Mastercard (NYSE:MA) is set to report its second quarter earnings on Thursday, July 31, 2025. Earnings are expected to come in at about $4.02 per share, up almost 11% compared to last year, per consensus estimates, while revenues are projected to grow 14% to $7.95 billion. Growth is likely to be driven by strength in the cross-border transaction volume as well as value-added services. Value added services such as security and fraud protection and digital solutions are also likely to continue to witness strong growth. That said, investors will focus more on Mastercard’s outlook. The largest financial company in the world is Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK.A)(NYSE: BRK.B), with a market cap of more than $1 trillion. Many investors don't realize it, but Berkshire is technically an insurance company at heart -- Warren Buffett built its empire using insurance float from subsidiaries like GEICO and others.

So, as of this writing, Bank of America is the fifth largest financial sector company by market cap and the second largest bank stock. It's likely it will stay this way for at least a little while, as there's a wide gap between Bank of America and the No. 4 (Visa) as well as with the No. 6, fellow big bank Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC), which has a $260 billion market cap.
How it's going
Bank of America, and most other large bank stocks for that matter, just reported second-quarter results. In general, the numbers looked strong, and here are some key highlights:
Revenue and EPS grew by 4% and 7% year over year, respectively.
Customer deposits grew 5% to $2 trillion. Bank of America has the No. 1 retail deposit market share, and this growth rate was better than most peers.
The bank achieved a 10% return on equity (ROE), which is generally considered to be the threshold of a strong ROE.
Consumer banking added 175,000 net new checking accounts and consumer investment accounts grew by 13% thanks to strong market performance and inflows of capital.
Bank of America has the No. 3 investment banking market share year-to-date.
The company is doing arguably the best of the big banks when it comes to leveraging AI. It has 1,400 AI and machine learning patents, and, just to name one example, its "Ask Merrill" and "Ask Private Bank" AI tools get 23 million interactions per year.
Bank of America spent $5.3 billion on stock buybacks and increased its dividend by 8%.
Net interest yield increased by 3 basis points year over year despite no recent Federal Reserve rate cuts.
Bank of America's net charge-off rate improved by four basis points compared with a year ago.
I'm paying close attention to numbers like the net interest margin in the persistent high-rate environment, and the bank's NCO rate, which is a great indicator of the financial health of its customers.
Is Bank of America a buy?
The bottom line is Bank of America is an excellent institution, and its management has done a great job of embracing technology. If rates start to fall later this year as many expect, it could provide a nice tailwind for the stock, and the banking industry as a whole.
In fact, there could be several positive tailwinds in the next few years, including a looser regulatory environment, the surge in IPO and M&A activity we're seeing, and potential lower corporate tax rates. With Bank of America shares trading for less than 13 times forward earnings and a historically attractive valuation of less than 1.3 times book value, Bank of America could be an excellent performer over the next few years.

Bank of America Is One of the Largest Financial Companies by Market Cap. But Is It a Buy?

The cryptocurrency rally has been continuing despite a mixed bag of economic data released over the past couple of weeks. The Federal Reserve is likely to keep interest rates unchanged, while uncertainty over the impact of President Donald Trump’s tariffs is again raising concerns over the economy’s future.
Bitcoin (BTC), which hit an all-time high last week, has managed to hold its ground and has surpassed expectations of analysts. The cryptocurrency is on track to hit another new all-time high, and experts believe that it has the potential to surpass $150,000 this year.
Given this situation, it would be ideal to invest in crypto-focused stocks. We have selected three stocks, namely Visa Inc. V, Robinhood Markets, Inc. HOOD and Interactive Brokers Group IBKR. Each of these stocks has strong growth potential for 2025 and has seen positive earnings estimate revisions in the last 90 days.
Bitcoin Rally Continues
Bitcoin hit an all-time high of $123,153.22 last week, before giving up some of its gains. The cryptocurrency has mostly been hovering around $119,000 since then. Concerns about potential new tariffs and a jump in June inflation caused by existing tariffs led to a slight dip in Bitcoin's value over the past few days.
However, Trump said on Tuesday that trade talks are underway with several countries and more deals will be announced before the Aug. 1 deadline for his tariffs. This came as Trump announced that the United States reached a massive $550 billion trade deal with Japan, just two weeks after threatening with 25% tariffs.
Trump also recently announced trade deals with the Philippines and Indonesia. Meanwhile, a surge in June retail sales suggests that the economy is still on solid ground, which gives the Fed ample reasons to keep interest rates unchanged in its upcoming meeting late this month.
However, market participants are still hopeful that the Federal Reserve will implement two 25 basis point rate cuts this year, which is likely to boost Bitcoin further.

