SATS' Hughes & Celona to Unveil Fully Managed Private 5G Networks

Key Points
EchoStar sold even more of its wireless spectrum assets to SpaceX for $17 billion, with half in SpaceX shares.
This follows the $23 billion sale to AT&T in August.
Verizon is now reportedly in talks to acquire even more assets from EchoStar.
Shares of EchoStar (NASDAQ: SATS) rallied another 23.6% in September, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence.
EchoStar's rally was all the more notable, given that EchoStar had already rallied nearly 90% in the prior month, when it managed to sell a big slug of its wireless spectrum at prices much higher than the market had anticipated.

September saw a repeat occurrence, with EchoStar selling even more of its wireless spectrum assets, bringing in even more cash, as well as shares of Elon Musk's SpaceX. Management also gave a presentation regarding what it has done with all the cash, as well as its operational plan going forward.
EchoStar unloads more spectrum to SpaceX, with even more to go
Early in September, EchoStar announced it had agreed to sell another $17 billion worth of wireless spectrum to Elon Musk's SpaceX. That deal followed EchoStar's blockbuster $23 billion sale of wireless spectrum to AT&T (NYSE: T) in August.
Unlike the all-cash AT&T sale, the SpaceX sale was split between $8.5 billion in cash and $8.5 billion in SpaceX stock. The AT&T sale had essentially been enough to wipe out all of EchoStar's debt, so a cash infusion wasn't necessarily needed.
Meanwhile, EchoStar is now a SpaceX shareholder, which, though private, appears to be an exciting growth company that should serve the space economy for decades to come. That may be a refreshing "upside" play for EchoStar shareholders, whose main other businesses are the declining DISH TV satellite TV and broadband, as well as the low-growth Boost Mobile wireless service.
In a mid-month presentation, EchoStar management said that it will immediately pay down $11.4 billion in debt right away, taking out its highest-yielding notes that go up to an 11.75% yield. That should greatly lower the company's interest expense, while leaving EchoStar with $24.1 billion in cash against just $13.4 billion in debt after the debt paydown. In addition, EchoStar will have its $8.5 billion stake in SpaceX also on the balance sheet.
EchoStar also still had about 45 MHz of spectrum remaining at the end of the month, down from the 140 MHz or so before the AT&T deal. On the last day of September, Bloomberg reported Verizon (NYSE: VZ) was interested in the remaining spectrum still held by EchoStar. That caused another jump in the stock, capping another great month for shareholders.
Could EchoStar still be cheap?
EchoStar's market cap has risen to about $21.6 billion. While that is a lot higher than early in the year, EchoStar now has $10.7 billion in net cash, along with $8.5 billion in SpaceX shares, and some extra spectrum of unknown market value.
That means the remaining "legacy" businesses are only valued at $2.4 billion -- even valuing the remaining spectrum at zero. And while the remaining businesses technically are "losing" money, they have made $15.5 billion in revenue over the past 12 months. Meanwhile, the retirement of EchoStar's debt should relieve lots of interest expense and could also enable lower capital spending.
EchoStar chairman and co-founder Charlie Ergen is a savvy operator, as evidenced by his purchase of wireless spectrum that later turned out to be very valuable. It wouldn't be crazy to assume that he and his team will create more value going forward with the greater financial flexibility they have to work with today.

Why EchoStar Rallied Again in September

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Tuesday closed up +0.41%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) (DIA) closed up +0.18%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed up +0.28%. December E-mini S&P futures (ESZ25) rose +0.39%, and December E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQZ25) rose +0.26%.
Stock indexes recovered from early losses on Tuesday and settled higher. Short covering emerged in stocks on Tuesday as pharmaceutical makers rallied after Pfizer agreed to slash some of its drug prices by up to 85% in exchange for a three-year reprieve from pharmaceutical tariffs. The deal may set a path for other pharmaceutical makers to follow, with Eli Lilly and other major drugmakers in active discussions with the Trump administration to expand patient access and make medicines more affordable. Also, the strength in chip makers on Tuesday lent support to the broader market.

