Don't judge a book by its cover: Artemis III
To understand why people might get this story wrong, consider the headline: On Feb. 27, newly appointed NASA administrator Jared Isaacman took to X to announce that the Artemis II mission, which has been repeatedly delayed already, will be delayed again until April. Over 10 days, Artemis II will sail around the moon and back again (and not land on the moon along the way).
Likewise, the following Artemis III mission will not land on the moon in 2028 as previously planned. Instead, it will merely travel to Low Earth Orbit (LEO), there to practice docking with various lunar landing vessels.
Taken together, these two revelations sure sound like bad news -- more delays at NASA and no moon landing for at least another couple of years.

But here's the thing: We're still planning to land on the moon. It's just that the rocket that does that will be Artemis IV.
An Artemis by any other number
So why the switcheroo? "Launching a lunar rocket every three years is not a strategy consistent with success. ... This is by far the lowest launch cadence in the history of America's space program," says Isaacman.
To rectify this, NASA wants to launch more frequently. Artemis III will be pulled forward one year to 2027, and astronauts will use it to practice docking procedures. (The moon landing, when it happens, will involve astronauts traveling to the moon on an Orion spacecraft, then transferring to a lunar lander for their descent to, and ascent from the moon, after which they will transfer back to Orion for return to Earth.)
One year later -- but still hitting the 2028 target date -- Artemis IV, not III, will conduct the actual landing. Indeed, because NASA is accelerating its launch cadence to once every 10 months (instead of once every three years), it may land on the moon twice in 2028: first with Artemis IV and then with Artemis V.
What else is up with Artemis?
Now that we've established the new timeline, let's take a look at the hardware.
I've already described two elements of the Artemis missions: an Orion capsule to go to and from lunar orbit, and a lunar lander (SpaceX's "Human Landing System") to go to and from the moon's surface. Arguably, the biggest part of any Artemis launch, though, is the rocket they ride into space.
NASA calls this rocket the Space Launch System, or SLS. Boeing (NYSE: BA) builds it. Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) adds solid rocket boosters to give it extra "oomph." Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) then puts an Orion spacecraft on top of it.
The sum total of all these efforts comes to $4.1 billion in costs for each Artemis launch -- partly because the rockets launch so infrequently that there's very little economy of scale involved and partly because Boeing is still evolving SLS and has been spending money on developing a more powerful version.
That's going to stop.
To help control costs, Isaacman wants to "standardize" Boeing's SLS moon rocket so that NASA can build more of them, faster and cheaper. Instead of a planned capability upgrade to "Block II," NASA will instruct Boeing to create a "near-Block I" version of SLS that includes the proven Centaur 5 second stage that Boeing and Lockheed's United Launch Alliance uses on its Vulcan Centaur rocket, rather than the more powerful "Exploration Upper Stage" Boeing had been working on.
What it means for space stocks
Artemis IV will be the first SLS rocket to use the Centaur second stage. All subsequent launches will use it, too, thus "standardizing" the design. If this enables Boeing and its partners to cut costs, it could be very good news -- not just for NASA, but also for its contractors.
How?
Well, $4.1 billion is a very high price to pay for a rocket launch, especially when Elon Musk and SpaceX are not being shy about arguing their Starship rocket would be much cheaper. This has led to active calls in Congress to cancel SLS outright and replace it with a cheaper rocket -- if not Starship, then perhaps with Blue Origin's New Glen rocket.
In one fell swoop, though, Isaacman has proposed a plan that stands a decent chance of getting us back to the moon by 2028, and on schedule; cutting SLS per-launch costs to a level that makes launches more affordable; and thereby making SLS more palatable to Congress -- such that Boeing, Northrop, and Lockheed may be allowed to keep building SLS rockets and not hand the rocket contract to Elon Musk on a silver platter.
I call this a win-win-win for all concerned. Boeing should send Isaacman a thank-you note.

SpaceX, Boeing, and Lockheed Will Take America Back to the Moon -- but Not Just Yet

A little over six years ago, Boeing flew the first uncrewed Orbital Flight Test of its new CST-100 Starliner, attempting to dock the spacecraft with the International Space Station (ISS) -- and failing. Two years later, Starliner did successfully reach ISS (albeit with some glitches along the way). But when Boeing went for three in 2024 -- this time with astronauts on board -- it ended up stranding the astronauts on ISS for months longer than planned until they were finally rescued by a SpaceX spacecraft.

