Starbucks to Post Q4 Earnings: What's in the Cards for the Stock?

Both Starbucks and Coca-Cola rang in the decade paying $0.41 per share in dividends, and each has an identical 2.9% dividend yield today.

There is no "k" in Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO). But urban legend has it that when Coca-Cola went public in 1919, Wall Street gave it the ticker symbol "KO" to stand for "knock-out," because of its sterling fundamentals and explosive profit potential. Actually, it became "KO" because the ticker "CO" was already taken. But regardless, Coca-Cola proved to be a "knock-out" investment, raising its dividend for the last 63 years and counting.
In particular, the company issued rapid dividend hikes in the years after Warren Buffett first bought shares in 1988. In the following decade, the company quadrupled its payouts. It's raised its dividend by another 505% since 2000.

Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX) started paying a dividend much more recently, in 2010. But it soon earned a reputation as a dividend machine, raising payouts by 720% over the next decade. Capital appreciation naturally followed, with shares rising by over 1,000%.
Today, Starbucks and Coca-Cola both offer a 2.9% dividend yield. But in 2025, one is clearly superior as an income investment.
Fundamentals suggest Coca-Cola will grow dividends faster in 2026 and beyond
Not only do these stocks offer a near-identical yield today, but coincidentally, they also rang in 2020 paying the same dividend of $0.41 per share. Over the last five years, the pace of dividend hikes for both companies has slowed dramatically. Since 2020, Starbucks has raised payouts from $0.41 per share to $0.61 per share, a 49% increase.
Coca-Cola, meanwhile, has increased payouts from $0.41 per share to $0.52 per share, a 27% increase that only barely keeps up with the inflation of 25% since January 2020.
But past performance does not guarantee future results. Three indicators suggest that Coca-Cola will defy the precedent of the last five years to grow dividends at a faster pace than Starbucks.
First, there's the payout ratio, or the percentage of net income that a company is already setting aside to pay dividends. A lower payout ratio indicates more room to grow payouts, since it's easier to grow a smaller percentage, all else being equal. Starbucks has a payout ratio of 103.9%, meaning it's dipping into cash reserves or taking on debt to pay its dividend. Meanwhile, Coca-Cola's payout ratio is 67.7%, indicating a much more sustainable payout.
Secondly, growing earnings indicate a dividend is sustainable. Last quarter, Coca-Cola grew its earnings by 29.8% year over year, while Starbucks saw its earnings fall by 47.1%amid a turnaround effort that hasn't yet borne fruit for the troubled company.
Thirdly, a higher operating margin means a company is well positioned to grow its dividend. Operating margin is the percentage of revenue left over after all operating costs, from salaries to overhead and utility bills, are paid.
On this score in particular, Coca-Cola excels. Its operating margin is 32.2%, which compares very favorably to Starbucks' operating margin of 9.51%. For context, the average S&P 500 company has an operating margin of 10.8%.
Another reason income investors should choose Coca-Cola
Share buybacks can also boost a dividend's sustainability by reducing the number of shares on which a company must pay out dividends. Last quarter, Coca-Cola retired 1.1 million shares, paying $81.2 million to buy back the stock. While not a huge number, it's part of a buyback program to retire $6 billion worth of shares through 2030.
Apart from making the dividend more sustainable, it will also boost earnings per share, as the company's earnings would be divided by a smaller and smaller denominator of shares. By contrast, Starbucks has not repurchased any shares since May 2024, despite ostensibly reversing a pause on share buybacks the prior year.
It's possible management is wary of buying stock in the middle of a turnaround, in which the company's resources are urgently needed elsewhere. If so, that decision is in the best interest of shareholders. Even so, Coca-Cola doesn't have that problem. Based on its fundamentals and the extra tailwind of its share buyback program, Coca-Cola is clearly the better bet for income investors.

Unlocking Q4 Potential of Starbucks (SBUX): Exploring Wall Street Estimates for Key Metrics

Investors in Starbucks Corp. (Symbol: SBUX) saw new options become available today, for the December 5th expiration. It's been just over a year since superstar CEO Brian Niccol took over, and investors will get an update on how things are going when Starbucks reports fiscal fourth-quarter earnings on Oct. 29. Let's take a look at what's been going on, what investors could expect, and whether to buy the stock now.

Going back to its roots
Starbucks has been mired in problems ranging from too-long lines to outdated equipment and old-style cafes. It's the classic example of a company getting too big to handle and in danger of becoming a dinosaur. It now operates more than 41,000 stores worldwide, and that's not an easy boat to steer.
It's gone through four different CEOs over the past five years, and when Niccol joined last year, he laid out a plan to return the company to its roots as a gathering place for customers to enjoy coffee. He said the process felt "transactional," product has been inconsistent, and the wait is too long. Prior to his joining, the company had become too promotional, which marred what was supposed to be an elevated Starbucks experience.
Some changes he's made since then are bringing back the condiments bar, which made it quicker for baristas to hand off beverages, and new technology to streamline the ordering process.
This is still a work in progress, but there have already been some positive results, including some quicker order fulfilment.
How it's playing out
Starbucks is still reporting declines, but management isn't expecting an immediate turnaround. "We've fixed a lot and done the hard work on the hard things to build a strong operating foundation," Niccol said after the fiscal third-quarter (ended June 29) report, "and based on my experience of turnarounds, we are ahead of schedule."
He's still in the rebuilding stage, and he expects to "unleash a wave of innovation" in 2026 that will bring Starbucks into its next phase of growth.
Although comparable sales (comps) fell 2% from last year in the quarter, Starbucks opened 308 stores, and total sales increased 4%. Comps also increased 2% in China, a strong showing in a large growth market.
What management might tell shareholders
In other words, don't expect any incredible improvement in the fourth quarter. Management declined to provide specific guidance for the quarter and said that it felt "conservative" about how the quarter would turn out.
On the negative side, it's still dealing with inflation and tariff changes, and it's expecting year-over-year cost comparisons to peak in the 2026 first quarter. It's still heavily investing in its turnaround plan, and that will hit the bottom line in the fourth quarter.
On the positive side, transactions are improving, and it has changed its supply practices to hedge better for tariffs and cost changes. The new technology it has implemented to improve the order and fulfilment process is also leading to better outcomes in stores.
One update the company already gave is that it recently had its "strongest single Tuesday and week of sales in company history the week Pumpkin Spice Latte and other fall favorites returned."
Should you buy Starbucks stock?
Starbucks stock is down 7% in 2025, and at the current price, it trades at a forward, 1-year P/E ratio of 26. That's not exactly cheap for a company that's struggling. It points to the market's overall positive view of what Starbucks can achieve under Niccol's leadership.
There's always the chance that Starbucks overdelivers in the fourth quarter and the price jumps, but investors shouldn't buy before Oct. 29 with that expectation. If you can buy and hold for the long term, Starbucks could end up making a huge recovery and offering years of growth and stability. It also pays a dividend that yields 2.9% at today's price, and it could be a good candidate for passive income even today.

