It operates in three segments: Personal Lines, Commercial Lines, and Property. The Personal Lines segment writes insurance for personal autos and recreational vehicles (RV). This segment's products include personal auto insurance; and special lines products, including insurance for motorcycles, ATVs, RVs, watercrafts, snowmobiles, and related products. The Commercial Lines segment provides auto-related liability and physical damage insurance, and business-related general liability and property insurance for autos, vans, and pick-up trucks used by small businesses, as well as non-fleet taxis, black-car services, and airport taxis; tractors, trailers, and straight trucks primarily used by regional general freight and expeditor-type businesses, and long-haul operators; dump trucks used by light contractors and heavy constructions; log trucks and garbage trucks used by dirt, sand and gravel, logging, garbage/debris removal, and coal-type businesses; and tow trucks and wreckers used in towing services and gas/service station businesses. The Property segment writes residential property insurance for homeowners, other property owners, and renters, as well as offers manufactured homes, personal umbrella insurance, and primary and excess flood insurance. The company offers policy issuance and claims adjusting services; acts as an agent to homeowners, general liability, workers' compensation insurance, and other products; and reinsurance services. It sells its products through independent insurance agencies, as well as through mobile applications and over the phone. The Progressive Corporation was founded in 1937 and is headquartered in Mayfield Village, Ohio.

Our estimate was $2.2 billion.
Underwriting income was $482 million, up 223.5% year over year. The combined ratio improved 1620 bps year over year to 76.1. The Zacks Consensus Estimate was pegged at 81.57.
Mortgage: Gross premiums written dipped 2.7% year over year to $330 million. Net premiums written decreased 2.8% year over year to $274 million and reflected lower U.S. monthly and single premium volume. Our estimate was $271.3 million.
Underwriting income decreased 3.3% year over year to $260 million. The combined ratio deteriorated 130 bps to 13.5. The Zacks Consensus Estimate was pegged at 23.22.
Financial Update
Arch Capital exited the quarter with cash of $1.1 billion, which increased 8.6% from 2024-end. Debt was $2.7 billion as of Sept. 30, 2025, which remained unchanged from the end of 2024.
As of Sept. 30, 2025, the book value per share was $62.32, up 17.3% from the 2024-end level.
Annualized operating return on average common equity expanded 70 bps year over year to 18.5%. Cash from operations of $2.2 billion increased 8.3% year over year.

The top-line figure beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 0.7%.
Net written premiums increased 1% year over year to a record $11.47 billion. The underwriting gain doubled year over year to $1.4 billion. The consolidated underlying combined ratio of 83.9 improved 170 bps year over year. The combined ratio improved 590 bps year over year to 87.3 due to lower catastrophe losses and an improvement in the underlying combined ratio, partially offset by lower net favorable prior year reserve development.

Cincinnati Financial Corporation CINF reported third-quarter 2025 operating income of $2.85 per share, which surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 41.8%. The bottom line increased 100.7% year over year.
The quarterly results of CINF were aided by premium growth initiatives, price increases and higher interest income from fixed-maturity securities.

Total operating revenues in the quarter under review were $2.9 billion, which improved 12.1% year over year. This improvement was driven by higher earned premiums, investment income and other revenues. The top line beat the consensus mark by 0.8%.

Underwriting income was $111 million, which jumped nearly 37% year over year. The combined ratio improved 190 bps year over year to 91.9. Our estimate was pegged at 92.7.
Personal Lines Insurance: Total revenues of $839 million increased 23% year over year on account of a 24% rise in premiums earned. Our estimate was $900.9 million, while the Zacks Consensus Estimate was pegged at $852.6 million.
The company reported an underwriting profit of $99 million against an underwriting loss of $22 million incurred in the year-earlier period. The combined ratio improved 2210 bps year over year to 88.2.
Excess and Surplus Lines Insurance: Total revenues of $157 million grew 11% year over year, aided by 11% higher earned premiums. Our estimate was $168.7 million, while the Zacks Consensus Estimate was pegged at $178.8 million.
Underwriting profit jumped 138% year over year to $19 million. Our estimate was pinned at $14.2 million. The combined ratio improved 550 bps year over year to 98.8. Our estimate was 92.1.
Life Insurance: Total revenues were $135 million, up 5% year over year. The Zacks Consensus Estimate was pegged at $95.1 million. Our estimate was $83.5 million.
Total benefits and expenses decreased 4% year over year to $99 million due to lower contract holders’ benefits incurred and lower underwriting expenses incurred.

North America Agricultural Insurance: Net premiums written increased 5.6% from the year-ago quarter to $1.4 billion, primarily due to an increase in exposure in the company’s crop insurance business, which more than offset year-over-year declines in commodity prices. The figure matched our estimate. The combined ratio improved 240 bps to 88%. Our estimate was 96.4%.
Overseas General Insurance: Net premiums written jumped 9.7% year over year to $3.6 billion. The figure matched both the Zacks Consensus Estimate and our estimate. The combined ratio improved 270 bps to 83.3%. Our estimate was 88.4.
Global Reinsurance: Net premiums written declined 13.5% year over year to $304 million. Our estimate was $408.4 million. The combined ratio improved 1,700 bps to 77.4%. Our estimate was 127.9.
Life Insurance: Net premiums written increased 24.6% year over year to $1.93 billion, with growth of 26.5% in International Life. Our estimate was $1.8 billion.
The Life Insurance segment income was $324 million, up 13.9% in constant dollars. The Zacks Consensus Estimate was pegged at $278 million.