Starliner hasn't flown since... and a new NASA report raises doubts about whether it should ever fly again.
What NASA says about Starliner
This new NASA report, titled the "Starliner Propulsion System Anomalies during the Crewed Flight Test Investigation Report," runs to 311 pages and describes how "technical, organizational, and cultural contributors" all added up to a failed Crewed Flight Test (CFT) for Boeing in 2024.
NASA identified four key hardware defects with the Boeing spacecraft: Five thrusters failed on the service module and one on the crew module. Seven of eight helium manifolds had leaky seals. Finally and perhaps most critically, redundancy was lacking in the spacecraft's propulsion system, such that more than one material failure might have been enough to prevent a safe return to Earth. As NASA associate administrator Amit Kshatriya commented, "[W]e almost did have a really terrible day."
NASA further faulted Boeing for inadequate testing of the hardware and misdiagnosis of anomalies in Starliner's previous flights. This was worsened by NASA's poor oversight of Boeing's work.
Ultimately, NASA decided to classify the CFT mission as a "Type A mishap," which can encompass disasters such as the loss of a spacecraft and even crew fatalities. In the instant case, NASA chose "mission failure" as the best description of the incident, based on Starliner losing flight control when docking.
Citing "critical vulnerabilities" discovered with the spacecraft -- as well as in how Boeing built it and how NASA oversaw its construction -- NASA issued 61 separate formal recommendations for next steps to address the problems it revealed.
And yet, NASA did not cancel the Starliner program outright.
Starliner wins a reprieve
New NASA administrator Jared Isaacman explained that "America benefits from competition and redundancy." In so doing, he highlighted two reasons NASA might want to give Starliner (yet another) chance to work:
First, so that SpaceX doesn't become NASA's sole source of transportation to and from ISS -- leaving the space agency with no alternatives if SpaceX's Falcon 9 rockets are grounded for some reason. And second, so that SpaceX cannot charge whatever it wants for this service. So long as Boeing is even just technically a rival in this race, SpaceX must compete on price to win its contracts.
But this does not mean NASA is happy with the situation.
"NASA will not fly another crew on Starliner until technical causes are understood and corrected, the propulsion system is fully qualified, and appropriate investigation recommendations are implemented," says Isaacman. At best, this means the Boeing spacecraft might be used only for uncrewed cargo runs to and from ISS -- or not at all -- until the anomalies have been addressed.
That said, there's still a potential worst-case scenario that investors need to anticipate.
Time's running out for Starliner
When Boeing was first awarded its $4.2 billion Commercial Crew contract to shuttle astronauts to and from ISS back in 2014, the contract terms envisioned Boeing flying six crewed missions. SpaceX was also awarded six missions (but only $2.6 billion) and has actually flown 13 (with one more scheduled).
At NASA's current launch rate of two crewed missions per year, with ISS scheduled for retirement after 2030 (although that date may be extended to 2032), there's really only time left for perhaps nine more flights total (or 13 if ISS retires in 2032). Assuming future flights are divided evenly between the two contractors, the only way I see Boeing running all six flights it's been allotted (and collecting all $4.2 billion it was awarded) is if ISS does get extended through 2032.
Conversely, if ISS goes away in 2030, Boeing's going to miss out on at least $1 billion in expected revenue -- maybe even more if it takes too long to get Starliner fixed.
Granted, Boeing's a giant company, doing nearly $90 billion in annual revenue. If its Starliner troubles cost it $1 billion in lost revenue, I think the company will survive just fine. Still, $1 billion is not nothing; the loss is still going to sting.
And the biggest loss of all will be to Boeing's reputation as a space company.

Despite 311 Pages of Criticism, NASA Still Won't Cancel the Boeing Starliner

Howmet Aerospace Inc.’s HWM investors have been experiencing some short-term gains from the stock. The company’s shares have surged 33% in the past six months, outpacing the industry and the S&P 500, which have returned 8.8% and 3.3%, respectively. The company has also outshone its peers like Textron Inc. TXT and RTX Corporation RTX , which have returned 13.4% and 30.9%, respectively, over the same time frame.

