The core disconnect
This is the core disconnect that XRP bulls have struggled with for years. Ripple, a closely held company, has genuine enterprise traction, but its most widely adopted product -- what was called RippleNet -- functions primarily as a messaging layer and doesn't require banks to touch XRP, and most don't.
Ripple's liquidity feature -- what was called On-Demand Liquidity (ODL) -- is the primary way in which institutions make use of XRP. Except that Ripple's stablecoin, RLUSD, introduced at the end of 2024, can now be used in its place.
The bottom line
Ripple's business has never looked stronger. But that strength isn't flowing to XRP, and that's likely to continue. I wouldn't invest in XRP -- although I know plenty of people would disagree with me.

XRP Has Fallen More Than 60% -- and Ripple's Success Won't Save It

Shares of Deutsche Bank AG DB fell nearly 7% yesterday as the company disclosed that its private credit portfolio increased to €25.9 billion (nearly $30 billion) in 2025, underscoring growing investor concern about risks accumulating in the rapidly expanding sector. According to the bank’s 2025 annual report, Deutsche Bank’s private credit portfolio exposure reflects a 6% year-on-year expansion, positioning the German lender among the banks with some of the largest links to the booming private credit industry.
Deutsche Bank said its underwriting remains conservative and emphasized that it does not currently face “significant direct risks.” Still, the bank acknowledged that it could experience indirect credit risks through interconnected portfolios and counterparties in the wider private credit ecosystem.
Another area of growing exposure is the technology sector, particularly loans linked to software companies. The bank’s loan exposure to the technology sector, including software, reached €15.8 billion ($18.2 billion) at amortized cost in 2025, up from €11.7 billion ($13.5 billion) in the previous year.
Private credit has grown into a nearly $2 trillionglobal market attracting institutional investors seeking higher yields. However, concerns about private credit intensified due to concerns about weak underwriting standards, lack of transparency, and rising borrower leverage. Some private credit funds have faced redemption pressures, while certain lenders have reported loan markdowns and credit quality concerns.
This week, JPMorgan JPM decided to mark down some private-credit loans. JPM has reduced the value of certain loans held as collateral by private-credit groups, particularly software-related exposures, and is accordingly limiting how much it will lend against those assets. The move underscores how banks are becoming more cautious about the quality and liquidity of private loans as pressure rises on sectors seen as vulnerable to artificial-intelligence (AI) disruption and weaker economic conditions.
Strains are also emerging across the broader alternative-asset industry, including companies like BlackRock BLK and Blackstone BX. Recently, BlackRock limited withdrawals from a flagship private-credit fund after redemptions surged. On the other hand, Blackstone announced a rise in its redemption cap from 5% to 7% after facing a jump in investor requests. This highlights how quickly confidence can be tested when investors want cash back at the same time.
To conclude, the disclosure of Deutsche Bank’s sizable private-credit exposure shows that sentiment around the fast-growing asset class can shift at any time. Despite flagging the risks related to private credit, Deutsche Bank said it plans to expand its business within the sector, aiming to broaden distribution through selective regional growth and by developing new investment products and digital solutions alongside its private bank.

Deutsche Bank Breaks Below 200-Day Moving Average - Notable for DB

Robinhood is gaining market share across several brokerage services categories, and the company has introduced an AI investing assistant.
Circle issues USDC, the largest stablecoin that fully complies with regulations in the U.S. and Europe, and it recently introduced a payments network.
Robinhood Markets (NASDAQ: HOOD) and Circle Internet Group (NYSE: CRCL) have been hammered as investors have soured on cryptocurrency. Shares are down 50% and 75%, respectively, from record highs.
Hedge fund billionaire Israel Englander bought the dip in the fourth quarter. Neither stock is a large position in his portfolio, but the trades are noteworthy because certain Wall Street analysts think Robinhood and Circle are deeply undervalued.

