Shares of UPS (NYSE: UPS) have been on a downward spiral, losing nearly a third of their value in the last year and over 60% from their early 2022 peak. The sharp decline has driven up its dividend yield to 7.5%, far above the S&P 500's 1.2% and rival FedEx's 2.4%.

A look at what's driving the downdraft in UPS' stock price
UPS has been battling a couple of notable headwinds over the past few years. It's dealing with a challenging global economic environment due to ever-evolving trade policies. Tariffs are increasing international shipping costs, impacting the company's volumes. Additionally, the company is scaling back its relationship with its top customer, Amazon, to focus on more profitable business segments. The e-commerce giant provided 11% of the company's revenue in 2024 and around a quarter of its volumes. UPS wants to reduce its Amazon-related shipping volumes by more than 50% by the second half of next year.
These headwinds have weakened UPS's recent financial performance. Second-quarter revenue fell by nearly 3% to $21.2 billion, while adjusted earnings dropped 13% to $1.55 per share. This hit its cash flow. UPS generated $2.7 billion in cash flow from operations and $742 million in free cash flow in the first half of this year, both notably lower than last year's figures ($5.3 billion in operating cash flows and nearly $3.4 billion in free cash flow).
The drop in free cash flow threatens the sustainability of the dividend. UPS has paid $2.7 billion in dividends in the first six months of this year, $2 billion more than its free cash flow over the period. The company also repurchased $1 billion of stock earlier this year. It made up for the shortfall by taking on additional debt. Long-term debt and finance leases rose from $19.5 billion at last year's end to $23.8 billion. While the company has a more than $6 billion cash balance and strong A2/A bond ratings, funding the dividend with debt is unsustainable over the long term.
The turnaround plan
UPS has launched a two-pronged strategy to reconfigure its business to better align with its future Amazon volumes while growing higher-margin operations, such as healthcare logistics. As part of that plan, UPS aims to deliver $3.5 billion of annual cost savings by the end of this year. It has closed several buildings, reduced its headcount, and launched other cost-saving initiatives. The company expects to achieve the bulk of those cost savings during the second half of this year, positioning it to produce stronger earnings and cash flow in 2026.
Additionally, the company is investing capital to grow its higher-margin operations, notably healthcare logistics. UPS has accelerated the expansion of this platform through acquisitions. Last year, it acquired Frigo-Trans and BPL to bolster its cold-chain logistics capabilities in Europe. Meanwhile, it agreed to buy Andlauer Healthcare Group earlier this year for $1.6 billion to bolster its North American healthcare logistics platform.
These moves to reduce costs and grow its higher-margin businesses position UPS to become a more profitable company in the future. That would seemingly enhance its ability to continue paying the dividend.
What does all this mean for the dividend?
The key concern is whether UPS can maintain its current dividend during its ongoing transformation. On the one hand, the company has regularly reaffirmed its commitment to the dividend. Its most recent quarterly dividend announcement press release, UPS stated: "Commitment to the dividend is one of UPS's core principles and a hallmark of the company's financial strength. UPS has either maintained or increased its dividend each year since going public in 1999." It further reinforced its commitment to the payout earlier this year by increasing the quarterly payment by $0.01 per share to $1.64 per share.
However, relying on the balance sheet to fund dividends is not a viable long-term solution. If UPS's turnaround plan drags on or is less effective than expected, management may need to reduce the dividend to align the payout with available free cash flow and protect the company's financial health. This makes the current dividend vulnerable if the company doesn't show financial improvements soon.
The dividend might be too good to be true
UPS continues to prioritize its dividend while navigating operational challenges. While its strong balance sheet allows it to do so, the wide gap between free cash flow and its dividend outlay poses a considerable risk. If its turnaround efforts fail to deliver, a dividend cut becomes increasingly likely. Given this risk, income-focused investors should view the current yield with caution, as the payout may not be sustainable throughout the company's turnaround. The stock is best suited for those comfortable with more risk, given the uncertainty surrounding the dividend.

