I've been making the case for a while that United Parcel Service (NYSE: UPS) was poised to be a great turnaround story. It's too soon for me to be able to brag that I was right. However, UPS stock has risen around 25% over the last four months – an encouraging trend.
UPS reported its 2025 full-year and fourth-quarter results on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2026. The company delivered good news, bad news, and great news for investors.

The good news
Perhaps the most important good news from UPS' Q4 update was that it easily beat Wall Street's expectations. The package delivery giant generated revenue of $24.5 billion in the fourth quarter, higher than the average estimate of $24 billion. UPS posted Q4 adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $2.38, well above the consensus estimate of $2.20.
In her remarks during the Q4 earnings call, UPS CEO Carol Tomé said that the "results exceeded our expectations, driven by strong revenue quality, solid cost management, and overall great execution." She noted that the company's international small package business recorded its highest Q4 revenue in four years.
Tomé's reference to revenue quality reflects more good news. Although UPS' U.S. daily volume declined by 10.8% year over year, its revenue per piece jumped 8.3%. The company's focus on revenue quality over quantity appears to be working.
UPS continues to make progress in two key market segments. Its small- and medium-sized business (SMB) penetration in Q4 was the highest in the company's history. Business-to-business (B2B) penetration was the highest fourth-quarter level in six years. CFO Brian Dykes cited healthcare logistics as a "robust growth area" for UPS.
The bad news
Investors didn't celebrate UPS' solid results, though. With shares falling moderately after the Q4 update, they appeared to focus more on the company's bad news.
UPS is likely headed for a weak first half of 2026. Dykes said in theearnings callthat management expects profits to decline around 30% year over year in the first quarter of 2026. Tomé referred to a "bathtub effect" this year, with the first half down and the second half up.
Why the disparity between the first six months of 2026 and the last six months? Four factors stand out.
UPS' Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) volume glide-down and the timing of related higher costs will hit harder in the first half of the year. So will the transition costs associated with shifting Ground Saver back to the U.S. Postal Service. Additionally, UPS will incur higher costs in the first part of the year related to the retirement of its MD-11 aircraft fleet. The impact of tariffs is also an issue.
The great news
Now for the great news for UPS. 2026 is expected to be an inflection point for the company. The future of UPS won't be focused on shrinking its business but instead on growing in higher-margin areas.
The Amazon glide-down will be completed this year. Although UPS' overall shipment volume will decline, its cost structure will also be lower. The network reconfiguration resulting from the Amazon strategy should make UPS leaner and more agile as it targets more profitable shipments.
For income investors who love UPS' juicy 6.2% dividend yield, perhaps the greatest news of all is that the dividend should be on a firmer footing in 2026 than in 2025. The company paid more in dividends than it generated in free cash flow last year. However, UPS projects free cash flow of $6.5 billion in 2026 and plans to pay dividends of around $5.4 billion (subject to board approval).
Granted, the 2026 free cash flow estimate doesn't account for the financial impact of UPS' voluntary driver separation program. But that's only a one-time issue for the company. Even better, the driver separation program positions UPS to generate higher free cash flow going forward.
I know that some have argued in the past that UPS could (and even should) cut its dividend. This scenario seems unlikely anytime soon, based on the company's Q4 update. Again, that's really great news for income investors.