Brian Bedell at Deutsche Bank and Gautam Chhugani at Bernstein have set Robinhood with a target price of $160 per share. That implies 113% upside from its current share price of $75.
John Todaro at Needham and Gautam Chhugani at Bernstein have set Circle with a target price of $190 per share. That implies 206% upside from its current share price of $62.
Here's what investors should know.
1. Robinhood Markets
Robinhood operates an online trading platform designed for younger investors. With nearly twice the number of millennial and Gen Z accounts as its closest competitor (Vanguard), the company is well positioned for growth as the population matures. Millennials and Gen Z are forecast to inherit over $100 trillion in assets from baby boomers in coming decades.
Robinhood is already gaining market share in most brokerage service categories, including cryptocurrency, equities, margin lending, and options. Also, the company has rapidly gained share in prediction markets, which rank as its fastest-growing product line by revenue. Until recently, Robinhood only partnered with prediction exchanges like Kalshi, but it has since doubled-down on the opportunity by acquiring its own exchange.
Robinhood is also trying to capitalize on the artificial intelligence (AI) boom with Cortex, an investing assistant that summarizesmarket news analyst ratings, and research reports. Cortex is exclusively available to users with a Gold membership, which costs $5 per month or $50 per year. "Our goal is for Robinhood to give you a world-class financial team in your pocket, with cutting-edge tools you can't find anywhere else," said CEO Vlad Tenev.
Robinhood stock is down 50% from its high, partially because cryptocurrency transaction volume dropped in the fourth quarter as investors have become overwhelmingly bearish. But Wall Street expects adjusted earnings to increase at 20% annually through 2027, and that makes the current valuation of 36 times earnings look reasonable.
I doubt Robinhood will deliver triple-digit returns during the next year, unless investor sentiment surrounding cryptocurrency improves substantially, but the current valuation is still an attractive entry point for long-term investors. Among 28 analysts, the stock has a median target price of $129 per share, which implies 72% upside from the current share price of $75.
2. Circle Internet Group
Circle is a fintech company that mints stablecoins and provides developer tools that let businesses integrate blockchain payments into applications. The company is best known for USDC, a stablecoin that tracks the U.S. dollar. While it is the second-largest stablecoin by market value, it is the largest stablecoin that fully complies with regulations in the U.S. and Europe.
Circle primarily earns revenue from interest on reserve assets (i.e., the fiat currency held in reserve to back its stablecoins). But the company has expanded into payments with the Circle Payments Network (CPN), which is designed to be faster and cheaper than traditional cross-border payment systems. Multinational companies may find the CPN particularly valuable for payroll, supplier payments, and treasury management.
Presently, the stablecoin market is worth about $315 billion. But several experts estimate that figure will soar to $2 trillion by 2030, which implies annual grow of 45%. Some experts are even more optimistic. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent thinks the stablecoin market could hit $3 trillion by 2030, implying annual growth of 57%.
In November, Circle estimated USDC in circulation would increase at 40% annually over the next several years, which suggests reserve income (i.e., revenue from interest) could grow faster than 30% annually during that period. But total revenue could increase more quickly if the CPN gains traction as a cross-border payment system.
Wall Street estimates revenue will increase at 33% annually through 2027, which makes the current valuation of 5.8 times sales look quite reasonable. I doubt the stock will deliver triple-digit returns in the next year unless market sentiment on cryptocurrency improves. But the stock appears undervalued. Among 27 analysts, Circle has a median target price of $107 per share, implying 73% upside from the current share price of $62.

It continues to receive ample orders for its wide range of combat-proven defense products from the Pentagon and its foreign allies.
Steadily improving global commercial air traffic boosts the company's sales. Strong volumes and a favorable mix across large commercial engines and Pratt Canada operations are expected to support the company’s growth momentum in the commercial aerospace market. This resulted in RTX registering a backlog of $268 billion as of Dec. 31, 2025.
Yet, the uncertainties created by the recent imposition of U.S. government-issued import tariffs pose a risk for RTX. Supply-chain challenges continue to affect the aerospace sector, which may adversely impact RTX.

