In addition, it provides truckload and customs brokerage services; supply chain solutions to the healthcare and life sciences industries; fulfillment and transportation management services; and integrated supply chain and shipment insurance solutions. United Parcel Service, Inc.

Both Union Pacific UNP and United Parcel Service UPS delivered better-than-expected first-quarter 2026 results, but the quality and trajectory of growth diverged meaningfully.
UNP reported revenues of $6.22 billion, up 3.2% year over year, marginally beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate. Quarterly earnings (excluding 6 cents from non-recurring items) of $2.93 per share beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 2.8% and increased 8.5% on a year-over-year basis.
UPS’ quarterly earnings per share (excluding 5 cents from non-recurring items) of $1.07 beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.04 but declined 28.2% year over year. Revenues of $21.2 billion surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $21 billion but decreased 1.6% year over year.
Given this backdrop, let’s take a closer look at how UNP and UPS are placed now and which stock appears to be the smarter pick currently.
The Case for UNP
The year-over-year increase in Union Pacific’s operating revenues in the March quarter was driven by core pricing gains, fuel surcharge revenues and business mix despite carrying less freight than a year ago.
Freight revenues increased 4%. Excluding fuel surcharge, the metric grew 3%. The company's adjusted operating ratio (operating expenses as a % of revenues) improved 80 basis points from a year ago to 59.9%. Overall volume declined 1% in the March quarter, mainly due to a 9% slump in premium traffic, which includes intermodal and automotive business.
Locomotive productivity increased 6% to 144 gross ton-miles per horsepower day. Fuel consumption rate improved 4% to 1.064. Workforce productivity increased 7% to 1,163 car miles per employee. The railroad also excelled in terms of safety, with train accidents and employee injury rates improving.
The recovery in the freight scenario is a huge positive for railroads like Union Pacific. Highlighting improving freight demand, the Cass Freight Shipments Index gained 3% month-to-month in March 2026. At Union Pacific, freight revenues account for most (94.8% in the first quarter of 2026) of the top line.
The company reaffirmed its 2026 outlook. With respect to earnings per share, the railroad still expects to attain the three-year CAGR target of high-single digit to low-double digit growth through 2027. UNP further anticipates operating ratio improvement. Capital expenditure is expected to be approximately $3.3 billion. The company aims to continue generating strong cash while increasing annual dividend payouts.
The earnings beat by UNP in the first quarter of 2026 was its third bottom-line outperformance in the last four quarters. The railroad operator’s earnings missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate in the other quarter. The average beat is 2.3%.
The Case for UPS
Despite reporting better-than-expected earnings and revenues in the first quarter of 2026, UPS’ shares fell after the results on April 28. The decline was primarily due to management’s warning that elevated fuel prices due to the Iran war could eventually hurt demand.
For the second quarter of 2026, UPS expects the U.S. Domestic segment’s revenues to be up low single digits and operating margin to be between 7.5% and 8.5%. Revenue growth in the International segment for the June quarter is anticipated in the low single digits year over year, driven by a solid increase in revenue per piece. Operating margin in the International segment is expected in the 13-14% band. In the Supply Chain Solutions segment, second-quarter revenues are expected to be up low single digits year over year and operating margin between 9.5% and 10.5%.
For the full-year 2026, UPS expects the U.S. Domestic segment’s revenues as well as adjusted operating margin to be flat year over year. Revenue growth in the International segment for 2026 is anticipated in the low single digits year over year. Operating margin in the International segment is expected to be in the mid-teens. In the Supply Chain Solutions segment, full-year revenues are expected to be up in the high single digits, which includes revenues from UPS’ Andlauer acquisition and operating margin in the low double digits.
The parcel delivery company still expects consolidated revenues of approximately $89.7 billion. Adjusted operating margin is still expected to be around 9.6%. Capital expenditures are estimated to be around $3 billion, with dividend payments expected to be around $5.4 billion (subject to board approval). The effective tax rate is expected to be around 23%.
The earnings beat by UPS in the first quarter of 2026 was its third bottom-line outperformance in the last four quarters. The company’s earnings missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate in the other quarter. The average beat is 10.6%.

Shares of UNP have gained in double digits over the past six months. UPS’ shares have not performed well compared with UNP, gaining in the single digits in the same time frame.