The cash balance of $2.4 billion, as of Sept. 30, 2025, decreased 3.7% from the 2024-end level. Total shareholders’ equity grew 13.7% from the level at 2024-end to $77.8 billion as of Sept. 30, 2025. Book value per share, as of Sept. 30, 2024, was $182.22, up 14% from the figure as of Dec. 31, 2024.

RLI's Q3 Earnings, Revenues Beat Estimates on Solid Underwriting

W.R. Berkley Corporation's WRB third-quarter 2025 operating income of $1.10 per share beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.03 per share by 2.8%. The bottom line increased 18.3% year over year.
The insurer benefited from continued strength in both underwriting and investment income.

W.R. Berkley’s net premiums written were $3.4 billion, up 5.5% year over year. Our estimate was $3.3 billion.
Net investment income grew 8.5% to $351.2 million, reflecting higher yields on an expanding fixed-maturity portfolio. The strength of operating cash flow continued to drive growth in net investable assets. Its current new money rates remained comfortably above average book yield, positioning WRB well for further investment income growth. Our estimate for investment income was $352.4 million. The Zacks Consensus Estimate was pegged at $364.9 million.
Operating revenues came in at $3.6 billion, up 8.2% year over year, on the back of higher net premiums earned, improved net investment income and higher insurance service fees. The top line beat the consensus estimate by 0.4%.

Total expenses increased 6.6% to $3.1 billion due to higher losses and loss expenses, operating costs, interest expense and expenses from non-insurance businesses. Our estimate was $3.1 billion.
The loss ratio deteriorated 80 basis points (bps) to 63.9, while the expense ratio remained flat year over year at 28.4.
Catastrophe losses of $78.5 million in the quarter were narrower than $97.8 million incurred in the year-ago quarter. The consolidated combined ratio (a measure of underwriting profitability) remained flat year over year at 90.9. The Zacks Consensus Estimate was pegged at 89.6.
Segment Details
Net premiums written at the Insurance segment increased 5.1% year over year to $2.8 billion in the quarter, primarily due to higher premiums from other liability, short-tail lines, auto, workers' compensation and professional liability. Our estimate was $2.9 billion.
The combined ratio deteriorated 80 bps to 92.3. The Zacks Consensus Estimate was 88.9. Our estimate was 90.8.
Net premiums written in the Reinsurance & Monoline Excess segment increased 8.6% year over year to $417.1 million on higher premiums at Casualty, Property and Monoline excess. Our estimate was $425 million. The combined ratio improved 560 bps to 87. The Zacks Consensus Estimate was pegged at 89.3, whereas our estimate was 92.3.
Financial Update
W.R. Berkley exited the third quarter of 2025 with total assets worth $43.7 billion, up 8.1% from year-end 2024. Senior notes and other debt moved down 0.1% from 2024 end levels to $1.8 billion. Book value per share increased 16.7% from 2024 end level to $25.79 as of Sept, 30, 2025.
Cash flow from operations was $1.1 billion in the third quarter of 2025, down 8.1% year over year. Operating return on equity contracted 10 bps to 21%.
WRB bought back shares worth $24.6 million in the reported quarter.

Performance of Other Insurers
The Progressive Corporation’s PGR third-quarter 2025 earnings per share of $4.05 missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 20.3%. Operating revenues of $22.2 billion missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 0.6%. However, the bottom line increased 13.1% year over year while the top line increased 12.7%.
Net premiums written were $21.3 billion in the quarter, up 10% from $19.5 billion a year ago. Net premiums earned grew 14% to $20.8 billion. The reported figure missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $21.1 billion.
The Travelers Companies TRV reported third-quarter 2025 core income of $8.14 per share, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 35.4%. The bottom line increased 55% year over year. Travelers’ total revenues increased 5% from the year-ago quarter to $12.44 billion, primarily driven by higher premiums, net investment income, fee income, and other revenues. The top-line figure beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 0.7%.
Net written premiums increased 1% year over year to a record $11.47 billion. The underwriting gain doubled year over year to $1.4 billion. The consolidated underlying combined ratio of 83.9 improved 170 bps year over year. The combined ratio improved 590 bps year over year to 87.3 due to lower catastrophe losses and an improvement in the underlying combined ratio, partially offset by lower net favorable prior year reserve development.
RLI Corp. RLI reported third-quarter 2025 operating earnings of 83 cents per share, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 33.9%. The bottom line increased 27.7% from the prior-year quarter. Operating revenues in the reported quarter were $449 million, up 5.3% year over year, driven by 4.7% higher net premiums earned and 12.5% higher net investment income. The top line beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 0.5%.
Underwriting income of $60.5 million increased 48.6% year over year. The combined ratio improved 450 basis points (bps) year over year to 85.1. Our estimate was 97.8.
