Stifel Reports Y/Y Rise in Client & Fee-Based Assets for April 2025

Chicago, Illinois-based Kellanova (K) manufactures and markets snacks and convenience foods. Valued at a market cap of $28.6 billion, the company’s principal products consist of snacks, such as crackers, savory snacks, toaster pastries, cereal bars, granola bars, and bites; and convenience foods, including ready-to-eat cereals, frozen waffles, veggie foods, and noodles. It sells its products under various well-known brands, including Kellogg's, Cheez-It, Pringles, Austin, Parati, RXBAR, and Eggo, to name a few.
Shares of this snacks and convenience food manufacturing company have considerably outpaced the broader market over the past 52 weeks. K has rallied 33.9% over this time frame, while the broader S&P 500 Index ($SPX) has gained 8.6%. Moreover, on a YTD basis, the stock is up 2%, compared to SPX’s 4.3% drop.

Zooming in further, Kellanova has also outpaced the First Trust Nasdaq Food & Beverage ETF’s (FTXG) 8.6% decline over the past 52 weeks and 1.7% loss on a YTD basis.
On May 1, Kellanova’s shares closed up marginally after its Q1 earnings release. The company posted revenue of $3.1 billion, which declined 3.7% from the year-ago quarter, primarily due to unfavourable currency translation and widespread category softness. However, strong performance in its emerging markets helped drive a slight increase in its organic revenues.
On the earnings front, its adjusted EPS declined 10.9% year-over-year to $0.90, while its adjusted operating profit dropped 13.2% from the prior-year period. The decline in net sales and adjusted operating profit across most of its reportable segments, driven by ongoing macroeconomic and industry-related challenges, weighed on the company's overall performance.
For the current fiscal year, ending in December, analysts expect K’s EPS to decline 1.3% year over year to $3.81. The company’s earnings surprise history is mixed. It exceeded the consensus estimates in three of the last four quarters, while missing on another occasion.
Among the 16 analysts covering the stock, the consensus rating is a “Hold” which is based on all 16 “Hold” ratings.
This configuration is slightly less bullish than two months ago, with one analyst suggesting a “Moderate Buy” rating.
On May 5, Matthew Smith, CFA from Stifel Financial Corp. (SF) maintained a “Hold” rating on Kellanova, with a price target of $83.50, the Street-high price target, which indicates a 1.1% potential upside from the current levels.
As of writing, the company is trading above its mean price target of $81.47.

Kellanova Stock Outlook: Is Wall Street Bullish or Bearish?

On Wednesday, optimism was in the air on the stock market, as investors were hopeful that the current tariff war might not be as damaging as feared. They were selective about the stocks they piled into, however, and one they avoided was Stifel Financial (NYSE: SF).
This was due almost entirely to the investment bank's first-quarter earnings report, which the market found wanting. Investors traded Stifel down by almost 4% in reaction, on a day when the S&P 500 index posted a nearly 2% improvement.

Wealth management woes
For the quarter, Stifel's net revenue came in at just under $1.26 billion, which bettered the $1.16 billion in the same period a year ago. Yet that result was under the consensus analyst estimate of $1.3 billion.
The company whiffed far more badly on its bottom line result. Its non-GAAP (adjusted) net income fell dramatically over that one-year stretch, landing at $54.2 million ($0.49 per share) from Q1 2024's more than $163 million. Analysts had estimated a far higher per-share number, specifically $1.74.
One big culprit for the profitability decline was Stifel's global wealth management business -- the source of most of its revenue. What the company described as "higher litigation-related expenses" drove down the unit's pre-tax net income, to $126 million. In the same period of 2024, that profit was $290 million.
Looking forward to the future
In the earnings release, Stifel pointed out that the $1.26 billion top line is a new record for the first quarter. Admirably, the company acknowledged the setback in global wealth management, and it waxed bullish about the coming months despite the current macroeconomic headwinds.
"We remain optimistic about long-term growth, emphasizing the resilience of U.S. financial markets and the value our advice-driven model delivers during periods of uncertainty," CEO Ronald Kruszewski said.

Why Stifel Financial Stock Was Down on Wednesday

Goldman Sachs (GS) shares soared 11.8% in the last trading session to close at $516.87. The move was backed by solid volume with far more shares changing hands than in a normal session. This compares to the stock's 13% loss over the past four weeks.
Goldman Sachs witnessed a strong price increase driven by the President Donald Trump's announcement on April 9, 2025, of a 90-day suspension of tariffs for most trading partners, excluding China. The tariff suspension eased immediate worries about escalating trade wars, fostering a more favorable economic outlook. The expectation of improved economic conditions and increased market activity bolstered investors’ confidence in investment banking stocks like Goldman Sachs.
This investment bank is expected to post quarterly earnings of $12.72 per share in its upcoming report, which represents a year-over-year change of +9.8%. Revenues are expected to be $15.16 billion, up 6.6% from the year-ago quarter.
While earnings and revenue growth expectations are important in evaluating the potential strength in a stock, empirical research shows a strong correlation between trends in earnings estimate revisions and near-term stock price movements.
For Goldman, the consensus EPS estimate for the quarter has been revised 4.7% lower over the last 30 days to the current level. And a negative trend in earnings estimate revisions doesn't usually translate into price appreciation. So, make sure to keep an eye on GS going forward to see if this recent jump can turn into more strength down the road.