Union Pacific’s cost-cutting efforts, improving freight demand scenario and shareholder-friendly approach justify its premium valuation. While United Parcel Service's long-term promise remains intact, its near-term outlook remains somewhat uneven.
While UPS is largely supported by increased focus on healthcare revenues and efficiencies driven by artificial intelligence, we note that the strategy shift by the shipping giant has resulted in a significant drop in average daily volumes in the first quarter of 2026.
Owing to the strategic shift, UPS has not increased the quarterly dividend this year, freezing it at $1.64 per quarter ($6.56 annually). UNP’s stronger share price performance also indicates that its cost-cutting efforts are translating into tangible benefits. Based on our analysis, UNP appears to be the more attractive option at present, even though both stocks currently carry a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).

Joby Aviation (NYSE: JOBY) is the front-runner among Western companies to launch commercial electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) operations in Dubai this year, in partnership with its investor, Uber Technologies. Its rival, Archer Aviation (NYSE: ACHR), also plans to launch in Abu Dhabi in 2026.
Although both events are at risk amid conflict in the region, they still symbolize the beginning of a new era of eVTOL travel. Here's what you need to know about investing in the sector.

The eVTOL market is highly competitive
While Joby and Archer capture most of the attention due to their progress toward Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification and upcoming commercial launches, there are plenty of ways to invest in the sector. For example, the U.K.'s Vertical Aerospace (NYSE: EVTL) is seeking certification from the U.K.'s Civil Aviation Authority and European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) in 2028, with FAA certification to follow.
China's eHang (NASDAQ: EH) has recently launched commercial services in China. Beta Technologies (NYSE: BETA) is developing an electric conventional takeoff and landing (eCTOL) system that will use standard runways and then an eVTOL, both for commercial use, including for cargo customers like UPS.
Interestingly, Beta is selling propulsion systems to Brazil's Embraer-backed Eve (NYSE: EVEX). Meanwhile, Embraer isn't the only major aircraft manufacturer active in the eVTOL niche, as Boeing is investing heavily in its subsidiary, Wisk, an eVTOL company focused on autonomous eVTOL.
Business models differ dramatically
This is where it gets a bit complicated, and also fascinating, because each company appears to have its own business model. Joby is probably the most ambitious because it's pursuing a vertically integrated transportation-as-a-service (TaaS) model. Not only is it developing its own technology, with manufacturing help from key investor Toyota, but it's also creating its own transportation services company through its partnership with Uber.
As such, it's hugely impressive that Joby is leading the certification race and is ahead of rivals like Archer and Vertical, which are primarily original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) relying on established aerospace companies (Honeywell, etc.) for component supplies, such as propulsion systems. In theory, Archer and Vertical should be ahead due to these relationships, but Joby's go-it-alone strategy appears to be working.
That said, it may face intense competition from Boeing's Wisk in a few years. Rather surprisingly, as Boeing is an OEM, it's also developing Wisk as a TaaS company. Still, there's a difference: Wisk aims to cut the cost of the pilot out of its services by developing only autonomous eVTOLs.
Beta is focused on being an OEM company and has customers such as UPS, United Therapeutics, and Air New Zealand. However, it also plans to generate long-term revenue from aftermarket services on its eCTOL and eVTOL and, notably, its electric charging infrastructure, which is based on CCS-1 protocol (making it highly compatible) and is also for use for "all electric aircraft operators," according to its Securities and Exchange Commission filings.
Finally, Embraer's Eve is a fascinating eVTOL company, as its model involves serving as an OEM and leveraging key partners' technologies (for example, Beta, Thales, and BAE Systems), as well as developing an Urban Air Traffic Management system, Vector, which could become the industry standard. In addition, it aims to leverage Embraer's global operations to offer aftermarket maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services to customers.
Which eVTOL stocks to buy?
Clearly, this is a nascent, highly competitive industry, and as you can see, eVTOL stocks have sharply sold off this year. The long-term potential, however, is obvious. Joby probably offers the most upside potential due to its TaaS model and first-mover advantage, but it may need funding to support its growth plans.
Beta probably did its initial public offering at the perfect time (November 2025), and the Wall Street average estimate suggests it will end 2026 with $971 million in net cash and no need to raise capital until it starts generating cash in 2030. Moreover, the combination of reliance on the cargo/logistics market and the opportunity to earn early revenue via the Eve deal and OEM sales makes it an attractive stock for eVTOL investors.

