However, 2026 could be the year of the quantum reality check. Investors may be better off focusing less on up-and-coming quantum computing stocks like Rigetti and instead placing their bets on quantum veterans with real cash flow, such as IBM (NYSE: IBM).
Rigetti's real promise – and real risks
Don't get me wrong. I believe that quantum computing is as exciting as advertised. It holds the potential to accelerate artificial intelligence (AI) advances, transform drug discovery, and revolutionize multiple areas, including materials science, logistics, and weather forecasting.
I also believe that Rigetti Computing's quantum technology shows real promise. The company's focus on superconducting quantum computing is pragmatic. Its Cepheus-1-108Q system, which supports 108 qubits, is poised to be the largest modular quantum computing system upon its general availability at the end of the first quarter of 2026.
Rigetti's manufacturing capabilities also give it an edge. The company built the first dedicated foundry for the fabrication of quantum integrated circuits. Rigetti makes a compelling argument that its design and fabrication are best-in-class.
However, Rigetti's risks are also real. The company continues to lose money. Its revenue in the latest reported quarter was a meager $1.9 million. Perhaps most importantly, Rigetti is competing with formidable rivals, several of whom are also using the superconducting approach to build quantum computers.
Big Blue has big plans – and big money
IBM is one of Rigetti's formidable rivals. Its quantum computing business has more than 300 clients and partners, including Boeing (NYSE: BA), Cleveland Clinic, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC).
The tech pioneer developed Qiskit, the world's most widely used open-source software stack for quantum computing. While Rigetti pushed back the launch of its 108-qubit Cepheus-1-108Q system, IBM has already released its Quantum Nighthawk QPU that supports 120 qubits.
2026 will be the year that quantum advantage (which IBM defines as where a quantum computer can solve a practical problem "more accurately, cheaply, or efficiently than a classical computer") is achieved, according to Jay Gambetta, Director of IBM Research. IBM also has an ambitious roadmap over the next few years. The company plans to build a fault-tolerant 200-qubit quantum computer by 2029. Beyond 2033, IBM believes it will have powerful systems that support up to 2,000 qubits.
Notably, IBM has the money to fund its quantum computing goals. The company's revenue is growing across all business segments. It's highly profitable. IBM expects to report free cash flow of around $14 billion for the full year 2025. At the end of the third quarter of 2025, the tech giant's cash position stood at $14.9 billion.
The smart money's quantum computing pick
Rigetti Computing could be a huge winner over the long term. However, the company's fortunes and future hinge on its quantum computing technology proving at least as good as its competitors'. There's no guarantee that will happen.
While IBM is investing heavily in quantum computing, it can still be successful even if the quantum bet doesn't pay off as hoped. The company, which got its start making tabulating machines, has done a good job of adapting to the rise of AI.
The race to fulfill the potential of quantum computing will be a marathon, not a sprint. IBM is much better positioned to go the full distance than Rigetti is. That's why when the choice is between these two stocks, IBM is the smart money's quantum computing pick.

Forget Rigetti Computing: This Quantum Veteran With Real Cash Flow Is the Smarter Long‑Term Bet

In early trading on Wednesday, shares of UnitedHealth Group topped the list of the day's best performing Dow Jones Industrial Average components, trading up 2.5%. Year to date, UnitedHealth Group has lost about 12.2% of its value.
And the worst performing Dow component thus far on the day is Boeing, trading down 2.8%. Boeing is showing a gain of 9.5% looking at the year to date performance.
Two other components making moves today are Apple, trading down 0.8%, and NVIDIA, trading up 1.7% on the day.

General Dynamics Corporation GD reported fourth-quarter 2025 earnings per share (EPS) of $4.17, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $4.11 by 1.5%. The bottom line also increased 0.5% from $4.15 recorded in the year-ago quarter.
The year-over-year bottom-line appreciation can be attributed to revenue growth as well as an improvement in operating earnings.
For 2025, the company reported EPS of $15.45, up 13.4% from the year-ago reported figure of $13.63. The full-year bottom line also surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $15.39.
Total Revenues of GD
Revenues of $14.38 billion beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $13.80 billion by 4.2%. The top line also improved 7.8% from the prior-year figure of $13.34 billion.
In the fourth quarter, the Marine Systems segment remained GD’s largest revenue contributor, accounting for 33.5% of total sales.
For 2025, the company reported revenues worth $52.55 billion, up 10.1% from the year-ago reported figure of $47.72 billion. The full-year top line also beat the consensus estimate of $51.96 billion.