Closing at $251.65 in the last trading session, the stock is trading close to its 52-week high of $267.31 and significantly higher than its 52-week low of $105.04. Rising global air passenger traffic has boosted demand for wide-body aircraft, resulting in higher OEM spending and steadily increasing demand for the aircraft parts and products supplied by the company.
Revenues from the commercial aerospace market increased 13% year over year in the fourth quarter of 2025, which constituted 53% of its business. Also, in the first, second and third quarters, revenues from the market increased 9%, 8% and 15% year over year, respectively. The sustained strength was attributed to new, more fuel-efficient aircraft with reduced carbon emissions and increased spare demand for engines. The Boeing Company BA is also anticipated to witness a gradual production recovery, particularly in the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, which is expected to boost demand for HWM’s products in the market.
The defense side of the aerospace market has also been witnessing positive momentum driven by steady government support. The company has been witnessing robust orders for engine spares for the F-35 program and spares for legacy fighters like the F-15 and the F-16. In the fourth quarter, revenues from the defense aerospace market surged 20% year over year, constituting 17% of the company’s revenues. Also, in the first, second and third quarters, revenues from this market increased 19%, 21% and 24% year over year, respectively.
The company’s measures to reward shareholders are encouraging. In 2025, HWM paid dividends of $181 million and repurchased shares worth $700 million. In August 2025, the company hiked its dividend by 20% to 12 cents per share (annually: 48 cents), marking its second dividend hike in 2025. Also, in July 2024, its board approved an increase in the share repurchase program by $2 billion to $2.487 billion of its common stock. As of Feb. 6, 2025, HWM’s total share repurchase authorization available was $1.35 billion.

LATAM Airlines Group (LTM reported a year-over-year increase in revenue passenger-kilometers (RPK: a measure of air traffic) for February 2026.
LATAM Airlines reported an 11.4% year-over-year increase in consolidated capacity, measured in available seat-kilometers (ASK). The uptick was driven by a 14.8% increase in international operations and a 12.5% increase in capacity in LATAM Airlines Brazil’s domestic market.
LTM’s consolidated traffic, measured in revenue passenger-kilometers (RPK), grew 14.4% year over year owing to growth across all segments. International operations rose 18% with LATAM Airlines Brazil’s domestic market surging 15.6% year over year.
Since traffic outpaced capacity expansion, the consolidated load factor (percentage of seats filled by passengers) for February 2026 rose to 85.6% from 83.3% in February 2025.
In February 2026, LATAM Airlines transported 7.1 million passengers, an increase of 9.3% year over year. So far this year, LATAM Airlines transported 15.3 million passengers across its network, reflecting an increase of 9.2% year over year.

February 2026 Traffic of Another Airline Company
Apart from LATAM Airlines, another airline company that has reported traffic numbers for February 2026 is Ryanair Holdings RYAAY.
European carrier, Ryanair reported solid traffic numbers for February 2026, driven by upbeat air-travel demand. The number of passengers transported on Ryanair flights was 13.3 million in February 2026, reflecting a 6% year-over-year increase. Apart from a year-over-year surge, RYAAY’s traffic in February was much more than the January reading of 12.7 million, highlighting continued momentum from the beginning of the year.
Ryanair’s load factor (percentage of seats filled by passengers) remained flat year over year at 92% in February 2026, reflecting stable and consistent demand for the carrier’s services. But it improved sequentially from the load factor of 91% reported in January 2026.
RYAAY operated more than 75,000 flights in February 2026. This marks an improvement from 73,000 flights operated in January 2026, reflecting expanded capacity to meet strong passenger demand.
We would like to remind investors that Ryanair carried 200.2 million passengers (traffic up 9% year over year) in its fiscal year ending March 2025, positioning itself as the first European airline to reach 200 million passengers in a single year. As a result, RYAAY is now the world’s leading low-fare airline in terms of passenger traffic, with low fares and reduced costs acting as the main catalyst. During the first nine months of fiscal 2026, RYAAY’s traffic grew 4% year over year to 166.5 million passengers.
Given the aforesaid encouraging backdrops, Ryanair has unveiled its raised traffic outlook for fiscal 2026 (concurrent with its third-quarter fiscal 2026 earnings release on Jan. 26, 2026). Ryanair now expects its fiscal 2026 traffic to grow 4% to 208 million passengers (prior view: 207 million), owing to earlier than expected Boeing BA deliveries and solid demand during the first nine months of fiscal 2026.