Retail investor buzz surrounding the SpaceX IPO is off the charts -- and rightfully so, with the space economy and artificial intelligence representing some of the largest long-term addressable opportunities.
However, retail investors have a terrible habit of being overzealous with Wall Street's largest IPOs.
This year is shaping up as one of the most consequential in history for initial public offerings (IPOs). Artificial intelligence (AI) large language model developers OpenAI and Anthropic, which both sport estimated valuations in the neighborhood of $1 trillion, are contemplating going public before the year ends. Meanwhile, the largest expected IPO in Wall Street history, SpaceX, is right around the corner.
When SpaceX goes public, presumably in the second half of June, it'll likely command a market cap of $1.75 trillion to $2 trillion. This would make this space infrastructure and AI titan the eighth-largest publicly traded company on U.S. stock exchanges, slotting it ahead of Elon Musk's other trillion-dollar business, electric-vehicle maker Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA).

The hype surrounding SpaceX is palpable – so much so that up to 30% of the company's shares may be set aside for retail investors. Most IPOs portion 5% to 10% of shares for everyday investors.
It's easy to be excited when several of SpaceX's puzzle pieces are growing at a breakneck pace. Space infrastructure and artificial intelligence are two of the largest addressable opportunities over the coming decade. When Musk's company files its registration statement (S-1), we'll get a true feel for just how fast SpaceX is growing.
Retail investors have a terrible habit of being overzealous with Wall Street's largest IPOs
But while SpaceX is drumming up plenty of interest for its historic debut, it's likely also luring potentially millions of retail investors into a costly mistake.
The $75 billion (or more) that SpaceX aims to raise from its IPO would be the most in history by a long shot. The current largest IPO recordholder is Saudi Aramco, which raised $29.4 billion from its overseas debut in December 2019.
In terms of capital raises, U.S. investors have witnessed a handful of big-time debuts since 1999, including Facebook (now Meta Platforms), Alibaba Group, Visa, General Motors, and United Parcel Service. With the exception of China's largest e-commerce and cloud infrastructure services platform, Alibaba, these other businesses are household names, and they generated a mountain of retail investor buzz before their respective IPOs.
Something else most of these companies have in common is that they sputtered out of the gate. Although Visa rallied 23% in the six months following its public debut, Meta, Alibaba, General Motors, UPS, and even Saudi Aramco, tumbled by 38%, 9%, 8%, 11%, and 15%, respectively, in the six months following their IPOs.
History has shown that investors have a terrible habit of being overzealous with brand-name IPOs, and there's a high probability this will be the case with SpaceX.

Putting aside the well-known long-term growth prospects for the space economy and AI, SpaceX is trading at a triple-digit (and likely unsustainable) price-to-sales ratio, based on a January Reuters report that the company generated $15 billion to $16 billion in sales last year.
History also tells us that every game-changing technology and trend endures an early stage bubble-bursting event. If the space economy and AI follow the same pattern other next-big-thing trends have for more than three decades, SpaceX's valuation premium would be hard to justify.
Don't make the costly mistake of piling into SpaceX stock on day one. If you want exposure to the SpaceX growth story, history suggests you be patient and wait for the early overzealousness to wear off.

SpaceX IPO: Potentially Millions of Retail Investors Will Make This Costly Mistake -- Don't Be One of Them

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Tuesday closed down -0.49%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) closed down -0.05%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed down -1.01%. June E-mini S&P futures (ESM26) fell -0.46%, and June E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQM26) fell -0.94%.
Stock indexes settled lower on Tuesday, led by losses in technology stocks amid concerns that the massive investment in artificial intelligence will not pay off. The Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI recently failed to meet its goals for new users and sales, undercutting the shares of OpenAI partners and AI infrastructure stocks, including Nvidia, Oracle, Advanced Micro Devices, and CoreWeave.