Ending on a high note
UPS recently reported its fourth-quarter and full-year financial results. The company generated $24.5 billion in revenue in the fourth quarter, just ahead of analysts' expectations. Meanwhile, its adjusted earnings of $2.38 per share beat the consensus estimate of $2.20 per share. Those results pushed the company's full-year revenue to $88.7 billion, while its adjusted earnings per share were $7.16. However, UPS' revenue is still well below the $100 billion it reported in 2022.
The company's financial results have been under pressure in recent years due to global trade issues and its decision to reduce its reliance on its top customer, Amazon. These issues led the company to focus on reducing costs and growing revenue from higher-margin sources. It made significant progress last year by closing facilities, reducing its workforce, and expanding its healthcare logistics capabilities.
That enabled the company to steadily improve its free cash flow. It generated $8.5 billion in cash from operations last year and $5.5 billion in adjusted free cash flow. It paid $5.4 billion in dividends and completed $1 billion in share repurchases. UPS used its strong balance sheet to cover the shortfall.
Hitting an inflection point
UPS anticipates "2026 will be an inflection point in the execution of our strategy to deliver growth and sustained margin expansion," commented CEO Carol Tome in the fourth-quarter earnings press release. The company expects to complete its strategy of reducing its low-margin Amazon volumes by 50% this year. That should boost its margins as it replaces those volumes with higher margin revenue.
Despite lower Amazon revenue, UPS anticipates its sales will rise to $89.7 billion this year. Meanwhile, the company expects to incur about $3 billion in capital expenditures, which is down from $3.7 billion last year. Additionally, it plans to pay another $5.4 billion in dividends this year. It should be able to cover its shareholder payout with free cash flow again in 2026. It also has a hefty cash balance (nearly $5.9 billion at the end of 2025), which provides it with some cushion.
The dividend is growing more sustainable
UPS has either maintained or increased its dividend every year since going public in 1999. The company's commitment to this payment is one of its core principles and a key indicator of its financial strength. While sustainability questions have surrounded the shareholder payout in recent years, it appears to be heading back toward solid ground. That makes UPS an intriguing option for investors seeking a potentially lucrative stream of dividend income.

UPS Plans to Continue Delivering its 6%-Yielding Dividend in 2026

Investors were not pleased with UPS (NYSE: UPS) in early 2025 when the company announced plans to reduce deliveries for Amazon by more than 50% by late 2026. The move would lead to a full-year revenue decline and force a broad restructuring of the company's delivery network to account for the reduction in package volume.
With the plan now well underway, the stock market is finally getting on board. UPS stock rose on Tuesday morning after the company beat expectations for the fourth quarter and announced sweeping job cuts related to the Amazon wind-down. While UPS's revenue sank in the fourth quarter, the benefits of dumping Amazon are becoming apparent.

The end of a one-sided arrangement
In 2024, Amazon accounted for 11% of UPS's revenue but between 20% and 25% of U.S. network volume. Amazon was the company's largest customer, but not the most profitable. The low-margin Amazon packages helped fill UPS's planes and trucks, but they were hurting the company's profit margins.
In 2025, UPS reduced Amazon volume by 1 million pieces per day. The plan for 2026 is to knock off another 1 million pieces per day, bringing the Amazon business down to a level that makes more economic sense for the company. UPS closed 93 buildings in the U.S. last year as part of this plan, consolidating its network into fewer facilities. These building closures, along with other initiatives, delivered $3.5 billion in cost savings.
UPS eliminated 48,000 positions in 2025, including a reduction of 15,000 seasonal positions, resulting in 26.9 million fewer labor hours compared to 2024. Another 30,000 job cuts are planned for 2026, along with 24 additional building closures. These moves should reduce labor hours by another 25 million.
While U.S. average daily volume declined by 10.8% in the fourth quarter due to the Amazon plan, revenue per piece rose by 8.3%. Adjusted operating profit declined slightly, but adjusted operating margin improved. UPS reported an adjusted operating margin for the U.S. segment of 10.2% in the fourth quarter of 2025, up from 10.1% in the prior-year period. That improvement came despite unusual costs associated with grounding a portion of its aircraft fleet.
A path to profit margin growth
The path forward will be bumpy for UPS, with revenue declines from the Amazon plan and costs associated with closing facilities and finishing the network reconfiguration weighing on results. For 2026, the company expects an overall adjusted operating margin of 9.6%, down a bit from 9.8% in 2025.
This outlook is notably lower than UPS projected back in mid-2024. During an investor and analyst conference, the company forecast an adjusted operating margin of at least 13% and substantially higher revenue than its current outlook. That was before the company kicked off its plan to drop most of Amazon's business, and it will now take longer to reach those targets.
In the long run, generating more revenue per piece and reducing costs across its network can drive operating margin expansion. UPS is calling 2026 an inflection point, with the U.S. business expected to improve meaningfully in the second half of the year once the Amazon plan has been completed. With a big chunk of low-margin revenue out of the picture, the worst will be over.
UPS's deliberate downsizing has been painful for investors, as the stock has tumbled from its multi-year high. But the light at the end of the tunnel is now visible, and UPS is positioned for healthy growth and margin expansion in 2027 and beyond.