Given this backdrop, let us examine the factors likely to influence UPS’ third-quarter results.
Shipping volumes at UPS are likely to have been hurt by geopolitical uncertainties and high inflation. Uncertainty over tariffs, supply-chain instability and other broader macroeconomic headwinds are likely to hurt results. We believe that more than the financial numbers, it is the guidance that investors will more closely watch.
Labor costs are likely to have been high, hurting United Parcel Service’s bottom-line performance in the September quarter. Faced with these headwinds, the company has been focusing on cutting costs. As part of this exercise, UPS is offering buyouts to delivery drivers for the first time in its 117-year history. UPS’ full-time drivers are eligible for this offer. We expect an update on the same on the conference call.
Apart from the tariff-induced economic uncertainties, UPS’ decision to reduce business with its largest customer, Amazon AMZN, contributed to the decision to trim the workforce. UPS’ management has reached an agreement in principle with Amazon to lower the latter’s volume by more than 50% by June 2026. According to Carol Tome, UPS’ chief executive officer, Amazon was not its most profitable customer.
The De Minimis exemption had expired on Aug. 29. The trade exemption allowed packages containing goods valued at less than $800 to enter the United States without additional taxes. In July, President Trump signed the executive order to eliminate the exemption. Per a recent NBC News report, the accumulation of packages in UPS warehouses has compelled it to discard some shipments due to severe customs bottlenecks.
UPS has been facing customer backlash with allegations that it has been discarding certain international shipments before they reach their intended destinations. An update on that front is also expected on the third-quarter conference call.
Low fuel costs are expected to have aided UPS’ bottom-line performance in the September-end quarter. We expect expenses on fuel to decrease 7.6% from the third-quarter 2024 actuals. Tariff concerns, weakening consumer confidence and production increase by OPEC+ have all contributed to this downward pressure on crude oil.

Moreover, the recent failure of the Estafeta deal represents a setback to UPS’ expansion efforts. UPS cited the inability to satisfy all closing conditions as the reason for the cancellation. Unveiling UPS (UPS) Q3 Outlook: Wall Street Estimates for Key Metrics

UPS continues to face significant challenges in some of its key end markets.
The logistics giant is in the midst of reducing the volume of deliveries it performs for Amazon and taking over some last-mile deliveries previously completed by the Postal Service.
UPS is also facing higher-than-expected personnel costs as fewer employees have left the company than it predicted.
Package delivery giant UPS (NYSE: UPS) is muddling through a difficult period characterized by end-market challenges and self-imposed structural changes to its business. At the same time, however, its stock is down 32%, which has boosted its dividend yield to 7.7%. That offers investors a potential value opportunity that rarely comes around for blue chip stocks. Does all this make the stock a buy before UPS delivers its third-quarter earnings report on Oct. 28?
UPS probably had a difficult third quarter
Management declined to update its full-year guidance in April due to the uncertainty in its end markets created by President Donald Trump's tariffs and other macroeconomic uncertainties. The company chose not to update guidance again in July, citing the volatile macro environment and ongoing uncertainty around tariffs and trade.

"We see a risk for greater variability in SMB [small and medium-sized business] and enterprise volume" in the third quarter, CFO Brian Dykes said on the Q2 earnings call.
In addition, Dykes said the logistics company's profit margins "could be pressured a little more than we thought earlier in the year, even more than the kind of normal seasonality that we have from Q2 to Q3."
That said, management all but promised to give guidance numbers in conjunction with the third-quarter report, with CEO Carol Tome saying that UPS would have "more certainty" on tariffs, peak (referring to the delivery spikes that occur during the holiday season), and "more certainty on costs" by that time.
The latter point deserves a few words, as part of the uncertainty regarding costs stems from its employee attrition rate being lower than expected, resulting in "higher expense than we planned" in the second quarter, according to Tome.
In normal circumstances, a high attrition rate (a measure of how many employees are leaving a company) is not good news, but UPS is in the midst of deliberately reducing its Amazon.com delivery volumes by 50% from the end of 2024 to the middle of 2026, and Amazon deliveries accounted for 11.8% of UPS' revenue in 2024. In that context of lower delivery volumes, UPS would prefer a higher attrition rate for now, but that's not how matters are playing out.
What to expect from UPS in the third quarter
It's hard to see how the issues identified as causes of weakness in the first half could be easily resolved. For example, trade tensions between the U.S. and China have re-escalated recently, and the China-to-U.S. trade route is UPS' most profitable. Moreover, even higher tariffs are likely to impact the small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) that constitute a core and targeted market for UPS.
It's a lot harder for SMBs to quickly change where they source their products from, and dealing with the uncertainties generated by this chaotic trade and tariff landscape is also highly challenging for them. For UPS, all of these pressures are coming as it's scaling back on Amazon deliveries and ramping up its last-mile deliveries through UPS Ground Saver, a service that replaced SurePost at the end of 2024. SurePost was a joint operation under which last-mile deliveries were handled by the U.S. Postal Service.
What's next for UPS
Everything points to Q3 having been another difficult quarter for UPS, and it's reasonable to expect that management will take a knife, or rather a chainsaw, to the initial full-year guidance it gave in January. That guidance called for $89 billion in revenue, an implied operating profit of approximately $9.6 billion, and free cash flow (FCF) of $5.7 billion. However, the current Wall Street consensus (which may prove overly optimistic) calls for $87.5 billion in revenue, $7.8 billion in operating profit, and FCF of $4.6 billion.
Is UPS stock a buy?
The case for buying the stock now is based on the theory that the problems identified above will prove temporary, and that the company's end markets should stabilize as its customers become accustomed to the new high-tariff landscape. Meanwhile, the company can continue to grow its healthcare-client-based revenues and continue to make productivity-enhancing investments in technology (smart facilities, automation, etc.).
It's a compelling case, but it's a difficult one to get behind until management resets investor expectations and potentially cuts its dividend to free up funds, as its free cash flow (FCF) won't cover its dividends at their current level this year. Meanwhile, it will have to adjust to the realities of operating during a period of lower demand for its services.
There's no point in investing on this basis, because there's no guarantee that management will take such actions. However, the precedent has been set in recent years, with the former General Electric and, more recently, 3M adopting this approach. It worked.