On the positive side, Coca-Cola rose more than +3% to limit losses in the Dow Jones Industrials after reporting stronger-than-expected Q1 net revenue.
Stocks bounced from their worst levels on Tuesday amid better-than-expected US economic news. The Conference Board Apr consumer confidence index unexpectedly rose +0.6 to a 4-month high of 92.8, stronger than expectations of a decline to 89.0. Also, the Apr Richmond Fed manufacturing survey rose +3 to a 14-month high of 3, stronger than expectations of 1. In addition, the Feb S&P composite-20 home price index rose +0.90% y/y, weaker than expectations of +1.12% y/y and the smallest pace of increase in more than 2.5 years.
Soaring crude oil prices are boosting inflation expectations, pushing bond yields higher, and weighing on stocks. WTI crude oil jumped to a 2-week high on Tuesday after the New York Times reported that President Trump is not satisfied with Iran’s latest proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the war, which includes postponing nuclear negotiations. Mr. Trump has said any deal must include agreements to curb Iran’s nuclear activities. The 10-year T-note yield climbed to a 3-week high of 4.38% on Tuesday. The 2-day FOMC meeting began on Tuesday and concludes on Wednesday, and the Fed is expected to keep monetary policy unchanged.
WTI crude oil prices (CLM26) rose by more than +3% on Tuesday as the US and Iran are locked in a battle for control of the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides blocking the waterway to gain leverage during an extended ceasefire. The Strait of Hormuz remains essentially closed, threatening to deepen the global energy crisis. The ongoing blockade could exacerbate global oil and fuel shortages, as about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transits through the strait. Goldman Sachs estimates that crude output in the Persian Gulf has been curtailed by about 14.5 million bpd, or more than 50%, so far in April, and that the current disruption has drawn down nearly 500 million bbl from global crude stockpiles, which could hit a billion bbl by June.
Kevin Warsh now appears to be on a glide path toward Senate approval as the new Fed Chair after Senator Thom Tillis said on Sunday that he dropped his opposition to the nomination. Mr. Tillis dropped his opposition after the US Justice Department dropped its criminal investigation into the Fed’s overspending on the renovation of its building, in line with Mr. Tillis’ demand. Mr. Tillis views the investigation into Fed Chair Powell as an attempt to force the Fed to cut interest rates. The Senate Banking Committee is due to vote on Mr. Warsh’s appointment this Wednesday and then send the nomination to the full Senate for a vote.
The markets are discounting a 0% chance for a +25 bp FOMC rate hike at the Tue-Wed policy meeting. The markets are expecting the FOMC to leave policy unchanged this week as it awaits further developments in oil prices and inflation.
Earnings season ramps up this week with several Magnificent Seven technology stocks reporting. Earnings results thus far have been supportive of stocks. As of Tuesday, 80% of the 172 S&P 500 companies that reported Q1 earnings have beaten estimates. Q1 S&P 500 earnings are projected to climb +12% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Stripping out the technology sector, Q1 earnings are projected to increase around +3%, the weakest in two years.
Overseas stock markets settled lower on Tuesday. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell to a 2.5-week low and closed down -0.41%. China's Shanghai Composite closed down -0.19%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 closed down -1.02%.
Interest Rates
June 10-year T-notes (ZNM6) on Tuesday closed down -5.5 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield rose +1.0 bp to 4.350%. June T-notes fell to a 3-week low on Tuesday, and the 10-year T-note yield rose to a 3-week high of 4.378%. Tuesday’s +3% jump in WTI crude oil prices boosted inflation expectations and weighed on T-notes. The 10-year breakeven inflation rate rose to a 14-month high of 2.472% on Tuesday. Also, better-than-expected US economic news on Tuesday, including Apr consumer confidence and the Apr Richmond Fed manufacturing survey, was bearish for T-note prices.
T-notes recovered from their worst level on Tuesday amid strong demand for the Treasury’s $44 billion auction of 7-year T-notes that had a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.51, above the 10-auction average of 2.50.
European government bond yields moved higher on Tuesday. The 10-year German bund yield rose to a 2-week high of 3.086% and finished up +3.4 bp to 3.067%. The 10-year UK gilt yield climbed to a 1-month high of 5.028% and finished up +3.4 bp to 5.006%.
The ECB's Mar 1-year CPI expectations rate rose to 4.0% from 2.5% in Feb, stronger than expectations of 2.8% and the highest figure in nearly 2.5 years. The Mar 3-year CPI expectations rate rose to 3.0% from 2.5% in Feb, stronger than expectations of 2.6% and the highest figure in three years.
Swaps are discounting an 11% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on Thursday.
US Stock Movers
AI infrastructure stocks and OpenAI partners retreated on Tuesday after the Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI recently missed its own revenue and new-user targets. ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) closed down more than -7% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100, and Applied Digital (APLD), Applied Materials (AMAT), Sandisk (SNDK), CoreWeave (CRWV), and Vertiv Holdings (VRT) closed down more than -5%. Also, Broadcom (AVGO), Oracle (ORCL), and KLA Corp (KLAC) closed down more than -4%, and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Micron Technology (MU), Marvell Technology (MRVL), ASML Holding NV (ASML), Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX), and Lam Research (LRCX) closed down more than -3%. In addition, GE Vernova (GEV) and Western Digital (WDC) closed down more than -2%.
Mining stocks fell on Tuesday, amid the sell-off in gold, silver, and copper prices. Stocks Fall on AI Jitters and Surging Crude Oil Prices