UPS Is Firing Its Biggest Customer -- And Wall Street Finally Understands Why

In 2025, United Parcel Service’s UPS management had reached an agreement in principle with Amazon. com AMZN to reduce the e-commerce giant’s volume by more than 50% by June 2026. CEO Carol Tome noted that Amazon was not the company’s most profitable customer. The reduction in volumes is compelling UPS to right-size its network.
UPS has shifted its focus to higher-margin areas such as small and medium-sized businesses and healthcare logistics from low-margin volumes like Amazon. As part of the restructuring and cost-cutting efforts, UPS announced on the fourth-quarter 2025 conference call yesterday that it would eliminate up to 30,000 operational jobs and close multiple facilities by 2026. This move aims to reduce reliance on Amazon deliveries and pivot toward more profitable business endeavors.
Per UPS’ CFO, Brian Dykes said it aims reduce about 25 million total operational work hours in 2026 because Amazon shipments are declining. Outlining the details of the job-cut plan, Dykes said that job losses will occur through attrition and a second voluntary exit program to be offered by UPS for full-time drivers.
UPS, which closed 93 buildings in 2025, has already selected 24 buildings for closure. These buildings will close in the first half of 2026. More buildings are likely to be closed later in the year. The company aims to deploy more automation across the network to trim costs and improve efficiency. These measures are expected to help UPS to achieve $3 billion in savings related to the Amazon glide-down.
UPS’ competitor FedEx FDX is also implementing cost-cutting measures to address the soft demand environment and improve operations through its Network 2.0 initiative. A few years back, FedEx introduced DRIVE, a broad program aimed at enhancing long-term profitability.
DRIVE generated $1.8 billion in permanent savings in fiscal 2024 and delivered an additional $2.2 billion in cost savings in fiscal 2025. These efforts include lowering flight frequencies, parking aircraft and reducing headcount. For fiscal 2026, FedEx’s management expects to achieve $1 billion in transformation-related savings through initiatives such as DRIVE and Network 2.0.

UPS to Trim Workforce to Reduce Amazon Deliveries: What Lies Ahead?

UPS (NYSE: UPS) delivered a decent set of fourth-quarter results on Tuesday and announced a series of layoffs. Investors reacted by trading the logistics giant's shares marginally higher on the day, with their 0.2% gain slightly lagging the bellwether S&P 500 index's 0.4% increase.
A bullish reaction to fundamental declines
For its final frame of 2025, UPS booked total revenue of just under $24.5 billion, a 3% decline from the fourth quarter of 2024. Its operating profit not in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) fell by nearly 7% year-over-year to nearly $2.9 billion, or $2.38 per share.

Both figures topped the consensus analyst estimates. Collectively, pundits tracking UPS stock were modeling slightly more than $24 billion in revenue and $2.20 per share for non-GAAP (adjusted) net income.
During the quarter, a crucial one for the company given that it included the holiday season, UPS experienced a 3% decline in its domestic segment, mainly due to lower shipment volume. On the other hand, revenue from its international operations rose at nearly the same percentage rate, thanks to a more than 7% increase in revenue per item shipped.
UPS also declared its latest quarterly dividend. At $1.64 per share, it matches the previous four distributions, and yields 6.1%.
The company said that it aims to reduce its workforce by as much as 30,000 this year. CFO Brian Dykes said the move "will be accomplished through attrition, and we expect to offer a second voluntary separation program for full-time drivers."
The Amazon Effect
UPS has been quite an underperforming stock since it and Amazon started to "decouple," their once-tight business relationship early last year. Investors generally don't like to see a top partner's business melt away, even if the arrangement wasn't particularly lucrative for UPS.
Given that, I'd say the company's results weren't bad, although they weren't overly impressive either. These days, UPS is basically an income stock, and as long as the company is able to (at least) maintain its present payout, the shares will be attractive.

