In times like these, it's natural to be concerned, and even to consider taking money out of the stock market in search of safe assets, such as gold or bonds. But I think that's a mistake. First, if you're a long-term investor, you could potentially run up a big tax bill by closing positions where you've had significant gains.
Second, history shows us that the stock market is a consistent winner over time. Although short-term dips are inevitable, the market has historically rebounded and moved higher. Panicking now would deprive you of the opportunity to profit from the recovery.
Instead, I think this is an ideal time to consider some tried-and-true investments. Blue chip stocks are those that have a long history of profitability and stability. These companies are most often market leaders, offer well-known products or services, and are often generous in returning money to shareholders through stock buybacks or dividends.

The finance pick: Bank of America
North Carolina-based Bank of America (NYSE: BAC) isn't the biggest bank in the U.S. (JPMorgan Chase gets that title), but it's a mammoth banking institution, nonetheless. Bank of America has more than 3,600 banking locations and 15,000 ATMs. Customers are increasingly connecting online, with 25 million active Zelle users who sent and received 474 million transactions in the fourth quarter, up 12% from a year ago.
Bank of America offers consumer, business, and wealth management services, all of which are major revenue drivers. The bank's consumer banking segment generated net income of $3.3 billion and revenue of $11.2 billion in Q4, up 5% from a year ago. Its wealth management segment brought in another $6.6 billion in revenue and net income of $1.4 billion. Its global banking and global markets segments accounted for more than $3.1 billion in revenue.
Bank of America has increased its dividend annually for the past 12 years, and currently provides a yield of 2.3%.
The energy pick: ExxonMobil
Nothing says "blue chip energy stock" like ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM). The integrated oil and gas company has vast operations that include its upstream production, midstream pipelines, and downstream chemical and refining.
The size of ExxonMobil's business means that it can generate huge profits for its shareholders. Cash flow from operations in 2025 was $52 billion, which allowed ExxonMobil to deliver $28.8 billion in earnings. It posted free cash flow of $26.1 billion for the year, while it returned $37.2 billion to shareholders in the form of share repurchases and dividends.
ExxonMobil increased its dividend by 4% in December and has raised its dividend annually for the past 43 years. The payout currently offers a yield of 2.7%.
The technology pick: Alphabet
Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL) only recently became a dividend stock, having declared its first dividend in April 2024. The payout's current yield of 0.3% pales compared to others on this list. But I consider Alphabet a modern blue chip stock, given its enormously popular businesses, its huge revenue and profit streams, its dominant market position, and the company's newfound commitment to dividends.
Alphabet's Chrome browser and Google search engine are market share leaders. According to financial research firm MoffettNathanson, the company's YouTube video platform generated $62 billion in 2025, which moved it past Walt Disney to become the world's largest media company.
Revenue in 2025 was $402.8 billion, up 15% from 2024, and net income of $132.1 billion rose 32% from a year ago. The company's free cash flow in the trailing 12 months is a whopping $73.2 billion.
Alphabet is investing heavily in expanding its Google Cloud computing segment. But its hugely successful advertising business, powered by its internet dominance and YouTube, provides it with significant advantages that will allow it to become an emerging dividend stock that investors can count on for the long term.