Stocks initially moved lower on Tuesday due to the rising risk of a US government shutdown, which undermined market sentiment and prompted a risk-off in most asset markets. Late Monday, Vice President Vance said President Trump’s last-ditch meeting with congressional leaders ended without a deal. Most federal operations would pause if lawmakers failed to reach an agreement before 11:59 p.m. tonight. Friday’s monthly payroll report would likely be delayed, as the Bureau of Labor Statistics would cease operations in the event of a shutdown.
Tuesday’s economic news was mixed for stocks. On the positive side were signs of a stronger labor market, as evidenced by the August JOLTS job openings, which rose more than expected. On the negative side, the Sep MNI Chicago PMI unexpectedly declined, and the Conference Board US Sep consumer confidence index fell more than expected to a 5-month low. Also, energy producers declined after the price of WTI crude oil fell more than -1% to a 1-week low.
The US Jul S&P composite-20 home price index showed home prices rose +1.82% y/y, above expectations of +1.55% y/y, but still the slowest pace of increase in two years.
The US Sep MNI Chicago PMI unexpectedly fell -0.9 to 40.6, weaker than expectations of an increase to 43.3.
The US Aug JOLTS job openings rose +19,000 to 7.227 million, showing a stronger labor market than expectations of 7.200 million.
The Conference Board US Sep consumer confidence index fell -3.6 to a 5-month low of 94.2, weaker than expectations of 96.0.
Comments from Fed Vice Chair Philip Jefferson on Tuesday hint at the possibility of stagflation and are negative for stocks, as he stated, “I see risks to employment as tilted to the downside and risks to inflation to the upside.”
Comments on Tuesday from Boston Fed President Susan Collins were slightly dovish when she said, “I continue to see a modestly restrictive policy stance as appropriate, as the Fed works to restore price stability while limiting the risks of further labor market weakening.” She added, “It may be appropriate to ease the policy rate a bit further this year, but the data will have to show that.”
Late Monday, President Trump ordered 10% tariffs on imports of softwood timber and lumber, as well as 25% tariffs on kitchen cabinets, vanities, and upholstered wood products. The tariffs are set to take effect on October 14, with some increases scheduled to take effect on January 1.
The US government will shut down on Wednesday if lawmakers fail to pass a spending bill or continuing resolution (CR) by this evening. The White House warned last Wednesday that a shutdown would trigger widespread dismissals of employees in government programs that don’t align with President Trump’s priorities.
Rising corporate earnings expectations are a bullish backdrop for stocks. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, more than 22% of companies in the S&P 500 provided guidance for their Q3 earnings results that are expected to beat analysts’ expectations, the highest in a year. Also, S&P companies are expected to post +6.9% earnings growth in Q3, up from +6.7% as of the end of May.
The markets are pricing in a 97% chance of a -25 bp rate cut at the next FOMC meeting on Oct 28-29.
Market focus this week will be on any new trade or tariff news. On Wednesday, the Sep ADP employment change is expected to increase by +51,000. Also, the Sep ISM manufacturing index is expected to rise by +0.3 to 49.0. On Thursday, weekly initial unemployment claims are expected to increase by +7,000 to 225,000. Also, Aug factory orders are expected to increase by +1.4% m/m. On Friday, Sep nonfarm payrolls are expected to increase by +51,000, and the Sep unemployment rate is expected to remain unchanged at 4.3%. Also, Sep average hourly earnings are expected to increase by +0.3% m/m and +3.7% y/y. Finally, the Sep ISM services index is expected to slip -0.2 to 51.8.
Overseas stock markets on Tuesday settled mixed. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed up +0.42%. China’s Shanghai Composite rose to a 1.5-week high and closed up +0.52%. Japan’s Nikkei Stock 225 fell to a 1-week low and closed down -0.25%.
Interest Rates
December 10-year T-notes (ZNZ5) on Tuesday closed down -0.5 of a tick. The 10-year T-note yield rose +0.7 bp to 4.146%. T-notes gave up an early advance on Tuesday and settled little changed as a recovery in stocks from early losses reduced safe-haven demand for government debt securities. Also, the Aug JOLTS job openings rose more than expected, a hawkish factor for Fed policy.
