tends to lose seats in Congress, creating policy uncertainty. In turn, the S&P 500 has suffered an average peak-to-trough decline of 18% during midterm election years. In other words, history says the index will fall 18% from its high at some point in 2026.
Second, the economy is struggling to adapt to President Trump's tariffs. The labor market has weakened substantially; unemployment recently hit a four-year high and jobs growth has dropped to its slowest pace in more than a decade, excluding the pandemic. Also, the University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index recorded its lowest annual average in history last year (data goes back to 1952).
Third, the S&P 500 currently trades at 22.2 times forward earnings, an expensive valuation that (excluding the current situation) has been seen during just two other periods in history. The index topped 22 times forward earnings during the dot-com bubble and the Covid-19 pandemic, and both situations ultimately ended in a sharp decline.
Wall Street thinks the S&P 500 will have a strong year in 2026
Despite the headwinds mentioned, most Wall Street analysts are optimistic about the stock market's potential returns in 2026. The chart below shows year-end targets for the S&P 500 set by different investment banks and research organizations. It also shows the implied upside (or downside) versus the index's current level of 6,858.

As shown, among 19 Wall Street firms, the median year-end target puts the S&P 500 at 7,600 in 2026, implying 11% upside from its current level of 6,858. That is slightly better than the average return of 9% annually (excluding dividends) during the past 40 years.
In general, Wall Street analysts are optimistic because they expect S&P 500 earnings growth to accelerate as companies continue to spend heavily on artificial intelligence (AI). Also, while Federal Reserve officials only signaled one interest rate cut in 2026 at the FOMC meeting in December, the market (and many analysts) think two interest rate cuts is more likely because of the weakening jobs market.
Consider these comments:
Darrell Cronk at Wells Fargo writes, "In 2026, we expect to see artificial intelligence develop further from a concentrated technology phenomenon into a broad-based economic growth catalyst."
Lisa Shalett at Morgan Stanley writes, "A resilient economy and strong corporate earnings are likely to drive continued equity gains in 2026."
Dubravko Lakos-Bujas at JPMorgan writes, "2026 should be another strong year for AI stocks, with capex likely to surpass expectations." He also believes the S&P 500 could top 8,000 if the Fed cuts rates more than twice.
Marc Nachmann at Goldman Sachs writes, "Analysts have underestimated AI capex every quarter for the past two years, suggesting a continued upside risk to the broader AI trade's durability."
As a caveat, Wall Street has a poor track record when it comes to predicting the future movements of the S&P 500. In fact, the return implied by the median year-end forecast missed the mark by 18 percentage points between 2020 and 2024, according to data from Goldman Sachs.
Here's the big picture: Wall Street is optimistic about 2026, particularly where AI stocks are concerned, but investors should not take gains for granted. The S&P 500 typically struggles during midterm election years, and the market is arguably predisposed to volatility this year because of elevated valuations and the uncertainty created by President Trump's tariffs.

Going into 2026, the factors that helped Nvidia soar in 2025 are still in play. And the company's core business is so strong that its $4.63 trillion market cap looks reasonable compared to earnings and growth. That said, the future of the generative AI opportunity is uncertain, which could have negative implications for the stock.