That's why a new breed of nuclear stocks is garnering a sharp rise in interest. Two stocks in particular are leading the charge. For patient investors, these stocks could be the ticket to making a fortune.
Nuclear energy is positioned to succeed
Small modular reactor (SMR) technology -- which specializes in deploying smaller, modular reactors that dramatically lower initial lead times and costs while also being able to meet the needs of more remote, off-grid applications -- is experiencing a renaissance.
Originally conceived in the 1950s, interest and development of this technology stalled for decades. But in 2020, NuScale Power (NYSE: SMR) received the first approval from the U.S. Nuclear Energy Commission for an SMR power plant design. In 2025, it received another design approval for an even bigger plant. Oklo (NYSE: OKLO), another SMR stock, is currently in the process of approvals.
It's not hard to see what the market opportunity here is. The potential for SMR technology to meet the needs of the AI and data center industries is now a focal point for both companies' pitches to investors. NuScale's investor relations team is quick to point out that AI data center power demand is expected to triple between 2024 and 2030. The company believes that roughly 300 GW of new nuclear capacity will be needed to meet this "historical" electric demand growth. Meanwhile, data centers are the first thing mentioned in Oklo's investor presentations when speaking on potential growth catalysts.
Many analysts agree with the potential for SMR technology to meet the rapidly growing needs of the AI sector. A recent report from global consultancy Deloitte stressed the "rising power demand from data centers to drive artificial intelligence growth," concluding that "nuclear energy appears to be emerging as an attractive option."
SMR installations hold multiple advantages. These facilities deliver reliable base load power regardless of weather, while impressive energy density allows these facilities to be located in difficult or costly build sites through a smaller footprint. SMR plants are often scalable, allowing more bespoke deployments and the option to expand the plant's output over time. This technology can also greatly reduce a data center's potential carbon footprint -- historically a popular need among big tech firms with climate commitments.
Time to buy Oklo or NuScale Power stock?
The nuclear energy renaissance is already underway. According to Morgan Stanley, "nuclear capacity could more than double to 860 gigawatts (GW) by 2050, from 398 GW currently." The firm believes that investments throughout the nuclear value chain "could reach $2.2 trillion in the next 25 years."
But does this make SMR stocks like Oklo and NuScale Power a buy? The honest answer is: maybe.
Oklo and NuScale certainly could have a role to play in meeting the energy needs of the AI and data center industries. But the actual viability of their technology -- both from a cost and demand perspective -- remains unclear. Both companies have inked early customers. But keep in mind that Oklo's designs aren't even approved in the U.S. yet, while NuScale Power just saw a major project delayed by several years, with operation now not expected until 2034.
In short, there's a long way to go until we learn whether SMR technology will ever become mainstream. Some experts worry this approach to nuclear power will never prove more viable than a conventional, large nuclear plant.
But following a sharp correction, NuScale Power trades at a market cap of just $4.1 billion, with Oklo valued at just $9.6 billion. That's cheap compared to estimates for nuclear over the next few decades. A report from Bank of America, for example, sees this as a $10 trillion opportunity. But from now until 2040, it believes that SMR deployments will only total around 50 GW of new capacity -- less than 10% of the total growth expected.
NuScale Power and Oklo shares are much cheaper than they were just a few months ago. And the opportunity for nuclear could make these stocks extremely lucrative for patient shareholders. But these fortune-making stocks are not without notable risk.

On Dec. 31, billionaire Warren Buffett's illustrious investing career came to a close. Following six decades that saw Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRKA)(NYSE: BRKB) transform into a trillion-dollar business, the 95-year-old Oracle of Omaha officially handed the baton to his successor, Greg Abel.
But just because Buffett telegraphed his retirement eight months in advance, it doesn't mean he stopped positioning the company that he, and now-late right-hand man Charlie Munger, had built for future success.