T-notes initially moved higher on Tuesday as weakness in stocks boosted some safe-haven demand for government securities. Also, the Sep MNI Chicago PMI unexpectedly declined, and the Conference Board US Sep consumer confidence index fell more than expected to a 5-month low, supportive factors for T-notes. In addition, month-end buying by bond dealers is supporting T-notes as the dealers purchase longer-term government debt securities to extend duration and balance their bond portfolios.
European government bond yields on Tuesday were mixed. The 10-year German bund yield recovered from a 1.5-week low of 2.693% and finished up +0.3 bp at 2.711%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell -0.1 bp to 4.699%.
German Aug retail sales unexpectedly fell -0.2% m/m, weaker than expectations of 0.6% m/m.
The German Sep unemployment change increased by +14,000, showing a weaker labor market than expectations of +8,000.
German Sep CPI (EU harmonized) rose +2.4% y/y, stronger than expectations of +2.2% y/y and the strongest pace of increase in 7 months.
Swaps are discounting a 1% chance for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on October 30.
US Stock Movers
Pharmaceutical stocks rallied Tuesday, led by a +6% jump in Pfizer (PFE) after it agreed to slash some of its drug prices by up to 85% in exchange for a three-year reprieve from pharmaceutical tariffs. Also, Merck & Co. (MRK) closed up more than +6% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials, and Eli Lilly (LLY) closed up more than +5%. In addition, AbbVie (ABBV), AstraZeneca Plc (AZN), and Amgen (AMGN) closed up more than +3%, and Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY) closed up more than +2%.
Chipmakers are moving higher today to support the broader market. Nvidia (NVDA), Micron Technology (MU), Marvell Technology (MRVL), and Lam Research (LRCX) closed up more than +2%. Also, KLA Corp (KLAC) and ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) closed up more than +1%.
Energy producers and energy service providers retreated Tuesday after the price of WTI crude oil fell by more than -1% to a 1-week low. Baker Hughes (BKR) closed down more than -3% and Schlumberger (SLB) closed down more than -2%. Also, Occidental Petroleum (OXY), Halliburton (HAL), ConocoPhillips (COP), Devon Energy (DVN), Marathon Petroleum (MPC), Phillips 66 (PSX), Exxon Mobil (XOM), and Valero Energy (VLO) closed down more than -1%.
Semtech (SMTC) closed up more than +15% after Oppenheimer Securities upgraded the stock to outperform from market perform with a price target of $81.
CoreWeave (CRWV) closed up more than +11% after signing a deal to supply Meta Platforms with as much as $14.2 billion of computing power.
Freeport McMoRan (FCX) closed up more than +5% after Bank of America Global Research upgraded the stock to buy from neutral with a price target of $42.
Lamb Weston Holdings (LW) closed up more than +4% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q1 net sales of $1.66 billion, better than the consensus of $1.62 billion.
CRH Plc (CRH) closed up more than +4% after forecasting full-year adjusted Ebitda of $7.5 billion-$7.7 billion, the midpoint above the consensus of $7.57 billion.
Monolithic Power Systems (MPWR) closed up more than +3% after KeyBanc Capital Markets raised its price target on the stock to $1,050 from $950.
EchoStar (SATS) closed up more than +3% as Verizon Communications is said to be in discussions about purchasing some of the company’s wireless spectrum.
Firefly Aerospace (FLY) closed down more than -20% after saying that the first stage of its Alpha Flight 7 rocket experienced an event that resulted in “a loss of the stage.”
Albemarle (ALB) closed down more than -6% to lead losers in the S&P 500 as lithium producers retreated on news that China approved the restart of the CATL mine that had been halted since last month.
NuScale Power Corp (SMR) closed down more than -5% after Bank of America Global Research downgraded the stock to underperform from neutral with a price target of $34.
Spotify Technology SA (SPOT) closed down more than -4% after announcing founder Daniel Ek will step down as CEO next year.
TripAdvisor (TRIP) closed down more than -4% after Mizuho Securities initiated coverage on the stock with a recommendation of underperform with a price target of $14.
Oklo (OKLO) closed down more than -4% after Bank of America Global Research downgraded the stock to neutral from buy.