Affirm represents the modern alternative to traditional credit cards, with its BNPL model reshaping how consumers finance purchases. In fiscal third-quarter 2025, Affirm’s revenues improved 36% year over year to $783.1 million, driven by higher gross merchandise volume (GMV) and expanded merchant relationships. What makes Affirm structurally compelling is its ability to operate outside the traditional credit-card networks. Its partnerships with Shopify, Amazon, Costco and Apple allow it to plug directly into consumer spending. Affirm’s AI-powered underwriting tools and real-time risk assessment give it the agility to approve users more accurately and scale profitably. Unlike Visa, which largely benefits from payment routing, Affirm profits from originating and managing consumer credit directly.
The company’s diversified funding model, including 24 securitizations totaling $12.25 billion and relationships with 150+ capital partners, underscores its growing operational maturity. And while Affirm is not yet consistently profitable for a long period, its investments in automation, gen AI, and merchant analytics tools are positioning it for long-term operating leverage. With younger demographics favoring transparent instalment payments, Affirm is well-aligned with consumer trends.
Internationally, Affirm is scaling through a strategic partnership with Shopify to enter Western Europe, following its U.K. launch. With more than 358,000 merchant partners, this global push opens up significant new revenue streams. Affirm is also broadening its ecosystem beyond core BNPL, investing in debit card offerings and B2B tools to further diversify business.
AFRM’s long-term debt-to-capital of 71.8% is significantly higher than Visa’s 30.7%, but that is not entirely unexpected for the fintech, still scaling operations. Affirm's high leverage reflects its aggressive growth strategy and non-bank structure, which is normal for its business model, but also means higher interest expense risk and greater exposure to credit market tightening.
How Do Zacks Estimates Compare for V & AFRM?
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for Affirm's bottom line is comparably favorable at this stage. The consensus estimate for V’s fiscal 2025 earnings indicates a 13.1% increase from a year ago, while the same for revenues suggests 10.3% growth. On the other hand, the Zacks Consensus Estimate for Affirm's fiscal 2025 EPS indicates 101.8% year-over-year improvement, and the same for revenues signals a 37.1% rise.
Valuation: V vs. AFRM
On a price-to-sales basis, Visa sits at 15.04X forward revenues, significantly above the industry average of 6.30X. By contrast, Affirm’s price-to-sales multiple is at 5.41X, in line with its high growth fintech peers. Affirm’s cheaper P/S multiple leaves room for significant growth as business expansion accelerates.
Price Performance Comparison
Visa has returned 32.5% in the past year, buoyed by resilient spending trends and market optimism. Affirm, meanwhile, has delivered a massive 127.5% return, driven by its outsized revenue growth and positive guidance surprises. Both have outperformed the industry and the S&P 500 Index during this time.
Conclusion
While Visa with a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy), continues to dominate global payments with scale, profitability and unmatched trust, its model is comparatively mature and tethered to the pace of economic activity. Here's why these three options could be brilliant stocks to buy and hold for the long term (for the right investor).
1. Federal Realty is boring and reliable
Federal Realty is a retail-focused real estate investment trust (REIT). It owns strip malls and mixed-use developments that are centered around retail assets. It isn't the biggest retail REIT, owning only around 100 properties. However, those properties are large and very well located, with higher average populations and income than the REIT's closest peers.