Nvidia's stock is not a bubble
Perhaps the most surprising thing about Nvidia stock is how reasonably priced it is. With a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple of 25, shares are actually slightly cheaper than the Nasdaq-100 estimate of 26 and trade at a sharp discount to other big tech stocks like Amazon and Apple, which boast forward P/Es of 28 and 33, respectively. This fact is even more surprising when you consider Nvidia's explosive growth.
Third-quarter revenue soared 62% year over year to a record of $57 billion, driven by strength in Nvidia's data center segment, where it records sales of its advanced graphics processing units (GPUs) for running and training large language models (LLMs). According to CEO Jensen Huang, sales of the new Blackwell GPUs are "off the charts" with demand accelerating exponentially. Nvidia's margins remain high, and net income soared 65% year over year to $31.9 billion.
Nvidia returns this cash to shareholders through a massive stock buyback program (with $62.2 billion authorized), which will reduce the number of shares outstanding to boost earnings per share (EPS). With numbers like these, Nvidia stock is far from a bubble. In fact, it looks like a fantastic deal going into 2026. But unfortunately, there is a catch.
Nvidia stock isn't a bubble, but the AI industry might be
When an outstanding company like Nvidia trades for a very average valuation, it suggests the market is skeptical about the sustainability of its business. And going into 2026, an increasing number of analysts are getting worried about AI spending in the U.S. economy.
According to Goldman Sachs, AI capital expenditure from hyperscalers (these are essentially cloud computing companies) could climb to an eye-popping $527 billion in 2026. The management of these companies likely believes they will eventually get a return on this spending -- or they simply don't want rivals to get a long-term edge. But it is unclear how much longer shareholders will tolerate these highly speculative outflows when the money could go to other things, like buybacks or dividends.
Meanwhile, there is surprisingly little profit being generated on the consumer side of AI. For example, analysts at Deutsche Bank believe industry leader OpenAI could burn through an eye-popping $143 billion by 2029. The ChatGPT creator's planned initial public offering (IPO) in the second half of 2026 could actually be a significant risk factor for the industry because it could expose the public to the alarming economics behind the AI boom.
As a pick-and-shovel hardware provider, Nvidia will probably be one of the last to feel the impacts of AI uncertainty. It can still win when others lose. But if demand slows, the company's fantastic gross margin of typically more than 70% could begin to come back down to earth.
Will Nvidia stock boom in 2026?
The tech industry has already signaled that it plans to double down on AI-related spending in 2026, which means Nvidia's operational boom will likely continue -- especially as the company releases new products such as the Rubin class of GPUs designed specifically for AI video generation. That said, Nvidia's stock price growth will likely remain modest as investors grapple with the increasingly uncertain future of this new technology.

Will Nvidia Stock Boom in 2026?

Deutsche Bank AG DB has laid out an ambitious but structured plan to lift its return on tangible equity (RoTE) above 13% by 2028. The strategy rests on a combination of revenue growth, tighter cost discipline, capital optimization and higher shareholder payouts.
At the core of DB’s profitability ambitions is top-line expansion. Management expects to achieve incremental revenues of €5 billion ($5.8 billion) by scaling the Global Hausbank across asset gathering, payments servicing and advisory. The company intends to generate €2 billion ($2.3 billion) of its growth in Germany by leveraging home-market leadership across its businesses and capturing opportunities related to fiscal stimulus, structural reforms, private-sector investment and long-term transformation spending.
Deutsche Bank is also placing heavy emphasis on cost control and efficiency gains. The bank has set a target to reduce its cost-income ratio to below 60% by 2028, a notable improvement from earlier medium-term goals. This improvement is expected to come from €2 billion in gross cost efficiencies, driven by process simplification, automation, and increased use of digital and AI-enabled platforms.
Another pillar of Deutsche Bank’s RoTE ambition is strict capital management. The bank intends to maintain its Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) ratio at 13.5-14%, balancing resilience with return optimization. Starting in 2026, DB plans to lift its payout ratio to 60% of net profit attributable to shareholders, up from the current 50% target for 2025. Higher dividends and share buybacks serve two strategic purposes: they enhance shareholder returns directly and reinforce management’s confidence in the sustainability of earnings. By reducing equity through distributions while maintaining earnings growth, payouts also mechanically support higher returns on equity over time.
How Other Financial Firms Are Expected to Fare in Terms of ROTCE
Wells Fargo & Company WFC is aiming for a 17-18% return on tangible common equity (ROTCE) over the medium term, up from the earlier target of 15%. This move underscores the company’s growing confidence in its profitability outlook as it transitions from years of regulatory remediation to a renewed focus on sustainable growth.
Wells Fargo’s upgraded ROTCE target reflects several structural and operational tailwinds. The chief among them is the removal of the Federal Reserve’s asset cap, which now allows Wells Fargo to boost deposits, grow its loan portfolio and broaden its securities holdings.
Meanwhile, Citigroup, Inc. C is advancing its multi-year strategy to streamline operations and focus on its core businesses. Aligned with its goal of achieving leaner operations, Citigroup has overhauled its operating model and leadership structure, reduced bureaucracy and complexity while enhancing efficiency.
Citigroup expects revenue to witness a 4-5% compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) through 2026. The company also anticipates achieving $2-2.5 billion in annualized run-rate savings by 2026, reflecting the tangible benefits of its simplification and efficiency initiatives. Top Analyst Reports for Eli Lilly, Shell & ICICI Bank