Stocks Settle Higher as Drug Makers and Chip Stocks Rally

EchoStar (NASDAQ: SATS) stock was bouncing higher on the second trading day of the week, thanks in no small part to speculation that a giant peer might be snapping up some of its wireless spectrum. Near market close, EchoStar's shares were rising by almost 4% at a time when the S&P 500 index was floating 0.3% higher.
A possible deal worth around $10 billion
According to a report published by Bloomberg after market close Monday and updated Tuesday morning, EchoStar is currently in discussions to divest some of its wireless telephony spectrum to Verizon Communications.

Citing unidentified "people familiar with the situation," the talks focus on EchoStar's AWS-3 spectrum licenses. These have notable value, as they are ideal for 5G technology. Bloomberg said that EchoStar has placed a carrying value of $9.8 billion on these assets.
The company has been an eager seller of spectrum recently, inking deals for such assets with Elon Musk's SpaceX and AT&T. EchoStar's CEO Hamid Akhavan has said his company is abandoning its previous ambition to build a sprawling wireless network. It operates a telecom, Boost Mobile, but aims to use a hybrid model in collaboration with AT&T for the brand's network.
No official word yet
Neither EchoStar nor Verizon has yet officially commented on the Bloomberg article, and they are not likely to if discussions are indeed ongoing. Another spectrum sale would be entirely in character for EchoStar, but we do need to be cautious here, as such a deal is only speculation at this point.

Late Monday, President Trump ordered 10% tariffs on imports of softwood timber and lumber, as well as 25% tariffs on kitchen cabinets, vanities, and upholstered wood products. The tariffs are set to take effect on October 14, with some increases scheduled to take effect on January 1.
The US government will shut down on Wednesday if lawmakers fail to pass a spending bill or continuing resolution (CR) by this evening. The White House warned last Wednesday that a shutdown would trigger widespread dismissals of employees in government programs that don’t align with President Trump’s priorities.
Rising corporate earnings expectations are a bullish backdrop for stocks. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, more than 22% of companies in the S&P 500 provided guidance for their Q3 earnings results that are expected to beat analysts’ expectations, the highest in a year. Also, S&P companies are expected to post +6.9% earnings growth in Q3, up from +6.7% as of the end of May.
The markets are pricing in a 97% chance of a -25 bp rate cut at the next FOMC meeting on Oct 28-29.
Market focus this week will be on any new trade or tariff news. On Wednesday, the Sep ADP employment change is expected to increase by +51,000. Also, the Sep ISM manufacturing index is expected to rise by +0.3 to 49.0. On Thursday, weekly initial unemployment claims are expected to increase by +7,000 to 225,000. Also, Aug factory orders are expected to increase by +1.4% m/m. On Friday, Sep nonfarm payrolls are expected to increase by +51,000, and the Sep unemployment rate is expected to remain unchanged at 4.3%. Also, Sep average hourly earnings are expected to increase by +0.3% m/m and +3.7% y/y. Finally, the Sep ISM services index is expected to slip -0.2 to 51.8.
Overseas stock markets today are mixed. The Euro Stoxx 50 is up +0.08%. China’s Shanghai Composite rose to a 1.5-week high and closed up +0.52%. Japan’s Nikkei Stock 225 fell to a 1-week low and closed down -0.25%.
Interest Rates
December 10-year T-notes (ZNZ5) today are up +7 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is down -2.9 bp to 4.110%. T-notes are climbing today as weakness in stocks has sparked some safe-haven demand for government securities. Also, a decline in inflation expectations is bullish for T-notes after the 10-year breakeven inflation rate fell to a 2.5-week low today at 2.348%. In addition, month-end buying by bond dealers is supporting T-notes as the dealers purchase longer-term government debt securities to extend duration and balance their bond portfolios.
Today’s US economic news was mixed for T-notes. On the positive side, the Sep MNI Chicago PMI unexpectedly declined, and the Conference Board US Sep consumer confidence index fell more than expected to a 5-month low. Conversely, the Aug JOLTS job openings rose more than expected.
European government bond yields are mixed today. The 10-year German bund yield recovered from a 1.5-week low of 2.693% and is up +0.1 bp at 2.709%. The 10-year UK gilt yield is down -0.3 bp to 4.698%.
German Aug retail sales unexpectedly fell -0.2% m/m, weaker than expectations of 0.6% m/m.
The German Sep unemployment change increased by +14,000, showing a weaker labor market than expectations of +8,000.
German Sep CPI (EU harmonized) rose +2.4% y/y, stronger than expectations of +2.2% y/y and the strongest pace of increase in 7 months.
Swaps are discounting a 1% chance for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on October 30.
US Stock Movers
Energy producers and energy service providers are sliding today with the price of WTI crude oil down by more than -1% at a 1-week low. Baker Hughes (BKR) and Schlumberger (SLB) are down more than -4% and Occidental Petroleum (OXY) and Halliburton (HAL) are down more than -3%. Also, APA Corp (APA), ConocoPhillips (COP), Devon Energy (DVN), and Marathon Petroleum (MPC) are down more than -2%. In addition, Diamondback Energy (FANG), Phillips 66 (PSX), Exxon Mobil (XOM), Chevron (CVX), and Valero Energy (VLO) are down more than -1%.
Chipmakers are moving higher today to support the broader market. Nvidia (NVDA) is up more than +2% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100 and Dow Jones Industrials. Also, Micron Technology (MU), Lam Research (LRCX), Marvell Technology (MRVL), Applied Materials (AMAT), and ASML Holding NV (ASML) are up more than +1%.
Firefly Aerospace (FLY) is down more than -22% after saying that the first stage of its Alpha Flight 7 rocket experienced an event that resulted in “a loss of the stage.”
Albemarle (ALB) is down more than -7% to lead losers in the S&P 500 as lithium producers retreated on news that China approved the restart of the CATL mine that had been halted since last month.
Spotify Technology SA (SPOT) is down more than -5% after announcing founder Daniel Ek will step down as CEO next year.
TripAdvisor (TRIP) is down more than -4% after Mizuho Securities initiated coverage on the stock with a recommendation of underperform with a price target of $14.
Paychex (PAYX) is down more than -3% following disappointment that Q1 revenue came in as expected at $1.54 billion.
Oklo (OKLO) is down more than -3% after Bank of America Global Research downgraded the stock to neutral from buy.
NuScale Power Corp (SMR) is down more than -2% after Bank of America Global Research downgraded the stock to underperform from neutral with a price target of $34.
CoreWeave (CRWV) is up more than +14% after signing a deal to supply Meta Platforms with as much as $14.2 billion of computing power.