Is UPS Stock a Buy Before Oct. 28?

United Parcel Service UPS and Copa Holdings CPA are well-known companies within the Zacks Transportation sector. Both continue to prioritize dividend payments to shareholders despite ongoing economic challenges, demonstrating their commitment to shareholder value.
Dividend-paying stocks provide a reliable and steady income source and typically exhibit lower price volatility. These stocks are considered a secure option for building wealth, as dividend payouts often serve as a buffer against economic instability, such as the current environment.
Copa Holdings, a Latin American carrier, has an impressive record in terms of paying dividends. Last year, Copa Holdings almost doubled its quarterly dividend payout to $1.61 per share (annualized: $6.44) from 82 cents (annualized: $3.28).

Sustainability of UPS’ Dividends in Question, Unlike CPA
No doubt UPS’ most recent dividend hike reflects its shareholder-friendly approach, but questions about the sustainability of the dividend arise. United Parcel Service’s elevated dividend payout ratio (the percentage of net income paid out as dividends) highlights the concerns associated with its ability to maintain dividend payouts over the long term.
We remind investors that in the early 2020s, when UPS’ business was flourishing, driven by exponential e-commerce growth during the peak pandemic period, it made huge dividend payments. Free cash flow has been on a decline since touching a high of $9 billion in 2022.
Currently, UPS' elevated dividend payout is hurting its operational flexibility, with free cash flow barely covering the dividend. At 2024-end, free cash flow was $6.3 billion, not much above its dividend payments of $5.4 billion. United Parcel Service expects to make dividend payments of around $5.5 billion in 2025. On the other hand, CPA’s much lower dividend payout ratio implies that concerns associated with its ability to maintain dividend payouts over the long term are absent.
While we have considered the dividend-paying abilities of both the transportation stocks, let us delve deep to compare other relevant metrics to determine which of UPS and CPA has stronger upside potential.
Price Performance of CPA and UPS
CPA has navigated the recent tariff-induced stock market volatility well, registering a 44.8% year-to-date gain, while UPS stock has performed miserably in 2025 so far, declining in double digits.

UPS’ subdued stock performance is primarily attributed to revenue weakness, as ongoing geopolitical tensions and the still high inflation continue to weigh on consumer sentiment and dampen growth prospects. The soft demand environment has led to a reduction in shipping volumes.
In contrast, Copa Holdings’ strong performance is supported by robust air travel demand. Despite economic uncertainties and currency-related challenges, Copa Holdings has maintained steady traffic growth. With passenger volumes expected to stay elevated, we project a 4.1% year-over-year increase in passenger revenues for 2025.
Elements such as regional economic growth, effective adaptation to market trends and a focus on innovation have enabled Copa Holdings to maintain operating margins more than 20%, positioning it among the most profitable airlines globally. Management anticipates closing 2025 with an adjusted operating margin in the range of 21-23%. Our forecast of 22.5% is toward the upper end of this guidance.
How Does the Zacks Consensus Estimate Compare for CPA & UPS?
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for CPA’s 2025 and 2026 sales implies a year-over-year increase of 4.7% and 8.5%, respectively. The consensus mark for CPA’s 2025 EPS indicates a 13.5% year-over-year rise. The consensus mark for 2026 EPS indicates a 9.5% year-over-year increase. Moreover, the EPS estimate for 2026 has been trending northward over the past 60 days. The same for the current year has been revised marginally downward at the same time.

The Zacks Consensus Estimate for UPS’ 2025 sales estimate implies a 4% year-over-year decrease, while the same for 2026 implies a 0.6% increase. The consensus mark for UPS’ 2025 EPS indicates a 16.3% year-over-year decrease. The same for 2026 implies a 13% year-over-year increase. The EPS estimates for 2025 and 2026 have been trending significantly southward over the past 60 days, unlike CPA.

Conclusion
Agreed that both stocks focus on paying dividends, but CPA’s lower dividend payout ratio puts to rest concerns about dividend sustainability, unlike UPS. CPA’s better price performance, favorable earnings estimate revisions highlight the fact that upbeat air travel demand is serving it well.
Given our analysis, CPA clearly emerges as the winner and has an edge over UPS now.