One of the key skills that Federal Realty possesses is on the development and redevelopment front. In fact, it is a fairly active portfolio manager, buying assets that need some love, fixing them up to increase their value and rent-generating capacity, and then selling if a good price can be had. The process is then repeated. This model has worked very well over time, noting that Federal Realty is the only REIT to have achieved Dividend King status.
Now add in an attractive 4.6% dividend yield, which is well above the 1.3% yield of the S&P 500 index (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) and the 4.1% yield of the average REIT. If you are looking for a large and reliable income stream, Federal Realty should be on your radar today.
2. Visa is a dividend growth machine
Not every dividend investor is looking for a big yield; some are looking for dividend growth. That's where Visa excels, noting that its annualized dividend growth rate over the past decade was a shockingly impressive 17%. More recent growth has been a bit slower, but the dividend growth rates over the one-, three-, and five-year periods are all over 10%. These are the kind of stats that dividend growth investors should love.
Visa is a payment processor. It collects small fees for facilitating billions of transactions with cards that carry its logo. No single fee is very large, but over the vast number of transactions it handles, the figures add up. And, despite its already impressive scale, the business is still growing. In the second quarter of 2025, Visa processed 9% more transactions than it did a year ago, leading to a 9% jump in revenues and a 10% increase in adjusted earnings.
The one problem with Visa stock is that investors are well aware of how attractive the business is today, and the stock's price-to-sales and price-to-earnings ratios are above their five-year averages. That said, neither of these metrics is shockingly above its average, so more aggressive investors focused on dividend growth (the dividend yield is a tiny 0.7% or so) still might want to dive in here, noting that the world continues to move toward digital and card payments.
3. Bank of Nova Scotia is a low-risk and high-yield turnaround
Bank of Nova Scotia, which normally just gets shortened to Scotiabank, is one of the largest banks in Canada. Canada has strict banking regulations that have, effectively, created protected industry positions for the country's largest banks. And that regulation has generally left the largest banks, like Scotiabank, with a conservative ethos.
That's the backdrop for a stock that is offering up an attractively high 5.7% yield. The dividend, meanwhile, has been paid every year since 1833. This is a reliable dividend stock, but it isn't exactly running on all cylinders today.
Scotiabank attempted to differentiate itself by focusing on Central and South America as it looked to expand beyond its Canadian borders. That didn't work out as well as hoped, and it is now revamping its approach, exiting weaker markets, emphasizing stronger markets, and including the U.S. in the mix to a greater degree. This effort is ongoing, making Scotiabank a turnaround story, but it seems to be achieving decent success. Notably, dividend growth was put on pause in 2024, but has resumed again in 2025.

However, Visa’s growth is naturally tied to the pace of consumer spending and cross-border transactions, both of which are increasingly vulnerable to economic cycles and inflation pressures.
Additionally, Visa’s business model is primarily fee-based and intermediated, dependent on banks, merchants and processors. This layered structure contrasts with the emerging direct-to-consumer models that fintech disruptors are leveraging to sidestep traditional rails. As the payments landscape shifts toward embedded finance and alternative credit models, Visa’s legacy advantage may be less compelling for tech-savvy Gen Z and millennial consumers seeking speed, flexibility and something fresh.
The Case for Affirm
Affirm represents the modern alternative to traditional credit cards, with its BNPL model reshaping how consumers finance purchases. In fiscal third-quarter 2025, Affirm’s revenues improved 36% year over year to $783.1 million, driven by higher gross merchandise volume (GMV) and expanded merchant relationships. Its active consumer count rose to 21.9 million, and transactions per active user grew by 21.7%, showing rising engagement and repeat usage.

What makes Affirm structurally compelling is its ability to operate outside the traditional credit-card networks. Its partnerships with Shopify, Amazon, Costcoand Apple allow it to plug directly into consumer spending. Affirm’s AI-powered underwriting tools and real-time risk assessment give it the agility to approve users more accurately and scale profitably. Unlike Visa, which largely benefits from payment routing, Affirm profits from originating and managing consumer credit directly.
The company’s diversified funding model, including 24 securitizations totaling $12.25 billion and relationships with 150+ capital partners, underscores its growing operational maturity. And while Affirm is not yet consistently profitable for a long period, its investments in automation, gen AI, and merchant analytics tools are positioning it for long-term operating leverage. With younger demographics favoring transparent instalment payments, Affirm is well-aligned with consumer trends.
Internationally, Affirm is scaling through a strategic partnership with Shopify to enter Western Europe, following its U.K. launch. With more than 358,000 merchant partners, this global push opens up significant new revenue streams. Affirm is also broadening its ecosystem beyond core BNPL, investing in debit card offerings and B2B tools to further diversify business.
AFRM’s long-term debt-to-capital of 71.8% is significantly higher than Visa’s 30.7%, but that is not entirely unexpected for the fintech, still scaling operations. Affirm's high leverage reflects its aggressive growth strategy and non-bank structure, which is normal for its business model, but also means higher interest expense risk and greater exposure to credit market tightening.
How Do Zacks Estimates Compare for V & AFRM?
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for Affirm'sbottom line is comparably favorable at this stage. The consensus estimate for V’s fiscal 2025 earnings indicates a 13.1% increase from a year ago, while the same for revenues suggests 10.3% growth. On the other hand, the Zacks Consensus Estimate for Affirm'sfiscal 2025 EPS indicates 101.8% year-over-year improvement, and the same for revenues signals a 37.1% rise.
Valuation: V vs. AFRM
On a price-to-sales basis, Visa sits at 15.04X forward revenues, significantly above the industry average of 6.30X. By contrast, Affirm’s price-to-sales multiple is at 5.41X, in line with its high growth fintech peers. Affirm’s cheaper P/S multiple leaves room for significant growth as business expansion accelerates.