Why UPS Stock Crept Higher on Tuesday

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) today is up +0.47%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) (DIA) is down -0.84%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) is up +0.87%. March E-mini S&P futures (ESH26) are up +0.48%, and March E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQH26) are up +0.90%.
Stock indexes are mostly higher today, with the S&P 500 posting a 2-week high and the Nasdaq 100 posting a 2.75-month high. Strength in chipmakers and AI infrastructure stocks is leading the broader market higher today, with Micron Technology rising 5% after it said it plans to invest $24 billion in Singapore and expand its memory-chip capacity. Also, strong Q4 corporate earnings results are underpinning stocks. Stocks maintained their gains today despite an unexpected decline in the Conference Board’s US Jan consumer confidence index to an 11.5-year low.

The weakness in health insurance stocks is weighing on the Dow Jones Industrials after the US government proposed holding payments to private Medicare plans flat next year. Health insurers added to their losses after UnitedHealth Group forecast a decline in 2026 revenue, the first annual contraction in more than 30 years.
Stocks are also being pressured by President Trump’s new threat of 100% tariffs on US imports from Canada, the possibility of a US government shutdown over ICE funding, lingering concerns about Greenland, and business and travel disruptions from the massive storm that just crossed the US. In addition, there is political uncertainty about the Fed, as the FOMC is expected to leave rates unchanged at its meeting this week, potentially drawing new threats from Mr. Trump for refusing to cut rates further.
The risk of another partial government shutdown is also weighing on stocks. Senate Democrats threatened to block a government funding deal over Department of Homeland Security/ICE funding after the ICE shooting of an ICU nurse in Minnesota on Saturday. There could be a partial government shutdown when the current stopgap funding measure expires this Friday.
ADP reported that US private payrolls rose an average of 7,750 per week in the four weeks ending January 3, the smallest weekly increase in six weeks.
The US Nov S&P composite-20 home price index rose +1.39% y/y, stronger than expectations of +1.20% y/y.
The Conference Board US Jan consumer confidence index unexpectedly fell -9.7 to an 11.5-year low of 84.5, weaker than expectations of an increase to 91.0.
The US Jan Richmond Fed manufacturing survey rose +1 to -6, slightly weaker than expectations of -5.
The market’s focus this week will be on new tariff news and the prospects for a continued resolution (CR) to fund the government. On Wednesday, the FOMC is expected to keep the fed funds target range unchanged at 3.50%-3.75%. Post-meeting comments on Wednesday from Fed Chair Powell will also be scrutinized for clues to the future of Fed policy. On Thursday, initial weekly unemployment claims are expected to increase by 5,000 to 205,000. Also, Q3 nonfarm productivity is expected to be unrevised at 4.9%. In addition, the Nov trade deficit is expected to widen to -$44.10 billion. Finally, Nov factory offers are expected to increase by +1.6% m/m. On Friday, Dec PPI final demand is expected to ease to +2.8% y/y from +3.0% y/y in Nov, and Dec PPI ex-food and energy is expected to ease to +2.9% y/y from +3.0% y/y in Nov. Also, the Jan MNI Chicago PMI is expected to climb by +0.8 to 43.5.
Q4 earnings season is in full swing, with 102 of the S&P 500 companies scheduled to report earnings this week. Earnings have been a positive factor for stocks, with 81% of the 83 S&P 500 companies that have reported beating expectations. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, S&P earnings growth is expected to climb by +8.4% in Q4. Excluding the Magnificent Seven megacap technology stocks, Q4 earnings are expected to increase by +4.6%.
The markets are discounting a 3% chance of a -25 bp rate cut at this week’s FOMC meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday (Jan 27-28).
Overseas stock markets are higher today. The Euro Stoxx 50 rose to a 1-week high and is up +0.46%. China’s Shanghai Composite closed up +0.18%. Japan’s Nikkei Stock 225 closed up +0.85%.
Interest Rates
March 10-year T-notes (ZNH6) today are down by -1 tick. The 10-year T-note yield is up +0.4 bp to 4.215%. Strength in stocks today is weighing on T-notes. Also, supply pressures are undercutting T-note prices ahead of a $70 billion Treasury auction of 5-year T-notes later today. Also, Micron Technology (MU) is up more than +4% after it said it plans to invest $24 billion in Singapore and expand its memory-chip capacity. In addition, Applied Materials (AMAT) is up more than +4%, and KLA Corp (KLAC), ASML Holding NV (ASML), and Intel (INTC) are up more than +3%. Finally, Nvidia (NVDA), Broadcom (AVGO), Marvel Technology (MRVL), and Microchip Technology (MCHP) are up more than +1%.

