Further, the company involved in the provision of energy and service packages to its users; design and technology development activities; manufacture of e-powertrains, battery packs, and components; and sales and after sales management activities. Additionally, it offers NIO Certified, a used vehicle inspection, evaluation, acquisition, and sales service. Here's a closer look at three growth stocks you could buy and hold for decades as a means of supercharging your portfolio's growth. While each of these tickers brings some added risk and volatility to the table that will require regular monitoring, their long-term upside potential is arguably worth the work.
Recursion Pharmaceuticals
While artificial intelligence (AI) still has of room for improvement, the writing is on the wall -- the technology will be tackling complex problems that individuals and institutions just can't. This includes designing and testing pharmaceuticals.
Well, the future is here. Recursion Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: RXRX) has built an AI-powered platform capable of virtually testing a drug rather than requiring a full-blown clinical trial of an idea. Leveraging 36 petabytes (36 million gigabytes) of digital biological and chemical data, its so-called Recursion OS can accomplish what would normally take years and millions of dollars in a matter of days at a fraction of the cost.
And it's no mere theory. The technology is not only functioning -- it's commercialized. A handful of pharma companies including Roche and Sanofi are using Recursion OS to tackle some of their own developmental work, while Recursion is working on some drugs of its own. All of these drug candidates will still need to go through the actual clinical trial process to satisfy regulatory agencies like the FDA. Recursion's software facilitates focus though, by virtue of weeding out less promising drug prospects so more resources can be devoted to more promising ones. That's huge.
It's still relatively early for Recursion, and for that matter, the AI-assisted drug-development industry itself. Recursion Pharmaceuticals remains in the red, and will likely remain there for at least a few more years. This arguably makes Recursion the riskiest of the three stocks being put under the microscope here.
Just understand the potential reward is commensurate with the risk. Recursion Pharmaceuticals is nearing a revenue and profit turning point in front of what Straits Research believes will be average annualized growth of nearly 32% for the artificial intelligence drug-development industry through 2030. This tailwind alone should be enough to push Recursion to profitability. That makes this stock's prolonged and persistent weakness since peaking in 2021 is a fantastic buying opportunity.
Shopify
Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) is in no immediate danger of being dethroned as the king of North America's e-commerce scene. But it's no longer able to simply bully the rest of the industry. Competitors are successfully pushing back... just not in the way you might have expected. Rather than one or two rival names making inroads, brands and merchants are taking matters into their own hands by setting up their own online stores as a means of working all the way around Amazon's domination.
And they've largely got Shopify (NASDAQ: SHOP) to thank for the option.
In simplest terms, Shopify helps companies establish their own in-house e-commerce presence. From websites to payment-processing to inventory-management to marketing, Shopify can do it all, making it easy for businesses of all sizes to stay focused on more important matters (like running that business). Although the company no longer discloses how many clients are using its technology, it does divulge the scope of its business. Last year, Shopify's solutions facilitated the sale of $292.3 billion worth of goods and services, up 24% year over year to extend a long-established growth streak. Shopify collected $8.9 billion worth of revenue for itself in the process, turning a little over $1 billion of it into net income.
This growth still only scratches the surface of the opportunity though. Market research outfit eMarketer reports that only a little more than one-fifth of the world's retail spending is currently done online. The rest is still taking place in brick-and-mortar stores.
While certainly some of these sales will never move online, much of it can. Brand-owned and merchant-managed online stores are positioned to capture more than their fair share of whatever growth awaits the e-commerce industry, however, as these players increasingly see the value in establishing their own direct relationships with customers. In this vein, analysts expect Shopify to produce top-line growth in the ballpark of 20% in each of the three years ahead.
Nio
Finally, add Nio (NYSE: NIO) to your list of stocks to buy and hold for decades if you want a shot at building a bigger retirement nest egg.
It wouldn't be surprising if you'd never heard of it. Although it's finding a bit of traction in Europe, the Chinese maker of electric vehicles predominantly serves China itself. It delivered 72,056 electrified cars during the second quarter of this year, up nearly 26% from the year-ago comparison, underscoring production growth that's been in place for some time now.
Think the electric vehicle (EV) market is hitting a wall due to disinterest? Not so fast. That's largely an American phenomenon. Data gathered by CleanTechnica indicates sales of electric vehicles in China soared 25% to 1.1 million units last month, accounting for more than half of the country's entire automobile sales.
That's still just the beginning though. The International Energy Agency expected EVs to account for 80% of China's total car sales by 2030, thanks to supportive policies that encourage the alternative to combustion-powered vehicles. It's making inroads in Europe as well, for the same reason. And, while there's little incentive for the company to make a push into the United States' anemic EV market right now, if and when domestic interest perks up, Nio has maintained tentative plans for that possibility.
It could be a while before Nio works its way out of the red and into the black -- it simply needs more scale. This could make the stock a little less than completely comfortable to own in the interim.
It's making clear progress on the production as well as the profitability front though, and will almost certainly get there sooner or later, and likely sooner. Given how inevitable this outcome now seems, the market's apt to reward the progress en route to fiscal viability.