Barring an unexpected late-month collapse in the markets, the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) is going to finish this year with a return that's well above its historical average, yet again. As of Dec. 18, the index, which is a collection of the leading companies on U.S. exchanges, is up more than 15%.
Historically, the S&P 500 has averaged returns that are closer to 10%. While this past year wasn't as strong as in 2024 or 2023, when it was up by more than 23%, this has been an incredibly strong three-year period for the stock market. Since 2023, the index has soared by 77%, more than making up for a tough year in 2022 when it fell by 19%.

Heading into next year, however, is it possible for the S&P 500 to deliver double-digit percentage gains yet again, or should investors brace for a slowdown, or even possibly a crash?
Can the S&P 500 outperform its long-run average for a fourth consecutive year in 2026?
Assuming the S&P 500 finishes this year up by 15%, this will be the sixth time in the past seven years, going back to 2019, that it's risen by at least that much. The only blemish was the broad market sell-off that occurred in 2022. To put into perspective just how impressive that is, consider that in the previous seven-year period, from 2012 to 2018, the S&P 500 rose by 15% or more only twice.
Now, if we're looking at just outperforming its long-run average of 10% and assessing how probable it is the streak will continue next year, things don't look particularly encouraging. The last time the S&P 500 was up by at least double digits, for four straight years, was in the late '90s, leading up to the infamous dot-com crash. What may be of some comfort to investors, however, is that back then it was technically on a streak of five years of double-digit gains before the big downturn in the markets. The next occurrence of a four-peat of the S&P 500 beating its average goes back to the early post-war period, 1949 to 1952. Suffice to say, this type of performance for the index is by no means typical.
Top banks remain bullish on the S&P next year
Although historical trends don't appear to suggest that it's probable for the index to rally by 10% or more in 2026, many top banks on Wall Street appear to disagree. For the S&P 500 to climb by another 10%, that would put it at roughly 7,500.
Morgan Stanley believes the index could finish the year as high as 7,800, as does Wells Fargo. Deutsche Bank is among the most bullish, expecting the index to reach 8,000. JPMorgan believes it can reach that milestone, but that's only if rate cuts continue.
What should investors do in 2026?
Although there's still plenty of optimism in the markets, that doesn't mean investors should assume that it will be another fantastic year for the S&P 500 in 2026. Analysts aren't always right; there could very well be a slowdown next year. Many tech stocks, for example, look extremely overpriced. For those types of stocks, there could be significant sell-offs coming in the not-too-distant future, and they could weigh down the index in the process. The hype around artificial intelligence has pushed some stocks to sky-high valuations that simply don't look sustainable.
This is why I believe it's imperative for investors to consider reducing exposure to these types of investments in 2026, and move into safer stocks that at least trade at more modest prices. Crashes and corrections can be difficult if not impossible to predict. And rather than trying to time the market, a more effective way to protect your portfolio in the event of a downturn is to always be cognizant of valuation, and as the old Warren Buffett saying goes, "be fearful when others are greedy."

A rather up-and-down stock lately, satellite technology specialist EchoStar (NASDAQ: SATS) had a good trading session on Friday. Its shares rose by more than 1%, edging past the bellwether S&P 500 index, largely on an analyst's rather generous price target raise.
A bull weighs in with a new take
The person behind the raise was Deutsche Bank (prognosticator Bryan Kraft. Well before market open that day, Kraft elected to boost his fair value assessment on EchoStar to $131 per share, up quite some distance from his previous level of $97.

According to reports, the analyst cited the one top catalyst for EchoStar's recent stock price rises -- its sale of wireless spectrum to Elon Musk's SpaceX -- as a reason to buy the stock. He's particularly encouraged by the coming IPO of the space company, as EchoStar received significant equity in the Musk venture as part of the deal. Meanwhile, the company has more spectrum it could sell.
Other positive factors that should bolster EchoStar, in Kraft's estimation, include anticipated legal settlements with business partners.
Baked in
That SpaceX stake has been drawing investors to EchoStar, as the Musk company is sure to be a hot item when it goes public. Personally, I believe that the potential for these developments is already priced into EchoStar stock, as are the eventual resolutions to the company's legal disputes. I wouldn't necessarily be a buyer of its stock now.

