The Boeing Company, together with its subsidiaries, designs, develops, manufactures, sells, services, and supports commercial jetliners, military aircraft, satellites, missile defense, human space flight and launch systems, and services worldwide. The company operates through Commercial Airplanes; Defense, Space & Security; and Global Services segments. The Commercial Airplanes segment develops, produces, and markets commercial jet aircraft for passenger and cargo requirements, as well as provides fleet support services. The Defense, Space & Security segment engages in the research, development, production, and modification of manned and unmanned military aircraft and weapons systems; strategic defense and intelligence systems, which include strategic missile and defense systems, command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, cyber and information solutions, and intelligence systems; and satellite systems, such as government and commercial satellites, and space exploration. The Global Services segment offers products and services, including supply chain and logistics management, engineering, maintenance and modifications, upgrades and conversions, spare parts, pilot and maintenance training systems and services, technical and maintenance documents, and data analytics and digital services to commercial and defense customers. The Boeing Company was incorporated in 1916 and is based in Arlington, Virginia.

Boeing still shows a gap between the scale of its business and the quality of its monetization. Revenue remains very large and, overall, stays at a high level, while operating profit and EBITDA in the latest period are positive, supporting the thesis of a recovery after the crisis years. However, profitability remains weak: gross margin, operating margin, and net profit margin are noticeably below industry benchmarks, so each dollar of revenue generates less profit than in more efficient companies in the sector. P/E, P/B, and P/S look expensive relative to the industry median, which means the market is already pricing in a significant improvement, although current profitability does not yet justify such a premium. What is particularly concerning is the high leverage: debt/equity is very high, long-term debt is substantial, and quick ratio and current ratio indicate limited liquidity headroom. At the same time, cash on hand remains significant, and shareholders’ equity is already positive and noticeably better than during the period of negative equity, which reduces the risk of balance-sheet stress compared with the past. Capital quality and returns are still weak: ROE, ROA, ROI, and return on tangible equity are below desirable levels, and some metrics are still near zero or in negative territory. EPS and forecast EPS also look weak, which does not allow for a confident case for aggressive valuation expansion over a one-year horizon. Dividend yield is absent, so investors do not receive additional support through capital distributions. The trend shows improvement compared with the poor periods of 2024, but the recovery is uneven and has not yet translated into sustainably high profitability. For valuation purposes, this means there is upside potential, but it should be restrained because of expensive multiples, heavy debt load, and weak margin indicators. Therefore, the base forecast should be adjusted downward moderately, while still acknowledging the improvement in the operating backdrop, but without overestimating the speed of business normalization.

U.S. stocks fell sharply in midday trading Wednesday as geopolitical tensions reignited and investors positioned ahead of the Federal Reserve's 2:00 p.m. ET policy decision. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI) is down 1.7% at mid-day, led lower by Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT) dropping 7.3% and Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) falling 4.6% on macroeconomic concerns. The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) has shed 1%, while the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC) is down by 1.3%.

All three indexes opened in the red, made a half-hearted attempt at stabilization around 11 a.m. ET, then gave up and slid lower again.
Geopolitical chaos meets central bank uncertainty
The immediate trigger for today's selling? Oil prices rocketing more than 6%.
President Donald Trump told Fox News the U.S. would give Iran "a beating" following an overnight missile attack on American forces. That was the end of last Friday's diplomatic progress. You know the ripple effects that follow when oil prices are on the move. Every company depends on energy in some way, so high oil prices quickly get expensive for retailers, tech giants, and manufacturers.
Then there's the Fed. At 2:00 p.m., Chairman Kevin Warsh will announce the latest policy decision, and futures markets are pricing in a nearly 70% chance that rates stay put in the current 3.5% to 3.75% range. But the real drama will come during Warsh's press conference, where traders will parse every word for hints on whether the Fed is sticking with "higher-for-longer" or if recent oil price swings and stubborn inflation readings are raising fresh concerns.
Semiconductor stocks bore the brunt of the technology sector sell-off. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ: SOXX) plunged 4.4%, extending a 10% weekly decline. Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU) dropped 5.7%, and Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) fell 5.8%. They didn't do anything wrong, other than being richly valued growth stocks on a de-risking kind of market day.
And it's earnings season. Sherwin-Williams (NYSE: SHW) beat analyst estimates and Boeing (NYSE: BA) posted a mixed report. Both stocks fell, erasing a combined 109 points from the Dow.
What's next?
The market drama won't stop here. Two Magnificent 7 companies are reporting earnings tonight, and another two tomorrow. Besides their financials, whatever they say about data center plans and AI investments will surely move the markets for the rest of this week.