LATAM Airlines February 2026 Traffic Improves Year Over Year

Relatively low engine retirements are extending the life of the aircraft engines that the company services.
Surging demand for power for data centers is strengthening the business case for its new business converting aircraft engines into power turbines.
FTAI Aviation (NASDAQ: FTAI) shares rose by 12.3% in February, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence. The move continues the stock's superb performance over the last year (up 178%) and in 2026 (up 38%) at the time of writing. That kind of performance doesn't come without reason, or in this case, reasons. Simply put, FTAI's core aviation market is thriving, and its exciting new business, FTAI Power, is preparing for a bright future servicing AI data center needs.
FTAI prepares for a big year ahead
The company is best known for servicing narrow-body aircraft engines from Boeing and Airbus. While aircraft engine manufacturers, such as GE Aerospace and RTX's Pratt & Whitney, sell engines with lucrative long-term service agreements (LTSA) attached, these engines can last more than 40 years, and there's ample opportunity for FTAI to offer cost-effective servicing after the LTSA expires.

It's been a great market to be in over the last few years, as engine manufacturers struggle to ramp up production, which means older engines (such as the CFM56 and V2500) are run more.
Indeed, FTAI CEO Joseph Adams outlined on the recentearnings callthat "The long-term outlook for the aftermarket on these platforms continues to strengthen as airlines increasingly opt to extend the life of their existing fleets rather than retiring aircraft for the newest technology." Moreover, he expects total industry maintenance spending to grow to $25 billion in 2026 from $22 billion as engine retirements "remain at historically low levels" amid " heavier maintenance overhauls that signal longer economic useful life for these engine types."
That's great news for FTAI's core market. There was more good news for FTAI investors earlier in the year when it signed a multi-year agreement with CFM International (a joint venture between GE Aerospace and Safran) to provide component and service support for CFM56 engines (used on the legacy Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 family of aircraft). While it sounds counterintuitive to do a deal with a servicing rival, it benefits GE as it can ensure CFM56 engines are serviced (lengthening their life), and it supplies FTAI with parts while focusing on servicing its newer LEAP engines as part of its LTSAs.
FTAI Power powers on
The market is also very excited about FTAI Power, the company's brand-new business dedicated to converting CFM56 engines into power turbines (aeroderivatives) for data centers. Management recently confirmed it was building inventory, retrofitting its factories, and building a supply chain in anticipation of delivering its first FTAI Power aeroderivative in the fourth quarter of 2026.
What it means to investors
If you bought the stock in anticipation of ongoing strength in servicing commercial aviation engines and the potential for FTAI Power with data centers, then you would probably be pleased by the company's earnings report in February and the ongoing development of the business.

Here's Why Booming Aerospace and Data Center Markets Are Powering This Stock Higher in 2026

The Boeing Company’s BA shares have rallied 13.2% in three months compared with the Zacks Aerospace-Defense industry’s growth of 12.3%. The company is seeing growth across its commercial, defense and services businesses, driven by robust aircraft demand, significant contract awards and a solid backlog that underpins sustained revenue growth.

Other defense stocks, such as RTX Corporation RTX and General Dynamics GD, have also gained during the same period. Shares of RTX and General Dynamics have risen 19.2% and 5.8%, respectively, during the same time frame. RTX continues to receive ample orders for its wide range of combat-proven defense products from the Pentagon and its foreign allies. General Dynamics benefits from a solid number of award wins and a strong global presence.