A Dutch Bros store on every block?
Dutch Bros is a fairly small player in coffee chains, with just over 1,000 stores in the U.S. That's a drop in the bucket compared to leader Starbucks, which operates more than 41,000 global stores, including 17,000 in the U.S. alone. But things have been going so splendidly that management recently said it envisions eventually having 7,000 stores, with a concrete goal of operating 2,029 stores by the year 2029, or doubling the store count in four years.
Doubling store count that quickly should have the effect of more than doubling sales, as comparable sales should keep increasing in addition to the revenue from new stores.
The company has been scaling profitably, with positive and growing net income, and free cash flow is turning positive as sales are increasing enough to cover capital expenditures on new store development and have some cash left over.
As Dutch Bros continues to scale with new stores over the next five years, expect the stock to follow.

Morgan Stanley Maintains Starbucks (SBUX) Overweight Recommendation

Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE: CMG) has unwrapped its most serious challenge since the health outbreaks of the previous decade. The stock of the Newport Beach, California-based company is down more than 35% since peaking in December of last year, and with sales growth decelerating rapidly, investors seem less tolerant of its elevated valuation.
This leaves prospective shareholders in a predicament. Should they stay away because shares are going to keep sliding, or is it time to start buying at this discounted stock price?

Chipotle's struggles
Chipotle's struggles may date back to the time former CEO Brian Niccol announced his departure to Starbucks in August last year.
Since Chief Operating Officer Scott Boatwright has taken over as CEO, Chipotle's struggles have become more apparent. The economy remains uncertain, and fast-casual restaurants such as Cava Group and Sweetgreen have captured increased attention.
That has led to comparable restaurant sales decreasing by 4% in the second quarter of 2025, and, for the year, management has guided to flat comparable restaurant sales compared to last year's results.
Consequently, revenue for the first half of 2025 increased by 5% year over year to just over $5.9 billion. Operating costs and expenses also rose across the board, causing its net margin for the first two quarters of 2025 to fall to 13.9% from 14.4% one year ago. Thus, Chipotle's $823 million in net income increased by only 1% during that period.
Amid that performance, its P/E ratio, which has rarely fallen below 45 over the last three years, is now down to 37, a valuation it had not seen since the food-borne illness outbreaks in the middle of the previous decade.
The factor that could spark the comeback in Chipotle stock
Investors should also not lose sight of the attributes that made Chipotle so successful for so long. The company showed the market that restaurants could succeed with the fast-casual concept while offering food that was healthy and flavorful. With that, its loyal following and brand recognition have fostered the growth that has taken it to more than 3,800 restaurants.
Management also believes it can eventually grow to 7,000 locations in North America. This means it will probably have positive growth over the next few years, even under more bearish scenarios.
However, the slowing growth means Chipotle has had to depend on its aggressive store openings to keep revenue growth positive. To that end, it has planned to open between 315 and 345 new restaurants, opening 113 of those restaurants in the first half of the year.
Additionally, even though the company has capitalized on most of the opportunities to be found in the U.S., that country accounts for more than 98% of its locations.
With that, the future growth of Chipotle stock likely depends heavily on international success. It opened a small number of locations in Canada, Western Europe, and Kuwait before Niccol departed. Under Boatwright's leadership, it plans to expand into South Korea, Singapore, and Mexico next year.
That could ultimately lead to the type of success that benefited restaurant chains like Starbucks and McDonald's. Since each of these chains has grown to more than 40,000 restaurants, Chipotle has the opportunity for a massive expansion if it can develop a significant following outside of the U.S.
Should I buy Chipotle stock?
Under current conditions, investors should probably refrain from purchasing Chipotle stock, at least for now.
Indeed, Chipotle is likely to continue adding locations, keeping overall revenue growth positive and probably making the stock a hold. Nonetheless, the real test is how its international expansion will go. If it takes off abroad, it could match Starbucks or McDonald's for the number of locations under more optimistic scenarios. Such a success means that Chipotle has barely scratched the surface of its potential and that investors should buy the stock.
However, if Chipotle fails abroad and is eventually limited to its 7,000-restaurant goal in North America, the slowdown in growth could become permanent, which could ultimately mean the consumer discretionary stock sells at a lower valuation.
Thus, investors should either wait for signs of success abroad or at least hold out for a substantial acceleration in revenue growth before buying Chipotle at current levels.