Market Indexes Tumble on Geopolitical Tensions and Chip Stock Selloff

The Dow and the S&P 500 ended higher on Tuesday, driven by robust earnings and a decline in energy prices, as investors continued to dump chip stocks and take refuge in other defensive assets. The Nasdaq ended in negative territory.
How Did the Benchmarks Perform?
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) jumped 1%, or 537.24 points, to close at 52,747.32 points.
The S&P 500 rose 0.2%, to finish at 7,428.78 points. Health care, communication services, and consumer staples stocks were the biggest gainers, while energy and tech stocks were the worst performers.
The Information Technology Select Sector SPDR (XLK) lost 1.8%, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) dropped 1.4%. The Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) gained 2.4%. The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) added 2%, while the Communication Services Select Sector SPDR (XLC) rose 1.9%. Seven of the 11 sectors of the benchmark index ended in positive territory.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq declined 0.2%, to end at 24,876.91 points.
The fear gauge, the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), was down 2.46% to 18.21. Advancers outnumbered decliners on the S&P 500 by a 2.5-to-1 ratio. A total of 17.2 billion shares were traded on Tuesday, lower than the last 20-session average of 17.4 billion.
On the S&P 500, there were 63 new 52-week highs and one new low.
Robust Earnings Boost Markets, Chip Selloff Continues
The S&P 500 rallied on Tuesday, boosted by gains in The Boeing Company (BA) and The Coca-Cola Company (KO) after the companies reported their quarterly results. Shares of Boeing jumped 4.8% despite the company reporting a wider-than-expected loss in the second quarter of 2026.
Boeing reported a quarterly loss of $0.76 per share, wider than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of $0.34. However, it posted revenues of $24.56 billion, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 2.11%.
The Coca-Cola Company reported second-quarter 2026 earnings of $0.97 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $0.92 per share. The company’s shares ended up 5%.
Dow, which posted its third straight day of gains, got a boost from The Sherwin-Williams Company (SHW). The company’s shares jumped 8.3% after it reported second-quarter 2026 earnings of $3.7 per share, outpacing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $3.56 per share. The earnings season is fast gathering pace, and robust quarterly results from some of the industry bellwethers somewhat offset the bleeding chip stocks. Investors are concerned that companies like Microsoft Corporation (MSFT), Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) and Alphabet, Inc. (GOOGL) are investing too much in AI data centers, which could be a risky affair.
Chip stocks continued to suffer on Tuesday, with the PHLX Semiconductor (SOX) declining 4.5%. Investors are now waiting to see the quarterly guidance from tech giants Microsoft, Amazon, Apple, Inc. (AAPL) and Meta Platforms Inc. (META), which will report their quarterly results this week.
Declining oil prices also helped markets, as Iran started talks with Oman and Saudi Arabia regarding the Strait of Hormuz. West Texas Intermediate crude futures dropped nearly 4% to end at $79.26 a barrel. International Brent crude settled at $84.09, declining 4.8%.
Economic Data
The Conference Board reported on Tuesday that consumer confidence fell to 90.8 in July from an upwardly revised 92.2 in the prior month. The reading came sharply lower than the consensus estimate of a rise to 92.3.

Stock Market News for July 29, 2026

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Tuesday closed up +0.21%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) closed up +1.03%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed down -0.98%. September E-mini S&P futures (ESU26) rose +0.24%, and September E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQU26) fell -0.88%.
Stock indexes settled mixed on Tuesday, with the Dow Jones Industrials climbing to a 1.5-week high and the Nasdaq 100 falling to a 2.75-month low. Better-than-expected earnings from Boeing, Coca-Cola and Sherwin-Williams were supportive of stocks on Tuesday. Also, software stocks rose as investors rotated into sectors that had recently underperformed.