United Parcel Service, Inc. (UPS) reported solid first-quarter 2026 results, wherein the company’s earnings and revenues surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate.
Quarterly earnings per share (excluding 5 cents from non-recurring items) of $1.07 beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.04 but declined 28.2% year over year. Revenues of $21.2 billion surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $21 billion but decreased 1.6% year over year.

Other Aspects of Q1 Earnings Report
U.S. Domestic Package revenues of $14.1 billion (above our estimate of $13.8 billion) decreased 2.3% year over year, owing to an expected decline in volume. Revenue per piece grew 8.3% year over year. Segmental operating profit (adjusted) fell 44.1% year over year to $565 million. The adjusted operating margin for the segment was 4%.
Revenues in the International Package division totaled $4.54 billion (above our estimate of $4.38 billion), which increased 3.8% year over year, owing to a 10.7% increase in revenue per piece. Segmental operating profit (adjusted) totaled $551 million, down 15.7% year over year. The adjusted operating margin for the segment was 12.1%.
Supply Chain Solutions’ revenues of $2.53 billion (below our estimate of $2.81 billion) decreased 6.5% year over year, owing to a decline in volume in the Mail Innovations business. Operating profit (on an adjusted basis) rose more than 100% year over year to $206 million. The adjusted operating margin for the segment was 8.1%.
The overall adjusted operating margin was 6.2%.
UPS’ 2026 Outlook Reaffirmed
Management has reinstated full-year 2026 sales guidance, projecting revenues of approximately $89.7 billion, above the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $89.3 billion as well as the 2025 reported figure of $88.7 billion.
Adjusted operating margin is still expected to be around 9.6%. Capital expenditures are estimated to be around $3 billion, with dividend payments expected to be around $5.4 billion (subject to board approval). The effective tax rate is expected to be around 23%.

Q1 Performances of Other Transportation Companies
Delta Air Lines (DAL) reported first-quarter 2026 earnings (excluding $1.08 from non-recurring items) of 64 cents per share, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 61 cents. Earnings increased 39.1% on a year-over-year basis due to high labor costs. Adjusted revenues in the March-end quarter were $14.2 billion, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $14 billion and increasing on a year-over-year basis.
United Airlines Holdings, Inc. (UAL) reported solid first-quarter 2026 results wherein the company’s earnings and revenues beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate and improved on a year-over-year basis.
UAL's first-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings per share (EPS) (excluding 95 cents from non-recurring items) of $1.19 surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.08 and increased 30.8% on a year-over-year basis. The reported figure lies within the guided range of $1.00-$1.50.
Operating revenues of $14.6 billion outpaced the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $14.3 billion and increased 10.5% year over year. Passenger revenues (which accounted for 90.1% of the top line) increased 11% year over year to $13.1 billion. UAL flights transported 42,486 passengers in the first quarter, up 4.1% year over year.
Cargo revenues fell 1.6% year over year to $422 million. Revenues from other sources rose 10.5% year over year to $1.02 billion.
J.B. Hunt Transport Services JBHT posted first-quarter 2026 earnings per share of $1.49, up 27% from $1.17 a year ago. The result topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate by $0.04, a 2.8% surprise.
Operating revenues totaled $3.06 billion, rising 4.6% year over year. Revenues beat the consensus mark of $2.94 billion, resulting in a 3.9% surprise, as demand proved resilient across several service offerings, led by Intermodal volume growth and higher revenue per load in select highway-related businesses.

