Further, the company involved in the provision of energy and service packages to its users; design and technology development activities; manufacture of e-powertrains, battery packs, and components; and sales and after sales management activities. Additionally, it offers NIO Certified, a used vehicle inspection, evaluation, acquisition, and sales service. The company was formerly known as NextEV Inc. and changed its name to NIO Inc. in July 2017. NIO Inc. was incorporated in 2014 and is headquartered in Shanghai, China.

The latest spike in fuel prices, driven by renewed tensions in the Middle East, has once again piqued investor interest. Will this moment in time finally push EV adoption into its next growth phase?
The answer is more nuanced than some headlines suggest.
The devil is in the details
For most people, the decision to purchase an electric vehicle isn't driven by fuel prices alone. Several other factors play a significant role.

First, EVs typically have higher upfront costs than comparable gasoline vehicles, even though their operating costs are lower over time.
Second, charging infrastructure remains uneven. While urban areas increasingly offer robust charging networks, rural regions and smaller cities still present challenges for EV owners.
Third, the number of models available in the United States remains relatively limited compared with traditional internal combustion vehicles.
Taken together, these factors mean that higher gasoline prices may influence consumer thinking, but they do not automatically translate into immediate EV purchases.
That said, if gas prices continue to climb and remain elevated throughout the year, we may see increased interest in EV ownership. Certainly, we saw some evidence of this following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
In Q2, 2021, EVs accounted for 2.7% of new vehicle sales in the U.S. In Q2, 2022, that number jumped to 5.6%. To be sure, the $7,500 federal tax credit was still in place then, but we also know that between February and March 2022, search traffic on CarMax for EVs more than doubled, as did EV test drives, suggesting that consumers actively started exploring EV purchases when prices rose.
Of course, it's still too early to tell how long this war will last, and more importantly, how long gas prices will stay elevated. But if the theory that EV acceptance accelerates during prolonged times of high gas prices is true, then it's worth noting some of the automakers that would likely benefit from that shift. These include primarily automakers with established EV platforms, such as U.S.-based Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA), Rivian (NASDAQ: RIVN), and Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F).
On the other side of the world, Chinese manufacturers have benefited from strong government support, large domestic demand, and control over critical battery materials. Companies such as BYD Company (OTC: BYDDY), Nio (NYSE: NIO), and XPeng (NYSE: XPEV) have expanded rapidly in recent years and are increasingly exporting vehicles to Europe and other global markets.
Perhaps more importantly, Chinese companies have developed highly integrated supply chains, particularly in battery manufacturing. That integration allows them to produce EVs at lower costs than many Western competitors.
If global EV adoption accelerates outside of the U.S. as oil prices increase, Chinese manufacturers will likely remain major beneficiaries, even if the U.S. market grows more slowly.
The whole story
Ultimately, the key question is not simply whether gasoline prices will rise. The question is whether those higher prices will persist long enough to meaningfully change consumers' car-purchasing behavior.
Short-term fuel spikes may grab headlines, but sustained trends tend to drive technological transitions. Electric vehicles are already gaining market share globally, though sales have recently slowed. Higher gasoline prices may accelerate EV sales at the margins, but they are unlikely to be the sole driver.
In the end, electrification is being propelled by a combination of factors: advances in battery technology, government policy, falling manufacturing costs, and evolving consumer preferences.
Indeed, high gas prices are part of that story. Just not the entire story.

Shares of Nio (NYSE: NIO) have soared 21.3% this week, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence. An electric vehicle (EV) maker in China, Nio produced strong delivery growth in Q4 2025 and is finally generating a profit. The stock remains down over 90% from all-time highs.

Accelerating demand
In Q4 2025, Nio's revenue growth began to accelerate. Revenue grew 76% year over year to just under $5 billion, while the company finally generated a net profit of $40 million in the period. The company's new ES8 is driving volume growth, which is a larger SUV with a higher average selling price and better margins.
Total deliveries were approximately 125,000 in Q4, up from 73,000 in the same period a year prior. Guidance calls for more growth in Q1, with expectations of 80,000 to 83,000 deliveries, which would be close to double the previous year's volume.
After years in the doldrums, Nio finally has products that are helping it scale and generate profits.
Should you buy Nio stock?
Even after this stock bump, Nio is still down significantly from its all-time highs set during the 2021 stock market EV craze. Its deliveries are growing as it targets the ginormous automotive market in China.
However, investors should be cautious when buying a stock in a foreign country that is economically more difficult to understand. The automotive sector in China remains hypercompetitive, with frequent price wars. For Nio, right now is its time to shine. But in the future, another EV competitor could start to undercut it.
For this reason, Nio stock is one to avoid, despite the company posting its first-quarter profitability. Selling cars is simply a hard business.

