Autonomous Vehicles Hit an Inflection Point; GPT-5 Is Here

Lucid Group, Inc. LCID shares have been trending lower over the past month. Shares of the electric vehicle (EV) startup have plunged 22.7% over the past month, underperforming the Zacks Automotive - Domestic industry’s growth of 0.8%.
Lucid has also underperformed industry peers, including Rivian Automotive, Inc. RIVN and Tesla, Inc. TSLA. Rivian’s shares have lost 10.7%, while Tesla’s shares have returned 0.6%.

LCID’s Q2 Results
Lucid reported a quarterly loss of 28 cents per share in the second quarter of 2025, narrower than the loss of 29 cents per share incurred in the year-ago period. It posted revenues of $259.4 million in the quarter, which rose from $201 million posted in the year-ago period.
The automaker delivered 3,309 vehicles in the second quarter of 2025, which rose 38% year over year, marking its sixth consecutive quarter of record deliveries. However, in the second quarter of 2025, Lucid’s rivals, Rivian and Tesla, reported a year-over-year decline in deliveries. Rivian delivered 10,661 vehicles, down from 13,790 units in the same period last year, marking two consecutive quarters of year-over-year decline, while Tesla recorded a 13.4% decline in deliveries.
Factors Favoring Lucid’s Outlook
Lucid expects deliveries to ramp up throughout 2027, driven by the production of the midsize platform scheduled to begin in late 2026. The midsize platform, which is designed to underpin a more affordable line of vehicles compared to its luxury-centric models like the Air and Gravity, presents a key opportunity for the company to expand its addressable market.
The company is actively pursuing partnerships that go beyond selling or licensing its leading EV technology. On July 17, the company announced a major collaboration with Uber Technologies, Inc. UBER and Nuro to develop a next-generation premium robotaxi for Uber’s ride-hailing platform. The project combines Lucid Gravity’s advanced software-defined vehicle architecture, Nuro’s proven Level 4 autonomous driving system, and Uber’s global network and fleet management to create a fully integrated service designed for comfort, safety and scalability. Per the deal, Uber will invest $300 million in Lucid, which is subject to regulatory approval, and deploy at least 20,000 Lucid Gravity vehicles with Nuro autonomy over six years in multiple global markets, starting late next year.
Encouragingly, LCID reaffirmed its commitment to U.S.-based manufacturing to counter the tariff impact and other geopolitical issues. For instance, a couple of months back, it announced a preliminary agreement with Graphite One to source natural and synthetic graphite domestically starting in 2028, which complemented its existing nonbinding supply agreement signed in April 2024.
Lucid has also partnered with Alaska Energy Metals, Electric Metals USA and RecycLiCo to enhance its supply chain. The company will obtain nickel from Alaska Energy Metals to boost vehicle range, extend battery life and reduce dependence on metals like cobalt. Manganese from Electric Metals will support the development of long-range, high-performance EVs while maintaining battery and passenger safety. Collaboration with RecycLiCo, a critical minerals refining firm, will aid Lucid’s energy storage efforts, promote responsible supply chains and advance the push for increased domestic sourcing of essential materials.
LCID’s Valuation & Estimates
From a valuation standpoint, Lucid appears relatively overvalued. The stock trades at a forward price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of 2.89, above the industry’s 2.68.

Should You Buy the Stock Now?
Despite all the positives, its stretched balance sheet and lowered output forecast are raising concerns. As of June 30, 2025, Lucid had long-term debt of $2.04 billion, which rose from $2 billion as of Dec. 31, 2024. Its long-term debt to capital ratio is 0.63, higher than the industry’s 0.4.
The company lowered its annual production forecast for 2025 from 20,000 units to a range of 18,000-20,000 units amid tariff-related headwind. Also, despite significant cost-cutting and supply chain adjustments, the company still expects tariff-related headwinds to hurt full-year 2025 profit margins.
Given this mix of factors, new investors shouldn’t rush into buying shares; existing shareholders might retain their holdings.