Factors in Favor of BA
Boeing remains one of the largest aircraft manufacturers in the United States in terms of revenues, orders and deliveries, particularly in the commercial aerospace industry. Thanks to the steadily growing demand trend in commercial aerospace, the company, being a prominent jet manufacturer, has been witnessing solid delivery and order activities lately.
The company’s Boeing Commercial Airplanes segment registered 181% year-over-year growth in its delivery count for the fourth quarter of 2025, which resulted in a 139% surge in this unit’s revenues.
The outlook for the aerospace giant’s defense and space business also remains optimistic. In particular, the current U.S. government’s inclination toward strengthening the nation’s defense and space systems should act as a growth catalyst for
Boeing.
During the fourth quarter of 2025, the Boeing Defense, Space & Security unit booked $15 billion in orders, including contracts for 15 KC-46A tankers from the U.S. Air Force and 96 Apaches from Poland, which resulted in a solid backlog amount of $85 billion for this segment as of Dec. 31, 2025. Such solid contract wins and subsequent backlog count should continue to bolster the BDS unit’s revenues, which registered solid year-over-year growth of 37% in the fourth quarter.
In February 2026, Boeing and Sun PhuQuoc Airways announced that the new Vietnam-based carrier had ordered up to 40 787 Dreamliner jets to serve as the backbone of its widebody fleet. The deal strengthens Boeing’s presence in Southeast Asia, one of the fastest-growing aviation markets, while potentially opening the door for additional aircraft orders as the airline expands its fleet.
Challenges Faced by BA
While Boeing presents strong growth potential, it also faces several key challenges that investors should weigh carefully. Although global air travel demand continues to recover and expand, the aviation industry remains constrained by persistent supply-chain disruptions, including shortages of engines, castings and other critical components.
These bottlenecks have delayed aircraft deliveries and increased production costs, limiting manufacturers’ ability to fully capitalize on rising demand. During 2025, aircraft order cancellations totaled $11.09 billion, mainly for 777X, 737, and 787 models, which impacted the revenue potential of the Boeing Commercial Airplanes segment.

Among the underlying components of the S&P 500 index, we saw noteworthy options trading volume today in United Airlines Holdings Inc (Symbol: UAL), where a total of 108,600 contracts have traded so far, representing approximately 10.9 million underlying shares. That amounts to about 159.7% of UAL's average daily trading volume over the past month of 6.8 million shares. Especially high volume was seen for the $105 strike call option expiring April 17, 2026, with 23,986 contracts trading so far today, representing approximately 2.4 million underlying shares of UAL. Boeing Co. Noteworthy Monday Option Activity: UAL, BA, WFC

United Launch Alliance's (ULA) Vulcan rocket has suffered two anomalies in four launches.
The Space Force has decided two is too many and is pausing launches while searching for a fix.
What does it mean for Boeing and Lockheed Martin, the two major investors in the ULA?
United Launch Alliance had high hopes for its new Vulcan Centaur rocket, but they're starting to fall apart -- literally.
As recently as two years ago, United Launch Alliance (ULA), the space launch venture jointly owned by Boeing (NYSE: BA) and Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT), had hoped to be launching anywhere from 20 to 30 Vulcans annually by now. It's actually launched just four times in two years.

