A large energy asset in New England is about to change hands, if an agreed-upon new deal ends up closing. Global energy giant Shell (NYSE:SHEL) has signed a deal for one of its subsidiaries to sell the business that owns the Rhode Island State Energy Center (RISEC). The buyer is the sprawling U.S. utility company Constellation Energy (NASDAQ:CEG), and the price is $715 million.
RISEC is the No. 1 electricity-generating facility in its state by output; that, plus the transaction's price tag, makes this deal meaningful. Here's how it'll impact both companies.

Good reasons to own RISEC
That $715 million will be paid entirely in cash by Constellation and is subject to customary purchase price adjustments. Constellation wrote in its press release about the arrangement that the effective net cash outlay is $580 million, due to $135 million in expected first-year tax benefits.
The sale is subject to approval by the relevant regulatory authorities. Both companies said they expect it to close in the first quarter of 2027.
RISEC is a facility powered by natural gas that makes the "juice" with two combustion turbines and a single steam turbine. Its capacity is 609 megawatts of electricity. As a relatively recent construction -- it came onstream in 2002 -- it is efficient, with its combined-cycle operation capturing and reusing heat from the gas turbines to produce additional power. Such a system is notably more efficient than a traditional single-cycle natural gas plant, and its emissions are lower, according to Constellation.
In its press release on the deal, Constellation quoted its CEO, Joe Dominguez, as saying that as the company's business in the New England region expands, "we need a reliable asset that is well-positioned on both the electric grid and the natural gas pipeline system. RISEC checks all of these boxes."
The company expects RISEC to be immediately accretive to its operating profit. It made a point to add that purchasing it won't affect management's goal of executing $5 billion in share repurchases by the end of 2027.
A peak performer
In its own press release on the RISEC sale, Shell simultaneously announced a buy. The subsidiary that (for now) owns RISEC, Shell Energy North America (SENA), has acquired Hunlock Creek Generation, which owns two natural-gas-fired power plants in Pennsylvania. Combined, the pair's generation capacity is 169 megawatts. Shell did not disclose the purchase price.
The company wrote that this deal "secures supply and capacity offtake for SENA in the Mid-Atlantic power grid operated by PJM Interconnection." PJM is the most significant wholesale electricity market and grid operator in the U.S.
One of the two Hunlock assets is a 44-megawatt peaking plant, i.e., a power generation facility that can generate significant electricity on short notice, making it ideal for periods of high demand. What's particularly attractive about such assets is that they operate on the 'capacity market," i.e. they draw revenue simply by a commitment to be available during such peak times. On top of that, they get paid for the electricity they produce in these periods of need.
Like Constellation with RISEC, Shell is expecting Hunlock to be a very productive asset. It wrote that it anticipates this business will exceed the company's benchmark internal rate of return (IRR) for power investments. The company didn't provide detailed guidance on how its latest acquisition might affect the fundamentals.
Powering the future
Both Constellation and Shell are adjusting their U.S. electricity generation portfolios at a time when power demand should rise, in no small part due to the feverish build-out of artificial intelligence (AI) compute capacity in this country. For Constellation, RISEC is a modern and highly productive facility that appears to be essentially plug-and-play -- hence the stated expectation of immediate accretion to its future parent's business. Meanwhile, Shell's take-up of Hunlock feels like an opportunistic buy of an asset that benefits from that two-stream revenue model.
So if I were a shareholder of either company, I'd welcome the news of this little web of deals. After it was announced, Constellation's share price dipped slightly while Shell's moved marginally higher. That's likely because the two companies are large enough that neither buy will make or break their new owners. They're still positive and might even impact their respective fundamentals more than expected, though, so I'd be bullish in both cases.

Shell Just Sold a $715 Million Stake in a Major New England Asset to Constellation Energy. Here's What Investors Need to Know.