UPS Q1 Earnings & Revenues Surpass Estimates, Down Year Over Year

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) today is down -0.66%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) is up +0.03%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) is down -1.30%. June E-mini S&P futures (ESM26) are down -0.63%, and June E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQM26) are down -1.27%.
Stock indexes are under pressure today, led by losses in technology stocks amid concerns that the massive investment in artificial intelligence will not pay off. The Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI recently failed to meet its goals for new users and sales, undercutting the shares of OpenAI partners and AI infrastructure stocks, including Nvidia, Oracle, Advanced Micro Devices, and CoreWeave.

On the positive side, Coca-Cola is up more than +6% to keep the Dow Jones Industrials in positive territory after reporting stronger-than-expected Q1 net revenue.
Also, better-than-expected US economic news today is supportive of stocks. The Conference Board Apr consumer confidence index unexpectedly rose +0.6 to a 4-month high of 92.8, stronger than expectations of a decline to 89.0. Also, the Apr Richmond Fed manufacturing survey rose +3 to a 14-month high of 3, stronger than expectations of 1. In addition, the Feb S&P composite-20 home price index rose +0.90% y/y, weaker than expectations of +1.12% y/y and the smallest pace of increase in more than 2.5 years.
Soaring crude oil prices are also boosting inflation expectations, pushing bond yields higher and weighing on stocks. WTI crude oil jumped to a 2-week high today after the New York Times reported that President Trump is not satisfied with Iran’s latest proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the war, which includes postponing nuclear negotiations. Mr. Trump has said any deal must include agreements to curb Iran’s nuclear activities. The 10-year T-note yield climbed to a 3-week high of 4.38% today ahead of the start of the 2-day FOMC meeting, where the Fed is expected to keep monetary policy unchanged.
WTI crude oil prices (CLM26) are up by more than +3% today as the US and Iran are locked in a battle for control of the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides blocking the waterway to gain leverage during an extended ceasefire. The Strait of Hormuz remains essentially closed, threatening to deepen the global energy crisis. The ongoing blockade could exacerbate global oil and fuel shortages, as about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transits through the strait. Goldman Sachs estimates that crude output in the Persian Gulf has been curtailed by about 14.5 million bpd, or more than 50%, so far in April, and that the current disruption has drawn down nearly 500 million bbl from global crude stockpiles, which could hit a billion bbl by June.
Kevin Warsh now appears to be on a glide path toward Senate approval as the new Fed Chair after Senator Thom Tillis said on Sunday that he dropped his opposition to the nomination. Mr. Tillis dropped his opposition after the US Justice Department dropped its criminal investigation into the Fed’s overspending on the renovation of its building, in line with Mr. Tillis’ demand. Mr. Tillis views the investigation into Fed Chair Powell as an attempt to force the Fed to cut interest rates. The Senate Banking Committee is due to vote on Mr. Warsh’s appointment this Wednesday and then send the nomination to the full Senate for a vote.
The markets are discounting a 0% chance for a +25 bp FOMC rate hike at the Tue-Wed policy meeting. The markets are expecting the FOMC to leave policy unchanged this week as it awaits further developments in oil prices and inflation.
Earnings season ramps up this week with several Magnificent Seven technology stocks reporting. Earnings results thus far have been supportive of stocks. As of today, 80% of the 150 S&P 500 companies that reported Q1 earnings have beaten estimates. Q1 S&P 500 earnings are projected to climb +12% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Stripping out the technology sector, Q1 earnings are projected to increase around +3%, the weakest in two years.
Overseas stock markets are lower today. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell to a 2.5-week low and is down -0.26%. China's Shanghai Composite closed down -0.19%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 closed down -1.02%.
Interest Rates
June 10-year T-notes (ZNM6) today are down -8 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is up +2.8 bp to 4.368%. June T-notes fell to a 3-week low today, and the 10-year T-note yield rose to a 3-week high of 4.378%. Today’s +3% jump in WTI crude oil prices is boosting inflation expectations and weighing on T-notes. The 10-year breakeven inflation rate rose to a 14-month high of 2.472% today. Also, better-than-expected US economic news today on Apr consumer confidence and the Apr Richmond Fed manufacturing survey were bearish for T-note prices. In addition, supply pressures are undercutting T-note prices, as the Treasury will auction $30 billion of 2-year floating rate notes and $44 billion of 7-year T-notes later today.
European government bond yields are moving higher today. The 10-year German bund yield rose to a 2-week high of 3.086% and is up +4.0 bp to 3.073%. The 10-year UK gilt yield climbed to a 1-month high of 5.028% and is up +4.4 bp to 5.016%.
The ECB's Mar 1-year CPI expectations rate rose to 4.0% from 2.5% in Feb, stronger than expectations of 2.8% and the highest figure in nearly 2.5 years. The Mar 3-year CPI expectations rate rose to 3.0% from 2.5% in Feb, stronger than expectations of 2.6% and the highest figure in three years.
Swaps are discounting a 13% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on Thursday.