Stocks Post Gains on Mixed US Economic News

Most federal operations would pause if lawmakers failed to reach an agreement before 11:59 p.m. tonight. Friday's monthly payroll report would likely be delayed, as the Bureau of Labor Statistics would cease operations in the event of a shutdown.

The US Jul S&P composite-20 home price index showed home prices rose +1.82% y/y, above expectations of +1.55% y/y, but still the slowest pace of increase in two years.
The US Sep MNI Chicago PMI unexpectedly fell -0.9 to 40.6, weaker than expectations of an increase to 43.3.
Comments today from Fed Vice Chair Philip Jefferson hint at the possibility of stagflation and are negative for stocks, as he stated, "I see risks to employment as tilted to the downside and risks to inflation to the upside."
Comments today from Boston Fed President Susan Collins were slightly dovish when she said, "I continue to see a modestly restrictive policy stance as appropriate, as the Fed works to restore price stability while limiting the risks of further labor market weakening." She added, "It may be appropriate to ease the policy rate a bit further this year, but the data will have to show that."

Looking at the underlying holdings of the ETFs in our coverage universe at ETF Channel, we have compared the trading price of each holding against the average analyst 12-month forward target price, and computed the weighted average implied analyst target price for the ETF itself. For the Vanguard S&P Mid-Cap 400 ETF (Symbol: IVOO), we found that the implied analyst target price for the ETF based upon its underlying holdings is $125.15 per unit.
With IVOO trading at a recent price near $109.46 per unit, that means that analysts see 14.33% upside for this ETF looking through to the average analyst targets of the underlying holdings. Notable ETF Inflow Detected - IWM, CRDO, FN, SATS

Key Points
Sentiment on the stock was still quite positive after Monday's explosive announcement.
The company made an 11-figure deal to divest spectrum licenses.
On Tuesday, EchoStar (NASDAQ: SATS) was still basking in the glow of the $19 billion spectrum license deal it signed with Elon Musk's extraterrestrial exploration company SpaceX. Investors continued to be drawn to EchoStar's star power after announcing the purchase Monday. What also helped were several positive analyst upgrades on the company's stock.
By the end of the day, EchoStar had risen again, closing the day almost 4% higher. That compared most favorably to the 0.3% increase of the bellwether S&P 500 index.