Shares of IBM have gained +10.8% over the past six months against the Zacks Computer - Integrated Systems industry’s gain of +61.4%. The company reported strong fourth-quarter 2025 results, with adjusted earnings and revenues beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate. Strength in hybrid cloud, AI-powered automation, and enterprise consulting is driving growth in the Software and Consulting segment.
IBM is gaining traction on the Watsonx platform, which is likely to be its core technology platform for AI capabilities. The company’s focus on quantum technology for solutions to complex problems beyond the reach of classical computing is a tailwind. EVI’s shares have outperformed the Zacks Industrial Services industry over the past year (+24.4% vs. +4.9%). This microcap company with a market capitalization of $269.33 million delivered solid top-line momentum, with revenues rising 24% in the December quarter and 20% for the first six months of FY26, alongside gross margin expansion to ~31%. Improved mix, pricing discipline and operating leverage are enhancing earnings quality.

DB Capturing Growing Wealth in Gulf & North Asia
The hiring push reflects Deutsche Bank’s effort to capitalize on expanding wealth pools across the Gulf and North Asia, where ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) clients are increasingly seeking geographic and asset-class diversification. This trend reflects growing demand for cross-border wealth management amid geopolitical uncertainty and market volatility.
The expansion also aligns with broader industry trends, with global financial firms like The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. GS and Barclays PLC BCS pursuing similar strategies in emerging markets. According to Boston Consulting Group’s Global Wealth Report 2025, the global financial wealth reached a record $305 trillion in 2024, reinforcing the long-term structural opportunity in wealth management.
In line with this trend, GS launched an onshore private wealth management presence in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, targeting ultra-wealthy clients in October 2025. Earlier, in November 2024, BCS announced plans to establish a new private banking booking center in Singapore by 2026, aimed at expanding its Asia footprint and serving ultra-high-net-worth and global family office clients.
DB Plans to Scale Lombard Lending Capabilities
Alongside relationship manager hiring, Deutsche Bank is sharpening its focus on Lombard lending, a product that allows private banking clients to borrow against their investment portfolios.
The clients are moderately increasing leverage, reflecting growing interest in Lombard lending. Management views Lombard lending as an area of rising demand and intends to further scale capabilities in this segment.
The expansion of Deutsche Bank’s emerging markets franchise complements its Global Hausbank strategy, which prioritizes capital-light, fee-generating businesses such as wealth management. As of Dec. 31, 2025, these businesses contributed nearly 67.5% of total revenues. The bank further targets a net revenue compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of above 5% through 2028, driven by these fee-based, capital-light operations.
By strengthening coverage in high-growth wealth markets and expanding lending solutions for affluent clients, Deutsche Bank is positioning its Private Bank business to contribute more meaningfully to its medium-term revenue growth and return targets through 2028.
Building on this strategic expansion, the bank reaffirmed its target post-tax return on tangible equity above 13% by 2028 and expects the cost/income ratio to decline below 60%. The CET1 capital ratio is also projected to remain within the 13.5%–14% range, supporting sustainable shareholder distributions, including a 60% payout ratio. While incremental investments and higher compensation costs may weigh on near-term earnings, the bank’s diversified deposit base and structural reforms are expected to support steady medium-term growth.

The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC), the most popular benchmark for the U.S. stock market, posted double-digit returns in 2023, 2024, and 2025. And the index is off to a relatively strong start in 2026, adding a little more than 1% year to date amid continued enthusiasm about artificial intelligence.
However, President Trump's tariffs have created a great deal of uncertainty, and businesses have responded by hiring fewer workers. The economy added just 181,000 jobs in 2025, a sharp decline from 1.2 million in 2024. In fact, jobs growth has not been so weak since the pandemic in 2020.