Combat Systems: The segmental top line of $2.54 billion improved 5.8% from the year-ago quarter’s level. Operating earnings improved 7% year over year to $381 million.
Technologies: Revenues from this segment declined 0.1% year over year to $3.24 billion. Operating earnings totaled $290 million, which declined 9.1% year over year.

Operating earnings totaled $1.45 billion, up 2% from the year-ago quarter’s $1.42 billion.
Operating costs and expenses increased 8.5% year over year to $12.93 billion.
Interest expenses decreased 17.1% year over year to $63 million.

General Dynamics recorded a total backlog of $178.94 billion. This includes a backlog of $118.05 billion and estimated potential contract value, representing management’s estimate of additional value in unfunded indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contracts and unexercised options of $60.89 billion.

As of Dec. 31, 2025, cash and cash equivalents totaled $2.33 billion compared with $1.70 billion as of Dec. 31, 2024.

Strong Marine Systems Performance Drives GD's Q4 Earnings and Revenues

Textron Inc. TXT reported fourth-quarter 2025 adjusted earnings of $1.73 per share, which missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.74 by 0.8%. However, the bottom line rose 29.1% from $1.34 in the year-ago quarter.
The company reported GAAP earnings of $1.33 per share compared with 76 cents a year ago.
For 2025, the company reported adjusted earnings of $6.10 per share compared with $5.48 a year ago.
TXT’s Revenues
The company reported total revenues of $4.18 billion, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $4.14 billion by 0.8%. The top line also increased 15.7% from the year-ago quarter’s level of $3.61 billion.
For 2025, the company reported revenues of $14.8 billion compared with $13.7 billion last year.

Textron Aviation: Revenues from this segment increased 36% year over year to $1.7 billion. This was primarily due to higher volume and mix largely reflecting higher Citation jet and commercial turboprop volume as TXT recovered from the strike in late 2024.
The segment delivered 49 jets, up from 32 in the year-ago quarter. It also delivered 43 commercial turboprops, up from 38 in the third quarter of 2024.
Order backlog at the end of the quarter totaled $7.7 billion.
Bell: Revenues from this segment amounted to $1.3 billion, up 11% from the year-ago quarter’s registered number. This was due to higher volume on the U.S. Army's MV-75 program, partially offset by lower commercial revenues of $11 million, reflecting the mix of aircraft sold in the period, partially offset by higher pricing.
Bell delivered 78 commercial helicopters, flat year over year.
Its order backlog at the end of the quarter totaled $7.8 billion.
Textron Systems: This segment’s revenues amounted to $323 million, up $12 million from the prior-year level.
Textron Systems’ backlog at the end of the quarter totaled $3.3 billion.
Industrial: Revenues from this segment declined $48 million to $821 million due to the impact of the divestiture of the Powersports business.
Textron eAviation: Revenues from the segment totaled $7 million, lower than the prior-year period’s level of $11 million.
Finance: This segment’s revenues amounted to $18 million compared with $11 million in the year-ago quarter.

Artemis is a long-term NASA program, so it seems likely that some companies involved will benefit for some time.
Artemis contracts could move the needle more on smaller companies’ financials than on those of the massive prime contractors.
NASA's Artemis II mission has been in the news a lot recently. That's because on Saturday, Jan. 17, the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and Orion spacecraft were moved to Launch Pad 39B from the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Before we get into the topic of stocks that could benefit from Artemis, it should be helpful for investors to understand the program.

About the Artemis program
The move of the SLS and Orion to a launch pad was in preparation for Artemis II's approximately 10-day crewed flight test around the moon. The earliest launch window for the 4-crew mission opens on Friday, Feb. 6, at 9:41 p.m. ET and lasts for two hours.
Artemis II is one key step in NASA's Artemis program, whose ultimate goals are to once again land humans on the moon, establish a sustained human presence there, and ultimately explore Mars. It's been over 50 years since Americans landed on the moon during the Apollo program, which ended in 1972. Artemis is aptly named for Apollo's twin sister in ancient Greek mythology.
Artemis III "will send the first humans to explore the region near the lunar South Pole," and Artemis IV "debuts humanity's first lunar space station [called Gateway], a larger, more powerful version of the SLS rocket, and new mobile launcher," according to NASA. Artemis IV could occur as soon as September 2028. Then it seems likely either more key steps will occur or another program will follow whose goals are related to Mars.
Given that Artemis is a long-term program, it seems likely that some stocks will benefit from this program. But which stocks?
I'm going to address under-the-radar stocks rather than major aerospace and defense contractors. It's well known which huge companies are involved in Artemis. (Prime contractors and well-known key partners include -- but are not limited to -- Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, L3Harrris Technologies, Airbus, Amentum, Elon Musk's SpaceX, and Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin.) Moreover, Artemis contracts could move the needle more for smaller companies' financials than for those of large companies.