Leading up to his retirement, Warren Buffett meaningfully slashed Berkshire's stake in Bank of America (NYSE: BAC) and, conservatively, piled around $1.2 billion in his final quarter as CEO into an integrated oil and gas stock that's soared since the year began.
Warren Buffett slashed his stake in Bank of America by half
Although investors have historically paid close attention to the stocks Berkshire's now-former billionaire boss was buying, the truth is that he was a persistent net seller of stocks leading into his retirement. For 13 consecutive quarters (Oct. 1, 2022 – Dec. 31, 2025), the Oracle of Omaha sold more stock than he purchased, to the cumulative tune of approximately $187 billion.
With the exception of Apple, no core holding of Berkshire Hathaway was pared down more aggressively than Bank of America, which is commonly known as "BofA." Between the midpoint of 2024 and the end of 2025, Buffett sold 515,556,072 shares of BofA, equating to roughly 50% of Berkshire's once 1.03-billion-share stake in the money-center goliath.
Profit-taking likely explains one reason for this persistent selling. In the summer of 2017, Buffett exercised 700 million warrants for BofA common stock at just $7.14 per share. During the fourth quarter of 2025, Bank of America stock primarily vacillated between $50 and $56 per share.
But profit-taking probably isn't the entire story.
Among U.S. money-center banks, BofA is the most sensitive to interest rate shifts. When the Federal Reserve aggressively raised interest rates from March 2022 to July 2023 to tame the highest inflation rate in four decades, it was Bank of America that benefited the most. However, with the nation's central bank firmly in a rate-easing cycle, these same dynamics are now reversed. As the Fed lowers interest rates, BofA's interest income could decline at a faster pace than its peers.
Another catalyst that may have encouraged Warren Buffett to send over 515 million shares of Bank of America to the chopping block is its valuation. While Berkshire's investing legend was known to bend one of his unwritten investing rules from time to time, he was unwavering when it came to valuation. If Buffett didn't believe he was getting a stake in a wonderful company at a fair price, he simply didn't buy.
When Berkshire Hathaway initially invested in the preferred stock of BofA in August 2011, its common shares were trading at a 62% discount to book value. During the fourth quarter of 2025, Bank of America topped a 40% premium to its book value. The value proposition that attracted Buffett to BofA for so long appears to be gone.
Berkshire's now-former billionaire boss made a $1.2 billion wager on Chevron
Although the Oracle of Omaha was a net seller of equities for more than three years leading into his retirement, this doesn't mean value was nonexistent.
During the fourth quarter, Berkshire Hathaway's Form 13F shows 8,091,570 shares of integrated oil and gas titan Chevron (NYSE: CVX) were added. While we don't know the purchase price of these shares, eyeballing Chevron's average quarterly share price puts the cost basis at around $1.2 billion.
Thus far, this is looking like a genius final chess move. Shares of Chevron have gained 25% year to date, through the closing bell on March 6, translating into an unrealized profit of approximately $300 million.
There's little question that the Iran war is a catalyst for oil stocks. Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz -- through which approximately 20% of global petroleum liquids flow daily -- is tightening crude oil supply and driving a parabolic move in oil prices. Drilling is the bread-and-butter operating segment for Chevron in terms of margins.
However, Berkshire's investing legend likely wasn't thinking about a geopolitical event when boosting his company's stake in Chevron. Rather, it's the company's integrated operating model that often attracts investors.
In addition to highly profitable drilling operations, Chevron oversees transmission pipelines, chemical plants, and refineries. These midstream and downstream operations act as hedges against a significant decline in oil and/or natural gas.
The stability of Chevron's operating cash flow has allowed the company to offer a hearty capital-return program. It's increased its base annual dividend for 39 consecutive years, and is certainly no stranger to repurchasing its stock. Companies with steady or growing net income that can lower their outstanding share count through buybacks can expect a corresponding boost in earnings per share.
Even though energy hasn't played a particularly large role in Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio over several decades, Buffett recognizes that Chevron provides necessary goods and services. He was always a fan of businesses with sustainable moats -- and especially appreciated when they offered meaningful capital-return programs.