So what? Slow jobs growth hints at an economic slowdown, which is particularly concerning because the S&P 500 trades at a very expensive valuation. Nevertheless, most Wall Street analysts anticipate double-digit gains in the remaining months of 2026. Here's what investors should know.
The Wall Street consensus says the S&P 500 will climb about 10% in the remaining months of 2026
Collectively, S&P 500 companies reported an acceleration in revenue and earnings growth in 2025, and Wall Street anticipates another acceleration in 2026, driven by solid economic growth (supported by tax cuts and artificial intelligence spending) and one or two interest rate cuts from the Federal Reserve.
In turn, most analysts expect double-digit gains in the S&P 500 in the remaining months of the year. The chart below provides a consolidated view of where various Wall Street research organizations and investment banks think the benchmark index will finish the year. It also shows the implied upside from the current level of 6,940.

The 20 Wall Street research organizations and investment banks listed above expect the S&P 500 to move higher in the remaining months of 2026, with projected returns ranging from roughly 2% to 17%. But the median forecast says the index will advance about 10%.
However, Wall Street has historically done a poor job forecasting where the S&P 500 will close in a given year, not because analysts are incompetent, but rather because predicting the future is impossible. In the last four years, the median year-end estimate for the S&P 500 was incorrect by an average of 16 percentage points.
Why Wall Street might be wrong about the S&P 500 in 2026
The S&P 500 currently trades at 22 times forward earnings, a valuation it has more or less maintained for the last 18 months. That is a meaningful premium to the 10-year average of 18.8 times forward earnings.
Previously, the S&P 500 has only sustained such an expensive valuation during two periods in history: the dot-com bubble in the late 1990s/early 2000s and the Covid-19 pandemic in the early 2020s. In both cases, the index ultimately dropped into a bear market.
The odds of a bear market in 2026 are arguably elevated because President Trump's tariffs are a source of economic uncertainty even in the best case scenario. Businesses have already cut back on hiring, and policy uncertainty will likely intensify as midterm elections approach. And uncertainty makes investors nervous.
Since 1950, the S&P 500 has return an average of just 4.6% in midterm election years, according to Carson Investment Research. More concerning, the S&P 500 has suffered an average intra-year drawdown of 17% during midterm election years. In other words, history says the index is likely to fall 17% at some point in 2026.
Importantly, investors should not interpret anything I've said as a reason to exit the stock market today. Past performance is never a guarantee of future results. But the current market environment warrants caution. Limit stock purchases to your highest-conviction ideas, and never buy stocks you aren't willing to hold through a steep drawdown.

Deutsche Bank raises price target for Micron stock
Deutsche Bank published new coverage on Micron yesterday and reiterated a buy rating on the stock. The firm's analysts also raised their one-year price target on the stock from $300 per share to $500 per share, citing a favorable outlook for margins driven by high demand for artificial intelligence (AI) memory chips. As of this writing, Deutsche Bank's new price target implies additional upside of roughly 22%.
Demand for memory chips looks poised to remain high
In addition to Deutsche Bank's new price target, Micron stock is likely also getting a lift from comments made by the chief technology officer of Samsung Electronics' chip unit. Speaking at the Semicon trade show today, Song Jai-hyuk said that he expected that high demand for memory chips would likely continue through 2026 and extend into next year. While Micron and Samsung are competitors, sky-high demand for memory chips used in AI processors and data center applications is benefiting both companies and is on track to continue lifting sales and earnings.