Worse, as I described last month, two of the four Vulcans ULA has managed to launch experienced anomalies during flight. Although Vulcan's inaugural launch back in January 2024 went off without a hitch, in October 2024, Launch 2 suffered an anomaly when one of the nozzles that directs exhaust flow from Vulcan's two solid rocket boosters fell off during launch.
Launch 3 then proceeded nominally in 2025, only to be followed by Launch 4 in February 2026 -- which had another problem with its solid rocket boosters. Nothing fell off this time, but the engine exhaust apparently burned through the booster nozzle this time, again endangering the spacecraft.
For ULA, which has reservations for 25 Vulcan launches for the Department of Defense on the books, plus more than three dozen launches for Amazon servicing its Leo satellite constellation, this poses a two-pronged problem.
Problem 1: The U.S. government
It's considered suboptimal when rockets start spontaneously falling apart mid-flight. While ULA has dodged two such bullets, the law of averages could eventually catch up to this rocket company, and the next such anomaly could be disastrous.
To prevent that from happening, U.S. Space Force has decided to hit pause on further Vulcan flights "until this anomaly is solved." As portfolio acquisition executive Col. Eric Zarybnisky explained late last month, "We will not be launching Vulcan missions" until they've solved the solid rocket booster problem.
How long will that take? Well, it won't be quick. While Col. Zarybnisky says he doesn't "have any details" right now, this early in the investigation, he envisions "a many-months process" before Vulcan can fly again. And it's worth noting that it took more than 10 months after the second Vulcan flight (and first Vulcan anomaly) before the rocket flew its third mission.
Problem 2: If the U.S. government doesn't trust ULA, why should Amazon?
The Space Force pausing its use of Vulcan doesn't necessarily mean that other customers cannot launch on the ULA rocket. Amazon in particular, rushing to get its Leo communications satellites into orbit so that it can compete with SpaceX, might be tempted to throw caution to the wind. But it's more likely that commercial customers will follow the Pentagon's lead on this one.
Chances are, no one will be launching on Vulcan until the Space Force gives ULA the green light to resume launching the rocket.
What it means for Boeing and Lockheed stocks
Although owned by two publicly traded space stocks, ULA itself does not directly disclose its revenue and profit numbers. Best guesses from financial data powerhouses such as S&P Global Market Intelligence have ULA generating annual revenue of perhaps $1.5 billion, with 50% going to Lockheed and 50% to Boeing.
What is clear is that if Vulcan gets laid up for "many months" and ULA is left launching only the few Atlas V rockets it still has in inventory for much of 2026, the companies' revenue will take a hit. The good news for Boeing and Lockheed shareholders is that this won't necessarily result in a big hit to their stocks.
Why not? Consider Lockheed specifically, which has a dedicated "Space" business division we can look at (in contrast to Boeing, which groups its space revenue in the same bucket as "defense" and "security"). Last year, Lockheed's space division generated $13.4 billion in revenue and converted almost precisely 10% of that -- $1.345 billion, according to S&P data -- into operating profit.
Assuming ULA contributed only $750 million to Lockheed's "space" revenue, though, that's only about 5.6% of the total. Even if ULA's contributions were cut in half by Vulcan's pause, it would barely scratch the surface of Lockheed's (or Boeing's) overall business.
So is the Vulcan mess bad news for these space stocks? Sure it is.
But it's just a scratch. I'm sure it'll buff right out.

Space Force Makes the Obvious Choice, Halts Rocket Launches at Boeing's and Lockheed's Space Business

Orbital Reef, a joint venture led by Blue Origin and backed by billionaire Jeff Bezos, includes partners Sierra Space, Redwire, Boeing, and others.
Starlab, an even bigger and more international team led by Voyager Technologies (NYSE: VOYG), with help from partners Hilton Worldwide, Janus Henderson Group, Leidos, Northrop Grumman, and Palantir in the U.S. and MDA Space, Airbus, and Mitsubishi internationally.
One of these teams just made a major advance.
Starlab completes its CDR
Earlier this week, Starlab announced that it has "completed its Commercial Critical Design Review (CCDR) with NASA in attendance."
Those last two words are significant. Because this is a commercial CDR, NASA doesn't actually have the authority to accept or reject Starlab's design. It's more of an observer and advisor on a project run by and for the Starlab team -- although NASA hopes to become a Starlab customer once it's in orbit.
These details aside, completing the CCDR marks the 28th milestone toward completing Starlab, says the company. It also likely entitles Starlab to receive a milestone payment from NASA (under the Commercial LEO Destinations Space Act Agreement), as it financially supports Starlab's work.
Plus, with this milestone completed, Starlab is ready to "transition from design to manufacturing and systems integration."
What it means for investors
In its press release, Starlab added that it is now certain that Starlab, a single-unit space station that can be put into orbit with just one launch of a SpaceX Starship, will have "ISS-equivalent payload and crew capabilities" (i.e., it's as big as the space station it's designed to replace).
Investors will also be pleased to hear that Starlab believes it will generate "sustainable, robust revenue" for the companies building it. As the team with the most publicly traded companies participating -- and, thus, the project easiest for us to invest in -- this is important.
The Starlab team did not say when it expects its space station to reach orbit or become operational, however.
At last report, the rival Orbital Reef team had completed only its System Requirements Review (SRR) and System Definition Review (SDR) milestones (the latter in June 2025), requirements that are less advanced than the CCDR, putting Starlab ahead of Orbital Reef in this race.
Starlab appears to be lagging behind Axiom (which admittedly had a big head start), which passed the next step beyond CCDR, the Manufacturing Readiness Review, back in 2021 and is currently building its first station module.
Vast may even be further along, having completed its own Haven-1 module and begun testing it in preparation for a launch later in 2026.
Surprisingly, the two independent teams -- Axiom and Vast -- appear closest to launch at this point. With this week's announcement, though, it's clear Starlab aims to catch up fast.