UnitedHealth Group (UNH) is down more than -19% to lead losers in the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrials after it forecast a decline in 2026 revenue, the first annual contraction in more than 30 years. Also, Humana (HUM) is down more than -19%, and Alignment Healthcare (ALHC) is down more than -15%. In addition, Elevance Health (ELV), CVS Health (CVS), and Centene (CNC) are down by more than -11%, and Molina Healthcare (MOH) is down more than -5%.

HCA Healthcare (HCA) is up more than +11% after reporting Q4 net income of $1.88 billion, better than the consensus of $1.73 billion.
General Motors (GM) is up more than +9% after reporting Q4 adjusted EPS of $2.51, better than the consensus of $2.28 and forecasting full-year adjusted EPS of $11.00 to $13.00, the midpoint above the consensus of $11.79.

Broader Market Rallies on Tech Strength and Solid Earnings

The SPDR S&P Transportation ETF is seeing unusually high volume in afternoon trading Tuesday, with over 229,000 shares traded versus three month average volume of about 29,000. Shares of XTN were trading flat on the day.
Components of that ETF with the highest volume on Tuesday were American Airlines Group, trading down about 3.5% with over 37.7 million shares changing hands so far this session, and Jetblue Airways, down about 6.4% on volume of over 15.5 million shares. United Parcel Service is the component faring the best Tuesday, up by about 4.9% on the day.

The board of directors of Kimberly-Clark has declared an increase in its regular quarterly dividend to $1.28 per share, up from $1.26 previously. The dividend is payable in cash on April 2, 2026, to stockholders of record at the close of business on March 6, 2026. Kimberly-Clark has paid a dividend for 92 consecutive years, and this represents the 54th consecutive year that the company has increased its dividend to shareholders.
Weatherford International today announced that its Board of Directors has declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.275 per share on the Company's ordinary shares, representing a 10% increase compared to the prior quarterly dividend. The dividend is payable on March 5, 2026 to shareholders of record as of February 6, 2026.
Williams' board of directors has approved a regular dividend of $0.525 per share, or $2.10 annualized, on the company's common stock, payable on March 30, 2026, to holders of record at the close of business on March 13, 2026. This is a 5% increase from Williams' fourth-quarter 2025 quarterly dividend of $0.50 per share, paid in December 2025. Williams has paid a common stock dividend every quarter since 1974.
Cheniere Energy today announced that its Board of Directors has declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.555 per common share payable on February 27, 2026 to shareholders of record as of the close of business on February 6, 2026.
The UPS Board of Directors has approved a first-quarter 2026 dividend of $1.64 per share on all outstanding Class A and Class B shares. The dividend is payable March 5, 2026, to shareowners of record on February 17, 2026.