1. MercadoLibre
MercadoLibre is a leader in two rapidly growing industries: e-commerce and fintech. The company operates the largest online marketplace in Latin America where it has so far successfully fended off competition from major companies, including Amazon. MercadoLibre generates strong and growing revenue and profits. In the second quarter, the company's net revenue increased 34% year over year to $6.8 billion. The company's net income of $523 million declined slightly, partly due to currency-exchange rate fluctuations.
Still, most other key metrics for the company went up, including items sold, gross merchandise volume (GMV), unique buyers, and fintech monthly active users (MAUs).
The e-commerce specialist also benefits from a moat from multiple sources, including switching costs and the network effect. In other words, the business is strong. Despite concerns that the economy might falter due to President Trump's tariffs -- something that could impact its financial results -- the stock has performed well this year. Over the next decade, MercadoLibre could benefit from the increasing shift to online retail worldwide, including in Latin America where it operates. Though estimates vary, some analysts see a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15.3% through 2035 for e-commerce.
Perhaps it will grow even faster in areas where MercadoLibre operates. Only one of the company's major markets -- Mexico -- cracks the list of top 10 countries worldwide by e-commerce penetration, with a rate of 14.2%, which significantly trails the leaders at the top of this list. Other regions where MercadoLibre is well established, such as Brazil, are less mature markets than Mexico. In other words, this will be a massive tailwind for MercadoLibre.
Even with mounting competition from players like Shopee, backed by Sea Limited, and potential political instability, MercadoLibre should be fine. The company has faced and overcome these challenges before, and its moat should allow it to remain the leader of the pack. In short, the stock is well positioned to deliver superior returns through 2035.
2. Uber Technologies
Uber has become a household name thanks to its ultrapopular ride-hailing and food-delivery services. The company has achieved the feat of becoming a verb thanks to its brand name being synonymous with ordering a ride on an app, sometimes even if it is on one of its competitors' services.
That's nice enough, but more importantly for investors' purposes, Uber is delivering excellent financial results. In Q2, the company's total trips increased by 18% year over year to 3.3 billion, while its revenue rose to $12.7 billion, 18% higher than the same period last year.
Long gone are the days of unprofitable growth for Uber. On the bottom line, the company reported a net profit of $1.4 billion, up 33% year over year, while its free cash flow increased by 44% year over year to $2.5 billion. Uber is firing on all cylinders. And there is plenty more where that came from.
Member growth should continue, considering Uber ended Q2 with 180 million monthly active consumers. While that grew 15% year over year, it still represents a small fraction of the population in the regions where it does business.
Uber's major markets are still severely underpenetrated, granting the company significant long-term growth potential to bring more people into its ecosystem, increase trips and gross bookings, as well as revenue and earnings. And while competition remains fierce, Uber has built a network effect which, along with its brand name, grants it a moat. Lastly, although the rise of self-driving vehicles could pose a threat, Uber has taken the lead by partnering with Waymo, a leading company in this niche.
With excellent financial results, multiple growth paths, and a moat, the stock could be a major winner over the next decade.