Constellation Energy Corporation CEG is strengthening its generation portfolio to capitalize on rising electricity demand while focusing on reliable power and attractive returns. Its broad asset base can support customer needs and enhance grid reliability.
On Sept. 10, 2026, CEG agreed to acquire the Rhode Island State Energy Center (RISEC) from Shell for $715 million, subject to regulatory approvals and other closing conditions. The 609-megawatt (MW) combined-cycle natural-gas facility will join CEG’s merchant generation portfolio and provide flexible, dispatchable power in the ISO New England market. CEG expects the deal to boost operating earnings and preserve its ability to complete the $5 billion share-repurchase program through 2027.
CEG operates about 55 gigawatts (GW) of generation capacity across nuclear, natural gas and geothermal assets, providing substantial scale to support economic growth and strengthen grid reliability.
Owning additional generation can give the company more flexibility to serve customers and participate in the regional wholesale electricity market. The company targets base EPS growth of more than 20% through 2029, alongside a long-term goal of more than 10% growth over rolling three-year periods.
Thus, CEG’s diverse generation portfolio, flexible assets and long-term clean-energy contracts can support reliability, capture market opportunities and sustain earnings and cash-flow growth.
Expanding Generation Portfolios Support Power Producer Growth
Power producers are expanding generation portfolios to meet rising electricity demand, strengthen reliability and support long-term customer growth. New capacity investments can broaden earnings opportunities while improving system flexibility and resilience.
NRG Energy NRG completed its acquisition of LS Power, adding roughly 13 GW across 18 natural-gas plants. The transaction doubles generation capacity, broadens geographic reach and strengthens reliability amid rising power demand.
Talen Energy TLN expanded its fleet through the Cornerstone acquisition, adding nearly 2.6 GW of baseload and peaking generation. The assets diversify cash flows and strengthen its western PJM presence.

America's best stocks from 11 economic sectors
The S&P 500 is the most widely followed U.S. stock market index for a couple of reasons. First, it's made up of 500 companies from 11 different sectors of the economy, so it's highly diversified. Second, it has very strict entry criteria: its members must maintain a market capitalization of at least $22.7 billion and be profitable. But even after those boxes are ticked, a special committee ultimately decides which companies make the cut.
The S&P is weighted by market capitalization, so the largest companies in the index have a much higher representation than the smallest. Therefore, despite its diversified composition, the information technology sector has a massive weighting of 36.6% because it's home to five companies worth $1 trillion or more (Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Broadcom, and Micron Technology).

The technology sector is exerting a particularly strong influence on the performance of the S&P 500 right now, thanks to the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution, which began to gain momentum when OpenAI's ChatGPT application surpassed 100 million users in early 2023. In fact, if we exclude the sector's contribution over the last three-and-a-half years, the S&P 500's return drops from 101% to just 63%.
Simply put, the Vanguard ETF gives investors exposure to the fastest-growing area of the market in a diversified manner, which is why it's a popular long-term investment option.
Taking Buffett's advice could yield spectacular results
The S&P 500 has returned 10.7% since its inception in 1957 (assuming all dividends were reinvested). But it has delivered an accelerated return of 13.9% since Buffett recommended the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF in 2014, primarily thanks to the tech sector.
Past performance isn't always a reliable indicator of future results, but a 25-year-old investor could build a very nice retirement fund using the Vanguard ETF if its historical returns persist. Below are two potential outcomes.

Those results don't include costs, but with an expense ratio of just 0.03%, investors would incur an annual fee of just $3 for every $10,000 they have parked in the Vanguard ETF.
To conclude, investors probably shouldn't sell their entire position at retirement age, because compounding yields the greatest benefits over time. With a large enough balance after 40 years, the subsequent annual returns could provide a significant income to fund life after employment.

If I Were in My 20s, I'd Buy This Vanguard ETF Warren Buffett Recommended and Hold It Forever

In June of last year, Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) agreed to buy the clean energy attributes of Constellation Energy's (NASDAQ:CEG) Clinton Clean Energy Center in Illinois for 20 years. The agreement covers 1,121 megawatts of nuclear generation -- more output than Constellation has committed to any other artificial intelligence (AI) buyer. The next-biggest is the roughly 835-megawatt agreement that is restarting a Three Mile Island unit for Microsoft.
But the Meta contract doesn't commence until June 2027, nine months from now. And it means the results Constellation is reporting today, including the guidance it raised with last month's second-quarter report, don't include a dollar from the company's biggest AI agreement.

For investors who own the stock as a way to play AI's power demand, I think the calendar is worth getting straight. Shares go for about $299 as of this writing. Their high over the past year was $412.70. The growth the market is paying for arrives on a schedule.

