In addition, it provides repair, maintenance, and bodywork services through its NIO service centers and authorized third-party service centers; statutory and third-party liability insurance, and vehicle damage insurance through third-party insurers; repair and routine maintenance; courtesy vehicle services; roadside assistance; data packages; and auto financing and financial leasing services. Further, the company involved in the provision of energy and service packages to its users; design and technology development activities; manufacture of e-powertrains, battery packs, and components; and sales and after sales management activities. Additionally, it offers NIO Certified, a used vehicle inspection, evaluation, acquisition, and sales service. The company was formerly known as NextEV Inc. and changed its name to NIO Inc. in July 2017. NIO Inc. was incorporated in 2014 and is headquartered in Shanghai, China.

Tuesday’s trading featured stronger fourth-quarter sales projections and China’s extended EV trade-in subsidies. Nio IPO'd in 2018 and has fallen 16% since going public.
How the markets moved today
The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) slipped 0.14% to 6,896, while the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) fell 0.24% to 23,419. Auto manufacturers peers were mixed as investors compared Nio’s stronger Q4 outlook with ongoing competition in premium EVs. Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) fell by 1.13% and Li Auto (NASDAQ:LI) gained 0.64%.
What this means for investors
Nio extended its upward streak today as investors reacted to positive sales projections and a Chinese government policy change. Chinese officials announced an extension to trade-in subsidies for electric vehicles. According to Sherwood News, the shift in policy will give consumers up to $2,850 towards a qualifying new vehicle, boosting demand.
Meanwhile, CEO William Li told Chinese media that the company's Q4 vehicle sales will come in above 30 billion yuan (around $4.3 billion). This reassured the market after Nio's Q3 revenue disappointed. The upbeat sales figures come against a backdrop of chip shortages, which are impacting delivery of its new ES8 SUV orders.

Trading volume reached 68.1 million shares, nearly 28% above its three-month average of 53.4 million shares.
How the markets moved today
Monday’s action followed premarket focus on Nio's deeper battery reliance on Contemporary Amperex Technology (OTC:CYAT.Y) and a bullish CEO sales outlook. The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) slipped 0.33% to 6,907, while the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) fell 0.50% to 23,474. Within the automotive industry, shares of sector rivals Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) and Li Auto (NASDAQ:LI) dropped 3.27% and 1.61%, respectively.
What this means for investors
Nio has expanded its offerings by introducing two new brands, launching the mass-market brand Onvo and a new premium compact brand, Firefly, last year.
This strategy to expand market reach has so far been successful. October marked the first time the company delivered over 40,000 vehicles in a single month. This was followed by Nio's second-largest shipment month ever in November.
Today's move came after Nio CEO William Li offered an upbeat Q4 forecast. The midpoint of Li's vehicle delivery guidance implies another new record of over 45,000 units is coming for December. Li also predicted very strong total fourth-quarter sales, indicating discounts aren't what's driving sales.
Nio stock also got a boost today from reports saying the company is relying more on CATL for batteries and has suspended supply cooperation with competitor BYD for the Onvo L60.

Rivian Automotive RIVN has updated its software for its customers to elevate the overall driving experience. It will expand Rivian’s assisted driving capabilities and deliver on top customer requests. The latest software update 2025.46 includes some of the new features announced on its AI and Autonomy event held on Dec. 11, 2025.
The company announced “Universal Hands-Free,” which expands hands-free assisted driving coverage from 135,000 miles to more than 3.5 million miles of roads across the United States and Canada. The feature allows drivers to operate hands-free on any road with clearly marked lanes. However, it does not function at slow speeds or at traffic lights and stop signs, as it is not yet a fully autonomous system.
Rivian’s autonomy feature includes three driving styles — “Mild,” “Medium” and “Spicy” — that shape how the vehicle behaves on the road.
Mild mode provides a relaxed style with a more gap distance and more gradual lane changes.
Medium mode delivers a balanced style to manage cut-ins and accelerate with traffic flow.
Spicy mode offers a more dynamic style with a tighter gap distance and quicker steering during lane changes.
The company announced another significant software, named “Digital Key”, which will let users add their Gen 2 car key to their digital wallet on iPhone, Apple Watch, Google Pixel and Samsung devices. The key leverages technology from the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC), ensuring the vehicle supports the latest digital standards and allowing the feature to be extended to future models like the R2 and R3.
Driver Display View is another feature introduced for both Gen 1 and Gen 2 drivers. Gen 2 drivers can now switch between the Autonomy view, which displays surrounding lanes and vehicles, and the Maps and Navigation view on the driver display. Gen 1 drivers, meanwhile, can toggle between the Driver Assistance view, which shows vehicles and objects ahead, and the Maps and Navigation view. Drivers can also switch between screens by pressing the right thumbwheel on the steering wheel — for example, changing music on one display while following navigation instructions on another.
Kick Turn and RAD Tuner features are rolling out exclusively to Gen 2 Quad-Motor vehicles. The kick turn feature will let the user steer in tight-road conditions while moving at speeds under 15mph or 24km/h.
Overall, Rivian’s growing software stack highlights a path toward higher-margin differentiation, helping the company compete not just on vehicles, but also on long-term ownership experience.
Competitive Context
General Motors GM takes pride in its autonomous strategy and the development of its next-generation software-defined vehicle platform, OnStar and Super Cruise. The company believes the platform will be transformational and will enable the software layer of each vehicle to evolve independently of the hardware-defined physical layer. The vehicles will become smarter, more capable, and more personalized over time, which will be beneficial for the customers. The platform, on the other hand, will be more stable and last longer.
NIO Inc. NIO is rolling out upgrades to its NIO World Model (“NWM”) platform, enhancing urban and highway NOP Plus, parking, and smart safety features through over-the-air updates. These software improvements are tied to paid driver-assistance packages, allowing NIO to improve vehicle capabilities while building recurring revenue streams. The company’s in-house NX9031 smart driving chip will improve performance and optimize costs, and help scale its software-led strategy.