Several factors converged this week to make Chinese vehicle manufacturer Nio (NYSE: NIO) a popular stock in the somewhat battered electric vehicle (EV) sector. Almost unarguably the major one was the announcement of a new vehicle, although Tesla's (NASDAQ: TSLA) latest stumbles also played a role.
It was an eventful few days for Nio, and since these developments were positive the stock rose. It ended the week more than 12% higher in price, according to data compiled by S&P Global Market Intelligence.

Now rolling out of the factory...
That new model is the ONVO L90, the rollout of which Nio incorporated into a press release touting the production of its 800,000th vehicle. The company described the ONVO L90 as a product that "redefines the family oriented three-row electric SUV."
It is to be made available for delivery starting Aug. 1 in Nio's native China, and it will retail for the equivalent of $27,000 for a battery-as-a-service version and $39,000 for a complete model.
The introduction of a new vehicle by a carmaker is always attention-grabbing, and often happy news for investors.
Timing mattered with this announcement, as it contrasted with Tesla's fairly grim second-quarter results. The American company, still the global flag-bearer for EVs, reported double-digit falls in revenue, deliveries, and profitability for the period.
A serious up-and-comer
Nio is doing a fine job leveraging its advantages, such as the Chinese government's zeal for next-generation transport solutions, and its growing presence in an economy that is still on the rise (albeit not as powerfully as it was several years ago). Investors, I believe, were right to be cheered by the company's upcoming rollout.

Freshworks
Freshworks (NASDAQ: FRSH) uses artificial intelligence (AI) on its cloud platform to provide customer relationship management and IT service management. The company counts brands including American Express, Bridgestone, and Fila as its customers.
Freshworks has not only demonstrated consistent growth in revenue over the past three years, but it also saw its gross margin increase steadily, as shown below.

As its top line improved, it also generated higher levels of free cash flow: It was $2.3 million in 2021 and leaped to $77.8 million by 2023.
Freshworks continued to display strong financial and operating metrics in the first nine months of 2024. Revenue rose 20.5% year over year to $525.8 million, while gross profit increased by almost 23% year over year to $442 million. The gross margin continued to improve from 82.5% in the previous year to 84.1% in the current period.
Free cash flow more than doubled year over year from $49.2 million to $111.6 million. Customers are also spending more -- those with over $5,000 in annual recurring revenue (ARR) increased by 14.4% year over year to 22,359 while those with more than $50,000 in ARR climbed nearly 33% year over year to 3,008.
The company recently introduced its Freddy AI Agent, a new generation of autonomous service agents that can be easily deployed at customers' workplaces. Management says these agents helped to resolve an average of 45% of customer support requests and 40% of IT service requests while delivering significant productivity and efficiency gains.
Freddy AI Agent can also increase personalization, helping to improve customer stickiness for the company's platform. During its 2023 Investor Day, management identified a total addressable market of $78 billion, a significant runway for the business.
Freshworks intends to continue leveraging AI to create new monetization opportunities, and the future looks bright as it demonstrates growth in revenue, gross margin, and free cash flow.
Confluent
Confluent (NASDAQ: CFLT) offers a data streaming platform that helps collate and consolidate organizations' real-time data from multiple sources to offer analytics and insights. The company is also enabling generative artificial intelligence (AI) that avoids hallucinations -- a response generated by AI that contains false or misleading information presented as fact -- and allows better access control.

