The company transports agriculture, forest, and consumer products comprising soybeans, wheat, corn, fertilizers, livestock and poultry feed, food products, food oils, flour, sweeteners, ethanol, lumber and wood products, pulp board and paper products, wood fibers, wood pulp, beverages, and canned goods; chemicals consist of sulfur and related chemicals, petroleum products comprising crude oil, chlorine and bleaching compounds, plastics, rubber, industrial chemicals, chemical wastes, sand, and natural gas liquids; metals and construction materials, such as steel, aluminum products, machinery, scrap metals, cement, aggregates, minerals, clay, transportation equipment, and military-related products; and automotive, including finished motor vehicles and automotive parts, as well as coal. It also transports overseas freight through various Atlantic and Gulf Coast ports; and operates an intermodal network. As of December 31, 2023, the company operated approximately 19,100 route miles in 22 states and the District of Columbia. Norfolk Southern Corporation was incorporated in 1980 and is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia.

Barr succeeds John Orr who will retire from the company on July 1.
Brian Barr has more than 28 years of experience including more than a decade leading transportation teams in the east, to oversee Norfolk Southern's railway operations, and has been leading the mechanical department for two years.
In pre-market activity, NSC shares were trading at $302.83, down 0.70% on the New York Stock Exchange.

Norfolk Southern Promotes Brian Barr To COO As John Orr Retires

(RTTNews) - The U.S. Surface Transportation Board on Thursday said it has paused the merger review process, including the environmental review, for the proposed Union Pacific Corp. (UNP) and Norfolk Southern Corp. merger while accepting the companies' revised application for consideration.
The regulator has ordered the railroads to provide additional information by July 27, 2026.
"The Board finds that there are several aspects of the revised application that are unclear or underdeveloped and require supplementation at this stage of the proceeding so that the Board may have the information necessary to thoroughly evaluate—and the public has an adequate opportunity to comment on—whether the transaction is in the public interest," STB said in a release.
The Board requested additional information on several issues, including competitive impacts, access for shippers, public benefits, service assurance plans, market share projections, downstream merger effects, passenger rail operations and car supply issues.
The Board also denied a request by the applicants to waive restrictions on ex parte communications, saying such a waiver at this stage could complicate the record-building process.
In addition, the Board confirmed that an Environmental Impact Statement will be prepared for the proposed merger in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act. The agency said it plans to hold at least 12 in-person public meetings and several virtual meetings as part of the environmental review process.

In trading on Thursday, cigarettes & tobacco shares were relative laggards, down on the day by about 2.5%. Helping drag down the group were shares of Ispire Technology, off about 6.2% and shares of Universal off about 5.5% on the day.
Also lagging the market Thursday are railroads shares, down on the day by about 1.5% as a group, led down by Norfolk Southern, trading lower by about 4.8% and Union Pacific, trading lower by about 4%.

In early trading on Thursday, shares of Dollar Tree topped the list of the day's best performing components of the S&P 500 index, trading up 15.9%. Year to date, Dollar Tree has lost about 9.7% of its value.
And the worst performing S&P 500 component thus far on the day is Norfolk Southern, trading down 5.0%. Norfolk Southern is showing a gain of 7.2% looking at the year to date performance.
Two other components making moves today are Synopsys, trading down 4.7%, and Agilent Technologies, trading up 15.2% on the day.