However, the Nasdaq 100 was under pressure amid a deepening rout in chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks, driven by fresh concerns over artificial intelligence spending and rising competition from China. Also, the unexpected decline in US July consumer confidence weighed on market sentiment on Tuesday.
Lower crude oil prices have also eased inflation concerns and pushed bond yields lower, supporting stocks. Sep WTI crude oil prices (CLU26) fell by more than -4% on Tuesday to a 1-week low, as the US and Iran extended their pause in hostilities. The focus is now on talks between Iran and Oman over reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The 10-year T-note yield fell -5 bp to 4.60%.
However, tensions remain high in the Middle East as the US maintains its blockade of Iranian oil shipments in the Persian Gulf. Also, President Trump on Tuesday said that the US would “take out” Pickaxe Mountain, an Iranian facility that the US and Israel said they suspect is a nuclear site, if there wasn’t a deal. In addition, Houthi militants said they would continue striking Saudi Arabia after claiming to have struck facilities linked to Saudi Aramco in the Red Sea port towns of Jizan and Yanbu on Saturday. Yanbu, the western end of the East-West pipeline, has become Saudi Arabia’s key crude export outlet since the Strait of Hormuz has been effectively shut off by the war.
The US May S&P composite-20 home price index rose +1.6% y/y, stronger than expectations of +1.3% y/y and the largest increase in 10 months.
The Conference Board US Jul consumer confidence index unexpectedly fell by -1.4 to 90.8, weaker than expectations of an increase to 92.4.
The US Jul Richmond Fed manufacturing survey rose +1 to 5, weaker than expectations of 6.
The outlook for strong Q2 earnings, which continue this week, is a bullish factor for stocks. The markets are awaiting results from a raft of megacap technology companies this week, including Microsoft and Meta Platforms on Wednesday, and Amazon.com and Apple on Thursday. Forecasts compiled by Bloomberg Intelligence suggest Q2 earnings may increase by +23%, close to Q1’s blowout earnings of +30%, which was more than double the +12% analysts had expected. AI spending is expected to account for most of earnings, with AI infrastructure stocks set to contribute nearly 60% of the S&P 500's earnings-per-share growth in Q2. So far, earnings results have been positive, with 86% of the 170 S&P 500 companies that have reported Q2 earnings beating estimates, according to Bloomberg data.
The markets are discounting a 30% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the Tue/Wed FOMC meeting.
Overseas stock markets settled mixed on Tuesday. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed up +0.12%. China's Shanghai Composite closed down -1.16%. Japan's Nikkei-225 Stock Average fell to a 2-month low and closed down sharply by -3.95%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU6) on Tuesday closed up +7.5 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield fell -4.9 bp to 4.600%. T-notes pushed higher on Tuesday as a -4% plunge in crude oil prices eased inflation expectations. The 10-year breakeven inflation rate fell to a 1-month low of 2.192% on Tuesday. T-notes also rose after US July consumer confidence unexpectedly declined. Solid demand for the Treasury’s $44 billion auction of 7-year T-notes was bullish for T-note prices, as the auction had a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.49, better than the 10-auction average of 2.47.
European government bond yields moved lower on Tuesday. The 10-year German bund yield fell to a 2-week low of 3.103% and finished down -2.9 bp to 3.104%. The 10-year UK gilt yield slid to a 1-week low of 4.944% and finished down -5.2 bp to 4.944%.
The France Jul consumer confidence survey rose +2 to a 4-month high of 86, stronger than expectations of 85.
The markets are discounting an 86% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on September 10.
US Stock Movers
Software stocks rallied on Tuesday, a supportive factor for the overall market. Workday (WDAY) closed up more than +8% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100, and Thomson Reuters (TRI) and Autodesk (ADSK) closed up more than +5%. Also, Adobe (ADBE), ServiceNow (NOW), Salesforce (CRM), and Atlassian (TEAM) closed up more than +4%, and Intuit (INTU) closed up more than +3%. In addition, Microsoft (MSFT) and Cadence Design Systems (CDNS) closed up more than +1%.
Chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks retreated on Tuesday, weighing on the Nasdaq 100. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) dropped to a 2.5-month low and closed down more than -4%. Sandisk (SNDK) closed down more than -14% to lead losers in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100, and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), ARM Holdings Plc (ARM), Micron Technology (MU) and Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX) closed down more than -8%. Also, Applied Materials (AMAT), Marvell Technology (MRVL), and Lam Research (LRCX) closed down more than -7%, and KLA Corp (KLAC) and Western Digital (WDC) closed down more than -6%. In addition, Intel (INTC) closed down more than -5%, and Qualcomm (QCOM) closed down more than -4%.
Cryptocurrency-exposed stocks moved lower on Tuesday after Bitcoin (^BTCUSD) fell more than -1% to a 1-week low. Galaxy Digital Holdings (GLXY) closed down more than -9%, and MARA Holdings (MARA) closed down more than -4%. Also, Strategy (MSTR), Riot Platforms (RIOT), and Circle Internet Group (CRCL) closed down more than -2%, and Coinbase Global (COIN) closed down -0.39%.
IQVIA Holdings (IQV) closed up more than +13% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after boosting its full-year revenue forecast to $17.28 billion to $17.48 billion from a previous forecast of $17.15 billion to $17.35 billion, stronger than the consensus of $17.28 billion.
Sherwin-Williams (SHW) closed up more than +8% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials after reporting adjusted EPS of $3.70, better than the consensus of $3.51, and raising its full-year adjusted EPS forecast to $11.80 to $12.20 from a previous forecast of $11.50 to $11.90, above the consensus of $11.76.
Nucor (NUE) closed up more than +7% after reporting Q2 net sales of $10.40 billion, above the consensus of $10.03 billion.
Coca-Cola (KO) closed up +5% after raising its full-year comparable EPS forecast to +9% to +10% from a previous view of +8% to +9%.
Boeing (BA) closed up more than +4% after reporting Q2 revenue of $24.56 billion, stronger than the consensus of $24.26 billion.
Amkor Technology (AMKR) closed down more than -24% after forecasting Q3 net sales of $1.95 billion to $2.05 billion, weaker than the consensus of $2.11 billion.
Corning (GLW) closed down more than -12% after forecasting Q3 core sales of $4.9 billion to $5.0 billion, the midpoint below the consensus of $5.0 billion.
Noble Corp. (NE) closed down more than -9% after cutting its full-year adjusted Ebitda estimate to $850 million to $925 million from a previous forecast of $940 million to $1.02 billion, below the consensus of $970.3 million.
Carrier Global (CARR) closed down more than -8% after reporting Q2 gross margin of 27.2%, below the consensus of 28.1%.
RXO Inc (RXO) closed down more than -6% after TD Cowen downgraded the stock to sell from hold with a price target of $19.