Also, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Applied Materials (AMAT), Micron Technology (MU), CoreWeave (CRWV), GE Vernova (GEV), and Lam Research (LRCX) are down more than -5%, and Western Digital (WDC), ASML Holding NV (ASML), Marvell Technology (MRVL), Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX), Broadcom (AVGO), Oracle (ORCL), and KLA Corp (KLAC) are down more than -4%. In addition, Nvidia (NVDA) is down more than -3% to lead losers in the Dow Jones Industrials.

Stripping out the technology sector, Q1 earnings are projected to increase around +3%, the weakest in two years.
Overseas stock markets are lower today. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell to a 2.5-week low and is down -0.35%. China's Shanghai Composite closed down -0.19%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 closed down -1.02%.
Interest Rates
June 10-year T-notes (ZNM6) today are down -7 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is up +2.2 bp to 4.362%. June T-notes fell to a 3-week low today, and the 10-year T-note yield rose to a 3-week high of 4.378%. Today’s +3% jump in WTI crude oil prices is boosting inflation expectations and weighing on T-notes. The 10-year breakeven inflation rate rose to a 14-month high of 2.472% today. Also, supply pressures are undercutting T-note prices, as the Treasury will auction $30 billion of 2-year floating rate notes and $44 billion of 7-year T-notes later today.
European government bond yields are moving higher today. The 10-year German bund yield rose to a 2-week high of 3.086% and is up +4.3 bp to 3.076%. The 10-year UK gilt yield climbed to a 1-month high of 5.028% and is up +3.8 bp to 5.010%.
The ECB's Mar 1-year CPI expectations rate rose to 4.0% from 2.5% in Feb, stronger than expectations of 2.8% and the highest figure in nearly 2.5 years. The Mar 3-year CPI expectations rate rose to 3.0% from 2.5% in Feb, stronger than expectations of 2.6% and the highest figure in three years.
Swaps are discounting a 13% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on Thursday.
US Stock Movers
AI infrastructure stocks and OpenAI partners are retreating today after the Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI recently missed its own revenue and new-user targets. ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) is down more than -6% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100, and Applied Materials (AMAT) is down more than -5%. Also, Lam Research and KLA Corp (KLAC) are down more than -4%, and Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Broadcom (AVGO), Western Digital (WDC), ASML Holding NV (ASML), Marvell Technology (MRVL), Oracle (ORCL), and CoreWeave (CRWV) are down more than -3%. In addition, Nvidia (NVDA) is down more than -2% to lead losers in the Dow Jones Industrials, and Vertiv Holdings (VRT), Qualcomm (QCOM), Applied Digital (APLD), and GE Vernova (GEV) are down more than -2%.
Rambus (RMBS) is down more than -17% after reporting Q1 EPS of 55 cents, weaker than the consensus of 65 cents.
Alexandria Real Estate Equities (ARE) is down more than -13% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q1 revenue of $671.0 million, weaker than the consensus of $692.7 million.
Spotify Technology SA (SPOT) is down more than -10% after reporting Q1 operating income of $737 million, below the consensus of $787 million.
Pentair Plc (PNR) is down more than -9% after forecasting Q2 adjusted EPS of $1.47 to $1.50, below the consensus of $1.50.
Qiagen NV (QGEN) is down more than -7% after forecasting full-year CER net sales of up +1% to +2%, well below the consensus of +4.62%.
Corning (GLW) is down more than -5% after forecasting Q2 core EPS of 73 cents to 77 cents, the midpoint below the consensus of 76 cents.
United Parcel Service (UPS) is down more than -4% after leaving its full-year financial guidance unchanged despite reporting better-than-expected Q1 sales and profit.
Centene (CNC) is up more than +6% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q1 revenue of $49.94 billion, above the consensus of $47.41 billion, and raising its full-year revenue forecast to $187.5 billion to $191.5 billion from $186.5 billion to $190.5 billion, the midpoint above the consensus of $188.79 billion.
Coca-Cola (KO) is up more than +5% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials after reporting Q1 net revenue of $12.50 billion, better than the consensus of $12.25 billion.
LendingClub (LC) is up more than +5% after reporting Q1 new originations of $2.67 billion, stronger than the consensus of $2.63 billion.
Dynatrace (DT) is up more than +4% after the Wall Street Journal reported that Starboard Value LP took a stake in the company and is pushing the company to better capitalize on the shift to AI.
Crane Co. (CR) is up more than +1% after reporting Q1 net sales of $696.4 million, better than the consensus of $667.3 million.
Nucor (NUE) is up more than +1% after reporting Q1 net sales of $9.50 billion, stronger than the consensus of $8.87 billion.