Visa vs. Affirm: Old Guard or Fintech Fire - Who Wins the Payment War?

Chime
Chime runs a fintech app for mobile banking services. It provides access to free checking and savings accounts with overdraft protection and early pay features. It also offers a Visa (NYSE: V) debit card with fee-free access to over 50,000 ATMs in the U.S., as well as a credit card for customers with lower credit scores.
Chime isn't a bank. It tethers its users to two FDIC-insured partner banks -- The Bancorp Bank and Stride Bank -- which actually hold and manage those accounts. It generates most of its revenue by taking a cut of the swipe fees that Visa charges merchants for processing its debit and credit cards. A smaller percentage of its revenue comes from the incentives it earns from The Bancorp Bank and Stride Bank for bringing in new deposits.
Chime mainly serves lower-income customers who don't have enough assets to sign up for fee-free checking and savings accounts at larger banks. Its interest-free early pay features are also useful for people who live paycheck to paycheck. That strategy is helping Chime carve out a high-growth niche in the crowded fintech market.
In 2024, its revenue rose 31% and its adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) nearly broke even. Its number of active members grew 25% to 6.6 million as its average revenue per active member (ARPAM) improved from $210 to $212. In the first quarter, its revenue rose 32% year over year, its adjusted EBITDA margin turned positive, its active members jumped 23% to 8.6 million, and its ARPAM grew 9% to $251.
From 2025 to 2027, analysts expect its revenue and adjusted EBITDA to grow at a CAGR of 19% and 175%, respectively. With an enterprise value of $10.6 billion, it still looks reasonably valued at 45 times next year's adjusted EBITDA -- especially if you think it can keep attracting more unbanked individuals as it expands its ecosystem.
Nu Holdings
Nu's Nubank is the largest digital bank in Latin America. It's based in Brazil, but it also operates in Mexico and Colombia. Without any brick-and-mortar branches, it expanded at a much faster rate than the region's traditional banks. It also increased the stickiness of its ecosystem with credit cards, e-commerce services, and cryptocurrency trading tools.
About a fifth of Latin America's adult population was still unbanked in 2023, according to Mastercard's estimates, so NuBank still has plenty of room to keep growing.
From 2021 to 2024, its number of year-end customers more than tripled from 33.3 million to 114.2 million, its monthly activity rate (its active customers divided by customers) increased from 71% to 83%, and its average revenue per active customer (ARPAC) more than doubled from $4.50 to $10.70. Its average cost for serving each active customer also held steady -- so it didn't sacrifice its margins to aggressively expand. Its rapid growth and firm financial discipline helped it stay profitable over the past two years.
In the first quarter of 2025, Nu's customer base grew 19% year over year to 118.6 million, its activity rate held steady at 83%, and its ARPAC rose 17% year over year to $11.20. From 2024 to 2027, analysts expect its revenue and net income to grow at a CAGR of 28% and 37%, respectively, as it stays on top of the Latin American market.
Nu's stock still looks like a bargain at 18 times next year's earnings, presumably because the political unrest and inflation are driving many investors away from Latin American stocks. But if you expect those headwinds to eventually dissipate, it could be a great time to invest in Nu's undervalued stock.