Let's take a closer look at two promising transportation stocks that are worth buying this year: Joby Aviation (NYSE: JOBY) and Canadian National Railway (NYSE: CNI). The former is a good fit for speculative investors, while the latter is a dependable blue chip play.
The speculative play: Joby Aviation
Joby Aviation develops electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Its S4 eVTOL can carry one pilot and four passengers, travel up to 150 miles on a single charge, and reach a maximum speed of 200 miles per hour. Unlike many of its competitors, which use separate propellers for takeoff and cruising, the S4 uses a single propeller for both modes -- reducing its weight and enabling it to travel faster and farther.
Joby is still awaiting the FAA's approval to launch its first commercial flights, but it's already backed by major companies such as Toyota, Delta Air Lines, and Uber. Toyota provides Joby with the engineering and manufacturing support to scale its business. Delta will bundle Joby's short-range flights into its premium tickets for "home to airport" services, and Uber will integrate those flights into its new Uber Air platform. It's also producing autonomous eVTOLs for the Department of Defense.
Once Joby's first commercial flights take off, analysts expect its revenue to soar from $53 million in 2025 to $458 million in 2028. According to Fortune Business Insights, the global eVTOL market could grow at a 36.8% CAGR from 2026 to 2034 as those electric aircraft replace conventional helicopters for short-range flights.
Joby is still unprofitable, and its stock isn't cheap at 25 times its 2028 sales. But if it successfully ramps up its production over the next few years, it could become one of the market's hottest next-gen transportation stocks.
The conservative play: Canadian National Railway
Canadian National Railway operates approximately 20,000 miles of railroad across the U.S. and Canada, and connects the Pacific, Atlantic, and Gulf of Mexico coasts. That T-shaped network supports seamless cross-border shipping without transfers to other carriers. It's diversified across a wide range of sectors -- including bulk commodities, shipping containers, industrial and energy products, and automotive products -- so it isn't dependent on a single industry.
That scale and diversification make it one of the market's most reliable transportation stocks. From 2025 to 2028, analysts expect its EPS to grow at an 8% CAGR. It still looks reasonably valued at 21 times this year's earnings, and it pays a forward dividend yield of 2.3%.
Canadian National Railway faces three near-term challenges: the unresolved tariff negotiations between the U.S. and Canada, which could impact cross-border trade; higher oil prices and catch-up costs from a previous labor dispute, which are driving up its operating costs; and the proposed merger between Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern, which would create a major competitor and America's first true transcontinental railroad.
Nevertheless, Canada's ongoing exports of oil products, grain, and fertilizer should offset a lot of that near-term pressure. Its recent completion of a major investment cycle (to expand its Chicago EJ&E bypass) should also reduce some of the pressure on its margins and earnings. So if you're looking for a conservative, dividend-paying logistics play that will bounce back from the next market crash, Canadian National Railway checks all the right boxes.

Coal market weakness is another headwind for NSC. The coal business remains subject to secular pressures from greener alternatives, which is leading to the planned retirement of coal units. The weak coal market has resulted in below-par coal revenues. Coal revenues fell 8% year over year to $1.48 billion in 2025. Coal revenues per unit declined 9% year over year in 2025. During first-quarter 2026, coal revenues fell 2% year over year, while coal revenues per unit declined 9% year over year.

(RTTNews) - Union Pacific (UNP) and Norfolk Southern (NSC) submitted an amended merger application to the Surface Transportation Board seeking approval to create America's first transcontinental railroad. The deeper analysis confirmed the merger will make rail significantly more competitive with long-haul trucking, taking approximately 2.1 million trucks off the road. Shifting freight from higher-cost trucks to low-cost rail will save shippers an estimated $3.5 billion annually.
Also, the amended application confirms the merger will preserve customer access to competitive railroad alternatives. The amended application increases the anticipated number of new premium intermodal lanes operating seven days a week from six to seven, with a new lane connecting Northern California and the Southeast.
The amended application estimates the combined company will need 1,200 net new union jobs by the third year of the merger to handle new business, up from 900 in the original application.

Dimensional US Large Cap Value ETF Experiences Big Outflow

Norfolk Southern Corporation NSC posted earnings (excluding 22 cents from non-recurring items) of $2.65 per share for the first quarter of 2026, topping the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.51. The adjusted figure was down 1.5% from $2.69 a year ago.
Railway operating revenues were $3.0 billion, edging past the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.99 billion and rising 0.2% year over year. The adjusted operating ratio (operating expenses as a % of revenues) in the quarter landed at 68.7%, as higher costs and fuel headwinds weighed on profitability. The year-ago value of the metric was 67.9%. A lower value of the metric is preferable.