United Parcel Service, Inc. (UPS) reported solid fourth-quarter 2025 results, wherein the company’s earnings and revenues surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate.
Quarterly earnings per share (excluding 28 cents from non-recurring items) of $2.38 beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.22 but declined 13.5% year over year. Revenues of $24.4 billion surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $24 billion but decreased 3.3% year over year.
Moreover, management provided upbeat full-year 2026 sales guidance, projecting revenues of approximately $89.7 billion, above the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $87.9 billion as well as the 2025 reported figure of $88.7 billion.

Other Aspects of Q4 Earnings Report
U.S. Domestic Package revenues of $16.8 billion decreased 3.2% year over year, owing to an expected decline in volume. Revenue per piece grew 8.3% year over year. Segmental operating profit (adjusted) fell 2.7% year over year to $1.71 billion. The adjusted operating margin for the segment was 10.2%.
Revenues in the International Package division totaled $5.05 billion, which increased 2.5% year over year, owing to a 7.1% increase in revenue per piece. Segmental operating profit (adjusted) totaled $908 million, down 14.5% year over year. The adjusted operating margin for the segment was 18%.
Supply Chain Solutions’ revenues of $2.67 billion decreased 12.7% year over year, owing to a decline in volume in the Mail Innovations business. Operating profit (on an adjusted basis) fell 2.8% year over year to $276 million. The adjusted operating margin for the segment was 10.3%.
The overall adjusted operating margin was 8.8%.
Remaining Aspects of UPS’ 2026 Outlook
Capital expenditures are estimated to be around $3 billion, with dividend payments expected to be around $5.4 billion (subject to board approval). The effective tax rate is expected to be around 23%.

Q4 Performances of Other Transportation Companies
Delta Air Lines DAL reported fourth-quarter 2025 earnings (excluding 31 cents from non-recurring items) of $1.55 per share, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.53. Earnings decreased 16.22% on a year-over-year basis due to high labor costs.
Revenues in the December-end quarter were $16 billion, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $15.63 billion and increasing 2.9% on a year-over-year basis. Adjusted operating revenues (excluding third-party refinery sales) increased 1.2% year over year to $14.6 billion. Revenue growth was impacted by about 2 points due to the government shutdown, mainly in the domestic segment, consistent with the company's disclosure last month.
J.B. Hunt Transport Services, Inc. (JBHT) reported fourth-quarter 2025 earnings of $1.90 per share, which surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.81 and improved 24.2% year over year.
Total operating revenues of $3.09 billion lagged the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $3.12 billion and were down 1.6% year over year. JBHT’s fourth-quarter revenue performance was hurt by a 2% and 4% decline in revenue per load excluding fuel surcharge revenue in Intermodal (JBI) and Truckload (JBT), respectively, a 1% decrease in average trucks in Dedicated Contract Services (DCS), and a 7% and 2% decline in load volume in Integrated Capacity Solutions (ICS) and JBI, respectively. The decrease in revenue, excluding fuel surcharge revenue, was partially offset by a 15% increase in volume in JBT, a 1% uptick in productivity, excluding fuel surcharge revenue, in DCS, and an increase in revenue per load in ICS. Total operating revenue, excluding fuel surcharge revenue, decreased 2% year over year.
United Airlines Holdings, Inc. (UAL) reported solid fourth-quarter 2025 results wherein the company’s earnings and revenues beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate.
UAL's fourth-quarter 2025 adjusted earnings per share (excluding 9 cents from non-recurring items) of $3.10 surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.98 but declined 4.9% on a year-over-year basis. The reported figure lies within the guided range of $3.00-$3.50.
Operating revenues of $15.4 billion outpaced the Zacks Consensus Estimate marginally by 0.1% and increased 4.8% year over year. Passenger revenues (which accounted for 90.4% of the top line) increased 4.9% year over year to $13.9 billion. UAL flights transported 45,679 passengers in the fourth quarter, up 3% year over year.
Cargo revenues fell 6% year over year to $490 million. Revenues from other sources rose 9.1% year over year to $981 million.