Based on these metrics and many more, WEX holds a Value grade of B, while V has a Value grade of D.
Both WEX and V are impressive stocks with solid earnings outlooks, but based on these valuation figures, we feel that WEX is the superior value option right now.

Shares of JPMorgan Chase have outperformed the Zacks Financial - Investment Bank industry over the past year (+41.6% vs. +40.7%). The company’s second-quarter 2025 results reflected solid capital markets performance and decent loan growth. The company's business expansion initiatives, moderate loan demand and relatively high interest rates will drive net interest income (NII) growth.
Yet, the volatile nature of the capital markets business and high mortgage rates will hurt fee income growth. As the company invests in technology and marketing, operating expenses are expected to remain elevated. Weak asset quality due to a challenging macroeconomic environment is another concern.
While a solid resurgence in deal-making activities is likely to take time, a solid pipeline and the company’s leadership position will drive the investment banking (IB) business. Its enhanced capital distributions seem sustainable.

Visa’s shares have outperformed the Zacks Financial Transaction Services industry over the past year (+32.3% vs. +26.2%). The company’s strong market position is underpinned by consistent volume-driven growth, acquisitions and technological leadership in digital payments. Expansion in cross-border volumes, rising digital transactions, and investments in AI and stablecoin infrastructure enhance its future prospects.
A robust financial position with ample liquidity and shareholder returns further supports long-term growth. In 2Q FY25, processed transactions grew 9% year over year. However, Visa faces rising client incentives and expenses, which may weigh slightly on margins.
The company expects high single- to low double-digit expense growth in fiscal 2025. Regulatory pressures and potential legislative changes pose additional risks to its fee structures. The stock’s premium valuation suggests limited near-term upside. As such, the stock warrants a cautious stance.

Is Ripple gaining regulatory and industry buy-in?
The biggest cause of Ripple's recent price surge has been growing optimism surrounding the regulatory environment, as well as encouraging signs of potential industry adoption.
For years, Ripple has faced a long list of regulatory and adoption challenges. From a regulatory standpoint, the project has been involved in a lawsuit by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which charges it with selling unregistered securities in the coin lauch. After roughly five years, the case was finally settled for $50 million in May, unburdening the project from one of its biggest valuation drags.
From an industry buy-in standpoint, the project has long struggled to attract top-tier banks to its novel system of cross-border transactions. That remains a long-term challenge, but ongoing adoption by global banks, including Travelex Bank in Brazil, Axis Bank in India, UnionBank in the Philippines, ChinaBank, and Qatar National Bank, has provided real-world validation of Ripple's network. Partnerships with local banks help the Ripple team make their services easy to use.
The cross-border transactions market is already worth around $200 trillion today. By the end of the decade, its value is expected to approach $300 trillion. Ripple is clearly competing in a gigantic market -- one of the largest total addressable markets in the world. Adoption and regulatory approval have long been the challenge. But improving conditions this year for both of those categories have investors increasingly excited.
Buy Ripple today if you fit this one characteristic
Do improving conditions make Ripple a buy today? For many investors, the answer is yes. In fact, Ripple could be a buy as long as it's under $10. At $10, Ripple would have a $600 billion market cap. That's justifiable, assuming Ripple takes only a few percentage points off the market shares of various global payment networks.
The SWIFT network, for example, handles more than $5 trillion in transactions per day. Capturing just 1% of this volume would result in roughly $18 trillion in annual volume for Ripple. At that rate, Ripple would likely be worth significantly more than $10.
If you're an aggressive growth investor seeking maximum upside potential, Ripple looks like a buy at under $10. But if you're looking for a more balanced risk-versus-reward scenario, it's best to look elsewhere. That's because the global payments system is highly consolidated, as SWIFT's massive volumes show.
Financial institutions have long been wary of competing systems and are unlikely to switch en masse to a relatively unproven system like Ripple, even if Ripple's network is superior on paper. Additionally, there is growing competition for alternative payment networks such as Visa's B2B Connect and JPMorgan's Onyx platform.
From a fundamentals perspective, it's still far too early to nail down a fair valuation for Ripple. It remains a very speculative asset. There's huge upside to be sure, but if and when that upside is realized, as well as its ultimate magnitude, is difficult to predict.
Aggressive growth investors should strongly consider a small exposure to Ripple. Most investors, however, are better off elsewhere.