NSC Navigates Volatile Volumes and Weather Disruptions
First-quarter performance reflected a mixed demand and operating backdrop. Management pointed to volatile volumes, severe winter weather and a sharp rise in fuel prices in March, but noted that service execution improved as conditions normalized late in the quarter.
The volume decline was modest at 1% year over year, suggesting a relatively steady demand base even amid macro uncertainty. As conditions improved, the railroad said it captured momentum exiting the quarter, underscoring the strength of the operating foundation. In the market outlook, the company also flagged that the competitive environment following its merger announcement is expected to pressure volumes in the short to medium term.
Norfolk Southern Mix Shows Resilience Across Segments
Merchandise remained the largest contributor, with revenues rising 1% year over year to $1.88 billion on a 1% increase in units. Revenue per unit for the franchise was essentially flat year over year, indicating stable pricing and mix despite a choppy backdrop.
Intermodal revenues dipped 1% to $749 million as units declined 4%, though revenue per unit improved 3%. Coal revenues slipped 2% to $364 million, even as volumes increased 9%, as revenue per unit fell 9%, reflecting weaker realization.
NSC Profitability Reflects Merger and Incident Impacts
On a GAAP basis, earnings were $2.43 per share compared with $3.31 in the year-ago period, while income from railway operations fell 23% to $877 million. Operating expenses rose 15% to $2.12 billion, caused in part by $52 million of merger-related expenses and $10 million of net expenses tied to the Eastern Ohio incident.
Excluding merger-related costs and the incident impacts, adjusted income from railway operations was $939 million, down 2% year over year. The adjusted expense base was $2.06 billion, up 1%, as productivity gains partially offset inflation and higher fuel costs.
Norfolk Southern Cash Use Tilts Toward Investment and Dividends
NSC, currently carrying a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), ended the quarter with cash and cash equivalents of $1.34 billion, down from $1.53 billion at the end of fiscal 2025. Long-term debt was $16.49 billion at March 31, 2026, and total debt stood at $17.10 billion, keeping leverage broadly steady. Operating cash flow was $344 million in the first three months of 2026 compared with $950 million a year ago, reflecting working-capital movement and lower earnings. Norfolk Southern invested $382 million in property additions and returned $303 million to shareholders through dividends, while it did not repurchase shares during the quarter.
NSC Reiterates 2026 Expense and Capex Guardrails
Looking ahead, management reiterated its 2026 framework centered on safety, consistent service and disciplined execution. Adjusted operating expense is still expected in a range of $8.2 billion to $8.4 billion, with the company noting that prolonged elevated fuel prices could influence the outlook.
Capital spending is projected at $1.9 billion for 2026, representing a planned reduction of about $300 million, or 14%, from 2025 levels. The company also highlighted a new partnership with Jaguar Transport Holdings, as part of its freight growth focus, emphasizing deal structures and capabilities aimed at creating added customer value.
Q1 Performances of Other Transportation Companies
CSX Corporation’s CSX first-quarter 2026 earnings per share of 43 cents surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 39 cents and increased 26% on a year-over-year basis. Results were aided by revenue growth and a reduction in operating expenses.
Total revenues of $3.48 billion missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $3.51 billion. The top line increased 2% year over year on the back of higher merchandise pricing, intermodal volume growth, higher domestic coal revenues and increased fuel surcharge revenues. These were partially offset by a decrease in export coal revenues, including the impact of lower benchmark rates.

Operating revenues totaled $3.06 billion, rising 4.6% year over year. Revenues beat the consensus mark of $2.94 billion, resulting in a 3.9% surprise, as demand proved resilient across several service offerings, led by Intermodal volume growth and higher revenue per load in select highway-related businesses.