Stocks Settle Mostly Higher on Positive Earnings Results

Pre-market futures are mixed at this hour, continuing Monday’s trading narrative of rotating out of the tech-heavy Nasdaq and into the blue-chip Dow. The Dow, with strong Q2 results from Coke and elsewhere, is up +413 points at present; the Nasdaq — with microchips once again bring sold — is -270 points. The S&P 500 splits the difference: -7 points, while the small-cap Russell 2000 is +2 points currently.
A third-straight quiet day in Iran may be fostering some goodwill toward reconnection for a peace agreement. (Then again, it may not.) Oil prices have definitely cooled since late last week: $81 per barrel (/bbl) on WTI and $87/bbl on Brent, as sentiment gain tacks toward a peaceful resolution. Bond yields have also settled down somewhat: +4.63% on the 10-year T-bill and +4.30% on the 2-year.
The Fed Starts 2-Day Meeting Today
Today is the first day of the fifth Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting of 2026 so far (of eight total meetings per year), and the last until mid-September. Rates have not moved since December’s quarter-point cut to a range of +3.50-3.75%, and they are not expected to go anywhere today, either.
Monthly inflation reports have depicted stubborn high costs that are not presently spiraling out of control. This suggests that, while odds now favor a rate hike for the next move at the FOMC, they likely won’t be in any rush to do so. That said, we have seen PCE inflation increase by 30 basis points (bps) or higher month over month since March, reaching +4.1% in June. CPI for June, on the other hand, saw a big drop to +3.5% in its latest report. Most likely, the Fed stays in “wait and see” mode.
Trade Balance, Inventories Come in Slightly Lighter
Headline U.S. Trade Balance for June was slightly deeper than estimates but improved month over month: -$101.5 billion from a revised improvement to -$105 billion in May. That print was still the deepest deficit since the all-time record -$159 billion in March of 2025, which directly preceded “Liberation Day” tariffs, which lasted one week at the start of April.
Advanced Retail Inventories fell back to 0.0% from +0.4% projected, and from the downwardly revised +0.5% for the previous month. This is the lowest since the flat read back in February of this year. Preliminary Wholesale Inventories matched the prior month’s +0.3%, 10 bps lower than expected. More relatively modest prints on the economy, writ-large. More reasons for the Fed to hold its cards today too.
Q2 Roundup: BA, KO & More