Salesforce, Inc. CRM has initiated a landmark $25 billion bond sale, earmarking the proceeds primarily for aggressive share buybacks. CRM is part of the Zacks Internet - Software industry and has a Zacks #3 (Hold). The offering is slated to close on March 13, pending standard closing conditions. The transaction marks one of the largest debt offerings in the company’s history and reflects a growing trend of corporations tapping the bond market to fund shareholder returns.
However, investor demand appeared weaker than expected, with buyers seeking higher yields than in the company’s previous debt offerings. This month, the industrial stocks that stand out are Archer Aviation (NYSE: ACHR), SSR Mining (NASDAQ: SSRM), and USA Rare Earth Metals (NASDAQ: USAR).
1. Capitalize on Archer Aviation's recent post-earnings plunge
Archer Aviation, an early-stage electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) company, kicked off March with the release of its fourth quarter and full-year earnings. While eVTOL stocks were popular throughout much of 2025, bullish sentiment has faded this year. Investors seem to have grown impatient with the industry's relatively slow pace of commercialization.
So, it's no surprise that investors reacted negatively to Archer's latest results and guidance. Shares fell by more than 10% immediately after earnings and have continued to trend lower. For the quarter, adjusted EBITDA losses came in at $137.9 million, while analysts were forecasting $122 million. If that's not bad enough, management anticipates adjusted EBITDA losses to rise to between $160 million and $180 million in the first quarter, well above Wall Street forecasts calling for adjusted EBITDA losses of just $110 million.
Yet while investors remain focused on near-term losses, Archer's long-term prospects continue to strengthen. With over $2 billion in liquidity, analysts forecast the start-up has enough cash on hand to sustain operations through 2029. In the meantime, Archer remains on track to launch air taxi service pilot programs in the U.S. and the United Arab Emirates this year. While the company remains years away from generating material revenue, further progress later this year could kick-start a long-term rebound for shares.
2. An asset sale creates a new catalyst for SSR Mining
SSR Mining has thus far been one of the best mining stocks to capitalize on rising prices in precious metals. Shares in this gold mining company have surged threefold in the past year, thanks to the big run-up in spot gold. However, following a recent announcement, there may be a new catalyst on tap, one that is less dependent on a further gold price spike.
That would be SSR Mining's plans to sell an 80% stake in its Copler mining site in Turkey for $1.5 billion. The mining site, idled in 2024 following a fatal landslide, has been a troublesome asset for the company. By divesting most of its interest in Copler, SSR Mining stands to benefit in two ways.
First, this deal frees up a substantial amount of a cash relative to the company's $6.2 billion market cap. The company could use this money to fund new projects and acquisitions, or even an aggressive share repurchase program.
Second, the company's exposure to Turkey, a higher-risk mining jurisdiction, is a key reason why the stock has traded at a valuation discount to peers like Barrick Gold. SSR Mining trades for 8.4 times forward earnings, while Barrick trades for around 12 times forward earnings.
Bank of America analyst Lawson Winder recently increased his price target for SSR Mining from $23 to $45.50 per share, noting that following the Copler sale, assets in low-risk North America will represent 93% of the company's asset value.
3. A recent asset purchase further strengthens USA Rare Earth's bull case
While an asset sale may be a potential needle mover for SSR Mining, it could also bode well for USA Rare Earth shares. The company, which has received billions in public and private funding to help America reduce its reliance on China-sourced rare-earth metals, owned only 80% of its Round Top rare-earth metals project in Texas until recently.
However, with USA Rare Earth now acquiring Texas Mineral Resources in a $73 million all-stock transaction, USA Rare Earth will own 100% of the project. While this transaction doesn't necessarily accelerate the timeline to commercialization, it could increase the potential upside, assuming the project goes according to plan.
Management believes USA Rare Earth can hit the commercialization stage by 2028, and by 2030, could be supplying as much as 40,000 metric tons per day of rare-earth metals and critical mineral feedstock. Per management forecasts, this could mean annual revenue and cash flow of $2.6 billion and $900 million, respectively. Not too shabby, compared to the stock's $3.6 billion market cap.

March isn't turning out to be a very good month for Grocery Outlet Holding (NASDAQ: GO). After recovering slightly from last week's swoon, the discount food retailer again dipped into the red on Wednesday. Its shares lost nearly 2% of their value that trading session, following an analyst's price target cut.
Cutting time
The person with the scissors was Robert Ohmes of Bank of America Securities. He reduced his fair value assessment for Grocery Outlet to $10.50 per share from his preceding $13. In doing so, he maintained his neutral recommendation on the stock.

Ohmes' comes almost a week after Grocery Outlet published its final earnings report for 2025. This wasn't very pleasing for Mr. Market, as the company missed the average analyst net income forecast for the fourth quarter. Worse, management provided full-year guidance of declines in both metrics. And both the top- and bottom-line projections missed the consensus prognosticator estimates.
According to reports, the analyst expressed skepticism that the retailer could return to comparable sales growth (it posted a nearly 1% dip in comparable sales during the quarter). He also doesn't feel as if shoppers at its outlets will buy substantially more groceries.
A company on a diet
In its earnings release, Grocery Outlet said it was launching a "business optimization plan." Among other moves, the rationalization effort will include the shuttering of 36 stores. So basically, Grocery Outlet is on a corporate diet, trying to get into better shape. That doesn't bode well for the immediate future of the stock, and after that, the company's prospects look murky. I'd avoid its equity for now.