The power of focus
Lyft's geographic and product focus has two clear advantages. First, it avoids the complexity of managing multiple business lines across dozens of countries. Instead of figuring out the regulations, pricing dynamics, and competitive threats in every region of the world, Lyft can concentrate resources on improving service, increasing driver supply, and fine-tuning pricing where it already operates.
Second, this singular focus allows management to dedicate attention and capital to its primary product -- ride-hailing. That's showing up in the numbers. In Q2 2025, Lyft reported a record 26.1 million active riders, a 10% year-over-year increase, and facilitated nearly 235 million rides, up 14% from the prior year. These gains suggest Lyft is successfully attracting and retaining customers and drivers alike, crucial ingredients for long-term viability.
This strategy contrasts with Uber's expansive portfolio, which includes food delivery, freight, and fintech businesses across more than 70 countries. While Uber benefits from diversification, its leadership has to balance competing priorities and capital allocation. Lyft's leaner model is simpler but also potentially more efficient.
Focus reflected in the bottom line
That focus isn't just a talking point -- it's showing up in Lyft's financials. The company reported $4.5 billion in gross bookings for the second quarter of 2025, representing a 12% year-over-year increase. Net income expanded to $40 million, up from $5 million the previous year. Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) grew 26% to $129 million, reflecting steadily improving margins, up from 1.2% in the second quarter of 2023 to 2.9% in the current period.
Importantly, Lyft has turned positive on free cash flow -- a milestone in an industry notorious for cash burn. It first delivered positive trailing-12-month free cash flow (FCF) of $368 million in the second quarter of 2024. Since then, the FCF has increased to $993 million in the second quarter of 2025, representing a nearly threefold increase over the past year.
With a growing free cash flow, Lyft can redirect it into further refining its operations, as well as its targeted expansion strategy -- starting with Europe.
Europe enters the picture with the FreeNow acquisition
Lyft's recent €175 million acquisition of FreeNow, a leading European mobility platform serving 180 cities in nine countries, marks a meaningful step beyond North America. FreeNow's established presence offers Lyft a ready-made platform to test its focused ride-hailing model internationally, expanding its addressable market while maintaining operational discipline.
This move signals Lyft's intention to grow -- but on its terms. Instead of chasing global dominance, Lyft is opting for targeted, capital-efficient expansion that complements its core strengths.
And the benefits could be massive. One thing to note is that Lyft's U.S. riders can now use the Freenow service when traveling to Europe, and vice versa for Freenow riders. Similarly, drivers can now expect more rides, which should improve driver income and enhance loyalty.
What investors should watch in the coming quarters
Of course, focus cuts both ways. The challenge for Lyft will be to grow meaningfully without diluting its focus. That could mean expanding into adjacent mobility services, such as rentals, bikes, or partnerships with autonomous vehicle providers, while still keeping its operations concentrated in North America and now in Europe.
As Lyft executes this strategy, investors should track several key indicators:
Active riders and ride volume: Sustained growth in this area indicates continued demand and engagement in core markets.
Adjusted EBITDA margin: Indicates whether Lyft can sustain and improve profitability as it scales.
Free cash flow: Essential for assessing Lyft's financial health and its ability to invest internally.
Driver supply and retention metrics: Drivers are the backbone of ride-hailing economics. Improvements suggest stronger unit economics.
FreeNow integration: Progress and contribution from the European acquisition will reveal if Lyft's international push is gaining traction.
What does it mean for investors?
Lyft's "stay small, execute well" strategy bucks conventional wisdom in a tech world that is often obsessed with size and diversification. However, in ride-hailing, where operational execution and unit economics are paramount, this approach could prove effective.

Can Lyft Win by Staying Small?

Amazon: 9% of Bill Ackman's portfolio
Amazon has a strong competitive presence in three markets. It operates the largest online marketplace in North America and Western Europe as measured by gross merchandise sales. It is the third-largest adtech company as measured by revenue. And Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the largest public cloud as measured by infrastructure and platform services spending.
Amazon is leaning on artificial intelligence across its retail business to improve customer service, product listings, supply chain management, and developer productivity. Brian Nowak at Morgan Stanley says Amazon's retail business could be the most underappreciated generative AI beneficiary in the technology space, and he estimates cost savings initiatives could raise its operating margin by several percentage points.
Meanwhile, AWS is ideally positioned to monetize AI simply because it is the largest public cloud. It accounted for 30% of infrastructure and platform services spending in the recent quarter, while the next closest cloud platform was Microsoft Azure with 20% market share. AWS has also designed custom chips for AI training and inference, and added tools that let developers build generative AI applications and agents.
Importantly, Amazon is positioning itself to monetize AI beyond its core e-commerce and cloud businesses. Its subsidiary Zoox builds robotaxis, and the company will launch its first autonomous ride-hailing service in Las Vegas in 2025, followed by other cities in subsequent years. Morgan Stanley estimates Zoox could have commercial robotaxi services in seven U.S. cities by 2028.
Looking ahead, Wall Street expects Amazon's earnings to grow at 18% annually over the next three years. That makes the current valuation of 35 times earnings look reasonable, especially when the company beat the consensus earnings estimate by an average of 22% in the last six quarters. Patient investors should take a cue from Bill Ackman and buy a few shares of this stock today.
Uber Technologies: 21% of Bill Ackman's portfolio
Uber leads the U.S. ride-sharing market with 76% share, according to Bloomberg. It also ranks second in the restaurant food delivery market with 24% share. That scale affords the company a competitive advantage in that it creates a significant amount of data that lets Uber predict demand, route drivers, and set prices more efficiently over time.
Uber has another important advantage in its ability to offer ride-sharing and food delivery services through a single mobile app. That makes customer acquisition very cost-efficient because the company can cross-sell users on both sides of its platform. For instance, 31% of first delivery trips come from mobility users, and 22% of first mobility trips come from delivery users.
CEO Dara Khosrowshahi recently told analysts that autonomous vehicle (AV) technology will be a $1 trillion opportunity for ride-sharing platforms. Uber is uniquely positioned to benefit given its unparalleled scale. "Uber can deliver the lowest operational costs for our AV partners because we are leaps and bounds ahead on every aspect of go-to-market capabilities," Khosrowshahi said.
Indeed, Uber may not be a traditional AI stock, but it could be a major winner as robotaxis become more prevalent due to the many partnerships it has formed with AV companies, according to Mark Mahaney at Evercore. Most notably, Uber connects riders with Waymo robotaxis in Phoenix, Austin, and Atlanta. And it connects riders with WeRide robotaxis in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, with 15 additional cities to follow in the next five years.
Wall Street estimates Uber's earnings will increase at 26% annually over the next three years, a reasonable estimate given the ride-sharing market is forecast to expand at 21% annually through 2033, according to Straits Research. That makes the current valuation of 16 times earnings look relatively cheap. Long-term investors should feel confident buying a small position in this stock today.