How RIVN Is Pushing Software Boundaries Heading Into 2026

The share price of Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker Nio (NYSE: NIO) has fallen to $4.95, more than 35% off its 2025 high and less than $2 away from its all-time lows.
Given how quickly the automaker has been growing its sales, it might seem like a no-brainer buy at the current stock price. But there are three big risks ahead for Nio. Investors should consider them carefully before buying the stock, even at this discounted price.

Risk No. 1: Profitability remains elusive for Nio
Nio's revenue has been soaring as its sales have grown by impressive double-digit percentages. In November, the company made 36,275 vehicle deliveries, a year-over-year increase of 76.3%. That's not far off from its record-setting October deliveries of 40,397 vehicles, a 92.6% year-over-year increase.
Despite these record delivery numbers and impressive year-over-year growth, Nio isn't profitable. In fact, the more vehicles it sells, the worse its profitability numbers seem to get. After posting a net loss of $813.6 million in 2021, its net losses grew to $1.6 billion in 2022, $2.2 billion in 2023, and $3 billion in 2024, all while its revenue soared from $5.6 billion to $9.1 billion.
However, the company might be turning things around. Its quarterly net losses shrank sequentially over the last three periods, and management reportedly aims to make the fourth quarter the first-ever profitable quarter. If it succeeds, shares will likely rise; if not, they are likely to fall further.
Even if Nio manages to eke out a single profitable quarter, competition in the Chinese EV market is continuing to heat up, so maintaining that profitability may get even more difficult as time goes on.
Risk No. 2: Vanishing incentives
The Chinese government pulled out all the stops to help jump-start the country's electric car industry, offering substantial purchase subsidies for EVs through 2022 and currently offering full tax exemptions for purchasing a vehicle. However, those exemptions are gradually being phased out, starting next month.
Instead of offering a tax exemption on the full purchase price of an EV up to RMB 30,000 (about $4,260), the government will only offer a 50% exemption worth up to about $2,130 in 2026 and 2027. After that, the exemptions are set to expire.
Here in the U.S., we saw the impact that the removal of tax incentives could have on EV sales when the $7,500 tax credits were phased out at the end of September, and EV sales plummeted in October and November. The same thing could easily happen to Nio's sales in 2026, which could have a big impact on its revenue and its share price.
That said, Nio has deliberately targeted the lower-end EV market by offering several less-expensive vehicles and its signature battery swap program, which reduces the purchase price of a vehicle even further. Thus, the reduced tax incentives are likely to go further when buying a Nio, which might improve its competitive standing relative to other Chinese automakers. But there's no guarantee that even an improved competitive standing will be enough to offset a likely drop in overall purchases.
Risk No. 3: Trade barriers
Part of the growth thesis for Nio is its aggressive international expansion efforts. While the vast majority of its cars are sold in China, it has already launched sales and service networks in five European countries and is planning to expand into seven more.
However, in late 2024, the E.U. implemented stiff tariffs on Chinese EVs, calling them "unfairly subsidized." These tariffs, which range from 17% to 35.3%, are a huge barrier for all Chinese EV makers that sell in Europe, but are especially problematic for a carmaker like Nio, which leans heavily on affordability. The tariffs aren't set to expire for five years, which throws the EV maker's European strategy into doubt.
Is Nio stock worth a look?
Given how risky Nio looks right now, it's no wonder it's trading at less than $5, which translates to just 1.1 times trailing sales.
While it's possible that Nio will manage to turn in a profitable fourth quarter and then navigate the competitive landscape and the vanishing tax incentives in the Chinese EV market to maintain that profitability, there's a lot that could go wrong. Investors should be aware of the risks and should only put money they can afford to lose into this speculative stock.