Why Grocery Outlet Stock Withered on Wednesday

Capital One Financial's (NYSE: COF) stock has dramatically underperformed year to date in 2026 as of this writing. The stock has dropped more than 20% compared to a 1% or so decline in the S&P 500 index (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC), a 2% decline for the average bank, and roughly 10% drops for payment processors Visa (NYSE: V) and Mastercard (NYSE: MA). The weak relative performance actually makes some sense, but how does Capital One get back on track?
Recession fears are on the rise
Historically, Capital One has focused on extending credit to customers with lower credit scores. That can be a very profitable decision when the economy is strong, but during recessions, those customers tend to default more often than those with higher credit scores. With rising energy prices, intensifying geopolitical conflict, and consumers already feeling stretched, the risk of a recession seems elevated right now. It isn't shocking that Capital One Financial's stock has dramatically underperformed other financial stocks and the market.

However, Capital One Financial has changed dramatically, given its recent acquisition of Discover Financial. Like Visa and Mastercard, Discover is a payment processor that collects a small fee every time a Discover card is used. That creates a more stable foundation for Capital One's business, which could grow over time if it can shift current customers to Discover-branded cards.
The proof will come when Capital One faces adversity
The integration of Discover is still underway, so the cost of that effort continues to hit Capital One's income statement. However, once that process is complete, Capital One can then prove that the $35.3 billion acquisition was worth it. In fact, a big opportunity on that front would likely arise if a recession occurs.
If Capital One manages through a recession in relative stride, investors will likely become far more comfortable with the business. That could lead the stock to outperform the market as it recovers from the recent drawdown.
Notably, Capital One ended 2025 with a tier one capital ratio of 14.3%. That's above Bank of America's (NYSE: BAC) tier one ratio of 12.8%. The tier one ratio is a measure of a bank's preparedness for adversity. In other words, Capital One is, perhaps, better prepared to deal with a recession than some of the largest banks in the United States.
Capital One is best suited to more aggressive investors
Even if Capital One's acquisition of Discover makes the business more resilient, risk-averse investors should probably still avoid it. The company's business model is still aggressive, noting that the company has already agreed to buy another company, Brex, for $5.1 billion before it has fully completed the integration of Discover. And the focus on lower-credit-score customers hasn't changed.
However, if you are a more aggressive, growth-minded investor, strong financial performance during a recession could help to turn Capital One's relative stock performance around.