Goldman (GS) Surges 11.8%: Is This an Indication of Further Gains?

Not for the first time this young month, Lumentum Holdings (NASDAQ: LITE) was a highflier on the stock exchange Monday. Shares of the optical electronics specialist closed the day more than 5% higher in price, thanks to two bullish new analyst notes -- one of which involved a recommendation upgrade. The stock's rise provided a welcome contrast to the S&P 500 index, which fell by 0.2%.
A pair of positive pundits
Of the two new pundit publications, it was naturally the one with the upgrade that had the greater impact. Before market open that day, Northland analyst Tim Savageaux changed his recommendation on Lumentum to outperform (i.e., buy) from his previous market perform (hold). His price target on the company is $70 per share, which is 34% higher than the stock's current level.

Another boost from the world of punditry came from researchers at Stifel. On Monday, that company published its take on last week's Optica Executive Forum at the Optical Fiber Communications industry conference.
Stifel was generally quite bullish on what it heard and saw at the event. According to reports it wrote that with the increasing workloads requiring effective, low-latency data transmission will support companies in the optical field.
It put the kibosh on the idea that optical transceivers are obsolete; in the Stifel team's view, they are the only workable option for coping with sharply increasing bandwidth requirements.
A fine position to be in
Lumentum, then, is a company that is in the right time and place to take advantage of those dynamics. Judging by how its stock has done in recent trading sessions, it seems that many investors agree with Stifel's conclusions. This is doubtlessly a company worth watching.

Why Lumentum Holdings Stock Bounced 5% Higher Today

Shares of the electric carmaker Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) once again found the red today, as stocks extended their sell-off and another analyst lowered his price target on the stock. Tesla is trading about 5% lower as of 11:08 a.m. ET.

Stifel Financial analyst Stephen Gengaro issued a report this morning, lowering his price target on Tesla by $19 to $455. This still implies over 72% upside, and Gengaro maintained his buy rating on the stock. Gengaro's near-term concerns are shared by a growing chorus of analysts who expect Tesla to report weaker first-quarter deliveries due to a slow launch of Tesla's new Model Y, a potential hit from CEO Elon Musk's foray into politics, and reports of vandalism to Tesla vehicles.
Still, Gengaro is bullish long-term and thinks current headwinds are near-term issues. "The ramp of the new Model Y, the best-selling car in the world in 2024, is clearly a short-term sales headwind," Gengaro said in his note. "As Model Y production ramps in 2025, we expect sales to accelerate."
Gengaro is also bullish on the upcoming launch of Tesla's unsupervised full-self-driving technology in Austin and the launch of a lower-cost vehicle later this year. Gengaro also thinks that the company's energy storage division could be another catalyst not baked into the stock price yet.
Weighing the risk-reward
Bearish analysts are more concerned about first-quarter deliveries, while bullish analysts are looking ahead to catalysts powered by Tesla's potential artificial intelligence capabilities, which Musk expects to power new businesses like self-driving and robotics. Those may pan out, but with Tesla still trading at 93 times forward earnings, I'm avoiding the stock for now.
At this kind of valuation, unexpected bad news from tariffs, the company's first-quarter earnings, or delays in future business launches could lead to big sell-offs, which is why I still don't like the risk-reward setup.

Onetime investors' pet stock Freshpet (NASDAQ: FRPT) wasn't such a good boy over the past few days. On the back of a recommendation downgrade from one analyst and price target cuts from two others, investors sold out of the stock in recent trading sessions. That left it with a nearly 11% decline in price week-to-date as of Thursday evening, according to data compiled by S&P Global Market Intelligence.

Of the three events, the most consequential was the downgrade. This occurred on Tuesday when Oppenheimer's Rupesh Parikh moved his Freshpet recommendation down one peg to perform (hold, in other words) from his former outperform (buy). In doing so, Parikh removed his $140 per share price target; it has not yet been replaced.

According to reports, the analyst's new take on Freshpet is based on his observation that management has sounded more subdued about the company's prospects. He also characterized the company's latest guidance as "disappointing" and wrote that investors would be wise to wait for signs of top-line improvements.
This was compounded by those twin price target cuts, both of which were enacted at the beginning of the week.
Of the two, the more drastic was made by JPMorgan Chase prognosticator Ken Goldman, who now feels that Freshpet is fairly valued at $102 per share rather than his previous price target of $154. His peer Mark Astrachan of Stifel lowered his to $135 per share from $155. Both men kept their existing recommendations on the stock intact; these were neutral and buy, respectively.
A stock market treat?
I wouldn't necessarily bail from Freshpet, even though the stock has been in the investor doghouse since publishing its fourth-quarter and full-year results in February. I think its business strategy centered on healthy food products for our four-legged friends is a solid one, and the company is proving that it can grow its business robustly. This might be a good "buy on weakness" candidate.