Why Micron Stock Is Skyrocketing Today

UBS Group AG UBS reported a fourth-quarter 2025 net profit attributable to shareholders of $1.19 billion compared with $770 million in the prior-year quarter.
Results were driven by the strong performances of the Global Wealth Management, Asset Management and Investment Bank divisions. However, the decline in total assets was concerning.
For 2025, the company reported a net profit attributable to shareholders of $7.77 billion compared with $5.08 billion in the prior-year quarter.
UBS' Revenues & Expenses
The company’s fourth-quarter total revenues increased 4.4% year over year to $12.14 billion.
For 2025, the company’s revenues rose 1.9% year over year to $49.6 billion.
Operating expenses fell nearly 1% year over year to $10.29 billion.
UBS Group reported total credit loss expenses of $159 million, which declined 30.6% from the year-ago quarter.
UBS Group Business Divisions’ Performances
Global Wealth Management’s operating profit before tax was $1.29 billion, up from $867 million in the year-ago quarter.
Asset Management’s operating profit before tax was $212 million, up 65.6% from the year-ago quarter.
Personal & Corporate Banking reported operating profit before tax of $565 million, down 5% year over year.
The Investment Bank unit reported an operating profit before tax of $640 million, up from $479 million in the year-ago quarter.
Non-Core & Legacy incurred an operating loss before tax of $455 million in the reported quarter compared with a loss of $923 million in the year-ago quarter.
Group Items reported an operating loss before tax of $552 million compared with a loss of $100 million in the year-ago quarter.
UBS's Capital Position
Total assets fell nearly 1% from the previous quarter’s end to $1.62 trillion.
UBS’s return on Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) capital was 6.6% as of Dec. 31, 2025, compared with 4.2% as of Dec. 31, 2024.
The risk-weighted assets declined 1% year over year to $493.4 billion.
The CET1 capital declined marginally year over year to $71.3 billion. As of Dec. 31, 2025, UBS's invested assets were $7 trillion, up 15.1% year over year.
UBS Group’s Capital Distribution Update
For 2025, the board of directors plans to propose a dividend of $1.10 per share to UBS shareholders. Subject to approval at the Annual General Meeting, scheduled for April 15, 2026, the dividend will be paid out on April 23 to shareholders of record as of April 22.
The company remains committed to progressive dividends and plans to accrue for a mid-teens percentage increase in the ordinary dividend per share for 2026.
In the fourth quarter of 2025, UBS completed its planned $3 billion worth of share repurchases. The company intends to repurchase $3 billion of shares in 2026, with an aim to do more, subject to clarity around the future regulatory regime in Switzerland.
UBS Progresses With Credit Suisse Integration Plan
The company is on track to substantially complete the integration of Credit Suisse by the end of 2026.
In the fourth quarter of 2025, UBS continued to advance its Swiss business migrations, with 85% of Swiss-booked client accounts migrated by the end of the quarter, while the migration of Personal & Corporate client accounts was substantially complete. The company remains on track to complete the Swiss booking center migrations by the end of the first quarter of 2026.
By the end of the fourth quarter of 2025, UBS had decommissioned around 73% of applications in the Non-core and Legacy division. Meanwhile, the transfer of Credit Suisse International’s residual business and related products to UBS AG London Branch and UBS Europe SE was largely completed.
In the fourth quarter of 2025, the company delivered an additional $0.7 billion in gross cost savings. Cumulative gross cost savings totaled $10.7 billion at the end of 2025 compared with the combined 2022 cost base of UBS and Credit Suisse. The company has identified additional synergies, allowing it to raise its ambition for annualized exit rate gross cost savings by the end of 2026 from around $13 billion to approximately $13.5 billion. Management expects cumulative integration-related expenses to be around $15 billion by the end of 2026, assuming constant foreign-exchange rates.
As of Dec. 31, 2025, the non-core and legacy business division has delivered a 67% reduction in risk-weighted assets (RWA) since the second quarter of 2023. UBS has achieved its ambition to reduce credit and market risk RWA to around $5 billion, and continues to target a further reduction to approximately $4 billion by the end of 2026.