Only the beginning?
One of the more bullish adjustments from a researcher was delivered Tuesday by Deutsche Bank. The lender's analysts cranked their EchoStar price target a robust 52% higher to $102 per share from $67.
Deutsche's new take was, naturally, based largely on the blockbuster deal. According to reports, the European bank calculates that the company will reap $14.4 billion after taxes from the arrangement. This is to be paid in a 50/50 mix of cash and SpaceX equity.
The pundits also speculated that this won't be the last spectrum sell-off from EchoStar. They wrote that divestments from the company's Advanced Wireless Services-3 (AWS-3) portfolio could be worth $9.9 billion. It flagged telecom giant Verizon Communications as a potential buyer, given that company's smaller collection of spectrum assets compared to rivals.
A shift might be coming
If EchoStar's SpaceX deal is indeed a harbinger of things to come, the company stands in front of significant revenue-generating opportunities. Yet the sell-off of its spectrum raises questions about its future business direction; investors should keep their ears to the ground and listen for management's comments about changes in business strategy.

Why EchoStar Stock Popped Again Today

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Tuesday closed up +0.27%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) (DIA) closed up +0.43%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed up +0.33%. September E-mini S&P futures (ESU25) rose +0.28%, and September E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQU25) rose +0.36%.
Stock indexes on Tuesday settled higher after the preliminary revision to US payrolls in the year through March showed the number of jobs was fewer than previously stated, bolstering the outlook for accelerated interest rate cuts by the Fed. Stocks remain underpinned by the prospect of a more accommodative Fed, as the markets have fully priced in a 25 bp rate cut by the Fed at next week’s FOMC meeting and priced in a 10% chance for a 50 bp rate cut.