1. Uber
You know a company has made it big when its name effectively turns into a verb, such as when a person says they'll "Uber" to somewhere, to indicate they are going to use a ride-hailing service. But as prevalent as Uber's services are in North America, there's still much more growth potentially available in international markets, including in Argentina, Italy, South Korea, and other countries where the company is focused on growing its business.
And Uber's growth opportunities extend beyond just ride-hailing services. Last year, there were rumblings that it was looking at possibly acquiring travel booking company Expedia. While nothing came of that, I do believe the company's potential is massive. For example, it has partnered with Thames Clippers to run a river bus service in London, which is not only convenient but offers scenic views. In the future, I believe Uber will become a significant travel company, offering its customers many different modes of transportation.
Uber's business has grown from more than $17 billion in sales in 2021 to $44 billion this past year. It's a growth beast, and although it's a great buy today, it's a bit pricey, trading at a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple of 29 (based on analyst estimates). It's a solid long-term buy, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy it if it got back down to around its 52-week low.
2. Alphabet
Alphabet is a phenomenal company, and its stock is probably the most undervalued of the three on this list. It trades at a forward P/E of only 21, which is below the S&P 500 average of 24. But there's an element of risk and uncertainty with the business, pertaining to whether it will be broken up due to antitrust issues, and how competitive it will be with respect to artificial intelligence (AI).
Google Search and YouTube are terrific assets, and I see tremendous potential in its AI chatbot, Gemini, being able to integrate with them and add significant value for users in the future. I'm also encouraged by the company's recent quarterly results, which don't seem to imply that other chatbots are hurting its core business as many investors and analysts feared they might; Google's advertising business generated 10% revenue growth last quarter (which ended on June 30). And Alphabet's overall sales rose by 14% to over $96 billion.
Alphabet's stock is only up 6% this year, and with many question marks surrounding the tech company's future, I know there's a potential for its value to drop in the near future. And if that happens, it could be an excellent time to buy the stock at a cheaper price point.
3. Amazon
Another big tech stock that has produced lackluster gains this year is Amazon -- it's up just 1% as of Monday's close. However, it's the most expensive of the three, as it trades at 34 times its estimated future earnings. But that's still a smaller premium than what it has averaged in the past. A sharp decline in value would make it an even better buy.
Amazon's marketplace has been the go-to option for many shoppers over the years. And its Prime membership might be one of the best value options, packing in many benefits, including free shipping, video streaming, and music. The value proposition is incredible, so it's little wonder that the company has more than 240 million Prime subscribers all over the globe.
This is an unstoppable business to invest in, with Amazon reporting $670 billion in revenue over its past four quarters, and profits totaling $71 billion. It's hard to go wrong with buying the stock at any time, but if there's a downturn in the markets, it could make for one heck of a bargain buy.

3 Unstoppable Growth Stocks That I Wouldn't Hesitate to Buy if They Dropped in Value

Lucid Group, Inc. LCID is actively pursuing partnerships that go beyond selling or licensing its leading EV technology. On July 17, the company announced a major collaboration with Uber Technologies, Inc. UBER and Nuro to develop a next-generation premium robotaxi for Uber’s ride-hailing platform. The project combines Lucid Gravity’s advanced software-defined vehicle architecture, Nuro’s proven Level 4 autonomous driving system, and Uber’s global network and fleet management to create a fully integrated service designed for comfort, safety and scalability.
Lucid’s high-efficiency EV technology, which features an AV-capable sensor suite, redundant steering and braking and compact, high-power-density motors, aims to maximize uptime and lower per-mile operating costs. These factors are critical for robotaxi success. Its secure, software-defined architecture also supports third-party autonomy stacks.
Per the deal, Uber will invest $300 million in Lucid, which is subject to regulatory approval, and deploy at least 20,000 Lucid Gravity vehicles with Nuro autonomy over six years in multiple global markets, starting late next year. While this marks Lucid’s entry into the multitrillion-dollar robotaxi market, the company continues developing its own ADAS and autonomous driving capabilities, including a recently released hands-free driving update and ongoing AI training through a partnership with the University of Science and Technology.
Lucid plans to monetize its technology via licensing and strategic alliances. The Uber deal reinforces market confidence in Lucid’s advanced platform, and the automaker is in ongoing talks with additional partners. LCID carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) at present.