What exactly did Meta buy?
The social media company is purchasing Clinton's clean energy attributes for two decades as part of its commitment to match 100% of its electricity use with clean and renewable energy. The plant's power itself keeps flowing onto the local grid.
The agreement also supported relicensing the facility, and regulators granted the renewal in December 2025, clearing Clinton to run through 2047. And plant upgrades will add 30 megawatts of output along the way.
The June 2027 start date isn't arbitrary. Clinton is supported today by Illinois's ratepayer-funded zero-emission credit program, and the Meta agreement begins when that program expires.
In other words, the plant is being paid right now. The deal changes who pays for Clinton's clean energy attributes, not whether anyone does.
More start dates ahead
The Meta contract is one item in a queue. Constellation's 20-year agreement with Microsoft begins when the Crane Clean Energy Center, the former Three Mile Island unit, comes back online.
Regulators have approved transferring interconnection rights to the site from two Pennsylvania fossil-fuel units Constellation had planned to retire, along with a fuel license amendment -- progress the company said moves the plant closer to restarting in 2027.
Constellation's second-quarter update also disclosed 920 megawatts of new long-term contracts to sell nuclear power, signed with investment-grade customers on 15-to-20-year terms with start dates from 2029 through 2032. Among them is a 176-megawatt deal with Walmart that will support a 30-megawatt capacity expansion at Constellation's Dresden plant in Illinois.
So the contracted demand arrives in stages -- Meta in June 2027, the Crane restart the same year, and the newest agreements from 2029 on. Not one of them adds anything to this year's results.
This year's growth doesn't need Meta
The queue matters because Constellation's earnings are climbing without it.
Constellation's non-GAAP (adjusted) operating earnings rose to $2.55 per share in the second quarter of 2026, about 34% higher than the $1.91 it earned a year earlier. The company credited the addition of Calpine, the natural gas and geothermal generator it acquired in January, along with favorable market and portfolio conditions, partially offset by nuclear outages. Constellation also lifted its guidance for the full year and now expects adjusted operating earnings of $11.50 to $12.50 per share in 2026. Showing how much growth is arriving before any AI contract kicks in, the midpoint of that range sits about 28% above the $9.39 per share the company earned last year.
In short, the earnings the stock is priced against are moving higher on their own, with the contracted nuclear deals stacked on top starting in the middle of next year.
Shares trade at about 25 times earnings, measured against the midpoint of Constellation's 2026 guidance. It's a premium price for a power producer, but I'd argue it's attached to unusually visible growth: the customers are signed and the start dates are on paper.
Of course, contracted isn't the same as guaranteed. The plants have to run, the Crane restart could slip, and a 20-year agreement can't pull its start date forward.
But growth backed by signed contracts is arguably easier to count on than growth that depends on demand that may never show up. Constellation's biggest AI deal starts paying next June. Until then, the earnings carrying the stock don't need it.

Constellation Energy's Biggest AI Power Deal Doesn't Start Paying Until June 2027

Although Vistra's (NYSE: VST) nuclear portfolio is smaller, with 6,448 megawatts of capacity, its contracted opportunity is substantial. Both companies have been signing long-term deals with technology companies that need reliable electricity for data centers.

But the better stock is not simply the company with more nuclear capacity. Constellation Energy and Vistra trade at roughly 22.4 times and 14.4 times forward one-year earnings, respectively. The significant valuation gap is an important factor in deciding which stock offers the better opportunity today.
Constellation has significant revenue visibility
Constellation Energy has signed a 20-year agreement to supply Microsoft with power from the planned restart of the 835-megawatt Crane Clean Energy Center. The company has also signed a 20-year agreement to supply Meta Platforms with 1,121 megawatts of nuclear power from the Clinton Clean Energy Center. Constellation Energy also signed another 920 megawatts of long-term power purchase agreements for nuclear generation in the second quarter. (ending June 30, 2026).
Management expects base earnings per share to compound at 20% or more annually from 2026 through 2029. However, base earnings represent only about 60% to 70% of total adjusted operating earnings. So investors should not assume total adjusted operating earnings per share (EPS) will grow at the same rate.
Vistra also looks attractive
Vistra's 20-year agreements with Meta Platforms cover 2,609 megawatts, including 433 megawatts of new capacity expected from upgrades at existing plants. Amazon's AWS has also signed a 20-year agreement for up to 1,200 megawatts of power from Vistra's Comanche Peak nuclear plant.
Vistra sees a 2027 adjusted EBITDA opportunity of $7.4 billion to $7.8 billion from its ongoing operations, excluding potential benefits from the pending Cogentrix Energy acquisition and its agreements with Meta Platforms. The company has also reduced its share count by roughly 30% since November 2021, which has helped boost earnings per share even without relying entirely on faster business growth.
Hence, while Constellation Energy deserves a premium, Vistra offers the stronger risk-reward proposition today.

But the demand that sent nuclear stocks soaring in the first place hasn't reversed. Constellation Energy (NASDAQ:CEG), for instance, reported an additional 920 megawatts of long-term power purchase agreements alongside its second-quarter results.