Here's How Capital One Financial Beats The Market From Here

When it comes to banking giants, JPMorgan JPM and Bank of America BAC are often at the top of mind. As two of the most diversified financial institutions in the United States, they offer a broad spectrum of services, including retail banking, investment banking (IB) and wealth management on a global scale.
JPM and BAC are highly sensitive to macroeconomic factors such as interest rates, inflation and the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy. While they generally benefit from rising interest rates, current challenges, including lingering geopolitical concerns and uncertainty around future Fed actions, pose significant headwinds to their performance.
Let’s analyze JPMorgan's and Bank of America's business models to determine which currently presents the stronger investment opportunity.
JPMorgan & Bank of America: Different Approaches for Growth
JPM and BAC are pursuing different strategies to enhance their operations, boost market share and seize cross-selling opportunities.
JPMorgan is expanding its reach despite the rise of mobile and online banking. It plans to open more than 500 new branches by 2027, with more than 160 across 30 states to be opened this year. This move will solidify its position as the bank with the largest branch network, covering all 48 U.S. states. In 2021, the company launched its digital retail bank, Chase, in the U.K. and plans to expand the reach of its digital bank across the European Union (to open a digital bank in Germany by mid-2026).
Further, JPM has been growing through on-bolt acquisitions, both domestic and international. In 2023, the company increased its stake in Brazil's C6 Bank to 46% from 40%, formed a strategic alliance with Cleareye.ai and acquired Aumni and First Republic Bank (a FDIC-assisted deal). These deals, along with several others, are expected to support the bank's plan to diversify revenues and expand the fee income product suite and consumer bank digitally.
In contrast, Bank of America has prioritized organic, domestic growth through a strategic expansion of its physical and digital presence. By 2027, it plans to expand its financial center network and open more than 150 centers, reinforcing its commitment to nationwide accessibility. It also remains committed to providing modern and state-of-the-art financial centers through its ongoing renovation and modernization project.
Over the past few years, the company has been renovating and updating its existing financial centers across the country for clients to engage with financial specialists and ensure a consistent and modern experience across all centers. These initiatives, along with the success of the person-to-person money transfer system Zelle and the digital financial assistant Erica, will enable BAC to improve digital offerings.
JPM & BAC: Prospects of the IB Business
As global deal-making activities came to a grinding halt at the beginning of 2022, mainly due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, fears of economic slowdown and high inflation numbers, the IB business of JPM and BAC was majorly affected. Nonetheless, the trend has reversed since 2024, with both having recorded a solid turnaround in the IB fees. The momentum is likely to continue in the first quarter of 2026.
Speaking of the numbers, JPMorgan's total IB fees (in the CIB segment) jumped 36% year over year and 7% in 2025. Last year, the company captured an 8.4% wallet share. Coming to Bank of America, in 2024, IB fees soared 31% year over year. In 2025, it increased 8%.
Looking ahead, a healthy pipeline, resilient mergers and acquisitions (M&As) demand (as companies are seeking scale, cost synergies and technology capabilities to remain competitive) and leadership position set JPM and BAC up for stronger IB fee growth as macro conditions become more supportive.
JPM & BAC: Interest Rate Sensitivity Analysis
Like all banks, JPMorgan and Bank of America depend on interest rates to generate revenues. Given the lingering geopolitical apprehensions (including the recent U.S.-Iran war) and macroeconomic ambiguity, the path for rate cuts seems uncertain.
JPMorgan’s net interest income (NII) witnessed a five-year (2020-2025) compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.8%. This was largely driven by the acquisition of First Republic Bank in 2023 and the high-interest rate regime since 2022. Though lower rates will likely adversely impact the company’s NII because of an asset-sensitive balance sheet, decent loan demand and solid economic growth are likely to offer support. JPM expects NII to be roughly $104.5 billion for 2026, up roughly 9% year over year.
On the other hand, Bank of America is one of the most rate-sensitive banks. Yet, when the Fed lowered the interest rates by 100 basis points last year, the company’s NII benefited from it. Over the last five years (2020-2025), the company’s NII recorded a CAGR of 6.7%. Fixed-rate asset repricing, higher loan balance and decline in deposit costs will keep driving NII expansion. Management projects NII growth to be in the range of 5-7% this year.
JPMorgan & Bank of America’s Robust Capital Distributions
JPM and BAC are showcasing solid capital returns that reflect confidence in their liquidity and earnings stability. Being part of “systematically important financial institutions,” they are required to undergo annual stress tests conducted by the Fed before announcing any capital distributions.
Last September, JPMorgan raised its quarterly dividend by 7% to $1.50 per share. Over the past five years, the company has increased dividends six times, at an annualized growth rate of 10.05%. Likewise, Bank of America increased its quarterly dividend in July 2024 by 8% to 28 cents per share. It raised its dividend four times in the last five years, with an annualized dividend growth rate of 8.64%.
JPM and BAC also have share repurchase programs in place. Last year, JPMorgan authorized a new share repurchase program worth $50 billion, which had almost $33.8 billion authorization remaining as of Dec. 31, 2025. In 2025, Bank of America announced a new share repurchase plan, with an authorization to buy back $40 billion worth of shares.
JPM & BAC’s Near-Term Headwinds
JPMorgan and Bank of America’s financial performance is heavily influenced by the Fed’s monetary policy changes and overall economic growth. The current major concern for these banks is the economic slowdown because of the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict and resultant uncertainty. This has added complexity to the Fed's goal of bringing inflation down to its 2% target.
A challenging operating backdrop is likely to suppress loan demand, particularly in areas like commercial lending and mortgages. As demand for loans weakens, JPM and BAC could see a slowdown in NII growth, a key driver of bank earnings. Also, both banks remain vigilant about the effects of continuous high rates on their loan portfolios. The impact of trade policy and the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict are likely to put pressure on prices, thus keeping inflation high in the near term.
JPM & BAC’s Prospects & Valuation Analysis
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for JPMorgan’s 2026 and 2027 revenue implies year-over-year growth of 5.6% and 3.4%, respectively. Over the past month, the Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2026 and 2027 earnings has been revised upward to $21.73 and $23.40, respectively, indicating growth of 6.8% and 7.7%.