Stocks Pressured by AI Fears and Soaring Crude Oil Prices

Pre-markets are somewhat reversed this morning: after closing yesterday with the Dow closing in the red slightly and the Nasdaq and S&P 500 in the green, at this hour the Dow is up but the Nasdaq, S&P 500 and small-cap Russell 2000 are down. Oil prices are up again at this hour, sending futures off their early-morning highs.
The Strait of Hormuz remains closed at this hour, likely to remain so, as the latest proposal to open the major shipping channel appears to not find favor with the Trump administration. The war in Iran has already gone on weeks longer than originally anticipated, with no realistic end in sight at this time.
A Wall Street Journal article this morning on OpenAI having missed its quarterly targets is especially hitting the tech-heavy Nasdaq harder, sending the index down -319 points, -1.16%. The S&P 500 and the Russell 2000 are both -0.60% currently, while the blue-chip Dow is up +58 points, +0.12% at this hour.
Case-Shiller Home Prices Slowed in February
Scoring one for lower inflation metrics (albeit in the rearview mirror), the Case-Shiller Home Price Index for February came in at +0.9% on the 20-city composite, down 30 basis points (bps) month over month. Higher mortgage rates for the month put downward pressure on pricing, and real home price returns have now been negative (rising slower than the rate of inflation) for now nine-straight months.
The top-performing cities were once again Chicago (+5.0%) and New York (4.7%), followed by Cleveland (+4.2%). Denver was the weakest market for the month, -2.2%, after several months of Tampa being the weakest market for home price growth. Los Angeles and Washington DC were also lower for the month.
Q1 Earnings at a Glance: BP, GM, KO & More
BP BP shares are up following Q1 results that doubled earnings for the oil supermajor, a direct result of the war in Iran. Earnings of $1.24 per share outpaced the $0.91 in the Zacks consensus, leading to a +36.26% earnings surprise.
General Motors GM had an even better quarter on its bottom line: earnings of $3.70 per share zoomed ahead of the $2.61 consensus by +41.76%. A $500 million tariff refund has bolstered the U.S.’s top automaker, but shares are down -1.23% at this hour ahead of the open.
Coca-Cola KO shares are up +3.45% currently, after outperforming expectations on its bottom line by a solid nickel: 86 cents peer share versus 81 in the Zacks consensus, with the company’s strongest sales growth in nearly two years.
UPS UPS delivered a modest 3-cent earnings beat this morning to $1.07 per share, for a +2.88% earnings surprise. Yet declining volume domestically is weighing on the stock, which is -6% at this hour in pre-market trading.
Spotify SPOT surpassed earnings estimates this morning — $4.04 per share versus $3.72 anticipated — but shares are falling -11% ahead of the opening bell after missing full-year guidance, deepening from its -14% selloff year to date.