In other words, the crash and the demand can both be true at once, because these companies do very different jobs. NuScale designs reactors, Cameco (NYSE:CCJ) sells the fuel, and Constellation already sells the power. A $2,000 investment split across the three buys three different claims on the same electricity demand.

1. NuScale: approved designs, almost no revenue
NuScale's reactor is the first and only small modular reactor design certified by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Then in May 2025, the agency approved the company's uprated US460 plant design -- six modules of 77 megawatts each, or 462 megawatts in total.
What the approvals haven't produced yet is a paying customer base. Revenue went from $8.1 million in last year's second quarter to $565,000 in this year's first quarter to $75,000 in the second. The engineering work behind the older figures, on a project in Romania, wrapped up in late 2025, and nothing has replaced it. Meanwhile, the company's net loss widened to $50.1 million in the quarter, versus $37.6 million in the same period of 2025.
Buying the growth stock today is mostly a bet that the approvals turn into orders. The company does have a $1.9 billion war chest of cash and investments, which buys it time. And its partner ENTRA1 Energy is in discussions with the Tennessee Valley Authority about what management calls potentially the largest nuclear power deployment program in U.S. history -- though a definitive agreement hasn't been signed.
2. Cameco: the pounds are already sold
Cameco mines and refines uranium, and much of what it will deliver for years to come is already sold. The company has contracts in place for average annual deliveries of more than 28 million pounds of uranium over the next five years. Commitments run above that average from 2026 through 2028, and below it in 2029 and 2030. Notably, Cameco expects its own share of this year's production to total 19.5 million to 21.5 million pounds.
The company also said the long-term uranium price strengthened further, supported by contracting activity in the year's first half as customers increasingly focus on security of supply.
The second quarter itself was quieter. Cameco delivered 7.1 million pounds of uranium, and earnings fell from a year earlier, mostly because earnings from its stake in nuclear services company Westinghouse dropped after an unusually strong year-ago quarter.
Cameco's stock isn't the beaten-down one here. Shares trade about 25% off their 52-week high as of this writing, a far smaller discount than NuScale's. An investor buying today is paying for deliveries already under contract, not for a turnaround.
3. Constellation: the only one selling power today
Constellation is the largest nuclear energy company in the U.S. Its overall fleet has 55 gigawatts of generating capacity, a figure that includes Calpine, the natural gas and geothermal power producer it bought in January. Its nuclear fleet produced 44,160 gigawatt-hours of electricity in the second quarter.
Profits are rising, too. Second-quarter non-GAAP (adjusted) operating earnings climbed 34% year over year to $2.55 per share, and management now expects $11.50 to $12.50 in full-year adjusted earnings per share, a raised outlook. The new power purchase agreements run 15 to 20 years, and they include a 176-megawatt deal with Walmart supporting a capacity expansion at its Dresden plant in Illinois.
The stock isn't cheap, however. At about $292 per share, and using the midpoint of management's raised guidance, the stock's price-to-earnings multiple sits near 24.
But unlike NuScale, Constellation's valuation is measured against profits that already exist.
How I'd split the $2,000
Ultimately, all three stocks are claims on the same electricity demand. They just sit at different distances from the cash.
Constellation collects it today. Cameco has years of deliveries under contract. NuScale is still waiting for its first real order.
Sure, NuScale likely offers the most upside if orders finally land. But it's also the only one that could still be years away from meaningful revenue, and its losses are widening in the meantime.
So if I were putting $2,000 into nuclear power today, I think the split should favor proof: about half in Constellation, most of the rest in Cameco, and the smallest slice in NuScale. That way, most of the money sits with companies already getting paid.

3 Nuclear Stocks to Buy With $2,000 After One Fell 83%

Between 2005 and 2025, electricity demand in the United States increased by 10%. Not 10% a year, 10% in total. But between 2025 and 2045, there's going to be a step change in demand, with electricity demand projected to increase by 60%. That's a very good backdrop for nuclear power, which provides reliable, baseload power that is "clean" because it doesn't produce greenhouse gases.
There's a nuclear renaissance on the way. However, it looks like the United States isn't quite ready to participate yet. Here's what you need to know and how you can play the growth of nuclear outside of the U.S. market.