M&A activity also supported stocks on Tuesday after Anglo American agreed to acquire Teck Resources, creating a more than $50 billion company. Also, Novartis AG is buying Tourmaline Bio for about $1.4 billion.
The preliminary benchmark payroll revisions to US payrolls in the year through March 2025 showed -911,000 fewer jobs than previously stated, a wider loss than expectations of -700,000 and the largest markdown in job growth since at least 2000, a sign of a weaker US labor market.
Market focus this week will be on any trade or tariff news. On Wednesday, Aug PPI final demand is expected to climb +3.3% y/y, unchanged from July, and Aug PPI ex-food and energy is expected to ease to +3.5% y/y from +3.7% y/y in July. On Thursday, Aug CPI is expected to climb to +2.9% y/y from +2.7% y/y in July, and Aug CPI ex-food and energy is expected to increase +3.1% y/y, unchanged from July. Also, weekly initial unemployment claims are expected to fall by -3,000 to 234,000. On Friday, the University of Michigan Sep consumer sentiment index is expected to slip -0.2 to 58.0.
The markets are now pricing in a 10% chance of a 50 bp rate cut at the upcoming FOMC meeting on Sep 16-17, versus the previous expectations of a zero chance of that 50 bp rate cut. After the fully expected -25 bp rate cut at the Sep 16-17 meeting, the markets are now discounting a 75% chance of a second -25 bp rate cut at the Oct 28-29 meeting, up from a 54% chance as of late Thursday. The markets are now pricing in an overall -72 bp rate cut in the federal funds rate by year-end to 3.66% from the current 4.38% rate.
Regarding tariffs, a federal appeals court ruled late last month that President Trump exceeded his authority by imposing global tariffs without Congressional approval, but the court let the tariffs remain in place while appeals continue. The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit Court said, “The statute bestows significant authority on the President to undertake a number of actions in response to a declared national emergency, but none of these actions explicitly include the power to impose tariffs, duties, or the like, or the power to tax.” The case now appears to be headed to the Supreme Court for a final decision. According to Bloomberg Economics, the average US tariff will rise to 15.2% if rates are implemented as announced, up from 13.3% earlier, and significantly higher than the 2.3% in 2024 before the tariffs were announced.
Overseas stock markets settled mixed on Tuesday. The Euro Stoxx 50 rose to a 1-week high and closed up +0.11%. China’s Shanghai Composite closed down -0.51%. Japan’s Nikkei Stock 225 dropped from a record high and closed down -0.42%.
Interest Rates
December 10-year T-notes (ZNZ5) on Tuesday closed down by -6.5 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield rose by +3.0 bp to 4.070%. Strength in stocks on Tuesday curbed safe-haven demand for T-notes. Also, supply pressures are weighing on T-notes as the Treasury will auction $119 billion of T-notes and T-bonds this week.
T-notes recovered some of their losses on solid demand for the Treasury’s $58 billion auction of 3-year T-notes that had a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.73, above the 10-auction average of 2.59. T-notes also have support after Tuesday’s larger-than-expected downward revision to annual US payroll growth and last Friday’s weak US unemployment report boosted the chances to 100% for a 25 bp Fed rate cut at next week’s FOMC meeting.
Concerns about Fed independence are negatively impacting T-note prices due to President Trump’s attempt to fire Fed Governor Cook and Stephen Miran’s intention to hold a Fed Governor position while remaining technically in his White House role on the Council of Economic Advisors.
European government bond yields on Tuesday moved higher. The 10-year German bund yield rose +1.7 bp to 2.659%. The 10-year UK gilt yield rose +1.8 bp to 4.623%.
French Jul manufacturing production fell -1.7% m/m, weaker than expectations of -1.2% m/m and the largest decline in 14 months.
Swaps are discounting no chance for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at Thursday’s policy meeting.
US Stock Movers
UnitedHealth Group (UNH) closed up more than +8% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrials and underpin health insurance stocks after saying it expects 78% of its Medicare Advantage members to be in highly rated 4-star or higher plans that earn bonus payments next year. Also, Centene (CNC) closed up more than +7% and Molina Healthcare (MOH) closed up more than +3%. In addition, Elevance Health (ELV) closed up more than +2% and CVS Health (CVS) closed up more than +1%
Strength in chip makers also supported gains in the broader market. Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Micron Technology (MU) closed up more than +2%. Also, Nvidia (NVDA), Marvell Technology (MRVL), ARM Holdings Plc (ARM), and ASML Holding NV (ASML) closed up more than +1%. In addition, KLA Corp (KLAC) closed up +0.96% and Applied Materials (AMAT) closed up +0.89%.
Tourmaline Bio (TRML) closed up more than +57% after Novartis AG agreed to buy the company for $1.4 billion or about $48 a share.
Nebius Group NV (NBIS) closed up more than +49% after announcing it will provide Microsoft access to GPU infrastructure capacity at its new data center in Vineland, New Jersey, over the next five years.
Brighthouse Financial (BHF) closed up more than +12% after the Financial Times reported that Aquarian Holdings is in late-stage talks with two Middle Eastern investors to finance a takeover of the company.
Atlassian Corp (TEAM) closed up more than +5% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100 after announcing it is ending its data center product over the coming three years and will move customers to its cloud platform.
CoreWeave (CRWV) closed up more than +7% after launching CoreWeave Ventures, a new initiative committed to backing founders and companies developing platforms and technologies shaping the AI ecosystem.
Humana (HUM) closed down more than -12% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after a post on LinkedIn, cited by analysts at Leerink Partners, stated that changes in the thresholds for Medicare quality ratings that pay bonuses to health plans are harder to get, and Humana receives most of its revenue from selling private Medicare Advantage plans.
Albemarle (ALB) closed down more than -11% as lithium stocks retreated on a report from Chinese state media Securities Times that said CATL’s lithium mine, which had suspended production last month, will resume production soon.
SailPoint (SAIL) closed down more than -7% after forecasting Q3 adjusted income from operations of $42.5 million-$43.5 million, weaker than the consensus of $50.4 million.
Fox Corp (FOXA) closed down more than -6% after trusts established for three of Rupert Murdoch’s children are selling 16.9 million shares of Class B stock.
Home builders and home building suppliers are falling today on long liquidation and profit taking following the sharp rally in the stocks over the past three months. Builders FirstSource (BLDR) closed down more than -5%. Also, PulteGroup (PHM), DR Horton (DHI), and Lennar (LEN) closed down more than -3%, and Toll Brothers (TOL) closed down more than -2%.
Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) closed down more than -5% after announcing that mining operations at the Central Papua, Indonesia Grasberg minerals district had been suspended to evacuate workers from an underground mine.
News Corp (NWS) closed down more than -4% after announcing it will offer 14.1 million shares of Class B common stock.