Karman Holdings: A relatively new public company
Karman Holdings held its initial public offering (IPO) in February 2025. Because it's such a newly public company, it probably flies under the radar (pardon the pun) of many investors.
Karman was founded in early 2021 through a partnership between AMRO Fabricating, a leading manufacturer of large, lightweight metallic structures serving the aerospace and defense industries; Trive Capital, a Dallas-based private equity firm with investment expertise in the space and defense sectors; Aerospace Engineering Corp.; and AAE Aerospace. At that time, Karman was "focused on manufacturing complex systems for the space, missile, interceptor, and hypersonic markets."
Karman has made a handful of acquisitions over the last year. Its most recent acquisition occurred earlier this month, when it bought Seemann Composites LLC, including its subsidiary, Materials Sciences. This $220 million acquisition ($210 million in cash and $10 million in Karman stock) expands Karman's operations into the maritime defense market, a high priority for the U.S. Department of Defense.
As for Artemis, Karman "provides machining and welding services for multiple Artemis elements, including the primary structures for the SLS core stage, the Orion crew module, the launch abort system, and the forward skirt for future SLS solid rocket boosters," according to NASA.
Karman stock is only suitable for risk-tolerant investors. Along with the stock's valuation being very high (see forward P/E in the chart), Karman doesn't have much history as a publicly traded company. So, investors don't have a lot of key data on which to base their investment decisions.
MDA Space: A mid-cap Canadian company that's profitable
MDA Space is another stock that probably isn't well known, at least among U.S. investors. The company was founded in 1969 and held its IPO in 2021. It is based in Ontario, Canada, and its stock is listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange. MDA Space is Canada's biggest space company.
Most U.S. investors should stick to stocks traded on a major U.S. exchange, as foreign stocks traded only over the counter (OTC) in the U.S. pose additional risks, including low liquidity and currency translation.
That said, for very experienced investors, MDA Space looks promising. The company is profitable, experiencing strong growth, and has a huge backlog.
MDA is heavily involved in the Artemis program, primarily by supplying advanced robotics systems for the construction of moon infrastructure and exploration. Specifically, it is involved in developing the artificial intelligence (AI)-powered "Canadarm3" for the Gateway lunar space station and designing a robotic arm and interfaces for the new Lunar Terrain Vehicle (LTV). It also has other Artemis-related contracts. (If you're wondering which company's or companies' AI tech is being used for Canadarm3, I was, too. I'm trying to track down if Nvidia's AI chips are being used, as I suspect.)
Graham Corp.: A profitable long-established small-cap company
Graham Corp. is headquartered in Batavia, New York, and went public in 1968, though its roots date back to 1936. It designs and manufactures critical fluid, power, heat transfer, and vacuum systems for the defense, aerospace, energy, and process industries.
Graham's Barber-Nichols subsidiary, based in the Denver area, is working with Axiom Space to supply critical life-support components (oxygen fans and thermal loop pumps) for the AxEMU, a new spacesuit designed for the Artemis III mission.
The company is seeing a "meaningful momentum" across its businesses. In November, on its second-quarter fiscal 2026earnings call CEO Matt Malone said: "In the second quarter and first month of our fiscal 2026 third quarter, our Barber-Nichols subsidiary booked a series of new orders from six industry-leading customers in the commercial space launch market. These awards were for advanced turbomachinery and precision-engineered components supporting next-generation commercial launch in in-space systems and totaled $22 million."
Moreover, the energy end market is also doing well. Malone stated that the company is "seeing meaningful momentum in small modular nuclear reactors and cryogenic applications." Graham is involved in both the conventional and clean or renewable energy markets.
On the call, management said that the company closed the quarter with a book-to-bill ratio of 1.3x and drove backlog to a record $500.1 million, up 23% year over year. For context, the company's revenue was $66 million in the quarter, up 23% year over year. A book-to-bill ratio over 1.0 is usually a sign of growing demand for a company's products.