Performances of Other Foreign Banks
ICICI Bank Ltd.’s IBN profit after tax for the third-quarter fiscal 2026 (ended Dec. 31) was INR113.2 billion ($1.3 billion), down 4% from the prior-year quarter.
Results were hurt by a significant rise in provisions, higher operating expenses and treasury loss. However, rising net interest income and non-interest income, along with solid loan growth, were tailwinds for IBN.
Deutsche Bank DB reported fourth-quarter 2025 earnings attributable to its shareholders of €1.29 billion ($1.55 billion), which rose significantly from €106 million ($126.8 million) reported in the prior-year quarter.
DB’s increased revenues and lower provisions for credit losses aided results. Notably, the decline in expenses was also encouraging.

UBS Group Q4 Earnings & Revenues Increase Y/Y, Expenses Decline

The SPDR Gold Shares ETF (NYSEMKT: GLD) has increased 25% year to date, putting it ahead of Palantir Technologies (down 12%) and Nvidia (up 3%). More impressive, the gold fund outperformed both artificial intelligence stocks by at least 50 percentage points over the last six months.
Meanwhile, the SPDR Gold Shares ETF has also outperformed the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) by 23 percentage points year to date and 52 percentage points over the last six months. Two hedge fund billionaires (both with excellent track records) positioned their portfolios to benefit in the third quarter.

Israel Englander of Millennium Management added 104,900 shares of the SPDR Gold Shares ETF. The gold fund represented less than 1% of his portfolio as of September 2025.
Ken Griffin of Citadel Advisors added 255,100 shares of the SPDR Gold Shares ETF. He also bought call options on the gold fund, and they were his fourth-largest holding as of September 2025.
Millennium and Citadel outperformed the S&P 500 over the last three years, and they rank among the five most successful hedge funds in history as measured by net gains, according to LCH Investments. That makes Englander and Griffin good sources of inspiration.

The SPDR Gold Shares ETF tracks the price of gold
The SPDR Gold Shares ETF is an exchange-traded fund run by State Street. It tracks gold prices by dividing physical bullion held in vaults into shares. Investors benefit because the fund is more liquid and more convenient than gold bars.
Additionally, gold is an attractive portfolio diversifier because its price movements have historically shown little (if any) correlation with stocks and bonds. That makes gold look especially appealing during periods of global tension, macroeconomic distress, or other situations that could cause stocks and bonds to drop.
According to State Street, "Gold has demonstrated a low and negative correlation to many financial asset indexes over time and has a track record of providing a hedge during periods of large market drawdowns, systemic risk, and geopolitical volatility."
For instance, during the financial crisis of 2008, gold prices declined 29%, while the S&P 500 dropped 57%. During the brief recession in 2020, gold prices declined 13%, while the S&P 500 dropped 34%. And when inflation hit a four-decade high in 2022, gold prices declined 21%, while the S&P 500 dropped 25%.
President Trump's policies have caused geopolitican tension and economic uncertainty
Gold prices, just like the value of any commodity, depend on supply and demand. Supply increases slowly, with above-ground gold stock growing at roughly 2% annually for the last few decades. That means demand is the most consequential variable.
Gold is considered a safe haven asset because it generally retains its value (or even increase in value) during periods of geopolitical tension and economic distress. Consequently, demand for gold tends to increase when investors are worried about war, inflation, recession, or the devaluation of fiat currency like the U.S. dollar.
President Trump has stoked those fears with tax, trade, fiscal, and foreign policy decisions. During his second term, the U.S. Dollar Index has declined 11% (falling to a four-year low) due to sweeping tariffs, tax cuts, rising government debt, attempts to compromise the Federal Reserve's independence, and threats to take Greenland by any means necessary.
Many Wall Street analysts believe the geopolitical and economic tumult created by the Trump administration will push gold prices even higher in the remaining months of 2026, but others think the precious metal is likely to lose value.

Of course, investors shouldn't necessarily listen to Wall Street. Gold has nearly doubled in value in the past year and few (if any) analysts expected such strong price appreciation. To that end, I think investors -- especially those who think President Trump's policies will be a continued source of global anxiety -- should consider adding exposure.