Why EchoStar Stock Crept Higher Today

As of the time of writing, Oracle (NYSE: ORCL) stock is down 19.2% over the last five trading days. The move illustrates growing skepticism over the company's investment in artificial intelligence (AI).
What happened to Oracle
The bond markets are growing concerned with Oracle's ability to finance its AI investments, and not least its $300 billion data center deal with OpenAI. The AI company is committed to renting servers, while Oracle needs to build out the IT infrastructure and lease the data center "shells." As such, its expenditures are focused on GPUs, networking equipment, and power infrastructure, while taking on leases for the land and buildings.

The rise in Oracle's corporate bond yields and the spike in credit default swap (CDS) spreads (a form of insurance against a bond's default), as discussed previously, are signs of stress in the bond markets.
The market is concerned about Oracle's financing situation, with the Wall Street consensus calling for cash outflows of $23.8 billion, $21 billion, and $14.2 billion, respectively, in its financial years from 2026 to 2028. Moreover, there are question marks surrounding OpenAI's future profitability, with Deutsche Bank forecasting a cumulative cash burn of $143 billion for OpenAI from 2024 to 2029.
Oracle problem not an AI problem?
While it's easy to conclude that these fears could and should spill over to the broader AI market, it's worth noting that a peer like Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG), (NASDAQ: GOOGL) is in a different boat for two reasons.
First, despite its substantial ramp in capital spending (the market expects its capital spending to increase from $90.5 billion in 2025 to $131 billion in 2027) , it's still expected to generate a cumulative $225 billion in free cash flow from 2025 to 2028.
Second, Alphabet is largely spending to support its own computing power needs, and ultimately its own business. It can adjust its spending in line with its objectives.
As such, the decline in Oracle's shares appears to be more of an Oracle-specific issue than a broader market one.

There are several different ways to find value stocks. Among these, the most popular are the price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) and price-to-sales ratio (P/S). However, investors often overlook the price-to-book ratio (P/B ratio), which though used less often, is an easy-to-use valuation tool for identifying low-priced stocks with great returns.
The P/B ratio is calculated as below:
P/B ratio = market capitalization/book value of equity.
The P/B ratio helps identify low-priced stocks with high growth prospects. StoneCo, General Motors Co., Enersys, Deutsche Bank and Keros Therapeutics are some such stocks.
Now, let us understand the concept of book value.
What is Book Value?
There are several ways in which book value can be defined. Book value is the total value that would be left over, according to the company’s balance sheet, if it went bankrupt immediately. In other words, this is what shareholders would theoretically receive if a company liquidates all its assets after paying off all its liabilities.
It is calculated by subtracting total liabilities from the total assets of a company. In most cases, this equates to common stockholders’ equity on the balance sheet. However, depending on the company’s balance sheet, intangible assets should also be subtracted from total assets to determine book value.
Understanding P/B Ratio
By comparing the book value of equity to its market price, we get an idea of whether a company is under- or overpriced. Like P/E or P/S ratios, it is always better to compare the P/B ratio within industries.
A P/B ratio of less than one means that the stock is trading at less than its book value or the stock is undervalued and, therefore, a good buy. Conversely, a stock with a ratio greater than one can be interpreted as being overvalued or relatively expensive.
For example, a stock with a P/B ratio of 2 means that we pay $2 for every $1 of book value. Thus, the higher the P/B, the more expensive the stock.
But there is a warning. A P/B ratio of less than one can also mean that the company is earning weak or even negative returns on its assets or that the assets are overstated. In such a case, the stock should be shunned because it may be destroying shareholder value. Conversely, the stock’s price may be significantly high — thereby pushing the P/B ratio to more than one — in the likely case that it has become a takeover target, a good enough reason to own the stock.
Moreover, the P/B ratio is not without limitations. It is useful for businesses like finance, investments, insurance and banking or manufacturing companies with many liquid/tangible assets on the books. However, it can be misleading for firms with significant R&D expenditure, high debt, service companies, or those with negative earnings.
In any case, the ratio is not particularly relevant as a standalone number. One should analyze other ratios like P/E, P/S and debt to equity before arriving at a reasonable investment decision.