UPS Q4 Earnings & Revenues Surpass Estimates, Down Year Over Year

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) today is up +0.22%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) (DIA) is down -0.64%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) is up +0.44%. March E-mini S&P futures (ESH26) are up +0.22%, and March E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQH26) are up +0.49%.
Stock indexes are mostly higher today, with the S&P 500 posting a 1.5-week high and the Nasdaq 100 posting a 2.75-month high. Strength in chipmakers is leading the broader market higher today, with Micron Technology rising 4% after it said it plans to invest $24 billion in Singapore and expand its memory-chip capacity.

The weakness in health insurance stocks is weighing on the Dow Jones Industrials after the US government proposed holding payments to private Medicare plans flat next year. Health insurers added to their losses after UnitedHealth Group forecast a decline in 2026 revenue, the first annual contraction in more than 30 years. Higher bond yields are also bearish for stocks as the 10-year T-note yield is up +2 bp to 4.23%.
Stocks are also being pressured by President Trump’s new threat of 100% tariffs on US imports from Canada, the possibility of a US government shutdown over ICE funding, lingering concerns about Greenland, and business and travel disruptions from the massive storm that just crossed the US. In addition, there is political uncertainty about the Fed, as the FOMC is expected to leave rates unchanged at its meeting this week, potentially drawing new threats from Mr. Trump for refusing to cut rates further.
The risk of another partial government shutdown is also weighing on stocks. Senate Democrats threatened to block a government funding deal over Department of Homeland Security/ICE funding after the ICE shooting of an ICU nurse in Minnesota on Saturday. There could be a partial government shutdown when the current stopgap funding measure expires this Friday.
ADP reported that US private payrolls rose an average of 7,750 per week in the four weeks ending January 3, the smallest weekly increase in six weeks.
The US Nov S&P composite-20 home price index rose +1.39% y/y, stronger than expectations of +1.20% y/y.
The market’s focus this week will be on any new tariff news and the chances of a continued resolution (CR) to fund the government. Later today, the Conference Board's Jan consumer confidence index is expected to rise by 1.9 points to 91.0. On Wednesday, the FOMC is expected to keep the fed funds target range unchanged at 3.50%-3.75%. Post-meeting comments on Wednesday from Fed Chair Powell will also be scrutinized for clues to the future of Fed policy. On Thursday, initial weekly unemployment claims are expected to increase by 5,000 to 205,000. Also, Q3 nonfarm productivity is expected to be unrevised at 4.9%. In addition, the Nov trade deficit is expected to widen to -$44.10 billion. Finally, Nov factory offers are expected to increase by +1.6% m/m. On Friday, Dec PPI final demand is expected to ease to +2.8% y/y from +3.0% y/y in Nov and Dec PPI ex-food and energy is expected to ease to +2.9% y/y from +3.0% y/y in Nov. Also, the Jan MNI Chicago PMI is expected to climb by +0.8 to 43.5.
Q4 earnings season is in full swing, with 102 of the S&P 500 companies scheduled to report earnings this week. Earnings have been a positive factor for stocks, with 78% of the 64 S&P 500 companies that have reported beating expectations. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, S&P earnings growth is expected to climb by +8.4% in Q4. Excluding the Magnificent Seven megacap technology stocks, Q4 earnings are expected to increase by +4.6%.
The markets are discounting a 3% chance of a -25 bp rate cut at this week’s FOMC meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday (Jan 27-28).
Overseas stock markets are higher today. The Euro Stoxx 50 rose to a 1-week high and is up +0.42%. China’s Shanghai Composite closed up +0.18%. Japan’s Nikkei Stock 225 closed up +0.85%.
Interest Rates
March 10-year T-notes (ZNH6) today are down by -3 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is up +1.6 bp to 4.227%. Strength in stocks today is weighing on T-notes. Also, supply pressures are undercutting T-note prices ahead of a $70 billion Treasury auction of 5-year T-notes later today.