Although free cash flow over these three years remained negative, encouraging signs point to the business, eventually generating positive free cash flow as it continues to scale up.
For the first nine months of 2024, Confluent saw revenue jump 24.6% year over year to $702.4 million. Gross profit climbed by 31% year over year to $512.5 million, with gross margin continuing to improve from 69.4% in the previous year to 73%.
The good news is that operating cash flow nearly turned positive, at negative $1.8 million, versus the prior year's operating cash outflow of $115.9 million. These numbers show that the company is well on its way to generating positive operating cash flow in due course.
Total customers also grew 16% year over year to around 5,680, and customers with ARR exceeding $1 million jumped by 19% year over year to 184. The company is growing its total customer base while also seeing customers spend more on its platform.
Management identified a total addressable market of $60 billion back in 2022. This market looks set to rise by 19% per annum to reach $100 billion by 2025, and it represents a significant opportunity for Confluent to continue growing since its annual revenue has yet to hit $1 billion.
With its annual subscription revenue soaring 66% per annum from 2018 to 2023, the company looks set to maintain this momentum since it is well positioned to benefit from the organizational shift to cloud computing.
Roku
Roku (NASDAQ: ROKU) is a provider of streaming content and helps its users find what they enjoy watching. The company also works with content publishers to monetize their audiences, and with advertisers looking to reach their target consumer segments.
Roku has steadily grown its revenue from 2021 to 2023 as seen in the table below. Gross margin has come under pressure as cost of revenue from its platform division shot up, but gross profit still managed to increase steadily over time.

The business generated fairly consistent free cash flow every year and has continued to do so this year.
For the first nine months of 2024, revenue rose 16.5% year over year to $2.9 billion while gross profit increased 19.2% year over year to $1.29 billion. There was a slight increase in gross margin from 43.4% to 44.4%, offering hope that Roku has managed to arrest the decline in this metric over the past three years.
Free cash flow came in at $136.2 million for the period, making 2022 seem like a blip as the streaming content provider is on its way to generating free cash flow for three out of the past four years.
The number of its streaming households continues to grow and was up 13% year over year to 85.5 million for the third quarter of 2024. The number of streaming hours also rose 20% year over year to 32 billion over the same period.
Roku announced that it has surpassed 90 million streaming households by the first week of 2025, which would represent at least a 12.5% year-over-year increase over the previous corresponding quarter.
The platform is seeing healthy momentum even as management launched its latest Roku Data Cloud that allows its partners to access, analyze, and use its proprietary TV data. This cloud-collaboration platform enables advertisers, agencies, and partners to obtain accurate information and curate their offerings to suit their target audience, allowing for better results.
The company has continued to add streaming services on its platform, with the latest being Crunchyroll, a global anime brand that offers access to 25,000 hours of anime with more than 2,000 titles.
These initiatives and business developments should help Roku to continue to expand its subscriber base and register more streaming hours, thereby helping the business to continue increasing its revenue and free cash flow.

Nio stock surges on ONVO L90 SUV announcement
Nio is rolling out its new ONVO L90 model for the Chinese market on Aug. 1. The vehicle will be rolled out at two price points -- a $39,000 complete model and a $27,000 battery-as-a-service model. The company's revenue increased 21.5% year over year in the first quarter, and investors are betting that the rollout of the company's new SUV will boost vehicle deliveries and allow the business to tap into high-margin service-based revenue streams.
What's next for Nio?
Despite the recent rally, Nio stock is still down roughly 76% over the last three years -- and the company is valued at just 90% of this year's expected revenue. Given that Tesla is currently trading at approximately 11 times this year's expected sales, Nio's price-to-sales ratio could look quite cheap at current levels.
For starters, Nio has yet to shift into profitability. The stock also comes with some big geopolitical risk factors connected to the increasingly adversarial relations between the U.S. and China.