Where are new reactors getting built?
The problem for investors seeking to participate in a U.S. nuclear power renaissance is that it really isn't taking place just yet. Sure, some companies with existing nuclear power assets are benefiting from surging electricity demand. For example, utility Constellation Energy (NASDAQ: CEG) has inked deals with artificial intelligence data center owners and other companies that will keep nuclear reactors operating longer than planned, or allow for increased output from existing reactors. And Southern Company (NYSE: SO) recently completed construction of two new reactors, positioning it to provide decades of nuclear power to the market.
However, the real nuclear power story right now is taking shape outside of the U.S. market. Of the 77 nuclear reactors under construction worldwide, only three are being built in the broader "Americas", according to nuclear fuel supplier Cameco (NYSE: CCJ). Asia is the real hub for the industry, with a total of 57 reactors being built (37 in China, eight in India, and 12 throughout the rest of the region).
Nuclear industry service providers could be the best approach
It will be difficult for most U.S. investors to invest in the Asian nuclear power boom. However, that doesn't mean it is impossible; you just need to be a little creative. For example, Cameco is one of the most important suppliers of nuclear fuel worldwide. It also owns 50% of Westinghouse, a service provider to the nuclear power industry. Cameco should benefit from nuclear power growth, wherever it occurs. And that includes the opportunity to benefit from U.S. nuclear growth if, perhaps when, it occurs.
A less direct option is Brookfield Renewable (NYSE: BEP)(NYSE: BEPC). This company owns a globally diversified portfolio of clean energy assets, including hydroelectric, solar, wind, and storage. But it also owns a piece of Westinghouse. So it, too, should benefit, though less directly, from a global nuclear power renaissance. What's notable about Brookfield Renewable is that the partnership share class offers an attractive yield of 5%, with the corporate share class coming in at 4.9%. That will likely interest dividend investors far more than Cameco's miserly 0.2%.
New reactor technology is exciting, but still not being used
That said, the future of nuclear power could be small modular reactors (SMRs) like those being developed by Oklo (NYSE: OKLO) and NuScale Power (NYSE: SMR). There is a huge long-term opportunity if SMR technology gains traction, particularly in the U.S. market, where AI data centers could benefit from the availability of the nuclear technology. Only that hasn't happened yet. Oklo, for example, recently received bad news when it was dropped from a PJM Interconnection study. That could delay Oklo's development plans by 14 months or more, according to the company.
NuScale Power, meanwhile, has at least two potential customers lined up for its SMR technology. But neither one is at a point where a confirmed sale is on the table. So NuScale Power is still just a high-risk start-up that only the most aggressive growth investors should consider buying. And even after a deal is inked, it still needs to prove it can reliably manufacture its reactors.
Nuclear is happening, but you need to tread carefully
Nuclear power is definitely on the upswing globally. However, that really hasn't led to a massive increase in opportunity in the United States. So you need to be careful how you invest. Large stock price swings in Constellation Energy, NuScale Power, and Oklo are evidence that investor emotions can get ahead of actual long-term opportunities on Wall Street. That said, industry suppliers such as Cameco and Brookfield Renewable might offer investors a good entry point, given their ability to serve the global nuclear industry right now and in the future.

As electricity demand surges amid AI data center growth, two utility companies stand out. NextEra Energy (NYSE: NEE) and Constellation Energy (NASDAQ: CEG) are both incredibly strong businesses, but are taking different approaches to this new chapter in North American power.
NextEra is both a traditional utility provider and a powerhouse in renewable energy. It is planning to spend $94 billion through 2030 in an aggressive push to build out its footprint. In May, the energy giant announced an all-stock agreement to acquire Dominion Energy. This deal will make NextEra the world's largest utility business, but the megamerger is facing intense regulatory scrutiny.

The company's dividend yield is holding strong at over 3%. The stock has risen just 2% this year. NextEra is a reliable income producer, but could see substantial growth through the early 2030s.
Constellation's approach is completely different from NextEra's. Constellation is the largest nuclear power operator in the U.S. It's also an independent power producer, meaning it sells electricity on the open market and not through a regulated utility model. This gives it greater pricing volatility, but potentially more upside.
Constellation is also a favorite among hyperscalers, including Meta Platforms and Microsoft. Its dividend yield is considerably less than NextEra's, but the earnings projections are higher.
Constellation's stock has declined significantly in 2026, falling over 20%. This has created a compelling entry point for investors. Much of the stock's downward trend is due to softer profit guidance and investor nervousness regarding the company's expensive acquisition of Calpine Corporation, which added short-term costs and debt to the balance sheet.
Which stock is better?
The better play right now depends heavily on the investor's risk tolerance. NextEra, with its regulated utility business, offers greater stability and income, thus lower risk. There's still upside potential as it grows its renewables arm, however. Constellation arguably has more growth potential, though, as it's even more closely tied to the AI boom. With that comes more volatility and risk. Both stocks have a lot going for them and serve a different purpose within a portfolio.