Other Automakers Pursuing Similar Partnerships
Tesla TSLA struck a deal with Chinese Internet giant Baidu in April to use its mapping license for data collection on the country’s public roads. This agreement removes the last regulatory barrier for Tesla to offer its Full Self Driving (FSD) system in China. With the license in place, Tesla can legally operate FSD on Chinese roads and collect environmental data from its fleet, including details on road layouts, traffic signs and surrounding buildings.
In September 2024, Waymo, Alphabet's GOOGL self-driving car project, and Uber broadened their collaboration to bring GOOGL’s Waymo One service to Austin and Atlanta exclusively through the Uber app. The rollout remains limited for now, Uber plans to scale to hundreds of vehicles in Atlanta in the coming quarters, while in Austin, GOOGL Waymo’s coverage via Uber spans around 90 square miles.
Lucid’s Price Performance, Valuation and Estimates
LCID has underperformed the Zacks Automotive - Domestic industry year to date. LCID shares have lost 22.5% compared with the industry’s decline of 13.8%.

Will Uber's $300M Bet on Gravity Accelerate Lucid's Growth?

Investors in Lucid Group (NASDAQ: LCID) had a lot to chew on in July, including a massive robotaxi deal that stunned the markets. Lucid stock rallied 16.6% during the month, according to data provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence, even surging 48% at one point in trading.
Shares, however, seem to be under pressure and have lost around 7% of their value in August so far, as of this writing. Was Lucid's July rally then a dead cat bounce, or is this an opportunity to buy a promising yet beaten-down electric vehicle (EV) stock?

Investor interest in Lucid stock is rising
Lucid sells Air sedans and Gravity SUVs. From July 31, the EV maker equipped all its Air sedans, regardless of model and year of make, with adapters that can work on Tesla's supercharger network. Gravity SUVs already had access to Tesla's superchargers.
Meanwhile, denser battery cells have boosted the EPA range estimate for Lucid's 2026 Air Touring model by over 6%, to 431 miles.
Lucid expects high EPA ratings, access to Tesla's extensive public charging network, and other recent enhancements such as advanced driver assistance systems to make its EVs more appealing in an intensely competitive market. In a bid to add to its brand appeal, Lucid also hired actor Timothée Chalamet as its first-ever global brand ambassador in July.
Lucid's robotaxi partnership with Uber Technologies (NYSE: UBER), however, sent the stock into a tizzy. Uber will buy over 20,000 Lucid Gravity SUVs equipped with Nuro's Level 4 autonomy software and deploy them over six years, with an expected launch in late 2026. As part of the deal, Uber also plans to invest millions of dollars in Lucid.
Lucid stock could jump 10x if this happens
In July, Lucid proposed a 1-for-10 reverse stock split. A reverse stock split, if it happens, will 10x Lucid's stock price.
There are no real benefits for investors, though, as their investment value in Lucid shares, as well as the company's market capitalization, will remain unchanged. However, a reverse stock split can benefit Lucid in two ways: prevent delisting from the Nasdaq stock exchange, and make its stock more attractive to institutional investors who typically avoid penny stocks.
Lucid needs real catalysts to maintain stock momentum, though. While the Uber partnership will infuse millions in cash and marks Lucid's foray into the autonomous vehicles market, which is expected to hit trillions of dollars by 2030, Lucid's production woes are far from over yet.
Lucid just cut its full-year production guidance to 18,000 to 20,000 vehicles from its previous forecast of 20,000 vehicles. Other than supply bottlenecks, Lucid is struggling with high costs and manufacturing inefficiencies, all of which could impact demand and sales. Lucid is also deep in losses, with its net loss rising by 8% to $855 million in the second quarter.
These are just some of the factors that investors should keep in mind before buying Lucid, a stock that has all but wiped out investors' money from its IPO days.