Noteworthy Tuesday Option Activity: UNH, BA, GFS

The Boeing Company BA incurred an adjusted loss of $1.91 per share in the fourth quarter of 2025, wider than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of 40 cents. However, the bottom line improved from the year-ago quarter’s reported loss of $5.90 per share.
For 2025, the company reported adjusted earnings of $1.19 per share against the loss of $20.38 per share in the previous year.
BA’s Total Revenues
Revenues amounted to $23.95 billion, which outpaced the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $21.73 billion by 8%. The top line also surged 57.1% from the year-ago quarter’s reported figure of $15.24 billion.
For 2025, the company reported revenues of $89.46 billion compared with $66.52 billion in the previous year.

During the quarter under review, Boeing delivered 160 commercial planes. The figure improved 181% year over year.
Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS): The segment recorded revenues of $7.42 billion, indicating year-over-year growth of 37%. It generated an operating loss of $0.51 billion compared with the year-ago quarter’s operating loss of $2.27 billion.
Global Services: The segment recorded revenues of $5.21 billion, indicating year-over-year growth of 2%. This unit generated an operating income of $10.54 billion compared with the year-ago quarter’s figure of $0.998 billion.
BA’s Financial Condition
Boeing exited fourth-quarter 2025 with cash and cash equivalents of $10.92 billion and short-term and other investments of $18.48 billion. At the end of 2024, the company had cash and cash equivalents of $13.80 billion and short-term and other investments worth $12.48 billion.
Long-term debt amounted to $45.64 billion, down from $52.59 billion recorded at the end of 2024.
The company’s net cash provided by operating activities at the end of 2025 was $1.07 billion against cash used of $12.08 billion at the end of 2024.

Boeing (BA) Q4 2025 Earnings Call Transcript

We have a big earnings morning to report. Rather than launch into any pithy pontification about the trajectory of the stock market, let’s allow the numbers to speak for themselves, shall we?
Boeing BA posted a noisy Q4 report ahead of today’s open, with a big beat showing on the bottom line, but when subtracting the one-time item Digital Aviation Solutions sale to Thoma Bravo for $10.55 billion, the aircraft builder posted a loss of -$1.91 per share versus expectations of -$0.40. Revenues in the quarter — presumably including this massive sale in the quarter — are up +57% year over year to $23.95 billion. Beleaguered health insurer UnitedHealth UNH put up mixed results for its Q4 report this morning, beating estimates by 2 cents to $2.11 per share on the bottom line, with $113.22 billion coming in -0.04% on the top. Capping healthcare costs — as per President Trump’s missive — throw shade on the company’s immediate future. Shares are -15% at this hour in today’s pre-market, helping the Dow underperform the other major indexes. For more on UNH’s earnings, click here.
General Motors GM sharers are up +4% at this hour, with earnings of $2.51 per share outpacing the Zacks consensus by +14% on quarterly revenues of $45.29 billion, -1.83%. But the future apparently looks bright for the top American carmaker, as the company has decided to increase its dividend by +20%. For more on GM’s earnings, click here.
United Parcel Service UPS posted beats on both top and bottom lines this morning, with earnings of $2.38 per share on $24.48 billion representing positive surprises of +7.2% and +1.95%, respectively. Shares were up on the news initially, but are now trading modestly down. UPS stock is +7% so far from the start of 2026.
What to Expect After the Market Opens
January Consumer Confidence is expected to hit the tape a half-hour after the opening bell rings. An expected print of 90 would be slightly above the 89.1 reported a month ago, but still below the 100 points or so we’d been enjoying for much of the past four years. The November government shutdown is now somewhat in the past; the consumer is likely feeling strain from a delicate labor market and erratic policy shifts on a domestic and global scale.
After today’s close, Zacks Rank #2 (Buy)-rated Texas Instruments TXN reports earnings for Q4. Expectations are for flat earnings growth year over year, but +10.7% on revenues from a year ago. The chipmaker is riding a streak of eight-straight quarterly earnings beats, and the company’s stock is already +13% from the start of this year.