Trading volume reached 77.6 million shares, coming in about 75% above its three-month average of 44.4 million shares. Nio IPO'd in 2018 and has fallen 17% since going public.
How the markets moved today
The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) slipped 0.10% to 6,775, while the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) inched up 0.08% to finish at 22,716. Within EV manufacturing, industry peers Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) closed at $407.82 (up 2.15%) and Li Auto (NASDAQ:LI) finished at $18.29 (up 2.98%) as investors weighed delivery trends and pricing tactics.
What this means for investors
Nio stock pulled back today after surging more than 15% yesterday. That came after the company reported a surprise fourth-quarter profit with revenue of about $4.9 billion, up roughly 76% year over year.
That led several analysts to upgrade the stock and raise price targets based on improving margins and guidance for rising shipments. Not all analysts were bullish, though.
Barclays (NYSE:BCS) issued a note recommending investors sell after the stock jumped. Nio still has to prove it can sustain its sales and margin growth. Investors are also evaluating a billion-dollar, performance-based CEO compensation package announced yesterday. While it looks shareholder friendly, it could also turn out to drain needed funds from the balance sheet.

The stock moved higher after earnings showed Nio’s first-ever quarterly net profit and a strong beat on fiscal Q4 2025 (period ended Dec. 31, 2025) revenue and EPS. Investors will now be watching whether record deliveries can sustain improved margins.
Trading volume reached 145.1 million shares, coming in about 233% above its three-month average of 43.6 million shares. Nio IPO'd in 2018 and has fallen 14% since going public.
How the markets moved today
S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) slipped 0.22% to 6,781, while the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) was roughly flat, adding 0.01% to finish at 22,697. Additionally, Nio provided optimistic estimates for Q1 sales and vehicle deliveries. The company expects to approximately double last year’s results on both metrics.
Investors see the report as a possible inflection point for the company. The potential for sustained profitability is now visible. That bodes well for Nio’s stock price in the short- and potentially long-term.

Stock Market Today, March 10: Nio Surges After Posting First Quarterly Net Profit

Shares of Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker Nio (NYSE: NIO) shot 10.5% higher at the market open and were still up by 10.1% as of 10:45 a.m. ET. Investors liked what the company had to say in its fourth-quarter report.
Last month, the company surprised investors by saying it expected its first-ever adjusted profit from operations in the fourth quarter. The $100 million to $172 million range was particularly strong, and Nio ended up beating the high end of it.

Nio achieves first profit
It wasn't just the $178.9 million in adjusted profit from operations that had investors excited. In fact, the company achieved a slight net profit of $40.4 million in Q4. That result was fueled by increased sales volume, an optimized product mix, and lower research and development expenses.
Nio also told investors to expect revenue to double year over year in the current quarter. Vehicle deliveries should also increase by more than 90% compared to the prior year period. The strong results led Citigroup analyst Jeff Chung to note that new models are coming soon, and future expenses can continue to drop as battery costs decline. He has a price target of $6.20 on the shares, according to Barron's. That represents 25% upside from Monday's closing price.
Investors should keep an eye on executive compensation, though. The company's board of directors approved a large 2026 stock incentive plan for founder and CEO William Li. The grant of more than 248 million shares, valued at up to $1.2 billion, will depend on meeting specific performance targets related to the stock's valuation and net profits.

(RTTNews) - NIO Inc. (NIO, NIO.SI, 9866.HK) reported fourth quarter net profit attributable to ordinary shareholders of RMB 122.4 million compared with a net loss attributable to shareholders of RMB 7.13 billion in the fourth quarter of 2024. Net profit per ordinary share/ADS was RMB 0.05 compared with a loss per ordinary share/ADS of RMB 3.45. Adjusted net profit attributable to ordinary shareholders was RMB 728.1 million, compared with adjusted net loss of RMB 6.55 billion in the fourth quarter of 2024. Adjusted net profit per share/ADS was RMB 0.29 compared with adjusted net loss per share/ADS of RMB 3.17.
Total revenues in the fourth quarter were RMB 34.65 billion, an increase of 75.9% from the fourth quarter of 2024. Vehicle sales were RMB 31.61 billion, an increase of 80.9%.
For the first quarter of 2026, the company expects: deliveries of vehicles to be between 80,000 and 83,000 vehicles, and total revenues to be between RMB 24.48 billion and RMB 25.18 billion.
In pre-market trading on NYSE, NIO shares are up 7.49 percent to $5.30.