Shares are helping boost the Dow this morning, +1.3%.
Coca-Cola (KO) reported earnings that beat consensus by a solid nickel: +$0.97 per share versus $0.92 estimated. Revenues of $13.37 billion easily surpassed expectations by +2.44%. Shares are up +4% in pre-market trading, also assisting the blue-chip index, and adding to the +20% gains in the shares year to date.
UPS (UPS) made easy work of its Q2 results this morning, posting a +6.67% positive surprise with earnings of $1.76 per share on $22.83 billion in revenues, which beat estimates by nearly +5%. Shares are flagging after a move higher immediately following the Q2 news; shares had been +7.8% over the past month.
Sherwin-Williams (SHW) posted strong results for its Q2 report ahead of today’s open, with earnings of $3.70 per share nicely above the $3.56 in the Zacks consensus (and $3.38 per share a year ago). Revenues of $6.79 billion outperformed forecasts by +2.58%, and well higher than the $6.31 billion from a year ago. The paints and coatings giant raised guidance above earlier estimates, and shares are trading +7% higher ahead of the bell.

Q2 Earnings Season Gathers Steam

Tuesday, July 28th, 2026
Pre-market futures are mixed at this hour, continuing Monday’s trading narrative of rotating out of the tech-heavy Nasdaq and into the blue-chip Dow. The Dow, with strong Q2 results from Coke and elsewhere, is up +413 points at present; the Nasdaq — with microchips once again bring sold — is -270 points. The S&P 500 splits the difference: -7 points, while the small-cap Russell 2000 is +2 points currently.
A third-straight quiet day in Iran may be fostering some goodwill toward reconnection for a peace agreement. (Then again, it may not.) Oil prices have definitely cooled since late last week: $81 per barrel (/bbl) on WTI and $87/bbl on Brent, as sentiment gain tacks toward a peaceful resolution. Bond yields have also settled down somewhat: +4.63% on the 10-year T-bill and +4.30% on the 2-year.
The Fed Starts 2-Day Meeting Today
Today is the first day of the fifth Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting of 2026 so far (of eight total meetings per year), and the last until mid-September. Rates have not moved since December’s quarter-point cut to a range of +3.50-3.75%, and they are not expected to go anywhere today, either.
Monthly inflation reports have depicted stubborn high costs that are not presently spiraling out of control. This suggests that, while odds now favor a rate hike for the next move at the FOMC, they likely won’t be in any rush to do so. That said, we have seen PCE inflation increase by 30 basis points (bps) or higher month over month since March, reaching +4.1% in June. CPI for June, on the other hand, saw a big drop to +3.5% in its latest report. Most likely, the Fed stays in “wait and see” mode.
Trade Balance, Inventories Come in Slightly Lighter
Headline U.S. Trade Balance for June was slightly deeper than estimates but improved month over month: -$101.5 billion from a revised improvement to -$105 billion in May. That print was still the deepest deficit since the all-time record -$159 billion in March of 2025, which directly preceded “Liberation Day” tariffs, which lasted one week at the start of April.
Advanced Retail Inventories fell back to 0.0% from +0.4% projected, and from the downwardly revised +0.5% for the previous month. This is the lowest since the flat read back in February of this year. Preliminary Wholesale Inventories matched the prior month’s +0.3%, 10 bps lower than expected. More relatively modest prints on the economy, writ-large. More reasons for the Fed to hold its cards today too.