The Zacks Consensus Estimate for Bank of America’s 2026 and 2027 revenue suggests year-over-year growth of 7.5% and 5.1%, respectively. Over the past month, the Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2026 and 2027 earnings has been revised upward to $4.32 and $4.95, respectively, indicating growth of 13.4% and 14.5%.

Valuation-wise, JPM is currently trading at the 12-month trailing price-to-tangible book (P/TB) of 2.85X, and BAC is trading at the 12-month trailing P/TB of 1.76X. While JPMorgan commands a premium over Bank of America, its valuation is justified, given its solid growth trajectory.

JPM or BAC: Which Stock Deserves a Spot in Your Portfolio?
This year, JPM’s shares have lost 10.4%, while Bank of America declined 11.7%. The S&P 500 Index has slipped 1.1% in the same time frame.

JPMorgan is pursuing a broader growth strategy than Bank of America, combining U.S. branch expansion with digital banking growth globally. That wider footprint supports more durable long-term growth. Its acquisitions have also strengthened digital, wealth management and consumer banking, helping diversify revenues and drive fee income more effectively than BAC’s more cautious approach.
In IB, JPMorgan remains the global leader in fees and market share, leaving it well-positioned for an eventual M&A recovery. Its strong capital return profile also underscores financial strength and shareholder focus. Though JPM trades at a premium to BAC, that valuation looks warranted given its stronger execution, broader international exposure and more diversified earnings base. Overall, JPMorgan appears to be the more attractive investment option.

JPMorgan vs. Bank of America: Which Big Bank Stock is the Better Bet?

At the Royal Bank of Canada Global Financial Institutions Conference on Tuesday, Bank of America BAC co-president Dean Athanasia struck an upbeat tone on the company’s capital markets business for the first quarter of 2026. The comments lifted investor sentiment, with BAC shares rising 1.4% by the close and snapping the losing streak from last week.
Athanasia noted that investment banking (IB) fees have grown nearly 10% year over year so far this quarter. In the fourth quarter of 2025, IB fees of $1.67 billion were up marginally year over year as the plunge in equity underwriting income was more than offset by higher advisory revenues and stable debt underwriting income. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for IB fees is pegged at $1.85 billion for the ongoing quarter.
Further, Bank of America’s Global Markets revenues are projected to increase at a low double-digit rate in the first quarter of 2026, driven by elevated volatility and robust client activity. Athanasia said, “We've got, whatever it is, 15, 16 more days left of trading that we'll see where the results go, but a lot of activity.” He cautioned, however, that volatility arising from the conflict in the Middle East could still pressure results by the end of the quarter. Even with this risk, the Global Markets unit is on track to record its 16th consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth in sales and trading revenues. In the previous quarter, BAC generated $4.52 billion in sales and trading revenues, up 10% from a year earlier. The consensus estimate for first-quarter 2026 sales and trading revenues is pegged at $5.32 billion.
Additionally, in wealth management, Athanasia noted that "fees are up double-digits. That's good for the first quarter.” Bank of America’s net interest income is anticipated to increase 7% year over year on the back of decent loan and deposit growth.
With sales and trading, IB and wealth management accounting for more than 50% of Bank of America’s fee income, ongoing momentum in these areas should drive solid growth. The consensus estimate for non-interest income is $14.02 billion, suggesting a rise of 9% from the prior-year quarter.
What Does BAC’s Peers Expect for IB & Trading in Q1?
Like Bank of America, JPMorgan JPM and Citigroup C are expected to witness robust capital markets performance in the first quarter of 2026.
During the February company update, JPMorgan struck a notably constructive tone on deal activity and capital markets momentum. Management expects IB fees to rise in the mid-teen percentage in the first quarter of 2026, potentially trending toward the high teens. In terms of the trading business, JPMorgan projects markets revenues to grow in the mid-teen range as well, supported by elevated volumes during bouts of volatility.
Citigroup, at the Royal Bank of Canada Global Financial Institutions Conference, reiterated its strategic priorities and financial targets, highlighting strong growth opportunities despite persistent geopolitical and macroeconomic uncertainties. Citigroup expects first-quarter 2026 IB fees and markets revenues (equities and fixed income) to grow in the mid-teens year over year, supported by deal-making and equity capital markets activities.