Boeing (BA) reported $24.56 billion in revenue for the quarter ended June 2026, representing a year-over-year increase of 8%. EPS of -$0.76 for the same period compares to -$1.24 a year ago.
The reported revenue compares to the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $24.05 billion, representing a surprise of +2.11%. The company delivered an EPS surprise of -123.53%, with the consensus EPS estimate being -$0.34.
While investors closely watch year-over-year changes in headline numbers -- revenue and earnings -- and how they compare to Wall Street expectations to determine their next course of action, some key metrics always provide a better insight into a company's underlying performance.

Compared to Estimates, Boeing (BA) Q2 Earnings: A Look at Key Metrics

(RTTNews) - Boeing Co. (BA) reported on Tuesday that net loss attributable to Boeing common shareholders for the second quarter narrowed to $530 million or $0.67 per share from $697 million or $0.92 per share in the prior-year quarter.
Excluding items, core loss for the quarter were $0.76 per share, compared to a core loss of $1.24 per share in the year-ago quarter.
Total revenues for the quarter grew 8 percent to $24.56 billion from $22.75 billion in the same quarter last year.
Commercial Airplanes delivered 171 airplanes during the quarter, compared to 150 airplanes in the same quarter last year. Backlog included over 6,200 airplanes valued at a record $715 billion.
Commercial Airplanes booked 246 net orders in the quarter, including orders from Korean Air, Delta Air Lines, and SMBC Capital.
In Tuesday's pre-market trading, BA is trading on the NYSE at $214.34, up $2.91 or 1.38 percent.

Pre-Market Earnings Report for July 28, 2026 : KO, BA, SPGI, GLW, UPS, ITW, RCL, SHW, AMT, ECL, HLT, PCAR

Pre-market futures are in the red this morning, following a Monday trading session that saw major indexes move up roughly have a percentage point. At this hour, the Dow is down -226 points, -0.47%, the S&P 500 is -37 points, -0.56%, the Nasdaq -181 points, -0.75% and the small-cap Russell 2000 -19, -0.78%.
Durable Goods Orders Mixed-to-Lower in February
Preliminary Durable Goods Orders for the month of February (delayed — final results due in a couple weeks) came in lower than expected on headline, with spots of better news “beneath the fold.” Today’s -1.4% is the weakest month of Durable Goods Orders since October of last year, and 30 basis points (bps) lower than expectations. The prior month’s originally reported 0.0% ratchets down to -0.5%.
Stripping out Transportation costs, we see this figure more than double month over month to +0.8%, from a downwardly revised +0.3% in January. This is the strongest print since December of 2025. Non-defense, ex-aircraft — a proxy for “normal” business spending (computers, office space, cybersecurity, etc.) — came in better than expected at +0.6%. That said, the prior month’s “normal” business spending dropped notable to -0.4% from +0.8% originally reported.
Shipments also posted their strongest month since December: +0.9%. Of course, we’re looking in the rearview mirror here, and until we see March figures we won’t even be scratching the surface on durable goods orders that reflects realities of spiking oil prices due to the Iran war.
What to Expect from the Market Today
All eyes are on this latest deadline ultimatum from President Trump, who has given Iran until this evening to open the Strait of Hormuz — where 20% of daily global oil is transported — or be subjected to massive bombing of Iranian infrastructure ("A whole civilization will die tonight..." begins Trump's latest social media post). Should the Strait suddenly open up today, we can expect a big rally and a drop in oil prices. Should the fresh wave of bombing ensue, we’re likely to see oil prices move quite the other direction.
At this stage, WTI spot prices are up +2.4% to around $115 per barrel (/bbl), while Brent remains trailing somewhat at $110/bbl (+0.7%). Extended attacks on Iranian bridges and water desalination plants will likely bring counter-bombing to energy infrastructures in neighboring Middle Eastern countries by Iran. This would likely make the closure of the Strait of Hormuz slightly less relevant — if there is less energy to collect from the region, they won’t need to ship as much, anyway.
So markets are hedging slightly to the downside on this prospect. With earnings reports on deck for next week and beyond, what happens tonight in Iran will be greatly informative toward corporate projections toward future earnings. We’ve already seen oil prices double from the start of the year; prolonged aggravation of global oil supply and delivery will eventually find its way into virtually every company’s forward balance sheet.
